Highly siderophile elements (HSEs), including Re and Os, are used extensively as geochemical tracers and geochronometers to investigate the formation and evolution of Earth’s crust and mantle. Mantle rocks are commonly serpentinized, but the effect of serpentinization on the distribution of HSEs is controversial because HSEs are commonly hosted by rare, micrometer- to sub-micrometer-scale grains of platinum group minerals (PGMs) of ambiguous origin that are challenging to identify, characterize, and interpret. In this study, atom probe tomography (APT) is used to characterize two spatially close PGM grains hosted by a partially serpentinized harzburgite from Macquarie Island, Australia. The APT data reveal an extraordinary level of detail that provides insights into the origin of a complex Cu–Pt alloy grain (average composition ~Cu4Pt). The grain hosts Fe-, Ni-, and Pt-rich sub-grains associated with Rh, variably overlapping networks of Pd- and Cd-enrichment, and OH-rich volumes identified as fluid inclusions. Osmium and Ru are hosted by an idioblastic laurite (RuS2) grain. Compositional, textural, and phase-diagram constraints are consistent with a modified pre-serpentinization origin for the PGMs, and a comparison between observed and calculated grain distributions indicate that while Os isotope ratios were probably unaffected by serpentinization, whole-rock and grain-scale HSE and isotopic ratios may have been decoupled during serpentinization.

Starting in the early 1950s, palaeontologists began to discover a wide range of Cretaceous terrestrial fossils in the Laiyang, Qingshan and Wangshi groups of the Jiaolai Basin, which resides in the eastern part of the Shandong Peninsula of northern China. Significant specimens from these deposits include various dinosaur eggs, footprints and fossils, including hadrosauroids, tyrannosaurids and ankylosaurids. These expanded the understanding of evolution, biodiversity and palaeoecology in East Asia. While many examples of the Jehol Biota from this area are not well constrained in terms of their stratigraphy and geochronology, previous studies have generally suggested that fossils from this region represent the second or third phase of Jehol Biota development. This paper reviews fossils, stratigraphic correlations, tectonic history and age estimates for the less well-studied outcrops of the Shandong Peninsula that host the Jehol Biota. We report three new 40 Ar/ 39 Ar ages for the Qingshang Group and discuss how these somewhat imprecise ages still constrain chronostratigraphic interpretation for the fossil-rich units.

Subduction of oceanic lithosphere is a diagnostic characteristic of plate tectonics. However, the geodynamic processes from initiation to termination of subduction zones remain enigmatic mainly due to the scarcity of appropriate rock records. We report the first discovery of early Paleozoic boninitic blueschists and associated greenschists from the eastern Proto-Tethyan North Qilian orogenic belt, northeastern Tibet, which have geochemical affinities that are typical of forearc boninites and island arc basalts, respectively. The boninitic protoliths of the blueschists record intra-oceanic subduction initiation at ca. 492–488 Ma in the eastern North Qilian arc/forearc–backarc system, whereas peak blueschist facies metamorphism reflects subsequent subduction of the arc/forearc complex to high pressure at ca. 455 Ma. These relations therefore record the life circle of an intra-oceanic subduction zone within the northeastern Proto-Tethys Ocean. The geodynamic evolution provides an early Paleozoic analogue of the early development of the Izu–Bonin–Mariana arc and its later subduction beneath the extant Japanese arc margin. This finding highlights the important role of subduction of former upper plate island arc/forearcs in reducing the likelihood of preservation of initial subduction-related rock records in ancient orogenic belts.

A large dyke of quartz tholeiitic gabbronorite has been mapped for 59 km in southern New Brunswick, Canada, between Lepreau River in the northeast and Indian Island in the southwest. Scattered outcrops occur along a positive aeromagnetic lineament, providing a dyke strike of N42°E overall (segments N30°E to N72°E), dips of 80° to 90°NNW, and widths of 4 to 30 m. A new 40Ar/39Ar plagioclase age of 201.67 ± 0.35 Ma for the Lepreau River Dyke is similar to dates for the massive North Mountain Basalt in the Fundy Basin to the east. The dyke is associated with the Ministers Island and Christmas Cove dykes, which are indistinguishable in chemistry, petrology, and probable age, and we regard them as segments of the same co-magmatic dyke system. In addition, their petrology is similar to that of the basalts of the adjacent Early Mesozoic Fundy and Grand Manan basins. We propose that the Lepreau River and associated dykes were sources for the regional basin basalts, which in turn are part of the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province (CAMP) that overlaps the Triassic–Jurassic boundary and associated mass extinction event.

In 40Ar/39Ar geochronology, excess Ar is 40Ar that does not derive from the in situ radioactive decay of 40K, or from the measurable input of atmospheric Ar, and results in increased daughter-parent ratios that correspond to anomalously old apparent dates without geological age significance. Excess 40Ar is commonly identified by a saddle-shaped 40Ar/39Ar degassing spectrum. However, biotite from the east Albany-Fraser Orogen of Western Australia contains excess 40Ar, but yields well-defined 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates, reproducible upon replicate analysis of biotite from the same sample. This “cryptic excess 40Ar” is inferred where plateau dates (1) are older than existing time constraints on cooling, such as U/Pb zircon ages for amphibolite to granulite facies metamorphism, and (2) vary between multiple samples from the same outcrop that have experienced the same thermal history. Rb/Sr geochronology is used to test the geologic significance of 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates, as the closure temperatures of both chronometers are similar, and the two chronometers are expected to yield similar cooling dates in an undisturbed system. Six Rb/Sr biotite-whole rock isochron ages from three outcrops yield a weighted mean age of 1133 ± 3 Ma (MSWD = 1.13, P = 0.34), and are interpreted to record post-orogenic cooling. 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates from the same samples are 31–394 Ma older, and in six of nine samples cannot be explained by simple monotonic cooling, by low-temperature biotite recrystallisation, or by alteration; instead, biotite contains cryptic excess 40Ar. Diffusion modelling of 40Ar/39Ar step-heating plateaus suggests that Ar, both excess and radiogenic, is homogeneously distributed within the crystal lattice, and was incorporated during biotite crystallisation. Biotite likely crystallised in a rock with a high partial pressure of Ar, possibly due to a high rate of radiogenic 40Ar generation in a K-rich lithology, together with a poorly-connected intergranular fluid network that inhibited Ar loss from the rock volume. This is supported by a homogeneous distribution of Ar at the cm scale, with reproducible biotite 40Ar/39Ar dates from each sample. Patchy fluid circulation during metamorphism led to the pervasive but heterogeneous distribution of excess 40Ar across outcrops. Due to the presence of the 40Ar/39Ar plateau, cryptic excess 40Ar is difficult to identify a priori, without comparison to additional geochronological constraints. Where cryptic excess 40Ar on a regional scale has been identified, such as in the eastern Biranup Zone of the Albany-Fraser Orogen, Rb/Sr geochronology may provide a more robust alternative to constrain the cooling path of rocks from high temperatures.

To understand the origin of curved subduction zones has been one of the major challenges in plate tectonics. The Mongol-Okhotsk Orogen in Central Asia is characterized by the development of a U-shaped oroclinal structure that was accompanied by the continuous subduction of the Mongol-Okhotsk oceanic plate. Therefore, it provides a natural laboratory to understand why and how a subduction system became tightly curved. In this study, we provide the first structural observation around the hinge of the Mongolian Orocline (the Zag zone in Central Mongolia), with an aim to constrain the oroclinal geometry and to link hinge zone structures with the origin of the orocline. Our results show that rocks in the Zag zone are characterized by the occurrence of a penetrative foliation that is commonly subparallel to bedding. Both bedding and dominant fabric in the Zag zone are steeply dipping, and their strike orientations in a map view follow a simple curve around the hinge of the Mongolian Orocline, thus providing the first structural constraint for 3D geometry of the orocline. A secondary penetrative fabric parallel to the axial plane of the orocline was not observed, indicating a low degree of orogen-parallel shortening during oroclinal bending. Combining with available geological and geophysical data, we conclude that the Mongolian Orocline was developed in a period of Permian to Jurassic, and its origin was linked to the subduction of the Mongol-Okhotsk oceanic slab. We consider that the low-strain oroclinal bending likely resulted from the along-strike variation in trench retreat, which was either triggered by the negative buoyancy of the Mongol-Okhotsk oceanic slab, or driven by the relative rotation of the Siberian and North China cratons. Our results shed a light on 3D geometry and geodynamic mechanisms of large-scale oroclinal bending in an accretionary orogen.

40Ar/39Ar geochronology is one of the most important techniques for constraining the timing of basaltic events due to the paucity of suitable minerals in basalts for other geochronological techniques such as U–Pb (e.g., zircon, baddeleyite). Among a variety of materials from basaltic rocks that have been used for 40Ar/39Ar dating, plagioclase is the most important due to its common presence in basalts as a primary crystallizing phase, and its transparency so that fresh grains can be selected during sample preparation. However, plagioclase 40Ar/39Ar geochronology has often been compromised by alteration (e.g., sericitization by hydrothermal events), which, in practice, is difficult to identify using a petrographic microscope when the amount of alteration is low (e.g., We used laboratory step-heating experiments and theoretical simulations to characterize the 40Ar/39Ar age and Ca/K spectra of altered plagioclase so that 40Ar/39Ar dating results on altered samples can be identified and better interpreted. The step-heating experiments and theoretical simulations yielded consistent results, and show that with the presence of even a tiny amount of sericite (~0.01% for K-poor samples and ~0.1% for K-rich samples), the plagioclase samples yielded alteration plateau ages that are 3%–4% younger than the crystallization age. The difference between the alteration age of sericitized plagioclase and its crystallization age is primarily controlled by the time lapse between the crystallization and sericitization events, but also by the Ca/K ratios of the plagioclase. For plagioclase samples that experienced the same alteration event, the higher the Ca/K ratio is, the more sensitive the 40Ar/39Ar age is to alteration. We propose that the alteration signatures of plagioclase can be effectively identified through inspecting the 40Ar/39Ar age spectra, the Ca/K spectra, and the degassing curves. We also investigated the effect of sericitization of plagioclase microliths in basaltic groundmass and modelled the 40Ar/39Ar age and Ca/K spectra of altered groundmass samples. We validate our approach by revisiting published 40Ar/39Ar dating results for large igneous provinces, and showed that these dates should have been interpreted as alteration ages (minimum eruption ages) rather than crystallization ages. Finally, we demonstrate that with high degrees of alteration (~50% for K-poor and >70% for K-rich plagioclase samples), the age of hydrothermal alteration can be successfully dated.

The isotopic composition of water in Earth’s oceans is challenging to recreate using a plausible mixture of known extraterrestrial sources such as asteroids—an additional isotopically light reservoir is required. The Sun’s solar wind could provide an answer to balance Earth’s water budget. We used atom probe tomography to directly observe an average ~1 mol% enrichment in water and hydroxyls in the solar-wind-irradiated rim of an olivine grain from the S-type asteroid Itokawa. We also experimentally confirm that H+ irradiation of silicate mineral surfaces produces water molecules. These results suggest that the Itokawa regolith could contain ~20 l m−3 of solar-wind-derived water and that such water reservoirs are probably ubiquitous on airless worlds throughout our Galaxy. The production of this isotopically light water reservoir by solar wind implantation into fine-grained silicates may have been a particularly important process in the early Solar System, potentially providing a means to recreate Earth’s current water isotope ratios. Water and hydroxyl enrichment in the solar-wind-irradiated rim of an olivine grain from asteroid Itokawa suggests that its regolith could contain ~20 l m−3 of water from solar wind—a potential water source for airless planetary bodies.

The emplacement of large igneous provinces (LIPs) has been linked to catastrophic mass extinctions in Earth's history, but some LIPs are only associated with less severe oceanic anoxic events, and others have negligible environmental effects. Although it is widely accepted that massive magma outpouring can affect the environment through volatile degassing, it remains debated what controls the severity of environmental crises. Here, we demonstrate that the second-most-voluminous Phanerozoic LIP, the Kerguelen LIP, may have contributed to the early Aptian oceanic anoxic event 1a, a global event previously believed to have been caused by the Ontong Java LIP. Geochronological data show that the earliest eruptions of the Kerguelen LIP preceded the onset of oceanic anoxic event 1a by at least ∼5 million years. Analyses of CO

Rubble piles asteroids consist of reassembled fragments from shattered monolithic asteroids and are much more abundant than previously thought in the solar system. Although monolithic asteroids that are a kilometer in diameter have been predicted to have a lifespan of few 100 million years, it is currently not known how durable rubble pile asteroids are. Here, we show that rubble pile asteroids can survive ambient solar system bombardment processes for extremely long periods and potentially 10 times longer than their monolith counterparts. We studied three regolith dust particles recovered by the Hayabusa space probe from the rubble pile asteroid 25143 Itokawa using electron backscatter diffraction, time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry, atom probe tomography, and 40 Ar/ 39 Ar dating techniques. Our results show that the particles have only been affected by shock pressure of ca. 5 to 15 GPa. Two particles have 40 Ar/ 39 Ar ages of 4,219 ± 35 and 4,149 ± 41 My and when combined with thermal and diffusion models; these results constrain the formation age of the rubble pile structure to ≥4.2 billion years ago. Such a long survival time for an asteroid is attributed to the shock-absorbent nature of rubble pile material and suggests that rubble piles are hard to destroy once they are created. Our results suggest that rubble piles are probably more abundant in the asteroid belt than previously thought and provide constrain to help develop mitigation strategies to prevent asteroid collisions with Earth.

The Haughton Dome located on Devon Island, in the Canadian Archipelago represents a well-preserved, moderate-sized, complex impact crater. Previous age constraints for the 24 km-diameter impact structure have ranged from ca. 21 Ma to ca. 39 Ma. Herein, we present a coordinated microstructural and in situ U-Pb study of zircon and monazite coupled with 40Ar/39Ar laser step heating of shock-melted K-feldspar clasts from shock metamorphosed gneissic fragments collected from the allochthonous impact breccia at Haughton. Moderately shocked zircon and monazite grains yield an age distribution consistent with an Archean protolith metamorphosed at ca. 1.9 Ga, whereas shock recrystallized zircon and monazite yield a lower intercept age of 31.8 ± 1.7 Ma (n = 48, MSWD = 0.58, P = 0.99). Four inverse isochron 40Ar/39Ar ages of shocked feldspar clasts yield a weighted mean age of 31.04 ± 0.37 Ma (MSWD = 0.98, P = 0.40), within uncertainty of the U-Pb lower concordia intercept. Ar diffusion modelling supports the interpretation of the impact age and helps resolve impact-driven age resetting. These results highlight the power of coupling multiple geochronologic techniques for determining impact ages, especially from targets with complex geologic histories. Furthermore, they resolve previous discrepancies in the age of the Haughton Dome and the interpretation of the post impact stratigraphy of the crater fill.

The evolution of the Yangtze River, the longest river in Asia, provides a spectacular example for understanding the Cenozoic interaction between tectonics, climate, and surficial processes. The oldest Lower Yangtze deposits, characterized by ~100-m-thick sequences of unconsolidated conglomerate, sandstone, and siltstone, referred to as “Yangtze Gravel,” have been recently dated >23 Ma, indicating a pre-Miocene establishment of a through-going river. However, the link between river integration and tectonic evolution has never been established due to the limited study of these sediments. Here, we report sedimentology, geochronology, and provenance of the Yangtze Gravel based on 17 stratigraphic sections exposed along the Lower Yangtze River. Our new chronostratigraphic results, including 40Ar/39Ar ages from the overlying basalt and fossil-based stratigraphic correlation, suggest an early-middle Miocene age for these sediments. Detailed analysis of lithofacies reveals several sequences of coarse-grained channel-belt deposits (channel fills and bars), indicating braided alluvial deposition across the Jianghan Basin, North Jiangsu-South Yellow Sea Basin, and East China Sea Shelf Basin. This ancient Lower Yangtze River is further characterized by petrography and detrital zircon U-Pb geochronology results which show similar provenance and erosion pattern as the present-day Yangtze River. However, the ancient river in early-middle Miocene is an alluvial, bedload-dominated braided river with higher stream power and a more prolonged course flowing into the East China Sea Shelf Basin. These differences between ancient and modern Lower Yangtze River reflect varied climate and paleogeography in southeast China during the late Cenozoic. Compared with the Paleogene red-colored, halite-bearing, Ephedripite pollen-dominated, lacustrine deposits in Jianghan Basin and North Jiangsu-South Yellow Sea Basin, the deposition of yellow to green-colored, coarse-grained, arboreal pollen, and wood-dominated Yangtze Gravel indicates a drainage reorganization from hydrologically closed lakes to a through-going river system during late Oligocene to early Miocene. During Paleogene, rift basins were filled by alluvial and fluvial-lacustrine deposition with restricted flow distance and local sources. From late Oligocene to early-middle Miocene, the post-rift subsidence opens a path for the ancient Lower Yangtze River connecting the Jianghan Basin, North Jiangsu-South Yellow Sea Basin, and East China Sea Shelf Basin. We attribute the drainage reorganization of the Lower Yangtze River to be a surficial response to Cenozoic tectonics, particularly the western Pacific subduction, in southeast China. The deposition of the widespread, coarse-grained Yangtze Gravel is probably due to the combined effects of catchment expansion and strong monsoonal climate in East Asia.

The Lipovany and Mučín paleobotanical localities contain important floral associations within the tuff horizons, which were used for determination of subtropical to tropical climatic conditions during the Early Miocene. Based on the combination of results from plagioclase and biotite 40Ar/39Ar dating, the age of the tuff deposition is around 17.3Ma. For the Lipovany locality, single-grain 40Ar/39Ar convergent ages of 17.49±0.54Ma and 17.28±0.06Ma, for plagioclase and biotite were obtained, respectively. The Mučín locality only provide an imprecise convergent age of 16.5±1.4Ma due to the small size of the analyzed plagioclase crystals. The results thus allowed to include the fossil subtropical flora of the studied localities in the late Ottnangian regional stage (upper part of the Burdigalian). Additionally, these age data indicate that deposition of the overlaying Salgótarján Formation starts much later than originally thought (during Ottnangian-Karpatian boundary).

The possibility of a "death from above" cause for biotic crises and extinction events is intriguing, to say the least, but such claims must be supported by reliable and reproducible data, not only impact diagnostic criteria, but also accurate and precise radioisotopic ages of the impact structures/events. To date, only one example of such an impact-related global extinction event is confirmed, at the end of the Cretaceous period. Here we present and discuss results of newly obtained Ar-40/Ar-39 data from step heating analysis of impact melt rock samples from the 40 km-in-diameter Puchezh-Katunki impact structure, Russia, which allow us to precisely and accurately date its formation at 195.9 +/- 1.0 Ma (2 sigma; P = 0.10). Based on these new data, we challenge the proposed temporal correlation with as many as five different extinction events (including the end-Triassic mass extinction) that were based on previous age estimations ranging from similar to 164 to 203 Ma. Our new age for the formation of the Puchezh-Katunki impact structure allows us to exclude a relationship between this impact event and a known extinction event. We also show that careful sample preparation and methodology can overcome problems with inherited and trapped Ar-40, issues that are common when dating impact melt rocks. This is supported by Ar-40* diffusion and mixing numerical models showing that the most prominent negative effects in the case of the Puchezh-Katunki impact melt rock samples are caused by hydrothermal alteration and undegassed melt rock domains present in an otherwise homogenized melt rock. Numerical modeling also shows that the Ar-40* from high-Ca inherited crystals or clasts is decoupled from the melt rock during step heating experiments allowing to safely recover a plateau age. Finally, our results highlight the importance of improving the database of ages of impact structures and show that caution should be practiced when suggesting connections between specific impact events and extinction events, especially in the case of poorly dated impact structures. Mineralization along continental suture zones is facilitated through the frequent presence of pathways from fertile mantle source regions to crustal repositories. Due to their inherent rheological weakness, these suture zones are often concealed, which hinders surface-based observations. Here, we use zircon U-Pb and sericite 40Ar/39Ar dating, and whole-rock geochemical data, to investigate the crystallization and mineralization history from a sequence of granites (sensu lato), volcanic rocks and sedimentary rocks from the Au–Ag–Pb–Zn Empress Springs Project in northeast Australia, which are under >50 m of Phanerozoic cover and located near the interpreted ca. 1.6 Ga tectonic boundary between the North Australia Craton (Mount Isa Inlier) and Laurentia (Georgetown Inlier). Zircon U-Pb dating indicates that granite emplacement, volcanic eruptions and dolerite intrusions occurred between 1564 ± 6 and 1546 ± 13 Ma (2σ), corresponding to the 1560–1550 Ma Esmeralda Supersuite and the Croydon Volcanic Group exposed in the western Georgetown Inlier. U-Pb ages from detrital zircon grains in a sedimentary rock revealed a near unimodal ca. 1560 Ma population, likely sourced from the surrounding granitic and volcanic rocks. Sericite 40Ar/39Ar dating yielded disturbed spectra with evidence for incorporation of excess radiogenic Ar, but with a probable Carboniferous to Permian age, potentially dating the timing of gold mineralization. Geochemical similarities point towards an epithermal origin for the Empress Springs Project, consistent with post-orogenic mineralization at either ca. 1560–1550 Ma or 330–250 Ma. It is likely that a series of west-dipping lithospheric-scale faults below the Empress Springs Project, here termed the Empress Suture Zone, demarcate the final suture zone associated with the assembly of Nuna. Reactivation of the Empress Suture Zone ~1.3 b.y. after crystallization with potential contemporaneous gold mineralization attests to its longevity for fluid mobility.

The 40Ar/39Ar dating method is among the most versatile of geochronometers, having the potential to date a broad variety of K-bearing materials spanning from the time of Earth’s formation into the historical realm. Measurements using modern noble-gas mass spectrometers are now producing 40Ar/39Ar dates with analytical uncertainties of ~0.1%, thereby providing precise time constraints for a wide range of geologic and extraterrestrial processes. Analyses of increasingly smaller subsamples have revealed age dispersion in many materials, including some minerals used as neutron fluence monitors. Accordingly, interpretive strategies are evolving to address observed dispersion in dates from a single sample. Moreover, inferring a geologically meaningful “age” from a measured “date” or set of dates is dependent on the geological problem being addressed and the salient assumptions associated with each set of data. We highlight requirements for collateral information that will better constrain the interpretation of 40Ar/39Ar data sets, including those associated with single-crystal fusion analyses, incremental heating experiments, and in situ analyses of microsampled domains. To ensure the utility and viability of published results, we emphasize previous recommendations for reporting 40Ar/39Ar data and the related essential metadata, with the amendment that data conform to evolving standards of being findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable (FAIR) by both humans and computers. Our examples provide guidance for the presentation and interpretation of 40Ar/39Ar dates to maximize their interdisciplinary usage, reproducibility, and longevity.

Murrili, the third meteorite recovered by the Desert Fireball Network, is analyzed using mineralogy, oxygen isotopes, bulk chemistry, physical properties, noble gases, and cosmogenic radionuclides. The modal mineralogy, bulk chemistry, magnetic susceptibility, physical properties, and oxygen isotopes of Murrili point to it being an H5 ordinary chondrite. It is heterogeneously shocked (S2–S5), depending on the method used to determine it, although Murrili is not obviously brecciated in texture. Cosmogenic radionuclides yield a cosmic ray exposure age of 6–8 Ma, and a pre‐atmospheric meteoroid size of 15–20 cm in radius. Murrili’s fall and subsequent month‐long embedment into the salt lake Kati Thanda significantly altered the whole rock, evident in its Mossbauer spectra, and visual inspection of cut sections. Murrili may have experienced minor, but subsequent, impacts after its formation 4475.3 ± 2.3 Ma, which left it heterogeneously shocked.

The evolution of the largest accretionary orogen in the world, the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB), involved a prolonged accretion history since the Neoproterozoic, followed by a collisional phase in response to the closure of the Paleo-Asian Ocean in the latest Paleozoic. The exact process for the tectonic transition from subduction to collision is still poorly constrained. Here we address this issue by investigating the late Paleozoic tectonic evolution of the Chinese Altai and Tianshan orogens in the western CAOB. We provide new geochronological data from two areas of the Chinese Altai and Tianshan orogens, which allow us to link polyphase deformation with orogenic processes. In the Fuyun area of the Chinese Altai Orogen, we conducted monazite U-Pb dating on four samples that show pervasive foliations with the originally sub-horizontal orientation (DS2/DQ2). The monazite U-Pb ages cluster at ∼284 to 281 Ma, which interpreted to represent the time of sub-horizontal foliations (DS2/DQ2) that may result from orogen-parallel extension related to the collision of the Chinese Altai Orogen with the East Junggar Terrane. Farther south, in the Gangou area of the Chinese Tianshan Orogen, we obtained a muscovite 40Ar/39Ar plateau age of 256.6 ± 0.6 Ma for a mica schist from the dextral South Central Tianshan Shear Zone. This age confirms the Permian activity of dextral strike-slip deformation (DCT4) in the Chinese Tianshan Orogen. In contrast, three mylonitic schist/granitoid samples from the dextral Main Tianshan Shear Zone are characterized by 40Ar/39Ar plateau ages of 353.9 ± 1.9 Ma (biotite), 353.9 ± 1.5 Ma (biotite) and 352.1 ± 0.7 Ma (muscovite). We interpret these early Carboniferous ages to either represent a pre-Permian dextral shearing event, or to record an early Carboniferous tectono-thermal event with recrystallized micas not reset during the Permian strike-slip deformation (DCT4). An additional 40Ar/39Ar plateau age of 280.9 ± 0.5 Ma (hornblende) from a mafic dike (dolerite) that crosscuts macroscopic folds (DST2) in the southern Chinese Tianshan Orogen, provides a minimum time constraint for these folds. This age supports the simultaneous folding deformation (DST2) with dextral shearing (DCT4) in the Chinese Tianshan Orogen. Combined with a comprehensive synthesis of available geological and geochronological data, we argue that orogen-parallel extension and transpressional tectonics might have played a significant role in the late Paleozoic arc/continental amalgamation of the western CAOB.

New geochronological data provide evidence for Permo-Triassic low-sulfidation epithermal gold-silver mineralization in the Cordillera Frontal, Argentina. The U-Pb sensitive high-resolution ion microprobe (SHRIMP) analyses on zircons and titanite gave the following results: (1) andesite and rhyolite volcanic host rocks of the Casposo Au-Ag deposit yielded a range of ages between 267.1 ± 0.7 and 241.7 ± 2.2 Ma; (2) two composite plutons located near Casposo yielded ages of 268.2 ± 1.5 and 265.1 ± 1.5 Ma for the Colorado syenogranite-granite pluton and 266.6 ± 1.4 and 254.0 ± 2.4 Ma for the Casposo granodiorite-tonalite pluton; (3) a trachyandesite dike emplaced at 265.7 ± 1.2 Ma that is crosscut by mineralized quartz-adularia-calcite-gold veins in the Kamila East area; (4) felsite intrusions, interpreted to be temporally related to the emplacement of mineralized veins at 261.1 ± 3.5 Ma; and (5) composite rhyolite/andesite dikes that crosscut all other lithostratigraphic units and mineralized veins at 238.4 ± 1.6 Ma. The 40Ar/39Ar dates on hydrothermal adularia within quartz-adularia-calcite-gold veins of the Casposo deposit revealed at least three, likely discreet, hydro-thermal fluid pulses and associated periods of vein formation during extensional events between 280–274, 262–258, and 250–246 Ma. Relative and absolute timing of volcanic host rocks, plutons, postmineralization felsic dikes, and gold-bearing veins of the Casposo epithermal vein system suggest the presence of significant Permian (Cisuralian)-Lower Triassic low-sulfidation epithermal-style gold-silver mineralization at the eastern flank of the Cordillera Principal in Argentina. The existence of this epithermal Au-Ag system opens the potential for a significant magmatic-hydrothermal system in a part of the Andes that previously was considered to be of low prospectivity.

Large igneous provinces (LIPs) typically form in one short pulse of ∼1–5 Ma or several punctuated ∼1–5 Ma pulses. Here, our 25 new 40Ar/39Ar plateau ages for the main construct of the Kerguelen LIP—the Cretaceous Southern and Central Kerguelen Plateau, Elan Bank, and Broken Ridge—show continuous volcanic activity from ca. 122 to 90 Ma, a long lifespan of >32 Ma. This suggests that the Kerguelen LIP records the longest, continuous high-magma-flux emplacement interval of any LIP. Distinct from both short-lived and multiple-pulsed LIPs, we propose that Kerguelen is a different type of LIP that formed through long-term interactions between a mantle plume and mid-ocean ridge, which is enabled by multiple ridge jumps, slow spreading, and migration of the ridge. Such processes allow the transport of magma products away from the eruption center and result in long-lived, continuous magmatic activity.

The Miocene Cuonadong leucogranites in the easternmost section of the Tethyan Himalaya, Southern Tibet, are characterized by two types of tourmaline. Tourmaline occurs as needle-like crystals in the two-mica ± tourmaline granites (Tur G) and large patches in the pegmatites (Tur P). Both the granite and the pegmatites yield Miocene ages (ca. 20 Ma) based on monazite U(-Th)-Pb dating, whereas 40Ar/39Ar geochronology of the coarse-grained tourmalines (Tur P) crosscut by pegmatite veins yielded an Eocene mini-plateau age of 43 ± 6 Ma. Major element concentrations of tourmaline indicate that both Tur P and Tur G belong to the schorl group with a magmatic origin, but trace elements such as V indicate that they are not cogenetic. Boron isotopes suggest that Tur P (average –9.76‰) was derived from typical crustal sources, whereas Tur G (average –7.65‰) contains relatively more mafic input. The capture of Eocene tourmaline by the Miocene leucogranites at Cuonadong suggests that the crustally derived Eocene magmatism may have occurred in the southern Tethyan Himalaya. Identification of the inherited magmatic tourmaline (Tur P), although not common, challenges the current application of tourmaline chemistry to the investigation of magmatic-hydrothermal systems.

The First Bend on the Yangtze River (China), the point where the river ceases flowing toward the south and heads toward the northeast, has been one of the most strongly debated geomorphic features in Asia because it holds the key to understanding the history of the Yangtze River and is linked to the tectonically driven surface uplift of the southeastern Tibetan Plateau. Mid- to upper Eocene sedimentary rocks preserved in the Jianchuan Basin located immediately southwest of the First Bend demonstrate that a large river system, presumably the paleo–Jinshajiang River (the upper Yangtze), used to flow south through that region. Provenance analysis of sediments over the wider region, based mostly on U-Pb dating of detrital zircon grains, confirms that the once south-flowing paleo–Yangtze River originated in the Tibetan Plateau and flowed into the South China Sea. Inversion of the Jianchuan Basin, starting in or after the latest Eocene and associated with wider plateau surface uplift at that time, caused the river to be diverted toward the northeast where it was confined along tectonic lineaments associated with strike-slip faulting, giving birth to the First Bend, a major step in the formation of the modern Yangtze River.

We present 40Ar/39Ar ages and boron isotopes of tourmalines from a quartz-tourmaline intrusion cross-cutting the Hadean detrital-zircon-bearing metasedimentary rocks from the Mt. Alfred and Brooking Hills localities of the Illaara Greenstone Belt, Western Australia. Concordant 40Ar/39Ar plateau ages on the tourmalines at Mt. Alfred give a weighted mean age of 2935 ± 9 Ma (2σ). These results are the first reported Archean 40Ar/39Ar ages directly obtained on tourmaline, and provide a minimum depositional age for this sequence, placing constraints on the depositional timing of detrital Hadean zircons to between 2935 ± 9 Ma and c.a. 3250 Ma (youngest detrital zircon age in sequence). This is the last known occurrence of abundant detrital Hadean zircons having been directly deposited in a sedimentary sequence, and thus suggests that most Hadean zircon sources have been exhausted by this time. The 2935 ± 9 Ma tourmalines occur within a quartz-tourmaline intrusion with associated stratiform layers and veins, inferred to have grown during a hydrothermal fluid circulation event. A younger generation of tourmalines from the Brooking Hills, 30 km south of Mt. Alfred yielded concordant 40Ar/39Ar plateau ages with a weighted mean age of 2624 ± 16 Ma. These tourmalines occur within and along the margins of post-kinematic quartz veins, parallel to the foliation fabric and marks the end stage of high temperature tectono-thermal events within the Illaara Greenstone Belt. The retention of 2935 ± 9 Ma tourmaline ages within the Illaara Greenstone Belt shows that the K/Ar system of tourmaline remained closed throughout repeated upper-greenschist metamorphic events (∼450 °C) between the ages of c.a. 2930 to 2630 Ma in contrast to muscovite recording plateau ages of about 2600 Ma. This is in agreement with an approximate Ar closure temperature between ∼534 and 628 °C experimentally determined in this study.

The Central Asian Orogenic Belt, as the largest accretionary orogen on Earth, is an ideal candidate to study the geodynamics of convergent plate boundaries through a prolonged period. The evolution of this orogen has been explained by different tectonic models, which incorporated one, or a combination, of the following mechanisms: lateral stacking of arc systems along major shear zones, arc amalgamation, oroclinal bending, and trench migration. Here we elucidate major mechanisms responsible for the tectonic evolution of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt, focusing on the Chinese Tianshan Orogen in the southern Central Asian Orogenic Belt. Structural observations from the ∼50-km-long Gangou section show evidence of polyphase deformation. The earliest episode of orogen-parallel sinistral shearing, constrained to the Early Devonian (ca. 399 Ma) by syn-deformational intrusions, was possibly controlled by oblique subduction. This was followed by an episode of ∼NE–SW contractional deformation, dated at ca. 356 Ma (40Ar/39Ar age of syn-deformational hornblende), and likely associated with an episode of trench advance. The third stages of deformation during the latest Carboniferous and Permian involved ∼NE-SW contraction, orogen-parallel extension, and dextral transpression. Our new geochronological data constrain the timing of orogen-parallel extension to ca. 303–293 Ma, and confirm that dextral activation along shear zones occurred during the Permian. The results highlight the role of trench migration, oblique tectonics, and syn-collisional orogen-parallel extension in the build-up of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt, and contribute to the pre-collisional reconstruction of this orogenic system.

Atom probe tomography (APT) is used to quantify atomic-scale elemental and isotopic compositional variations within a very small volume of material (typically µm3). The small analytical volume ideally contains specific compositional or microstructural targets that can be placed within the context of the previously characterized surface in order to facilitate a correct interpretation of APT data. In this regard, careful targeting and preparation are paramount to ensure that the desired target, which is often smaller than 100 nm, is optimally located within the APT specimen. Needle-shaped specimens required for atom probe analysis are commonly prepared using a focused ion beam scanning electron microscope (FIB-SEM). Here, we utilize FIB-SEM-based time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) to illustrate a novel approach to targeting

Eucrites are extraterrestrial basalts and cumulate gabbros formed, and subsequently more or less metamorphosed, at the crustal level of the HED (Howardite-Eucrite-Diogenite) parent body, thought to be the asteroid 4 Vesta. Unbrecciated eucrites offer the best way to understand the igneous, metamorphic and cooling processes occurring in the crust of Vesta following accretion since they were not substantially affected/altered by secondary impact processes. The 40Ar/39Ar system of unbrecciated eucrites should be in a relatively pristine state, and thus can inform us on the early volcanic and thermal history of the HED parent body, and, in particular, the cooling history of various crustal parts below the ∼300 °C isotherm, which represents the average closure temperature of the Ar diffusion in plagioclase. We analysed plagioclase and pyroxene (± groundmass) separates of two cumulate (Moore County and Moama), and five (Caldera, BTN 00300, EET 90020, GRA 98098, QUE 97053) equilibrated basaltic eucrites with the 40Ar/39Ar technique using a Thermo© ARGUS VI multi-collection mass spectrometer. The two cumulate unequilibrated gabbros also gave cooling ages of 4531 ± 11 Ma and 4533 ± 12 Ma and combined with a fast cooling rate estimated from lamella thicknesses, suggest that magmatic activity persisted up to 4533 ± 11 and 4535 ± 12 Ma and that the plutons were intruded in a relatively shallow part of the crust, above the metamorphosed regions. Four equilibrated eucrites yielded a well-defined cluster of ages between 4523 ± 8 Ma to 4514 ± 6 Ma. Those ages indicate when the part of the upper crust, where those eucrites probably resided (∼10–15 km deep), cooled below ∼300 °C at a rate of 17.3 ± 3.6 °C/Ma (2σ). Such a slow cooling rate combined with available global thermal models, supports the hypothesis of a global crustal metamorphism by burial and reheating of lava flows. Finally, an age of 4531 ± 5 Ma was obtained for metamorphosed eucrite EET 90020 and, combined with petrographic observations, indicates the age of a major crustal excavation event by impact. 40Ar diffusion models suggest that it is possible to differentiate impact vs crustal cooling provided that a sufficient quantity of pyroxene is measured by 40Ar/39Ar.

Large Igneous Provinces (LIPs) represent exceptionally brief (110 km) cannot produce magmas with chemical compositions similar to those of CAMP basalts. Therefore, our results suggest that CAMP magmatism was produced by asthenospheric upwelling along the deep cratonic keels and subsequent decompression-induced partial melting in correspondence with thinner lithosphere. Afterwards, lateral transport of magma along dykes or sills led to the formation of shallow intrusions and lava flows at considerable distances from the source region, possibly straddling the edges of the cratonic lithosphere at depth. Overall, the variations of the lithospheric thickness (i.e., the presence of stable thick cratonic keels juxtaposed to relatively thinner lithosphere) appear to play a primary role for localizing mantle upwelling and partial melting during large-scale magmatic events like the CAMP.

Εpithermal and porphyry-type mineralization is genetically associated with acidic dyke rocks in a part of the supra-detachment Western Thrace Basin. 40Ar/39Ar ages on biotite of an andesitic lava dome and on K-feldspar of quartz-feldspar porphyritic dykes were determined and thus, new temporal constraints on the age of volcanism and mineralization were obtained. Biotite of an andesitic lava dome yields a 40Ar/39Ar plateau age of 33.05 ± 0.07 Ma (P=0.12). The dated andesite is considered as representative of the andesitic-dacitic rocks of large volcanic and subvolcanic bodies in the Western Thrace basin (Mavropetra Formation, Kirki area). Andesitic rocks indicate affinities of calc-alkaline to high-K calc-alkaline series magmatism. They are coeval to the high-K calc-alkaline magmatic suite of Leptokarya – Kirki, which forms an ENE-WSW 30 km long magmatic dome, developed between the Rhodope metamorphics extending northwards and the overlying detached Melia non-metamorphic formations and Middle-Upper Eocene molassic clastics, extending southwards.Smaller bodies of acidic dyke rocks (rhyolite and quartz-feldspar porphyry), crosscut the overall dome structure with the andesitic-dacitic volcanics, the Middle-Upper Eocene clastic sediments, the mafic rocks of the Melia unit, the metamorphics of the Kechros Unit of Rhodope and the Leptokarya - Kirki granitoids. They appear with planar subvertical boundaries following a general NNW-SSE trend, perpendicular to the main ENE-WSW dome structure. They are concentrated along a major fault zone (Ag. Filippos fault), with high- to intermediate sulfidation epithermal polymetallic sulfide mineralization, as well as in a roughly 8 km long and 1 km wide fracture zone to the east and northeast of Aisymi village with porphyry-type mineralization. Structural observations document the mega-tension gashes nature of the dykes with pronounced sinistral strike-slip kinematic indicators of the Kirki mineralized tectonic zone. K-feldspars from quartz-feldspar porphyritic dykes at Kirki yield a 40Ar/39Ar plateau age of a 31.89 ± 0.12 Ma (P=0.08). The acidic dyke rocks contain calc-alkaline to high-K calc-alkaline differentiation trends. They exhibit marked enrichment of LREE relative to the HREE, flat HREE pattern, negative Eu anomaly and Eu/Eu* values ranging between 0.32 and 0.82.In conclusion, the ENE-SSW Leptokarya - Kirki granitic dome was developed contemporaneously with the andesitic-dacitic volcanics at the contact between the Rhodope metamorphics and the detached Melia formations and Middle-Upper Eocene clastics at about 33 Ma, followed by the NNW-SSE transverse faults and acidic dykes with epithermal and porphyry-type mineralization at about 32 Ma.

The emplacement of large igneous provinces (LIPs) has been linked to catastrophic mass extinctions in Earth’s history, but some LIPs are only associated with less severe oceanic anoxic events, and others have negligible environmental effects. Although it is widely accepted that massive magma outpouring can affect the environment through volatile degassing, it remains debated what controls the severity of environmental crises. Here, we demonstrate that the second-most-voluminous Phanerozoic LIP, the Kerguelen LIP, may have contributed to the early Aptian oceanic anoxic event 1a, a global event previously believed to have been caused by the Ontong Java LIP. Geochronological data show that the earliest eruptions of the Kerguelen LIP preceded the onset of oceanic anoxic event 1a by at least ∼5 million years. Analyses of CO 2 abundances in melt inclusions combined with Monte Carlo simulations reveal that the volume and degassing rate of CO 2 emissions from the Kerguelen LIP are an order of magnitude lower compared to LIPs that caused severe mass extinctions. We propose that the severity of volcanism-related environmental and biotic perturbations is positively correlated with the volume and rate of CO 2 emissions. Our results highlight the significant importance of reducing and slowing down CO 2 emission in preventing future disastrous environmental consequences.

The Late Cretaceous magmatism in Madagascar is correlated with the break-up between Madagascar and Greater India, with a presumed track of a hotspot from Madagascar towards the Marion Island and with an anoxic event in the Late Cretaceous. The lava succession and associated dyke swarms and sills of western Madagascar (Mailaka area) represent a volumetrically important area of the igneous province, where dykes with random orientation, several igneous intrusions and a flood basalt to rhyodacite sequence do occur. The magmas have a tholeiitic and weakly alkaline affinity. Using plagioclase separates, we obtained two plateau 40Ar/39Ar ages, and an inverse isochron age statistically indistinguishable, ranging from 92.9 ± 3.8 to 91.2 ± 1.3 Ma (2σ). These ages indicate that tholeiitic and alkaline rocks were erupted in the same age span. In addition, these ages are close to the Cenomanian–Turonian (C–T; 93.9 ± 0.2 Ma) boundary and are indistinguishable from the U–Pb ages available for the capping rhyodacitic unit of the Mailaka lava succession. A filtered compilation of eight ages for northern and central-western Madagascar rocks suggests a duration for the magmatic activity in this part of Madagascar province of the order of c. 3 Ma. If the western Madagascar magmatism is plume related, the plume head would need to have been located near the Mailaka area at c. 93 Ma. The geochemistry of the mafic lavas and dykes of western Madagascar is barely distinguishable from mid-ocean ridge basalt (MORB), with an increasing crustal contamination towards the evolved rocks, and does not constrain input of typical components derived by plume magmatism.

The Balleny and Scott volcanic provinces are two isolated and remote volcanic occurrences located along the rifted margin of Western Antarctica in the Ross Sea. They include oceanic plateaus, seamounts, and volcanic islands. Although volcanic activity has been documented through remote sensing, there is no geochronological data based on radio-isotope methods constraining the duration of the volcanic activity in this region. As a consequence, hypotheses, based on the interpretation of chemical characteristics of the lavas, that suggested the volcanism to be either the result a deep mantle plume or a large-scale shallow melting anomaly have not yet been tested decisively. In order to tackle this issue, we have now dated lavas dredged from seamounts from both Balleny and Scott provinces using the Ar-40/Ar-39 technique. Our new age dates suggest that the Balleny and Scott volcanic provinces were active since at least 2.8 Ma and 2.4 Ma respectively. This suggests that these volcanic provinces were active simultaneously to the magmatism of the McMurdo volcanic group in the Western Antarctica Rift System that comprises Mount Erebus and Mount Melbourne stratovolcanoes. Our new dates suggest that there is no obvious age trend across the Balleny and Scott provinces. Combined with plate reconstructions since the end of Mesozoic, these data suggest that the Scott province does not coincide with any potential hot-spot track, thus negating a deep mantle plume origin for this volcanism. The case of the Balleny province is more ambiguous. The hypothesis of this province representing the end of the Tasman seamounts chain formed by a hot-spot track with decreasing-age trend is not confirmed by the new geochronological data, since available dates for the region are rather scarce and unreliable for the Tasman seamounts. Therefore, we suggest that the Balleny and Scott provinces originated from shallow mantle melting processes, a hypothesis that seems to be consistent with our re-interpretation of the Sr-Nd-Pb isotope data of the lavas from the Balleny and Scott provinces. We argue that these provinces were derived from a heterogeneous subcontinental lithospheric mantle metasomatized during ancient subductions and which is now scattered in the shallow mantle of the southwest Pacific realm. This scattered mantle source component has been melting since the beginning of Cenozoic, and was then progressively depleted in the most fusible components. This new working model can explain the presence of several magmatic provinces in the southwest Pacific-Antarctica realm which show similar chemical signatures.

Sample return shows late lunar volcanism Measuring physical samples of Solar System bodies in the laboratory provides more information than is possible from remote sensing alone. In December 2020, the Chang’e-5 mission landed on the Moon, collected samples, and returned them to Earth. Che et al . analyze two fragments of volcanic lunar basalt collected by Chang’e-5. Radiometric dating using lead isotopes indicated that the rocks formed from magma that erupted about 2 billion years ago, later than other volcanic lunar samples. The abundance of extinct radioactive elements in the rock is too low for radioactive heating to have produced the magma. Another, thus far unknown, source must be responsible for the late lunar volcanism. —KTS

The composite Albian–Eocene orogenic wedge of the northern part of the Inner Western Carpathians (IWC) comprises the European Variscan basement with the Upper Carboniferous–Triassic cover and the Jurassic to Upper Cretaceous sedimentary successions of a large oceanic–continental Atlantic (Alpine) Tethys basin system. This paper presents an updated evolutionary model for principal structural units of the orogenic wedge (i.e., Fatricum, Tatricum and Infratatricum) based on new and published white mica 40Ar/39Ar geochronology and P–T estimates by Perple_X modeling and geothermobarometry. The north-directed Cretaceous collision led to closure of the Jurassic–Early Cretaceous basins, and incorporation of their sedimentary infill and a thinned basement into the Albian–Cenomanian/Turonian accretionary wedge. During this compressional D1 stage, the subautochthonous Fatric structural units, including the present-day higher Infratatric nappes, achieved the metamorphic conditions of ca. 250–400 °C and 400–700 MPa. The collapse of the Albian–Cenomanian/Turonian wedge and contemporary southward Penninic oceanic subduction enhanced the extensional exhumation of the low-grade metamorphosed structural complexes (D2 stage) and the opening of a fore-arc basin. This basin hemipelagic Coniacian–Campanian Couches-Rouges type marls (C.R.) spread from the northern Tatric edge, throughout the Infratatric Belice Basin, up to the peri-Pieniny Klippen Belt Kysuca Basin, thus tracing the south-Penninic subduction. The ceasing subduction switched to the compressional regime recorded in the trench-like Belice “flysch” trough formation and the lower anchi-metamorphism of the C.R. at ca. 75–65 Ma (D3 stage). The Belice trough closure was followed by the thrusting of the exhumed low-grade metamorphosed higher Infratatric complexes and the anchi-metamorphosed C.R. over the frontal unmetamorphosed to lowest anchi-metamorphosed Upper Campanian–Maastrichtian “flysch” sediments at ca. 65–50 Ma (D4 stage). Phengite from the Infratatric marble sample SRB-1 and meta-marl sample HC-12 produced apparent 40Ar/39Ar step ages clustered around 90 Ma. A mixture interpretation of this age is consistent with the presence of an older metamorphic Ph1 related to the burial (D1) within the Albian–Cenomanian/Turonian accretionary wedge. On the contrary, a younger Ph2 is closely related to the late- to post-Campanian (D3) thrust fault formation over the C.R. Celadonite-enriched muscovite from the subautochthonous Fatric Zobor Nappe meta-quartzite sample ZI-3 yielded a mini-plateau age of 62.21 ± 0.31 Ma which coincides with the closing of the Infratatric foreland Belice “flysch” trough, the accretion of the Infratatricum to the Tatricum, and the formation of the rear subautochthonous Fatricum bivergent structure in the Eocene orogenic wedge.
