7. Demography and Viability of a Central Maine Population of Wood Turtles (Glyptemys insculpta).

Abstract

The wood turtle (Glyptemys insculpta) is experiencing widespread declines throughout its range in the eastern United States and Canada. Maine has been considered a stronghold for the species due to an abundance of suitable upland and stream habitat. Furthermore, recent studies have identified Maine as a potentially important climate refuge for wood turtles. Using data collected in a 5-yr capture–mark–recapture study on a wood turtle population in central Maine, we estimate population size, apparent survival rates, population growth rates, and population viability. We also performed a sensitivity analysis to illustrate the impacts of slight perturbations to demographic rates. Our estimated total population size is 73 (95% CI = 69–85) individuals. Annual apparent survival varied across years, ranging from 80.5% to 97.5%, with females having a slightly higher survival at 94.9% (95% CI = 81.6%–97.8%) than males at 92.8% (95% CI = 77.6%–97.4%). The baseline population viability analysis model predicted a k of 0.93 (95% CI = 0.91–0.95) and a 100% probability of extinction within 150 yrs. Despite some broad permutations in our baseline demographic parameters, there were no scenarios included within our sensitivity analysis that increased the population's growth rate to a positive value. These results have implications for the long-term persistence of wood turtles in Maine and throughout their range. Abstract

The COVID‐19 pandemic and its related human activity shutdowns provide unique opportunities for biodiversity monitoring through what has been termed the "anthropause" or the "great human confinement experiment." The pandemic caused immense disruption to human activity in the northeastern United States in the spring of 2020, with notable reductions in traffic levels. These shutdowns coincided with the seasonal migration of adult amphibians, which are typically subject to intense vehicle‐impact mortality. Using data collected as part of an annual community science monitoring program in Maine from 2018 to 2021, we examined how amphibian mortality probabilities responded to reductions in traffic during the pandemic. While we detected a 50% decline for all amphibians, this was driven entirely by reductions in frog mortality. Wildlife collision data from the Maine Department of Transportation on other wildlife species support our finding of drastic declines in wildlife road mortality in spring 2020 when compared with immediately previous and subsequent years. Additionally, we find that frogs suffer significantly higher road mortality than salamanders, particularly when conditions are warmer and wetter. The COVID‐19 pandemic of 2020 caused immense disruptions in human activity, including traffic levels. Abstract

The article informs that male Glyptemys insculpta or wood turtle are known for their impressive homing abilities and site fidelity. However, a recent study reports an extreme example of long-distance movement in a male wood turtle, which traveled 34.8 km in two years, the longest recorded movement for this species. The study highlights the unusual life history of wood turtles, which move between aquatic overwintering and terrestrial foraging habitats.

14. Comparing Responsiveness of Nocturnal and Diurnal Primates to Different Sensory Enrichment Conditions.

Abstract

Sensory enrichment has been used to improve the welfare of nocturnal and diurnal primates in captivity. This study looked at whether nocturnal and diurnal primate species would respond differently to four sensory enrichment conditions based on the differences in their natural history. Subjects were two nocturnal primates, pygmy slow lorises and douroucouli monkeys, and two diurnal primates, golden lion tamarin and black and white ruffed lemur. In general, diurnal primates were found to respond more to the olfactory, auditory, and tactile enrichment than nocturnal primates. The nocturnal primates were found to be more responsive to visual enrichment. These results may be used to suggest what types of sensory enrichment could be most effective for these species.
