We present the second and final release of optical spectroscopy of Type Ia Supernovae (SNe Ia) obtained during the first and second phases of the Carnegie Supernova Project (CSP-I and CSP-II). The newly released data consist of 148 spectra of 30 SNe Ia observed in the course of the CSP-I, and 234 spectra of 127 SNe Ia obtained during the CSP-II. We also present 216 optical spectra of 46 historical SNe Ia, including 53 spectra of 30 SNe Ia observed by the Cal\'an/Tololo Supernova Survey. We combine these observations with previously published CSP data and publicly-available spectra to compile a large sample of measurements of spectroscopic parameters at maximum light, consisting of pseudo-equivalent widths and expansion velocities of selected features, for 232 CSP and historical SNe Ia (including more than 1000 spectra). Finally, we review some of the strongest correlations between spectroscopic and photometric properties of SNe Ia. Specifically, we define two samples: one consisting of SNe Ia discovered by targeted searches (most of them CSP-I objects) and the other composed of SNe Ia discovered by untargeted searches, which includes most of the CSP-II objects. The analysed correlations are similar for both samples. We find a larger incidence of SNe Ia belonging to the Cool (CL)and Broad Line (BL) Branch subtypes among the events discovered by targeted searches, Shallow Silicon (SS) SNe Ia are present with similar frequencies in both samples, while Core Normal (CN) SNe Ia are more frequent in untargeted searches., Comment: 59 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal. Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) are more precise standardizable candles when measured in the near-infrared (NIR) than in the optical. With this motivation, from 2012-2017 we embarked on the RAISIN program with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) to obtain rest-frame NIR light curves for a cosmologically distant sample of 37 SN Ia ($0.2 \lesssim z \lesssim 0.6$) discovered by Pan-STARRS and the Dark Energy Survey. By comparing higher-$z$ HST data with 42 SN Ia at $z<0.1$ observed in the NIR by the Carnegie Supernova Project, we construct a Hubble diagram from NIR observations (with only time of maximum light and some selection cuts from optical data) to pursue a unique avenue to constrain the dark energy equation of state parameter, $w$. We analyze the dependence of the full set of Hubble residuals on the SN Ia host galaxy mass and find Hubble residual steps of size $\sim$0.06-0.1~mag with 1.5- to 2.5-$\sigma$ significance depending on the method and step location. Combining our NIR sample with CMB constraints, we find $1+w=-0.17\pm0.12$ (stat$+$syst). The largest systematic errors are the redshift-dependent SN selection biases and the properties of the NIR mass step. We also use these data to measure $H_0=75.9\pm 2.2$ km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$ from stars with geometric distance calibration in the hosts of 8 SNe Ia observed in the NIR versus $H_0=71.2\pm3.8$ km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$ using an inverse distance ladder approach tied to Planck. Using optical data we find $1+w=-0.10\pm0.09$ and with optical and NIR data combined, we find $1+w=-0.06\pm0.07$; these shifts of up to 0.11 in $w$ could point to inconsistency in optical versus NIR SN models. The evolution of galaxies is imprinted in their stellar populations. Several stellar population properties in massive early-type galaxies have been shown to correlate with intrinsic galaxy properties like the galaxy's central velocity dispersion, suggesting that stars formed in an initial collapse of gas (z~2). However, stellar populations change as a function of galaxy radius, and it is not clear how local gradients of individual galaxies are influenced by global galaxy properties and galaxy environment. In this paper, we study the stellar populations of eight early-type galaxies as a function of radius. We use optical spectroscopy (~4000-8600 \r{A}) and full-spectral fitting to measure stellar population age, metallicity, IMF slope, and nine elemental abundances (O, Mg, Si, Ca, Ti, C, N, Na, Fe) out to 1 R_e for each galaxy individually. We find a wide range of properties, with ages ranging from 3-13 Gyr. Some galaxies have a radially constant, Salpeter-like IMF, and other galaxies have a super-Salpeter IMF in the center, decreasing to a sub-Salpeter IMF at ~0.5 R_e. We find a global correlation of the central [Z/H] to the central IMF and the radial gradient of the IMF for the eight galaxies, but local correlations of the IMF slope to other stellar population parameters hold only for subsets of the galaxies in our sample. Some elemental abundances also correlate locally with each other within a galaxy, suggesting a common production channel. We present a multi-wavelength photometric and spectroscopic analysis of thirteen "Super-Chandrasekhar Mass"/2003fg-like type Ia Supernova (SNe~Ia). Nine of these objects were observed by the Carnegie Supernova Project. 2003fg-like have slowly declining light curves ($\Delta m_{15}$(B) $<$1.3 mag), and peak absolute $B$-band magnitudes between $-19

Recent studies of early-type galaxies have suggested that the initial mass function (IMF) slope is bottom-heavy, i.e. they contain a larger fraction of low-mass stars than the Milky Way. However, measurements of the IMF remain challenging in unresolved galaxies because features in their observed spectra are sensitive to a number of factors including the stellar age, metallicity, and elemental abundances, in addition to the IMF. In this paper, we use new high signal-to-noise IMACS (Magellan) spectra to study the elliptical shell galaxy NGC 3923 at optical (3700-6600 Angstrom), and near-infrared (7900-8500 Angstrom) wavelengths, as a function of radius. We have undertaken a number of independent approaches to better understand the uncertainties in our results. 1) We compare two different stellar population model libraries; 2) we undertake spectral index fitting as well as full spectral fitting; 3) we have performed simulations for which we a priori know the input IMF, and which closely match our data; 4) we also investigate the effects of including a two-component, rather than a single stellar population. We show that our results are sensitive to the assumptions we make and to the methods we use. In addition, we evaluate the accuracy and precision of our results based on simulated mock data. We find some indication (although assumption-dependent) for a bottom-heavy IMF in the mass-range 0.5-1.0 M_sun, while the IMF in the mass-range 0.08-0.5 M_sun appears to be Milky-Way like and constant. As of today, we have directly detected exactly one source in both gravitational waves (GWs) and electromagnetic (EM) radiation, the binary neutron star merger GW170817, its associated gamma-ray burst GRB170817A, and the subsequent kilonova SSS17a/AT 2017gfo. Within ten years, we will detect hundreds of events, including new classes of events such as neutron-star-black-hole mergers, core-collapse supernovae, and almost certainly something completely unexpected. As we build this sample, we will explore exotic astrophysical topics ranging from nucleosynthesis, stellar evolution, general relativity, high-energy astrophysics, nuclear matter, to cosmology. The discovery potential is extraordinary, and investments in this area will yield major scientific breakthroughs. We provide homogeneous optical (UBVRI) and near-infrared (JHK) time series photometry for 254 cluster (omega Cen, M4) and field RR Lyrae (RRL) variables. We ended up with more than 551,000 measurements. For 94 fundamental (RRab) and 51 first overtones (RRc) we provide a complete optical/NIR characterization (mean magnitudes, luminosity amplitudes, epoch of the anchor point). The NIR light curves of these variables were adopted to provide new and accurate light-curve templates for both RRc (single period bin) and RRab (three period bins) variables. The templates for the J and the H band are newly introduced, together with the use of the pulsation period to discriminate among the different RRab templates. To overcome subtle uncertainties in the fit of secondary features of the light curves we provide two independent sets of analytical functions (Fourier series, Periodic Gaussian functions). The new templates were validated by using 26 omega Cen and Bulge RRLs covering the four period bins. We found that the difference between the measured mean magnitude along the light curve and the mean magnitude estimated by using the template on a single randomly extracted phase point is better than 0.01 mag (sigma=0.04 mag). We also validated the template on variables for which at least three phase points were available, but without information on the phase of the anchor point. The accuracy of the mean magnitudes is ~0.01 mag (sigma=0.04 mag). The new templates were applied to the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) globular Reticulum and by using literature data and predicted PLZ relations we found true distance moduli of 18.47+-0.10+-0.03 mag (J) and 18.49+-0.09+-0.05 mag (K). We also used literature optical and mid-infrared data and we found a mean true distance modulus of 18.47+-0.02+-0.06 mag, suggesting that Reticulum is ~1 kpc closer than the LMC., Comment: Submitted to A&A

We developed a new approach to provide accurate estimates of metal content, reddening and true distance modulus of RR Lyrae stars (RRLs). The method is based on homogeneous optical ($BVI$) and near-infrared ($JHK$) mean magnitudes and on predicted period--luminosity--metallicity relations ($IJHK$) and absolute mean magnitude--metallicity relations ($BV$). We obtained solutions for three different RRL samples in $\omega$ Cen: first overtone (RRc,~90), fundamental (RRab,~80) and global (RRc+RRab) in which the period of first overtones were fundamentalized. The metallicity distribution shows a well defined peak at [Fe/H]$\sim$--1.98 and a standard deviation of $\sigma$=0.54 dex. The spread is, as expected, metal-poor ([Fe/H]$\le$--2.3) objects. The current metallicity distribution is $\sim$0.3 dex more metal-poor than similar estimates for RRLs available in the literature. The difference vanishes if the true distance modulus we estimated is offset by --0.06/--0.07~mag in true distance modulus. We also found a cluster true distance modulus of $\mu$=13.720$\pm$0.002$\pm$0.030~mag, where the former error is the error on the mean and the latter is the standard deviation. Moreover, we found a cluster reddening of E($B-V$)=0.132$\pm$0.002$\pm$0.028~mag and spatial variations of the order of a few arcmin across the body of the cluster. Both the true distance modulus and the reddening are slightly larger than similar estimates available in the literature, but the difference is within 1$\sigma$. The metallicity dependence of distance diagnostics agree with theory and observations, but firm constraints require accurate and homogeneous spectroscopic measurements.

We present a new complete Near-Infrared (NIR, $JHK_s$) census of RR Lyrae stars (RRLs) in the globular $\omega$ Cen (NGC 5139). We collected 15,472 $JHK_s$ images with 4-8m class telescopes over 15 years (2000-2015) covering a sky area around the cluster center of 60x34 arcmin$^2$. These images provided calibrated photometry for 182 out of the 198 cluster RRL candidates with ten to sixty measurements per band. We also provide new homogeneous estimates of the photometric amplitude for 180 ($J$), 176 ($H$) and 174 ($K_s$) RRLs. These data were supplemented with single-epoch $JK_s$ magnitudes from VHS and with single-epoch $H$ magnitudes from 2MASS. Using proprietary optical and NIR data together with new optical light curves (ASAS-SN) we also updated pulsation periods for 59 candidate RRLs. As a whole, we provide $JHK_s$ magnitudes for 90 RRab (fundamentals), 103 RRc (first overtones) and one RRd (mixed--mode pulsator). We found that NIR/optical photometric amplitude ratios increase when moving from first overtone to fundamental and to long-period (P>0.7 days) fundamental RRLs. Using predicted Period-Luminosity-Metallicity relations, we derive a true distance modulus of 13.674$\pm$0.008$\pm$0.038 mag (statistical error and standard deviation of the median)---based on spectroscopic iron abundances---and of 13.698$\pm$0.004$\pm$0.048 mag---based on photometric iron abundances. The first phase of the Carnegie Supernova Project (CSP-I) was a dedicated supernova follow-up program based at the Las Campanas Observatory that collected science data of young, low-redshift supernovae between 2004 and 2009. Presented in this paper is the CSP-I photometric data release of low-redshift stripped-envelope core-collapse supernovae. The data consist of optical (uBgVri) photometry of 34 objects, with a subset of 26 having near-infrared (YJH) photometry. Twenty objects have optical pre-maximum coverage with a subset of 12 beginning at least five days prior to the epoch of B-band maximum brightness. In the near-infrared, 17 objects have pre-maximum observations with a subset of 14 beginning at least five days prior to the epoch of J-band maximum brightness. Analysis of this photometric data release is presented in companion papers focusing on techniques to estimate host-galaxy extinction (Stritzinger et al., submitted) and the light-curve and progenitor star properties of the sample (Taddia et al., submitted). New accurate and homogeneous optical UBVRI photometry has been obtained for variable stars in the Galactic globular $\omega$ Cen (NGC 5139). We secured 8202 CCD images covering a time interval of 24 years and a sky area of 84x48 arcmin. The current data were complemented with data available in the literature and provided new, homogeneous pulsation parameters (mean magnitudes, luminosity amplitudes,periods) for 187 candidate $\omega$ Cen RR Lyrae (RRLs). Among them we have 101 RRc (first overtone), 85 RRab (fundamental) and a single candidate RRd (double-mode) variables. Candidate Blazhko RRLs show periods and colors that are intermediate between RRc and RRab variables, suggesting that they are transitional objects. The comparison of the period distribution and of the Bailey diagram indicates that RRLs in $\omega$ Cen show a long-period tail not present in typical Oosterhoff II (OoII) globulars. The RRLs in dwarf spheroidals and in ultra faint dwarfs have properties between Oosterhoff intermediate and OoII clusters. Metallicity plays a key role in shaping the above evidence. These findings do not support the hypothesis that $\omega$ Cen is the core remnant of a spoiled dwarf galaxy. Using optical Period-Wesenheit relations that are reddening-free and minimally dependent on metallicity we find a mean distance to $\omega$ Cen of 13.71$\pm$0.08$\pm$0.01 mag (semi-empirical and theoretical calibrations). Finally, we invert the I-band Period-Luminosity-Metallicity relation to estimate individual RRLs metal abundances. The metallicity distribution agrees quite well with spectroscopic and photometric metallicity estimates available in the literature., Comment: AJ, accepted

We present a Hubble diagram of type II supernovae using corrected magnitudes derived only from photometry, with no input of spectral information. We use a data set from the Carnegie Supernovae Project I (CSP) for which optical and near-infrared light-curves were obtained. The apparent magnitude is corrected by two observables, one corresponding to the slope of the plateau in the $V$ band and the second a colour term. We obtain a dispersion of 0.44 mag using a combination of the $(V-i)$ colour and the $r$ band and we are able to reduce the dispersion to 0.39 mag using our golden sample. A comparison of our photometric colour method (PCM) with the standardised candle method (SCM) is also performed. The dispersion obtained for the SCM (which uses both photometric and spectroscopic information) is 0.29 mag which compares with 0.43 mag from the PCM, for the same SN sample. The construction of a photometric Hubble diagram is of high importance in the coming era of large photometric wide-field surveys, which will increase the detection rate of supernovae by orders of magnitude. Such numbers will prohibit spectroscopic follow-up in the vast majority of cases, and hence methods must be deployed which can proceed using solely photometric data., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

New mid-infrared period-luminosity (PL) relations are presented for \rrl{} variables in the globular cluster M4 (NGC 6121). Accurate photometry was obtained for 37 \rrl{} variables using observations from the Infrared Array Camera onboard the Spitzer Space Telescope. The dispersion of M4's PL relations is 0.056, and the uncertainty in the slope is 0.11 mag. Additionally, weestablished calibrated PL relations at 3.6 and 4.5~\micron{} using published Hubble Space Telescopegeometric parallaxes of five Galactic \rrl{} stars. The resulting band-averaged distance modulus for M4 is $ \mu = 11.399 \pm 0.007 \textrm{(stat)} \pm 0.080 \textrm{(syst)} \pm 0.015 \textrm{(cal)} \pm 0.020 \textrm{(ext)}$. The systematic uncertainty will be greatly reduced when parallaxes of more stars become available from the GAIA mission. Optical and infrared period-color (PC) relations are also presented, and the lack of a MIR PC relation suggests that \rrl{} stars are not affected by CO absorptionin the 4.5~\micron{} band., Comment: 11 figures, 5 tables

We present near-infrared (NIR) time-series spectroscopy, as well as complementary ultraviolet (UV), optical, and NIR data, of the Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) iPTF13ebh, which was discovered within two days from the estimated time of explosion. The first NIR spectrum was taken merely 2.3 days after explosion and may be the earliest NIR spectrum yet obtained of a SN Ia. The most striking features in the spectrum are several NIR C I lines, and the C I {\lambda}1.0693 {\mu}m line is the strongest ever observed in a SN Ia. Interestingly, no strong optical C II counterparts were found, even though the optical spectroscopic time series began early and is densely-cadenced. Except at the very early epochs, within a few days from the time of explosion, we show that the strong NIR C I compared to the weaker optical C II appears to be general in SNe Ia. iPTF13ebh is a fast decliner with {\Delta}m15(B) = 1.79 $\pm$ 0.01, and its absolute magnitude obeys the linear part of the width-luminosity relation. It is therefore categorized as a "transitional" event, on the fast-declining end of normal SNe Ia as opposed to subluminous/91bg-like objects. iPTF13ebh shows NIR spectroscopic properties that are distinct from both the normal and subluminous/91bg-like classes, bridging the observed characteristics of the two classes. These NIR observations suggest composition and density of the inner core similar to that of 91bg-like events, and a deep reaching carbon burning layer not observed in slower declining SNe Ia. There is also a substantial difference between the explosion times inferred from the early-time light curve and the velocity evolution of the Si II {\lambda}0.6355 {\mu}m line, implying a long dark phase of ~ 4 days., Comment: Accepted for Publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics. 17 figures and 19 pages

In classical P-Cygni profiles, theory predicts emission to peak at zero rest velocity. However, supernova spectra exhibit emission that is generally blue shifted. While this characteristic has been reported in many supernovae, it is rarely discussed in any detail. Here we present an analysis of H-alpha emission-peaks using a dataset of 95 type II supernovae, quantifying their strength and time evolution. Using a post-explosion time of 30d, we observe a systematic blueshift of H-alpha emission, with a mean value of -2000 kms-1. This offset is greatest at early times but vanishes as supernovae become nebular. Simulations of Dessart et al. (2013) match the observed behaviour, reproducing both its strength and evolution in time. Such blueshifts are a fundamental feature of supernova spectra as they are intimately tied to the density distribution of ejecta, which falls more rapidly than in stellar winds. This steeper density structure causes line emission/absorption to be much more confined; it also exacerbates the occultation of the receding part of the ejecta, biasing line emission to the blue for a distant observer. We conclude that blue-shifted emission-peak offsets of several thousand kms-1 are a generic property of observations, confirmed by models, of photospheric-phase type II supernovae., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 10 pages, 9 figures

We explore a method for metallicity determinations based on quantitative spectroscopy of type II-Plateau (II-P) supernovae (SNe). For consistency, we first evolve a set of 15Msun main sequence stars at 0.1, 0.4, 1, and 2 x the solar metallicity. At the onset of core collapse, we trigger a piston-driven explosion and model the resulting ejecta and radiation. Our theoretical models of such red-supergiant-star explosions at different metallicity show that synthetic spectra of SNe II-P possess optical signatures during the recombination phase that are sensitive to metallicity variations. This sensitivity can be quantified and the metallicity inferred from the strength of metal-line absorptions. Furthermore, these signatures are not limited to O, but also include Na, Ca, Sc, Ti, or Fe. When compared to a sample of SNe II-P from the Carnegie SN Project and previous SN followup programs, we find that most events lie at a metallicity between 0.4 and 2 x solar, with a marked scarcity of SN II-P events at SMC metallicity. This most likely reflects the paucity of low metallicity star forming regions in the local Universe. SNe II-P have high plateau luminosities that make them observable spectroscopically at large distances. Because they exhibit signatures of diverse metal species, in the future they may offer a means to constrain the evolution of the composition (e.g., the O/Fe ratio) in the Universe out to a redshift of one and beyond., Comment: accepted to MNRAS

A novel method of analysis of double-lined eclipsing binaries containing a radially pulsating star is presented. The combined pulsating-eclipsing light curve is built up from a purely eclipsing light curve grid created using an existing modeling tool. For every pulsation phase the instantaneous radius and surface brightness are taken into account, being calculated from the disentangled radial velocity curve of the pulsating star and from its out-of-eclipse pulsational light curve and the light ratio of the components, respectively. The best model is found using the Markov Chain Monte Carlo method. The method is applied to the eclipsing binary Cepheid OGLE-LMC-CEP-0227 (P_puls = 3.80 d, P_orb = 309 d). We analyze a set of new spectroscopic and photometric observations for this binary, simultaneously fitting OGLE V-band, I-band and Spitzer 3.6 {\mu}m photometry. We derive a set of fundamental parameters of the system significantly improving the precision comparing to the previous results obtained by our group. The Cepheid mass and radius are M_1 = 4.165 +/- 0.032 M_solar and R_1 = 34.92 +/- 0.34 R_solar, respectively. For the first time a direct, geometrical and distance-independent determination of the Cepheid projection factor is presented. The value p = 1.21 +/- 0.03(stat.) +/- 0.04(syst.) is consistent with theoretical expectations for a short period Cepheid and interferometric measurements for {\delta} Cep. We also find a very high value of the optical limb darkening coefficients for the Cepheid component, in strong disagreement with theoretical predictions for static atmospheres at a given surface temperature and gravity., Comment: 16 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The observational diversity displayed by various Type IIn supernovae (SNe IIn) is explored and quantified. In doing so, a more coherent picture ascribing the variety of observed SNe IIn types to particular progenitor scenarios is sought. Carnegie Supernova Project (CSP) optical and near-infrared light curves and visual-wavelength spectroscopy of the Type IIn SNe 2005kj, 2006aa, 2006bo, 2006qq, and 2008fq are presented. Combined with previously published observations of the Type IIn SNe 2005ip and 2006jd, the full CSP sample is used to derive physical parameters that describe the nature of the interaction between the expanding SN ejecta and the circumstellar material (CSM). For each SN of our sample, we find counterparts, identifying objects similar to SNe 1994W (SN 2006bo), 1998S (SN 2008fq), and 1988Z (SN 2006qq). We present the unprecedented initial $u$-band plateau of SN 2006aa, and its peculiar late-time luminosity and temperature evolution. For each SN, mass-loss rates of 10$^{-4}-10^{-2}$ $M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ are derived, assuming the CSM was formed by steady winds. Typically wind velocities of a few hundred km s$^{-1}$ are also computed. The CSP SN IIn sample seems to be divided into subcategories rather than to have exhibited a continuum of observational properties. The wind and mass-loss parameters would favor a luminous blue variable progenitor scenario. However the assumptions made to derive those parameters strongly influence the results, and therefore, other progenitor channels behind SNe IIn cannot be excluded at this time., Comment: 41 pages, 19 figures, replaced to match the published version

We present ten medium-resolution, high signal-to-noise ratio near-infrared (NIR) spectra of SN 2011fe from SpeX on the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF) and Gemini Near-Infrared Spectrograph (GNIRS) on Gemini North, obtained as part of the Carnegie Supernova Project. This data set constitutes the earliest time-series NIR spectroscopy of a Type Ia supernova (SN Ia), with the first spectrum obtained at 2.58 days past the explosion and covering -14.6 to +17.3 days relative to B-band maximum. C I {\lambda}1.0693 {\mu}m is detected in SN 2011fe with increasing strength up to maximum light. The delay in the onset of the NIR C I line demonstrates its potential to be an effective tracer of unprocessed material. For the first time in a SN Ia, the early rapid decline of the Mg II {\lambda}1.0927 {\mu}m velocity was observed, and the subsequent velocity is remarkably constant. The Mg II velocity during this constant phase locates the inner edge of carbon burning and probes the conditions under which the transition from deflagration to detonation occurs. We show that the Mg II velocity does not correlate with the optical light-curve decline rate {\Delta}m15. The prominent break at ~1.5 {\mu}m is the main source of concern for NIR k-correction calculations. We demonstrate here that the feature has a uniform time evolution among SNe Ia, with the flux ratio across the break strongly correlated with {\Delta}m15. The predictability of the strength and the onset of this feature suggests that the associated k-correction uncertainties can be minimized with improved spectral templates., Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We describe observed properties of the Type Iax class of supernovae (SNe Iax), consisting of SNe observationally similar to its prototypical member, SN 2002cx. The class currently has 25 members, and we present optical photometry and/or optical spectroscopy for most of them. SNe Iax are spectroscopically similar to SNe Ia, but have lower maximum-light velocities (2000 < |v| < 8000 km/s), typically lower peak magnitudes (-14.2 > M_V,peak > -18.9 mag), and most have hot photospheres. Relative to SNe Ia, SNe Iax have low luminosities for their light-curve shape. There is a correlation between luminosity and light-curve shape, similar to that of SNe Ia, but offset from that of SNe Ia and with larger scatter. Despite a host-galaxy morphology distribution that is highly skewed to late-type galaxies without any SNe Iax discovered in elliptical galaxies, there are several indications that the progenitor stars are white dwarfs (WDs): evidence of C/O burning in their maximum-light spectra, low ejecta masses, strong Fe lines in their late-time spectra, a lack of X-ray detections, and deep limits on massive stars and star formation at the SN sites. However, two SNe Iax show strong He lines in their spectra. The progenitor system and explosion model that best fits all of the data is a binary system of a C/O WD that accretes matter from a He star and has a significant deflagration. At least some of the time, this explosion will not disrupt the WD. We estimate that in a given volume there are 31^+17_-13 SNe Iax for every 100 SNe Ia, and for every 1 M_sun of iron generated by SNe Ia at z = 0, SNe Iax generate 0.052^+0.017_-0.014 M_sun. Being the largest class of peculiar SNe, thousands of SNe Iax will be discovered by LSST. We provide additional observational evidence that some Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) show signatures of circumstellar interaction (CSI) with hydrogen-rich material. Early phase optical and near-infrared (NIR) light curves and spectroscopy of SN 2008J obtained by the Carnegie Supernova Project are studied and compared to those of SNe 2002ic and 2005gj. Our NIR spectrum is the first obtained for a 2002ic-like object extending up to 2.2 $\mu$m. A published high-resolution spectrum is used to provide insight on the circumstellar material (CSM). SN 2008J is found to be affected by $A_V\sim$ 1.9 mag of extinction and to closely resemble SN 2002ic. Spectral and color comparison to SNe 2002ic and 2005gj suggests $R_V$ $<$ 3.1. Spectral decomposition reveals the underlying SN emission matches a 1991T-like event and, since SN 2008J is as luminous as SN 2005gj ($V_{\rm max}$ $=$ $-$20.3 mag), we conclude that their CSI emissions are similarly robust. The high-resolution spectrum reveals narrow emission lines produced from un-shocked gas characterized by a wind velocity of $\sim$ 50 km s$^{-1}$. We report the outcome of a 3-day workshop on the Hubble constant (H_0) that took place during February 6-8 2012 at the Kavli Institute for Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology, on the campus of Stanford University. The participants met to address the following questions. Are there compelling scientific reasons to obtain more precise and more accurate measurements of H_0 than currently available? If there are, how can we achieve this goal? The answers that emerged from the workshop are (1) better measurements of H_0 provide critical independent constraints on dark energy, spatial curvature of the Universe, neutrino physics, and validity of general relativity, (2) a measurement of H_0 to 1% in both precision and accuracy, supported by rigorous error budgets, is within reach for several methods, and (3) multiple paths to independent determinations of H_0 are needed in order to access and control systematics., Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, communique of workshop on the Hubble constant at KIPAC during February 6-8 2012

(Abridged) The presence of unburned material in the ejecta of normal Type Ia supernovae (SNeIa) is investigated using early-time spectroscopy obtained by the CSP. The tell-tale signature of pristine material from a C+O white dwarf progenitor star is the presence of carbon. The most prominent carbon lines in optical spectra of SNeIa are due to C II. We find that at least 30% of the objects in the sample show an absorption at ~6300 AA which is attributed to C II 6580. An association to H_alpha is considered to be unlikely. These findings imply a larger incidence of carbon in SNeIa ejecta than previously noted. We show how observational biases and physical conditions may hide these C II lines, and account for the scarcity of previous carbon detections. This relatively large frequency of carbon detections has crucial implications on our understanding of the explosive process. The observations indicate that carbon is present merely ~1000 km s^-1 above the bulk of Si II. Spectral modeling shows the detections are consistent with a mass of carbon of 10^-3--10^-2 M_sun. This would imply substantial mixing, which may be related to asymmetries of the flame propagation or clumps of unburned material along the line of sight. However, the uniformity of the relation between C II and Si II velocities is not consistent with the latter scenario. The observational properties of SNeIa with and without carbon signatures are compared. We present the analysis of the first set of low-redshift Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) by the Carnegie Supernova Project. Well-sampled, high-precision optical (ugriBV) and near-infrared (NIR; YJHKs) light curves obtained in a well-understood photometric system are used to provide light-curve parameters, and ugriBVYJH template light curves. The intrinsic colors at maximum light are calibrated to compute optical--NIR color excesses for the full sample, thus allowing the properties of the reddening law in the host galaxies to be studied. A low value of Rv~1.7, is derived when using the entire sample of SNe. However, when the two highly reddened SNe in the sample are excluded, a value Galactic standard of Rv~3.2 is obtained. The colors of these two events are well matched by a reddening model due to circumstellar dust. The peak luminosities are calibrated using a two-parameter linear fit to the decline rates and the colors, or alternatively, the color excesses. In both cases, dispersions in absolute magnitude of 0.12--0.16 mag are obtained, depending on the filter-color combination. In contrast to the results obtained from color excesses, these fits give Rv~1--2, even when the two highly reddened SNe are excluded. This discrepancy suggests that, beyond the "normal" interstellar reddening produced in the host galaxies, there is an intrinsic dispersion in the colors of SNe Ia which is correlated with luminosity but independent of the decline rate. Finally, a Hubble diagram is produced by combining the results of the fits for each filter. The resulting scatter of 0.12 mag appears to be limited by peculiar velocities as evidenced by the strong correlation between the distance-modulus residuals among the different filters. The Carnegie Supernova Project (CSP) is a five-year survey being carried out at the Las Campanas Observatory to obtain high-quality light curves of ~100 low-redshift Type Ia supernovae in a well-defined photometric system. Here we present the first release of photometric data that contains the optical light curves of 35 Type Ia supernovae, and near-infrared light curves for a subset of 25 events. The data comprise 5559 optical (ugriBV) and 1043 near-infrared (YJHKs) data points in the natural system of the Swope telescope. Twenty-eight supernovae have pre-maximum data, and for 15 of these, the observations begin at least 5 days before B maximum. This is one of the most accurate datasets of low-redshift Type Ia supernovae published to date. When completed, the CSP dataset will constitute a fundamental reference for precise determinations of cosmological parameters, and serve as a rich resource for comparison with models of Type Ia supernovae., Comment: 93 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in AJ

We observed two fields near M32 with the ACS/HRC on board the Hubble Space Telescope, located at distances of about 1.8' and 5.4' (hereafter F1 and F2, respectively) from the center of M32. To obtain a very detailed and deep color-magnitude diagram (CMD) and to look for short period variability, we obtained time-series imaging of each field in 32-orbit-long exposures using the F435W (B) and F555W (V) filters, spanning a temporal range of 2 days per filter. We focus on our detection of variability on RR Lyrae variable stars, which represents the only way to obtain information about the presence of a very old population (larger than 10 Gyr) in M32 from optical data. Optical and near-infrared photometry and optical spectroscopy are reported for SN 2003bg, starting a few days after explosion and extending for a period of more than 300 days. Our early-time spectra reveal the presence of broad, high-velocity Balmer lines. The nebular-phase spectra, on the other hand, show a remarkable resemblance to those of Type Ib/c supernovae, without clear evidence for hydrogen. Near maximum brightness SN 2003bg displayed a bolometric luminosity comparable to that of other Type I hypernovae unrelated to gamma-ray bursts, implying a rather normal amount of 56Ni production (0.1-0.2 Msun) compared with other such objects. The bolometric light curve of SN 2003bg, on the other hand, is remarkably broad, thus suggesting a relatively large progenitor mass at the moment of explosion. These observations, together with the large value of the kinetic energy of expansion established in the accompanying paper (Mazzali et al. 2009), suggest that SN 2003bg can be regarded as a Type IIb hypernova., Comment: 41 pages, 12 figures, accepted by The Astrophysical Journal

Optical observations of the Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) 2005bl in NGC 4070, obtained from -6 to +66 d with respect to the B-band maximum, are presented. The photometric evolution is characterised by rapidly-declining light curves and red colours at peak and soon thereafter. With M_B,max = -17.24 the SN is an underluminous SN Ia, similar to the peculiar SNe 1991bg and 1999by. This similarity also holds for the spectroscopic appearance, the only remarkable difference being the likely presence of carbon in pre-maximum spectra of SN 2005bl. A comparison study among underluminous SNe Ia is performed, based on a number of spectrophotometric parameters. Previously reported correlations of the light-curve decline rate with peak luminosity and R(Si) are confirmed, and a large range of post-maximum Si II lambda6355 velocity gradients is encountered. 1D synthetic spectra for SN 2005bl are presented, which confirm the presence of carbon and suggest an overall low burning efficiency with a significant amount of leftover unburned material. Also, the Fe content in pre-maximum spectra is very low, which may point to a low metallicity of the precursor. We present extensive ugrizYHJK photometry and optical spectroscopy of SN 2005gj obtained by the SDSS-II and CSP Supernova Projects, which give excellent coverage during the first 150 days after the time of explosion. These data show that SN 2005gj is the second clear case, after SN 2002ic, of a thermonuclear explosion in a dense circumstellar environment. Both the presence of singly and doubly ionized iron-peak elements (FeIII and weak SII, SiII) near maximum light as well as the spectral evolution show that SN 2002ic-like events are Type Ia explosions. Independent evidence comes from the exponential decay in luminosity of SN 2005gj, pointing to an exponential density distribution of the ejecta. The interaction of the supernova ejecta with the dense circumstellar medium is stronger than in SN 2002ic: (1) the supernova lines are weaker; (2) the Balmer emission lines are more luminous; and (3) the bolometric luminosity is higher close to maximum light. The velocity evolution of the Halpha components suggest that the CSM around SN 2005gj is clumpy and it has a flatter density distribution compared with the steady wind solution, in agreement with SN 2002ic. An early X-ray observation with Chandra gives an upper-limit on the mass loss rate from the companion of < 2x10^{-4} Msun/yr., Comment: 63 pages, 16 figures, submitted to AJ

We present extensive u'g'r'i'BVRIYJHKs photometry and optical spectroscopy of SN 2005hk. These data reveal that SN 2005hk was nearly identical in its observed properties to SN 2002cx, which has been called ``the most peculiar known type Ia supernova.'' Both supernovae exhibited high ionization SN 1991T-like pre-maximum spectra, yet low peak luminosities like SN 1991bg. The spectra reveal that SN 2005hk, like SN 2002cx, exhibited expansion velocities that were roughly half those of typical type Ia supernovae. The R and I light curves of both supernovae were also peculiar in not displaying the secondary maximum observed for normal type Ia supernovae. Our YJH photometry of SN 2005hk reveals the same peculiarity in the near-infrared. By combining our optical and near-infrared photometry of SN 2005hk with published ultraviolet light curves obtained with the Swift satellite, we are able to construct a bolometric light curve from ~10 days before to ~60 days after B maximum. The shape and unusually low peak luminosity of this light curve, plus the low expansion velocities and absence of a secondary maximum at red and near-infrared wavelengths, are all in reasonable agreement with model calculations of a 3D deflagration which produces ~0.25 M_sun of 56Ni., Comment: Accepted by PASP, to appear in April 2007 issue, 63 pages, 16 figures, 11 tables

We present 39 nights of optical photometry, 34 nights of infrared photometry, and 4 nights of optical spectroscopy of the Type Ia SN 1999ac. This supernova was discovered two weeks before maximum light, and observations were begun shortly thereafter. At early times its spectra resembled the unusual SN 1999aa and were characterized by very high velocities in the Ca II H and K lines, but very low velocities in the Si II 6355 A line. The optical photometry showed a slow rise to peak brightness but, quite peculiarly, was followed by a more rapid decline from maximum. Thus, the B- and V-band light curves cannot be characterized by a single stretch factor. We argue that the best measure of the nature of this object is not the decline rate parameter Delta m_15 (B). The B-V colors were unusual from 30 to 90 days after maximum light in that they evolved to bluer values at a much slower rate than normal Type Ia supernovae. The spectra and bolometric light curve indicate that this event was similar to the spectroscopically peculiar slow decliner SN 1999aa., Comment: 42 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journal (January 28, 2006)

We present u'g'r'i'BV photometry and optical spectroscopy of the Type Ib/Ic SN 2005bf covering the first ~100 days following discovery. The u'g'BV light curves displayed a double-peaked morphology, which is among Type Ib/Ic supernovae. The bolometric light curve indicates that SN 2005bf was a remarkably luminous event. Spectroscopically, SN 2005bf underwent a unique transformation from a Type Ic-like event at early times to a typical Type Ib supernova at later phases. The initial maximum in u'g'BV was accompanied by the presence in the spectrum of high velocity absorption lines of Fe II, Ca II, and H I. The photospheric velocity derived from spectra at early epochs was unusually low compared with ordinary Type Ib supernovae. We describe one-dimensional computer simulations which attempt to account for these remarkable properties. The most favored model is that of a very energetic (2 x 10^{51} erg), asymmetric explosion of a massive (8.3 M_sun) Wolf-Rayet WN star that had lost most of its hydrogen envelope. We speculate that an unobserved relativistic jet was launched producing a two-component explosion consisting of 1) a polar explosion containing a small fraction of the total mass and moving at high velocity, and 2) the explosion of the rest of the star. At first, only the polar explosion is observed, producing the initial maximum and the high velocity absorption-line spectrum resembling a Type Ic event. At late times, this fast-moving component becomes optically-thin, revealing the slower-moving explosion of the rest of the star and transforming the observed spectrum to that of a typical Type Ib supernova. If this scenario is correct, then SN 2005bf is the best example to date of a transition object between normal Type Ib/Ic supernovae and gamma ray bursts., Comment: Accepted ApJ on 15 December 2005, 37 pages, 11 figures; minor changes after refereeing process

We correct errors in Bernstein, Freedman & Madore (2002abc), a series of papers in which we described observations of the optical extragalactic background light (EBL). These errors pertain to the measurement of zodiacal light, given in the second paper of this series. Making these corrections leads to a net decrease of 0.5($\pm$0.6)% in our zodiacal light measurement and a corresponding increase in the inferred extragalactic background light of roughly $0.5 (\pm 0.6) \times 10^{-9}$ ergs sec$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ sr$^{-1}$ \AA$^{-1}$. For comparison, the originally--quoted EBL flux at 5500\AA was $2.7 (\pm1.4) \times 10^{-9}$ in the same units ($1\sigma$ combined systematic and statistical uncertainty). We provide a detailed discussion of these errors and also discuss the evolution of this work prior to the (2002) papers. We note that corrections of the factual errors in our (2002) papers yield a result that is consistent with the results and errors quoted there. However, this is not intended to be a new or updated analysis, and it does not address some methodological objections which have been raised to our prior work., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present optical and near-infrared searches for afterglow emission from the first four Swift bursts with accurate positions from the X-ray Telescope (XRT). Using telescopes at Las Campanas, Keck, and Palomar observatories we rapidly identified and followed up afterglows for three of the four bursts. The burst positions were also observed with the Very Large Array, but no radio afterglow emission was detected. The optical/NIR afterglows are fainter than about 75% of all afterglows detected to date, with GRB 050126 being the faintest, and were identified thanks to accurate and rapid positions from the XRT and rapid response with >1-m telescopes. This suggests that the fraction of dust-obscured bursts is small, <10% when combined with afterglows localized by the HETE-2 Soft X-ray Camera. The X-ray fluxes are typical of the known population, with the exception of GRB 050126 which has the faintest X-ray afterglow to date (normalized to t=10 hr), and was detected thanks to a response time of only 130 s after the burst. Finally, we find that all three optical/NIR afterglows are located <2 arcsec away from the nominal XRT positions, suggesting that the XRT is capable of delivering highly accurate positions, which will revolutionize afterglow studies., Comment: Submitted to ApJ; 13 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables

Over the six years since the discovery of the gamma-ray burst GRB 980425, associated with the nearby (distance, ~40 Mpc) supernova 1998bw, astronomers have fiercely debated the nature of this event. Relative to bursts located at cosmological distances, (redshift, z~1), GRB 980425 was under-luminous in gamma-rays by three orders of magnitude. Radio calorimetry showed the explosion was sub-energetic by a factor of 10. Here, we report observations of the radio and X-ray afterglow of the recent z=0.105 GRB 031203 and demonstrate that it too is sub-energetic. Our result, when taken together with the low gamma-ray luminosity, suggest that GRB 031203 is the first cosmic analogue to GRB 980425. We find no evidence that this event was a highly collimated explosion viewed off-axis. Like GRB 980425, GRB 031203 appears to be an intrinsically sub-energetic gamma-ray burst. Such sub-energetic events have faint afterglows. Intensive follow-up of faint bursts with smooth gamma-ray light curves (common to both GRBs 031203 and 980425) may enable us to reveal their expected large population., Comment: To Appear in Nature, August 5, 2004

At z=0.1055, the gamma-ray burst GRB 031203 is one of the two nearest GRBs known. Using observations from the Very Large Array (VLA) and Chandra X-ray Observatory, we derive sub-arcsecond localizations of the radio and X-ray afterglow of this GRB. We present near-infrared observations of the supernova SN 2003lw, which exploded in the host galaxy of the GRB 031203. Our deep, high resolution Magellan/PANIC data establish that this SN is spatially coincident with the radio and X-ray localizations of the afterglow of GRB 031203 to sub-arcsecond precision, and is thus firmly associated with the GRB. We use image differencing to subtract the bright emission from the host galaxy, and measure the time evolution of the SN between ~5 and ~50 days after the GRB. The resulting light curve has a shape which is quite different from that of the two SNe previously associated with GRBs, SN 1998bw and SN 2003dh. With SN 2003lw securely associated with this burst, we confirm that all three GRBs with redshifts z<0.3 were accompanied by SN explosions., Comment: Submitted to ApJL. We present the results of a search for variable stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Phoenix. Nineteen Cepheids, six candidate long-period variables, one candidate eclipsing binary and a large number of candidate RR Lyrae stars have been identified. Periods and light curves have been obtained for all the Cepheid variables. Their distribution in the period-luminosity diagram reveals that both Anomalous Cepheids (AC) and short-period Classical Cepheids s-pCC are found in our sample. This is the first time that both types of variable star are identified in the same system even though they likely coexist, but have gone unnoticed so far, in other low-metallicity galaxies like Leo A and Sextans A. We argue that the conditions for the existence of both types of variable star in the same galaxy are a low metallicity at all ages, and the presence of both young and intermediate-age (or old, depending on the nature of AC) stars. The RR Lyrae candidates trace, together with the well developed horizontal branch, the existence of an important old population in Phoenix. The different spatial distributions of s-pCC, AC and RR Lyrae variables in the Phoenix field are consistent with the stellar population gradients found in Phoenix, in the sense that the younger population is concentrated in the central part of the galaxy. The gradients in the distribution of the young population within the central part of Phoenix, which seem to indicate a propagation of the recent star formation, are also reflected in the spatial distribution of the s-pCC., Comment: 44 pages, 11 figures, 5 tables. This paper provides a progress report on a collaborative program at the Las Campanas and Cerro Tololo Observatories to observe the near-IR light curves of Type Ia supernovae. We discuss how the morphologies of the JHK light curves change as a function of the decline rate. Evidence is presented which indicates that the absolute magnitudes in the H band have little or no dependence on the decline rate, suggesting that SNe Ia may be nearly perfect cosmological standard candles in the near-IR. A preliminary Hubble diagram in the H band is presented and compared with a similar diagram in V for the same objects. We present a measurement of the absolute surface brightness of the zodiacal light (3900-5100A) toward a fixed extragalactic target at high ecliptic latitude based on moderate resolution (~1.3A per pixel) spectrophotometry obtained with the du Pont 2.5m telescope at Las Campanas Observatory in Chile. This measurement and contemporaneous Hubble Space Telescope data from WFPC2 and FOS comprise a coordinated program to measure the mean flux of the diffuse extragalactic background light (EBL). The zodiacal light at optical wavelengths results from scattering by interplanetary dust, so that the zodiacal light flux toward any extragalactic target varies seasonally with the position of the Earth. This measurement of zodiacal light is therefore relevant to the specific observations (date and target field) under discussion. To obtain this result, we have developed a technique that uses the strength of the zodiacal Fraunhofer lines to identify the absolute flux of the zodiacal light in the multiple-component night sky spectrum. Statistical uncertainties in the result are 0.6% (1 sigma). However, the dominant source of uncertainty is systematic errors, which we estimate to be 1.1% (1 sigma). We discuss the contributions included in this estimate explicitly. (Abridged) We have used HST WFPC2 and ground-based spectroscopy to measure the integrated extragalactic background light (EBL) at optical wavelengths. We have also computed the integrated light from individual galaxy counts in the images used to measure the EBL and in the Hubble Deep Field. We find that the flux in galaxies as measured by standard galaxy photometry methods has generally been underestimated by about 50%. Further, we find that the total flux in individually detected galaxies is a factor of 2 to 3 less than the EBL at 3000--8000A. We show that a significant fraction of the EBL may come from normal galaxies at z<4, which are simply undetectable as a result of K-corrections and cosmological surface brightness dimming. This is consistent with recent redshift surveys at z<4. In the context of some simple models, we discuss the constraints placed by the EBL on the evolution of the luminosity density at z>1. Based on our optical EBL and published UV and IR EBL measurements, we estimate that the total EBL from 0.1--1000 microns is 100+/-20 nW/m^2/sr. If the total EBL were produced entirely by stellar nucleosynthesis, then we estimate that the total baryonic mass processed through stars is Omega_* = 0.0062 (+/- 0.0022) h^{-2}, which corresponds to 0.33+/-0.12 Omega_B for currently favored values of the baryon density. This estimate is smaller by roughly 7% if 7 h_{0.7} nW/m^2/sr of the total EBL comes from accretion onto central black holes. This estimate of Omega_* suggests that the universe has been enriched to a total metal mass of 0.21(+/-0.13) Z_sun Omega_B. (Abridged) We present the first detections of the mean flux of the optical extragalactic background light (EBL) at 3000, 5500, and 8000A. Diffuse foreground flux at these wavelengths comes from terrestrial airglow, dust-scattered sunlight (zodiacal light), and dust-scattered Galactic starlight (diffuse Galactic light). We have avoided the brightest of these, terrestrial airglow, by measuring the absolute surface brightness of the night sky from above the Earth's atmosphere using the Wide Field Planetary Camera2 (WFPC2) and Faint Object Spectrograph (FOS), both aboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). On the ground, we have used the duPont 2.5 m Telescope at Las Campanas Observatory (LCO) to obtain contemporaneous spectrophotometry of ``blank'' sky in the HST field of view to measure and then subtract foreground zodiacal light from the HST observations. We have minimized the diffuse Galactic light in advance by selecting the HST target field along a line of sight with low Galactic dust column density, and then estimated the low--level Galactic foreground using a simple scattering model and the observed correlation between thermal, 100 micron emission and optical scattered flux from the same dust. We report on the discovery of Cepheids in the spiral galaxy NGC 2841, based on observations made with the Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 on board the Hubble Space Telescope. NGC 2841 was observed over 12 epochs using the F555W filter, and over 5 epochs using the F814W filter. Photometry was performed using the DAOPHOT/ALLFRAME package. We discovered a total of 29 variables, including 18 high-quality Cepheids with periods ranging from 15 to 40 days. Period-luminosity relations in the V and I bands, based on the high-quality Cepheids, yield an extinction-corrected distance modulus of 30.74 +/- 0.23 mag, which corresponds to a distance of 14.1 +/- 1.5 Mpc. Our distance is based on an assumed LMC distance modulus of 18.50 +/- 0.10 mag (D = 50+/- 2.5 kpc) and a metallicity dependence of the Cepheid P-L relation of gamma (VI) = -0.2 +/- 0.2 mag/dex., Comment: 31 preprint pages including 10 figures. We present optical and IR spectroscopy of the first two months of evolution of the Type II SN 1999em. We combine these data with high-quality optical/IR photometry beginning only three days after shock breakout, in order to study the performance of the ``Expanding Photosphere Method'' (EPM) in the determination of distances. With this purpose we develop a technique to measure accurate photospheric velocities by cross-correlating observed and model spectra. The application of this technique to SN 1999em shows that we can reach an average uncertainty of 11% in velocity from an individual spectrum. Our analysis shows that EPM is quite robust to the effects of dust. In particular, the distances derived from the VI filters change by only 7% when the adopted visual extinction in the host galaxy is varied by 0.45 mag. The superb time sampling of the BVIZJHK light-curves of SN 1999em permits us to study the internal consistency of EPM and test the dilution factors computed from atmosphere models for Type II plateau supernovae. We find that, in the first week since explosion, the EPM distances are up to 50% lower than the average, possibly due the presence of circumstellar material. Over the following 65 days, on the other hand, our tests lend strong credence to the atmosphere models, and confirm previous claims that EPM can produce consistent distances without having to craft specific models to each supernova. This is particularly true for the VI filters which yield distances with an internal consistency of 4%. From the whole set of BVIZJHK photometry, we obtain an average distance of 7.5+/-0.5 Mpc, where the quoted uncertainty (7%) is a conservative estimate of the internal precision of the method obtained from the analysis of the first 70 days of the supernova evolution., Comment: 68 pages, 15 tables, 22 figures, to appear in ApJ

We present the results of near-infrared observations of extragalactic Cepheids made with the Near Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer on board the Hubble Space Telescope. The variables are located in the galaxies IC 1613, IC 4182, M 31, M 81, M 101, NGC 925, NGC 1365, NGC 2090, NGC 3198, NGC 3621, NGC 4496A and NGC 4536. All fields were observed in the F160W bandpass; additional images were obtained in the F110W and F205W filters. Photometry was performed using the DAOPHOT II/ALLSTAR package. Self-consistent distance moduli and color excesses were obtained by fitting Period-Luminosity relations in the H, I and V bands. Our results support the assumption of a standard reddening law adopted by the HST Key Project on the Extragalactic Distance Scale. We present here the final results of the Hubble Space Telescope Key Project to measure the Hubble constant. We summarize our method, the results and the uncertainties, tabulate our revised distances, and give the implications of these results for cosmology. The analysis presented here benefits from a number of recent improvements and refinements, including (1) a larger LMC Cepheid sample to define the fiducial period-luminosity (PL) relations, (2) a more recent HST Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2) photometric calibration, (3) a correction for Cepheid metallicity, and (4) a correction for incompleteness bias in the observed Cepheid PL samples. New, revised distances are given for the 18 spiral galaxies for which Cepheids have been discovered as part of the Key Project, as well as for 13 additional galaxies with published Cepheid data. The new calibration results in a Cepheid distance to NGC 4258 in better agreement with the maser distance to this galaxy. Based on these revised Cepheid distances, we find values (in km/sec/Mpc) of H0 = 71 +/- 2 (random) +/- 6 (systematic) (type Ia supernovae), 71 +/- 2 +/- 7 (Tully-Fisher relation), 70 +/- 5 +/- 6 (surface brightness fluctuations), 72 +/- 9 +/- 7 (type II supernovae), and 82 +/- 6 +/- 9 (fundamental plane). We combine these results for the different methods with 3 different weighting schemes, and find good agreement and consistency with H0 = 72 +/- 8. We have undertaken an imaging survey of 34 nearby galaxies in far-ultraviolet (FUV, ~1500A) and optical (UBVRI) passbands to characterize galaxy morphology as a function of wavelength. This sample, which includes a range of classical Hubble types from elliptical to irregular with emphasis on spirals at low inclination angle, provides a valuable database for comparison with images of high-z galaxies whose FUV light is redshifted into the optical and near- infrared bands. Ultraviolet data are from the UIT Astro-2 mission. We present images and surface brightness profiles for each galaxy, and we discuss the wavelength-dependence of morphology for different Hubble types in the context of understanding high-z objects. In general, the dominance of young stars in the FUV produces the patchy appearance of a morphological type later than that inferred from optical images. Prominent rings and circumnuclear star formation regions are clearly evident in FUV images of spirals, while bulges, bars, and old, red stellar disks are faint to invisible at these short wavelengths. However, the magnitude of the change in apparent morphology ranges from dramatic in early--type spirals with prominent optical bulges to slight in late-type spirals and irregulars, in which young stars dominate both the UV and optical emission. Starburst galaxies with centrally concentrated, symmetric bursts display an apparent ``E/S0'' structure in the FUV, while starbursts associated with rings or mergers produce a peculiar morphology. We briefly discuss the inadequacy of the optically-defined Hubble sequence to describe FUV galaxy images and estimate morphological k-corrections, and we suggest some directions for future research with this dataset., Comment: Accepted for publication in the ApJS. 15 pages, 17 JPEG figures, 10 GIF figures. We present observations of the new Local Group galaxy candidates Cassiopeia dSph, Pegasus dSph=AndVI and Camelopardalis A. Our deep color-magnitude diagrams show that the first two galaxies are certainly Local group members, and likely dSph galaxies at a distance similar to that of the Andromeda galaxy. We report on the discovery of Cepheids in the Virgo spiral galaxy NGC 4535, based on observations made with the Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 on board the Hubble Space Telescope. NGC 4535 is one of 18 galaxies observed as a part of The HST Key Project on the Extragalactic Distance Scale which aims to measure the Hubble constant to 10% accuracy. NGC 4535 was observed over 13 epochs using the F555W filter, and over 9 epochs using the F814W filter. The HST F555W and F814W data were transformed to the Johnson V and Kron-Cousins I magnitude systems, respectively. Photometry was performed using two independent programs, DoPHOT and DAOPHOT II/ALLFRAME. Period-luminosity relations in the V and I bands were constructed using 39 high-quality Cepheids present in our set of 50 variable candidates. We obtain a distance modulus of 31.02+/-0.26 mag, corresponding to a distance of 16.0+/-1.9 Mpc. We present deep HST F555W (V) and F814W (I) observations of a central field in the Local Group dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxy Leo I. The resulting color-magnitude diagram (CMD) reaches I \simeq 26 and reveals the oldest ~10-15 Gyr old turnoffs. Nevertheless, a horizontal branch is not obvious in the CMD. Given the low metallicity of the galaxy, this likely indicates that the first substantial star formation in the galaxy may have been somehow delayed in Leo I in comparison with the other dSph satellites of the Milky Way. The subgiant region is well and uniformly populated from the oldest turnoffs up to the 1 Gyr old turnoff, indicating that star formation has proceeded in a continuous way, with possible variations in intensity but no big gaps between successive bursts, over the galaxy's lifetime. The structure of the red-clump of core He-burning stars is consistent with the large amount of intermediate-age population inferred from the main sequence and the subgiant region. In spite of the lack of gas in Leo I, the CMD clearly shows star formation continuing until 1 Gyr ago and possibly until a few hundred Myrs ago in the central part of the galaxy., Comment: 26 pages with 8 figures (fig 2 not available electronically).
