This paper investigates the effect of primary school students’ utilization of extended education offerings and of the quality of extended education on reading achievement in the Germanspeaking part of Switzerland. All-day schools are being set up. Among other reasons, as a means to level the increasing scholastic demands in the primary schools. In this context, it is expected that students’ utilization of extended education will have a positive impact on their reading achievement. The authors analyzed data on 1,002 students from the longitudinal ‘EduCare-TaSe: All-Day School and School Success?’ study. Extended education offerings did not have a general effect on reading achievement. There was also no compensatory effect regarding the language spoken at home or socioeconomic status. However, the quality of extended education offerings had a positive effect on reading achievement in students with long-term utilization of extended education offerings. Tagesschulen werden in der Schweiz u. a. als Mittel diskutiert, um Schulleistungen zu fördern und darauf bezogene Herkunftseffekte aufgrund des sozioökonomischen Status oder der Erstsprache zu reduzieren. Der vorliegende Beitrag prüft diese Annahme anhand einer Stichprobe von 1806 Schülerinnen und Schülern aus 53 offenen Tagesschulen in der Deutschschweiz, die im Rahmen einer Längsschnittstudie zwischen Ende der 1. und Ende der 2. Jahrgangsstufe untersucht wurden, wobei nur ein Teil der Schülerschaft die Tagesschulangebote dauerhaft nutzte. Dabei zeigte sich kein genereller Effekt der dauerhaften Angebotsnutzung auf die Entwicklung von Mathematikleistungen und dies unabhängig von der Angebotsqualität. Ende der 1. Jahrgangsstufe wurden Herkunftseffekte festgestellt, wobei sich bei einem höheren sozioökonomischen Status oder bei Deutsch/Schweizerdeutsch als Erstsprache höhere Mathematikleistungen zeigten. Durch eine dauerhafte Nutzung des Tagesschulangebots konnten die sozialen Disparitäten reduziert werden. Hinsichtlich Erstsprache zeigte sich jedoch ein gegenteiliger Effekt, die dauerhafte Teilnahme am Angebot führte zu einer Zunahme der Unterschiede. This contribution explores those assumptions based on a sample of 1806 students from 53 open all-day schools located in the German-speaking part of Switzerland, which have been examined as part of a longitudinal study between the end of first and the end of second grade, with some students continuously utilizing all-day school offerings while others did not. Continuous utilization of all-day school offerings did not affect the development of mathematical skills, regardless of the quality of all-day school offerings. At the end of first grade, social and cultural disparities were found, with a higher socioeconomic status and German/Swiss-German as first language being linked to higher mathematical skills. Continuous utilization of all-day school offerings reduced disparities based on socioeconomic status. With regard to first language, opposite results emerged, with continuous utilization resulting in increased disparities. (DIPF/Orig.)

There is an expectation that all-day schools – schools that provide regular compulsory school instruction and in addition extended education offerings for voluntary participation – will reduce existing education inequality. This study focuses on whether utilization of extended education offerings varies in dependency on family background (migration background and socioeconomic status) or whether all-day schools are utilized equally by all students. In the framework of the research project EduCare-TaSe – All-Day Schools and School Success? this study examined utilization of extended education offerings in 1,099 students in Grade 1 at 53 all-day schools in the German-speaking part of Switzerland. The main finding is that the odds of utilizing extended education offerings are higher for students with a migration background and, further, that the odds of utilizing extended education offerings increase with higher socioeconomic status. Among children who utilize extended education offerings, intensity of utilization was higher for students with a migration background and for students with low socioeconomic status. But there are no indications that these two (risk) factors mutually influence each other with respect to intensity of utilization. For children at risk in the Swiss education system that have both migration background and low socioeconomic status only an additive effect can be detected. (DIPF/Orig.) In der vorliegenden Studie wird die Frage fokussiert, ob das Tagesschulangebot in Abhängigkeit vom familiären Hintergrund (Migrationshintergrund und sozioökonomischer Status) unterschiedlich genutzt wird oder ob es der Tagesschule gelingt, alle Schülerinnen und Schüler gleich gut zu erreichen. Im Rahmen der Studie EduCare-TaSe – Tagesschule und Schulerfolg? wurden in der Deutschschweiz 1099 Erstklässlerinnen und Erstklässler aus 53 Tagesschulen hinsichtlich deren Nutzung des Tagesschulangebots untersucht. Im aktuellen Bildungsdiskurs wird Tagesschulen gerade im Hinblick auf Bildungsgerechtigkeit und verbesserter individueller Förderung eine zentrale Rolle eingeräumt. Ob Deutschschweizer Tagesschulen die entsprechenden Lerngelegenheiten bieten, ist allerdings kaum bekannt. Dieser Beitrag diskutiert bildungsbezogene Erwartungen an Tagesschulen sowie gängige Qualitätsmodelle und untersucht anhand offener Tagesschulen aus der Deutschschweiz, welche Rolle pädagogische Motive bei der Gründung von Tagesschulen spielen, wie stark sich Schulleitung und Lehrpersonen an der konzeptionellen Ausarbeitung beteiligen, welche individualisierenden und differenzierenden Förderelemente im Tagesschulangebot verankert sind und ob Letztere von Schulentwicklungsmerkmalen beeinflusst werden. (DIPF/Orig.) La thématique des horaires scolaires continus est au coeur des discussions actuelles sur l’éducation, notamment par rapport à la justice scolaire et au soutien individualisé. Toutefois, on manque encore d’informations sur les opportunités réelles d’apprentissage offertes par les écoles à horaire continu de Suisse alémanique. Cet article met en discussion les attentes éducatives envers ces écoles à horaire continu ainsi que les modèles de qualité en vigueur. Il examine également, pour les écoles à horaire continu de Suisse alémanique, les motivations pédagogiques qui prévalent à leur fondation, la participation des directions d’école et celle des enseignants lors de leur création, les différents dispositifs de soutien individualisé et différencié proposés tout en analysant si ceux-ci sont influencés par les développements actuels dans le champ scolaire.
