Aim The largemouth bass Micropterus salmoides was introduced in more than 50 countries for the purpose of sport fishing. In Brazil, records date from 1922, and nowadays many populations are known to occur in the southern region. Here we investigated the reproductive biology of this species in a small reservoir in southern Brazil, to understand the role of the reproductive strategy in the invasion process and assist in its management. We conclude with suggestions for the management in local scale, as this species can bring relevant problems to the public supply through trophic cascade and other negative effects. Methods Samples were performed with different methods, between May 2011 and April 2012. All fishes were measured, and the reproductive season was determined through the relative frequency of reproductive stages and the gonadosomatic index. Sex ratio was calculated monthly and for each total length (TL) class and compared with the estimates presented in the literature. Total length at maturity (L50, length at which 50% of the individuals were mature) was estimated for females, males and the entire study population. Results A total of 565 individuals of M. salmoides were analyzed. Overall sex-ratio did not differ significantly. The monthly distribution of the gonadosomatic index for females and males showed higher values between August (late winter) and November 2011 (austral spring). ��-Binomial modelling of sex-ratio data of native (n=1) and introduced populations (n=7) showed a lower proportion of females in its native range. All individuals > 21.5 cm TL were mature (L95), and L50 was calculated at 18.7 cm TL. After the reproductive period, an increase in the abundance of young individuals (≤ 7.0 cm TL) was registered, corresponding to 50% of all individuals collected. The relative frequency of mature individuals and the variation in the gonadosomatic index indicate a prolonged spawning period during the austral spring, coinciding with the increase in temperature. Conclusions Results suggested that some changes in life history traits, such as the early sexual maturation and the long reproductive period, coupled with a remarkable adaptability, may have facilitated the establishment of M. salmoides populations in this reservoir. The illegal and intentional stocking by anglers plays a central role in the introduction and dispersal of M. salmoides in Brazil. We encourage studies on the sanitary quality of this fish for human consumption, so that massive campaigns of education the population to encourage capture and consumption are implemented by the competent authorities as a control measure in local scale, combined with targeted samplings with artificial baits during the reproductive period, identification, and removal of nests and fingerlings using electric fishing or trap nets during the recruitment period. Resumo Objetivo O black-bass Micropterus salmoides foi introduzido em mais de 50 países para fins de pesca esportiva. No Brasil, os primeiros registros datam de 1922 e atualmente muitas populações são conhecidas na região sul. Neste trabalho investigamos a biologia reprodutiva desta espécie em um pequeno reservatório no sul do Brasil, para entender o papel da estratégia reprodutiva no processo de invasão e auxiliar no manejo. Concluímos com sugestões para o manejo em escala local, pois esta espécie pode trazer problemas relevantes ao abastecimento público através da cascata trófica e outros efeitos negativos. Métodos As amostragens foram realizadas com diferentes métodos, entre maio de 2011 e abril de 2012. Todos os peixes foram medidos, e a época reprodutiva foi determinada através da frequência relativa dos estádios reprodutivos e do índice gonadossomático. A razão sexual foi calculada mensalmente para cada classe de comprimento total (CT) e comparada com as estimativas apresentadas na literatura. O comprimento total de primeira maturidade (L50, comprimento em que 50% dos indivíduos estavam maduros) foi estimado para fêmeas, machos e toda a população de estudo. Resultados Um total de 565 indivíduos de M. salmoides foi analisado. A razão geral entre os sexos não foi significativa. A distribuição mensal do índice gonadossomático para fêmeas e machos apresentou maiores valores entre agosto (final do inverno) e novembro de 2011 (primavera austral). A modelagem ��-binomial dos dados de proporção sexual de populações nativas (n=1) e introduzidas (n=7) mostrou uma menor proporção de fêmeas em sua área nativa. Todos os indivíduos > 21,5 cm CT eram maduros (L95), e o L50 calculado foi de 18,7 cm TL. Após o período reprodutivo, foi registrado um aumento na abundância de indivíduos jovens (≤ 7,0 cm CP), correspondendo a 50% de todos os indivíduos coletados. A frequência relativa de indivíduos maduros e a variação do índice gonadossomático indicam um período prolongado de desova durante a primavera austral, coincidindo com o aumento da temperatura. Conclusões Os resultados sugerem que algumas mudanças nas características de vida, como a maturação sexual precoce e o longo período reprodutivo, aliadas a uma notável adaptabilidade, podem ter facilitado o estabelecimento de populações de M. salmoides neste reservatório. A estocagem ilegal e intencional por pescadores tem papel central na introdução e dispersão de M. salmoides no Brasil. Incentivamos estudos sobre a qualidade sanitária desse pescado para consumo humano, para que campanhas massivas de educação da população para incentivar a captura e consumo sejam implementadas pelos órgãos competentes como medida de controle em escala local, combinada com amostragens direcionadas com iscas artificiais durante o período reprodutivo, identificação e retirada de ninhos e alevinos por meio de pesca elétrica ou rede-armadilha durante o período de recrutamento.

The reproductive biology of Centropomus parallelus was described from 589 individuals captured in estuarine and coastal waters in Southern Brazil. Length‐frequency distribution showed the dominance of males in smaller length‐classes (132–290 mm LT), whereas females were dominant in larger length‐classes (>290 mm LT). Total length at maturity (L50) was 180 mm LT and corresponded to 29% of the maximum length recorded. Histological sections revealed one hermaphrodite (205 mm LT) and few immature females. Foram investigados a estrutura populacional e os aspectos reprodutivos da betara Menticirrhus americanus no litoral norte de Santa Catarina. Redes de arrasto com porta foram utilizadas para as coletas mensais, entre outubro de 2003 e setembro de 2004. Foram analisados 425 indivíduos entre 4,2 e 31,8cm (média 12,7 ± 5,7). A maioria dos indivíduos de menor porte (entre 4,2 e 12,5cm) foi capturada no verão, outono e inverno, enquanto indivíduos maiores foram capturados principalmente na primavera. Fêmeas de todas as classes de tamanho foram predominantes significativamente no verão e inverno. A relação peso-comprimento mostrou diferenças significativas entre os sexos, com crescimento alométrico positivo para a espécie. O comprimento médio de primeira maturação gonadal (L50) foi estimado em 16,7cm para fêmeas e 15,4cm para machos. O período reprodutivo ocorreu nas estações quentes, e a espécie apresentou desova múltipla. O índice hepatossomático apresentou variação sazonal similar à descrita para o índice gonadossomático, e pode ser considerado bom indicador da desova. O fator de condição não foi um bom indicador do período de desova, mas esteve relacionado com o processo de recuperação e maturação das gônadas. Características da dinâmica populacional mostraram que M. americanus utiliza a área de estudo para reprodução e recrutamento.

Resumo: A auto-ecologia da garoupa (Epinephelus morio) e do badejo (Mycteroperca bonaci) foram avaliadas no Banco dos Abrolhos entre maio de 2005 e setembro de 2012. Exemplares foram comprados nos desembarques pesqueiros das cidades de Prado, Alcobaça, Caravelas e Nova Viçosa informações morfométricas de comprimento e peso foram mensurados. A coleta, fixação e processamento de estômagos, gônadas e otólitos seguiram rotinas descritas em literaturas específicas. Em virtude da falta de informações dos aspectos ecológicos básicos destes dois Epinefelídeos mais explorados pela pesca no Banco dos Abrolhos, foi estruturada esta tese, dividida em três capítulos. No capítulo 1 avaliamos e comparamos a dieta das espécies em relação aos estágios de desenvolvimento, estações do ano e habitats ao longo do Banco dos Abrolhos. No capítulo 2 os aspectos da biologia reprodutiva foram avaliados, com ênfase na caracterização das épocas de desova, localização dos sítios potenciais de desova, levantamento do conhecimento ecológico local e relação dos fatores climáticos com os picos de reprodução. No capítulo 3 os parâmetros de idade e crescimento de E. morio e M. bonaci foram avaliados, para a amostra total das populações e entre sexos. Resultados da dieta evidenciaram que ambas as espécies ingerem principalmente decápodes e peixes (E. morio: decápodes 59,5% IRI e teleósteos 38,6% IRI - M. bonaci: teleósteos 92,1% IRI). PERMANOVA two-way crossed dos pesos padronizados verificou que o estádio ontogênico (P = 0,001) e habitat (P = 0,015) influenciaram significativamente a dieta garoupas e do badejo. Em relação à reprodução, os picos de IGS de fêmeas de badejo estiveram concentrados entre os meses de agosto e outubro, indicando uma desova no inverno austral. O L50 estimado para fêmeas foi de 62,0 cm de CT e L100 de 78,0 cm de CT, com a menor fêmea ativa registrada com 47,7 cm de CT. Valores elevados de IGS de fêmeas de garoupa ocorreram entre os meses de julho a outubro, com picos nos meses de agosto e setembro. Folículos pós-ovulatórios foram observados em amostras coletadas nos dias 28 de setembro de 2007, 30 de agosto de 2011 e 30 de agosto de 2012. O L50 estimado para fêmeas foi de 47,0 cm de CT e L100 foi de 63,0 cm de CT. Evidências do padrão hermafrodita foram registrados para ambas as espécies e os resultados sugerem ainda que machos tornam-se ativos após a transição de sexo. Foi verificada uma alta relação entre os picos de IGS com as variações climáticas adversas, como baixas de temperatura e incidência de ventos. Para a garoupa as idades variaram de 0 a 30 para as leitura 1 e 0 a 29 anos na leitura 2. Nos badejos as idades estimadas na leitura 1 variaram de 1 a 34 e na segunda leitura de 1 a 33 anos. O erro percentual médio (APE) em E. morio entre as duas leituras foi de 1,874% e o Coeficiente de Variação foi de 2,651%. Para a espécie M. bonaci o APE foi de 1,9 e CV de 2,687%. Para ambas as espécies, uma banda opaca é estabelecida anualmente a partir do final do inverno (agosto e setembro) e inicio do verão (dezembro). Os parâmetros de crescimento de von Bertalanffy estimados para a amostra total de otólitos de E. morio variaram de 110,03 a 118,80 cm (L?), de 0,38 a 0,45 (K), e -5,02, a -5,66 (t0). Em M. bonaci os parâmetros de crescimento estimados para a amostra total dos otólitos variaram de 161,04 a 183,61 cm (L?), de 0,28 a 0,35 (K), e -5.93, a -6,54 (t0). Sugerimos que os resultados apresentados neste estudo sejam utilizados como subsidio para o estabelecimento de estratégias de regulamentação de suas pescarias no Banco dos Abrolhos e que sirvam de base para avaliações dos estoques destes importantes recursos pesqueiros do nordeste do Brasil. Several aspects of the reproductive biology of the dusky grouper Epinephelus marginatus were investigated using a collaborative methodology. 193 specimens of dusky groupers were obtained in collaboration with fish market personnel in the city of São Francisco do Sul, Santa Catarina State, Southern Brazil. Fish market staff were trained and encouraged to collect biological material required for reproductive studies, giving access to many specimens which otherwise would have been unavailable. E. marginatus was found to reproduce in early summer, spawning between November and December. Females reached sexual maturity at approximately 460 mm total length. Sampled males ranged from 900- 1000 mm and females from 300-960 mm in total length. No transitional (i.e. sex changing) males were observed. The regression equation for the relationship between total length (TL) (mm) and total weight (TW) (g) was TW = 4.4x10-5TL2.8. Suggestions to improve the performance of future collaborative sampling projects are discussed. Diversos aspectos da biologia reprodutiva da garoupa verdadeira Epinephelus marginatus foram abordados através de uma metodologia colaborativa. Ao todo, 193 exemplares da garoupa verdadeira foram obtidas em peixarias colaboradoras no município de São Francisco do Sul, Estado de Santa Catarina, Brasil. Os funcionários das peixarias foram treinados e incentivados a realizar a coleta de todo material biológico necessário para estudos reprodutivos, possibilitando o acesso a um grande número de vísceras que teriam de outra maneira sido dispensadas. Epinephelus marginatus esteve em atividade reprodutiva no inicio do verão, com desova provável entre novembro e dezembro. Fêmeas atingiram a maturidade sexual com aproximadamente 460 mm de comprimento total. Machos variaram de 900mm a 1000 mm e fêmeas de 300 mm a 960 mm. Não foram observados machos em transição sexual. A equação de regressão da relação entre o comprimento total (CT) (mm) e peso total (PT) (g) foi dada (PT = 4.4 x 10-5 CT2. 8). Sugestões são dadas ainda para o aumento da performance de futuras abordagens colaborativas de pesquisa.

Individuals of Zapteryx brevirostris were caught from August 2003 to September 2004 using bottom trawl nets in a bay located in Southern Brazil. Total length ranged from 42.8 to 47.3 cm in males and 44.1 to 52.2 cm in females. Females with early developing embiyos were captured in August 2003 and September 2004, suggesting that gestation occurs mainly in the spring. Length-weight relationship of the 45 embryos was alometric, and embryos' total length did not reach the estimated newborn length. The data suggested that the studied area is used by Z. brevirostris during the gestation period. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Otolith-based methods combined with catch lengths were used to produce three simple fishing indicators for assessing stock status of the lane snapper Lutjanus synagris in the Abrolhos Bank, central Brazilian coast. Fish were obtained during landings between May 2005 and June 2007. Marginal Increment Analyses combined with edge analysis on sectioned otoliths (n = 303) confirmed annulus formation in an annual basis during June-October. Lane snapper were aged up to 18 years and the largest fish measured 56 cm total length. Growth was not significantly different between sexes, and the von Bertalanffy growth equation was derived as Lt = 56[1-e (−0.22(t−0.0)) ]. Highest cohort yield was achieved between 33.5–41.4 cm (optimal length) at ages 4–6. Age at first maturity was 2.8 years, and generation length was 10 years. Instantaneous total mortality (Z) was 0.58 year −1 and natural mortality rate (M) ranged from 0.17–0.36 year −1 . Overall indicators point out for the need to implement fish management, as 30% of catch are composed of immature individuals and 7–12% by mega-spawners. A slot limit for the lane snapper in Abrolhos Bank is proposed, with restrictions for individuals < 24 and > 50 cm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The Neotropical region hosts 4225 freshwater fish species, ranking first among the world's most diverse regions for freshwater fishes. Our NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set is the first to produce a large-scale Neotropical freshwater fish inventory, covering the entire Neotropical region from Mexico and the Caribbean in the north to the southern limits in Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, and Uruguay. We compiled 185,787 distribution records, with unique georeferenced coordinates, for the 4225 species, represented by occurrence and abundance data. The number of species for the most numerous orders are as follows: Characiformes (1289), Siluriformes (1384), Cichliformes (354), Cyprinodontiformes (245), and Gymnotiformes (135). The most recorded species was the characid Astyanax fasciatus (4696 records). We registered 116,802 distribution records for native species, compared to 1802 distribution records for nonnative species. The main aim of the NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set was to make these occurrence and abundance data accessible for international researchers to develop ecological and macroecological studies, from local to regional scales, with focal fish species, families, or orders. We anticipate that the NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set will be valuable for studies on a wide range of ecological processes, such as trophic cascades, fishery pressure, the effects of habitat loss and fragmentation, and the impacts of species invasion and climate change.
