Abstract

Automatic quantification of perifoveal vessel densities in optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A) images face challenges such as variable intra- and inter-image signal to noise ratios, projection artefacts from outer vasculature layers, and motion artefacts. This study demonstrates the utility of deep neural networks for automatic quantification of foveal avascular zone (FAZ) parameters and perifoveal vessel density of OCT-A images in healthy and diabetic eyes. OCT-A images of the foveal region were acquired using three OCT-A systems: a 1060nm Swept Source (SS)-OCT prototype, RTVue XR Avanti (Optovue Inc., Fremont, CA), and the ZEISS Angioplex (Carl Zeiss Meditec, Dublin, CA). Automated segmentation was then performed using a deep neural network. Four FAZ morphometric parameters (area, min/max diameter, and eccentricity) and perifoveal vessel density were used as outcome measures. The accuracy, sensitivity and specificity of the DNN vessel segmentations were comparable across all three device platforms. No significant difference between the means of the measurements from automated and manual segmentations were found for any of the outcome measures on any system. The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was also good (> 0.51) for all measurements. Abstract

The GERmanium Detector Array (GERDA) is a low background experiment located at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy, which searches for neutrinoless double beta decay of $^{76}$Ge into $^{76}$Se+2e$^-$. GERDA has been conceived in two phases. Phase II, which started in December 2015, features several novelties including 30 new Ge detectors. These were manufactured according to the Broad Energy Germanium (BEGe) detector design that has a better background discrimination capability and energy resolution compared to formerly widely-used types. Prior to their installation, the new BEGe detectors were mounted in vacuum cryostats and characterized in detail in the HADES underground laboratory in Belgium. This paper describes the properties and the overall performance of these detectors during operation in vacuum. The characterization campaign provided not only direct input for GERDA Phase II data collection and analyses, but also allowed to study detector phenomena, detector correlations as well as to test the strength of pulse shape simulation codes., Comment: 29 pages, 18 figures

Abstract

Abstract

The Standard Model of particle physics cannot explain the dominance of matter over anti-matter in our Universe. In many model extensions this is a very natural consequence of neutrinos being their own anti-particles (Majorana particles) which implies that a lepton number violating radioactive decay named neutrinoless double beta ($0\nu\beta\beta$) decay should exist. The detection of this extremely rare hypothetical process requires utmost suppression of any kind of backgrounds. The GERDA collaboration searches for $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay of $^{76}$Ge ($^{76}\rm{Ge} \rightarrow\,^{76}\rm{Se} + 2e^-$) by operating bare detectors made from germanium with enriched $^{76}$Ge fraction in liquid argon. Here, we report on first data of GERDA Phase II. A background level of $\approx10^{-3}$ cts/(keV$\cdot$kg$\cdot$yr) has been achieved which is the world-best if weighted by the narrow energy-signal region of germanium detectors. Combining Phase I and II data we find no signal and deduce a new lower limit for the half-life of $5.3\cdot10^{25}$ yr at 90 % C.L. Our sensitivity of $4.0\cdot10^{25}$ yr is competitive with the one of experiments with significantly larger isotope mass. GERDA is the first $0\nu\beta\beta$ experiment that will be background-free up to its design exposure. This progress relies on a novel active veto system, the superior germanium detector energy resolution and the improved background recognition of our new detectors. 41. CAVITARY CHOROIDAL NEVUS SHOWING THICKNESS FLUCTUATIONS IN RESPONSE TO ANTI-VASCULAR ENDOTHELIAL GROWTH FACTOR THERAPY FOR DIABETIC MACULAR EDEMA: A CASE REPORT.

Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to report the multimodal imaging features of a cavitary choroidal nevus showing thickness fluctuations that mirrored the response of diabetic macular edema (DME) to intravitreal antivascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) therapy. Methods: This is a retrospective case report. Multimodal imaging findings including fundus photography, optical coherence tomography (OCT), fluorescein and indocyanine green angiography, OCT-angiography (OCTA), and B-scan ultrasonography were analyzed. Results: A woman in her 80s with a cavitary choroidal nevus and DME was treated with intravitreal anti-VEGF therapy using a pro re nata regimen over 5 years. The choroidal nevus showed thickness fluctuations paralleling the response of DME to anti-VEGF therapy. Worsening of the DME was associated with marked increased choroidal lesion thickness on OCT. Conversely, resolution of DME after intravitreal anti-VEGF injections was followed by choroidal lesion flattening on OCT. Variations of the choroidal lesion thickness were mainly dependent on changes of intralesional hyporeflective caverns on OCT. Conclusion: Our report shows thickness variations of a cavitary choroidal nevus that paralleled the clinical course of DME treated with intravitreal anti-VEGF therapy. 42. RECURRENT ANTERIOR UVEITIS ASSOCIATED WITH MAJOR FLUCTUATIONS IN CHOROIDAL THICKNESS IN A PATIENT WITH PACHYCHOROID DISORDER.

Abstract

Purpose: To describe remarkable choroidal thickness fluctuations corresponding to episodes of recurrent anterior uveitis with subretinal fluid development when exceeding a choroidal thickness threshold. Methods: A patient with pachychoroid pigment epitheliopathy and unilateral acute anterior uveitis of the left eye was evaluated over a period of 3 years with multimodal retinal imaging including optical coherence tomography. Longitudinal changes in subfoveal choroidal thickness (CT) were measured and correlated with episodes of recurrent inflammation. Results: Over the course of five recurrent episodes of inflammation in the left eye treated with oral antiviral and topical steroid therapy, subfoveal CT increased as much as 200 mm or more. By contrast, subfoveal CT in the fellow quiescent right eye was within normal limits and minimally changed throughout the follow-up. Increased CT occurred with each episode of anterior uveitis and decreased by 200 mm or more during periods of quiescence in the affected left eye. Subretinal fluid and macular edema developed with a maximum CT of 486 mm and spontaneously resolved when CT decreased after treatment. Conclusion: In eyes with pachychoroid disease, anterior segment inflammation may lead to marked increases in subfoveal CT and the development of subretinal fluid at a threshold thickness value. Abstract

Internal contaminations of $^{238}$U, $^{235}$U and $^{232}$Th in the bulk of high purity germanium detectors are potential backgrounds for experiments searching for neutrinoless double beta decay of $^{76}$Ge. The data from GERDA Phase~I have been analyzed for alpha events from the decay chain of these contaminations by looking for full decay chains and for time correlations between successive decays in the same detector. No candidate events for a full chain have been found. Upper limits on the activities in the range of a few nBq/kg for $^{226}$Ra, $^{227}$Ac and $^{228}$Th, the long-lived daughter nuclides of $^{238}$U, $^{235}$U and $^{232}$Th, respectively, have been derived. With these upper limits a background index in the energy region of interest from $^{226}$Ra and $^{228}$Th contamination is estimated which satisfies the prerequisites of a future ton scale germanium double beta decay experiment., Comment: 2 figures, 7 pages

Abstract

Neutrinoless double electron capture is a process that, if detected, would give evidence of lepton number violation and the Majorana nature of neutrinos. A search for neutrinoless double electron capture of $^{36}$Ar has been performed with germanium detectors installed in liquid argon using data from Phase I of the GERmanium Detector Array (GERDA) experiment at the Gran Sasso Laboratory of INFN, Italy. No signal was observed and an experimental lower limit on the half-life of the radiative neutrinoless double electron capture of $^{36}$Ar was established: $T_{1/2} > $ 3.6 $\times$ 10$^{21}$ yr at 90 % C.I., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

The GERDA experiment at LNGS of INFN is equipped with an active muon veto. The main part of the system is a water Cherenkov veto with 66~PMTs in the water tank surrounding the GERDA cryostat. The muon flux recorded by this veto shows a seasonal modulation. Two effects have been identified which are caused by secondary muons from the CNGS neutrino beam (2.2 %) and a temperature modulation of the atmosphere (1.4 %). A mean cosmic muon rate of $I^0_{\mu} = (3.477 \pm 0.002_{\textrm{stat}} \pm 0.067_{\textrm{sys}}) \times 10^{-4}$/(s$\cdot$m$^2$) was found in good agreement with other experiments at LNGS at a depth of 3500~meter water equivalent., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures
