We present an overview of the operations and engineering interface for Planetary Radio Interferometry and Doppler Experiment (PRIDE) radio astronomy observations as a scientific component of the ESA s Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (JUICE) mission, as well as other prospective planetary and space science missions. The article discusses advanced scheduling and planning methods that make it possible to create observing schedules for observations of specific spacecraft in concurrence with observations of natural radio sources. In order to put this into practice and find suitable natural background calibrator sources for PRIDE of JUICE mission, we developed planning and scheduling software. The conventional scheduling software for natural celestial radio sources is not set up to include spacecraft as observation targets in the necessary control files. Therefore, difficulties already arise during observation planning. We report on the development of new and the adaptation of existing routines used in astrophysical and geodetic VLBI for satellite scheduling and planning. The analysis of the PRIDE science observations led to improved observational planning, and the mission s scheduling methodologies were studied using a systems engineering approach. In addition, we highlighted the new procedures, like finding charts for selecting calibrator radio sources over a range of frequency bands and the outcomes of those strategies for science operation planning. A simulation of the flyby of Venus during the cruise phase of the JUICE spacecraft, based on the Tudat software, is also presented, resulting in a promising opportunity to test PRIDE techniques and evaluate the improvements that PRIDE observables can make to natural bodies ephemerides., Comment: 34 pages

Over the past two decades, our knowledge of the high-redshift (z > 5) radio quasars has expanded, thanks to dedicated high-resolution very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations. Distant quasars provide unique information about the formation and evolution of the first galaxies and supermassive black holes in the Universe. Powerful relativistic jets are likely to have played an essential role in these processes. However, the sample of VLBI-observed radio quasars is still too small to allow meaningful statistical conclusions. We extend the list of the VLBI observed radio quasars to investigate how the source structure and physical parameters are related to radio loudness. We assembled a sample of 10 faint radio quasars located at 5 < z < 6 with their radio-loudness indices spanning between 0.9-76. We observed the selected targets with the European VLBI Network (EVN) at 1.7 GHz. The milliarcsecond-scale resolution of VLBI at this frequency allows us to probe the compact innermost parts of radio-emitting relativistic jets. In addition to the single-band VLBI observations, we collected single-dish and low-resolution radio interferometric data to investigate the spectral properties and variability of our sources. The detection rate of this high-redshift, low-flux-density sample is 90%, with only one target (J0306+1853) remaining undetected. The other 9 sources appear core-dominated and show a single, faint and compact radio core on this angular scale. The derived radio powers are typical of FRII radio galaxies and quasars. By extending our sample with other VLBI-detected z > 5 sources from the literature, we found that the core brightness temperatures and monochromatic radio powers tend to increase with radio loudness., Comment: Submitted to Astronomy & Astrophysics

Context. According to the hierarchical structure formation model, brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) evolve into the most luminous and massive galaxies in the Universe through multiple merger events. The peculiar radio source 4C 35.06 is located at the core of the galaxy cluster Abell 407, overlapping with a compact group of nine galaxies. Low-frequency radio observations have revealed a helical, steep-spectrum, kiloparsec-scale jet structure and inner lobes with less steep spectra, compatible with a recurring active galactic nucleus (AGN) activity scenario. However, the host galaxy of the AGN responsible for the detected radio emission remained unclear. Aims. We aim to identify the host of 4C 35.06 by studying the object at high angular resolution and thereby confirm the recurrent AGN activity scenario. Methods. To reveal the host of the radio source, we carried out very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations with the European VLBI Network of the nine galaxies in the group at 1.7 and 4.9 GHz. Results. We detected compact radio emission from an AGN located between the two inner lobes at both observing frequencies. In addition, we detected another galaxy at 1.7 GHz, whose position appears more consistent with the principal jet axis and is located closer to the low-frequency radio peak of 4C 35.06. The presence of another radio-loud AGN in the nonet sheds new light on the BCG formation and provides an alternative scenario in which not just one but two AGNs are responsible for the complex large-scale radio structure, Comment: accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics (A&A), 7 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables

The prominent radio quasar PKS 2215+020 (J2217+0220) was once labelled as a new laboratory for core--jet physics at redshift z=3.572 because of its exceptionally extended jet structure traceable with very long baseline interferometric (VLBI) observations up to a ~600 pc projected distance from the compact core and a hint of an arcsec-scale radio and an X-ray jet. While the presence of an X-ray jet could not be confirmed later, this active galactic nucleus is still unique at high redshift with its long VLBI jet. Here, we analyse archival multi-epoch VLBI imaging data at five frequency bands from 1.7 to 15.4 GHz covering a period of more than 25 years from 1995 to 2020. We constrain apparent proper motions of jet components in PKS 2215+020 for the first time. Brightness distribution modeling at 8 GHz reveals a nearly 0.02 mas/yr proper motion (moderately superluminal with apparently two times the speed of light), and provides delta=11.5 for the Doppler-boosting factor in the inner relativistic jet that is inclined within 2 deg to the line of sight and has a Gamma=6 bulk Lorentz factor. These values qualify PKS 2215+020 as a blazar, with rather typical jet properties in a small sample of only about 20 objects at z>3.5 that have similar measurements to date. According to the 2-GHz VLBI data, the diffuse and extended outer emission feature at ~60 mas from the core, probably a place where the jet interacts with and decelerated by the ambient galactic medium, is consistent with being stationary, albeit slow motion cannot be excluded based on the presently available data., Comment: 18 pages, 2 figures, 5 tables, accepted for publication in Universe

Narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies are a peculiar subclass of active galactic nuclei (AGN). Among them, TXS 1206+549 belongs to a small group of radio-loud and gamma-ray-emitting NLS1 galaxies. We focus on the radio properties of this galaxy by analysing archival, high-resolution, very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) imaging observations taken at 8 GHz frequency in six epochs between 1994 and 2018. Using the milliarcsecond-scale radio structure, we can resolve a core and a jet component whose angular separation increases by (0.055 +/- 0.006) mas/yr. This corresponds to an apparent superluminal jet component motion of (3.5 +/- 0.4) c. From the core brightness temperature and the jet component proper motion, we determine the characteristic Doppler-boosting factor, the bulk Lorentz factor, and the jet viewing angle. We find no compelling evidence for a very closely aligned blazar-type jet. The parameters for TXS 1206+549 resemble those of radio-loud quasar jets with a moderate Lorentz factor (Gamma~4) and theta~24 deg inclination to the line of sight., Comment: 14 pages, 2 tables, 2 figures, accepted for publication in Galaxies

There is still a limited number of high-redshift ($z>3$) active galactic nuclei (AGN) whose jet kinematics have been studied with very long baseline interferometry (VLBI). Without a dedicated proper motion survey, regularly conducted astrometric VLBI observations of bright radio-emitting AGN with sensitive arrays can be utilized to follow changes in the jets, by means of high-resolution imaging and brightness distribution modeling. Here we present a first-time VLBI jet kinematic study of NVSS~J080518$+$614423 ($z = 3.033$) and NVSS~J165844$-$073918 ($z = 3.742$), two flat-spectrum radio quasars that display milliarcsecond-scale jet morphology. Archival astrometric observations carried out mainly with the Very Long Baseline Array, supplemented by recent data taken with the European VLBI Network, allowed us to monitor changes in their radio structure in the $7.6-8.6$~GHz frequency band, covering almost two decades. By identifying individual jet components at each epoch, we were able to determine the apparent proper motion for multiple features in both sources. Apparent superluminal motions range between $(1-14)\,c$, and are found to be consistent with studies of other high-redshift AGN targets. Using the physical parameters derived from the brightness distribution modeling, we estimate the Doppler-boosting factors ($\delta \approx 11.2$ and $\delta \approx 2.7$), the Lorentz factors ($\Gamma \approx 7.4$ and $\Gamma \approx 36.6$) and the jet viewing angles ($\theta \approx 4\fdg4$ and $\theta \approx 8\fdg0$), for NVSS~J080518$+$614423 and NVSS~J165844$-$073918, respectively. Recent studies suggest that high-energy neutrinos can be produced in the jets of blazars, radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGN) with jets pointing close to the line of sight. Due to the relatively poor angular resolution of current neutrino detectors, several sources can be regarded as the possible counterpart of a given neutrino event. Therefore, follow-up observations of counterpart candidates in the electromagnetic regime are essential. Since the Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) technique provides the highest angular resolution to study the radio jets of blazars, a growing number of investigations are being conducted to connect individual blazars to given high-energy neutrino events. We analyzed more than 20 years of available archival VLBI data of the blazar CTD 74, which has been listed as a possible counterpart of a neutrino event. Using cm-wavelength data, we investigated the jet structure, determined the apparent speed of jet components, and the core flux density before and after the neutrino event. Our results indicate stationary jet features and a significant brightening of the core after the neutrino event.

Planetary Radio Interferometry and Doppler Experiment (PRIDE) is a multi-purpose experimental technique aimed at enhancing the science return of planetary missions. The technique exploits the science payload and spacecraft service systems without requiring a dedicated onboard instrumentation or imposing on the existing instrumentation any special for PRIDE requirements. PRIDE is based on the near-field phase-referencing Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) and evaluation of the Doppler shift of the radio signal transmitted by spacecraft by observing it with multiple Earth-based radio telescopes. The methodology of PRIDE has been developed initially at the Joint Institute for VLBI ERIC (JIVE) for tracking the ESA's Huygens Probe during its descent in the atmosphere of Titan in 2005. From that point on, the technique has been demonstrated for various planetary and other space science missions. The estimates of lateral position of the target spacecraft are done using the phase-referencing VLBI technique. Together with radial Doppler estimates, these observables can be used for a variety of applications, including improving the knowledge of the spacecraft state vector. The PRIDE measurements can be applied to a broad scope of research fields including studies of atmospheres through the use of radio occultations, the improvement of planetary and satellite ephemerides, as well as gravity field parameters and other geodetic properties of interest, and estimations of interplanetary plasma properties. Analyzing single-dish and VLBI radio, as well as \textit{Fermi}-LAT $\gamma$-ray observations, we explained the three major flares in the $\gamma$-ray light curve of FSRQ J1048+7143 with the spin--orbit precession of the dominant mass black hole in a supermassive black hole binary system. Here, we report on the detection of a fourth $\gamma$-ray flare from J1048+7143, appearing in the time interval which was predicted in our previous work. Including this new flare, we constrained the mass ratio into a narrow range of $0.062

Using empty-field `Quick Look' images from the first two epochs of the VLA Sky Survey (VLASS) observations, centred on the positions of $\sim3700$ individually radio-non-detected active galactic nuclei (AGNs) at $z\ge4$, we performed image stacking analysis to examine the sub-mJy emission at $3$ GHz. We found characteristic monochromatic radio powers of $P_\mathrm{char}=(2-13) \times 10^{24}$ W Hz$^{-1}$, $P_\mathrm{char}=2\times10^{24}-1.3\times10^{25}$ W Hz$^{-1}$, indicating that AGN-related radio emission is widespread in the sample. The signal-to-noise ratios of the redshift-binned median stacked maps are between $4-6$, and we expect that with the inclusion of the yet to be completed third-epoch VLASS observations, the detection limit defined as signal-to-noise ratio $\mathrm{SNR}\ge6$ could be reached, and the redshift dependence can be determined. To obtain information on the general spectral properties of the faint radio emission in high-redshift AGNs, we confined the sample to $\sim3000$ objects covered by both the VLASS and the Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty-centimeters (FIRST) survey. We found that the flux densities from the median stacked maps show a characteristic spectral index of $\alpha^*=-0.30\pm0.15$, which is in agreement with the median spectral index of the radio-detected $z\ge4$ AGNs from our high-redshift AGN catalogue. The three-band mid-infrared colour--colour diagram based on Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer observations provides further support regarding the AGN contribution to the radio emission in the sub-mJy sample., Comment: 9 pages,7 figures, 3 tables. The radio quasar NVSS J141922$-$083830 (J1419$-$0838) was initially classified as an uncategorised blazar-type object, following its detection in the $\gamma$-ray band with the Fermi space telescope. Later, using multi-waveband observations and modeling, its was found to be a flat-spectrum radio quasar (FSRQ). However, its radio emission has never been discussed in depth in the literature. Here we present a detailed analysis on the radio properties of J1419$-$0838 using archival interferometric imaging data at pc and kpc scales. We conclude that the flux density variations, the flat radio spectrum, the compact nature of the quasar structure at all scales, and the relativistic Doppler enhancement of the radio emission all support the previous classification as an FSRQ. We also investigated the short- and long-term mid-infrared (MIR) light curve of the quasar based on observations by the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer satellite, and found that there is significant variability on time-scales of days as well as years. Radio-loud quasars at high redshift (z > 4) are rare objects in the Universe and rarely observed with Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI). But some of them have flux density sufficiently high for monitoring of their apparent position. The instability of the astrometric positions could be linked to the astrophysical process in the jetted active galactic nuclei in the early Universe. Regular observations of the high-redshift quasars are used for estimating their apparent proper motion over several years. We have undertaken regular VLBI observations of several high-redshift quasars at 2.3 GHz (S band) and 8.4 GHz (X band) with a network of five radio telescopes: 40-m Yebes (Spain), 25-m Sheshan (China), and three 32-m telescopes of the Quasar VLBI Network (Russia) -- Svetloe, Zelenchukskaya, and Badary. Additional facilities joined this network occasionally. The sources have also been observed in three sessions with the European VLBI Network (EVN) in 2018--2019 and one Long Baseline Array (LBA) experiment in 2018. In addition, several experiments conducted with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) in 2017--2018were used to improve the time sampling and the statistics. Based on these 37 astrometric VLBI experiments between 2017 and 2021, we estimated the apparent proper motions of four quasars: 0901+697, 1428+422, 1508+572, and 2101+600.

Dwarf galaxies are characterised by a very low luminosity and low mass. Because of significant accretion and ejection activity of massive black holes, some dwarf galaxies also host low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (AGNs). In a few dwarf AGNs, very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations have found faint non-thermal radio emission. SDSS J090613.77+561015.2 is a dwarf AGN owning an intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH) with a mass of $M_{BH} = 3.6^{+5.9}_{-2.3} \times 10^5 M_{sun}$ and showing a rarely-seen two-component radio structure in its radio nucleus. To further probe their nature, i.e. the IMBH jet activity, we performed additional deep observations with the European VLBI Network (EVN) at 1.66 GHz and 4.99 GHz. We find the more diffuse emission regions and structure details. These new EVN imaging results allow us to reveal a two-sided jet morphology with a size up to about 150 mas (projected length $\sim$140 pc) and a radio luminosity of about $3\times10^{38}$ erg s$^{-1}$. The peak feature has an optically thin radio spectrum and thus more likely represents a relatively young ejecta instead of a jet base. The EVN study on SDSS J090613.77+561015.2 demonstrates the existence of episodic, relatively large-scale and powerful IMBH jet activity in dwarf AGNs. Moreover, we collected a small sample of VLBI-detected dwarf AGNs and investigated their connections with normal AGNs. We notice that these radio sources in the dwarf AGNs tend to have steep spectra and small linear sizes, and possibly represent ejecta from scaled-down episodic jet activity., Comment: Accepted for publication in MRNAS, 10 pages, 6 figures

We present and briefly discuss results of several studies of the source J2102+6015 with tentatively defined redshift z=4:575 which demonstrates unusual properties in imaging and astrometric VLBI observations. Its properties might be considered as indications on the supermassive black hole binary which can be considered as a so far rare example of a high-redshift source of known electromagnetic and, possibly, predictable gravitational wave emissions., Comment: To be published in the Proceedings of the IAU Symp. There are approximately 250 quasars discovered at redshift $z\geq6$, of which only a handful were detected in radio bands, and even fewer were imaged with the highest resolution very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) technique. Here we report the results of our dual-frequency observations with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) of two such recently discovered quasars, VIKING J231818.35$-$311346.3 at $z=6.44$ and FIRST J233153.20$+$112952.11 at $z=6.57$. Both extremely distant sources were imaged with VLBI for the first time. The radio properties of the former are consistent with those of quasars with young radio jets. The latter has an UV/optical spectrum characteristic of BL Lac objects, of which no others have been found beyond redshift 4 so far. Up to now, jet kinematic studies of radio quasars have barely reached beyond the redshift range at $z>3.5$. This significantly limits our knowledge of high-redshift jets, which can provide key information for understanding the jet nature and the growth of the black holes in the early Universe. In this paper, we selected 9 radio-loud quasars at $z>3.5$ which display milliarcsec-scale jet morphology. We provided evidence on the source nature by presenting high-resolution very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) images of the sample at 8.4~GHz frequency and making spectral index maps. We also consider Gaia optical positions that are available for 7 out of the 9 quasars, for a better identification of the jet components within the radio structures. We find that 6 sources can be classified as core--jet blazars. The remaining 3 objects are more likely young, jetted radio sources, compact symmetric objects. By including multi-epoch archival VLBI data, we also obtained jet component proper motions of the sample and estimated the jet kinematic and geometric parameters (Doppler factor, Lorentz factor, viewing angle). Our results show that at $z>3.5$, the jet apparent transverse speeds do not exceed 20 times the speed of light ($c$). This is consistent with earlier high-redshift quasar measurements in the literature and the tendency derived from low-redshift blazars that fast jet speeds ($>40\,c$) only occur at low redshifts. We draw the multimessenger picture of J1048+7143, a flat-spectrum radio quasar known to show quasi-periodic oscillations in the $\gamma$-ray regime. We generate the adaptively-binned Fermi Large Area Telescope light curve of this source above 168 MeV to find three major $\gamma$-ray flares of the source, such that all three flares consist of two-two sharp sub-flares. Based on radio interferometric imaging data taken with the Very Large Array, we find that the kpc-scale jet is directed towards west, while our analysis of $8.6$-GHz very long baseline interferometry data, mostly taken with the Very Long Baseline Array, revealed signatures of two pc-scale jets, one pointing towards east, one pointing towards south. We suggest that the misalignment of the kpc- and pc-scale jets is a revealing signature of jet precession. We also analyze the $5$-GHz total flux density curve of J1048+7143 taken with the Nanshan(Ur) and RATAN-600 single dish radio telescopes and find two complete radio flares, slightly lagging behind the $\gamma$-ray flares. We model the timing of $\gamma$-ray flares as signature of the spin-orbit precession in a supermassive black hole binary, and find that the binary could merge in the next $\sim 60-80$ years. We show that both the Pulsar Timing Arrays and the planned Laser Interferometer Space Antenna lack sensitivity and frequency coverage to detect the hypothetical supermassive black hole binary in J1048$+$7143. We argue that the identification of sources similar to J1048+7143 plays a key role to reveal periodic high-energy sources in the distant Universe., Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures, 3 tables. Ultra-high angular resolution in astronomy has always been an important vehicle for making fundamental discoveries. Recent results in direct imaging of the vicinity of the supermassive black hole in the nucleus of the radio galaxy M87 by the millimeter VLBI system Event Horizon Telescope and various pioneering results of the Space VLBI mission RadioAstron provided new momentum in high angular resolution astrophysics. In both mentioned cases, the angular resolution reached the values of about 10-20 microrcseconds. Further developments toward at least an order of magnitude "sharper" values are dictated by the needs of astrophysical studies and can only be achieved by placing millimeter and submillimeter wavelength interferometric systems in space. A concept of such the system, called Terahertz Exploration and Zooming-in for Astrophysics (THEZA), has been proposed in the framework of the ESA Call for White Papers for the Voayage 2050 long term plan in 2019. In the current paper we discuss several approaches for addressing technological challenges of the THEZA concept. In particular, we consider a novel configuration of a space-borne millimeter/sub-millimeter antenna which might resolve several bottlenecks in creating large precise mechanical structures. The paper also presents an overview of prospective space-qualified technologies of low-noise analogue front-end instrumentation for millimeter/sub-millimeter telescopes, data handling and processing. The paper briefly discusses approaches to the interferometric baseline state vector determination and synchronisation and heterodyning system. The current cosmological structure formation models predict that galaxies evolve through frequent mergers. During these events, the supermassive black holes (SMBHs) residing in the centres of the galaxies shrink to the central region, while losing energy via dynamical friction. Detection of SMBHs in these galaxy mergers is straightforward if they are actively accreting matter from their surroundings as active galactic nuclei (AGN). Currently, only a few dual AGN are known. One way to identify dual AGN candidates is by detecting double-peaked emission lines in their spectra. If these are broad spectral lines, it may indicate the existence of two broad line regions associated with two AGN. 2MASS J165939.7+183436 is a merging system, where the detected double-peaked broad emission lines can be explained by a dual AGN with an estimated separation of $0.085"$. Radio emission from this object was detected in the Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty-centimeters survey with a flux density of 2.6 mJy. We used the European Very Long Baseline Interferometer Network and the enhanced Multi-Element Remotely Linked Interferometer Network to image 2MASS J165939.7+183436 at 1.7 GHz. Astrometric positions of radio-emitting active galactic nuclei (AGNs) can be determined with sub-milliarcsec accuracy using very long baseline interferometry (VLBI). The usually small apparent proper motion of distant extragalactic targets allow us to realize the fundamental celestial reference frame with VLBI observations. However, long-term astrometric monitoring may reveal extreme changes in some AGN positions. Using new VLBI observations in 2018-2021, we show here that four extragalactic radio sources (3C48, CTA21, 1144+352, 1328+254) have a dramatic shift in their positions by 20-130 milliarcsec over two decades. For all four sources, the apparent positional shift is caused by their radio structure change., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

RX J1456.0+5048 is a prominent X-ray source detected by ROSAT. There is ~100-mJy level radio emission associated with the X-ray source. However, interferometric observations with increasing angular resolution revealed that three distinct objects located within 2 arcmin are responsible for the measured total flux density. Whether these radio sources lining up in the sky are physically associated or just seen close to each other in projection is not immediately clear. In fact, incorrect cross-identification of the X-ray, optical and radio sources can already be found in the literature. Here we summarise the current knowledge about this intriguing group of objects, where two of the three sources show compact radio emission detected with very long baseline interferometry (VLBI). We present a VLBI image of one of them for the first time, based on archival European VLBI Network (EVN) data taken at 5 GHz., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures. Less than $200$ radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGN) are known above redshift $4$. Around $40$ of them have been observed at milliarcsecond (mas) scale resolution with very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) technique. Some of them are unresolved, compact, relativistically beamed objects, blazars with jets pointing at small angles to the observer's line of sight. But there are also objects with no sign of relativistic beaming possibly having larger jet inclination angles. In a couple of cases, X-ray observations indicate the presence of relativistic beaming in contrary to the VLBI measurements made with the European VLBI Network (EVN). J1420$+$1205 is a prominent example, where our $30-100$ mas-scale enhanced Multi Element Remotely Linked Interferometer Network (e-MERLIN) radio observations revealed a rich structure reminiscent of a small radio galaxy. During galaxy merger events, the supermassive black holes in the center of the galaxies may form a pair of active galactic nuclei (AGN) with kpc-scale or even pc-scale separation. Recently, optical observations revealed a promising dual AGN candidate at the center of the galaxy SDSS J101022.95$+$141300.9 (hereafter J1010$+$1413). The presence of two distinct [O III]-emitting point sources with a projected separation of $\sim 430$ pc indicates a dual AGN system. To search for AGN-dominated radio emission originating from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) point sources, we carried out very long baseline interferometry observations. We resolved the radio structure of J1010$+$1413 and detected a single feature offset from the HST point sources and also from the Gaia optical position of the object. AT2019wey is a transient discovered by the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) survey in December of 2019. Follow-up optical, radio, and X-ray observations led to classification of this source as a Galactic black hole X-ray binary. We carried out one-epoch 6.7 GHz European VLBI (Very Long Baseline Interferometry) Network (EVN) and two-epoch multiple-frequency (1.6, 4.5, 6.7 GHz) Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations within a year after its discovery. These observations reveal a fading and flat-spectrum radio source with no discernible motion. These features suggest the detection of a compact jet. The source appears resolved at milliarcsecond scales, and the source angular size versus frequency trend is consistent with scatter broadening. This allows us to constrain the lower limit of the source distance to 6 kpc, if the scattering medium is in a Galactic spiral arm. For a source location larger than 3 kpc, the estimated upper limit of the peculiar velocity, relative to the local standard of rest, suggests the asymmetric natal kick may have occurred during the black hole formation stage., Comment: pages 9, 4 figures, A&A accepted for publication

Jets of high-redshift active galactic nuclei (AGNs) can be used to directly probe the activity of the black holes in the early Universe. Radio sources with jets misaligned with respect to the line of sight are expected to dominate the high-redshift AGN population. In this paper, we present the high-resolution imaging results of a z=4.57 AGN J2102+6015 by analyzing its multi-epoch dual-frequency very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) data. The 8.4-GHz VLBI images reveal two major features along the east-west direction separated by $\sim$ 10 milli-arcsec (mas). From the spectral index map, both features show flat/inverted spectra. The separation between the two features remains almost unchanged over an observation period of $\sim$ 13 years, placing an upper limit of the separation speed as about 0.04 mas year$^{-1}$. Previous studies have classified the source as a GHz-peaked spectrum quasar. Our results indicate that J2102+6015 is most likely a young, compact symmetric object rather than a blazar-type core-jet source., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, accepted by MNRAS

The coevolution of galaxies and their central supermassive black holes is a subject of intense research. A class of objects, the dust-obscured galaxies (DOGs) are particularly interesting in this respect as they are thought to represent a short evolutionary phase when violent star formation activity in the host galaxy may coexist with matter accretion onto the black hole powering the active nucleus. Here we investigate different types of DOGs classified by their mid-infrared spectral energy distributions to reveal whether they can be distinguished by their arcsec-scale radio properties. Radio emission is unaffected by dust obscuration and may originate from both star formation and an active nucleus. We analyse a large sample of 661 DOGs complied from the literature and find that only a small fraction of them ($\sim 2$ per cent) are detected with flux densities exceeding $\sim 1$ mJy in the Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty-Centimeters (FIRST) survey. These radio-detected objects are almost exclusively `power-law' DOGs. Stacking analysis of the FIRST image cutouts centred on the positions of individually radio-undetected sources suggests that weak radio emission is present in `power-law' DOGs. PKS\,1351$-$018 at a redshift of $z=3.71$ is one of the most luminous, steady synchrotron sources with a luminosity $> 10^{47}$\,erg~s$^{-1}$. The synchrotron luminosity does not seem to vary by more than $\sim 25\%$ over 35 years. In order to appreciate this remarkable behavior, if it were at $z=0.5$, it would have a flux density at 15 GHz in a range of $110 - 137$\,Jy over 11 yrs. In spite of this steady behavior, two strong $\gamma$-ray flares $\lesssim 10^{49}$\,erg~s$^{-1}$ were detected in 2011 and 2016. There is blazar-like behavior coexisting with the steady behavior. This study is aimed at elucidating the dual nature of this source. We find that the radio source is extremely compact with a bright core and a steep spectrum secondary component, 12\,mas away, that appears to be constant in position and flux density in six epochs from 1995 to 2018. We estimate that a jet with a time averaged power of $(5.2 \pm 3.2) \times 10^{45}$\,erg~s$^{-1}$ terminates in this lobe that is advancing $\gtrsim 0.9 c$ at a deprojected distance of $1-3$\,kpc from the central engine. This is the rare case of a young ($\sim 6000$\,yr), very powerful radio source that is viewed a few degrees from the jet axis. We find evidence of a high velocity (4000\,km~s$^{-1}$), high ionization wind emanating form a luminous quasar. The young radio jet appears to experience modest bending as it navigates through the intense quasar environment., Comment: To appear in ApJ

The high-redshift quasar PMN J0909+0354 ($z=3.288$) is known to have a pc-scale compact jet structure, based on global 5-GHz very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations performed in 1992. Its kpc-scale structure was studied with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) in the radio and the Chandra space telescope in X-rays. Apart from the north-northwestern jet component seen in both the VLA and Chandra images at $2.3''$ separation from the core, there is another X-ray feature at $6.48''$ in the northeastern (NE) direction. To uncover more details and possibly structural changes in the inner jet, we conducted new observations at 5 GHz using the European VLBI Network (EVN) in 2019. These data confirm the northward direction of the one-sided inner jet already suspected from the 1992 observations. A compact core and multiple jet components were identified that can be traced up to $\sim0.25$ kpc projected distance towards the north, while the structure becomes more and more diffuse. A comparison with arcsec-resolution imaging with the VLA shows that the radio jet bends by $\sim30^\circ$ between the two scales. The direction of the pc-scale jet as well as the faint optical counterpart found for the newly-detected X-ray point source (NE) favors the nature of the latter as a background or foreground object in the field of view. However, the extended ($\sim160$ kpc) emission around the positions of the quasar core and NE detected by the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) in the mid-infrared might suggest physical interaction of the two objects., Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present high-resolution radio interferometric imaging observations of the radio source NVSS J182659+343113 (hereafter J1826+3431), the proposed radio counterpart of the ${\gamma}$-ray source, 3EG J1824+3441 detected by the Energetic Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET) on board the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory satellite. We analyzed eight epochs of archival multi-frequency very long baseline interferometry data. We imaged the asymmetric core-jet structure of the source, and detected apparent superluminal motion in the jet. At the highest observing frequency, 15.3 GHz, the core shows high brightness temperature indicating Doppler boosting. Additionally, the radio features undergo substantial flux density variability. These findings strengthen the previous claim of the association of the blazar J1826+3431 with the possible ${\gamma}$-ray source, 3EG J1824+3441.

In large-scale optical spectroscopic surveys, there are many objects found to have multiple redshift measurements due to the weakness of their emission lines and the different automatic identification algorithms used. These include some suspicious high-redshift (z >= 5) active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Here we present a method for inspecting the high-redshift identification of such sources provided that they are radio-loud and have very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) imaging observations of their milli-arcsec (mas) scale jet structure available at multiple epochs. The method is based on the determination of jet component proper motions, and the fact that the combination of jet physics (the observed maximal values of the bulk Lorentz factor) and cosmology (the time dilation of observed phenomena in the early Universe) constrain the possible values of apparent proper motions. As an example, we present the case of the quasar J2346+0705 that was reported with two different redshifts, $z_{1} = 5.063$ and $z_{2} = 0.171$, in the literature. We measured the apparent proper motions ($\mu$) of three components identified in its radio jet by utilizing VLBI data taken from 2014 to 2018. We obtained $\mu_{J1} = 0.334 \pm 0.099$ mas yr$^{-1}$, $\mu_{J2} = 0.116 \pm 0.029$ mas yr$^{-1}$, and $\mu_{J3} = 0.060 \pm 0.005$ mas yr$^{-1}$. The maximal proper motion is converted to an apparent transverse speed of $\beta_{\rm app} = 41.2\pm12.2\,c$. if the source is at redshift 5.063. This value exceeds the blazar jet speeds known to date. This and other arguments suggest that J2346+0705 is hosted by a low-redshift galaxy. Our method may be applicable for other high-redshift AGN candidates lacking unambiguous spectroscopic redshift determination or having photometric redshift estimates only, but showing prominent radio jets allowing for VLBI measurements of fast jet proper motions., Comment: accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society

This white paper describes the science case for Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) and provides suggestions towards upgrade paths for the European VLBI Network (EVN). The EVN is a distributed long-baseline radio interferometric array, that operates at the very forefront of astronomical research. Recent results, together with the new science possibilities outlined in this vision document, demonstrate the EVN's potential to generate new and exciting results that will transform our view of the cosmos. Together with e-MERLIN, the EVN provides a range of baseline lengths that permit unique studies of faint radio sources to be made over a wide range of spatial scales. The science cases are reviewed in six chapters that cover the following broad areas: cosmology, galaxy formation and evolution, innermost regions of active galactic nuclei, explosive phenomena and transients, stars and stellar masers in the Milky Way, celestial reference frames and space applications. The document concludes with identifying the synergies with other radio, as well as multi-band/multi-messenger instruments, and provide the recommendations for future improvements. The quasar J1918+4937 was recently suggested to harbour a milliparsec-separation binary supermassive black hole (SMBH), based upon modeling the narrow spike in its high-cadence Kepler optical light curve. Known binary SMBHs are extremely rare, and the tight constraints on the physical and geometric parameters of this object are unique. The high-resolution radio images of J1918+4937 obtained with very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) indicate a rich one-sided jet structure extending to 80 milliarcseconds. Here we analyse simultaneously-made sensitive 1.7- and 5-GHz archive VLBI images as well as snapshot 8.4/8.7-GHz VLBI images of J1918+4937, and show that the appearance of the wiggled jet is consistent with the binary scenario. We develop a jet structural model that handles eccentric orbits. By applying this model to the measured VLBI component positions, we constrain the inclination of the radio jet, as well as the spin angle of the jet emitter SMBH. We find the jet morphological model is consistent with the optical and radio data, and that the secondary SMBH is most likely the jetted one in the system. Furthermore, the decade-long 15-GHz radio flux density monitoring data available for J1918+4937 are compatible with a gradual overall decrease in the the total flux density caused by a slow secular change of the jet inclination due to the spin-orbit precession. Many low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (AGNs) contain a compact radio core which can be observed with high angular resolution using very long baseline interferometry (VLBI). Combining arcsec-scale structural information with milliarcsec-resolution VLBI imaging is a useful way to characterise the objects and to find compact cores on parsec scales. VLBI imaging could also be employed to look for dual AGNs when the sources show kpc-scale double symmetric structure with flat or inverted radio spectra. We observed five such sources at redshifts 0.36 < z < 0.58 taken from an optically selected sample of Type 2 quasars with the European VLBI Network (EVN) at 1.7 and 5 GHz. Out of the five sources, only one (SDSS J1026-0042) shows a confidently detected compact VLBI core at both frequencies. The other four sources are marginally detected at 1.7 GHz only, indicating resolved-out radio structure and steep spectra. Using first-epoch data from the ongoing Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array Sky Survey, we confirm that indeed all four of these sources have steep radio spectra on arcsec scale, contrary to the inverted spectra reported earlier in the literature. However, the VLBI-detected source, SDSS J1026-0042, has a flat integrated spectrum. The population of intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs) in nearby dwarf galaxies plays an important "ground truth" role in exploring black hole formation and growth in the early Universe. In the dwarf elliptical galaxy SDSS J090613.77+561015.2 (z=0.0465), an accreting IMBH has been revealed by optical and X-ray observations. Aiming to search for possible radio core and jet associated with the IMBH, we carried out very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations with the European VLBI Network (EVN) at 1.66 GHz. Our imaging results show that there are two 1-mJy components with a separation of about 52 mas (projected distance 47 pc) and the more compact component is located within the 1-sigma error circle of the optical centroid from available Gaia astrometry. Based on their positions, elongated structures and relatively high brightness temperatures, as well as the absence of star-forming activity in the host galaxy, we argue that the radio morphology originates from the jet activity powered by the central IMBH. The existence of the large-scale jet implies that violent jet activity might occur in the early epochs of black hole growth and thus help to regulate the co-evolution of black holes and galaxies., Comment: Accepted for publication as a Letter in MNRAS

The quest for binary and dual supermassive black holes (SMBHs) at the dawn of the multi-messenger era is compelling. Detecting dual active galactic nuclei (AGN) -- active SMBHs at projected separations larger than several parsecs -- and binary AGN -- probing the scale where SMBHs are bound in a Keplerian binary -- is an observational challenge. The study of AGN pairs (either dual or binary) also represents an overarching theoretical problem in cosmology and astrophysics. The AGN triggering calls for detailed knowledge of the hydrodynamical conditions of gas in the imminent surroundings of the SMBHs and, at the same time, their duality calls for detailed knowledge on how galaxies assemble through major and minor mergers and grow fed by matter along the filaments of the cosmic web. This review describes the techniques used across the electromagnetic spectrum to detect dual and binary AGN candidates and proposes new avenues for their search. The current observational status is compared with the state-of-the-art numerical simulations and models for formation of dual and binary AGN. Binary SMBHs are among the loudest sources of gravitational waves (GWs) in the Universe. The search for a background of GWs at nHz frequencies from inspiralling SMBHs at low redshifts, and the direct detection of signals from their coalescence by the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna in the next decade, make this a theme of major interest for multi-messenger astrophysics. Blazars are a sub-class of quasars with Doppler boosted jets oriented close to the line of sight, and thus efficient probes of supermassive black hole growth and their environment, especially at high redshifts. Here we report on Very Long Baseline Interferometry observations of a blazar J0906+6930 at z = 5.47, which enabled the detection of polarised emission and measurement of jet proper motion at parsec scales. The observations suggest a less powerful jet compared with the general blazar population, including lower proper motion and bulk Lorentz factor. This coupled with a previously inferred high accretion rate indicate a transition from an accretion radiative power to a jet mechanical power based transfer of energy and momentum to the surrounding gas.While alternative scenarios could not be fully ruled out, our results indicate a possibly nascent jet embedded in and interacting with a dense medium resulting in a jet bending., Comment: 3 figures, 2 supplementary figures

High-resolution observations of high-redshift ($z>4$) radio quasars offer a unique insight into jet kinematics at early cosmological epochs, as well as constraints on cosmological model parameters. Due to the general weakness of extremely distant objects and the apparently slow structural changes caused by cosmological time dilation, only a couple of high-redshift quasars have been studied with parsec-scale resolutions, and with limited number of observing epochs. Here we report on very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations of a high-redshift blazar J1430+4204 ($z=4.72$) in the 8 GHz frequency band at five different epochs spanning 22 years. The source shows a compact core--jet structure with two jet components being identified within 3 milli-arcsecond (mas) scale. The long time span and multiple-epoch data allow for the kinematic studies of the jet components. That results in a jet proper motion of $\mu {\rm (J1)}$ = 0.017$\pm$0.002~mas\,yr$^{-1}$ and $\mu({\rm J2})$=0.156$\pm$0.015~mas\,yr$^{-1}$, respectively. For the fastest-moving outer jet component J2, the corresponding apparent transverse speed is $19.5 \pm 1.9 \,c$. The inferred bulk jet Lorentz factor $\Gamma = 14.6 \pm 3.8$ and viewing angle $\theta = 2.2^{\circ} \pm 1.6^{\circ}$ indicate highly relativistic beaming. The Lorentz factor and apparent proper motion are the highest measured to date among the $z>4$ jetted radio sources, while the jet kinematics is still consistent with the cosmological interpretation of quasar redshifts., Comment: Science Bulletin, submitted

We applied image stacking on empty-field Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty-Centimeters (FIRST) survey maps centred on optically identified high-redshift quasars at $z\geq4$ to uncover the hidden $\mu$Jy radio emission in these active galactic nuclei (AGN). The median stacking procedure for the full sample of $2229$ optically identified AGN uncovered an unresolved point source with an integrated flux density of 52$~\mu$Jy, with a signal-to-noise ratio $\sim10$. We co-added the individual image centre pixels to estimate the characteristic monochromatic radio power at $1.4~$GHz considering various values for the radio spectral index, revealing a radio population with $P_\mathrm{1.4GHz}\sim10^{24}~$W Hz$^{-1}$. Assuming that the entire radio emission originates from star-forming (SF) activity in the nuclear region of the host galaxy, we obtained an upper limit on the characteristic star formation rate, $\sim4200~$M$_\odot~$yr$^{-1}$. The angular resolution of FIRST images is insufficient to distinguish between the SF and AGN origin of radio emission at these redshifts. However, a comparison with properties of individual sources from the literature indicates that a mixed nature is likely. Future very long baseline interferometry radio observations and ultra-deep Square Kilometre Array surveys are expected to be sensitive enough to detect and resolve the central $1-10~$kpc region in the host galaxies, and thus discriminate between SF and AGN related emission., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

In the hierarchical structure formation model, galaxies grow through various merging events. Numerical simulations indicate that the mergers can enhance the activity of the central supermassive black holes in the galaxies. Pfeifle et al. (2019a) identified a system of three interacting galaxies, J0849$+$1114, and provided multiwavelength evidence of all three galaxies containing active galactic nuclei. The system has substantial radio emission, and with high-resolution radio interferometric observation we aimed to investigate its origin, whether it is related to star formation or to one or more of the active galactic nuclei in the system. We performed high-resolution continuum observation of J0849$+$1114 with the European Very Long Baseline Interferometry Network at $1.7$ GHz. We detected one compact radio emitting source at the position of the easternmost nucleus. Its high brightness temperature and radio power indicate that the radio emission originates from a radio-emitting active galactic nucleus. This paper presents the ESA Voyage 2050 White Paper for a concept of TeraHertz Exploration and Zooming-in for Astrophysics (THEZA). It addresses the science case and some implementation issues of a space-borne radio interferometric system for ultra-sharp imaging of celestial radio sources at the level of angular resolution down to (sub-) microarcseconds. THEZA focuses at millimetre and sub-millimetre wavelengths (frequencies above $\sim$300~GHz), but allows for science operations at longer wavelengths too. The THEZA concept science rationale is focused on the physics of spacetime in the vicinity of supermassive black holes as the leading science driver. The main aim of the concept is to facilitate a major leap by providing researchers with orders of magnitude improvements in the resolution and dynamic range in direct imaging studies of the most exotic objects in the Universe, black holes. The concept will open up a sizeable range of hitherto unreachable parameters of observational astrophysics. It unifies two major lines of development of space-borne radio astronomy of the past decades: Space VLBI (Very Long Baseline Interferometry) and mm- and sub-mm astrophysical studies with "single dish" instruments. It also builds upon the recent success of the Earth-based Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) -- the first-ever direct image of a shadow of the super-massive black hole in the centre of the galaxy M87. Recently, Rakshit et al. (2018) reported the discovery of SDSS J103024.95$+$551622.7, a radio-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy having a $\sim 100$ kpc scale double-lobed radio structure. Here we analyse archival radio interferometric imaging data taken with the Very Large Array (VLA) at 5 GHz, and with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) at 4.3 and 7.6 GHz. Two hotspots and a compact core are detected with the VLA at arcsec scale, while a single milliarcsec-scale compact radio core is seen with the highest resolution VLBA observations. The Fermi Large Area Telescope did not detect $\gamma$-ray emission at the position of this source. In the mid-infrared, the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer satellite light curve, covering more than 7 years and including the most recent data points, hints on flux density variability at 3.4 $\mu$m. Previous spectral energy distribution modeling based on XMM-Newton X-ray observation of the classical double-lobed radio galaxy 3C 411 left the possibility open for the presence of a blazar-like core. We investigated this scenario by characterizing the radio brightness distribution in the inner ~10-pc region of the source. We applied the very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) technique at four different frequencies from 1.7 to 7.6 GHz. We analyzed archival data from the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) taken in 2014, and data from the European VLBI Network (EVN) obtained in 2017. The VLBI images reveal pc-scale extended structure in the core of 3C 411 that can be modeled with multiple jet components. The measured core brightness temperatures indicate no Doppler enhancement that would be expected from a blazar jet pointing close to the line of sight. While there is no blazar-type core in 3C 411, we found indication of flux density variability. The search and study of close pairs of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) is important in the study of galaxy mergers which can possibly trigger active galactic nucleus (AGN) activity, and in the context of their evolution into the gravitational wave emitting regime. The quasar SDSS~J1048+0055 was identified as a SMBH binary candidate based on the observed double-peaked \OIII$\lambda\lambda$4959,5007 emission lines and two distinct radio components separated by $\sim 20$~pc \citep{2004ApJ...604L..33Z}. To ascertain the binary nature of this source, we analyzed multi-frequency, multi-epoch very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) data to investigate its pc-scale radio properties. The source shows double components with the western feature being brighter than the eastern one. This brighter component has a brightness temperature of $\sim 10^{10}$~K, spectral index of $\alpha = -0.09 \pm 0.09$ (flat) and is indicative of mildly relativistic beaming. In contrast, the faint component has a lower brightness temperature of $\sim 10^{8-9}$~K and steep spectrum. These clues are consistent with a core--jet structure, moreover, the apparent separation speed between the two components is much higher than the expected orbital motion in a binary SMBH. Thus the present study excludes the association of the two VLBI components with the cores of a SMBH binary, although the SMBH binary possibility (e.g., a pair of radio-loud and radio-quiet AGNs) is not fully ruled out. In the single active galactic nucleus (AGN) scenario, the double-peaked optical emission lines can originate from the jet interacting with the narrow-line region as indicated by a change in the jet direction at $\sim$ 140 pc., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. BL Lac objects are known to have compact jets inclined to our line of sight at a small angle, showing prominent radio emission. Two radio-weak BL Lac candidates with no counterparts in current radio surveys were recently reported by Massaro et al. (2017). Both sources were selected as candidate low-energy counterparts of unassociated Fermi {\gamma}-ray sources. We carried out very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations with the European VLBI Network (EVN) at 5 GHz to explore their radio properties at milli-arcsecond (mas) scale. One target, J1410+7405, is clearly detected with the EVN. Its measured 5-GHz flux density, 2.4 mJy, is consistent with recent interferometric measurements with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array, suggesting that the radio emission is confined to the inner < ~10 mas region. J1410+7405 is therefore identified as a radio-loud jetted active galactic nucleus, and its brightness temperature exceeds ~10^9 K. Its properties are similar to those of other {\gamma}-ray detected BL Lac objects. On the other hand, the second target, J0644+6031, remains undetected with the EVN with a 6-{\sigma} brightness upper limit of 0.12 mJy/beam. Dual active galactic nuclei (DAGN) and supermassive black hole binaries (SMBHBs) at kpc and pc-scale separations, respectively, are expected during stages of galaxy merger and evolution. Their observational identification can address a range of areas of current astrophysics frontiers including the final parsec problem and their contribution towards the emission of low-frequency gravitational waves. This has however been difficult to achieve with current spectroscopy and time domain strategies. Very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) as a method of directly imaging radio structures with milli-arcsecond (mas) and sub-mas resolutions is introduced as a possible means of detecting DAGN and SMBHBs. We motivate its usage with expected observational signatures and cite some studies from literature to illustrate its current status, and present an updated list of candidates imaged with high-resolution radio observations. We then recall some shortcomings of the method with possible solutions and discuss future directions, relevant to large surveys with the upcoming Square Kilometer Array and future space VLBI missions., Comment: 13 pages, 2 table; Radio Science (accepted)

We present a multi-calibrator solution, i.e. MultiView, to achieve accurate astrometry on the level of the thermal noise at low VLBI frequencies dominated by ionospheric residuals. We demonstrate on L-band VLBA observations how MultiView provides superior astrometry to conventional phase referencing techniques (Rioja et al. 2017). We also introduce a new trial method to detect antenna based systematic errors in the observations (Orosz et al. 2017}. Radio-loud high-redshift quasars (HRQs), although only a few of them are known to date, are crucial for the studies of the growth of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) and the evolution of active galactic nuclei (AGN) at early cosmological epochs. Radio jets offer direct evidence of SMBHs, and their radio structures can be studied with the highest angular resolution using Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI). Here we report on the observations of three HRQs (J0131-0321, J0906+6930, J1026+2542) at z>5 using the Korean VLBI Network and VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry Arrays (together known as KaVA) with the purpose of studying their pc-scale jet properties. The observations were carried out at 22 and 43 GHz in 2016 January among the first-batch open-use experiments of KaVA. The quasar J0906+6930 was detected at 22 GHz but not at 43 GHz. The other two sources were not detected and upper limits to their compact radio emission are given. Archival VLBI imaging data and single-dish 15-GHz monitoring light curve of J0906+6930 were also acquired as complementary information. J0906+6930 shows a moderate-level variability at 15 GHz. The radio image is characterized by a core-jet structure with a total detectable size of ~5 pc in projection. The brightness temperature, 1.9x10^{11} K, indicates relativistic beaming of the jet. The radio properties of J0906+6930 are consistent with a blazar. High-redshift quasars are important to study galaxy and active galactic nuclei (AGN) evolution, test cosmological models, and study supermassive black hole growth. Optical searches for high-redshift sources have been very successful, but radio searches are not hampered by dust obscuration and should be more effective at finding sources at even higher redshifts. Identifying high-redshift sources based on radio data is, however, not trivial. Here we report on new multi-frequency Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) observations of eight z>4.5 sources previously studied at high angular resolution with very long baseline interferometry (VLBI). Combining these observations with those from the literature, we construct broad-band radio spectra of all 30 z>4.5 sources that have been observed with VLBI. In the sample we found flat, steep and peaked spectra in approximately equal proportions. Despite several selection effects, we conclude that the z>4.5 VLBI (and likely also non-VLBI) sources have diverse spectra and that only about a quarter of the sources in the sample have flat spectra. Previously, the majority of high-redshift radio sources were identified based on their ultra-steep spectra (USS). Recently a new method has been proposed to identify these objects based on their megahertz-peaked spectra (MPS). Neither method would have identified more than 18% of the high-redshift sources in this sample. The observation and imaging of hundreds or thousands of radio sources with the technique of very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) is a computationally intensive task. However, these surveys allow us to conduct statistical investigations of large source samples, and also to discover new phenomena or types of objects. The field of view of these high-resolution VLBI imaging observations is typically a few arcseconds at cm wavelengths. For practical reasons, often a much smaller fraction of the field, the central region is imaged only. With an automated process we imaged the ~1.5-arcsec radius fields around more than 1000 radio sources, and found a variety of extended radio structures. The arrival of the Square Kilometer Array (SKA) will revitalise all aspects of Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) astronomy at the lower frequencies. In the last decade there have been huge strides towards routinely achieving high precision VLBI astrometry at frequencies dominated by the tropospheric contributions, most notably at 22GHz, using advanced phase referencing techniques. Nevertheless to increase the capability for high precision astrometric measurements at low radio frequencies (<8GHz) an effective calibration strategy of the systematic ionospheric propagation effects that is widely applicable is required. Observations at low frequencies are dominated by distinct direction dependent ionospheric propagation errors, which place a very tight limit on the angular separation of a suitable phase referencing calibrator. The MultiView technique holds the key to the compensation of atmospheric spatial-structure errors, by using observations of multiple calibrators and 2-D interpolation. In this paper we present the first demonstration of the power of MultiView using three calibrators, several degrees from the target, along with a comparative study of the astrometric accuracy between MultiView and phase-referencing techniques. MultiView calibration provides an order of magnitude improvement in astrometry with respect to conventional phase referencing, achieving ca. 100 micro-arcseconds astrometry errors in a single epoch of observations, effectively reaching the thermal noise limit. MultiView will achieve its full potential with the enhanced sensitivity and multibeam capabilities of SKA and the pathfinders, which will enable simultaneous observations of the target and calibrators. Our demonstration indicates that the 10 micro-arcseconds goal of astrometry at ~1.6GHz using VLBI with SKA is feasible using the MultiView technique., Comment: Submitted for Publication in AJ (Nov. 4, 2016)
