We present observations with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph onboard the Hubble Space Telescope of nine low-mass star-forming galaxies at redshifts, z, in the range 0.3179-0.4524, with stellar masses Mstar < 10^8 M and veruny high specific star-formation rates sSFR~150-630 Gyr^{-1}, aiming to study the dependence of leaking Lyman continuum (LyC) emission on stellar mass and some other characteristics of the galaxy. We detect LyC emission in four out of nine galaxies with escape fractions, fesc(LyC), in the range of 11-35 per cent, and establish upper limits for fesc(LyC) in the remaining five galaxies. We observe a narrow Ly-alpha emission line with two peaks in seven galaxies and likely more complex Ly-alpha profiles in the two remaining galaxies. The velocity separation between the peaks Vsep varies in the range from ~229 km/s to ~512 km/s. Our additional data on low-mass galaxies confirm and strengthen the tight anti-correlation between fesc(LyC) and Vsep found for previous low-redshift galaxy samples with higher stellar masses. Vsep remains the best indirect indicator of LyC leakage. It is better than O32 on which fesc(LyC) depends weakly, with a large scatter. We compare the relations among various integrated characteristics of ~25,000 low-redshift (z<1.0) compact star-forming galaxies (CSFGs) from Data Release 16 (DR16) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and of high-redshift (z>1.5) star-forming galaxies (SFGs) with respect to oxygen abundances, stellar masses M*, far-UV absolute magnitudes M(FUV), star-formation rates SFR and specific star-formation rates sSFR, Lyman-continuum photon production efficiencies (xi_ion), UV continuum slopes \beta, [OIII]5007/[OII]3727 and [NeIII]3868/[OII]3727 ratios, and emission-line equivalent widths EW([OII]3727), EW([OIII]5007), and EW(H\alpha). We find that the relations for low-z CSFGs with high equivalent widths of the H\beta emission line, EW(H\beta)>100A, and high-z SFGs are very similar, implying close physical properties in these two categories of galaxies. Thus, CSFGs are likely excellent proxies for the SFGs in the high-z Universe. They also extend to galaxies with lower stellar masses, down to ~10^6 Msun, and to absolute FUV magnitudes as faint as -14 mag. Thanks to their proximity, CSFGs can be studied in much greater detail than distant SFGs. Therefore, the relations between the integrated characteristics of the large sample of CSFGs studied here can prove very useful for our understanding of high-z dwarf galaxies in future observations with large ground-based and space telescopes., Comment: 20 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

We present observations with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph onboard the Hubble Space Telescope of eight compact star-forming galaxies at redshifts z=0.02811-0.06540, with low oxygen abundances 12+log(O/H)=7.43-7.82 and extremely high emission-line flux ratios O32=[OIII]5007/[OII]3727~22-39, aiming to study the properties of Ly-alpha emission in such conditions. We find a diversity in Ly-alpha properties. In five galaxies Ly-alpha emission line is strong, with equivalent width (EW) in the range 45-190A. In the remaining galaxies, weak Ly-alpha emission with EW(Ly-alpha)~2-7A is superposed on a broad Ly-alpha absorption line, indicating a high neutral hydrogen column density N(HI)~(1-3)x10^21 cm^-2. We examine the relation between the Ly-alpha escape fraction fesc(Ly-alpha) and the Lyman continuum escape fraction fesc(LyC), using direct measures of the latter in eleven low-redshift LyC leakers, to verify whether fesc(Ly-alpha) can be an indirect measure of escaping LyC radiation. The usefulness of O32, of the Ly-alpha equivalent width EW(Ly-alpha) and of the Ly-alpha peak separation Vsep as indirect indicators of Ly-alpha leakage is also discussed. It is shown that there is no correlation between O32 and fesc(Ly-alpha). We find an increase of fesc(Ly-alpha) with increasing EW(Ly-alpha) for EW(Ly-alpha)<100A, but for higher EW(Ly-alpha)>150A the fesc(Ly-alpha) is nearly constant attaining the value of ~0.25. We find an anticorrelation between fesc(Ly-alpha) and Vsep, though not as tight as the one found earlier between fesc(LyC) and Vsep. A large sample of MgII emitting star-forming galaxies with low metallicity [O/H] = log(O/H)-log(O/H)sun between -0.2 and -1.2 dex is constructed from Data Release 14 of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We selected 4189 galaxies with MgII 2797, 2803 emission lines in the redshift range z~0.3-1.0 or 35% of the total Sloan Digital Sky Survey star-forming sample with redshift z>0.3. We study the dependence of the magnesium-to-oxygen and magnesium-to-neon abundance ratios on metallicity. Extrapolating this dependence to [Mg/Ne]=0 and to solar metallicity we derive a magnesium depletion of [Mg/Ne]~-0.4 (at solar metallicity). We prefer neon instead of oxygen to evaluate the magnesium depletion in the interstellar medium because neon is a noble gas and is not incorporated into dust, contrary to oxygen. Thus, we find that more massive and more metal abundant galaxies have higher magnesium depletion. The global parameters of our sample, such as the mass of the stellar population and star formation rate, are compared with previously obtained results from the literature. These results confirm that MgII emission has a nebular origin. Our data for interstellar magnesium-to-oxygen abundance ratios relative to the solar value are in good agreement with similar measurements made for Galactic stars, for giant stars in the Milky Way satellite dwarf galaxies, and with low-metallicity damped Lyman-alpha systems., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

We present a sample of low-redshift (z<0.133) candidates for extremely low-metallicity star-forming galaxies with oxygen abundances 12+logO/H<7.4 selected from the Data Release 14 (DR14) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Three methods are used to derive their oxygen abundances. Among these methods two are based on strong [OII]3727, [OIII]4959, and [OIII]5007 emission lines, which we call strong-line and semi-empirical methods. These were applied for all galaxies. We have developed one of these methods, the strong-line method, in this paper. This method is specifically focused on the accurate determination of metallicity in extremely low-metallicity galaxies and may not be used at higher metallicities with12+logO/H>7.5. The third, the direct Te method, was applied for galaxies with detected [OIII]4363 emission lines. All three methods give consistent abundances and can be used in combination or separately for selection of lowest-metallicity candidates. However, the strong-line method is preferable for spectra with a poorly detected or undetected [OIII]4363 emission line. We present observations with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph onboard the Hubble Space Telescope of five star-forming galaxies at redshifts z in the range 0.2993-0.4317 and with high emission-line flux ratios O32=[OIII]5007/[OII]3727 ~ 8-27 aiming to detect the Lyman continuum (LyC) emission. We detect LyC emission in all galaxies with the escape fractions fesc(LyC) in a range of 2-72 per cent. A narrow Ly-alpha emission line with two peaks in four galaxies and with three peaks in one object is seen in medium-resolution COS spectra with a velocity separation between the peaks Vsep varying from ~153 km/s to ~345 km/s. We find a general increase of the LyC escape fraction with increasing O32 and decreasing stellar mass M*, but with a large scatter of fesc(LyC). A tight anti-correlation is found between fesc(LyC) and Vsep making Vsep a good parameter for the indirect determination of the LyC escape fraction. We report the detection of the Lyman continuum (LyC) radiation of the compact star-forming galaxy (SFG) J1154+2443 observed with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) onboard the Hubble Space Telescope. This galaxy, at a redshift of z=0.3690, is characterized by a high emission-line flux ratio O32=[OIII]5007/[OII]3727=11.5. The escape fraction of the LyC radiation fesc(LyC) in this galaxy is 46 per cent, the highest value found so far in low-redshift SFGs and one of the highest values found in galaxies at any redshift. The narrow double-peaked Lya emission line is detected in the spectrum of J1154+2443 with a separation between the peaks Vsep of 199 km/s, one of the lowest known for Lya-emitting galaxies, implying a high fesc(Lya). Comparing the extinction-corrected Lya/Hb flux ratio with the case B value we find fesc(Lya) = 98 per cent. Our observations, combined with previous detections in the literature, reveal an increase of O32 with increasing fesc(LyC). We also find a tight anticorrelation between fesc(LyC) and Vsep. The surface brightness profile derived from the COS acquisition image reveals a bright star-forming region in the centre and an exponential disc in the outskirts with a disc scale length alpha=1.09 kpc. We present a spectroscopic study of metal-deficient dwarf galaxy candidates, selected from the SDSS DR12. The oxygen abundances were derived using the direct method in galaxies with the electron temperature-sensitive emission line [OIII]4363A measured with an accuracy better than 30%. The oxygen abundances for the remaining galaxies with larger uncertainties of the [OIII]4363A line fluxes were calculated using a strong-line semi-empirical method by Izotov and Thuan. The resulting sample consists of 287 low-metallicity candidates with oxygen abundances below 12+logO/H=7.65 including 23 extremely metal-deficient (XMD) candidates with 12+log O/H<7.35. Ten out of sixteen XMDs known so far (or ~60%) have been discovered by our team using the direct method. Three XMDs were found in the present study. We study relations between global parameters of low-metallicity galaxies, including absolute optical magnitudes, Hbeta luminosities (or equivalently star formation rates), stellar masses, mid-infrared colours, and oxygen abundances. Low-metallicity and XMD galaxies strongly deviate to lower metallicities in L-Z, L(Hbeta)-Z and Mstar-Z diagrams than in relations obtained for large samples of low-redshift, star-forming galaxies with non-restricted metallicities. These less chemically evolved galaxies with stellar masses ~10^6-10^8Msun, Hbeta luminosities ~10^38-10^41 erg/s, SFR~0.01-1.0Msun/yr, and sSFR~50 Gyr^-1 have physical conditions which may be characteristic of high-redshift low-mass star-forming galaxies which are still awaiting discovery., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

We study relations between global characteristics of low-redshift (0 < z < 1) compact star-forming galaxies, including absolute optical magnitudes, Hbeta emission-line luminosities (or equivalently star-formation rates), stellar masses, and oxygen abundances. The sample consists of 5182 galaxies with high-excitation HII regions selected from the SDSS DR7 and SDSS/BOSS DR10 surveys adopting a criterion [OIII]4959/Hbeta > 1. These data were combined with the corresponding data for high-redshift (2 < z < 3) star-forming galaxies. We find that in all diagrams low-z and high-z star-forming galaxies are closely related indicating a very weak dependence of metallicity on stellar mass, redshift, and star-formation rate. This finding argues in favour of the universal character of the global relations for compact star-forming galaxies with high-excitation HII regions over redshifts 0 < z < 3., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present a spectroscopic study of eight extremely low-metallicity candidate emission-line galaxies with oxygen abundances possibly below 12 +log O/H = 7.35. These galaxies were selected from Data Release 10 of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey/Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (SDSS/BOSS DR10). We will call these extremely metal-deficient galaxies XMD galaxies. The electron temperature-sensitive emission line [O~{\sc iii}] $\lambda$4363 is detected in three galaxies and marginally detected in two galaxies, allowing for abundance determination by a "direct" method. Because of large uncertainties in the [O {\sc iii}]$\lambda$4363\AA\ line fluxes, we also calculated oxygen abundance in these galaxies together with the remaining three galaxies using a strong-line semi-empirical method. This method gives oxygen abundances higher than 7.35 for three galaxies with detected [O {\sc iii}]$\lambda$4363\AA\ line and lower than 7.35 for the remaining five objects of the sample. The newly-discovered galaxies represent excellent targets for follow-up spectroscopic observations with the largest telescopes to improve the oxygen abundance determination and to increase the number of these very rare low-metallicity objects. The extreme location of the most massive and luminous XMD galaxies and XMD candidates in the stellar mass-metallicity diagram implies that these galaxies may be genuine young objects. With stellar masses of up to $\sim$ 10$^7$ - 10$^8$$M_{\odot}$, the galaxies are not chemically enriched and strongly deviate to lower metallicity as compared to the relation obtained for a large sample of low-redshift, star-forming galaxies., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, 4 tables, accepted in Astronomy and Astrophysics

We studied the global characteristics of dust emission in a large sample of emission-line star-forming galaxies. The sample consists of two subsamples. One subsample (SDSS sample) includes ~4000 compact star-forming galaxies from the SDSS, which were also detected in all four bands at 3.4, 4.6, 12, and 22 mum of the WISE all-sky survey. The second subsample (Herschel sample) is a sample of 28 compact star-forming galaxies observed with Herschel in the FIR range. Data of the Herschel sample were supplemented by the photometric data from the Spitzer observations, GALEX, SDSS, WISE, 2MASS, NVSS, and FIRST surveys, as well as optical and Spitzer spectra and data in sub-mm and radio ranges. It is found that warm dust luminosities of galaxies from the SDSS sample and cold and warm dust luminosities of galaxies from the Herschel sample are strongly correlated with Hbeta luminosities, which implies that one of the main sources of dust heating in star-forming galaxies is ionising UV radiation of young stars. Using the relation between warm and cold dust masses for estimating the total dust mass in star-forming galaxies with an accuracy better than ~0.5 dex is proposed. On the other hand, it is shown for both samples that dust temperatures do not depend on the metallicities. The dust-to-neutral gas mass ratio strongly declines with decreasing metallicity, similar to that found in other studies of local emission-line galaxies, high-redshift GRB hosts, and DLAs. On the other hand, the dust-to-ionised gas mass ratio is about one hundred times as high implying that most of dust is located in the neutral gas. It is found that thermal free-free emission of ionised gas in compact star-forming galaxies might be responsible for the sub-mm emission excess. This effect is stronger in galaxies with lower metallicities and is also positively affected by an increased star-formation rate., Comment: 22 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

(abridged) We studied a large sample of ~14000 dwarf star-forming galaxies with strong emission lines selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and distributed in the redshift range of z~0-0.6. We modelled spectral energy distributions (SED) of all galaxies which were based on the SDSS spectra in the visible range of 0.38-0.92 micron and included both the stellar and ionised gas emission. These SEDs were extrapolated to the UV and mid-infrared ranges to cover the wavelength range of 0.1-22 micron. The SDSS spectroscopic data were supplemented by photometric data from the GALEX, SDSS, 2MASS, WISE, IRAS, and NVSS all-sky surveys. We derived global characteristics of the galaxies, such as their element abundances, luminosities, and stellar masses. The luminosities and stellar masses range within the sample over ~5 orders of magnitude, thereby linking low-mass and low-luminosity blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxies to luminous galaxies, which are similar to high-redshift Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs). The luminosity L(Hbeta) of the Hbeta emission line, a characteristic of the youngest stellar population with an age of a few Myr, is correlated with luminosities in other wavelength ranges. This implies that the most recent burst of star formation makes a significant contribution to the emission in the visible range and dominates in other wavelength ranges. We found 20 galaxies with very red WISE mid-infrared m(3.4micron)-m(4.6micron) colour (>2 mag), which suggests the important contribution of the hot (with a temperature of several hundred degree) dust emission in these galaxies. Our analysis of the balance between the luminosity in the WISE bands that covered a wavelength range of 3.4-22 micron and the luminosity of the emission absorbed at shorter wavelengths showed that the luminosity of the hot dust emission is increased with increasing L(Hbeta) and EW(Hbeta)., Comment: 31 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

We present 65 Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) spectra of 62 star-forming galaxies with oxygen abundances 12 + logO/H ~ 7.5-8.4. Redshifts of selected galaxies are in the range z~0.36-0.70. This allows us to detect the redshifted MgII 2797,2803 emission lines. Our aim is to use these lines for the magnesium abundance determination. The MgII emission was detected in ~2/3 of the galaxies. We find that the MgII 2797 emission-line intensity follows a trend with the excitation parameter x= O^{2+}/O that is similar to that predicted by CLOUDY photoionised HII region models, suggesting a nebular origin of MgII emission. The Mg/O abundance ratio is lower by a factor ~2 than the solar ratio. This is probably the combined effect of interstellar MgII absorption and depletion of Mg onto dust. (abridged) Strongly star-forming galaxies of subsolar metallicities are typical of the high-redshift universe. Here we therefore provide accurate data for two low-z analogs, the well-known low-metallicity emission-line galaxies Haro 11 and ESO 338-IG 004. On the basis of Very Large Telescope/X-shooter spectroscopic observations in the wavelength range 3000-24000\AA, we use standard direct methods to derive physical conditions and element abundances. Furthermore, we use X-shooter data together with Spitzer observations in the mid-infrared range to attempt to find hidden star formation. We derive interstellar oxygen abundances of 12 + log O/H = 8.33+/-0.01, 8.10+/-0.04, and 7.89+/-0.01 in the two HII regions B and C of Haro 11 and in ESO 338-IG 004, respectively. The observed fluxes of the hydrogen lines correspond to the theoretical recombination values after correction for extinction with a single value of the extinction coefficient C(Hbeta) across the entire wavelength range from the near-ultraviolet to the NIR and mid-infrared for each of the studied HII regions. Therefore there are no emission-line regions contributing to the line emission in the NIR range, which are hidden in the optical range. The agreement between the extinction-corrected and CLOUDY-predicted fluxes implies that a HII region model including only stellar photoionisation is able to account for the observed fluxes, in both the optical and NIR ranges. All observed spectral energy distributions (SEDs) can be reproduced quite well across the whole wavelength range by model SEDs except for Haro 11B, where there is a continuum flux excess at wavelengths >1.6mum. It is possible that one or more red supergiant stars are responsible for the NIR flux excess in Haro 11B. We present the results of a search for Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) emission-line galaxies with very red 3.4mum - 4.6mum (W1-W2) colours in the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) Preliminary Release Source Catalogue (PRSC) aiming to find objects with hot dust emission. For this purpose we considered a sample of ~16000 galaxies with strong emission lines selected out of a total of ~900000 SDSS spectra and identified them with the PRSC sources. We find that ~5000 sources out of the ~16000 SDSS galaxies are present in the PRSC, including ~1000 galaxies with sufficiently strong [OIII]4363 emission lines to permit reliable determinations of the oxygen abundance. No correlation of W1-W2 with metallicity is found. On the other hand, there is clear evidence for a redder W1-W2 index in galaxies with higher Hbeta luminosity and higher Hbeta equivalent width, implying that strong UV radiation from young starbursts efficiently heats interstellar dust to high temperatures. However, galaxies with very red colours W1-W2>2 mag, similar to that in the local extreme star-forming galaxy SBS 0335-052E, are very rare. (abridged) Long-duration gamma-ray bursts (LGRBs) occur in galaxies of generally low metallicity. We aim at a spectroscopic analysis of HG 031203, the host galaxy of a LRGB burst, to obtain its properties. Based on VLT/X-shooter spectroscopic observations in the wavelength range 3200-24000A, we use standard direct methods to evaluate physical conditions and element abundances. The resolving power of the instrument also allowed us to trace the kinematics of the ionised gas. We derive an interstellar oxygen abundance of 12+logO/H=8.20+/-0.03. The observed fluxes of hydrogen lines correspond to the theoretical recombination values after correction for extinction with a single value C(Hbeta)=1.67. We produce the CLOUDY photoionisation HII region model that reproduces observed emission-line fluxes of different ions in the optical range. This model also predicts emission-line fluxes in the near-infrared (NIR) and mid-infrared (MIR) ranges that agree well with the observed ones. This implies that the star-forming region observed in the optical range is the only source of ionisation and there is no additional source of ionisation seen in the NIR and MIR ranges that is hidden in the optical range.We find that the heavy element abundances, Halpha luminosity, stellar mass, star-formation rate and specific star-formation rate of HG 031203 are in the range that is covered by the luminous compact galaxies (LCGs).This implies that the LCGs with extreme star-formation that also comprise green pea galaxies as a subclass may harbour LGRBs., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures, published in Astronomy and Astrophysics

(abridged) We present deep spectroscopy of a large sample of low-metallicity emission-line galaxies. The main goal of this study is to derive element abundances in these low-metallicity galaxies. We analyze 121 VLT spectra of HII regions in 46 low-metallicity emission-line galaxies. 83 of these spectra are archival VLT/FORS1+UVES spectra of HII regions in 31 low-metallicity emission-line galaxies that are studied for the first time with standard direct methods to determine the electron temperatures, the electron number densities, and the chemical abundances. The oxygen abundance of the sample lies in the range 12 + log O/H = 7.2-8.4. The Ne/O ratio increases with increasing oxygen abundance. The Fe/O ratio decreases from roughly solar at the lowest metallicities to about one tenth of solar, indicating that the degree of depletion of iron into dust grains depends on metallicity. The N/O ratio in extremely low-metallicity galaxies with 12+logO/H<7.5 shows a slight increase with decreasing oxygen abundance. We present the first empirical relation between the electron temperature derived from [SIII]6312/9069 or [NII]5755/6583 and the one derived from [OIII]4363/(4959+5007) in low-metallicity galaxies. In a number of objects, the abundances of C^++ and O^++ could be derived from recombination lines. (abridged) We present VLT/X-shooter spectroscopic observations in the wavelength range 3000-23000A of the extremely metal-deficient blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxy PHL 293B containing a luminous blue variable (LBV) star. We determine abundances of N, O, Ne, S, Ar, and Fe and study the properties of the LBV from the fluxes and widths of broad emission lines. We derive an interstellar oxygen abundance of 12+log O/H = 7.71+/-0.02, which is in agreement with previous determinations. The observed fluxes of narrow Balmer, Paschen and Brackett hydrogen lines correspond to the theoretical recombination values after correction for extinction with a single value C(Hbeta) = 0.225. This implies that the star-forming region observed in the optical range is the only source of ionisation and there is no additional source of ionisation that is seen in the NIR range but is hidden in the optical range. For the LBV star in PHL 293B we find broad emission with P Cygni profiles in several Balmer hydrogen emission lines and for the first time in several Paschen hydrogen lines and in several HeI emission lines, implying temporal evolution of the LBV on a time scale of 8 years. The Halpha luminosity of the LBV star is by one order of magnitude higher than the one obtained for the LBV star in NGC 2363=Mrk 71 which has a slightly higher metallicity 12+logO/H = 7.87. The terminal velocity of the stellar wind in the low-metallicity LBV of PHL293B is high, ~800 km/s, and is comparable to that seen in spectra of some extragalactic LBVs during outbursts. We find that the averaged terminal velocities derived from the Paschen and HeI emission lines are by some ~40-60 km/s lower than those derived from the Balmer emission lines. Active galactic nuclei (AGNs) have typically been discovered in massive galaxies of high metallicity. We attempt to increase the number of AGN candidates in low metallicity galaxies. We present VLT/UVES and archival VLT/FORS1 spectroscopic and NTT/SUSI2 photometric observations of the low-metallicity emission-line galaxy Tol 2240-384 and perform a detailed study of its morphology, chemical composition, and emission-line profiles. We determine abundances of nitrogen, O, Ne, S, Cl, Ar, and Fe by analyzing the fluxes of narrow components of the emission lines using empirical methods. We verify with a photoionisation model that the physics of the narrow-line component gas is similar to that in common metal-poor galaxies. Image deconvolution reveals two high-surface brightness regions in Tol 2240-384 separated by 2.4 kpc.The brightest southwestern region is surrounded by intense ionised gas emission on a spatial scale of ~5 kpc. The profiles of the strong emission lines in the UVES spectrum are asymmetric and all these lines apart from Halpha and Hbeta can be fitted by two Gaussians of FWHM ~75-92 km/s separated by ~80 km/s implying that there are two regions of ionised gas emitting narrow lines. The shapes of the Halpha and Hbeta lines are more complex. In particular, the Halpha emission line consists of two broad components of FWHM ~700 km/s and 2300 km/s, in addition to narrow components of two regions revealed from profiles of other lines. The extraordinarily high luminosity of the broad Halpha line of 3x10e41 erg/s cannot be accounted for by massive stars at different stages of their evolution. The broad Halpha emission persists over a period of 7 years, which excludes supernovae as a powering mechanism of this emission. (abridged) We present 8.2m VLT spectroscopic observations of 28 HII regions in 16 emission-line galaxies and 3.6m ESO telescope spectroscopic observations of 38 HII regions in 28 emission-line galaxies. These emission-line galaxies were selected mainly from the Data Release 6 (DR6) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) as metal-deficient galaxy candidates. We collect photometric and high-quality spectroscopic data for a large uniform sample of star forming galaxies including new observations. Our aim is to study the luminosity-metallicity (L-Z) relation for nearby galaxies, especially at its low-metallicity end and compare it with that for higher-redshift galaxies. From our new observations we find that the oxygen abundance in 61 out of the 66 HII regions of our sample ranges from 12+logO/H=7.05 to 8.22. Our sample includes 27 new galaxies with 12+logO/H<7.6 which qualify as extremely metal-poor star-forming galaxies (XBCDs). Among them are 10 HII regions with 12+logO/H<7.3. The new sample is combined with a further 93 low-metallicity galaxies with accurate oxygen abundance determinations from our previous studies, yielding in total a high-quality spectroscopic data set of 154 HII regions. 9000 more galaxies with oxygen abundances, based mainly on the Te-method, are compiled from the SDSS. Our data set spans a range of 8 mag with respect to its absolute magnitude in SDSS g (-12>Mg>-20) and nearly 2 dex in its oxygen abundance (7.0<12+logO/H<8.8), allowing us to probe the L-Z relation in the nearby universe down to the lowest currently studied metallicity level. (abridged) We present deep archival VLT/FORS1+UVES spectroscopic observations of the system of two blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxies SBS 0335-052E and SBS 0335-052W. Our aim is to derive element abundances in different HII regions of this unique system of galaxies and to study spatial abundance variations. We determine abundances of helium, nitrogen, oxygen, neon, sulfur, chlorine, argon and iron. The oxygen abundance in the brighter eastern galaxy varies in the range 7.11 to 7.32 in different HII regions supporting previous findings and suggesting the presence of oxygen abundance variations on spatial scales of ~1-2 kpc. The oxygen abundance in the brightest region No.1 of SBS 0335-052W is 7.22+/-0.07, consistent with previous determinations.Three other HII regions are much more metal-poor with an unprecedently low oxygen abundance of 12+logO/H=7.01+/-0.07 (region No.2), 6.98+/-0.06 (region No.3), and 6.86+/-0.14 (region No.4). These are the lowest oxygen abundances ever derived in emission-line galaxies. Helium abundances derived for the brightest HII regions of both galaxies are mutually consistent. We derive weighted mean He mass fractions of 0.2485+/-0.0012 and 0.2514+/-0.0012 for two different sets of HeI emissivities. The N/O abundance ratio in both galaxies is slightly higher than that derived for other BCDs with 12+logO/H<7.6. (abridged) We present long-slit spectroscopy with the 3.6m ESO telescope of eight HII regions in seven star-forming (SF) dwarf galaxies, discovered in SDSS DR4 and 6dFGRS. In addition, we use SDSS imaging data to study the photometric structure of the sample galaxies. From the 3.6m telescope spectra, we determine the oxygen abundance of these systems to be 7.3<12+log(O/H)<7.6, placing them among the most metal-poor SF galaxies ever discovered. Our photometric analysis reveals a moderately blue, stellar host galaxy in all sample galaxies. The detection of a stellar host in all galaxies studied here and all previously studied extremely metal-deficient SF galaxies implies that they are unlikely to be forming their first generation of stars. With regard to the structural properties of their host galaxy, we demonstrate that these systems are indistinguishable from blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxies. However, in contrast to the majority (>90%) of BCDs that are characterised by red elliptical host galaxies, extremely metal-poor SF dwarfs (hereafter XBCDs) reveal moderately blue and irregular hosts. This is consistent with a young evolutionary status and in the framework of standard star formation histories implies that several XBCDs formed most of their stellar mass in the past 2 Gyr. A large fraction of XBCDs reveal a cometary morphology due to the presence of intense SF activity at one edge of an elongated host galaxy with a gradually decreasing surface brightness towards its antipodal end., Comment: 20 pages, 32 Postscript figures, accepted by Astronomy & Astrophysics

Aims. Continuing the systematic determination of the electron temperature of H II regions using the Balmer and/or Paschen discontinuities by Guseva et al. (2006) we focus here on 3.6m ESO telescope observations of a large new sample of 69 H II regions in 45 blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxies. This data set spans a wide range in metallicity (Zsun/6011000 K) H II regions the temperature of the O2+ zone, determined from doubly ionised oxygen forbidden lines, does not differ statistically from the temperature of the H+ zone. Thus, we confirm and strengthen the finding by Guseva et al. (2006). We emphasize that due to a number of modelling assumptions and the observational uncertainties for individual objects, only a large, homogeneous sample, as the one used here, can enable a conclusive study of the relation between Te(H+) and Te(O III)., Comment: 39 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

Aiming to find new extremely metal-deficient star-forming galaxies we extracted from the Two-Degree Field Galaxy Redshift Survey (2dFGRS) 100K Data Release 14 emission-line galaxies with relatively strong [OIII] 4363 emission. Spectroscopic and photometric studies of this sample and, in addition, of 7 Tololo and 2 UM galaxies were performed on the basis of observations with the ESO 3.6m telescope. All sample galaxies qualify with respect to their photometric and spectroscopic properties as blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxies. Additionally, they show a good overlap with a comparison sample of 100 well-studied emission-line galaxies on the 12+log(O/H) vs. log(Ne/O), log(Ar/O) and log(Fe/O) planes. From the analysis of the 2dFGRS subsample we report the discovery of two new extremely metal-deficient BCDs with an oxygen abundance 12+log(O/H) < 7.6 and of another seven galaxies with 12+log(O/H) < 7.8. We present 3.6m ESO telescope spectroscopic observations of the system of the two blue compact dwarf galaxies SBS 0335-052W and SBS 0335-052E. The oxygen abundance in SBS 0335-052W is 12 + log O/H = 7.13 +/- 0.08, confirming that this galaxy is the most metal-deficient emission-line galaxy known. We find that the oxygen abundance in SBS 0335-052E varies from region to region in the range from 7.20 to 7.31, suggesting the presence of an abundance gradient over a spatial scale of 1 kpc. We present spectroscopic observations with the 3.6m ESO telescope of two emission-line galaxies, J2104-0035 and J0113+0052, selected from the Data Release 4 (DR4) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). From our data we determine the oxygen abundance of these systems to be respectively 12+logO/H = 7.26+/-0.03 and 7.17+/-0.09, making them the two most metal-deficient galaxies found thus far in the SDSS and placing them among the five most metal-deficient emission-line galaxies ever discovered. Their oxygen abundances are close to those of the two most metal-deficient emission-line galaxies known, SBS0335-052W with 12+logO/H = 7.12+/-0.03 and I Zw 18 with 12+logO/H = 7.17+/-0.01., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures. This paper is part of a series of publications which present a systematic study of Blue Compact Dwarf (BCD) Galaxies in the Near Infrared (NIR). Compared to the visible light, NIR data allow a better separation of the starburst emission from the light distribution of the old stellar low-surface brightness (LSB) host galaxy. We analyze deep NIR broad band images of a sample of 11 BCDs, observed with the Calar Alto 3.6m telescope. This work enlarges the samples presented in preceding papers of this study (Noeske et al. 2003, Cairos et al. 2003) by BCDs of the most common morphological type, displaying a regular elliptical LSB host galaxy. The data presented here allow the detection and quantitative study of the extended stellar LSB host galaxy in all sample BCDs. The NIR surface brightness profiles (SBPs) of the LSB host galaxies agree at large galactocentric radii with those from optical studies, showing also an exponential intensity decrease and compatible scale lengths. Similar to Noeske et al. (2003), we find centrally flattening exponential (type V) SBPs of the host galaxy for several BCDs. Such SBPs remain mostly undetected in optical bands, due to the comparatively stronger starburst emission at these wavelengths. We apply a modified exponential distribution to decompose and quantitatively analyze SBPs of LSB hosts with a type V intensity distribution. We present VLT spectroscopic observations with different spectral resolutions and different slit orientations of the two metal-deficient blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxies Tol 1214-277 and Tol 65. The oxygen abundances in the brightest HII regions of Tol 1214-277 and Tol 65 are found to be 12+log O/H = 7.55+/-0.01 and 7.54+/-0.01, or Zsun/24. The nitrogen-to-oxygen abundance ratios in the two galaxies are log N/O =-1.64+/-0.03 and -1.60+/-0.02 and lie in the narrow range found for other most metal-deficient BCDs. The helium mass fraction derived in several HII regions in both galaxies is consistent with a high primordial helium mass fraction, Yp ~ 0.244. We confirm the detection of the high-ionization forbidden emission line [FeV]4227 in the spectrum of Tol 1214-277. Additionally, weak [NeIV]4725, [FeVI]5146, 5177, and [FeVII]5721, 6087 emission lines are detected in the high-resolution spectrum of Tol 1214-277. The detection of these lines implies the presence of hard radiation with photon energy in the range ~ 4-8 Ryd. Emission lines are detected in the spectra of eight galaxies in the fields of Tol 1214-277 and Tol 65. Seven of these galaxies are background objects, while one galaxy has a redshift close to that of Tol 1214-277. Situated at a projected distance of ~ 14.5 kpc from Tol 1214-277, this galaxy is probably a companion of the BCD., Comment: 16 pages, 8 Postscript figures

We present a ground-based optical spectroscopic and HST U, V, I photometric study of the blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxy Pox 186. It is found that the emission of the low-surface brightness (LSB) component in Pox 186 at radii < 3'' (< 270 pc in linear scale) is mainly gaseous in origin. We detect Halpha emission out to radii as large as 6''. At radii > 3'' the light of the LSB component is contaminated by the emission of background galaxies complicating the study of the outermost regions. The surface brightness distribution in the LSB component can be approximated by an exponential law with a scale length alpha < 120 pc. This places Pox 186 among the most compact dwarf galaxies known. The derived alpha is likely to be an upper limit to the scale length of the LSB component because of the strong contribution of the gaseous emission. The oxygen abundance in the bright HII region derived from the 4.5m Multiple Mirror Telescope (MMT) and 3.6m ESO telescope spectra are 12+log(O/H)= 7.76+/-0.02 and 7.74+/-0.01 (~ Zsun/15), respectively, in accordance with previous determinations. The helium mass fractions found in this region are Y=0.248+/-0.009 (MMT) and Y=0.248+/-0.004 (3.6m) suggesting a high primordial helium abundance., Comment: 11 pages, 9 Postscript figures

We use the very deep and homogeneous I-band selected dataset of the FORS Deep Field (FDF) to trace the evolution of the luminosity function over the redshift range 0.5 < z < 5.0. We show that the FDF I-band selection down to I(AB)=26.8 misses of the order of 10 % of the galaxies that would be detected in a K-band selected survey with magnitude limit K(AB)=26.3 (like FIRES). Photometric redshifts for 5558 galaxies are estimated based on the photometry in 9 filters (U, B, Gunn g, R, I, SDSS z, J, K and a special filter centered at 834 nm). A comparison with 362 spectroscopic redshifts shows that the achieved accuracy of the photometric redshifts is (Delta z / (z_spec+1)) < 0.03 with only ~ 1 % outliers. This allows us to derive luminosity functions with a reliability similar to spectroscopic surveys. In addition, the luminosity functions can be traced to objects of lower luminosity which generally are not accessible to spectroscopy. We investigate the evolution of the luminosity functions evaluated in the restframe UV (1500 Angstroem and 2800 Angstroem), u', B, and g' bands. Comparison with results from the literature shows the reliability of the derived luminosity functions. Out to redshifts of z ~ 2.5 the data are consistent with a slope of the luminosity function approximately constant with redshift, at a value of -1.07 +- 0.04 in the UV (1500 Angstroem, 2800 Angstroem) as well as u', and -1.25 +- 0.03 in the blue (g', B). We do not see evidence for a very steep slope (alpha < -1.6) in the UV at z ~ 3.0 and z ~ 4.0 favoured by other authors. There may be a tendency for the faint-end slope to become shallower with increasing redshift but the effect is marginal. We find a brightening of M_star and a decrease of Phi_star with redshift for all analyzed wavelengths. We report EVN, MERLIN and VLBA observations at 18 cm, 6 cm and 3.6 cm of the Seyfert galaxies NGC 7674, NGC 5506, NGC 2110 and Mrk 1210 to study their structure and proper motions on pc scales and to add some constraints on the many possible causes of the radio-quietness of Seyferts. The component configurations in NGC 7674 and NGC 2110 are simple, linear structures, whereas the configurations in NGC 5506 and Mrk 1210 have multiple components with no clear axis of symmetry. We suggest that NGC 7674 is a low-luminosity compact symmetric object. Comparing the images at different epochs, we find a proper motion in NGC 7674 of (0.92+-0.07) c between the two central components separated by 282 pc and, in NGC 5506, we find a 3 sigma upper limit of 0.50 c for the components separated by 3.8 pc. Our results confirm and extend earlier work showing that the outward motion of radio components in Seyfert galaxies is non-relativistic on pc scales. We briefly discuss whether this non-relativistic motion is intrinsic to the jet-formation process or results from deceleration of an initially relativistic jet by interaction with the pc or sub-pc scale interstellar medium. We combined our sample with a list compiled from the literature of VLBI observations made of Seyfert galaxies, and found that most Seyfert nuclei have at least one flat-spectrum component on the VLBI scale, which was not seen in the spectral indices measured at arcsec resolution. We found also that the bimodal alignment of pc and kpc radio structures displayed by radio galaxies and quasars is not displayed by this sample of Seyferts, which shows a uniform distribution of misalignment between 0 deg and 90 deg. The frequent misalignment could result from jet precession or from deflection of the jet by interaction with gas in the interstellar medium., Comment: 21 pages, 12 figures, accepted by A&A

The discovery of the high-ionization [Ne V] 3426A emission line in the spectrum of the blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxy Tol 1214-277 is reported. The detection of this line implies the presence of intense ionizing X-ray emission with a luminosity in the range 10^39-10^40 erg/s. Such a high X-ray luminosity cannot be reproduced by models of massive stellar populations. Other mechanisms, such as fast shocks or accretion of gas in high-mass X-ray binaries need to be invoked to account for the high intensity of the [Ne V] 3426A emission line., Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, Accepted for publication in A&A

We study the regeneration of stellar bars triggered by a tidal interaction, using numerical simulations of either purely stellar or stellar+gas disc galaxies. We find that interactions which are sufficiently strong to regenerate the bar in the purely stellar models do not lead to a regeneration in the dissipative models, owing to the induced gas inflow in those models. In models in which the bar can be regenerated, we find a tight correlation between the strength and the pattern speed of the induced bar. This relation can be explained by a significant radial redistribution of angular momentum in the disc due to the interaction, similar to the processes and correlations found for isolated barred spirals. Using the Very Large Telescope in Multi Object Spectroscopy mode, we have observed a sample of 113 field spiral galaxies in the FORS Deep Field (FDF) with redshifts in the range 0.1

(shortened) We analyze deep Near Infrared (NIR) broad band images for a sample of Blue Compact Dwarf Galaxies (BCDs), allowing for the quantitative study of their extended stellar low-surface brightness (LSB) host galaxies. NIR surface brightness profiles (SBPs) of the LSB hosts agree at large galactocentric radii with those from optical studies. At small to intermediate radii, however, the NIR data reveal for more than half of our sample a significant flattening of the exponential SBP of the LSB host. Such SBPs ("type V" SBPs, Binggeli & Cameron 1991) have rarely been detected in LSB hosts of BCDs at optical wavelengths, where the relative flux contribution of the starburst is stronger than in the NIR and can hide such central intensity depressions of the LSB host. The structural properties, frequency and physical origin of type V LSB SBPs in BCDs and other dwarf galaxies have not yet been systematically studied. Nevertheless, their occurrence in a significant fraction of BCDs would impose important new constraints to the radial distribution of their stellar mass, and to the photometric fading of BCDs after the termination of star-forming activity. Both a modified exponential (Papaderos et al. 1996a) and the Sersic law give satisfactory empirical descriptions for type V SBPs. However, we argue that the practical applicability of Sersic fits to LSB SBPs of BCDs is limited by, e.g., the extreme sensitivity of the solutions to small SBP uncertainties. Most stellar LSB host galaxies in the sample show optical-NIR colors indicative of evolved stellar populations with subsolar metallicity. We present broad-band V and I imaging and long-slit spectroscopy in the optical range 3600-7500A of the dwarf irregular galaxy HS 1442+4250. The oxygen abundance 12+log(O/H)=7.63+/-0.02 (Z=Zsun/19) in the brightest H II region of HS 1442+4250 places the galaxy among the most metal-deficient emission-line galaxies. The low metallicity and blue colour (V-I)~0.4 mag of the low-surface-brightness (LSB) component make HS 1442+4250 a likely rare young dwarf galaxy candidate. We use four methods to estimate the stellar population age in the LSB component of HS 1442+4250. Different star formation histories are considered. The equivalent widths of hydrogen Halpha and Hbeta emission lines, and of hydrogen Hgamma and Hdelta absorption lines, the spectral energy distribution and the observed (V-I) colours of the LSB regions are reproduced quite well by models with only young and intermediate-age stellar populations. By contrast, the observational data cannot be reproduced by a stellar population formed continuously with a constant star formation rate in the age range from 0 to > 2 Gyr. While a faint old stellar population in HS 1442+4250 with an age > 2 Gyr is not excluded, we find no evidence for such a population from the present data., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, Accepted for publication in A&A

We present a detailed optical spectroscopic and B,V,I,Halpha photometric study of the metal-deficient cometary blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxy SBS 1415+437. We derive an oxygen abundance 12+log(O/H)=7.61+/-0.01 and 7.62+/-0.03 (Z =Zsun/20) in the two brightest H II regions, among the lowest in BCDs. The helium mass fractions in these regions are Y=0.246+/-0.003 and 0.243+/-0.010. Four techniques based on the equivalent widths of the hydrogen emission and absorption lines, the spectral energy distribution and the colours of the galaxy are used to put constraints on the age of the stellar population in the low-surface-brightness (LSB) component of the galaxy, assuming two limiting cases of star formation (SF), the case of an instantaneous burst and that of a continuous SF with a constant or a variable star formation rate (SFR). The spectroscopic and photometric data for different regions of the LSB component are well reproduced by a young stellar population with an age t<250 Myr, assuming a small extinction in the range A(V)= 0-0.6 mag. Assuming no extinction, we find that the upper limit for the mass of the old stellar population, formed between 2.5 Gyr and 10 Gyr, is not greater than ~(1/20 - 1) of that of the stellar population formed during the last ~250 Myr. Depending on the region considered, this also implies that the SFR in the most recent SF period must be 20 to 1000 times greater than the SFR at ages > 2.5 Gyr. We compare the photometric and spectroscopic properties of SBS 1415+437 with those of a sample of 26 low-metallicity dwarf irregular and BCD galaxies. We show that there is a clear trend for the stellar LSB component of lower-metallicity galaxies to be bluer. This trend cannot be explained only by metallicity effects. We investigate the dynamical effects of an interaction between an initially barred galaxy and a small spherical companion using an N-body/SPH algorithm. In the models described here the small companion passes through the disc of the larger galaxy near-perpendicular to its plane. The impact positions and times are varied with respect to the phase of the bar and the dynamical evolution of the disc. The interactions produce expanding ring structures, offset bars, spokes,and other asymmetries in the stars and gas. These characteristic signatures of the interaction are present in the disc for about 1 Gyr. We find that in some cases it is possible to destroy the bar while keeping the disc structure. In general the central impacts cause larger damage to the bar and the disc than the peripheral ones. The interaction tends to accelerate the transition from a strongly barred galaxy to a weakly or non-barred galaxy. We present deep Near-Infrared (NIR) imaging of Blue Compact Dwarf Galaxies (BCDs), allowing for the first time to derive and systematize the NIR structural properties of their stellar low-surface brightness (LSB) host galaxies. Compared to optical data, NIR images, being less contamined by the extended stellar and ionized gas emission from the starburst, permit to study the LSB host galaxy closer to its center. We find that radial surface brightness profiles (SBPs) of the LSB hosts show at large radii a mostly exponential intensity distribution, in agreement with previous optical studies. At small to intermediate radii, however, the NIR data reveal an inwards flattening with respect to the outer exponential slope ("type V SBPs", Binggeli & Cameron 1991) in the LSB component of more than one half of the sample BCDs. This result may constitute an important observational constraint to the dynamics and evolution of BCDs. We apply a modified exponential fitting function (Papaderos et al. 1996a) to parametrize and systematically study type V profiles in BCDs. The FORS Deep Field project is a multi-colour, multi-object spectroscopic investigation of an approx. 7 times 7 region near the south galactic pole based mostly on observations carried out with the FORS instruments attached to the VLT telescopes. It includes the QSO Q 0103-260 (z = 3.36). The goal of this study is to improve our understanding of the formation and evolution of galaxies in the young Universe. In this paper the field selection, the photometric observations, and the data reduction are described. The source detection and photometry of objects in the FORS Deep Field is discussed in detail. A combined B and I selected UBgRIJKs photometric catalog of 8753 objects in the FDF is presented and its properties are briefly discussed. The formal 50% completeness limits for point sources, derived from the co-added images, are 25.64, 27.69, 26.86, 26.68, 26.37, 23.60 and 21.57 in U, B, g, R, I, J and Ks (Vega-system), respectively. The galaxy population in rich local galaxy clusters shows a ratio of one quarter elliptical galaxies, two quarters S0 galaxies, and one quarter spiral galaxies. Observations of clusters at redshift 0.5 show a perspicuously different ratio, the dominant galaxy type are spiral galaxies with a fraction of two quarters while the number of S0 galaxies decreases to a fraction of one quarter (Dressler et al.1997). This shows an evolution of the galaxy population in clusters since redshift0.5 and it has been suspected that galaxy transformation processes during the infall into a cluster are responsible for this change. These could be merging, starburst or ram-pressure stripping. We use our evolutionary synthesis models to describe various possible effects of those interactions on the star formation of spiral galaxies infalling into clusters. We study the effects of starbursts of various strengths as well as of the truncation of star formation at various epochs on the color and luminosity evolution of model galaxies of various spectral types. As a first application we present the comparison of our models with observed properties of the local S0 galaxy population to constrain possible S0 formation mechanisms in clusters. In the last few years, galaxies at redshifts up to z~1 have become accessible for medium-resolved spectroscopy thanks to the new generation of 10m-class telescopes. With kinematic and photometric information on spiral galaxies in this regime, well-known scaling relations like the Tully-Fisher relation (TFR) can be studied over half a Hubble time. By comparison to local samples, these studies facilitate simultaneous tests of the hierarchical merging scenario and stellar population models. Using the Very Large Telescope, we obtained spatially resolved rotation curves of 78 spiral galaxies in the FORS Deep Field (FDF), covering all Hubble types from Sa to Sm/Irr at redshifts 0.1

Using a sample of 57 VLT FORS spectra in the redshift range 1.37

(abridged): Using HST and ground-based optical and NIR imaging data, we investigate whether the blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxy I Zw 18 possesses an extended low-surface-brightness (LSB) old stellar population underlying its star-forming (SF) regions. We show that the exponential intensity decrease observed in the filamentary LSB envelope of the BCD out to 18 arcsec (1.3 kpc at a distance of 15 Mpc) is not due to an evolved stellar disc, but rather due to extended ionized gas emission. Broad-band images reveal, after subtraction of nebular line emission, a compact stellar LSB component extending slightly beyond the SF regions. This stellar host, being blue over a radius range of 5 exponential scale lengths and showing little colour contrast to the SF component, differs strikingly from the red LSB host of standard BCDs. This fact, in connection with the blue colors of component I Zw 18 C, suggests that most of the stellar mass in I Zw 18 has formed within the last 0.5 Gyr. Furthermore, we show that the exponential intensity fall-off in the filamentary ionized envelope of I Zw 18 is not particular to this system but a common property of the ionized halo of many SF dwarf galaxies on galactocentric distances of several kpc. A new set of evolutionary synthesis spectra are presented for {\bf S}imple {\bf S}tellar {\bf P}opulations ({\bf SSP}s) covering ranges in metallicity from $ 0.02 \leq Z/Z_{\odot} \leq 2.5$ and ages from $4\cdot 10^6$ yr $\leq t \leq 16$ Gyr. They are based on the most recent isochrones from the Padova group that extend earlier models by the inclusion of the thermal pulsing AGB phase for stars in the mass range $2 M_{\odot} \leq m \leq 7 M_{\odot}$ in accordance with the fuel consumption theorem. We show that with respect to earlier models, inclusion of the TP-AGB phase leads to significant changes in the $(V-I)$ and $(V-K)$ colors of SSPs. Using model atmosphere spectra from Lejeune et al, we calculate the spectral evolution of single burst populations of various metallicities. Isochrone spectra are convolved with filter response functions to describe the time evolution of luminosities and colors in various filter systems. The models and their results are not only intended for use in the interpretation of star clusters but also for combination with any kind of dynamical galaxy formation and/or evolution model that contains a star formation criterion. We also present the time evolution of ejection rates for gas and metals for two different {\bf I}nitial {\bf M}ass {\bf F}unctions ({\bf IMF}s) as well as cosmological and evolutionary corrections for all the filters as a function of redshift and two different cosmologies. Rich galaxy clusters in the local Universe show a large population of S0 galaxies (~ 40%) of all luminous galaxies). With increasing redshift the fraction of this S0 galaxy population is observed to strongly decrease (e.g. by a factor ~2-3 to z = 0.5) in favor of the spiral galaxy fraction while the number of bright ellipticals does not seem to change. The infalling field galaxy population that successively builds up the cluster also is spiral rich and S0 poor. It has hence been suspected that galaxy transformation processes, either due to galaxy -- galaxy or to galaxy -- ICM interactions, are responsible for this change. Complementing dynamical and morphological studies, we use evolutionary synthesis models describing various possible effects of those interactions on the star formation rates of the infalling spirals. We study the effects of starbursts of various strengths as well as of the truncation of star formation on the color and luminosity evolution of model galaxies of various spectral types. Comparison with observed properties of the local S0 galaxy population is used to constrain possible S0 formation mechanisms. We find that star formation truncation in spiral galaxies earlier than Sd-type, if occurring not too long ago, as well as starbursts more than 3 Gyr ago and followed by complete star formation extinction in spirals -- again earlier than Sd-- may well account for the observed average S0 luminosities and colors. Late-type galaxies (Sd), even after a strong burst, remain either too blue or too faint. We present the B-band Tully-Fisher relation (TFR) of 60 late-type galaxies with redshifts 0.1-1. The galaxies were selected from the FORS Deep Field with a limiting magnitude of R=23. Spatially resolved rotation curves were derived from spectra obtained with FORS2 at the VLT. High-mass galaxies with v_max>=150 km/s show little evolution, whereas the least massive systems in our sample are brighter by about 1-2 mag compared to their local counterparts. For the entire distant sample, the TFR slope is flatter than for local field galaxies (-5.77+-0.45 versus -7.92+-0.18). Thus, we find evidence for evolution of the slope of the TFR with redshift on the 3-sigma level. This is still true when we subdivide the sample into three redshift bins. We speculate that the flatter tilt of our sample is caused by the evolution of luminosities and an additional population of blue galaxies at z>=0.2. The mass dependence of the TFR evolution also leads to variations for different galaxy types in magnitude-limited samples, suggesting that selection effects can account for the discrepant results of previous TFR studies on the luminosity evolution of late-type galaxies., Comment: ApJL accepted version, comments welcome!

Using the NASA Extragalactic Database, we have searched the close environment of 98 star-forming dwarf galaxies (SFDGs) from field- and low density environments for companion galaxies. Most of the found companions are dwarf galaxies, previously disregarded in environmental studies of SFDGs. Using a subsample at low redshifts, cz < 2000 km/s, i.e. less biased against dwarf companions, we find that 30% of the SFDGs have close companions within a projected linear separation s_p < 100 kpc and a redshift difference of (Delta cz) < 500 km/s. This fraction must be considered a lower limit, given the incompleteness of the available data sets and the non-negligible frequency of HI clouds in the vicinity of SFDGs, so that the majority of SFDGs should not be considered isolated. The redshift differences between companion candidates and sample SFDGs are typically smaller than ~250 km/s and concentrated towards lower values. This is similarly observed for dwarf satellites of spiral galaxies and suggests a physical association between the companion candidates and the sample SFDGs. SFDGs with a close companion do not show significant differences in their H(beta) equivalent widths and B-V colours as compared to isolated ones.
