Abstract

Aim To determine the relationships between the functional trait composition of forest communities and environmental gradients across scales and biomes and the role of species relative abundances in these relationships. Location Global. Time period Recent. Major taxa studied Trees. Methods We integrated species abundance records from worldwide forest inventories and associated functional traits (wood density, specific leaf area and seed mass) to obtain a data set of 99,953 to 149,285 plots (depending on the trait) spanning all forested continents. We computed community-weighted and unweighted means of trait values for each plot and related them to three broad environmental gradients and their interactions (energy availability, precipitation and soil properties) at two scales (global and biomes). Results Our models explained up to 60% of the variance in trait distribution. At global scale, the energy gradient had the strongest influence on traits. However, within-biome models revealed different relationships among biomes. Notably, the functional composition of tropical forests was more influenced by precipitation and soil properties than energy availability, whereas temperate forests showed the opposite pattern. Depending on the trait studied, response to gradients was more variable and proportionally weaker in boreal forests. Community unweighted means were better predicted than weighted means for almost all models. Main conclusions Worldwide, trees require a large amount of energy (following latitude) to produce dense wood and seeds, while leaves with large surface to weight ratios are concentrated in temperate forests. However, patterns of functional composition within-biome differ from global patterns due to biome specificities such as the presence of conifers or unique combinations of climatic and soil properties. Abstract

The emergence of alternative stable states in forest systems has significant implications for the functioning and structure of the terrestrial biosphere, yet empirical evidence remains scarce. Here, we combine global forest biodiversity observations and simulations to test for alternative stable states in the presence of evergreen and deciduous forest types. We reveal a bimodal distribution of forest leaf types across temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere that cannot be explained by the environment alone, suggesting signatures of alternative forest states. Moreover, we empirically demonstrate the existence of positive feedbacks in tree growth, recruitment and mortality, with trees having 4–43% higher growth rates, 14–17% higher survival rates and 4–7 times higher recruitment rates when they are surrounded by trees of their own leaf type. Simulations show that the observed positive feedbacks are necessary and sufficient to generate alternative forest states, which also lead to dependency on history (hysteresis) during ecosystem transition from evergreen to deciduous forests and vice versa. We identify hotspots of bistable forest types in evergreen-deciduous ecotones, which are likely driven by soil-related positive feedbacks. These findings are integral to predicting the distribution of forest biomes, and aid to our understanding of biodiversity, carbon turnover, and terrestrial climate feedbacks.

Abstract

Understanding what controls global leaf type variation in trees is crucial for comprehending their role in terrestrial ecosystems, including carbon, water and nutrient dynamics. Yet our understanding of the factors influencing forest leaf types remains incomplete, leaving us uncertain about the global proportions of needle-leaved, broadleaved, evergreen and deciduous trees. To address these gaps, we conducted a global, ground-sourced assessment of forest leaf-type variation by integrating forest inventory data with comprehensive leaf form (broadleaf vs needle-leaf) and habit (evergreen vs deciduous) records. We found that global variation in leaf habit is primarily driven by isothermality and soil characteristics, while leaf form is predominantly driven by temperature. Given these relationships, we estimate that 38% of global tree individuals are needle-leaved evergreen, 29% are broadleaved evergreen, 27% are broadleaved deciduous and 5% are needle-leaved deciduous. The aboveground biomass distribution among these tree types is approximately 21% (126.4 Gt), 54% (335.7 Gt), 22% (136.2 Gt) and 3% (18.7 Gt), respectively. We further project that, depending on future emissions pathways, 17-34% of forested areas will experience climate conditions by the end of the century that currently support a different forest type, highlighting the intensification of climatic stress on existing forests. By quantifying the distribution of tree leaf types and their corresponding biomass, and identifying regions where climate change will exert greatest pressure on current leaf types, our results can help improve predictions of future terrestrial ecosystem functioning and carbon cycling.

Abstract

One of the most fundamental questions in ecology is how many species inhabit the Earth. However, due to massive logistical and financial challenges and taxonomic difficulties connected to the species concept definition, the global numbers of species, including those of important and well-studied life forms such as trees, still remain largely unknown. Here, based on global ground-sourced data, we estimate the total tree species richness at global, continental, and biome levels. Our results indicate that there are ∼73,000 tree species globally, among which ∼9,000 tree species are yet to be discovered. Roughly 40% of undiscovered tree species are in South America. Moreover, almost one-third of all tree species to be discovered may be rare, with very low populations and limited spatial distribution (likely in remote tropical lowlands and mountains). These findings highlight the vulnerability of global forest biodiversity to anthropogenic changes in land use and climate, which disproportionately threaten rare species and thus, global tree richness.

Abstract

The identity of the dominant root-associated microbial symbionts in a forest determines the ability of trees to access limiting nutrients from atmospheric or soil pools 1,2 , sequester carbon 3,4 and withstand the effects of climate change 5,6 . Characterizing the global distribution of these symbioses and identifying the factors that control this distribution are thus integral to understanding the present and future functioning of forest ecosystems. Here we generate a spatially explicit global map of the symbiotic status of forests, using a database of over 1.1 million forest inventory plots that collectively contain over 28,000 tree species. Our analyses indicate that climate variables—in particular, climatically controlled variation in the rate of decomposition—are the primary drivers of the global distribution of major symbioses. We estimate that ectomycorrhizal trees, which represent only 2% of all plant species 7 , constitute approximately 60% of tree stems on Earth. Ectomycorrhizal symbiosis dominates forests in which seasonally cold and dry climates inhibit decomposition, and is the predominant form of symbiosis at high latitudes and elevation. By contrast, arbuscular mycorrhizal trees dominate in aseasonal, warm tropical forests, and occur with ectomycorrhizal trees in temperate biomes in which seasonally warm-and-wet climates enhance decomposition. Continental transitions between forests dominated by ectomycorrhizal or arbuscular mycorrhizal trees occur relatively abruptly along climate-driven decomposition gradients; these transitions are probably caused by positive feedback effects between plants and microorganisms. Symbiotic nitrogen fixers—which are insensitive to climatic controls on decomposition (compared with mycorrhizal fungi)—are most abundant in arid biomes with alkaline soils and high maximum temperatures. The climatically driven global symbiosis gradient that we document provides a spatially explicit quantitative understanding of microbial symbioses at the global scale, and demonstrates the critical role of microbial mutualisms in shaping the distribution of plant species.

Abstract

The identity of the dominant root-associated microbial symbionts in a forest determines the ability of trees to access limiting nutrients from atmospheric or soil pools 1,2 , sequester carbon 3,4 and withstand the effects of climate change 5,6 . Characterizing the global distribution of these symbioses and identifying the factors that control this distribution are thus integral to understanding the present and future functioning of forest ecosystems. Here we generate a spatially explicit global map of the symbiotic status of forests, using a database of over 1.1 million forest inventory plots that collectively contain over 28,000 tree species. Our analyses indicate that climate variables—in particular, climatically controlled variation in the rate of decomposition—are the primary drivers of the global distribution of major symbioses. We estimate that ectomycorrhizal trees, which represent only 2% of all plant species 7 , constitute approximately 60% of tree stems on Earth. Ectomycorrhizal symbiosis dominates forests in which seasonally cold and dry climates inhibit decomposition, and is the predominant form of symbiosis at high latitudes and elevation. By contrast, arbuscular mycorrhizal trees dominate in aseasonal, warm tropical forests, and occur with ectomycorrhizal trees in temperate biomes in which seasonally warm-and-wet climates enhance decomposition. Continental transitions between forests dominated by ectomycorrhizal or arbuscular mycorrhizal trees occur relatively abruptly along climate-driven decomposition gradients; these transitions are probably caused by positive feedback effects between plants and microorganisms. Symbiotic nitrogen fixers—which are insensitive to climatic controls on decomposition (compared with mycorrhizal fungi)—are most abundant in arid biomes with alkaline soils and high maximum temperatures. Background - Despite empirical support for an increase in ecosystem productivity with species diversity in synthetic systems, there is ample evidence that this relationship is dependent on environmental characteristics, especially in structurally more complex natural systems. Empirical support for this relationship in forests is urgently needed, as these ecosystems play an important role in carbon sequestration. Methodology/Principal Findings - We tested whether tree wood production is positively related to tree species richness while controlling for climatic factors, by analyzing 55265 forest inventory plots in 11 forest types across five European countries. On average, wood production was 24% higher in mixed than in monospecific forests. Taken alone, wood production was enhanced with increasing tree species richness in almost all forest types. In some forests, wood production was also greater with increasing numbers of tree types. Structural Equation Modeling indicated that the increase in wood production with tree species richness was largely mediated by a positive association between stand basal area and tree species richness. Mean annual temperature and mean annual precipitation affected wood production and species richness directly. However, the direction and magnitude of the influence of climatic variables on wood production and species richness was not consistent, and vary dependent on forest type. Conclusions - Our analysis is the first to find a local scale positive relationship between tree species richness and tree wood production occurring across a continent. Our results strongly support incorporating the role of biodiversity in management and policy plans for forest carbon sequestration.

Abstract

Clinical records were obtained for 210 combat trauma cases that ended in death subsequent to reaching a medical treatment facility. Four surgeons were recruited to review these records and assess the preventability of death if the traumas were sustained today, and to provide judgments as to now-available medical technologies and/or training that might make a lifesaving difference. In 8% of the cases, the four surgeons independently agreed that the deaths would be possibly preventable if the same traumas were incurred today; in an additional 17% of the cases, three of the four surgeons judged the deaths to be possibly preventable today. The fatal wounds most often viewed as salvageable today were hemorrhage, severe burns, pulmonary edema, and sepsis. The medical technologies most often mentioned to have a potentially lifesaving effect were ventilators/respirators, CT scanners, ultrasound, and antibiotics. The types of training most often mentioned to have a potentially lifesaving impact were damage control, ventilator management, liver packing, respiratory distress management, and burn management.

In the study described, a scanning dual-channel cross-beam laser Doppler velocimeter (developed for measuring simultaneously the two orthogonal components of flow velocity and turbulence intensity) was used to measure the instantaneous velocity characteristics of a model helicopter rotor and in a vortex wake survey experiment on a Boeing 747 aircraft model. Particular attention is given to a special purpose dual-loop frequency tracker developed to track and demodulate 10 microsecond wide pulse burst Doppler signals with a study cycle of 25% (or narrower signals at a higher duty cycle) generated by the laser Doppler velocimeter.

Abstract

The operation of a frequency tracker for use with the laser Doppler velocimeter (LDV) is reported. Topics discussed include: laser beam profile, lens matching, and LDV resolution data. It is concluded that the LDV provides good ground wind signals. The loss in sensitivity of the cavity system at high frequencies is partly compensated by an increase in the scattering cross section of the atmosphere due to dust.

Abstract

An ensemble of 10 groups of brain stem evoked responses (BAERs), each consisting of 200 sweeps, was collected for different intensity levels and for a no-stimulus condition. A fast Fourier transform was calculated for the separate groups, which permitted a phase variance to be derived. The phase variance was compared to the magnitude value for selected frequency components making up the BAER. It was found that the phase variance was a better predictor of signal than magnitude. The superiority of prediction by phase results from intersubject variation being smaller for phase compared to magnitude.

Abstract

Saline extracts of 21 human thyroid glands marked by previous administration of I131 were studied by analytic ultracentrifugation, chromatography on DEAE cellulose, salting-out in phosphate buffer, and paper electrophoresis. In 4 cases of nodular goiters portions of thyroid, both of the normal and pathologic area (nodule) were studied. After enzimatic hydrolysis, the iodoaminoacids were separated by paper chromatography and chromatography on Dowex or Sephadex columns. Protein fractions separated through chromatography on DEAE cellulose or preparative ultracentrifugation were analysed by paper electrophoresis, immunoelectrophoresis, agar diffusion, immunological reactions and analytic ultracentrifugation. In 12 patients a high relative proportion (greater than 45 per cent) of a protein with Sw,20 = 4 was found. This protein was eluted with 0.15 M phosphate buffer from the DEAE cellulose column, presented increased solubility on phosphate buffer, migrated on paper electrophoresis in the albumin band and reacted immunologically with rabbit antihuman serum albumin. Two of these patients had a normal proportion of proteins in a normal portion of their thyroid. We could definitely prove that the “thyroalbumin” was tagged with radioiodine, although the specific activity was very low. The iodoaminoacid analysis showed a higher concentration of 3 monoiodotyrosine as compared to 3.5 diiodotyrosine, as well as the presence of iodothyronine. All 12 patients showed an histopathologic picture of a marked hyperplasia. In order to demonstrate the correlation between thyroid hyperplasia and the in crease of the relative proportion of “thyroalbumin”, separate groups of rats were treated with TSH or propilthiouracil. After such treatment thyroidectomy was performed and the pooled thyroids of a group were analysed. An increase of “thyroalbumin” was found in the groups in which hyperplasia was produced as compared to a control untreated group.

Abstract

A statistical test of the brain stem auditory-evoked potential (BAEP) detection is presented. The data were collected by averaging groups of 200 sweeps in order to obtain a set of group averages. The synchrony measure (SM), which represents the degree of reproducibility for group averages, is used as a statistical measure and is calculated from the phase variance for selected Fourier components of the group averages. The sensitivity of the test was demonstrated on 375 normal BAEPs with different stimulus intensities (45, 60, 75 dB SL) from both the ipsilateral and contralateral recordings, and on 82 BAEP recordings in the absence of stimulus. In all 375 cases of normal BAEPs the SM exceeds the threshold level while in the absence of stimulation the SM was below the threshold level. The clinical usefulness of the test was demonstrated on 22 patients with tumors of the posterior fossa. The absence of the BAEP was detected in 21 patients. In 12 out of 13 patients with lateralized tumors (acoustic neuromas), absence of the BAEP was noted for stimulation of the affected ear.

Abstract

The vortices generated by large aircraft can create dangerous encounter situations with other airplanes as a result of their slow dissipation rates or in conjunction with unfavorable meteorological conditions that prolong their presence over a runway. Active and passive remote sensing systems were assessed to determine the feasibility of detecting aircraft trailing vortices using instrumentation on-board an aircraft. It was found that a modification of the front-end receiver of a 10 GHz weather radar system or a change of frequency to 35 GHz may allow vortex identification over a range of several kilometers. The CO2 laser coherent Doppler radar technique and passive radiometric techniques show considerable promise.

Abstract

The free-stream flow behind shock waves produced in the laboratory has been used to obtain a dynamic calibration of a highly sensitive piezoelectric pressure sensor under a wide variety of conditions. Experimental results on the influence of rarefied gas flow on the value of stagnation pressure measured with the sensor are described. This report covers the continuum, slip and transition flow regimes. Design characteristics of the pressure sensor are presented and experimental results are discussed in view of the impact pressure measurements of other authors.
