Manual for Urban Design Urban design is based on planning and design principles that need to meet functional demands on the one hand, but on the other hand bring the design elements together into a distinctive whole. The basic compositional principles are, for the most part, timeless. This contribution explores the outcomes of tourism-related policy-making processes within the framework of the Italian National Strategy for Inner Areas (SNAI), a development strategy launched by the Italian Government in 2012. The strategy aims at improving the living conditions in those territories located far from urban hubs, which have been suffering from progressive social and economic marginalisation. Exploiting the synergies emerging from the combination of anthropological perspectives and socio-statistical techniques, this study performs a content analysis on the planning documents produced by SNAI’s 22 pilot areas, relating to the never-ending debate between spatially blind and place-based development policies. The main objective is to investigate whether and how the planned tourism strategies in these areas are coherent with the policy framework and the guidelines proposed by SNAI. The results highlight different degrees of coherence, identifying how some tourism strategies reflect imprecise knowledge of the territory and the needs of those living there.

This book approaches the tourism and hospitality industry from a regional science perspective. By analyzing the spatial context of tourist travels, the hospitality sector, and the regional impacts of tourist activities, it demonstrates the value of the regional science paradigm for understanding the dynamics and effects of tourism and hospitality-related phenomena. The problem should be tackled in multipledimensions – technology, society, economics, law, regulations, and politics – at different temporal and spatial scales. Holistic approaches will enable technological solutions to be supported by socio-economic motivations, adequate incentive regulation to foster investment in green infrastructures coherently integrated with adequate energy provisioning schemes. In this article, an attempt is made to describe such multidisciplinary challenges with a coherent set of solutions to be identified to significantly impact the way our interconnected energy world is designed and operated.

Städtebauliches Entwerfen basiert auf Ordnungs- und Gestaltungsprinzipien, die funktionale Ansprüche erfüllen und zugleich die Entwurfselemente zu einem unverwechselbaren Ganzen fügen müssen. Auch wenn Entwürfe fast immer vom Zeitgeist geprägt sind, so sind die kompositorischen Grundprinzipien weitgehend zeitlos. Stadt entwerfen erläutert die wichtigsten Entwurfs- und Darstellungsprinzipien im Städtebau anhand von ausgewählten historischen Beispielen und internationalen zeitgenössischen Wettbewerbsbeiträgen. Im Zentrum der Publikation steht die Frage, wie die Projekte entworfen wurden und welche Methoden und Instrumente dem Entwerfer zur Verfügung stehen: Neben dem klassischen Entwurf, der im Kopf des Entwerfers entsteht, erweitert sich gegenwärtig das Repertoire durch neue, computergestützte Methoden, wie z.B. dem parametrischen Entwerfen, bei dem veränderbare Parameter den Entwurf automatisiert beeinflussen und eine Vielfalt von Lösungsmöglichkeiten anbieten. Drei Best-Practice-Beispiele, die Hafencity Hamburg, Belval-Ouest in Luxemburg und die Südstadt in Tübingen, zeigen im Schlusskapitel, wie prämierte städtebauliche Konzepte und Entwürfe erfolgreich realisiert werden.
