In 1989, Eberhard proposed a v-causal model where quantum correlations between entangled particles are established by communications moving at a superluminal speed v_t > c in a preferred frame. In successive years, several experiments established lower bounds for the possible tachyons velocities. In a recent paper, Luigi Santamaria Amato et al. performed an interesting east-west aligned tabletop experiment under the assumption that the preferred frame is the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). In that paper, they criticize long-distance experiments but here we show that most of their criticisms are not applicable to long-distance tunnel experiments where the highest lower bound was obtained., Comment: 3 pages, 1 figure

Superluminal communications have been proposed to solve the Einstein, Podolsky and Rosen (EPR) paradox. So far, no evidence for these superluminal communications has been obtained and only lower bounds for the superluminal velocities have been established. In this paper we describe an improved experiment that increases by about two orders of magnitude the maximum detectable superluminal velocities. The locality, the freedom-of-choice and the detection loopholes are not addressed here. As shown in the \emph{EPR} paper (Einstein, Podolsky e Rosen, 1935), Quantum Mechanics is a non-local Theory. The Bell theorem and the successive experiments ruled out the possibility of explaining quantum correlations using only local hidden variables models. Some authors suggested that quantum correlations could be due to superluminal communications that propagate isotropically with velocity \emph{$v_{t}>c$} in a preferred reference frame. For finite values of \emph{$v_{t}$} and in some special cases, Quantum Mechanics and superluminal models lead to different predictions. So far, no deviations from the predictions of Quantum Mechanics have been detected and only lower bounds for the superluminal velocities \emph{$v_{t}$} have been established. Some years ago a Geneva group and our group did experiments on entangled photons to evidence possible discrepancies between experimental results and quantum predictions. Since no discrepancy was found, these experiments established only lower bounds for the possible tachyon velocities \emph{$v_{t}$}. An EPR experiment with polarized entangled photons is performed to test the Eberhard model. According to the Eberhard model, quantum correlations between space-like separated events are due to a superluminal communication signal propagating in a preferred frame. The coincidences between entangled photons passing through two polarizers aligned along a East-West axis are measured as a function of time during 21 sidereal days. No deviation from the predictions of the Quantum Theory is observed. Tacking into account for the experimental uncertainties, we infer that, if a preferred frame for superluminal signals exists which moves at velocity \vec{v} with respect to the Earth, the modulus of the velocity of quantum communications in this frame has to be greater than v_{t}~0.6*10^4 c for v<0.1 c and for any arbitrary direction of \vec{v}., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures; 1 figure deleted (previous fig 8). We investigate on a possible way to connect the presence of Low-Complexity Sequences (LCS) in DNA genomes and the nonstationary properties of base correlations. Under the hypothesis that these variations signal a change in the DNA function, we use a new technique, called Non-Stationarity Entropic Index (NSEI) method, and we prove that this technique is an efficient way to detect functional changes with respect to a random baseline. The remarkable aspect is that NSEI does not imply any training data or fitting parameter, the only arbitrarity being the choice of a marker in the sequence. We make this choice on the basis of biological information about LCS distributions in genomes. We show that there exists a correlation between changing the amount in LCS and the ratio of long- to short-range correlation.

We prove the efficiency of a new method for the detection of crucial events that might have useful applications to the war against terrorism. This has to do with the search for rare but significant events, a theme of research that has been made of extreme importance by the tragedy of September 11. This method is applied here to defining the statistics of seismic main-shocks, as done in cond-mat/0212529. The emphasis here is on the conceptual issues behind the results obtained in cond-mat/0212529 than on geophysics. This discussion suggests that the method has a wider range of validity. We support this general discussion with a dynamic model originally proposed in cond-mat/0107597 for purposes different from geophysical applications. However, it is a case where the crucial events to detect are under our control, thereby making it possible for us to check the accuracy of the method of detection of invisible and crucial events that we propose here for a general purpose, including the war against terrorism. For this model an analytical treatment has been recently found [cond-mat/0209038], supporting the claims that we make in this paper for the accuracy of the method of detection. For the reader's convenience, the results on the seismic fluctuations are suitably reviewed, and discussed in the light of the more general perspective of this paper. We also review the model for seismic fluctuations, proposed in the earlier work of cond-mat/0212529. This model shares with the model of cond-mat/0107597 the property that the crucial events are imbedded in a sea of secondary events, but it allows us to reveal with accuracy the statistics of the crucial events for different mathematical reasons.

We focus our attention on dynamical processes characterized by an entropic index Q<1. According to the probabilistic arguments of Tsallis and Bukman [C.Tsallis, D.J. Bukman, Phys. Rev. E 54,R2197 (1996)] these processes are subdiffusional in nature. The non-extensive generalization of the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy yielding the same entropic index implies the stationary condition. We note, on the other hand, that enforcing the stationary property on subdiffusion has the effect of producing a localization process occurring within a finite time scale. We thus conclude that the stationary dynamic processes with Q<1 must undergo a localization process occurring at finite time. We check the validity of this conclusion by means of a numerical treatment of the dynamics of the logistic map at the critical point., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures
