In a context of increasing pressure on water resources and severe aridity; expansion in the reuse of naturally treated wastewater can be a viable and low-cost solution particularly for irrigation forests, green non-fruit trees, fabric crops, industrial oils, and non-edible raw crops. Wastewater treatment is increasingly recognized as a potential means in El-Wahat El-Bahariya in Egypt. However, investment decisions concerning the reuse of treated wastewater in irrigation needs to be justified in terms of financial and economic feasibility and profitability. Therefore, this research study aims to conduct a cost–benefit analysis (CBA) of an investment project "reuse treated wastewater in irrigation compared to other modes of water irrigation projects. The CBA results revealed that the cost of the initial investment for the production of treated water used for irrigating green non-fruit trees, Bamboo trees, and Cactus in Sekem El-Wahat, is economically efficient with 88% compared to the exploitation of aquifer groundwater for irrigating the same crops. That project allows for an economic gain of about 4,428.5 €/ha compared to the cost of producing aquifer ground water in Sekem Farm El-Wahat is estimated at 10,800 €/year. Substituting the use of aquifer ground water for irrigating crops with reuse of treated wastewater helps reducing energy consumption and offers great financial benefits to the beneficial communities. Recently, tree species identification has gained in popularity in the silviculture field. As a result, recent works have focussed on recognition of adult evergreen forest trees based on leaves, branching style, bark texture, and, more often, a combination of these features. In this paper, we deal with a new issue: the identification of 2-years-old deciduous fruit-tree varieties within a species, which is a challenging task since we rely exclusively on undistinguishable young bark images. This work is realized to respond to a real need of small farmers interested in planting bare root cultivars. To this purpose, we have built a dataset called AlmBark containing 567 almond bark images with brightness variation and labelled according to the 3 varieties considered (Lauranne, Mazzetto and Independence) which have a high demand in the Tunisian market. We propose a solution combining the Wavelet Transform (WT) technique with a Deep Learning (DL) model for a classification based on almond bark photographs. We investigate the model performances with and without natural background image removal for a mobile implementable solution. Experimentations show that with a background removal step, we obtain an excellent accuracy of 99 % while we obtain a satisfying accuracy of 96.46 % using the original photographs. This study was conducted in the six municipalities of Apayao Province, namely, Luna, Pudtol, Flora, Conner, Kabugao, and Calanasan. This aimed to survey and characterize the edible fruit and ethnomedicinal trees in the forest landscape of Apayao province. It determined the geographical location, morphological characteristics, ecological status, DNA sequencing, phytochemical contents, uses, and threats of the edible and ethnomedicinal trees in the forests of Apayao. The methods used were qualitative and quantitative research. Fifteen (15) edible and 10 ethnomedicinal trees were surveyed with sixteen (16) families were identified. Out of 25 edible and ethnomedicinal trees, the conservation status is endangered, threatened, rare, vulnerable, and least concerned. Out of 25 edible and ethnomedicinal fruit trees, most are with identity results that range from 93 to 100% identity. Flavonoids, tannins, and sapotin compounds are mostly present in edible and ethnomedicinal trees. The community members are using 15 different ethnomedicinal trees to address 32 health-related conditions. The results of the phytochemical analyses provide support evidence to support the traditional uses of ethnomedicinal trees. All surveyed trees are susceptible to pests, diseases, and destruction brought by natural phenomena such as the effect of climate change. Rapid climate change affects the supply of goods and services needed for a growing world population, reducing crop yields and threatening biodiversity, with potentially catastrophic effects on ecosystems. Particularly at risk are plant species with long life cycles, such as woody species. To address this crisis, there is an urgent need to accelerate breeding pipelines for these species to withstand new environmental conditions and mitigate the effects of climate change. In this article, we highlight examples of genetic engineering in woody species that have the potential to contribute not only to economic development, but also to the conservation and sustainable use of genetic biodiversity, including: the introgression of traits into ecologically important threatened species for large-scale forest restoration, the reduction of air pollution from foliar emissions from bioenergy crops, the acceleration of biomass production to increase CO2 sequestration, the improvement of bioenergy crops to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and the induction of flowering to reduce the time and resources needed to develop fruit and forest trees varieties with greater resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses. These examples are examined not only for their economic potential but also for their environmental and social impacts. Mechanized harvesting of fruit has been the ever-increasing trend in smart agriculture. However, the picking quality has been confined to the commonly-used unstructured planting for fruit trees. The robots can easily encounter the collisions with the dense branches and leaves during harvesting. The random spatial distribution of orchard obstacles can be highly influenced by the variation in the lighting conditions. It is very challenging on the real-time reconstruction of obstacles. In this study, a real-time reconstruction of orchard obstacles was proposed to combine the semantic segmentation and 3D point cloud analysis. Firstly, taking guava orchard as an example, the image acquisition was carried out using Intel RealSense D435i depth camera at a distance of about 15-50 cm from the guava fruit trees with a resolution of 640×480 in the orchard of Haiou Island Jiashuo Farm, Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province, China. Data enhancement was performed to improve the generalization and robustness of the model, according to the mirroring, luminance enhancement, luminance attenuation, adding Gaussian noise and pretzel noise. A total of 1,250 samples were obtained to randomly divided into the training, the validation and the test set in a ratio of 6:3:1, where there were 750 samples in the training set and 375 samples in the validation set; The test set was 125 samples. Then, a real-time semantic segmentation model was built using DeepLabV3+. The CoT module was introduced on the low-level feature map and high-level feature map of the encoder, with the MobileNetV3-large as the backbone network. The segmentation accuracy was improved on the thin obstacles like twig groups. The detail information of feature maps was strengthened to suppress the useless information. Furthermore, an edge-assisted loss function was proposed using the Sobel operator. Laplace edge loss function was used to further increase the accuracy of semantic segmentation, in order to improve the accuracy of picture edge segmentation. Next, the intrinsic parameters of the depth camera were combined to transform the semantic map of obstacles into a 3D point cloud. Statistical analysis was applied to remove the outliers. The voxelization was used to approximate the reconstruction of tree trunks and branches. Moreover, Euclidean clustering was employed to identify the individual 3D fruits. Among them, the minimum bounding box of the fruit was served as the reconstruction. Finally, the pose change matrix between the camera and the robot was obtained using the hand-eye calibration with a chessboard pattern. The minimum bounding box of the fruit and the voxelized cubes of branches and tree trunks were transformed into the working space of robot picking. The experimental results show that the MIoU (mean intersection over union) of obstacles in MobileNetV3-large-DeepLabV3+ was improved from 69.7% to 74.3% after the introduction of the CoT block, indicating an increase of 4.6 percentage points; The Sobel algorithm also considered both horizontal and vertical gradient information, indicating some anti-noise performance. The MIoU of the obstacle was further improved from 74.3% to 77.2%, indicating an improvement of 2.9 percentage points. The overall MIoU of the improved model was 7.0 percentage points, 0.6 percentage points, and 1.0 percentage points higher than those of Xception-DeepLabV3+, BranchNet, and LRASPP, respectively. There was 1.7 percentage points lower than BiSeNetV3; The ACC was 3.1 percentage points, 0.5 percentage points, and 0.6 percentage points higher than those of Xception-DeepLabV3+, BranchNet, and LRASPP, respectively, while there was 2.2 percentage points lower than BiSeNetV3; The FPS of the improved model was as high as 78.8 frames per second, which was faster than the comparison; The number of parameters was 4.4 M, which is 8% and 31% of Xception-DeepLabV3+ and BiSeNetV3, respectively, while BranchNet and LRASPP are 68% and 73% of the parameters in this paper, respectively. Besides, the IoU (intersection over union) values of the voxelized cubes for the fruit and branches were 65.7% and 56.6%, respectively, and the voxelization time was 0.34 s and 0.84 s, respectively. The better robustness and real-time performance can fully meet the obstacle avoidance requirements of guava picking robots. The real-time semantic segmentation of irregular obstacles was optimized to utilize more sophisticated attention modules or backbone networks. The use of individual protective covers (IPCs) to protect newly planted citrus trees from Huanglongbing (HLB) infection is being widely adopted in Florida, an HLB-endemic citrus-producing area. It is known that IPCs positively influence most horticultural traits, increasing tree growth, flush expansion, and leaf size, enabling trees to sustain balanced carbohydrate metabolism by preventing Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus (CLas) infection, and inducing higher leaf chlorophyll levels. This may result in more productive trees. However, as the tree grows, IPCs eventually are removed, typically between 2 and 3 years after their initial installation. Once IPCs are removed, trees become exposed to the Asian citrus psyllid (ACPs) and ultimately become infected. In this work, we covered Valencia sweet orange trees with IPCs for 30 months, until the trees entered fruit-bearing age. We investigated how the IPC protection of newly planted trees for 30 months influenced the fruit quality and yield of "Valencia" trees for three consecutive seasons after IPC removal compared to non-covered trees. The use of IPCs kick-started the newly planted citrus trees, resulting in higher yields and fruits with better internal and external quality. After 30 months of IPC protection, tree canopies were larger and denser, supporting more fruit per tree than non-protected trees for three consecutive seasons, even though by the end of the first season after IPC removal, the trees were HLB-positive. Tree height, scion diameter, canopy volume, and leaf area were significantly improved compared to non-covered trees. Additionally, fruit quality was significantly improved in the three seasons following IPC removal compared to non-covered trees. However, a decline in quality was measurable in fruit from IPC trees after the second harvesting season, with trees affected by HLB. Based on the results from this study, we conclude that the benefits from IPC protection may last for at least three consecutive seasons once trees enter the productive age, despite CLas infection within 12 months after IPC removal. Grapevine (Vitis vinifera) is one of the significant fruit trees cultivated in Iraq. During 2018-2019, severe leaf spot symptoms were observed commonly on grapevine in Al-Hussainiya district, Karbala province, Iraq. In order to identify the etiology of this disease, symptomatic leaf samples were collected randomly. The associated fungus was isolated, purified and identified as Alternaria alternata according to its morphological characteristics and sequence analyses of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of the ribosomal DNA (rDNA). The pathogenicity assay using Koch's postulates approved that the isolated A. alternata was pathogenic on grapevine leaves. Xylella fastidiosa has been identified as the causal agent of several horticultural plant diseases that have resulted in major economic and cultural heritage losses. In the last decade, X. fastidiosa emerged as a destructive phytopathogen on olive trees in the Apulia region, Italy, prompting widespread surveillance throughout the Mediterranean basin. The present paper reports monitoring efforts for X. fastidiosa in Palestine on olive for 5 years (2017–2022) and 1 year (2022) on stone fruit trees, as a result of international collaboration projects. No signs of olive quick decline syndrome were observed on olive trees in all the Palestinian olive‐growing lands. This observation was confirmed by molecular tests using LAMP technology and PCR. In addition, 500 leaf samples from stone fruit trees (almond, apricot, peach, nectarine and plum) were tested using LAMP and PCR. All of these samples were negative for X. fastidiosa, even though few of the samples from almond trees in Idna (Hebron governorate) and apricot trees in Bal'a (Tulkarm governorate) showed leaf scorch‐like symptoms. This study provides confirmation that these important horticultural crops in Palestine (olive and stone fruits) are still free of X. fastidiosa. Summary: Branch number is one of the most important agronomic traits of fruit trees such as peach. Little is known about how LncRNA and/or miRNA modules regulate branching through transcription factors.Here, we used molecular and genetic tools to clarify the molecular mechanisms underlying brassinosteroid (BR) altering plant branching.We found that the number of sylleptic branch and BR content in pillar peach ('Zhaoshouhong') was lower than those of standard type ('Okubo'), and exogenous BR application could significantly promote branching. PpTCP4 expressed great differentially comparing 'Zhaoshouhong' with 'Okubo'. PpTCP4 could directly bind to DWARF2 (PpD2) and inhibited its expression. PpD2 was the only one differentially expressed key gene in the path of BR biosynthesis. At the same time, PpTCP4 was identified as a target of miR6288b‐3p. LncRNA1 could act as the endogenous target mimic of miR6288b‐3p and repress expression of miR6288b‐3p. Three deletions and five SNP sites of lncRNA1 promoter were found in 'Zhaoshouhong', which was an important cause of different mRNA level of PpTCP4 and BR content. Moreover, overexpressed PpTCP4 significantly inhibited branching.A novel mechanism in which the lncRNA1‐miR6288b‐3p‐PpTCP4‐PpD2 module regulates peach branching number was proposed. Regardless of self-compatibility, due to dichogamous nature of crop it is hindering pollination, fruit set and breeding in walnut. Pollination mechanisms in walnut are not completely understood, and this unusually complex pollination behavior necessitates that we improve our mechanistic understanding of cytology, flower and pollen morphology, pollen collection, storage and germination and pollination process in walnut. A deeper understanding of pollination mechanisms is vital for fruit production as well as to reduce pistillate flower abortion (PFA) and to speed up future walnut breeding and varietal improvement by enhancing genetic diversity and developing hybrid verities targeted for having desirable traits like lateral bearing, precocity, batter fruit quality, high productivity, earlier harvest and resistance to late-spring frost, cherry leaf roll virus (CLRV), blight and pistillate flower abortion. A comprehensive grasp of walnut pollination mechanisms enables experts to offer more effective technical guidance to walnut growers. Leaf spot, a major apple disease, manifests in diverse symptoms. In this study, the pathogen was isolated from diseased 'Yanfu 3' apple leaves in Yantai, Shandong Province, and identified as Neopestalotiopsis clavispora through morphological observation, molecular identification, and multi-gene (ITS, TEF1α, and TUB2) phylogenetic analysis. Three isolates (YTNK01, YTNK02, and YTNK03) were selected for pathogenicity tests to verify Koch's postulates. To our knowledge, this is the first report of N. clavispora being responsible for apple leaf spots in China, and the disease has been named 'apple Neopestalotiopsis leaf spot'. Additionally, N. clavispora was found to infect crabapple, sweet cherry, grape, peach, and pear under laboratory conditions, indicating that these fruit trees may be potential hosts for N. clavispora in the field. The in vitro toxicity of ten fungicides to the pathogen was assessed using the mycelial growth rate method. All ten fungicides were effective in inhibiting the growth of N. clavispora. Among them, those based on pylocyanonitrile, propiconazole, pyraclostrobin, tebuconazole, diphenoxazole, and osthole showed higher toxicity to N. clavispora, with EC50 values of 0.11, 0.41, 0.47, 1.32, 1.85, and 3.82 µg/mL, respectively. These fungicides could be used as alternatives to prevent this disease in production. Overall, these findings provide valuable insights into the characteristics of N. clavispora causing apple leaf spot and are crucial for developing effective management strategies. Kiwifruit (Actinidia spp.) is a perennial fruit tree, and the fruit of kiwifruit is economically and nutritionally important worldwide. To date, approximately 23 species of kiwifruit viruses have been reported worldwide. As for the detection method for kiwifruit viruses, previous reports mostly used the single RT-PCR detection method. In the detection of kiwifruit viruses, multiplex RT-PCR has the advantages of being fast, reliable and inexpensive. In this study, a stable, efficient and reliable multiplex RT-PCR method for the detection of the five most common kiwifruit viruses was established. The concentrations of Mg2+ and HS-Taq and the annealing temperature in the multiplex PCR system were optimized. The results indicate that the optimal annealing temperature was 56 °C; the optimal concentration of added Mg2+ was 2 mM; and the optimal concentration of HS-Taq was 1.0 U/μL. The stability of the optimized multiplex RT-PCR system was verified by field sample testing, and the results showed that the multiplex RT-PCR system was stable, efficient and reliable. Serpula himantioides is a globally distributed wood decay fungus that causes heartwood decay in several tree species. We investigated the occurrence of S. himantioides fruiting bodies in Japan for two years and six months to characterize their biology. The fruiting bodies matured in autumn and occurred on living Chamaecyparis pisifera, Chamaecyparis obtusa, Larix kaempferi, and Cryptomeria japonica trees, as well as on dead trees and soil. Assessing three circular plots, the incidence of living trees with S. himantioides fruiting bodies was lowest in the plot with the most advanced heartwood decay. Furthermore, fruiting bodies occurred more frequently in the lower slope direction of the trunk. Analysis using the pair correlation function suggested that the spatial distribution pattern of living trees with fruiting bodies may change from intensive to random with heartwood decay progress. Finally, according to generalized linear and generalized linear mixed models, which were used to investigate the factors affecting the development of fruiting bodies in C. pisifera, C. obtusa, and L. kaempferi, no clear relationship was found between the presence or absence of fruiting bodies and heartwood decay. Thus, we suggest that fruiting bodies can occur in healthy living trees as well as in living trees in the early stages of heartwood decay. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary: Genetic transformation is a critical tool for gene editing and genetic improvement of plants. Although many model plants and crops can be genetically manipulated, genetic transformation systems for fruit trees are either lacking or perform poorly. We used Rhizobium rhizogenes to transfer the target gene into the hairy roots of Malus domestica and Actinidia chinensis. Transgenic roots were generated within 3 weeks, with a transgenic efficiency of 78.8%. Root to shoot conversion of transgenic hairy roots was achieved within 11 weeks, with a regeneration efficiency of 3.3%. Finally, the regulatory genes involved in stem cell activity were used to improve shoot regeneration efficiency. MdWOX5 exhibited the most significant effects, as it led to an improved regeneration efficiency of 20.6% and a reduced regeneration time of 9 weeks. Phenotypes of the overexpression of RUBY system mediated red roots and overexpression of MdRGF5 mediated longer root hairs were observed within 3 weeks, suggesting that the method can be used to quickly screen genes that influence root phenotype scores through root performance, such as root colour, root hair, and lateral root. Obtaining whole plants of the RUBY system and MdRGF5 overexpression lines highlights the convenience of this technology for studying gene functions in whole plants. In the Vase system, the most common training system for peach-growing countries for more than a century, light distribution to the canopy is uneven, and access to the canopy for pruning, thinning, and harvest labor is difficult. It is important to identify alternative systems to the Vase system considering the cultivar and growing environment to facilitate labor and enhance productivity and quality. In Türkiye, one of the important centers of peach growing worldwide, detailed research has yet to be published on the applicability of training systems alternative to the widely used Vase system. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of different training systems (Vase, Catalan Vase, Quad-V, Tri-V) on growth, yield, fruit quality, and labor costs of peach cultivars (ExtremeVR 314, ExtremeVR 436, ExtremeVR 568). The experiment was conducted from 2017 to 2022. Although the distance between rows in all training systems is 5 m, the distance between trees on the row is determined as 4 m in Vase, 3 m in Catalan Vase, 2.5 m in Quad-V, and 2 m in Tri-V. In the experiment, vegetative development parameters, such as canopy volume, trunk sectional area, and the amount of winter pruning weights, differed according to the training system. In the final year, the Vase system, which produces the most pruning weight, generates 48.0% more pruning weight compared with the Tri-V system, which produces the least. Concerning yield per tree and hectare, trained to the Vase system yielded higher fruit per tree regardless of cultivar, while the Quad-V and Tri-V systems yielded more fruit per hectare. The training system and cultivar affected the fruit size; the largest fruits were obtained from the ExtremeVR 568 cultivar trained according to the Vase system. The most time needed for winter pruning was obtained from the Vase (79.4 min/tree) system, and the Tri-V (57.4 min/tree) and Quad-V (60.3 min/tree) systems required the least time. The Catalan Vase (31.1 min/tree) system required the least time for summer pruning. The most fruit harvest in an hour was obtained from the trees trained according to the Tri-V (164.5 kg/h) and Quad-V (132.02 kg/h) systems. Persimmon is classified as either pollination-constant non-astringent (PCNA) or non-PCNA on the basis of the loss of astringency in fruit. PCNA trait of persimmon has attracted much research attention owing to its economical merit, as there is no cost in removing astringency. To efficiently develop new PCNA cultivars in crossbreeding, marker-assisted selection plays a crucial role. Here, we describe a cleaved amplified polymorphic sequence (CAPS) marker that can be used to select PCNA persimmon. A sequence-characterized amplified region (SCAR) marker used to screen for PCNA offspring is unsuitable for populations recently derived from two non-PCNA parents ('Yoshidagosho' and 'Toyoichi'), resulting in the selection of non-PCNA offspring as PCNA. To detect specific polymorphisms for these non-PCNA offspring, we analyzed fragment sizes of SCAR marker products by capillary DNA sequencing. A slightly lower-molecular-weight fragment at 353 bp was specifically detected in non-PCNA offspring but not in PCNA offspring. We treated the SCAR marker products with the StuI restriction enzyme and demonstrated that the smaller 353-bp fragment corresponded to allele a353-1, one of four previously identified sequence polymorphisms at the 353-bp peak, and a353-1 is linked to non-PCNA trait. Comprehensive analysis of 130 germplasms by the CAPS marker, detecting the truncated fragment after StuI treatment, indicated the presence of a353-1 in 38 non-PCNA cultivars. Simple Summary: The homopteran insect, Pyrops candelaria (longan lanternfly), mainly harms longan trees, lychees, olives and other crops by absorbing the sap on the trunk. In this study, the reverse etiology method was used to find the pathogens carried by P. candelaria. Through RNA–seq, we found a new iflavirus in P. candelaria, which was first reported in P. candelaria, and we named it PyCaV (Pyrops candelaria associated virus). Identified by a pair of specific primers, it is worth noting that the presence of PyCaV can be identified in the head, chest and abdomen of P. candelaria, and that PyCaV infection rate of P. candelaria is affected by time and location. The above results provide new insights to reveal the role of P. candelaria as a potential vehicle for microbial pathogens and extend our understanding to iflavirus. Pyrops candelaria is one of the common pests of fruit trees, but the research on the pathogenic microorganisms it may carry is very limited. Therefore, it is essential to reveal the pathogenic microbes it carries and their potential hazards. This study found a new virus from the transcriptome of P. candelaria, which was first reported in P. candelaria and named PyCaV (Pyrops candelaria associated virus). RACE and bioinformatics assay revealed that the full length of PyCaV is 10,855 bp with the polyA tail, containing a single open-reading frame (ORF) encoding a polyprotein consisting of 3171 amino acid (aa). The virus has a typical iflavirus structure, including two rhv domains, an RNA helicase domain (HEL), a 3C cysteine protease domain (Pro), and an RNA–dependent RNA polymerase domain (RdRp). Further phylogenetic analysis revealed that this virus belongs to family Iflaviridae and sequence alignments analysis suggested PyCaV is a new member in an unassigned genus of family Iflaviridae. Further in-depth analysis of the virus infection showed that PyCaV is distributed throughout the whole P. candelaria, including its head, chest, and abdomen, but more PyCaV was identified in the chest. The distribution of PyCaV in different parts of P. candelaria was further explored, which showed that more PyCaV was detected in its piercing–sucking mouthparts and chest viscera. Accurately obtaining the length, quantity and distribution of fruit branches plays an important role in orchard irrigation management, disease control and improving fruits' yield and quality. Recently, edge computing has been proposed for digital orchard management as it can increase computing power for computationally intensive applications. However, due to the diversity of fruit tree morphological structures and the complexity of the planting environment, the traditional method of obtaining fruit tree phenotypes with centralized computing on cloud servers faces many challenges in terms of efficiency and accuracy. In this paper, we propose a hierarchical growing method (HG) suitable for deployment at the edge to achieve semantic segmentation and instance segmentation of fruit tree point clouds at the organ scale. Furthermore, extract fruit trees phenotypic trait at the organ scale based on the result of point clouds segmentation. Numerous experiment show that the proposed HG method can efficiently carry on instance segmentation of branches and phenotypic trait extraction by the joint analysis and processing of point cloud data. Peach (Prunus persica), a significant economic fruit tree in the Rosaceae family, is extensively cultivated in temperate and subtropical regions due to its abundant genetic diversity, robust adaptability, and high nutritional value. Originating from China over 4000 years ago, peaches were introduced to Persia through the Silk Road during the Han Dynasty and gradually spread to India, Greece, Rome, Egypt, Europe, and America. Currently grown in more than 80 countries worldwide, the expansion of peach cultivation in Egypt is mainly due to the development and utilization of peach varieties with low chilling requirements. These varieties exhibit unique phenotypic characteristics such as early maturity, reduced need for winter cold temperatures, low water requirements, and high economic value. In this study, a systematic analysis was conducted on the genetic characteristics and kinship relationships of peaches with low chilling requirements in Egypt. We conducted a comprehensive evolutionary and Identity-by-Descent (IBD) analysis on over 300 peach core germplasm resources, including Egyptian cultivars with low chilling requirements, to investigate their origin and genetic characteristics. The evolutionary analysis revealed that 'Bitter almond' is closely related to China's wild relative species Prunus tangutica Batal, while 'Early grand' shares one branch with Chinese ornamental peach cultivars, and 'Nemaguard' clusters with some ancient local varieties from China. The IBD analysis also indicated similar genetic backgrounds, suggesting a plausible origin from China. Similarly, the analysis suggested that 'Swelling' may have originated from the Czech Republic while 'Met ghamr' has connections to South Africa. 'Desert red', 'Early swelling', and 'Florida prince' are likely derived from Brazil. These findings provide valuable insights into the genetic characteristics of Egyptian peach cultivars. They offer a significant foundation for investigating the origin and spread of cultivated peaches worldwide and serve as a valuable genetic resource for breeding low chilling requirement cultivars, which is of considerable significance for the advancement of peach cultivation in Egypt. Several features in the fruit of some neotropical trees likely evolved in response to the interaction with the mammalian megafauna extinct in the late Pleistocene. However, few studies have assessed the interactions between these plants and mammals in the absence of megafauna. We conducted a camera-trapping study in the Reserve of El Triunfo, Chiapas, Southern Mexico, to record the fauna consuming the fruit of the endemic tree Amphitecna montana which has megafauna traits. We surveyed the abundance and the spatial distribution of trees, saplings, and seedlings in 10 transects totalizing 0.1 ha, analyzed the chemical composition of their fruit, and assessed the impact of seed manipulation on germination success and seedling establishment. We recorded 12 species of medium-large mammals but the most frequent consumers of fruit were squirrels. The relationship among trees, saplings, and seedlings did not indicate the existence of a regeneration limitation. All the plant stages showed a clustered spatial pattern, which is in agreement with squirrels being the main seed dispersers. Free seeds were the more successful to germinate and establish as seedlings. Despite the current lack of megafauna in our study area, the A. montana population does not show signs of declining. It is important to obtain real‐time leaf density of fruit‐tree canopies for the precision spray control of plant‐protection robots. However, conventional detection techniques for the characteristics of fruit‐tree canopies cannot acquire the canopy internal information, which may provide an unsatisfactory accuracy of detection of leaf densities. This paper proposes a method for estimating canopy leaf density of fruit trees based on wind‐excited audio. A wind‐exciting implement was used to force fruit‐tree canopy leaves vibrating to produce audio. Then, some correlation analysis methods were used to extract key characteristic parameters of wind‐excited audio that were significantly correlated with leaf density. Finally, based on the data set of wind‐excited audio, a few machine‐learning methods were used to develop leaf‐density estimation models. Test results showed that: (1) there were five key feature parameters of wind‐excited audio that were significantly correlated with leaf density: the short‐time energy, spectral centroid, the frequency average energy, the peak frequency, and the standard deviation of frequency. (2) the estimation model of leaf density developed based on backpropagation neural network for fruit‐tree canopy showed the optimal estimation results, which can achieve the estimation of leaf density of fruit‐tree canopies accurately. The overall correlation coefficient (R) of the estimation model was more than 0.84, the root‐mean‐square error was less than 0.73 m2 m−3, and the mean absolute error was less than 0.53 m2 m−3. The United States (US) apple industry relies heavily on semi‐skilled manual labor force for essential field operations such as training, pruning, blossom and green fruitlet thinning, and harvesting. Blossom thinning is one of the crucial crop‐load management practices to achieve desired crop load, fruit quality, and return bloom. While several techniques such as chemical and mechanical thinning are available for large‐scale blossom thinning, such approaches often yield unpredictable thinning results and may damage the canopy, spurs, and leaf tissue. Hence, growers still depend on laborious, labor‐intensive, and expensive manual hand blossom thinning for desired thinning outcomes. This research presents a robotic solution for precision blossom thinning in apple orchards using a deep learning‐based computer vision system, a six‐degrees‐of‐freedom UR5e robotic manipulator, and an electrically actuated miniature end‐effector. The integrated robotic system was evaluated in a commercial apple orchard which showed promising results for targeted and selective blossom thinning. Two thinning approaches, center and boundary thinning, were investigated to evaluate the system's ability to remove varying proportions of flowers from apple flower clusters. During boundary thinning, the end‐effector was actuated around the cluster boundary, while center thinning involved end‐effector actuation only at the cluster centroid for a fixed duration of 2 s. Field evaluation results showed that the boundary thinning approach thinned 67.2% of flowers from the targeted clusters with a cycle time of 9.0 s per cluster, whereas the center thinning approach thinned 59.4% of flowers with a cycle time of 7.2 s per cluster. Upon further improvement for commercial adoption, the proposed system could help address problems faced by apple growers with current hand, chemical, and mechanical blossom thinning approaches. BACKGROUND: Adelphocoris suturalis is a destructive pest that attacks > 270 plants, including cotton, maize, soybean, and fruit trees. Adelphocoris suturalis can cause tremendous crop losses when the density exceeds economic thresholds, but because it can be both phytophagous and zoophytophagous it can serve as a natural enemy of other pests when the density is below the economic threshold. Effective control of its population is beneficial for maximizing yield and profits. RNA interference (RNAi) has potential to be a viable alternative to conventional pesticide‐based pest management, but the lack of efficient double‐stranded RNA (dsRNA) delivery systems and candidate genes are currently limiting factors for field applications. RESULTS: In this study, RNAi of juvenile hormone (JH) receptor components methoprene‐tolerant (Met)/Taiman (Tai) in Adelphocoris suturalis reduced fertility. Based on this reproductive role, we targeted Adelphocoris suturalis Met and Tai for knockdown by coupling nanomaterial‐dsRNA complexes with a transdermal spray delivery system. Within 12 h of adult emergence, females were sprayed with star polycation (SPc)–dsRNA formulations and the RNAi effects were assessed over time. RNAi knockdown efficiencies of 39–58% were observed at 5 days post‐treatment and abnormal ovarian development was apparent by 10 days post‐treatment. CONCLUSION: Our results show that spray‐induced and nanocarrier‐delivered gene silencing (SI‐NDGS) system targeting JH signal genes effectively impaired oviposition, thus developing a novel RNA fertility inhibitor to control Adelphocoris suturalis populations. An accurate and reliable on-tree fruit detection system is crucial for automatic yield estimation, mapping, and harvesting. This paper presents a deployment of the state-of-the-art deep object detection model, the Single Shot Detector (SSD) for detecting mango fruits on a tree canopy in an open mango orchard. The proposed approach utilizes the deep learning model Darknet-19 as a feature extractor and SSD for detection and localization in the object detection framework. The network's training, validation, and testing are performed on the publicly available annotated dataset 'Mango YOLO'. The data augmentation applied to training images consists of the random and central extraction of image patches and corresponding horizontal reflection. Prunus mume Siebold & Zucc (mei) is a horticulturally important fruit tree that undergoes anthesis in winter. Therefore, its flowering process is challenged by low-temperatures conditions. The transcription factor (TF) MYB21 is pivotal in regulating the flowering process, and particularly functions in petal expansion and filament elongation. However, the regulatory mechanism of PmMYB21 in mei remains unknown. To breed early-flowering cultivars, a deeper understanding of PmMYB21-regulated genes is essential. We employed DNA affinity purification sequencing (Dap-seq) to identify downstream genes bound by PmMYB21. The results revealed the promoter region is the primary binding region of PmMYB21, and the AGTTAGGTARR motif (motif1) is the predominant binding sequence type. Our analysis identified 8533 genes that are potentially bound by PmMYB21 with the motif1 sequence type, within the promoter region. These genes are involved in biological processes critical to flowering. Further refinement of candidate genes was achieved through Weighted Gene Co-expression Network Analysis (WGCNA), which identified the co-expressed genes of PmMYB21 during flowering activity. Integrating Dap-seq and WGCNA data, we narrowed down the candidate gene list to 54, with a focus on 4 MADS-box genes and 2 hormone signaling genes that are crucial to the flowering process under low-temperature conditions. This study offers valuable insights into the molecular underpinnings of PmMYB21's role in the low-temperature flowering regulation of mei, paving the way for the development of new cultivars adapted to early blooming. The cultivation model for spindle-shaped apple trees is widely used in modern standard apple orchards worldwide and represents the direction of modern apple industry development. However, without an effective obstacle avoidance path, the robotic arm is prone to collision with obstacles such as fruit tree branches during the picking process, which may damage fruits and branches and even affect the healthy growth of fruit trees. To address the above issues, a three-dimensional path -planning algorithm for full-field fruit obstacle avoidance harvesting for spindle-shaped fruit trees, which are widely planted in modern apple orchards, is proposed in this study. Firstly, based on three typical tree structures of spindle-shaped apple trees (free spindle, high spindle, and slender spindle), a three-dimensional spatial model of fruit tree branches was established. Secondly, based on the grid environment representation method, an obstacle map of the apple tree model was established. Then, the initial pheromones were improved by non-uniform distribution on the basis of the original ant colony algorithm. Furthermore, the updating rules of pheromones were improved, and a biomimetic optimization mechanism was integrated with the beetle antenna algorithm to improve the speed and stability of path searching. Finally, the planned path was smoothed using a cubic B-spline curve to make the path smoother and avoid unnecessary pauses or turns during the harvesting process of the robotic arm. Based on the proposed improved ACO algorithm (ant colony optimization algorithm), obstacle avoidance 3D path planning simulation experiments were conducted for three types of spindle-shaped apple trees. The results showed that the success rates of obstacle avoidance path planning were higher than 96%, 86%, and 92% for free-spindle-shaped, high-spindle-shaped, and slender-spindle-shaped trees, respectively. Compared with traditional ant colony algorithms, the average planning time was decreased by 49.38%, 46.33%, and 51.03%, respectively. The proposed improved algorithm can effectively achieve three-dimensional path planning for obstacle avoidance picking, thereby providing technical support for the development of intelligent apple picking robots. The canopy of perennial evergreen fruit trees in southern China has a unique Bidirectional Reflectance Factor (BRF) due to its complex multi-branch structure and density changes. This study aimed to address the lack of clarity regarding the changes in BRF of evergreen fruit trees in southern China. Litchi, a typical fruit tree in this region, was chosen as the subject for establishing a three-dimensional (3D) real structure model. The canopy BRF of litchi was simulated under different leaf components, illumination geometry, observed geometry, and leaf area index (LAI) using a 3D radiation transfer model. The corresponding changes in characteristics were subsequently analyzed. The findings indicate that the chlorophyll content and equivalent water thickness of leaves exert significant influences on canopy BRF, whereas the protein content exhibit relatively weak effects. Variation in illumination and observation geometry results in the displacement of hotspots, with the solar zenith angle and view zenith angle exerting significant influence on the BRF. As the LAI of the litchi orchard increases, the distribution of hotspots becomes more concentrated, and the differences in angle information are relatively smaller when observed from multiple angles. With the increase in LAI in litchi orchards, the BRF on the principal plane would be saturated, but observation at hotspots could alleviate this phenomenon. The above analysis provides a reference for quantitative inversion of vegetation parameters using remote sensing monitoring information of typical perennial evergreen fruit trees. Funerary cremations in Roman times were important rites of passage that involved the use of fire to accompany the dead into the afterlife. In the present study, we investigated the wood fuel that was used to build cremation pyres and the foodstuffs involved in offerings and funerary feasts in a necropolis of Barcino (present-day Barcelona), dated to the 1st century CE and located at the Sant Antoni Market site. Our approach began with the analysis of wood charcoal and fruit/seed remains, which were preserved over time through carbonisation. These archaeobotanical remains offer valuable insights into the selection of woody species and the condition of wood logs used for cremations. Additionally, they shed light on the food composition of offerings and feasts in this area of the Mediterranean coast, where data on such practices are scarce. The anthracological analysis of different combustion structures revealed that the principal taxon used for the stacks was evergreen oak, with deciduous oak playing a significant role during the initial use of the necropolis. Dendro-anthracological analysis indicated that medium to large diameters wood logs of deciduous oak obtained from mature individuals were commonly employed. Moreover, charcoal analysis suggested the use of pruning remains from fruit trees such as olive, grapevine, walnut, plums, and members of the apple family, providing evidence of arboriculture practices in the city. Additionally, various minor woody species (Aleppo and mountain pines, juniper, cypress, mastic, and rockroses) may have had several functions, including symbolic sensory aspects relating to smell and good flammability, the constitution of small objects or furniture placed on the stack (boxwood), and fire kindling or decoration (mastic, rockroses, honeysuckle, and laurustinus). Carpological analysis indicated that the most abundant offerings and/or feast remains consisted primarily of cultivated fruits such as figs, walnuts, and grapes, while pulses and cereals were comparatively scarce or absent. Finally, a noteworthy quantity of Arbutus berry remains was recorded, marking the first occurrence of such findings in similar Roman contexts to date. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Over the course of the year, temperate trees experience extremes in temperature and day length. In order to protect themselves from frost damage in winter, they enter a dormant state with no visible growth where all leaves are shed and buds are dormant. Also the young floral tissues need to withstand harsh winter conditions, as temperature fruit trees like apple develop their flower buds in the previous year of fruit development. So far, the genetic control of induction and release of dormancy is not fully understood. However, the transcription factor family of DORMANCY-Associated MADS-box (DAM) genes plays a major role in the control of winter dormancy. One of these genes is MdDAM4. This gene is expressed in the early phase of bud dormancy, but little is known about its function. Six transgenic apple lines were produced to study the function of MdDAM4 in apple. For plant transformation, the binary plasmid vector p9oN-35s-MdDAM4 was used that contains the coding sequence of MdDAM4 driven by the 35S promoter. Transgenicity of the lines was proven by PCR and southern hybridization. Based on siRNA sequencing and phenotypic observations, it was concluded that line M2024 overexpresses MdDAM4 whereas the gene is silenced in all other lines. Phenotyping of the transgenic lines provided evidence that the overexpression of MdDAM4 leads to an earlier induction and a later release of dormancy. Silencing this gene had exactly the opposite effects and thereby led to an increased duration of the vegetation period. Expression experiments revealed genes that were either potentially repressed or activated by MdDAM4. Among the potentially suppressed genes were several homologs of the cytokinin oxidase 5 (CKX5), five LOX homologs, and several expansins, which may indicate a link between MdDAM4 and the control of leaf senescence. Among the potentially activated genes is MdDAM1, which is in line with observed expression patterns during winter dormancy. MdDAM2, which shows little expression during endodormancy also appears to be activated by MdDAM4. The sweet cherry (Prunus avium) is among deciduous fruit trees with high economic value and its planting area is gradually expanding. However, little was known about its accurately suitable area in China. Herein, the potential distributions were modeled based on the MaxEnt model under the current conditions. Its performance was excellent, with AUCs >0.9 for model training and testing. The key environmental factors were the thermal factors (minimum temperature of the coldest month (bio06) from -14.5 to 4.5°C, the mean temperature of the warmest quarter (bio10) from 21.0 to 28.0°C), followed by the water factor (the annual precipitation (bio12) from 500 to 1200 mm), indicating that it is not resistant to cold and heat, nor is it resistant to drought or floods. The suitable area in China mainly is found in seven geographical regions including southwest China (eastern Sichuan, northeast and main urban areas of Chongqing, mid-western Guizhou and mid-northern Yunnan), northwest China (mid-southern Shaanxi, southern Ningxia mid-southern and eastern Gansu), northeast China (Coastal region of Liaoning), central China (most of Henan, mid-northern Hubei and central Hunan), north China (Beijing, Tianjing, mid-southern Shanxi), east China (Shanghai, Jiangsu, Shandong, central Zhejiang, central and northern Anhui and eastern Jiangxi) and south China (western Guangxi). Based on statistical analysis, these fourteen provinces or cities, namely, Shaanxi, Beijing, Tianjing, Shanxi, Hebei, Henan, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Shandong, Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan, Liaoning and Hubei were the main regions for current development and utilization while for the twelve provinces with higher moderate suitable areas, namely, Chongqing, Guizhou, Yunnan, Shaanxi, Ningxia, Liaoning, Hubei, Hunan, Zhejiang, Anhui, Jiangxi and Guangxi, we should supplement the appropriate irrigation and winter insulation facilities etc. Additionally, Hubei, Hunan, Anhui, also have been identified to have some potentially suitable areas. These information will help avoid the loss of human labor, material, and financial resources and provide a scientific basis for its current introduction, cultivation, and management. Apple (Malus domestica Borkh.) stands out as a globally significant fruit tree with considerable economic importance. Nonetheless, the orchard production of 'Fuji' apples faces significant challenges, including delayed flowering in young trees and inconsistent annual yields in mature trees, ultimately resulting in suboptimal fruit yield due to insufficient flower bud formation. Flower development represents a pivotal process influencing plant adaptation to environmental conditions and is a crucial determinant of successful plant reproduction. The three gene or transcription factor (TF) families, C2H2, DELLA, and FKF1, have emerged as key regulators in plant flowering regulation; however, understanding their roles during apple flowering remains limited. Consequently, this study identified 24 MdC2H2, 6 MdDELLA, and 6 MdFKF1 genes in the apple genome with high confidence. Through phylogenetic analyses, the genes within each family were categorized into three distinct subgroups, with all facets of protein physicochemical properties and conserved motifs contingent upon subgroup classification. Repetitive events between these three gene families within the apple genome were elucidated via collinearity analysis. qRT-PCR analysis was conducted and revealed significant expression differences among MdC2H2-18, MdDELLA1, and MdFKF1-4 during apple bud development. Furthermore, yeast two-hybrid analysis unveiled an interaction between MdC2H2-18 and MdDELLA1. Considering the urgent need for more sustainable fruit tree production, it is high time to find durable alternatives to the systematic use of phytosanitary products in orchards. To this end, resilience can deliver a number of benefits. Relying on a combination of tolerance, resistance, and recovery traits, disease resilience appears as a cornerstone to cope with the multiple pest and disease challenges over an orchard's lifetime. Here, we describe resilience as the capacity of a tree to be minimally affected by external disturbances or to rapidly bounce back to normal functioning after being exposed to these disturbances. Based on a literature survey largely inspired from research on livestock, we highlight different approaches for dissecting phenotypic and genotypic components of resilience. In particular, multisite experimental designs and longitudinal measures of so-called 'resilience biomarkers' are required. We identified a list of promising biomarkers relying on ecophysiological and digital measurements. Recent advances in high-throughput phenotyping and genomics tools will likely facilitate fine scale temporal monitoring of tree health, allowing identification of resilient genotypes with the calculation of specific resilience indicators. The scarcity of basic foodstuffs in the Mazahua region of the State of Mexico, Mexico, reflects the scarcity of arable land in peasant agriculture. This issue was exacerbated in the early years of the Milpa Intercropped with Fruit Trees system (MIAF, for its Spanish acronym), because the fruit tree strip occupied up to 40 % of the area while producing no food or income during its vegetative growth stage. Native squash (Cucurbita pepo L.) and bayocote (Phaseolus coccineus L.) are basic species in the Mazahua diet, but it is unknown whether they have an adverse effect on the vegetative growth of the newly planted peach trees [Prunus persica (L.) Batsch] when grown in association. The goal of this research was to evaluate the effect of native squash and bayocote, grown in the fruit tree strip of the MIAF system, on the vegetative growth of peach trees for efficient soil intensification during the juvenile period of the tree. The treatments primarily involved associating peach trees with native squash, bayocote, and uncovered soil. The experimental design comprised randomized blocks with three replications. Vegetative growth, shoot biomass, root distribution, and soil moisture content were evaluated 60, 120, and 180 days after planting. Data were subjected to analysis of variance and comparison of means with the Tukey test (p ≤ 0.05) using the SAS 9.4 program. The native squash decreased the diameter and stem biomass of the peach trees since there was greater root overlap between the two species and less soil moisture. In contrast, with the association of the fruit tree with bayocote, the root distribution of the peach tree was greater, with no decrease in the diameter, height, or biomass of its stem. The regulation of fruit development is a complex process and a core issue in the fruit tree industry. To investigate the role of PbGIF1 in pear fruit development, we identified a transcription factor PbbHLH137 that regulates pear (Pyrus bretschneideri) fruit development by screening a yeast library constructed from fruit cDNA. Yeast two‐hybrid (Y2H), bimolecular fluorescence complementation (BiFC), and split luciferase complementation (split‐LUC) assays were performed to confirm the PbbHLH137–PbGIF1 interaction. By tracing the complete fruit development process, we found that PbbHLH137 expression was closely related to fruit size and highly involved at the late pear fruit development stage. Transgenic experiments showed that heterologous expression of PbbHLH137 or PbGIF1 promoted fruit enlargement. PbbHLH137 promoted mainly the expansion of fruit cell volume, whereas PbGIF1 mainly increased the number of cells. Further LUC experiments demonstrated that PbGIF1 promoted the transcriptional activation ability of PbbHLH137. Our work identified PbbHLH137 as a transcription factor that regulates fruit development, and showed that PbGIF1 played an ongoing role during fruit development, making it a candidate gene for genetic improvement of pear fruit development. An excess of selenium (Se) can cause toxicity to plants. Treatment with melatonin (MT) can alleviate the stress conditions in plants. Limited research exists on the impact of MT on Se stress and uptake in fruit trees. To address Se stress and enhance Se accumulation in Cyphomandra betacea Sendt. (Solanum betaceum Cav.), the effects of exogenous MT (50–200 µmol L−1) on C. betacea growth and Se accumulation under Se stress were studied. MT increased the biomass, photosynthetic pigments levels, and peroxidase activity of C. betacea under Se stress. Only at concentrations of 150 and 200 µmol L−1 did MT increase superoxide dismutase and catalase activities, as well as soluble protein content in C. betacea leaves. MT treatment also boosted the Se content and bioconcentration factor of C. betacea under Se stress while reducing the translocation factor. The dose of MT was directly related to the Se content, and the highest levels of Se in roots and shoots were observed at 150 µmol L−1, which was an increase of 114% and 60%, respectively, compared with the control. In addition, correlation, principal component, cluster, grey, and path analyses revealed a strong correlation between root Se content and shoot biomass with the shoot Se content. OVATE family proteins (OFPs) are a class of plant-specific proteins with a conserved OVATE domain that play fundamental roles in fruit development and plant growth. Mango (Mangifera indica L.) is an economically important subtropical fruit tree characterized by a diverse array of fruit shapes and sizes. Despite extensive research on OFPs across various species, there remains a scarcity of information regarding OFPs in mango. Here, we have successfully identified 25 OFP genes (MiOFPs) in mango, each of which exhibits the conserved OVATE domains. The MiOFP gene exhibit a range of 2–6 motifs, with all genes containing both motif 1 and motif 2. Phylogenetic analysis on 97 OFPs (including 18 AtOFPs, 24 SlOFPs, 25 MiOFPs, and 30 OsOFPs) indicated that MiOFPs could be divided into three main clades: clade I, II, and III. Comparative morphological analysis identified significant variations in fruit longitudinal diameter, fruit transverse diameter, and fruit shape index between two distinct shaped mango cultivars ('Hongxiangya' and 'Jingpingmang') at DAP5, DAP7, and DAP10 stages. The subsequent examination of paraffin sections revealed distinct patterns of cell elongation. The majority of MiOFP genes exhibited predominantly expressed in developing organs, specifically flowers and immature fruits, while displaying distinct expression patterns. RNA-Seq analysis revealed significant disparities in the expression levels of several OFP genes, including MiOFP5, MiOFP11, MiOFP21, MiOFP22, MiOFP23, and MiOFP25, between the two mango cultivars. These findings suggest that these six genes may play a crucial role for fruit shape in mango, especially the MiOFP22. There is limited information on the compared performances of biological, serological, and molecular assays with high-throughput sequencing (HTS) for viral indexing in temperate fruit crops. Here, using a range of samples of predetermined virological status, we compared two performance criteria (inclusivity and analytical sensitivity) of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), molecular hybridization, reverse transcription (RT)-PCR, and double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) HTS for the detection of a total of 14 viruses (10 genera) and four viroids (three genera). When undiluted samples from individual plants were used, ELISA had the lowest performance, with an overall detection rate of 68.7%, followed by RT-PCR (82.5%) and HTS (90.7%; 100% if considering only viruses). The lower performance of RT-PCR reflected the inability to amplify some isolates as a consequence of point mutations affecting primer-binding sites. In addition, HTS identified viruses that had not been identified by other assays in nearly two-thirds of the samples. Analysis of serial dilutions of fruit tree samples allowed comparison of analytical sensitivities for various viruses. ELISA showed the lowest analytical sensitivity, but RT-PCR showed higher analytical sensitivity than HTS for most of lhe samples. Overall, these results confirm the superiority of HTS over biological indexing in terms of speed and inclusivity and show that while the absolute analytical sensitivity of RT-PCR tends to be higher than that of HTS, PCR inclusivity is affected by viral genetic diversity. Taken together, these results make a strong case for the implementation of HTS-based approaches in fruit tree viral testing protocols supporting quarantine and certification programs. Agroforestry has the potential to support more resilient livelihoods, soil health, and biodiversity, when compared to monocropping. In Ecuador, the Union of Cacao Peasant Organizations (UNOCACE) has been working with producers since 2016 to transition cacao plots to a dynamic agroforestry system that includes timber and fruit species as well as ground cover in addition to cacao. This study evaluates the application of this model and its implications for agricultural production, livelihoods, and soil health through producer surveys and field-based sampling. The program is resulting in significantly more timber and fruit trees on the cacao plots. Despite this, cacao production and income have not decreased in a significant way, once accounting for the number of producing trees on the plots. In addition, while additional labor is utilized on the dynamic agroforestry plots, after utilizing a matching procedure, no significant difference is seen in total crop productivity for each day of labor utilized. Over time, total productivity could increase for the dynamic agroforestry plots as the companion crops and trees mature. As the program is relatively new and has undergone some changes, additional studies are needed to understand the benefits or challenges, especially for soil health, that might be realized further in the lifespan of the program. The concept of Multifunctional Territorialized Agrifood Systems (MTASs) arose as an alternative to global hegemonic models in the 21st century. This study intends to identify the main ecosystem values and services generated by the MTAS of the carob tree in the territory of Valencia, which is one of the most characteristic dryland fruit tree species farmed in the Mediterranean. To do so, a multi-criteria quantitative evaluation system has been used that enables values to be assigned to the kinds of significance placed on MTASs. For this purpose, a questionnaire was carried out with 268 local inhabitants. The global score obtained is 7.6 points, indicating a high heritage value. Some of the criteria with the best scores are related to the authenticity of the carob tree and its social and historical values since this crop is a testament to ancestral techniques and traditions. Furthermore, this Mediterranean crop provides numerous ecosystem services and has multiple properties and applications, mainly in the food and pharmaceutical industries. The local population has scored the vulnerability value with only 4.1 points as a consequence of the progressive abandonment of the cultivated area in recent decades. Annona muricata Linn. (A. muricata) is a tropical evergreen fruit tree belonging to Annonaceae family, also referred as graviola, soursop or corossol. The chemical compounds isolated from this plant have linked to the ethnomedicinal properties and its anticancer properties. This review focus to highlight in vitro anticancer potentials of acetogenins isolated from A. muricata, which are potent inducer of Bax-Bak and Caspase-3 related pathways. More than 200 chemical substances that have been isolated and characterised from this plant and the most significant are alkaloids, phenols and acetogenins. A. muricata has a distinct collection of C35 or C37 long chain fatty acid derivatives that are produced from the polyketide pathway and are unique to this family. The main bioactive ingredients bring together many scientific investigations on A. muricata, and acetogenins have been the subject of multiple research and reviews. These acetogenins preferentially destroy cancer cells through the action as a DNA topoisomerase I toxin, prevent cancer cells from entering their G1 phase, activate pathways linked to Bax and caspase-3, and block NADH-ubiquinone oxidoreductase (complex I) in mitochondria, while having no impact on healthy cells. A study was carried out to assess the physico-chemical characteristics of wild fruits: Myrianthus holstii and Garcinia buchananii, consumed by rural communities in Rwanda. Although the species have been prioritized for domestication in the country, very little information has been documented on their yield potential, morphological traits, and nutritional compositions. Data were collected from nine fruiting trees for each species in the Bugesera and Nyamagabe districts. All fruits per tree were counted and 10 fruits were harvested for characterization. The proximate composition, vitamins, and minerals were analyzed using Association of Official Analytical Chemists (AOAC) methods. Analyses of inferential statistics were performed to detect differences in means among the fruits from different populations. The highest yield (279 kg/tree) for M. holstii was recorded in the Musebeya population while the highest (15.12 kg/tree) for G. buchananii was recorded in the Juru populations. The quantities of vitamins A and C in M. holstii fruits ranged from 0.92 mg/100 g to 0.93 mg/100 g and from 19.22 mg/100 g to 19.94 mg/100 g, respectively. The quantities of vitamins A and C in G. buchananii fruits ranged from 0.56 mg/100 g to 0.95 mg/100 g and 33.82 mg/100 g to 34.84 mg/100 g, respectively. The most abundant mineral element recorded in this study was iron (15.95 mg/100 g) found in the M. holstii species and contributing 159.5% of the recommended daily allowance. The results obtained in this work suggest the potential value of G. buchananii and M. holstii for the development of novel products in the food industry. Fruiting trees provide important fruit and seed resources for various animal species, but rarely are they considered to be rich sources of insects as well. During a study of seed dispersal of Trewia nudiflora (Euphorbiaceae) using camera traps in Nepal, we observed four tropical deer species (Axis axis, Muntiacus vaginalis, Rusa unicolor, Axis porcinus) foraging for insects, rather than fruits under the trees. These herbivorous deer are proven seed dispersers of Trewia, but 8%–38% of video captures (across each species) were of insectivory, rather than frugivory. The deer chased and consumed red cotton bugs (Dysdercus sp. family Pyrrhocoridae), which were seed predators that hoarded Trewia seeds. It is likely that other unidentified insect species were also consumed. Tropical deer species are considered to be fully herbivorous, so our observations extend their known diets and possibly indicate a seasonal requirement for protein. These findings also highlight tri‐trophic interactions among deer, insects, and fruits that could have important implications for seedling recruitment if seed predators are being consumed by seed dispersers (in addition to fruit consumption). Abstract [Objective] The study aims to investigate the chemosensory effect of fading leaves of Ziziphus jujuba, Juglans regia, and Malus pumila in northern Shaanxi, and to provide theoretical guidance for the selection of suitable grass species under economic forests. [Methods] Outdoor potting forage Lolium perenne and Medicago sativa were set up with different concentrations of Z. jujuba, J. regia, and M . pumila withered leaf extracts (0.1, 0.05, 0.025, 0.012 5 g/mL) treatments to determine the growth and physiological indexes of the forage. [Results] (1) The dry mass of forage monocultures was significantly lower than the control in most of the three types of withered leaves treated with each concentration of leachate, and the decrease was smaller in the Z. jujuba leachate. (2) Forage malondialdehyde content was higher than the control under all three types of leachate treatments, while the increase in Z. jujuba leachate was smaller, and the changes in its chlorophyll content, ascorbic acid content and antioxidant enzyme activity differed significantly among the three types of leachates, and the variability of L. perenne was significantly greater than that of M . sativa. (3) There were significant differences in the effects of the three types of extracts on the root traits of the forages, all of which inhibited their root length growth, significantly inhibited the number of L. perenne root tips, and promoted the number of M . sativa root tips. [Conclusion] Three kinds of fruit tree leaf extract showed significant inhibition on the growth of two kinds of forage grasses, and the inhibitory effect of Z. jujuba extract was the smallest, and the growth of L. perenne was less inhibited than that of M . sativa.

Due to its vast potential for applications in agricultural harvesting, the tethered unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) has garnered considerable interest. However, the anti-disturbance control of this system remains fraught with obstacles, stemming primarily from its inherent nonlinearity, unpredictable airflow disturbances, unmeasurable tether tension, and the changes in the center of gravity during operation. We propose a comprehensive dynamic model for the operational tethered unmanned aerial vehicle with considering the center of gravity shift. Because of obstructions caused by branches and leaves, the tethered UAV can't reach fruits inside the tree. Therefore, two deformation functions of the tethered quadcopter are considered. Additionally, in order to enhance the effectiveness of traditional Active Disturbance Rejection Control, we present an optimized controller combining a phase compensation algorithm with a nonlinear function. The proposed Controller is validated in a high-fidelity simulation environment, considering internal interference, wind field interference and reactive force from produces. Besides, the simulation is specifically developed for picking operation, The results underscore the better observation capabilities of the enhanced controller proposed in this study. Moreover, when deployed in a simulated picking environment, the improved controller exhibits remarkable resistance to the interference and significantly mitigates chattering issues. Concerns about competition between pollinators are predicated on the assumption of floral resource limitation. Floral resource limitation, however, is a complex phenomenon involving the interplay of resource production by plants, resource demand by pollinators, and exogenous factors—like weather conditions—that constrain both plants and pollinators. In this study, we examined nectar limitation during the mass flowering of rosaceous fruit trees in early spring. Our study was set in the same region as a previous study that found severe nectar limitation in summer grasslands. We used this seasonal contrast to evaluate two alternative hypotheses concerning the seasonal dynamics of floral resource limitation: either (H1) rates of resource production and consumption are matched through seasonal time to maintain a consistent degree of resource limitation, or (H2) a mismatch of high floral resource production and low pollinator activity in early spring creates a period of relaxed resource limitation that intensifies later in the year. We found generally much lower depletion in our spring study compared to the near 100% depletion found in the summer study, but depletion rates varied markedly through diel time and across sampling days, with afternoon depletion rates sometimes exceeding 80%. In some cases, there were also pronounced differences in depletion rates across simultaneously sampled floral species, indicating different degrees of nectar exploitation. These findings generally support the seasonal mismatch hypothesis (H2) but underscore the complex contingency of nectar depletion. The challenge of future work is to discern how the fluctuation of resource limitation across diel, inter‐diel, and seasonal time scales translates into population‐level outcomes for pollinators. SUMMARY: Next‐generation sequencing (NGS) library construction often involves using restriction enzymes to decrease genome complexity, enabling versatile polymorphism detection in plants. However, plant leaves frequently contain impurities, such as polyphenols, necessitating DNA purification before enzymatic reactions. To overcome this problem, we developed a PCR‐based method for expeditious NGS library preparation, offering flexibility in number of detected polymorphisms. By substituting a segment of the simple sequence repeat sequence in the MIG‐seq primer set (MIG‐seq being a PCR method enabling library construction with low‐quality DNA) with degenerate oligonucleotides, we introduced variability in detectable polymorphisms across various crops. This innovation, named degenerate oligonucleotide primer MIG‐seq (dpMIG‐seq), enabled a streamlined protocol for constructing dpMIG‐seq libraries from unpurified DNA, which was implemented stably in several crop species, including fruit trees. Furthermore, dpMIG‐seq facilitated efficient lineage selection in wheat and enabled linkage map construction and quantitative trait loci analysis in tomato, rice, and soybean without necessitating DNA concentration adjustments. These findings underscore the potential of the dpMIG‐seq protocol for advancing genetic analyses across diverse plant species. Significance Statement: Given that plants contain impurities in their leaves, DNA purification is required to construct NGS libraries with reduced genomic complexity using restriction enzymes, which poses a hinderance to rapid genotyping. We developed degenerate oligonucleotide primer MIG‐seq and its accompanying protocol, a method for constructing NGS libraries with varying degrees of complexity reduction from unpurified plant DNA using PCR, and demonstrated the feasibility of expeditious genetic analysis across various crop species.
