This volume, the first of two volumes, is a collection of 55 unclassified/unlimited-distribution papers which were presented at the Joint Army-Navy-NASA-Air Force (JANNAF) 38th Combustion Subcommittee (CS), 26th Airbreathing Propulsion Subcommittee (APS), 20th Propulsion Systems Hazards Subcommittee (PSHS), and 2nd Modeling and Simulation Subcommittee. The meeting was held 8-1 2 April 2002 at the Bayside Inn at The Sandestin Golf & Beach Resort and Eglin Air Force Base, Destin, Florida. Topics cover five major technology areas including: 1) Combustion - Propellant Combustion, Ingredient Kinetics, Metal Combustion, Decomposition Processes and Material Characterization, Rocket Motor Combustion, and Liquid & Hybrid Combustion; 2) Liquid Rocket Engines - Low Cost Hydrocarbon Liquid Rocket Engines, Liquid Propulsion Turbines, Liquid Propulsion Pumps, and Staged Combustion Injector Technology; 3) Modeling & Simulation - Development of Multi-Disciplinary RBCC Modeling, Gun Modeling, and Computational Modeling for Liquid Propellant Combustion; 4) Guns - Gun Propelling Charge Design, and ETC Gun Propulsion; and 5) Airbreathing - Scramjet and Ramjet S&T Pro ram Overviews.

This volume, the first of four volumes, is a collection of 28 unclassified/unlimited-distribution papers which were presented at the Joint Army-Navy-NASA-Air Force (JANNAF) 26th Airbreathing Propulsion Subcommittee (APS) was held jointly with the 38th Combustion Subcommittee (CS), 20th Propulsion Systems Hazards Subcommittee (PSHS), and 2nd Modeling and Simulation Subcommittee. Topics covered include: scramjet and ramjet R&D program overviews; tactical propulsion; space access; NASA GTX status; PDE technology; actively cooled engine structures; modeling and simulation of complex hydrocarbon fuels and unsteady processes; and component modeling and simulation.

Current burning rate measurement test techniques and subscale test hardware used within the NATO community are reviewed and recommendations are made to support improved scaling and prediction of internal ballistics of a full-scale solid propellant motor. The NATO Research and Technology Organization (RTO), Advanced Vehicle Technology (AVT), Working Group (WG) 016 (formerly AGARD/PEP Working Group #27) undertook to evaluate methods used within the NATO propulsion community to measure burning rate in solid propellant rocket systems. The purpose was to identify similarities and differences among the member nations. The WG 016 sought to contribute to improvements in the burning rate tools by addressing issues that have remained unresolved in the solid propulsion industry for over 40 years: (1) Better understanding of burning rate, r(sub b)(p,To), data from various facilities to ease the comparison of propellants from various manufacturers and to improve international exchanges and cooperation. (2) Improved measurement accuracy and reliability to allow a decrease in the number of tests (and associated time and cost) and improved control of manufacturing and quality assurance and the assessment of aging. AVT WG 016 activities have identified that manufacturer burning rate data may not easily be compared without accounting for industry-wide differences in subscale devices, test methods and scaling analysis methods. The WG recommends the NATO propulsion community review these findings as a means of advancing their own burning rate measurement and analysis methods.

A JANNAF Combustion Subcommittee Technology Awareness Seminar on "Active Combustion Control (ACC) in Propulsion Systems" was held 12 November 1997 at the NASA Lewis Research Center (LeRC), Cleveland, Ohio. The objectives of the seminar were: (1) Define the need and potential of ACC to meet future requirements for gas turbines and ramjets; (2) Explain general principles of ACC and discuss recent successes to suppress combustion instabilities, increase combustion efficiency, reduce emission, and extend flammability limits; (3) Identify R&D barriers/needs for practical implementation of ACC; (4) Explore potential for improving coordination of future R&D activities funded by various government agencies. Over 40 individuals representing senior management from over 20 industry and government organizations participated. This document summarizes the presentations and findings of this seminar.

A thorough critical assessment of the state-of-the-art of boron fuel ignition/combustion has been carried out and areas of deficiency defined. An improved boron single particle ignition model treating the effects of water vapor on particle ignition has been developed. Boron single particle combustion models which include the effects of finite kinetics and correctly predict transition from a second-order dependence of burn time on particle size to a first-order dependence for small particle sizes have also been developed. Considerable progress has been made in developing an experimental apparatus and diagnostics for studying single boron particle ignition and combustion processes for small (less than 25 micron diameter) particles and for studying the kinetics of the critical (for ignition) liquid boric oxide-water vapor reaction. In addition, a test bed for study of the processes involved in burning of compacted boron solid fuel grains in a hot air crossflow has been designed and is under construction. Finally, a simplified model of processes occurring in a perfectly stirred reactor with a cloud of boron particles as the fuel has been developed and is being used in design of a test apparatus for study of boron dust cloud ignition and combustion.
