2. Regional differences, dynamic changes, and influencing factors of carbon emissions from industrial production energy consumption in China

Abstract

[Objective] Carbon emissions from industrial production are the most important source of carbon emissions from production activities in China. The purpose of this study was to measure the carbon emission quantity and intensity of industrial production energy consumption, explore their regional differences and influencing factors, and provide corresponding policy recommendations for carbon emission reduction to help achieve carbon peak and carbon neutrality. [Methods] The regional differences, dynamic changes, and influencing factors of national and regional carbon emissions from 2005 to 2019 were analyzed using carbon emission classification, Dagum Gini coefficient, kernel density estimation, and spatial econometric models. [Results] (1) The quantity of carbon emissions from industrial energy consumption showed an increasing trend from 2005 to 2019. Carbon emission quantity was eastern region>central region>western region, then changed to eastern region>western region>central region. Carbon emission intensity showed a downward trend. The order of carbon emission intensity from high to low was always the western region, the central region, and the eastern region. (2) The overall differences of carbon emission quantity and intensity across the country were large and showed an upward trend, among which, the overall Gini coefficient of carbon emission quantity increased from 0.3793 in 2005 to 0.3861 in 2019, and the overall Gini coefficient of carbon emission intensity increased from 0.3160 in 2005 to 0.3990 in 2019. The eastern region had the largest intra-regional difference in carbon emission quantity, and the average Gini coefficient was 0.4119. The western region had the largest intra-regional difference in carbon emission intensity, and the average Gini coefficient was 0.3175. (3) Carbon emission quantity of industrial production energy consumption was mainly affected by industrial structure and foreign direct investment, and carbon emission intensity was mainly affected by foreign direct investment and scientific and technological innovation. In addition, high urbanization rate significantly increased carbon emissions in the eastern region, while significantly reduced carbon emissions in the western region, showing regional differences. [Conclusion] There were significant regional differences in carbon emissions from industrial production energy consumption, and there were obvious differences in the dynamic change characteristics of regional carbon emissions. The use of spatial econometric model can better identify the influencing factors and spatial effects of carbon emissions in the country and the three regions, which is of great significance for taking corresponding measures to reduce carbon emissions according to local conditions.

Abstract

The positive development of ecological efficiency is of great significance for the high quality synchronization development of economy and ecological environment. In order to study the temporal and spatial distribution dynamics and regional differences of the ecological efficiency of tobacco planting zone in China, the Super-SBM model was used to calculate the ecological efficiency of provincial tobacco planting zone in China from 2005 to 2019 from economic perspective, and the kernel density function, Gini coefficient, σ convergence and Markvo transition matrix were used to analyze the dynamics of spatial distribution and regional differences in this paper. The research results show that: (1) China's overall ecological efficiency exhibits a U-shaped curve, i.e., decreased first and then increased. (2) The overall difference in eco-efficiency of tobacco planting zone is large, which is mainly originated from the inter-regional differences and hypervariable density. (3)The eco-efficiency development of tobacco planting zone in China does not have the characteristics of convergence, resulting in differences in spatial distribution. (4) The national and regional eco-efficiency of tobacco planting zone has the greatest transfer probability from year t to year t+1 in the same level of eco-efficiency.

Abstract

Constructing a reasonable evaluation system can help to scientifically evaluate the vulnerability of the atmospheric environment, and policy recommendations would be provided for the precise prevention and control of air pollution as well as rational use of natural resources on the basis of evaluation results. Time series global principal component analysis was used to extract principal components from the short panel data of 14 cities in Liaoning Province from 2014 to 2019, and a comprehensive assessment of vulnerability was carried out consequently. The results show that: according to the results of principal component analysis, the cities of Liaoning Province were systematically clustered into five categories. From 2014 to 2019, the atmospheric environmental vulnerability of Liaoning Province decreased volatility, and the area of severely vulnerable areas reached 78.03% in 2017. The vulnerability of the atmospheric environment in Liaoning Province in 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2018 has significant spatial autocorrelation. From 2014 to 2019, the influence of various factors on the spatial differentiation of vulnerability has changed significantly. Time series global principal component analysis can evaluate and analyze panel data of atmospheric environmental vulnerability. Targeted policy measures should be adopted to effectively control the vulnerability of the atmospheric environment in Liaoning Province. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Purpose: The single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs2257440 in exon 1 of the gene DcR3 is known to be significantly associated with susceptibility to esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). In the present study, bioinformatics analysis indicated that the SNP might influence the binding of a transcription factor, metal regulatory transcription factor 1 (MTF-1), to its target gene. We further investigated whether the polymorphism rs2257440 could regulate DcR3 expression as a functional SNP via MTF-1. Methods and Results: Luciferase reporter assay indicated that MTF-1 elevated the expression of luciferase in the presence of the T allele of rs2257440 while no change in the expression was associated with the C allele of the polymorphism. Chromatin immunoprecipitation further evaluated the binding between the locus harboring the T allele and MTF-1. In the case of the TC genotype, over-expression of MTF-1 elevated DcR3 expression, which in turn promoted the invasion capacity of KYSE450 cells. However, there was no significant change in the invasion capacity of EC109 cells, which had the CC genotype. In the cancer cells of the ESCC patients, the expression of DcR3 was higher in the case of the TC or TT genotypes in comparison to the gene expression associated with the CC genotype. Over-expression of MTF-1 also decreased apoptosis of EC109 and KYSE450 cells, but the decrement was more in KYSE450 cells than in EC109 cells. Conclusions: Our finding indicates that rs2257440 is a functional SNP. The T allele of rs2257440 can increase DcR3 expression as it promotes binding of the gene with the specific transcription factor MTF-1. Therefore, the T allele of this polymorphism can decrease apoptosis and promote the invasion capacity of the cells in ESCC.

49. High-Lying 31AgDark-State-Mediated Singlet Fission

Abstract

Singlet fission (SF), the conversion of one high-energy singlet to two low-energy triplets, provides the potential to increase the efficiency of photovoltaic devices. In the SF chromophores with C2hsymmetry, exemplified by polyenes, singlet-to-triplet conversion generally involves a low-lying 21Agdark state, which serves as either a multiexciton (ME) intermediate to promote the SF process or a parasitic trap state to shunt excited-state populations via internal conversion. This controversial behavior calls for a deep understanding of dark-state-related photophysics involving the higher-lying singlet state. However, the optical “dark” and “transient” nature of these dark states and strong correlation feature of double exciton species make their characterization and interpretation challenging from both experimental and computational perspectives. In the present work combining transient spectroscopy and multireference electronic structure calculations (XDW-CASPT2), we addressed a new photophysical model, i.e., a high-lying 31Agdark-state-mediated ultrafast SF process in the benzodipyrrolidone (BDPP) skeleton. Such a 31Agdark state with distinctive double excitation character, described as the ME state, could be populated from the initial 11Bubright state on an ultrafast time scale given the quasi-degeneracy and intersection of the two electronic states. Furthermore, the suitable optical band gap and triplet energy, high triplet yield, and excellent photostability render BDPP a promising SF candidate for photovoltaic devices. These results not only enrich the arsenal of SF materials but also shed new insights into the understanding of dark-state-related photophysics, which could promote the development of new SF-active materials.
