1. Hybrid-Frequency Phase-Shift PWM Technique to Reduce DC-Side and AC-Side High Frequency Current Harmonics in PMSM Drives

Abstract

The presence of current harmonics on both ac-side and dc-side is undesired for voltage source inverters feeding permanent magnet synchronous motor systems. This article presents a hybrid-frequency phase-shift pulse width modulation (HFPSPWM) method to mitigate the high frequency current harmonics on both sides. The mechanism of reducing the root mean square of dc-side current harmonics by phase-shift modulation is analyzed. By introducing individual switching frequency for each phase and addressing an optimization problem, the ac-side current distortion is reduced with minimal impact on the dc-side performance. Simulations and experiments validate that the proposed HFPSPWM can alleviate the total harmonic distortion of phase currents, as well as minimize the dc-side current harmonics.

Abstract

This study aimed to explore the efficacy of lipid extraction methods on black solider fly larvae (BSFL) which is a potential sustainable source of biodiesel. The raw fat content of BSFL in exam was 29.6% on dry matter basis, which is comparable to other studies. Both aqueous enzymatic method and Soxhlet method are effective in BSFL lipid extraction at levels around 80%. The lipid quality from aqueous enzymatic method is superior in addition to other merits such as mild, easy and fast. Further research is recommended to scale up its potential as bioenergy alternatives.

Abstract

The convective heat transfer characteristics of end-winding for a 10 kW external rotor PMSM with open end cap are studied in this paper. A coupling iterative method of CFD and thermal network (TN) is proposed to solve the motor temperatures and convective heat transfer coefficients (CHTC). The variation laws of the CHTCs and heat dissipation proportions of 10 kW motor walls with speed are analyzed. The heat dissipation capacities of the end-winding for motors with open and closed end cap are compared. Based on the CFD results, a fitting formula of end-winding CHTC for external rotor motor with open end cap is constructed, in which the Nusselt number is calculated by the dimensionless parameters composed of the geometric features of the open end cap. The validities of the proposed coupling iterative method and the fitting formula are verified by the temperature rise experiment of the 10 kW prototype. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Site soils with persistent cyanide compounds (primarily iron-cyanide complex) pose potential hazards to the environment and require remediation before redevelopment. This study evaluated the possibility of thermal treatment on remediation of cyanide-contaminated soils via batch heating experiments spanning a wide temperature range (200–500 °C). The change with operation variables of total cyanide and some reaction intermediates (e.g. CN−) was analyzed in order to elucidate the optimal variables that guarantee cyanide removal while generating no hazardous byproducts. Temperature, heating time and cyanide species have been found to be important parameters influencing removal/destruction of cyanide in soils. For soils bearing K3[Fe(CN)6] and K4[Fe(CN)6], a removal efficiency of >99.9% can be obtained with temperatures over 350 °C at 1 h, while for samples bearing Fe4[Fe(CN)6]3, a higher temperature (>450 °C) is needed to obtain an equivalent efficiency. During heating, the iron-cyanide complexes decomposed, releasing highly toxic free cyanides, which will subsequently be oxidized. However, a small percentage of free cyanide can always be detected as a result of incomplete oxidation, thus caution should be taken to minimize the accumulation of free cyanide during thermal treatment.
