[Objective] This study explored the influence of large strands shape on mechanical properties of decorative OSB to provide reference for the research and development of decorative OSB. [Method] Poplar wood strands were used as the test material, and the mechanical properties of OSB were used as evaluation indexes. The length (70-230 mm), width (10-58 mm) and thickness (0.3-1.1 mm) of strands were selected as influencing factors. The effects of three-dimensional particle size on modulus of rupture (MOR) and internal bonding strength (IB) of decorative OSB were studied by single factor tests. Then, the Box-Behnken response surface method was used to design the three-factor and three-level orthogonal rotation combination tests using length (110, 150 and 190 mm), width (34, 46 and 58 mm) and thickness (0.3, 0.5 and 0.7 mm) of the strands as independent variables. The MOR and IB of decorative OSB were used to optimize the size combination of large strands. [Result] The results of single factor test showed that the three-dimensional size of large strands had great influences on the mechanical properties of boards. When the length of large strands was 150 and 110 mm, the MOR and IB reached the maximum values of 17.61 and 0.63 MPa, respectively. When the width of large strands was 46 and 34 mm, the MOR and IB reached the maximum values of 17.05 and 0.67 MPa, respectively. When the thickness of large strands was 0.5 and 0.7 mm, the MOR and IB reached the maximum values of 24.65 and 0.62 MPa, respectively. The results of three-factor and three-level orthogonal rotation optimization showed that the fitting coefficients R² of MOR and IB regression models were 0.991 5 and 0.944 3, respectively. The length and thickness of large wood shavings had extremely significant (P< 0.01) and significant (P< 0.05) effects on MOR, respectively, and they both had extremely significant (P<0.01) effects on IB. The interaction analysis showed that the length and thickness interaction and the width and thickness interaction of large strands had significant influences on MOR (P< 0.05), and the length and thickness interaction had significant impacts on IB (P< 0.05). [Conclusion] The optimal shape parameters of large strands were 140 mm in length, 40 mm in width and 0.5 mm in thickness, and the MOR and IB of obtained decorative OSB were 20.31 MPa and 0.49 MPa, respectively.
