The electrochemical nitrate reduction reaction (NO3RR) is a promising approach to remove environmental pollutants while producing ammonia (NH3) under ambient conditions. Oxidized copper (O–Cu) with crystal structures has been widely investigated for NO3RR performance; however, its amorphous counterpart has rarely been explored. An amorphous oxidized copper (a-O–Cu) is designed to evaluate its NO3RR performance along with a control sample of crystalline oxidized copper (c-O–Cu) for comparison. At an applied potential of −0.53 V vs. RHE, a-O–Cu delivered an NH3 selectivity of 93.6% and an FE of 84.9%, which are 1.1 and 1.3 times higher than those of c-O–Cu, respectively. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the enhanced NO3RR performance of a-O–Cu is mainly attributed to its high water dissociation capability and amorphous structure-enabled high catalytic activity. The strategy demonstrated here can be extended to design other efficient metal-based amorphous electrocatalysts for NO3RR and C–N coupling reactions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background/Purpose: Gastrointestinal (GI) dysmotility is categorized by muscle or nerve dysfunctions in any portion of the GI tract, which leads to abnormalities in GI motor and sensory function. Symptoms may vary depending on the organ affected and can be debilitating. Treatment usually involves diet and lifestyle changes. Pharmacotherapy is limited in effectiveness with various side effects. Transcutaneous electrical stimulation (TES), a noninvasive, needleless technique that provides electrical stimulation using cutaneous non‐needle electrodes, has become increasingly popular. It has been shown to be beneficial in treating GI motility disorders. Methods: This review paper navigates through the different TES techniques, including transcutaneous peripheral nerve (vagal/sacral/tibial nerves) electrical stimulation, transcutaneous electrical acustimulation (stimulation via acupuncture point), transcutaneous interferential current therapy, and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation. Key Results: As we delve deeper, we explore the promising effects of TES on dysphagia, gastroesophageal reflux disease, functional dyspepsia, gastroparesis, postoperative ileus, constipation, and irritable bowel syndrome. The literature at hand speaks volumes about the therapeutic prowess of this noninvasive technique. Conclusion & Inferences: The time is ripe to evaluate further the full therapeutic potential of TES, a noninvasive, nonpharmaceutical, nonsurgical, and home‐based self‐administrative technique in managing GI motility disorders. Bigels are novel biphasic systems containing hydrogel and oleogel structures, which are designed to deliver multiple bioactives for synergistic activity. The current study develops bigels based on a carrageenan hydrogel and a monoglyceride (GMS) oleogel. Results show that the microstructures of bigels are facilely modified by two surface active ingredients (Tween 20 and polyglycerol polyricinoleate), which then influence the microstructures of the bigels. When curcumin and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) are delivered simultaneously, the bioactives work synergistically to slow thermal degradation. Simulated digestion tests indicate that the bigel structures can delay the release of the two bioactives in artificial saliva and simulated gastric fluid (SGF), and allow fast release in simulated intestinal fluid (SIF). DPPH and ABTS tests show the digested Tween 20 bigels containing EGCG and curcumin present synergistic antioxidant activity. Anticancer activity is evaluated in human colon adenocarcinoma HCT116, and the two bioactives work cooperatively to lower cell viability. The bioactives released from Tween 20 bigels have higher cytotoxicity than those from polyglycerol polyricinoleate bigels. The results reveal that facile structural design of bigels has the potential to achieve synergistic stability and bioactivity of co‐delivered bioactives, which is meaningful for the development of functional pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and food products. Significance: Ample evidence has demonstrated an important role for autophagy as either a protective mechanism or a cause for hepatotoxicity, denoting the likely potentials for targeting autophagy in the prevention or treatment of hepatotoxicity. Recent Advances: The functional role of autophagy in the pathogenesis of hepatotoxicity has been gradually recognized. Mechanistically, the autophagy-mediated protective or promoting effect on hepatotoxicity is attributed to its functions in regulation of oxidative stress, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, lipid metabolism, iron homeostasis, inflammatory response, and programmed cell death. Targeting autophagy as a novel strategy for fighting against hepatotoxicity has demonstrated encouraging efficacy in a number of models. Critical Issues: Clarifying the precise functional role of autophagy in different types of hepatotoxicity is essential for developing a type-specific autophagy-based intervention. Identification of molecular targets and novel agents for effectively and accurately manipulating autophagy is needed for better utilization of an autophagy-based approach to exert beneficial effects on hepatotoxicity. Future Directions: Well-designed clinical trials are needed to validate the efficacy of an autophagy-targeting intervention strategy for hepatotoxicity. Further studies should be also focused on developing novel autophagy-targeting agents that can accurately regulate autophagy based on the characteristics of each type of hepatotoxicity. Antioxid.
