Despite orders of magnitude difference in atmospheric reactivity and great diversity in biological functioning, little is known about monoterpene speciation in tropical forests. Here we report vertically resolved ambient air mixing ratios for 12 monoterpenes in a central Amazon rainforest including observations of the highly reactive cis-β-ocimene (160 ppt), trans-β-ocimene (79 ppt), and terpinolene (32 ppt) which accounted for an estimated 21% of total monoterpene composition yet 55% of the upper canopy monoterpene ozonolysis rate. All 12 monoterpenes showed a mixing ratio peak in the upper canopy, with three demonstrating subcanopy peaks in 7 of 11 profiles. Leaf level emissions of highly reactive monoterpenes accounted for up to 1.9% of photosynthesis confirming light-dependent emissions across several Amazon tree genera. These results suggest that highly reactive monoterpenes play important antioxidant roles during photosynthesis in plants and serve as near-canopy sources of secondary organic aerosol precursors through atmospheric photooxidation via ozonolysis.

Surface-to-atmosphere emissions of dimethyl sulfide (DMS) may impact global climate through the formation of gaseous sulfuric acid, which can yield secondary sulfate aerosols and contribute to new particle formation. While oceans are generally considered the dominant sources of DMS, a shortage of ecosystem observations prevents an accurate analysis of terrestrial DMS sources. Using mass spectrometry, we quantified ambient DMS mixing ratios within and above a primary rainforest ecosystem in the central Amazon Basin in real-time (2010-2011) and at high vertical resolution (2013-2014). Elevated but highly variable DMS mixing ratios were observed within the canopy, showing clear evidence of a net ecosystem source to the atmosphere during both day and night in both the dry and wet seasons. Periods of high DMS mixing ratios lasting up to 8 h (up to 160 parts per trillion (ppt)) often occurred within the canopy and near the surface during many evenings and nights. Daytime gradients showed mixing ratios (up to 80 ppt) peaking near the top of the canopy as well as near the ground following a rain event. The spatial and temporal distribution of DMS suggests that ambient levels and their potential climatic impacts are dominated by local soil and plant emissions. A soil source was confirmed by measurements of DMS emission fluxes from Amazon soils as a function of temperature and soil moisture. Furthermore, light- and temperature-dependent DMS emissions were measured from seven tropical tree species. Our study has important implications for understanding terrestrial DMS sources and their role in coupled land-atmosphere climate feedbacks.

Forest disturbances are major sources of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere, and therefore impact global climate. Biogeophysical attributes, such as surface albedo (reflectivity), further control the climate-regulating properties of forests. Using both tower-based and remotely sensed data sets, we show that natural disturbances from wildfire, beetle outbreaks, and hurricane wind throw can significantly alter surface albedo, and the associated radiative forcing either offsets or enhances the CO 2 forcing caused by reducing ecosystem carbon sequestration over multiple years. In the examined cases, the radiative forcing from albedo change is on the same order of magnitude as the CO 2 forcing. The net radiative forcing resulting from these two factors leads to a local heating effect in a hurricane-damaged mangrove forest in the subtropics, and a cooling effect following wildfire and mountain pine beetle attack in boreal forests with winter snow. Although natural forest disturbances currently represent less than half of gross forest cover loss, that area will probably increase in the future under climate change, making it imperative to represent these processes accurately in global climate models. © 2011 Blackwell Publishing Ltd.

A one-dimensional canopy model was used to quantify the impact of photochemistry in modifying biosphere-atmosphere exchange of trace gases. Canopy escape efficiencies, defined as the fraction of emission that escapes into the well-mixed boundary layer, were calculated for reactive terpene species. The modeled processes of emission, photochemistry, diffusive transport, and deposition were highly constrained based on intensive observations collected in a Loblolly Pine plantation at Duke Forest, North Carolina, during the CELTIC field study. Canopy top fluxes for isoprene and α,β-pinene were not significantly altered by photochemistry as calculated escape efficiencies were greater than 0.90 for both species, β-caryophyllene emission and photochemistry were added to the canopy model as a surrogate for the reactive sesquiterpene class of species, β-caryopyllene escape efficiencies of 0.30 were calculated for midday summertime conditions. Urbanization scenarios were also performed to assess the impact of pollution on modifying biosphere-atmosphere exchange. Modest changes in escape efficiencies were calculated for a wide range of anthropogenic hydrocarbon and NOx mixing ratios suggesting a simple parameterization of escape efficiency in terms of grid cell NOx may be possible for incorporating the impact of canopy scale photochemistry within biogenic emission processing systems for regional air quality and climate models. The inferred magnitude of sesquiterpene ozonolysis reactions has important implications on both daytime and nighttime radical formation in the canopy. Nonmethane hydrocarbons are ubiquitous trace atmospheric constituents yet they control the oxidation capacity of the atmosphere. Both anthropogenic and biogenic processes contribute to the release of hydrocarbons to the atmosphere. In this manuscript, the state of the science concerning biosynthesis, transport, and chemical transformation of hydrocarbons emitted by the terrestrial biosphere is reviewed. In particular, the focus is on isoprene, monoterpenes, and oxygenated hydrocarbons. The generated science during the last 10 years is reviewed to explain and quantify hydrocarbon emissions from vegetation and to discern impacts of biogenic hydrocarbons on local and regional atmospheric chemistry. Furthermore, the physiological and environmental processes controlling biosynthesis and production of hydrocarbon compounds are reported on. Many advances have been made on measurement and modeling approaches developed to quantify hydrocarbon emissions from leaves and forest ecosystems. A synthesis of the atmospheric chemistry of biogenic hydrocarbons and their role in the formation of oxidants and aerosols is presented. The integration of biogenic hydrocarbon kinetics and atmospheric physics into mathematical modeling systems is examined to assess the contribution of biogenic hydrocarbons to the formation of oxidants and aerosols, thereby allowing us to study their impacts on the earth's climate system and to develop strategies to reduce oxidant precursors in affected regions.

Introduction: The prognostic value of PAM50 intrinsic subtypes (IS), cell cycle, and immune-related gene expression in HR+ /HER2- advanced breast cancer (BC) treated with CDK4/6 inhibitors (CDK4/6i) and endocrine therapy (ET) in a first-line metastatic setting is unclear. This study evaluates these biomarkers in metastatic biopsies from patients diagnosed with HR+ /HER2- advanced BC., Methods: CDK-PREDICT study is a multicentric, ambispective observational cohort study conducted in six Spanish hospitals. It included patients diagnosed with HR+ /HER2- advanced BC treated in the first-line setting with CDK4/6i and ET. Baseline biopsies were obtained prior to treatment to determine research-based PAM50 IS, cell cycle and immune-related gene expression. The primary objective was to evaluate progression-free survival (PFS) differences among PAM50 IS using uni- and multivariable Cox regression models. Secondary objectives included overall survival (OS), overall response rate (ORR), and correlating cell cycle and immune response gene expression with PFS., Results: A total of 185 patients were included, with a median follow-up of 38.5 months. PAM50 luminal subtypes were predominant (82.7 %). Non-luminal subtypes showed significantly shorter median PFS (10.2 vs. 25.7 months; HR, 2.50; p < 0.001) and OS (32.3 vs. 58.1 months; HR, 2.54; p < 0.001) than luminal subtypes. Higher cell cycle and immune-related genes expression, such as CCNE1 and PDCD1, as well as tumor infiltrating lymphocytes were associated with poorer outcomes., Conclusions: This study confirms the independent prognostic value of PAM50 IS in HR+ /HER2- advanced BC treated with CDK4/6i and ET. Purpose: To obtain tolerance levels for working with the EPID-based EPIgray in vivo dosimetry system., Methods: Dose differences between planned and delivered treatments in various anatomical areas, including the gastro-intestinal, urological, rectum and anal canal, gynecological, breast, head and neck, and lung regions, were analyzed across 5,791 fractions. Whether or not the dose differences at each location are symmetrical with respect to zero and adhere to a normal distribution is then checked. Linear regression analysis was applied to check for temporal drift in lung and head and neck treatments. A water equivalent phantom and another with a water-polystyrene interface is used to estimate the dose difference intrinsic to the measurement system. Furthermore, appropriate dose distribution in two treatments is verified using radiochoromic film., Results: Normal distribution was not observed in any region, and only two showed symmetry around zero. The mean dose differences were: (0.33 ± 6.32) % for the gastro-intestinal system, (-1.31 ± 3.16) % for the gynaecological area, (0.79 ± 4.55) % for VMAT-breast, (3.48 ± 4.00) % for 3DCRT-breast, (0.70 ± 3.20) % for head and neck, (5.63 ± 5.48)% for lung, (-1.36 ± 2.98) % for rectum and anal canal, and (0.13 ± 3.53) % for the urological system., Conclusion: EPIgray should support tolerance levels asymmetric with respect to zero, given the positive deviation observed in mean dose for lung, breast, and head and neck regions. Background: Arterial thrombosis is an uncommon complication in cancer patients, often overshadowed by venous thromboembolic events. Its occurrence in patients with solid tumors on active antineoplastic treatment poses a significant clinical challenge., Key Clinical Question: Given the lack of consensus on the optimal therapy for arterial thrombosis in cancer patients, the best practices for managing an aortic thrombus, and the benefit of low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) must be reviewed., Clinical Approach: We present the case of a 70-year-old female with stage IVA lung adenocarcinoma who developed an aortic thrombus during chemo-immunotherapy. The thrombus was successfully treated with LMWH, avoiding further complications, and allowing for the continuation of her cancer therapy., Conclusions: This case highlights the importance of early detection and management of arterial thrombus in cancer patients. Human leukocyte antigens (HLAs) are essential regulators of immune responses against cancer, with classical HLAs well-documented for their role in tumor recognition and immune surveillance. In recent years, non-classical HLAs-including HLA-E, HLA-F, HLA-G, and HLA-H-have emerged as critical players in the immune landscape of cancer due to their diverse and less conventional functions in immune modulation. These molecules exhibit unique mechanisms that enable tumors to escape immune detection, promote tumor progression, and contribute to therapeutic resistance. This review provides a comprehensive examination of the current understanding of non-classical HLAs in solid cancers, focusing on their specific roles in shaping the tumor microenvironment and influencing immune responses. By analyzing how HLA-E, HLA-F, HLA-G, and HLA-H modulate interactions with immune cells, such as T cells, natural killer cells, and antigen-presenting cells, we highlight key pathways through which these molecules contribute to immune evasion and metastasis. Additionally, we review promising therapeutic strategies aimed at targeting non-classical HLAs, including emerging immunotherapies that could potentially enhance cancer treatment outcomes by reversing immune suppression within tumors. Understanding the influence of these non-classical HLAs in solid cancers may offer new insights into cancer immunology and may lead to the development of innovative and more effective immunotherapeutic approaches. This review underscores the importance of non-classical HLAs as potential therapeutic targets, providing a necessary foundation for future studies in the evolving field of cancer immunotherapy.

Background and Objectives: Second-line treatment for small-cell lung cancer (SCLC) is primarily guided by the time elapsed since the last platinum dose. Rechallenge with carboplatin and etoposide has demonstrated superior outcomes compared to topotecan if the platinum-free interval (PFI) is longer than 90 days and is considered the standard of care. However, these findings predate the chemo-immunotherapy era. This study investigates the effectiveness of the rechallenge strategy after chemo-immunotherapy in a real-world setting., Design and Methods: We retrospectively reviewed patients with the extensive stage (ES)-SCLC who received rechallenge with carboplatin and etoposide after first-line chemoimmunotherapy between September 2020 and August 2023 in nine European centres. Demographic and clinical data were collected and analysed., Results: A total of 93 patients were included. Sixty-six (71%) patients had a PFI between 3 and 6 months. Consolidation thoracic radiotherapy and prophylactic cranial irradiation had been administered in 31 (33.3%) patients and 20 (21.5%) patients, respectively. Overall response rate was 59.1%. Median progression-free survival (PFS) was 5 months (95% confidence interval (CI) 4.3-5.7) and median overall survival (OS) was 7 months (95% CI 5.7-8.3). Notably, PFS and OS were not different according to PFI (3-6 m vs > 6 m)., Conclusion: Rechallenge with carboplatin and etoposide is a valid second-line option in patients with ES-SCLC whose disease progresses after first-line chemoimmunotherapy. Oncogene-negative, PDL1-negative metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) presents significant treatment challenges due to its complexity and resistance to conventional therapies. The case report presented addresses a 55-year-old male patient with oncogene-negative, PDL1-negative stage IV lung adenocarcinoma, showcasing an exceptional complete metabolic response to a multimodality treatment combining double immune checkpoint inhibition (ICI) and chemotherapy, followed by salvage stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT). The patient underwent a treatment regimen incorporating two cycles of carboplatin, pemetrexed, nivolumab, and ipilimumab followed by nivolumab, and ipilimumab maintenance. After a partial response, SBRT was applied to persistent lesions, achieving a complete metabolic response. Importance: Stage at diagnosis is a key prognostic factor for cancer survival., Objective: To assess the global distribution of breast cancer stage by country, age group, calendar period, and socioeconomic status using population-based data., Data Sources: A systematic search of MEDLINE and Web of Science databases and registry websites and gray literature was conducted for articles or reports published between January 1, 2000, and June 20, 2022., Study Selection: Reports on stage at diagnosis for individuals with primary breast cancer (C50) from a population-based cancer registry were included., Data Extraction and Synthesis: Study characteristics and results of eligible studies were independently extracted by 2 pairs of reviewers (J.D.B.F., A.D.A., A.M., R.S., and F.G.). Stage-specific proportions were extracted and cancer registry data quality and risk of bias were assessed. National pooled estimates were calculated for subnational or annual data sets using a hierarchical rule of the most relevant and high-quality data to avoid duplicates., Main Outcomes and Measures: The proportion of women with breast cancer by (TNM Classification of Malignant Tumors or the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program [SEER]) stage group., Results: Data were available for 2.4 million women with breast cancer from 81 countries. Globally, the proportion of cases with distant metastatic breast cancer at diagnosis was high in sub-Saharan Africa, ranging from 5.6% to 30.6% and low in North America ranging from 0.0% to 6.0%. The proportion of patients diagnosed with distant metastatic disease decreased over the past 2 decades from around 3.8% to 35.8% (early 2000s) to 3.2% to 11.6% (2015 onwards), yet stabilization or slight increases were also observed. Older age and lower socioeconomic status had the largest proportion of cases diagnosed with distant metastatic stage ranging from 2.0% to 15.7% among the younger to 4.1% to 33.9% among the oldest age group, and from 1.7% to 8.3% in the least disadvantaged groups to 2.8% to 11.4% in the most disadvantaged groups., Conclusions and Relevance: Effective policy and interventions have resulted in decreased proportions of women diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer at diagnosis in high-income countries, yet inequality persists, which needs to be addressed through increased awareness of breast cancer symptoms and early detection. Improving global coverage and quality of population-based cancer registries, including the collection of standardized stage data, is key to monitoring progress.

Purpose: The CyberKnife quality assurance (QA) program relies mainly on the use of radiochromic film (RCF). We aimed at evaluating high-resolution arrays of detectors as an alternative to films for CyberKnife machine QA., Methods: This study will test the SRS Mapcheck (Sun Nuclear, Melbourne, Florida, USA) diode array and its own software, which allows three tests of the CyberKnife QA program to be performed. The first one is a geometrical accuracy test based on the delivery of two orthogonal beams (Automated Quality Assurance, AQA). Besides comparing the constancy and repeatability of both methods, known errors will be introduced to check their sensitivity. The second checks the constancy of the iris collimator field sizes (Iris QA). Changes in the field sizes will be introduced to study the array sensitivity. The last test checks the correct positioning of the multileaf collimator (MLC). It will be tested introducing known systematic displacements to whole banks and to single leaves., Results: The results of the RCF and diode array were equivalent (maximum differences of 0.18 ± 0.14 mm) for the AQA test, showing the array a higher reproducibility. When known errors were introduced, both methods behaved linearly with similar slopes. Regarding Iris QA, the array measurements are highly linear when changes in the field sizes are introduced. Linear regressions show slopes of 0.96-1.17 with r 2 above 0.99 in all field sizes. Diode array seems to detect changes of 0.1 mm. In MLC QA, systematic errors of the whole bank of leaves were not detected by the array, while single leaf errors were detected., Conclusions: The diode array is sensitive and accurate in the AQA and Iris QA tests, which give us the possibility of substituting RCF with a diode array. QA would be performed faster than using the film procedure, obtaining reliable results. Purpose: To study and analyze the effect of the use of a thin guide-wire instead of a Foley catheter for urethral definition in prostate stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) treatments and to compare treatment parameters in both situations., Material and Methods: Thirty-seven prostate SBRT patients were employed in this study. A Foley catheter was employed in nine of them, and a guide-wire was employed in the other 28 patients. For each of the 28 patients in which the guide-wire was employed, a comparison between urethral positions in both situations was performed, allowing for a margin definition of the urethra when a Foley catheter was employed. Displacements of the prostate during treatment were obtained, allowing for an analysis of prostate positions in both situations. Also, different treatment parameters such as the number of treatment interruptions, couch movements performed, and x-rays needed were gathered., Results: Large differences between urethral positions can be found in the anterior-posterior (AP) directions compared to those in the lateral (LAT) direction. Differences are also larger in areas closer to the base of the prostate, where margins applied in the case of using a Foley catheter are 16 mm with a mean displacement of 6 mm in the posterior direction. No differences in the treatment parameters were found during treatment in both situations. The difference found in absolute prostate pitch rotations suggests that the Foley catheter provokes a shift of the prostate position, which does not occur when employing the guide-wire., Conclusions: Foley catheters shift the urethral position, making them a wrong surrogate of the urethra when no catheters are present. The margins needed to assess uncertainties introduced by the use of a Foley catheter are larger than those usually applied. Shared positive activities, such as engaging conversations and interactive play, enhance relationships and buffer the consequences of negative interactions. The current research tested whether affectionate touch (a prime target for intervention) encourages people to prioritize other shared positive activities and to view shared activities more positively. In a pre-registered dyadic diary study of married couples (Study 1), greater affectionate touch on one day predicted increases in shared positive activities concurrently and prospectively. In a pre-registered dyadic experiment (Study 2), a brief affectionate touch intervention increased self-reported (but not observer-rated) shared positive activities immediately and increased shared positive activities over the following week for people who do not typically engage in such activities. Participants assigned to touch (particularly those low in attachment anxiety) also perceived their partners more positively during shared activities. These results suggest that touch may facilitate positive relationship experiences broadly and supports a theoretical model of affectionate touch.

Introduction: Identification of modulators of the immune response with inhibitory properties that could be susceptible for therapeutic intervention is a key goal in cancer research. An example is the human leukocyte antigen G (HLA-G), a nonclassical major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I molecule, involved in cancer progression., Methods: In this article we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis on the association between HLA-G expression and outcome in solid tumors. This study was performed in accordance with PRISMA guidelines and registered in PROSPERO., Results: A total of 25 studies met the inclusion criteria. These studies comprised data from 4871 patients reporting overall survival (OS), and 961 patients, reporting disease free survival (DFS). HLA-G expression was associated with worse OS (HR 2.09, 95% CI = 1.67 to 2.63; P < .001), that was higher in gastric (HR = 3.40; 95% CI = 1.64 to 7.03), pancreatic (HR = 1.72; 95% CI = 0.79 to 3.74) and colorectal (HR = 1.55; 95% CI = 1.16 to 2.07) cancer. No significant differences were observed between the most commonly utilized antibody (4H84) and other methods of detection. Neuroendocrine carcinomas (NECs) of the head and neck (HN) account for <1% of HN cancers (HNCs), with a 5-year overall survival (OS) <20%. This is a retrospective study of HN NECs diagnosed at our institution between 2005 and 2022. Immunohistochemistry and next-generation sequencing (NGS) were used to evaluate neuroendocrine markers, tumor mutational burden (TMB), mutational profiles and T-cell receptor repertoires. Eleven patients with high-grade HN NECs were identified (male:female ratio 6:5; median age 61 (Min-Max: 31-86)): nasoethmoidal (3), parotid gland (3), submaxillary gland (1), larynx (3) and base of tongue (1). Among n = 8 stage II/IVA/B, all received (chemo)radiotherapy with/without prior surgery or induction chemotherapy, with complete response in 7/8 (87.5%). Among n = 6 recurrent/metastatic patients, three received anti-PD1 (nivolumab (2), pembrolizumab (1)): two achieved partial responses lasting 24 and 10 months. After a median follow-up of 30 and 23.5 months since diagnosis and since recurrent/metastatic, median OS was not reached. Median TMB ( n = 7) was 6.72 Mut/Mb. The most common pathogenic variants were TP53, HNF1A, SMARCB1, CDKN2A, PIK3CA, RB1 and MYC. There were 224 median TCR clones ( n = 5 pts). In one patient, TCR clones increased from 59 to 1446 after nivolumab. HN NECs may achieve long-lasting survival with multimodality treatment. They harbor moderate-high TMBs and large TCR repertoires, which may explain responses to anti-PD1 agents in two patients and justify the study of immunotherapy in this disease.

Patients with antibody deficiency disorders, such as primary immunodeficiency (PID) or secondary immunodeficiency (SID) to B-cell lymphoproliferative disorder (B-CLPD), are two groups vulnerable to developing the severe or chronic form of coronavirus disease caused by SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19). The data on adaptive immune responses against SARS-CoV-2 are well described in healthy donors, but still limited in patients with antibody deficiency of a different cause. Herein, we analyzed spike-specific IFN-γ and anti-spike IgG antibody responses at 3 to 6 months after exposure to SARS-CoV-2 derived from vaccination and/or infection in two cohorts of immunodeficient patients (PID vs. SID) compared to healthy controls (HCs). Pre-vaccine anti-SARS-CoV-2 cellular responses before vaccine administration were measured in 10 PID patients. Baseline cellular responses were detectable in 4 out of 10 PID patients who had COVID-19 prior to vaccination, perceiving an increase in cellular responses after two-dose vaccination ( p < 0.001). Adequate specific cellular responses were observed in 18 out of 20 (90%) PID patients, in 14 out of 20 (70%) SID patients and in 74 out of 81 (96%) HCs after vaccination (and natural infection in some cases). Specific IFN-γ response was significantly higher in HC with respect to PID (1908.5 mUI/mL vs. 1694.1 mUI/mL; p = 0.005). Whereas all SID and HC patients mounted a specific humoral immune response, only 80% of PID patients showed positive anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG. The titer of anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG was significantly lower in SID compared with HC patients ( p = 0.040), without significant differences between PID and HC patients ( p = 0.123) and between PID and SID patients ( p =0.683). High proportions of PID and SID patients showed adequate specific cellular responses to receptor binding domain (RBD) neoantigen, with a divergence between the two arms of the adaptive immune response in PID and SID patients. We also focused on the correlation of protection of positive SARS-CoV-2 cellular response to omicron exposure: 27 out of 81 (33.3%) HCs referred COVID-19 detected by PCR or antigen test, 24 with a mild course, 1 with moderate symptoms and the remaining 2 with bilateral pneumonia that were treated in an outpatient basis. Our results might support the relevance of these immunological studies to determine the correlation of protection with severe disease and for deciding the need for additional boosters on a personalized basis. Follow-up studies are required to evaluate the duration and variability in the immune response to COVID-19 vaccination or infection.

Introduction: Evidence is scant regarding the long-term humoral and cellular responses Q7 triggered by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) mRNA vaccines in cancer patients after repeated booster doses. The possibility of T-cell exhaustion following these booster doses in this population has not yet been fully studied and remains uncertain., Methods: In this single-center prospective observational study, we explored the specific humoral and cellular response to S1 antigen in 36 patients with solid malignancies at baseline, and after the second and third doses of the mRNA-1273 vaccine., Results: A dual behavior was observed: 24 (66.7%) patients showed partial specific IFN-γ response after the second dose that was further enhanced after the third dose; and 11 (30.5%) already showed an optimal response after the second dose and experienced a marked fall-off of specific IFN-γ production after the third (4 patients negativization), which might suggest T cell exhaustion due to repetitive priming to the same antigen. One (2.8%) patient had persistently negative responses after all three doses. Seroconversion occurred in all patients after the second dose. We then studied circulating exhausted CD8+ T-cells in 4 patients from each of the two response patterns, those with increase and those with decrease in cellular response after the third booster. The patients with decreased cellular response after the booster had a higher expression of PD1 + CD8 + and CD57 + PD1 + CD8 + exhausted T cells compared with those with an increased cellular response both in vivo and in vitro . The proportion of PD1 + CD8 + and CD57 + PD1 + CD8 + exhausted T cells inversely correlated with IFN-γ production., Discussion: Our preliminary data show that the two-dose SARS-CoV-2 vaccine regimen was beneficial in all cancer patients of our study. An additional booster seems to be beneficial in suboptimal vaccine seroconverters, in contrast to maximal responders that might develop exhaustion. Our data should be interpreted with caution given the small sample size and highlight the urgent need to validate our results in other independent and larger cohorts. Aflibercept is an antiangiogenic agent used in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer who have progressed to a first-line oxaliplatin-based regimen. The main adverse effects (AEs) of antiangiogenic agents are fatigue, asthenia, anorexia, hypertension, proteinuria, urinary tract infection, diarrhea, and neutropenia. Other AEs, such as hemorrhage, thromboembolic events, and gastrointestinal perforation, are much less frequent. Nasal septal perforation caused by antiangiogenic agents is even rarer. The published literature on this subject is scarce. Here, we report the case of a 54-year-old male with metastatic colorectal cancer undergoing treatment with leucovorin, fluorouracil (5-FU), irinotecan, and aflibercept who presented with epistaxis and nasal congestion. An otolaryngologist performed a rhinoscopy that revealed a perforation of the nasal septum. Aflibercept was withdrawn first, and local treatment was applied with lubricant and antibacterial lotions. It was considered a non-life-threatening side effect, and given the high risk of not continuing treatment in this patient with a recent recurrence, aflibercept was reintroduced in combination with leucovorin, 5-FU, and irinotecan. The patient continued local treatment and follow-up with medical oncology and otolaryngology with gradual improvement of symptoms. Background: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) vaccines efficacy and safety have been tested in phase 3 studies in which cancer patients were not included or were underrepresented. Methods: The objective of this study is to evaluate the safety profile of the mRNA-1273 vaccine across cancer patients and its relationship to patients' demographics. We selected from our records all 18-years or older solid cancer patients under active treatment vaccinated with the complete three-dose schedule mRNA-1273 vaccine whose adverse drug reactions (ADRs)  after each dose were recorded. Medical records were reviewed retrospectively to collect data between April 19, 2021, and December 31, 2021. Patients with documented previous infection by SARS-Cov-2 were excluded. Results: A total of 93 patients met the inclusion criteria. Local ADRs were reported more frequently after the first and second dose than after the third (41.9%, 43% and 31.1% of the patients respectively), while systemic ADRs followed the opposite pattern (16.1%, 34.4% and 52.6% of the patients respectively). We found a statistically significant association between sex and systemic adverse reactions after the third dose, p < 0.001 and between systemic adverse reactions after the second dose and systemic adverse reactions after the third dose, p = 0.001 A significant linear trend, p = 0.012, with a higher Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) score associated with a lower proportion of patients suffering from systemic side effects was found. Women had 5.79 times higher odds to exhibit systemic ADRs after the third dose (p=0.01) compared to males. Increasing age was associated with a decreased likelihood of exhibiting ADRs (p=0.016). Conclusion:  The mRNA-1273 vaccine shows a tolerable safety profile. The likelihood of ADRs appears to be associated with gender and age. Its association with ECOG scores is less evident. Background: Human bocavirus (HBoV) is a viral pathogen from the genus Bocaparvovirus (family Parvoviridae , subfamily Parvovirinae ) discovered in 2005. Most of available literature is about HBoV in children and adults with hematological malignancies and in otherwise healthy children with respiratory infections. Information regarding infection in the adult population with solid tumors is scarce. Case Report: We report the case of a 51-year-old male with metastatic castration resistant prostate cancer undergoing chemotherapy treatment who presented with fever, dyspnea, dry cough, and pleuritic pain. Imaging techniques showed signs of congestive heart failure. Symptoms, laboratory tests and echocardiography revealed a more probable infectious etiology. Antibiotic therapy was started. A polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test of nasopharyngeal exudate for respiratory viruses was positive for HBoV. The rest of the microbiological tests were negative. Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) was performed. Bacterial culture of BAL was negative while respiratory virus PCR confirmed positivity for HBoV. Antibiotic therapy was discontinued. The patient gradually recovered. Conclusions: Emerging infectious diseases are a notorious threat for immunocompromised populations such as solid tumor patients. This case is unique because to our knowledge this is the first case report article of HBoV in a solid tumor patient and because imaging techniques exhibited signs of congestive heart failure that did not correlate with the rest of the tests. It shows that unusual pathogens should be considered when managing serious clinical complications with uncommon presentations in cancer patients. Isoprene is the dominant non-methane organic compound emitted to the atmosphere 1-3 . It drives ozone and aerosol production, modulates atmospheric oxidation and interacts with the global nitrogen cycle 4-8 . Isoprene emissions are highly uncertain 1,9 , as is the nonlinear chemistry coupling isoprene and the hydroxyl radical, OH-its primary sink 10-13 . Here we present global isoprene measurements taken from space using the Cross-track Infrared Sounder. Together with observations of formaldehyde, an isoprene oxidation product, these measurements provide constraints on isoprene emissions and atmospheric oxidation. We find that the isoprene-formaldehyde relationships measured from space are broadly consistent with the current understanding of isoprene-OH chemistry, with no indication of missing OH recycling at low nitrogen oxide concentrations. We analyse these datasets over four global isoprene hotspots in relation to model predictions, and present a quantification of isoprene emissions based directly on satellite measurements of isoprene itself. A major discrepancy emerges over Amazonia, where current underestimates of natural nitrogen oxide emissions bias modelled OH and hence isoprene. Over southern Africa, we find that a prominent isoprene hotspot is missing from bottom-up predictions. A multi-year analysis sheds light on interannual isoprene variability, and suggests the influence of the El Niño/Southern Oscillation.

Inland sources of particulate chloride for atmospheric nitryl chloride (ClNO 2 ) formation remain unknown and unquantified, hindering air quality assessments. Globally each winter, tens of millions of tons of road salt are spread on roadways for deicing. Here, we identify road salt aerosol as the primary chloride aerosol source, accounting for 80-100% of ClNO 2 formation, at an inland urban area in the wintertime. This study provides experimental evidence of the connection between road salt and air quality through the production of this important reservoir for nitrogen oxides and chlorine radicals, which significantly impact atmospheric composition and pollutant fates. A numerical model was employed to quantify the contributions of chloride sources to ClNO 2 production. The traditional method for simulating ClNO 2 considers chloride to be homogeneously distributed across the atmospheric particle population; yet, we show that only a fraction of the particulate surface area contains chloride. Our new single-particle parametrization considers this heterogeneity, dramatically lowering overestimations of ClNO 2 levels that have been routinely reported using the prevailing methods. Atomic chlorine (Cl) is a strong atmospheric oxidant that shortens the lifetimes of pollutants and methane in the springtime Arctic, where the molecular halogens Cl 2 and BrCl are known Cl precursors. Here, we quantify the contributions of reactive chlorine trace gases and present the first observations, to our knowledge, of ClNO 2 (another Cl precursor), N 2 O 5 , and HO 2 NO 2 in the Arctic. During March - May 2016 near Utqiaġvik, Alaska, up to 21 ppt of ClNO 2 , 154 ppt of Cl 2 , 27 ppt of ClO, 71 ppt of N 2 O 5 , 21 ppt of BrCl, and 153 ppt of HO 2 NO 2 were measured using chemical ionization mass spectrometry. The main Cl precursor was calculated to be Cl 2 (up to 73%) in March, while BrCl was a greater contributor (63%) in May, when total Cl production was lower. Elevated levels of ClNO 2 , N 2 O 5 , Cl 2 , and HO 2 NO 2 coincided with pollution influence from the nearby town of Utqiaġvik and the North Slope of Alaska (Prudhoe Bay) Oilfields. We propose a coupled mechanism linking NO x with Arctic chlorine chemistry. Enhanced Cl 2 was likely the result of the multiphase reaction of Cl - (aq) with ClONO 2 , formed from the reaction of ClO and NO 2 . In addition to this NO x -enhanced chlorine chemistry, Cl 2 and BrCl were observed under clean Arctic conditions from snowpack photochemical production. These connections between NO x and chlorine chemistry, and the role of snowpack recycling, are important given increasing shipping and fossil fuel extraction predicted to accompany Arctic sea ice loss.

One of the least understood aspects in atmospheric chemistry is how urban emissions influence the formation of natural organic aerosols, which affect Earth's energy budget. The Amazon rainforest, during its wet season, is one of the few remaining places on Earth where atmospheric chemistry transitions between preindustrial and urban-influenced conditions. Here, we integrate insights from several laboratory measurements and simulate the formation of secondary organic aerosols (SOA) in the Amazon using a high-resolution chemical transport model. Simulations show that emissions of nitrogen-oxides from Manaus, a city of ~2 million people, greatly enhance production of biogenic SOA by 60-200% on average with peak enhancements of 400%, through the increased oxidation of gas-phase organic carbon emitted by the forests. Simulated enhancements agree with aircraft measurements, and are much larger than those reported over other locations. The implication is that increasing anthropogenic emissions in the future might substantially enhance biogenic SOA in pristine locations like the Amazon.

Students' worries about transitioning to college are correlated with long-term reduced psychological well-being, so we investigated how psychological need satisfaction might mitigate millennials' worries about college. As parents can support or undermine their children's basic needs, we also examined the influence of autonomy-supportive and helicopter parenting during the transition. Additionally, we compared these outcomes between first- and continuing-generation students. Incoming college students (N = 355) completed measures of parental relationship need satisfaction, parental involvement, worries about college, and family achievement guilt. Higher need satisfaction in the parental relationship was associated with reduced worries and feelings of achievement guilt for both first- and continuing-generation students. Autonomy-supportive parenting moderated the relationship between autonomy and millennials' worries about college. Helicopter parenting did not moderate any of the relationships examined in this study but was positively associated with students' transition worries and achievement guilt. We discuss these findings in the context of self-determination theory.

We make future projections of seasonal precipitation characteristics in southern Florida using a statistical downscaling approach based on Self Organized Maps. Our approach is applied separately to each three-month season: September-November; December-February; March-May; and June-August. We make use of 19 different simulations from the Coupled Model Inter-comparison Project, phase 5 (CMIP5) and generate an ensemble of 1500 independent daily precipitation surrogates for each model simulation, yielding a grand ensemble of 28,500 total realizations for each season. The center and moments (25%ile and 75%ile) of this distribution are used to characterize most likely scenarios and their associated uncertainties. This approach is applied to 30-year windows of daily mean precipitation for both the CMIP5 historical simulations (1976-2005) and the CMIP5 future (RCP 4.5) projections. Elevated water vapor (H 2 O v ) mole fractions were occassionally observed downwind of Indianapolis, IN, and the Washington, D.C.-Baltimore, MD, area during airborne mass balance experiments conducted during winter months between 2012 and 2015. On days when an urban H 2 O v excess signal was observed, H 2 O v emissions estimates range between 1.6 × 10 4 and 1.7 × 10 5 kg s -1 , and account for up to 8.4% of the total (background + urban excess) advected flow of atmospheric boundary layer H 2 O v from the urban study sites. Estimates of H 2 O v emissions from combustion sources and electricity generation facility cooling towers are 1-2 orders of magnitude smaller than the urban H 2 O v emission rates estimated from observations. Instances of urban H 2 O v enhancement could be a result of differences in snowmelt and evaporation rates within the urban area, due in part to larger wintertime anthropogenic heat flux and land cover differences, relative to surrounding rural areas. More study is needed to understand why the urban H 2 O v excess signal is observed on some days, and not others. Radiative transfer modeling indicates that the observed urban enhancements in H 2 O v and other greenhouse gas mole fractions contribute only 0.1°C day -1 to the urban heat island at the surface. This integrated warming through the boundary layer is offset by longwave cooling by H 2 O v at the top of the boundary layer. While the radiative impacts of urban H 2 O v emissions do not meaningfully influence urban heat island intensity, urban H 2 O v emissions may have the potential to alter downwind aerosol and cloud properties., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing financial interest.

Global changes are causing broad-scale shifts in vegetation communities worldwide, including coastal habitats where the borders between mangroves and salt marsh are in flux. Coastal habitats provide numerous ecosystem services of high economic value, but the consequences of variation in mangrove cover are poorly known. We experimentally manipulated mangrove cover in large plots to test a set of linked hypotheses regarding the effects of changes in mangrove cover. We found that changes in mangrove cover had strong effects on microclimate, plant community, sediment accretion, soil organic content, and bird abundance within 2 yr. At higher mangrove cover, wind speed declined and light interception by vegetation increased. Air and soil temperatures had hump-shaped relationships with mangrove cover. The cover of salt marsh plants decreased at higher mangrove cover. Wrack cover, the distance that wrack was distributed from the water's edge, and sediment accretion decreased at higher mangrove cover. Soil organic content increased with mangrove cover. Wading bird abundance decreased at higher mangrove cover. Many of these relationships were non-linear, with the greatest effects when mangrove cover varied from zero to intermediate values, and lesser effects when mangrove cover varied from intermediate to high values. Temporal and spatial variation in measured variables often peaked at intermediate mangrove cover, with ecological consequences that are largely unexplored. Because different processes varied in different ways with mangrove cover, the "optimum" cover of mangroves from a societal point of view will depend on which ecosystem services are most desired., (© 2016 by the Ecological Society of America.)

The volatile gas isoprene is emitted in teragrams per annum quantities from the terrestrial biosphere and exerts a large effect on atmospheric chemistry. Isoprene is made primarily from recently fixed photosynthate; however, alternate carbon sources play an important role, particularly when photosynthate is limiting. We examined the relative contribution of these alternate carbon sources under changes in light and temperature, the two environmental conditions that have the strongest influence over isoprene emission. Using a novel real-time analytical approach that allowed us to examine dynamic changes in carbon sources, we observed that relative contributions do not change as a function of light intensity. We found that the classical uncoupling of isoprene emission from net photosynthesis at elevated leaf temperatures is associated with an increased contribution of alternate carbon. We also observed a rapid compensatory response where alternate carbon sources compensated for transient decreases in recently fixed carbon during thermal ramping, thereby maintaining overall increases in isoprene production rates at high temperatures. Photorespiration is known to contribute to the decline in net photosynthesis at high leaf temperatures. A reduction in the temperature at which the contribution of alternate carbon sources increased was observed under photorespiratory conditions, while photosynthetic conditions increased this temperature. Feeding [2-(13)C]glycine (a photorespiratory intermediate) stimulated emissions of [(13)C1-5]isoprene and (13)CO2, supporting the possibility that photorespiration can provide an alternate source of carbon for isoprene synthesis. The North China Plain (NCP), to the east of the Loess Plateau, experiences severe regional air pollution. During the daytime in the summer, the Loess Plateau acts as an elevated heat source. The impacts of such a thermal effect on meteorological phenomena (e.g., waves, precipitation) in this region have been discussed. However, its impacts on the atmospheric boundary layer structure and air quality have not been reported. It is hypothesized that the thermal effect of the Plateau likely modulates the boundary layer structure and ambient concentrations of pollutants over the NCP under certain meteorological conditions. Thus, this study investigates such effect and its impacts using measurements and three-dimensional model simulations. It is found that in the presence of daytime westerly wind in the lower troposphere (~1 km above the NCP), warmer air above the Loess Plateau was transported over the NCP and imposed a thermal inversion above the mixed boundary layer, which acted as a lid and suppressed the mixed layer growth. As a result, pollutants accumulated in the shallow mixed layer and ozone was efficiently produced. The downward branch of the thermally-induced Mountain-Plains Solenoid circulation over the NCP contributed to enhancing the capping inversion and exacerbating air pollution. Previous studies have reported that low mixed layer, a factor for elevated pollution in the NCP, may be caused by aerosol scattering and absorption of solar radiation, frontal inversion, and large scale subsidence. The present study revealed a different mechanism (i.e., westerly warm advection) for the suppression of the mixed layer in summer NCP, which caused severe O3 pollution. Introduction: The analysis of body composition through direct and indirect methods allows the study of the various components of the human body, becoming the central hub for assessing nutritional status., Objective: The objective of the study was to develop equations for predicting body fat% from circumferential body arm, waist and calf and propose percentiles to diagnose the nutritional status of school children of both sexes aged 4-10 years., Methods: We selected intentionally (non-probabilistic) 515 children, 261 children and 254 being girls belonging to Program interaction and development of children and adolescents from the State University of Campinas (Sao Paulo, Brazil). Anthropometric variables were evaluated for weight, height, triceps and subscapular skinfolds and body circumferences of arm, waist and calf, and the% fat determined by the equation proposed by Boileau, Lohman and Slaughter (1985). Through regression method 2 were generated equations to predict the percentage of fat from the body circumferences, the equations 1 and 2 were validated by cross validation method., Results: The equations showed high predictive values ranging with a R² = 64-69%. Chemical signals play important roles in ecological interactions but are vulnerable to perturbation by air pollution. In polluted air masses, signals may travel shorter distances before being destroyed by chemical reactions with pollutants, thus losing their specificity. To determine which scent-mediated interactions are likely to be affected, we review existing literature to build a picture of what chemicals are commonly found in such interactions and the spatial scales at which interactions occur. We find that pollination, attraction of natural enemies of plant pests, aggregation pheromones, and mate attraction are likely to be affected. We review the scant literature on this topic and extend the hypothesis to include heretofore unexplored interactions. New research should investigate whether air pollution deleteriously affects populations of organisms that rely on scent plumes. Additionally, we need to investigate whether or not breakdown products created by the reaction of signaling chemicals with pollutants can provide usable signals, and whether or not there has been adaptation on the part of scent emitters or receivers to use either breakdown products or more robust chemical signals. The proposed research will necessarily draw on tools from atmospheric science, evolutionary biology, and ecology in furthering our understanding of the ecological implications of how air pollution modifies the scentscape.

We tested the hypothesis that the date of the onset of net carbon uptake by temperate deciduous forest canopies corresponds with the time when the mean daily soil temperature equals the mean annual air temperature. The hypothesis was tested using over 30 site-years of data from 12 field sites where CO(2) exchange is being measured continuously with the eddy covariance method. The sites spanned the geographic range of Europe, North America and Asia and spanned a climate space of 16 degrees C in mean annual temperature. The tested phenology rule was robust and worked well over a 75 day range of the initiation of carbon uptake, starting as early as day 88 near Ione, California to as late as day 147 near Takayama, Japan. Overall, we observed that 64% of variance in the timing when net carbon uptake started was explained by the date when soil temperature matched the mean annual air temperature. We also observed a strong correlation between mean annual air temperature and the day that a deciduous forest starts to be a carbon sink. Consequently we are able to provide a simple phenological rule that can be implemented in regional carbon balance models and be assessed with soil and temperature outputs produced by climate and weather models.

The goal of this study is to investigate the impact of deforestation on ozone dynamics and deposition in the Brazilian Amazon basin. This goal is accomplished through i) analyses of ozone levels and deposition rates at a deforested site during the rainy season; and ii) comparisons of these data with similar information derived at a forest. At the pasture site maximum ozone mixing ratios reach 20 parts per billion on a volume basis (ppbv) but about 6 ppbv prevail over the forest. Maximum ozone deposition velocities for pastures can reach 0.7 cm s-1, which is about threefold lower than values derived for forests. Combining ozone abundance and deposition velocities, pasture maximum ozone fluxes reach approximately 0.2 microgram (ozone) m-2 s-1. This flux represents approximately 70% of the deposition rates measured over the forest. Hence, this study suggests that conversion of rainforests to pastures could lead to a net reduction (30%) in the ozone sink in the Amazon.

A new technical variant on the superficial temporal artery-middle cerebral artery anastomosis was performed in a patient with occlusions of both the left internal and external carotid arteries and persistent ischemic symptomatology. Instead of anastomosing the proximal segment of the superficial temporal artery to the middle cerebral artery as is conventionally done, the distal segment of the superficial temporal artery was anastomosed to a cortical branch of the left middle cerebral artery. Reconstituted flow of the left superficial temporal artery via right superficial temporal artery collateral branches proved adequate to relieve the patient's ischemic episodes. "Reverse" superficial temporal artery-middle cerebral artery anastomosis should be considered in those cases where occlusive disease of the external carotid circulation renders conventional bypass procedures ineffective in the treatment of ischemic symptomatology.
