Abstract

Le regard que l’on porte habituellement sur la population musulmane de notre pays est en grande partie déterminé par les conditions historiques et les caractéristiques sociologiques de celle-ci. Or les origines de cette population, enfant non assumée de la colonisation et fille d’une immigration encore largement cantonnée aux banlieues, remontent au moins à la fin du 19e siècle. Le cycle de conférences publiques que propose l’IISMM entend restituer la diversité de ces islams de France et éclairer les enjeux et les non-dits des débats que suscite cette présence musulmane dans l’un des pays promoteurs de la laïcité.

Abstract

The future of an academic field is dependent on its attractiveness for scholars of the next generation, and its ability to stay relevant to society. This paper therefore discusses the current situation for emerging scholars in the field of medieval studies in Germany. It outlines the general context for young academics in Germany, and begins the discussion about which aspects within the system should be open to debate, in order to strengthen the position for the new generation. The authors also raise the issue of parenthood and academic careers, which – as women in particular are still disadvantaged – needs to be adjusted in view of changing concepts of shared responsibilities in childcare. In the second part, the authors turn to the role medieval studies can and should play in emerging fields like Digital Humanities, and the thematic and methodological variety they have to offer for the wider public, and especially for schools. The paper calls on the young generation especially to involve themselves using new formats, in order to make the discipline attractive for even younger people. The opportunities for international exchange and interdisciplinary approaches have perhaps never been as promising as today. The paper closes by making a number of concrete proposals to the Mediävistenverband, in order to intensify its support of young scholars in their academic careers and thereafter., Das Mittelalter. Abstract

The twenty-first century has been marked strongly with two extremely significant developments, firstly the increase in international terror attacks and secondly the evolution of media and information consumption based on technological advancements. These phenomena together have led to the figurative and literal blowing up of mass media coverage, but, increasingly and more importantly, social media traffic. This shift in information consumption by the general public, especially after terror attacks, is leading to a fragmentation of authority that traditional media gained after years of being the monopoly of verified information exchange. The increased usage and wide accessibility of social media is allowing more people to feel connected globally after terror attacks and is leading to the creation of mediascapes by defining in-groups of like-minded people against Islam, as a common enemy, which leads to a drastic increase in online hate against Islam and Muslims. Digital mediascapes therefore have the ability to unify participants around an “us” that is specifically against the “other” that is labeled as an enemy. Islamophobia thus has become a useful tool for right-wing populists not only to gather a large following online but for right-wing parties to assemble electors in several European nation-states. This, in turn, can provoke the escalation of right-wing populism where people, who are experiencing the echo chamber first hand or those perceiving the viral developments from outside, can become easy prey for political influence. Therefore, social media groups, hashtags and sites can be seen as the feeding ground for right-wing populist political parties., This paper is part of a project that has received funding from the European Union's horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Sklodowska-Curie grant agreement n. 813547

Abstract

International audience; The volume brings together innovative contributions on the history and nature of families in the early modern Middle East, coverning Central Asia, Iran, Ottoman Turkey and the Arab World from the fifteenth to the seventeenth century and beyond. It argues the importance of connecting the key concept of family in its widest possible meaning, whether descent group, lineage, household or dynasty, with the notion of transmission of knowledge, authority, status and power, and develops this idea through a pluridisciplinary and cross-regional approach. Based on primary sources in Arabic, Persian, and Turkish as well as art and material culture, the individual articles detail processes and dynamics of transmission, thus initiating a comparative dialogue.

Die Geschichte der großen Reiche im östlichen Europa und im Vorderen Orient war sowohl von konfliktträchtiger Konkurrenz als auch von übergreifendem Austausch geprägt, die intensive Verzahnungen hervorbrachten. Vom 16. bis zum Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts lassen sich zwischen Polen-Litauen, dem Zarenreich, dem Osmanischen Reich und Persien eine Vielzahl gesellschaftlicher und kultureller Verflechtungen nachzeichnen. Getragen von verschiedenen Gruppen und Individuen wie Kaufleuten, Gelehrten, Diplomaten, Migranten, Militärs oder Sklaven kam es zu einem regen Austausch von Menschen, Waren und Ideen. Daraus erwuchsen zu verschiedenen Zeiten und in verschiedenen sozialen Räumen »transosmanische« Interaktionszusammenhänge. Der vorliegende Band gibt neben knappen methodischen Skizzen einen Forschungsüberblick über solche transregionalen Verflechtungen und »Flüsse«, die bisher noch nicht in systematischer Form untersucht worden sind.
