Large Language Models (LLMs) have attracted significant attention due to their human-like language understanding and generation capabilities, as well as their applicability across various domains. These models, characterized by their massive scale and extensive training data, continue to push the boundaries of what is possible in natural language processing. The Llama 3 series, for instance, exemplifies this trend with its flagship model boasting 405 billion parameters trained on 15.6 trillion tokens. The immense computational demands associated with training such models have spurred ongoing research into optimizing the efficiency of the training process, particularly through the use of lower-precision formats. NVIDIA's H100 GPU, which introduces support for FP8 in addition to the more conventional FP16 and BF16 formats, has emerged as a focal point in this optimization effort. Preliminary studies suggest that FP8 could offer substantial reductions in training time without sacrificing model performance when compared to BF16, making it a promising candidate for large-scale model training. However, the broader implications of adopting FP8, particularly in terms of training stability and downstream task performance, have yet to be fully understood. In large language model (LLM) training, several parallelization strategies, including Tensor Parallelism (TP), Pipeline Parallelism (PP), Data Parallelism (DP), as well as Sequence Parallelism (SP) and Context Parallelism (CP), are employed to distribute model parameters, activations, and optimizer states across devices. Identifying the optimal parallelization configuration for each environment while avoiding GPU memory overflow remains a challenging task. In this study, we provide precise formulas to estimate the memory consumed by parameters, gradients, optimizer states, and activations for 4D parallel training (DP, TP, PP, CP) in the Llama architecture. We conducted 454 experiments on A100 and H100 GPUs, incorporating often neglected factors such as temporary buffers and memory fragmentation into our analysis. Results indicate that when the estimated memory usage is below 80\% of the available GPU memory, the training never encounters out-of-memory errors. This simple yet effective formula allows us to identify parallelization configurations that could lead to memory overflow in advance, significantly reducing the configuration search space. Additionally, through a comprehensive exploration of optimal configurations in 4D parallelism, our analysis of the 454 experimental results provides empirical insights into optimal 4D parallelism configurations.

This paper introduces LLM-jp, a cross-organizational project for the research and development of Japanese large language models (LLMs). LLM-jp aims to develop open-source and strong Japanese LLMs, and as of this writing, more than 1,500 participants from academia and industry are working together for this purpose. This paper presents the background of the establishment of LLM-jp, summaries of its activities, and technical reports on the LLMs developed by LLM-jp. Cross-lingual continual pre-training of large language models (LLMs) initially trained on English corpus allows us to leverage the vast amount of English language resources and reduce the pre-training cost. In this study, we constructed Swallow, an LLM with enhanced Japanese capability, by extending the vocabulary of Llama 2 to include Japanese characters and conducting continual pre-training on a large Japanese web corpus. Experimental results confirmed that the performance on Japanese tasks drastically improved through continual pre-training, and the performance monotonically increased with the amount of training data up to 100B tokens. Consequently, Swallow achieved superior performance compared to other LLMs that were trained from scratch in English and Japanese. An analysis of the effects of continual pre-training revealed that it was particularly effective for Japanese question answering tasks. Furthermore, to elucidate effective methodologies for cross-lingual continual pre-training from English to Japanese, we investigated the impact of vocabulary expansion and the effectiveness of incorporating parallel corpora. The results showed that the efficiency gained through vocabulary expansion had no negative impact on performance, except for the summarization task, and that the combined use of parallel corpora enhanced translation ability.

Open Japanese large language models (LLMs) have been trained on the Japanese portions of corpora such as CC-100, mC4, and OSCAR. However, these corpora were not created for the quality of Japanese texts. This study builds a large Japanese web corpus by extracting and refining text from the Common Crawl archive (21 snapshots of approximately 63.4 billion pages crawled between 2020 and 2023). This corpus consists of approximately 312.1 billion characters (approximately 173 million pages), which is the largest of all available training corpora for Japanese LLMs, surpassing CC-100 (approximately 25.8 billion characters), mC4 (approximately 239.7 billion characters) and OSCAR 23.10 (approximately 74 billion characters). To confirm the quality of the corpus, we performed continual pre-training on Llama 2 7B, 13B, 70B, Mistral 7B v0.1, and Mixtral 8x7B Instruct as base LLMs and gained consistent (6.6-8.1 points) improvements on Japanese benchmark datasets. Vision Language Models (VLMs) have undergone a rapid evolution, giving rise to significant advancements in the realm of multimodal understanding tasks. However, the majority of these models are trained and evaluated on English-centric datasets, leaving a gap in the development and evaluation of VLMs for other languages, such as Japanese. This gap can be attributed to the lack of methodologies for constructing VLMs and the absence of benchmarks to accurately measure their performance. To address this issue, we introduce a novel benchmark, Japanese Heron-Bench, for evaluating Japanese capabilities of VLMs. The Japanese Heron-Bench consists of a variety of imagequestion answer pairs tailored to the Japanese context. Additionally, we present a baseline Japanese VLM that has been trained with Japanese visual instruction tuning datasets. Our Heron-Bench reveals the strengths and limitations of the proposed VLM across various ability dimensions. Furthermore, we clarify the capability gap between strong closed models like GPT-4V and the baseline model, providing valuable insights for future research in this domain. We release the benchmark dataset and training code to facilitate further developments in Japanese VLM research.

We propose a method for synthesizing environmental sounds from visually represented onomatopoeias and sound sources. An onomatopoeia is a word that imitates a sound structure, i.e., the text representation of sound. From this perspective, onoma-to-wave has been proposed to synthesize environmental sounds from the desired onomatopoeia texts. Onomatopoeias have another representation: visual-text representations of sounds in comics, advertisements, and virtual reality. A visual onomatopoeia (visual text of onomatopoeia) contains rich information that is not present in the text, such as a long-short duration of the image, so the use of this representation is expected to synthesize diverse sounds. Therefore, we propose visual onoma-to-wave for environmental sound synthesis from visual onomatopoeia. The method can transfer visual concepts of the visual text and sound-source image to the synthesized sound. We also propose a data augmentation method focusing on the repetition of onomatopoeias to enhance the performance of our method. We propose a conditional generative adversarial network (GAN) incorporating humans' perceptual evaluations. A deep neural network (DNN)-based generator of a GAN can represent a real-data distribution accurately but can never represent a human-acceptable distribution, which are ranges of data in which humans accept the naturalness regardless of whether the data are real or not. A HumanGAN was proposed to model the human-acceptable distribution. A DNN-based generator is trained using a human-based discriminator, i.e., humans' perceptual evaluations, instead of the GAN's DNN-based discriminator. However, the HumanGAN cannot represent conditional distributions. This paper proposes the HumanACGAN, a theoretical extension of the HumanGAN, to deal with conditional human-acceptable distributions. Our HumanACGAN trains a DNN-based conditional generator by regarding humans as not only a discriminator but also an auxiliary classifier. The generator is trained by deceiving the human-based discriminator that scores the unconditioned naturalness and the human-based classifier that scores the class-conditioned perceptual acceptability. The training can be executed using the backpropagation algorithm involving humans' perceptual evaluations. We propose the HumanGAN, a generative adversarial network (GAN) incorporating human perception as a discriminator. A basic GAN trains a generator to represent a real-data distribution by fooling the discriminator that distinguishes real and generated data. Therefore, the basic GAN cannot represent the outside of a real-data distribution. In the case of speech perception, humans can recognize not only human voices but also processed (i.e., a non-existent human) voices as human voice. Such a human-acceptable distribution is typically wider than a real-data one and cannot be modeled by the basic GAN. To model the human-acceptable distribution, we formulate a backpropagation-based generator training algorithm by regarding human perception as a black-boxed discriminator. The training efficiently iterates generator training by using a computer and discrimination by crowdsourcing. We evaluate our HumanGAN in speech naturalness modeling and demonstrate that it can represent a human-acceptable distribution that is wider than a real-data distribution., Comment: Submitted to IEEE ICASSP 2020

We investigated the electronic structure of monolayer VTe2 grown on bilayer graphene by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). We found that monolayer VTe2 takes the octahedral 1T structure in contrast to the monoclinic one in the bulk, as evidenced by the good agreement in the Fermi-surface topology between ARPES results and first-principles band calculations for octahedral monolayer 1T-VTe2. We have revealed that monolayer 1T-VTe2 at low temperature is characterized by a metallic state whereas the nesting condition is better than that of isostructural monolayer VSe2 which undergoes a CDW transition to insulator at low temperature. The present result suggests an importance of Fermi-surface topology for characterizing the CDW properties of monolayer TMDs.
