27. Future trends of excess mercury in Asia in response to Minamata Convention on Mercury

Abstract

Owing to rapid industrialization, Asia has become the main source of mercury emissions and a significant net importer of mercury. Therefore, the situation regarding excess mercury in Asia needs to be better understood. In this study, mercury flows and excess mercury in 2010–2050 in Asian regions, with a particular focus on China, are assessed under updated assumptions. The excess mercury in China in 2030 and 2050 is estimated to be 125 and 284 tons, respectively. The cumulative excess mercury in China will reach around 10,000 tons in 2050 under the assumption of no export of it in the years 2010–2050. In addition, the year in which mercury reaches a surplus in Asia (excl. China) is estimated to be 2039. The mercury supply in Asia strongly depends on the usage of excess mercury in China. It is estimated that mercury supplies will be insufficient in Asia until at least 2017. These predictions should support decision-making and planning for long-term storage capacity, discussions of regional coordination, securing of technical support, and development of the basic design of related facilities.

Abstract

In human health risk assessment (HHRA), oral ingestion of soil can be a major route of exposure to many immobile soil contaminants. Development and validation of in vitro assays is currently being undertaken to avoid overestimation of pollutants absorbed by the human body when calculating total pollutant concentrations in HHRA. In this study, arsenic (As) and lead (Pb) bioaccessibility in polluted Australian soils (n = 6) was assessed using three in vitro assays: a physiologically based extraction test (PBET), Solubility/Bioavailability Research Consortium Assay (SBRC) and Unified Bioaccessibility Research Group Of Europe Method (UBM). In vitro results were compared among these three assays and the possible causes of their differences were discussed. A bioaccessibility-corrected HHRA was then conducted. Bioaccessibility varied greatly among metal(loid)s and methods, and extending the three assays from the gastric to the intestinal phase generally resulted in decreased As and Pb bioaccessibility. Using these bioaccessibility values, both hazard index (HI) and carcinogenic risk (CR) were calculated, and were found to be higher than threshold values in most samples, indicating a potential health risk to local inhabitants.

Abstract

Since organically bound chlorine (organo-Cl) has been determined by different methods depending on samples and study fields, it has been difficult to compare organo-Cl in different environments. Here, we focused on Cl in water-insoluble fractions (insoluble Cl) and applied Cl K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy in conjunction with combustion ion chromatography. Quantitative speciation of insoluble Cl enabled us to compare the concentrations of Cl bonded with aromatic carbon (aromatic-Cl) and aliphatic carbon (aliphatic-Cl) as well as organo-Cl across different types of environmental solid samples (soils, particulate matter, dust, and ashes). The concentrations of organo-Cl in house dust and urban particulate matter exceeded those in forest soils, suggesting that house dust and urban particulate matter may be important pools of organochlorine compounds (OCs). Further, by studying representative samples with concentrations of some individual organochlorine compounds (OCs), we evaluated the mass balance of identified/unidentified organo-Cl. The percentages of identified Cl to organo-Cl were up to 1% in all samples evaluated, suggesting the ubiquitous presence of unidentified OCs. We also estimated the chemical forms of insoluble inorganic Cl and tested the plots of organo-Cl versus total organic carbon to find the difference between samples. This work shows that the quantitative speciation of insoluble Cl is effective for cross-comparison of organo-Cl in different environmental solid samples.
