On January 28, 1990, the Dynamic Explorer 1 (DE-1) and Akebono satellites crossed a magnetic field structure at the equatorward edge of the polar cusp at altitudes od 22,000 and 5000 km, respectively, within 6 min of each other. Locally measured plasma particles and fields and magnetometer data from a ground station near the foot of the magnetic field line are more consistent with an interpretation of the structure as that of a standing Alfven wave than that of a quasi-steady field-aligned current sheet. We discuss the observations supporting this conclusion and other related observations of field-aligned currents, Alfven waves, and ion energization near the equatorward edge of the cusp. These observations suggest that Alfven waves are commonly present near the equatorward edge of the cusp.

The mesospheric sodium layer has been observed at Syowa Station in Antarctica during the wintering period of the 26th Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition. A lidar observation of the polar middle atmosphere at the station has been performed as a part of the Middle Atmosphere Program since 1983. At first stratospheric aerosols have been observed by the system based on a ruby laser. In 1985 a new transmitting system consisting of a tunable dye laser was added to that system to observe the sodium layer, too. The characteristics of the lidar system are given. The results of the mesospheric sodium layer observed on 42 nights during the period from March to October, 1985 are also given.

Lidar measurement on Antarctic aerosols were made during the Antarctic Middle Atmosphere (AMA) period, 1983 to 1985, at Syowa Station. Topics measured are winter enhancement aerosol layer and volcanic effect of El Chichon on the Antarctic stratosphere aerosols. The large depolarization ratio (maximum value was about 0.8) seems to support sublimation growth of ice crystals. The lidar measurements showed a meaningful time lag between aerosol content increase and depolarization ratio increase. Considering the balloon observations made in early winter, it was speculated that an increase in large particle number concentration also contributed to the winter enhancement. The El Chichon cloud spread to the Antarctic region by the beginning of 1983. The temporal change of integrated backscatter coefficient shows a clear decay pattern, although strong winter enhancement superposes.

The polar stratosphere has been speculated to be an active sink region of various stratospheric materials; ozone, water vapor, NOX, aerosol particles and so on, but this process is not theoretically and/or observationally made clear. The observation of the polar stratospheric aerosol layer using laser radar certainly contributes to the study of the global transport of these stratospheric minor constituents. In addition to this, from the viewpoint of aerosol science, there may be many interesting phenomena which cannot be found in the stratosphere at mid and low latitudes; the effect of precipitation of high energy molecules and atoms, of very cold winter stratosphere, of very cold mesopause in summer. Laser radar observation is one of the main activities of the Antarctic Middle Atmosphere (AMA) project at Syowa Station (69.00 deg S, 39.35 deg E), Antarctica since May 1983. Laser radar measurement at Syowa Station is discussed in detail.

The relationships among Pc 3, Pc 4, and Pc 5 activities observed at ground stations near L = 6 are clarified by comparing their dynamic spectral structures. It is found that there are two predominant spectral bands throughout the daytime with frequencies of about 20-80 mHz and about 3-10 mHz. At synchronous orbit, corresponding spectral bands are seen in the frequency-time spectra of the azimuthal component which generally show a clear harmonic structure when the satellite is located at the off-magnetic equator. The result strongly suggests that the 20-80 mHz band is the higher harmonics of standing shear Alfven waves and the 3-10 mHz band is the fundamental mode. Switching of activity between both bands is frequently observed on magnetically quiet days, indicating that the Pc 3 and Pc 4/5 bands are excited by different external driving sources.
