Abstract

Inequalities between men and women are common and well-documented. Objective indexes show that men are better positioned than women in societal hierarchies—there is no single country in the world without a gender gap. In contrast, researchers have found that the women-are-wonderful effect—that women are evaluated more positively than men overall—is also common. Cross-cultural studies on gender equality reveal that the more gender egalitarian the society is, the less prevalent explicit gender stereotypes are. Yet, because self-reported gender stereotypes may differ from implicit attitudes towards each gender, we reanalysed data collected across 44 cultures, and (a) confirmed that societal gender egalitarianism reduces the women-are-wonderful effect when it is measured more implicitly (i.e. rating the personality of men and women presented in images) and (b) documented that the social perception of men benefits more from gender egalitarianism than that of women. info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersion

Abstract

Na,K-ATPase represents the key enzyme maintaining the ionic gradient across plasma membrane. It was documented that in directly irradiated organs the activity of this enzyme is decreased. The aim of present study was to clarify the remote effect of irradiation in mediastinal area on the activity of the Na,K-ATPase in selected brain regions in rats. Ionizing radiation in single dose 25 Gy induced alterations in oxidative status of blood plasma. Irradiation also decreased the activity of the Na,K-ATPase in cerebral cortex. Measurements of kinetic properties of the enzyme dependently on the concentration of energy substrate ATP or cofactor Na+ indicated that the lowered enzyme activity is probably a consequence of decreased number of active molecules of the enzyme, as suggested by lowered Vmax values (by 13 - 14%). Immunoblot analysis revealed that this effect is connected namely to decreased presence of a2 and a3 subunits (by 25% and 30% respectively). Considering the current concepts about involvement of the malfunction of a2 a3 subunits in development of primary brain dysfunctions, it may be hypothesized that the lowered functionality of those subunits of Na,K-ATPase may represent a predisposition to neurodegenerative disorders after irradiation. Abstract

The medical staff performing interventional cardiology and radiology (IC/IR) procedures stand close to the patient and thus close to the primary radiation beam. Although they wear a lead apron and thyroid collar, their hands, legs and eyes are not protected. Therefore, these parts could receive significantly high doses. Moreover, thedose ranges for the same kind of procedures vary a lot, as many factors affect extremity and eye lens doses. Additionally, there is evidence that eye lens doses can be high in IR/IC, and cases of cataract have been reported in recent years. A lack of an appropriate eye lens dosemeter as well as an appropriate calibration procedure has been identified. Medical staff in IR/IC could benefit from the use of active personal dosemeters (APDs) as optimisation tool. However, a lack of appropriate APDs is identified for typical fields in IR and IC. Very few devices can detect low energy fields, and none of them are really designed for working in pulsed radiation fields. In the field of nuclear medicine (NM) the extremity doses to the technologists are also known to be very high. One can highlight the difficulties in estimating the dose distribution across the hands, and the need for greater knowledge of doses received during the main tasks of a nuclear medicine department, especially using unsealed sources. The ORAMED project, (www.oramed-fp7.eu) was set up to optimize the working procedures in these medical fields with respect to radiation protection. ORAMED wasstructured in 5 work packages: - Extremity and eye lens dosimetry in IR and IC - Development of practical eye lens dosimetry - Optimization of the use of APDs in IR and IC - Extremity dosimetry in NM - Training and dissemination A coordinated measurement program in European hospitals was organised both in IR/IC and NM departments. Moreover, simulations of the most representative workplaces/procedures were performed to determine the main parameters that influence the extremity and eye lens doses. Some dedicated studies on improving the eye lens dosimetry and active personal dosimetry were conducted. Based on the measurement and simulation results, a series of practical guidelines and training packages were developed. The influence of the different radiation protection measures (like shields)in IR/IChave been quantified, and clear monitoring requirements have been formulated for a series of medical procedures. A formalism for the use of the operational quantity for eye lens dose measurements have been worked out (calibration phantom, conversion coefficients, type test procedures, ...). A dedicated eye lens dosemeter has been developed that can be used in routine monitoring. The different existing APDs have been tested in fields that are representative for hospital fields (like pulsed fields), and a series of guidelines for the use of these APDs in hospitals have been made. Also, an improved APD device specifically for IR/IC fields has been developed.The extensive measurement and simulation campaign for extremity doses in NM lead to a systematic evaluation of the different radiation protection measures. These are condensed in a series of practical guidelines to be used. The dose distribution across the hands of the technologists was characterised, and recommendations for routine monitoring have been formulated. The outcome of the ORAMED project will improve the radiation protection standards for medical staff. The systematic measurements and simulations are the new standards that will be used for many years to come. The practical guidelines that have been developed can be used in the hospitals by the medical staff. In particular, the developments on the eye-lens dosimetry and the active personal dosemeters will result in an improvement of the practical measurement capabilities in the field.

Abstract

Leung and colleagues have revealed a five-dimensional structure of social axioms across individuals from five cultural groups. The present research was designed to reveal the culture level factor structure of social axioms and its correlates across 41 nations. An ecological factor analysis on the 60 items of the Social Axioms Survey extracted two factors: Dynamic Externality correlates with value measures tapping collectivism, hierarchy, and conservatism and with national indices indicative of lower social development. Societal Cynicism is less strongly and broadly correlated with previous values measures or other national indices and seems to define a novel cultural syndrome. Its national correlates suggest that it taps the cognitive component of a cultural constellation labeled maleficence, a cultural syndrome associated with a general mistrust of social systems and other people. Discussion focused on the meaning of these national level factors of beliefs and on their relationships with individual level factors of belief derived from the same data set.

Abstract

For 30 years we have followed the case of a euthyroid patient who had a goiter diagnosed at age 15. It was originally diffuse and did not shrink during treatment, first with desiccated thyroid extract and then with triiodothyronine. After treatment was stopped, the goiter gradually became nodular and calcified when the patient was in her late teens or early 20s; it then shrank. She remains clinically and chemically euthyroid, with a calcified, multinodular goiter and persistent elevation of the serum PBI concentration which, early in the course of the disease was shown to include a substantial fraction of butanol-insoluble iodine. In a euthyroid patient, the association of an elevated serum PBI concentration (with an abnormally large butanol-insoluble iodine fraction) with a diffuse goiter that became nodular and calcified may be unique.

Corporate governance is a topic of great interest in the current economic climate being widely debated in scientific economic papers and can be defined as the system by which companies are directed and controlled, but also can be seen as the relationships between companies and their stakeholders. In correlation to firm performance, corporate governance assures the framework in defining the firm objectives and the means by which these can be achieved, also assuring the monitoring of obtained results. The issue raised by both practitioners and academicians is whether corporate governance can really enhance performance, this being more highlighted in the current development of economy. It is widely believed that the existence of an effective system of corporate governance in terms of helping to build a high degree of confidence and trust is absolutely necessary for proper functioning of a market economy and that good corporate governance is a factor in improving firm value and performance for both developed and developing economies. Abstract

The Work Package 4 of the ORAMED project, a collaborative project (2008–11) supported by the European Commission within its seventh Framework Programme, is concerned with the optimisation of the extremity dosimetry of medical staff in nuclear medicine. To evaluate the extremity doses and dose distributions across the hands of medical staff working in nuclear medicine departments, an extensive measurement programme has been started in 32 nuclear medicine departments in Europe. This was done using a standard protocol recording all relevant information for radiation exposure, i.e. radiation protection devices and tools. This study shows the preliminary results obtained for this measurement campaign. For diagnostic purposes, the two most-used radionuclides were considered: 99mTc and 18F. For therapeutic treatments, Zevalin® and DOTATOC (both labelled with 90Y) were chosen. Large variations of doses were observed across the hands depending on different parameters. Furthermore, this study highlights the importance of the positioning of the extremity dosemeter for a correct estimate of the maximum skin doses. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Abstract

The efficacy of doxycycline and ciprofloxacin against an experimental tularaemia infection was assessed by comparing the median lethal dose (MLD) of Francisella tularensis Schu4 biotype A strain given intraperitoneally to antibiotic-treated and untreated mice. In untreated Porton outbred mice this was <1 cfu. Ciprofloxacin and doxycycline given at 40 mg/kg bd, initiated 48 h before infection and continued for 5 days after infection, afforded protection against intraperitoneal challenges of 3.7 x 10(6) cfu and 6.0 x 10(6) cfu, respectively. Protection was reduced when both antibiotics were given over a similar period at a lower dose regimen (20 mg/kg bd) to 8.8 x 10(5) cfu and 3.5 x 10(2) cfu, respectively. The greater reduction in protection offered by doxycycline was a reflection of the higher in-vitro MIC. Protection also decreased when the antibiotics were initiated 24 h after challenge. The MLD was 3.2 x 10(5) cfu and 1.6 x 10(6) cfu for ciprofloxacin and doxycycline respectively given at 40 mg/kg bd and was reduced further using the lower dose regimen. Overall, 90% of the deaths occurred following the withdrawal of antibiotic, irrespective of the antibiotic dose or type. It was possible to prevent this relapse by extending the antibiotic administration to 10 days after challenge. Ciprofloxacin and doxycycline may be useful for treating tularaemia, although the possibility of relapse should be considered. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

1. The ventilatory response to severe metabolic acidosis was studied by measuring arterial blood carbon dioxide tension and pH in sixty-seven patients with blood pH < 7·10, none of whom had hypercapnia, pulmonary oedema, or chronic pulmonary insufficiency. The results were compared with those previously found in patients with uncomplicated diabetic ketoacidosis. 2. By that comparison, fifty-two of the sixty-seven patients with blood pH < 7·10 were judged to have ‘appropriate hypocapnia’, and fifteen had ‘submaximal hypocapnia’. Thirteen of the latter fifteen had circulatory failure and/or acute hypoxia, and seven of nine in whom it was measured had plasma lactate >9 mmol/l. 3. Hyperventilation was therefore usually well sustained in these patients with severe metabolic acidosis, except in most of those with acute tissue hypoxia. The latter may have had insufficient time to achieve maximum hyperventilation in response to their acidosis, or perhaps their submaximal hypercapnia presaged imminent failure of the hyperventilatory response.

Abstract

1. Previous studies of the ventilatory response to metabolic acidosis have usually considered only patients with arterial blood pH above 7·10. To define the response during more severe acidaemia, arterial CO2 tension and pH were measured in fifty-three episodes of diabetic ketoacidosis, including twenty-four with pH below 7·10, and ten with pH below 7·00. 2. The relation between arterial CO2 tension, and both blood pH and plasma bicarbonate concentration, in these cases with generally severe metabolic acidaemia (mean pH 7·12 ± SD 0·13), was very similar to the relations between those variables found by others in patients with less severe acidaemia, such as that due to renal failure. 3. As arterial blood hydrogen ion activity increased, arterial CO2 tension decreased inversely, reflecting well-sustained hyperventilation, even during profound acidaemia. 4. The inverse relation between arterial CO2 tension and hydrogen ion activity suggests that during metabolic acidosis, alveolar ventilation increases in direct proportion to the increased blood hydrogen ion activity.

Abstract

1. The relation between the urinary excretion of inorganic phosphate and sodium was studied in anaesthetized dogs subjected to acute unilateral increases of ureteral back-pressure while receiving infusions of iso-osmotic sodium chloride. Under these circumstances modest increases of ureteral back-pressure, +14 to +23 cmH2O, were associated with relatively small changes of glomerular filtration rate from control values (-12.7 to +8.2%). 2. Increased ureteral back-pressure caused closely proportionate decreases of urinary phosphate and sodium excretion regardless of whether glomerular filtration rate increased, decreased or remained unchanged. When glomerular filtration rate increased or remained stable, the decreases of phosphate and sodium excretion were attributable to closely proportionate increases of tubular reabsorption of sodium and of phosphate. The increased tubular reabsorption of phosphate may be causally related to the increased tubular reabsorption of sodium.
