Abstract Background According to the studies, more than 80% of pediatric patients with cancer can achieve a survival rate greater than 5 years; however, long‐term chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy may seriously affect their reproductive ability. Fertility preservation in adolescents with cancer in China was initiated late, and related research is lacking. Analyze data to understand the current situation and implement measures to improve current practices. Methods From 2011 to 2020, data on 275 male adolescents with cancer whose age ranged from 0 to 19 years old were collected from 16 human sperm banks for this retrospective study. Methods include comparing the basic situation of male adolescents with cancer, the distribution of cancer types, and semen quality to analyze the status of fertility preservation. Results The mean age was 17.39 ± 1.46 years, with 13 cases (4.7%) aged 13–14 years and 262 cases (95.3%) aged 15–19 years. Basic diagnoses included leukemia (55 patients), lymphomas (76), germ cell and gonadal tumors (65), epithelial tumors (37), soft tissue sarcomas (14), osteosarcoma (7), brain tumors (5), and other cancers (16). Previous reports have revealed that the abnormal expression of the cell division cycle-associated gene family (CDCAs) is closely associated with some human cancers. However, the precise functional roles and mechanisms of CDCAs in kidney renal papillary cell carcinoma (KIRP) remain unclear. In this study, RNA sequencing data from the Cancer Genome Atlas database and Genotype-Tissue Expression databases were utilized to perform the expression, correlation, survival, mutation, functional enrichment analysis, and immunoinfiltration analyses of CDCAs in KIRP. We found that the expression levels of CDCA genes were significantly increased in KIRP across multiple databases, as confirmed by immunohistochemistry and quantitative reverse transcription PCR (RT-qPCR). Moreover, increased expression of CDCA genes is significantly associated with poor prognosis. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses demonstrated that pathologic T and N staging, NUF2, CDCA2, CDCA3, CDCA5, CBX2, CDCA7, and CDCA8 were independent prognostic factors for patients with KIRP. Utilizing these nine variables, we developed a nomogram prognostic model. Furthermore, the results of GO and KEGG functional enrichment analyses suggested that CDCA genes were associated with nuclear division, mitotic nuclear division, and chromosome segregation and were involved in the cell cycle, p53 signaling pathway, and cellular senescence. We found that the expression of NUF2, CDCA2, CDCA5, and CBX2 was closely associated with the expression of lymphocytes, immunostimulatory molecules, immunoinhibitory molecules, and chemokines. In summary, NUF2, CDCA2, CDCA3, CDCA5, CBX2, CDCA7, and CDCA8 are potential biomarkers for KIRP diagnosis and prognosis.

The progressive decline of the coal industry necessitates the development of effective treatment solutions for acid mine drainage (AMD), which is characterized by high acidity and elevated concentrations of heavy metals. This study proposes an innovative approach leveraging sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) acclimated to contaminated anaerobic environments. The research focused on elucidating the physiological characteristics and optimal growth conditions of SRB, particularly in relation to the pH level and temperature. The experimental findings reveal that the SRB exhibited a sulfate removal rate of 88.86% at an optimal temperature of 30 °C. Additionally, SRB gel particles were formulated using sodium alginate (SA) and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), and their performance was assessed under specific conditions (pH = 6, C/S = 1.5, T = 30 °C, CMC = 4.5%, BSNa = 0.4 mol/L, and cross-linking time = 9 h). Under these conditions, the SRB gel particles demonstrated an enhanced sulfate removal efficiency of 91.6%. Thermal analysis via differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) provided further insights into the stability and properties of the SRB gel spheres. The findings underscore the potential of SRB-based bioremediation as a sustainable and efficient method for AMD treatment, offering a novel and environmentally friendly solution to mitigating the adverse effects of environmental contamination.

Backgrounds: Global fertility rates continue to decline and sperm quality is a prime factor affecting male fertility. Both extreme cold and heat have been demonstrated to be associated with decreased sperm quality, but no epidemiological studies have considered human adaptation to long-term temperature. Our aim was to conduct a multi-center retrospective cohort study to investigate exposure-response relationship between temperature anomaly (TA) that deviate from long-term climate patterns and sperm quality. Methods: A total of 78,952 semen samples measured in 33,234 donors from 6 provincial human sperm banks in China were collected. This study considered heat and cold acclimatization to prolonged exposure in humans and explored the exposure-response relationship between TAs and sperm quality parameters (sperm concentrations, sperm count, progressive motility, progressive sperm count, total motility and total motile sperm count) during the hot and cold seasons, respectively. Linear mixed models and generalized linear models were built separately for specific centers to pool in a meta-analysis to obtain the pooled effect of TA on sperm quality, considering repeated measurements data structure and spatial heterogeneity. Results: We identified an inverted U-shaped exposure-response relationship between TA and sperm quality during the hot season. Significant negative effect of anomalous cold on sperm quality during the hot season was found after additional adjustment for Body mass index, marital status and childbearing history. Abstract Hydrophilic polymer coatings on artificial implants generate excellent tribological properties. The friction properties of polymer coatings are affected by salt ion factors. Herein, the atomic force microscopy (AFM) was used to show that the superlubricity was achieved between poly(vinylphosphonic acid) (PVPA)-modified Ti6Al4V and polystyrene (PS) microsphere probe lubricated with monovalent salt solutions (LiCl, NaCl, KCl, and CsCl). Considering that adhesion is an important cause of friction changes, the AFM was further utilized to obtain adhesion between friction pairs in different salt solutions. The results indicated that the larger the cation radius in the lubricant, the smaller the adhesion, and the lower the friction coefficient of the PVPA coating. The electrostatic interaction between the PVPA and one-valence cations in lubricants was analyzed by the molecular dynamics (MD) simulation as it was found to be the main influencing factor of the adhesion. Combined analysis results of friction and adhesion indicated that by adjusting the size of cation radius in lubricant, the adhesion between the tribo-pairs can be changed, and eventually the magnitude of friction can be affected. This study opens up a new avenue for analyzing the friction characteristics of hydrophilic polymer coatings from the perspective of intermolecular forces.

Résumé Contexte Des études antérieures ont rapporté que certains patients qui avaient des spermatozoïdes sans tête présentaient une mauvaise qualité du sperme, mais il n’y a eu aucune analyse systématique publiée sur la qualité du sperme chez les patients ayant des proportions différentes de spermatozoïdes sans tête dans leur sperme. Nous avons cherché à explorer l’association entre syndrome des spermatozoïdes acéphaliques et qualité du sperme chez les hommes ayant des proportions distinctes de spermatozoïdes sans tête. Les valeurs des paramètres du sperme chez les patients pour lesquels des spermatozoïdes sans tête ont été trouvés dans l’éjaculat ont été étudiées et comparées à celles de 413 patients consultant pour un examen prénatal, appariés sur l’âge. Tous les échantillons de sperme ont été analysés selon la même méthodologie dans un seul laboratoire. Résultats Toutes les valeurs des paramètres du sperme, à l’exception du volume de sperme, étaient négativement (P 20% (n = 71, groupe C). Dans le groupe A1, une seule valeur de paramètre de sperme (motilité progressive) est. inférieure à celle du groupe témoin, mais dans le groupe A2, le nombre s’élève à cinq (vitalité des spermatozoïdes, morphologie normale des spermatozoïdes, mobilité des spermatozoïdes, VCL (vitesse linéaire curviligne) et ALH (amplitude du déplacement latéral de la tête)). Coastal wetland soil organic carbon (CW-SOC) is crucial for wetland ecosystem conservation and carbon cycling. The accurate prediction of CW-SOC content is significant for soil carbon sequestration. This study, which employed three machine learning (ML) methods, including random forest (RF), gradient boosting machine (GBM), and extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), aimed to estimate CW-SOC content using 98 soil samples, SAR images, optical images, and climate and topographic data. Three statistical metrics and leave-one-out cross-validation were used to evaluate model performance. Optimal models using different ML methods were applied to predict the spatial distribution of CW-SOC content. The results showed the following: (1) The models built using optical images had higher predictive accuracy than models built using synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. The model that combined SAR images, optical images, and climate data demonstrated the highest prediction accuracy. Compared to the model using only optical images and SAR images, the prediction accuracy was improved by 0.063 and 0.115, respectively. (2) Regardless of the combination of predictive variables, the XGBoost method achieved higher prediction accuracy than the RF and GBM methods. (3) Optical images were the main explanatory variables for predicting CW-SOC content, explaining more than 65% of the variability. (4) The CW-SOC content predicted by the three ML methods showed similar spatial distribution characteristics. The central part of the study area had higher CW-SOC content, while the southern and northern regions had lower levels. This study accurately predicted the spatial distribution of CW-SOC content, providing data support for ecological environmental protection and carbon neutrality of coastal wetlands.

Résumé Contexte Lacryoconservation des spermatozoïdes, méthode efficace pour préserver lafertilité masculine, est très avantageuse pour les hommes atteints de cancer.Malheureusement, comme les médecins et les patients atteints de cancersignorent les possibilités de cryoconservation du sperme, les données surl’évaluation des paramètres spermatiques et le devenir des échantillonscryopréservés parmi les hommes chinois atteints de cancers sont rares. Résultats Lestumeurs masculines ont été classées en six types principaux, tumeurs germinales(26%), néoplasmes hématologiques (28%), cancers de la tête et du cou (19%),tumeurs thoraciques (4%), les tumeurs abdominales (10%), et les autres (13%).Les néoplasmes hématologiques étaient le cancer le plus répandu parmi notrecohorte de patients qui ont opté pour la mise en banque de leur sperme, suivisdes tumeurs à cellules germinales. Les patients atteints de tumeurs germinalesprésentaient les concentrations de spermatozoïdes pré-congélation etpost-décongélation les plus faibles. Nous avons comparé séparément les patientsatteints de tumeurs testiculaires, de lymphome, et de leucémie, et avonsconstaté que ceux atteins de leucémie présentaient les plus bassesconcentrations de spermatozoïdes pré-congélation. Une majorité de patientsatteints de cancer (58 %) ont choisi de conserver en banque leurs échantillonscongelés, tandis que 31 % ont choisi de jeter leurs échantillons congelés. Aufil des ans, seuls 13 patients (4%) sont revenus pour utiliser leurs spermatozoïdespar Assistance Médicale à la Procréation. Parmi les échantillons mis en banque,ceux des patients atteints de tumeurs germinales constituaient la proportion laplus élevée (29,3 %). Par ailleurs, les patients atteins de cancershématologiques constituaient le pourcentage le plus élevé (46.2%) de patientsqui n’avaient eu aucun spermatozoïde congelé. Conclusions Lesdonnées rapportées confirment l’impact délétère des divers cancers sur laqualité du sperme. Les leucémies étaientassociées à la pire qualité du sperme et au plus grand nombre d’échantillons desperme qui ne pouvaient pas être congelés. Nous pensons que la qualité desperme pourrait avoir diminué avant même le traitement antinéoplasique, et quela mise en banque de sperme avant le traitement devrait être fortementrecommandée pour les patients atteints de cancers. Un programme de mise enbanque du sperme avant traitement gonadotoxique nécessite une étroitecoopération entre les centres d’Assistance Médicale à la Procréation et les cliniquesde cancérologie.

Background: Propofol is widely used during anesthesia. However, propofol-induced injection pain (PIP) is considered an unpleasant perioperative outcome. This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of a mixture of esketamine and propofol in preventing propofol injection pain in patients undergoing general anesthesia.Methods: This was a prospective, double-blind, multicenter, and randomized controlled trial. We included 252 adult patients with the American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status I to II who underwent surgery under general anesthesia. Patients were randomly allocated in a 1:1:1:1 ratio to four groups (n = 63 per group). Group NS received a mixture of 1% propofol (20 ml) and 0.9% normal saline (1 ml), group ESK-4 received a mixture of 1% propofol (20 ml) and esketamine 4 mg (diluted with 0.9% normal saline, 1 ml), group ESK-12 received a mixture of 1% propofol (20 ml) and esketamine 12 mg (diluted with 0.9% normal saline, 1 ml), and group ESK-20 received a mixture of 1% propofol (20 ml) and esketamine 20 mg (diluted with 0.9% normal saline, 1 ml) as sedative drugs during anesthesia. The primary outcome was the incidence and distribution of different degrees of PIP. The secondary outcomes were vital signs, characteristics of surgery and anesthesia, and adverse events.Results: The incidence of PIP in group ESK-20 (33.3%) was significantly lower than that in groups NS, ESK-4, and ESK-12 (63.3%, 62.2%, and 49.1%, respectively; p < 0.01). The incidence of moderate PIP in group NS (33.3%) and group ESK-4 (22.6%) was higher than that in groups ESK-12 (7.5%) and ESK-20 (6.7%). The incidence of severe PIP in group NS (6.7%) and group ESK-4 (9.4%) was higher than that in groups ESK-12 (1.9%) and ESK-20 (0%). There were no differences in the vital signs, characteristics of surgery and anesthesia, or adverse events between the groups.Conclusion: Our results indicated that the esketamine–propofol admixture reduced the incidence of PIP in patients undergoing general anesthesia without severe side effects.

Soil total nitrogen (STN) is a crucial component of the ecosystem’s nitrogen pool, and accurate prediction of STN content is essential for understanding global nitrogen cycling processes. This study utilized the measured STN content of 126 sample points and 40 extracted remote sensing variables to predict the STN content and map its spatial distribution in the northeastern coastal region of Hebei Province, China, employing the random forest (RF), gradient boosting machine (GBM), and extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) methods. The purpose was to compare the ability of remote sensing images (Landsat-8, Sentinel-1, and Sentinel-2) with different machine learning methods for predicting STN content. The research results show the following: (1) The three machine learning methods accurately predicted the STN content and the optimal model provided by the XGBoost method, with an R2 of 0.627, RMSE of 0.127 g·kg−1, and MAE of 0.092 g·kg−1. (2) The combination of optical and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images improved prediction accuracy, with the R2 improving by 45.5%. (3) The importance of optical images is higher than that of SAR images in the RF, GBM, and XGBoost methods, with optical images accounting for 87%, 76%, and 77% importance, respectively. (4) The spatial distribution of STN content predicted by the three methods is similar. Higher STN contents are distributed in the northern part of the study area, while lower STN contents are distributed in coastal areas. The results of this study can be very useful for inventories of soil nitrogen and provide data support and method references for revealing nitrogen cycling.

Steroid 5α-reductase 2 (SRD5A2), a testosterone metabolism enzyme, is implicated in human disease. Structural and biochemical analyses of PbSRD5A, a bacterial homolog, reveal SRD5A2 substrate binding pocket and provide framework for the design of new drugs targeting this enzyme.

A constructed wetland (CW)-coupled microbial fuel cell (MFC) system was constructed to treat wastewater and generate electricity. The total phosphorus in the simulated domestic sewage was used as the treatment target, and the optimal phosphorus removal effect and electricity generation were determined by comparing the changes in substrates, hydraulic retention times, and microorganisms. The mechanism underlying phosphorus removal was also analyzed. By using magnesia and garnet as substrates, the best removal efficiencies of two CW-MFC systems reached 80.3% and 92.4%. Phosphorus removal by the garnet matrix mainly depends on a complex adsorption process, whereas the magnesia system relies on ion exchange reactions. The maximum output voltage and stabilization voltage of the garnet system were higher than those of the magnesia system. Microorganisms in the wetland sediments and electrode also changed considerably. It indicates that the mechanism of phosphorus removal by the substrate in the CW-MFC system is adsorption and chemical reaction between ions to generate precipitation. The population structure of proteobacteria and other microorganisms has an impact on both power generation and phosphorus removal. Combining the advantages of constructed wetlands and microbial fuel cells also improved phosphorus removal in coupled system. Therefore, when studying a CW-MFC system, the selection of electrode materials, matrix, and system structure should be taken into account to find a method that will improve the power generation capacity of the system and remove phosphorus.

Objectives: Sm proteins (SNRPB/D1/D2/D3/E/F/G), involved in pre-mRNA splicing, were previously reported in the tumorigenesis of several cancers. However, their specific role in lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) remains obscure. Our study aims to feature abnormal expressions and mutations of genes for Sm proteins and assess their potential as therapeutic targets via integrated bioinformatics analysis.Methods: In this research, we explored the expression pattern and prognostic worth of genes for Sm proteins in LUAD across TCGA, GEO, UALCAN, Oncomine, Metascape, David 6.8, and Kaplan-Meier Plotter, and confirmed its independent prognostic value via univariate and multivariate cox regression analysis. Meanwhile, their expression patterns were validated by RT-qPCR. Gene mutations and co-expression of genes for Sm proteins were analyzed by the cBioPortal database. The PPI network for Sm proteins in LUAD was visualized by the STRING and Cytoscape. The correlations between genes for Sm proteins and immune infiltration were analyzed by using the “GSVA” R package.Results: Sm proteins genes were found upregulated expression in both LUAD tissues and LUAD cell lines. Moreover, highly expressed mRNA levels for Sm proteins were strongly associated with short survival time in LUAD. Genes for Sm proteins were positively connected with the infiltration of Th2 cells, but negatively connected with the infiltration of mast cells, Th1 cells, and NK cells. Importantly, Cox regression analysis showed that high SNRPD1/E/F/G expression were independent risk factors for the overall survival of LUAD.Conclusion: Our study showed that SNRPD1/E/F/G could independently predict the prognostic outcome of LUAD and was correlated with immune infiltration. Also, this report laid the foundation for additional exploration on the potential treatment target’s role of SNRPD1/E/F/G in LUAD.

Abstract Background Most contemporary studies suggested that intersegmental parameters including disc height and local lordosis contribute to the sagittal balance of fused lumbar. Although similar clinical outcomes following MIS- and Open-TLIF were reported essentially at the early postoperative time, the comparison of local balance variables after these two different techniques was lack. The radiological differences maybe not relevant to the postoperative efficacy at an earlier post-operation stage. But during the long-term follow-up, the complications with regards to the sagittal imbalance might occur due to the distinct biomechanical properties of fusion level after MIS- and Open-TLIF. Methods The patients who underwent a single-level MIS- and Open-TLIF were reviewed retrospectively. The anterior disc height (ADH), posterior disc height (PDH), and segmental lordosis (SL) of the fusion segment were measured using recognition technical fluoroscopy. The mean disc height (MDH) was calculated by (ADH + PDH)/2. The relative DH was normalized by the anterior height of the upper vertebrae. The body mass index (BMI), the pain score of low back and leg visual analogue scale (VAS), Oswestry disability index (ODI), estimated blood loss, and hospital stay length was collected. Results A total of 88 patients undergoing a single-level TLIF (MIS and Open) were included. The pre- and post-operative ADH, PDH, MDH, and SL of MIS-TLIF group were 1.57 ± 0.33 cm, 0.79 ± 0.20 cm, 1.18 ± 0.21 cm, 7.36 ± 3.07 and 1.63 ± 0.30 cm, 1.02 ± 0.28 cm, 1.32 ± 0.24 cm, 10.24 ± 4.79 respectively. Whereas, the pre- and post-operative ADH, PDH, MDH, and SL of Open-TLIF group were 1.61 ± 0.40 cm, 0.77 ± 0.21 cm, 1.19 ± 0.24 cm, 9.05 ± 5.48 and 1.81 ± 0.33 cm, 0.98 ± 0.24 cm, 1.39 ± 0.24 cm, 12.34 ± 4,74 respectively. MIS- and Open-TLIF group showed no significant differences in low back VAS, leg VAS, and ODI both in pre-operation and post-operation (P > 0.05). Abstract Background Patients with severe oligospermia and nonobstructive azoospermia have very limited numbers of viable sperm in their epididymal and testicular samples. Thus, cryopreservation of their sperm is performed to avoid repeated sperm retrievals and to preserve their sperm from any side effects of any treatment regimens. Main body The development of intracytoplasmic sperm injection technology has extended the therapeutic capacity of assisted reproductive technology for men with azoospermia via the surgical or percutaneous isolation of sperm from the testis/epididymis. The conventional cryopreservation techniques are inadequate for preserving individually selected sperm. The technique for freezing single sperm was first developed in 1997 and has been explored from the perspective of frozen carriers, freezing programs, and cryoprotectant formulations. Among these methods, advances in frozen carriers have directly improved single-sperm freezing technology. In this review, we evaluate the different technologies for the cryopreservation of single sperm by discussing the advantages and disadvantages of different freezing methods, their clinical applications, and the outcomes for a range of frozen carriers. Conclusion Our review article describes the latest and current technologies implemented for the cryopreservation of single sperm that could potentially benefit patients with severe oligospermia and who rarely have any sperm in their ejaculate. This review provides a platform to understand the process and pitfalls of single-sperm cryopreservation to ensure further improvements in the cryopreservation technology in future studies.

Human spermatozoa proteomics exposed to some physical, biological or chemical stressors is being explored. However, there is a lack of optimized sample preparation methods to achieve in-depth protein coverage for sperm cells. Meanwhile, it is not clear whether antibiotics can regulate proteins to affect sperm quality. Here, we systematically compared a total of six different protein extraction methods based the combination of three commonly used lysis buffers and physical lysis strategies. The urea buffer combined with ultrasonication (UA-ultrasonication) produced the highest protein extraction rate, leading to the deepest coverage of human sperm proteome (5685 protein groups) from healthy human sperm samples. Since the antibiotics, amoxicillin and clarithromycin, have been widely used against H. pylori infection, we conduct a longitudinal study of sperm proteome via data-independent acquisition tandem mass spectrometry (DIA-MS/MS) on an infected patient during on and off therapy with these two drugs. The semen examination and morphological analysis were performed combined with proteomics analysis. Our results indicated that antibiotics may cause an increase in the sperm concentration and the rate of malformed sperm and disrupt proteome expression in sperm. This work provides an optimized extraction method to characterize the in-depth human sperm proteome and to extend its clinical applications.

This research aims to evaluate the influences of the freeze–thaw (F-T) effect on the energy dissipation mechanism and damage evolution characteristics of muddy siltstones containing initial damage. At first, four initial damage levels were achieved by applying different impact loads to the intact rock, and the damage stresses for levels I, II, III, and IV initial damage were 9.80 Mpa, 17.00 Mpa, 23.34 Mpa, and 32.54 Mpa, respectively. Then dynamic compression tests were conducted on the muddy siltstones containing initial damage after 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, and 40 F-T cycles in the temperature range from −20 to 20 °C. The damage variable of the muddy siltstones was determined by studying energy distribution during fracture of the rock. The damage evolution characteristics of the muddy siltstone containing initial damage under the F-T effect were explored combined with the fractal theory. Test results show that (1) the dynamic compressive strength of the muddy siltstones decreases exponentially with the increasing number of F-T cycles; the dynamic compressive strength of muddy siltstone with different initial damage decreased by 54.9%, 48.4%, 39.4%, 42.5%, and 44.5% after 40 freeze-thaws, respectively, compared with that of intact. (2) The absorbed energy, reflected energy, and transmitted energy of the muddy siltstones subject to different levels of initial damage exhibit step-like changes under the effect of F-T cycles and the rate of decrease in absorbed energy decreases in the late stage of F-T cycles. (3) Both the damage variable and the fractal dimension of the muddy siltstones show an increasing trend with an increase in the number of F-T cycles, and it is more difficult for damage to become superimposed as the damage accumulates to that range causing fatigue (the damage variables ranged from 0.73 to 0.97) while the fractal dimension of the fracture surfaces in the rock still increases. (4) With the gradual increase in the damage variable, the energy absorption density of the rock is negatively correlated with the fractal dimension of the rock fragments.

Preservation of human spermatozoa in vitro at normothermia or hypothermia maintaining their functions and fertility for several days plays a significant role in reproductive biology and medicine. However, it is well known that human spermatozoa left in vitro deteriorate over time irreversibly as the consequence of various stresses such as the change of osmolarity, energy deficiency, and oxidative damage, leading to substantial limitations including the need for semen examinations, fertility preservation, and assisted reproductive technology. These problems may be addressed with the aid of non-freezing storage techniques. The main and most effective preservation strategies are the partial or total replacement of seminal plasma with culture medium, named as extenders, and temperature-induced metabolic restriction. Semen extenders consist of buffers, osmolytes, and antioxidants, etc. to protect spermatozoa against the above-mentioned adverse factors. Extended preservation of human spermatozoa in vitro has a negative effect on sperm parameters, whereas its effect on ART outcomes remains inconsistent. The storage duration, temperature, and pre-treatment of semen should be determined according to the aims of preservation. Advanced techniques such as nanotechnology and omics have been introduced and show great potential in the lifespan extension of human sperm. It is certain that more patients will benefit from it in the near future. This review provided an overview of the current knowledge and prospects of prolonged non-freezing storage of human sperm in vitro.

Coastal wetland soil organic carbon (CW-SOC) is crucial for both “blue carbon” and carbon sequestration. It is of great significance to understand the content of soil organic carbon (SOC) in soil resource management. A total of 133 soil samples were evaluated using an indoor spectral curve and were categorized into silty soil and sandy soil. The prediction model of CW-SOC was established using optimized support vector machine regression (OSVR) and optimized random forest regression (ORFR). The Leave-One-Out Cross-Validation (LOO-CV) method was used to verify the model, and the performance of the two prediction models, as well as the models’ stability and uncertainty, was examined. The results show that (1) The SOC content of different coastal wetlands is significantly different, and the SOC content of silty soils is about 1.8 times that of sandy soils. Moreover, the characteristic wavelengths associated with SOC in silty soils are mainly concentrated in the spectral range of 500–1000 nm and 1900–2400 nm, while the spectral range of sandy soils is concentrated in the spectral range of 600–1400 nm and 1700–2400 nm. (2) The organic carbon prediction model of silty soil based on the OSVR method under the first-order differential of reflectance (R′) is the best, with the Adjusted-R2 value as high as 0.78, the RPD value is much greater than 2.0 and 5.07, and the RMSE value as low as 0.07. (3) The performance of the OSVR model is about 15~30% higher than that of the support vector machine regression (SVR) model, and the performance of the ORFR model is about 3~5% higher than that of the random forest regression (RFR) model. OSVR and ORFR are better methods of accurately predicting the CW-SOC content and provide data support for the carbon cycle, soil conservation, plant growth, and environmental protection of coastal wetlands.

Multiple morphological abnormalities of the sperm flagella (MMAF) is a cause of male infertility. Here the authors identify homozygous nonsense mutations of the glutamine rich 2 (QRICH2) gene in two MMAF patients from 2 consanguineous families and show using QRICH2 knockout mice that the protein is required for sperm flagellar formation and motility.

Objective: Right ventricular (RV) dysfunction is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality after surgical correction of tetralogy of Fallot (TOF). Transatrial/transpulmonary repair avoids a ventriculotomy (in contrast to the transventricular approach) in order to preserve the structure and function of the right ventricle. We performed a pilot prospective randomized controlled trial in infants with TOF undergoing primary repair. Methods: A pilot prospective controlled clinical trial was conducted in infants with TOF undergoing primary repair between January 2008 and December 2009. One hundred and six patients were recruited in the trial and divided into a transatrial–transpulmonary approach group (Group A; n = 53) and a transventricular approach group (Group B; n = 53), depending on the different surgical techniques used. Results: Preoperative patient characteristics and procedure-related variables were similar. There were no deaths in Group A, while two patients died in Group B. There were significant differences in cardiopulmonary bypass time (95.02 ± 23.8 vs. 85.23 ± 22.63 minutes, p = 0.032), cross-clamp time (69.4 ± 10.36 vs. 61.17 ± 9.38 minutes, p = 0.035), inotropic support (1.63 ± 0.97 vs. 2.1 ± 1.09 days, p = 0.02), intubation time (26.62 ± 12.48 vs. 33.02 ± 17.55 hours, p = 0.033), duration of stay in the intensive care unit (ICU) (2.25 ± 1.28 vs. 2.85 ± 1.46 days, p = 0.026), and the incidence of arrhythmia [3 patients (5.7%) vs. 10 patients (18.9%), p = 0.038]. No significant differences in right/left ventricular pressure ratio and hospital stay were observed. Conclusion: Transatrial/transpulmonary repair of TOF is associated with excellent surgical results and immediately follow-up.
