Abstract

Novel species of fungi described in the present study include the following from Malaysia: Castanediella eucalypti from Eucalyptus pellita, Codinaea acacia from Acacia mangium, Emarcea eucalyptigena from Eucalyptus brassiana, Myrtapenidiella eucalyptorum from Eucalyptus pellita, Pilidiella eucalyptigena from Eucalyptus brassiana and Strelitziana malaysiana from Acacia mangium. 19. Climatic favourability zones for Eucalyptus rust in Brazil.

Abstract

Brazilian forest-based industries are supported by more than 5.5 million hectares of Eucalyptus growing under different climatic conditions with different degrees of favourability for rust Puccinia psidii, including both traditional and expanding areas, where such disease is of major concern for the industry, foresters and scientists. The main objective of this study was to define favourable climatic zones for Eucalyptus rust in Brazil with the following aims: (i) to develop a spatial method for estimating the mean night-time temperature ( Tng); (ii) to assess and validate a Eucalyptus rust model; and (iii) to map Eucalyptus rust favourability zones in Brazil based on the proposed model. A straightforward method, based only on latitude, day of the year, maximum and minimum air temperatures, was developed to estimate Tng, which is a key variable for a proper application of Ruiz rust model. Based on 37 field experiments with natural rust occurrence, it was observed that climatic conditions are determining factors for disease severity. Significant correlations between disease severity observed in the field and climatic conditions were found: a negative correlation with temperature ( r = .50, p < .01) and a positive correlation with relative humidity ( r = .89, p < .0001). A significant correlation ( r = .81, p < .0001) between the normalized infection index, produced from Ruiz model, and the average rust score was also observed. Once the model was validated under field conditions, it was applied using historical average data of air temperature and leaf wetness duration to obtain monthly Eucalyptus rust favourability maps for the whole country. These final maps show that favourable climatic zones for Eucalyptus rust are extremely dynamic, with high temporal and spatial variability in Brazil and that climatic conditions should be considered for expansion of Eucalyptus to new areas, in breeding programmes, and for defining the most suitable seasons for forest establishment in each climate of the country. 22. Genetics of anthracnose panel canker disease resistance and its relationship with yield and growth characters in half-sib progenies of rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis)

Muell-Arg] anthracnose panel canker disease resistance, caused by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides (Penz.) Sacc., and growth and yield characters were assessed at three years old in the nursery, in 18 half-sib progenies. There were highly significant (P < 0.01) genetic differences among progenies for most characters. The genetic component of variance accounted for 3.37, 6.07, 12.74, 12.13, 19.82 and 3.58% of the phenotypic variance for anthracnose-infected area, anthracnose lesion stripe length, yield, girth, virgin bark thickness and total number of latex Vessel rings, respectively. Narrow-sense heritability estimates for the above characters were 13.45, 24.30, 50.97, 48.52, 79.30 and 14.30%, respectively. No significant genetic correlations were found among anthracnose panel canker resistance, yield and growth characters. The frequency distribution of anthracnose-infected area and anthracnose lesion stripe length suggests polygenic control. Selecting the best three progenies out of 18 progenies would result in a genetic gain of 12.87 and 24.24% for infected area and lesion stripe length, respectively. The best five selected individuals out of 50 individuals within each progeny would result in a genetic gain of 9.47 and 24.62%, with a total gain of 22.34 and 48.87% for these two characters, respectively. Abstract

This study was aimed to evaluate the behaviour of eighteen clones of Hevea brasiliensis (rubber) against South American leaf blight and to study progress of the disease. The experiment was conducted in Cachoeiro de Itapemirim- ES, where 18 clones were evaluated. The experimental design was a randomized block with four replicates; each experimental unit consisted of three plants. Evaluations were performed at 15-day intervals on 30 leaflets per tree. Disease incidence was quantified and infection classified according to the stages of development and type of damage. Leaf blight occurred during the entire experimental period; however, disease intensity varied with the resistance level of the clones and the time of year. Clones FX 3864, RRIM 725, RRIM 711, IAC 300 and IAN 873 exhibited the highest resistance to leaf blight. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

32. Effect of temperature and leaf wetness duration on infection of sweet oranges by Asiatic citrus canker.

Abstract

Asiatic citrus canker, caused by Xanthomonas smithii ssp. citri, formerly X. axonopodis pv. citri, is one of the most serious phytosanitary problems in Brazilian citrus crops. Experiments were conducted under controlled conditions to assess the influence of temperature and leaf wetness duration on infection and subsequent symptom development of citrus canker in sweet orange cvs Hamlin, Natal, Pera and Valencia. The quantified variables were incubation period, disease incidence, disease severity, mean lesion density and mean lesion size at temperatures of 12, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40 and 42°C, and leaf wetness durations of 0, 4, 8, 12, 16, 20 and 24 h. Symptoms did not develop at 42°C. A generalized beta function showed a good fit to the temperature data, severity being highest in the range 30–35°C. The relationship between citrus canker severity and leaf wetness duration was explained by a monomolecular model, with the greatest severity occurring at 24 h of leaf wetness, with 4 h of wetness being the minimum duration sufficient to cause 100% incidence at optimal temperatures of 25–35°C. Mean lesion density behaved similarly to disease severity in relation to temperature variation and leaf wetness duration. A combined monomolecular-beta generalized model fitted disease severity, mean lesion density or lesion size as a function of both temperature and duration of leaf wetness. The estimated minimum and maximum temperatures for the occurrence of disease were 12°C and 40°C, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

O presente trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar, por meio do isolamento e seleção de fungos, o potencial degradador dos mesmos em tocos de Eucalyptusspp., a fim de desenvolver uma alternativa para o processo convencional da retirada de tocos em povoamentos de Eucalyptus spp. Para tanto, foram coletados discos de tocos deteriorados de eucalipto no campo, e a partir destes foram isolados os fungos. A fim de verificar opotencial de degradação de madeira dos fungos isolados, estes foram testados noexperimento de pré-seleção. Foi realizada a identificação molecular dos isolados que apresentaram potencial de degradação no experimento de pré-seleção. Os fungos selecionados como potencial degradadores da madeira foram avaliados em ensaio de apodrecimento acelerado para detectar a real capacidade de deterioração. Após este ensaio, foi realizada a análise química da madeira deteriorada para verificar quais constituintes da madeira foram deteriorados pelos fungos.Opotencial de degradaçãoem tocos no campo pelos fungos selecionadosfoi avaliado com o auxilio de um penetrômetro de impacto e por meio da velocidade de propagação das ondas de tensão (Stress wave timer),após quatro meses da inoculação.O isolamento de fungos a partir de tocos no campo permitiu a obtenção de7fungos com potencial de degradação de madeirade eucalipto. Os fungos identificados foram Resiniciumconfertum, Phanerochaetechrysosporium e Trichodermacitrinoviride.A análise química determinou, de maneira geral, a maior preferência pela lignina na posição da madeira mais consumida. Foi observada a presença dos fungos nos tocosinoculadosapós o términodo ensaio de campo, porém a degradação teve pouca variação em relação aos tocos não inoculados. Na reforma do povoamento florestal, após o corte das árvores, as cepas remanescentes de Eucalyptus spp. devem ser retiradas. A degradação natural de cepas de eucalipto após o corte raso é lenta. A destoca mecânica eleva o custo de produção, envolve tráfego de máquinas sobre o solo favorecendo a sua compactação e dificultando o crescimento e a distribuição das raízes. Uma alternativa para retirada destas cepas remanescentes é o emprego de fungos decompositores. Objetivou-se com a pesquisa coletar, isolar, selecionar e identificar fungos com potencial de deteriorar madeira de eucalipto, a partir de fragmentos de cepas apodrecidas, para serem utilizados em um ensaio de apodrecimento acelerado e realizar a análise química de madeiras sadias e deterioradas pelos fungos isolados das cepas, que apresentaram maior capacidade de deterioração, para verificar, quais os componentes da madeira sofreram maiores alterações em função da deterioração causa pelos fungos. Amostras de cepas de eucalipto, em decomposição, foram coletadas em plantios comerciais, em três municípios, com microclimas e altitudes diferentes e acondicionadas em sacos de papel poroso e transportadas para o Laboratório de Ciência da Madeira (LCM), no Departamento de Engenharia Florestal (DEF), pertencente ao Centro de Ciências Agrárias (CCA) da Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo (UFES) no município de Jerônimo Monteiro, ES. No LCM foram retiradas amostras de madeira para realizar o isolamento dos fungos e posteriormente a obtenção de culturas puras, em meio de cultura Batata-Dextrose-Ágar (BDA). Nove culturas puras foram isoladas e identificadas, sendo, três fungos pertencentes à Classe dos Basidiomycetes (Basidiomicetos 1, 2 e 3), quatro do gênero Trichoderma, um Lasiodiplodia e um Penicillium. As culturas foram selecionadas, repicadas em placa de Petri e tubos de ensaio contendo BDA e armazenadas em sala climatizada a 25 ± 2 °C e utilizadas no ensaio de apodrecimento acelerado. Após 12 semanas de ensaio, pode-se concluir que os fungos isolados mais eficientes na deterioração da madeira foram os pertencentes à Classe dos Basidiomycetes (Basidiomiceto 1 e Basidiomiceto 2). A análise química da madeira pelos Basidiomicetos 1 e 2, revelou que houve um incremento no teor de extrativos totais na madeira, para ambos Basidiomicetos testados. Para a holocelulose (celulose + hemiceluloses), ocorreram pequenas diferenças entre as madeiras sadias e deterioradas (variações médias em torno de 1%). Abstract

Novel species of fungi described in the present study include the following from Malaysia: Castanediella eucalypti from Eucalyptus pellita, Codinaea acacia from Acacia mangium, Emarcea eucalyptigena from Eucalyptus brassiana, Myrtapenidiella eucalyptorum from Eucalyptus pellita, Pilidiella eucalyptigena from Eucalyptus brassiana and Strelitziana malaysiana from Acacia mangium. Furthermore, Stachybotrys sansevieriicola is described from Sansevieria ehrenbergii (Tanzania), Phacidium grevilleae from Grevillea robusta (Uganda), Graphium jumulu from Adansonia gregorii and Ophiostoma eucalyptigena from Eucalyptus marginata (Australia), Pleurophoma ossicola from bone and Plectosphaerella populi from Populus nigra (Germany), Colletotrichum neosansevieriae from Sansevieria trifasciata, Elsinoë othonnae from Othonna quinquedentata and Zeloasperisporium cliviae (Zeloasperisporiaceae fam. nov.) from Clivia sp. Tephrocybella (Basidiomycetes) represents a novel genus from wood (Italy). Morphological and culture characteristics along with ITS DNA barcodes are provided for all taxa.
