We present results from an XMM-Newton observation of the head-tail radio galaxy IC 310 located in the southwest region of the Perseus cluster. The spectrum is well-fitted by an absorbed power-law model with a photon index of $2.50 \pm 0.02$ with no significant absorption excess. The X-ray image shows a point-like emission at IC 310 without any signs of a structure correlated with the radio halo tail. The temperature of the intracluster medium surrounding IC 310 declines as a function of distance from the cluster center, from $ kT \sim 6$ keV in the northeast corner of the field of view to about 3 keV in the southwest region. Although we do not find any sharp edges in the surface brightness profile, a brightness excess over a smooth $\beta$ model by about 20% is seen. The temperature also rises by about 10% in the same region. This indicates that the IC 310 region is a subcluster probably infalling into the Perseus cluster, and the gas in front of IC 310 towards the Perseus cluster is likely to be compressed by the large-scale motion, which supports the view that the IC 310 system is undergoing a merger., Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures (including color), accepted for publication in PASJ

We present an analysis of mock spectral observation of warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) using a constrained simulation of the local universe. The simulated map of oxygen emission lines from local WHIM reproduces well the observed structures traced by galaxies in the real local universe. We further attempt to perform mock observations of outer parts of simulated Coma cluster and A3627 adopting the expected performance of DIOS (Diffuse Intergalactic Oxygen Surveyor), which is proposed as a dedicated soft X-ray mission to search for cosmic missing baryons. We find that WHIMs surrounding nearby clusters are detectable with a typical exposure time of a day, and thus constitute realistic and promising targets for DIOS. We also find that an X-ray emitting clump in front of Coma cluster, recently reported in the XMM-Newton observation, has a counterpart in the simulated local universe, and its observed spectrum can be well reproduced in the simulated local universe if the gas temperature is set to the observationally estimated value., Comment: 25 pages, 3 tables, 16 figures. We present our proposal for a small X-ray mission DIOS (Diffuse Intergalactic Oxygen Surveyor) to perform survey observations of warm-hot intergalactic medium using OVII and OVIII emission lines. This will be proposed to a small satellite program planned by ISAS/JAXA in Japan for a launch in 2008. The instrument consists of an array of TES microcalorimeters with an energy resolution 2 eV, cooled by mechanical coolers. The X-ray telescope will employ 4-stage reflection mirrors with a focal length as short as 70 cm and an angular resolution 2'. In addition to DIOS, we briefly describe the NeXT (New X-ray Telescope) mission, which is a larger Japanese X-ray observatory to be launched in 2010 and plans to explore non-thermal processes in the universe., Comment: 6 pages, 9 figures. The Astro-E2 high resolution X-Ray Spectrometer (XRS) is expected to provide a major enhancement in study of clusters of galaxies. Astro-E2 is the fifth Japanese X-ray astronomy observatory, which is scheduled for launch in early 2005. The XRS instrument, developed under a Japan-US collaboration, is an X-ray microcalorimeter with a capability of observing extended objects, and a high energy resolution of about 6 eV at 6 keV. The spectral resolving power is 20 times higher than CCDs over the 0.5-10 keV energy band. We have obtained several new results of clusters with Chandra and XMM, which show that high-resolution imaging spectroscopy can clarify some outstanding questions. New sciences from Astro-E2 include the first clear measurement of gas velocities, determination of ion and electron temperatures, and electron densities based on the resolved line features. We present results from a Chandra observation of the core region of the nearby X-ray bright galaxy cluster AWM7. There are blob-like substructures, which are seen in the energy band 2--10 keV, within 10 kpc (20'') of the cD galaxy NGC1129, and the brightest sub-peak has a spatial extent more than 4 kpc. We also notice that the central soft X-ray peak is slightly offset from the optical center by 1 kpc. These structures have no correlated features in optical, infrared, or radio band. Energy spectrum of the hard sub-peak indicates a temperature higher than 3 keV with a metallicity less than 0.3 solar, or a power-law spectrum with photon index 1.2. A hardness ratio map and a narrow Fe-K band image jointly indicate two Fe-rich blobs symmetrically located around the cD galaxy, with the direction perpendicular to the sub-peak direction. In larger scales (r<60 kpc), the temperature gradually drops from 4 keV to 2 keV toward the cluster center and the metal abundance rises steeply to a peak of 1.5 solar at r=7 kpc. These results indicate that a dynamical process is going on in the central region of AWM7, which probably creates heated gas blobs and drives metal injection., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures (including color), accepted for publication in ApJ. Chandra observation of the central region of the A1060 cluster of galaxies resolved X-ray emission from two giant elliptical galaxies, NGC 3311 and NGC 3309. The emission from these galaxies consists of two components, namely the hot interstellar medium (ISM) and the low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs). We found the spatial extent of the ISM component was much smaller than that of stars for both galaxies, while the ratios of X-ray to optical blue-band luminosities were rather low but within the general scatter for elliptical galaxies. After subtracting the LMXB component, the ISM is shown to be in pressure balance with the intracluster medium of A1060 at the outer boundary of the ISM. These results imply that the hot gas supplied from stellar mass loss is confined by the external pressure of the intracluster medium, with the thermal conduction likely to be suppressed. The cD galaxy NGC 3311 does not exhibit the extended potential structure which is commonly seen in bright elliptical galaxies, and we discuss the possible evolution history of the very isothermal cluster A1060., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, Latex2e(emulateapj5), accepted in ApJ

We present results from a Chandra observation of Abell 1060, the nearby cluster of galaxies. The ACIS-I image shows that the central cusp-like structure, previously seen from PSPC, is caused mainly by an emission from the central elliptical galaxy NGC 3311. We confirmed that the central region is remarkably isothermal with a temperature of 3.2 keV, based on the spectral fits for fine pixels. An extended region in the northeast of NGC 3311 indicates high iron abundance. The surface brightness profile excluding the central galaxy, NGC 3311, can be fitted only by a double beta model, with core radii about 40 and 140 kpc, out to a radius of about 200 kpc. We present two-dimensional temperature map of the Perseus cluster based on multi-pointing observations with the ASCA GIS, covering a region with a diameter of ~2^\circ. By correcting for the effect of the X-ray telescope response, the temperatures were estimated from hardness ratios and the complete temperature structure of the cluster with a spatial resolution of about 100 kpc was obtained for the first time. There is an extended cool region with a diameter of ~20' and kT ~5 keV at about 20' east from the cluster center. This region also shows higher surface brightness and is surrounded by a large ring-like hot region with kT > 7 keV, and likely to be a remnant of a merger with a poor cluster. Another extended cool region is extending outward from the IC 310 subcluster. These features and the presence of several other hot and cool blobs suggest that this rich cluster has been formed as a result of a repetition of many subcluster mergers., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures (including color), accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

We present two-dimensional temperature maps of three bright clusters of galaxies Abell 1060, AWM7, and the Centaurus cluster, based on multi-pointing observations with the ASCA GIS. The temperatures are derived from hardness ratios by taking into account the XRT response. For the Centaurus cluster, we subtracted the central cool component using the previous ASCA and ROSAT results, and the metallicity gradients observed in AWM7 and the Centaurus cluster were included in deriving the temperatures. The intracluster medium in Abell 1060 and AWM7 is almost isothermal from the center to outer regions with a temperature of 3.3 and 3.9 keV, respectively. The Centaurus cluster exhibits remarkable hot regions within about 30' from the cluster center showing a temperature increase of +0.8 keV from the surrounding level of 3.5 keV, and outer cool regions with lower temperatures by -1.3 keV. These results imply that a strong merger has occurred in the Centaurus in the recent 2-3 Gyr, and the central cool component has survived it. In contrast, the gas in Abell 1060 was well-mixed in an early period, which probably has prevented the development of the central cool component. ASCA observation of a region containing a Class 0 protostar, IRAS 20386+6751 in the L1157 dark cloud, has been carried out. The protostar was not detected, and the 95% upper limit to the luminosity depends on assumed Nh : Lx(0.5-10 keV) < 1.1e31 erg/s for Nh = 1e23 cm^-2. A Class I protostar in L1152, IRAS 20353+6742, in the same field was also undetected with the upper limit about three times as much as the L1157 level. Besides these non detections, nine new X-ray sources were detected and spectral analysis was performed for 4 sources. One object (AXJ 2038+6801) shows a hard spectrum with a temperature kT = 8 keV or a power-law photon index = 2.0 and absorbed with Nh = 2e22 cm^-2. Another fainter one (AXJ 2036+6800) has a soft spectrum with most of the emission falling below 2 keV. Based on mapping observations with ASCA, an unusual hot region with a spatial extent of 1 square degree was discovered between M87 and M49 at a center coordinate of R. A. = 12h 27m 36s and Dec. = $9^\circ18'$ (J2000). The X-ray emission from the region has a 2-10 keV flux of $1 \times 10^{-11}$ ergs s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ and a temperature of $kT \gtrsim 4$ keV, which is significantly higher than that in the surrounding medium of $\sim 2$ keV. The internal thermal energy in the hot region is estimated to be $V n k T \sim 10^{60}$ ergs with a gas density of $\sim 10^{-4}$ cm$^{-3}$. A power-law spectrum with a photon index $1.7-2.3$ is also allowed by the data. The hot region suggests there is an energy input due to a shock which is probably caused by the motion of the gas associated with M49, infalling toward the M87 cluster with a velocity $\gtrsim 1000$ km s$^{-1}$., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, accepted to ApJL

We present ASCA results on the distributions of metallicity and temperature in 3 bright near-by clusters: A4059, MKW 3s and 2A 0335+096. A significant gradient in the metal abundance is detected in A4059, while other clusters suggest similar gradients with low significance. These features together with recent results on AWM 7 and Perseus clusters suggest that metals injected in the ICM are not effectively mixed in the cluster space. Analysis of the GIS data, without explicitly including the cooling flow model, shows no substantial temperature drop at large radii (at half the virial radii) for the 3 systems. This is contrary to the recent results for 30 clusters by Markevitch et al. (1998) who assume rather strong cooling flows. The gas mass fraction of these clusters are 10-15% within 1 Mpc, which suggests that baryonic fraction of about 20% including the stellar mass is a common level in galaxy groups and clusters., Comment: 25 pages, 21 figures; accepted by PASJ; uses PASJ95.sty, PASJ2.sty, and PASJadd.sty

Background counts on the XRS Calorimeter spectrometer of Astro-E2 have several sources, including primary cosmic rays and secondary particles interacting with the pixels and with the silicon structure of the array. After rejecting events coincident between pixels or between a pixel and the anti-coincidence detector behind the calorimeter array, the residual background on the ground in the 0.1 - 10 keV band is 1e-3 counts/s (8e-3 counts/s/sq cm). We will present the details of the ground background events and the rejection criteria required lo remove them while minimizing deadtime. We will also present preliminary analysis of the in-orbit background.

We present two-dimensional temperature map of the Perseus cluster based on multi-pointing observations with the Advanced Spacecraft for Cosmology Astrophysics (ASCA) Gas Imaging Spectrometer (GIS), covering a region with a diameter of approximately 2 deg. By correcting for the effect of the X-ray telescope response, the temperatures were estimated from hardness ratios and the complete temperature structure of the cluster with a spatial resolution of about 100 kpc was obtained for the first time. There is an extended cool region with a diameter of approximately 20 arcmin and kT approx. 5 keV at about 20 arcmin east from the cluster center. This region also shows higher surface brightness and is surrounded by a large ring-like hot region with kT approx. > 7 keV, and likely to be a remnant of a merger with a poor cluster. Another extended cool region is extending outward from the IC 310 subcluster. These features and the presence of several other hot and cool blobs suggest that this rich cluster has been formed as a result of a repetition of many subcluster mergers.
