Across the 28 EU member states there were nearly half a million premature deaths in 2015 as a result of exposure to PM2.5, O3 and NO2. To set the target for air quality levels and avoid negative impacts for human and ecosystems health, the National Emission Ceilings Directive (NECD, 2016/2284/EU) sets objectives for emission reduction for SO2, NOx, NMVOCs, NH3 and PM2.5 for each Member State as percentages of reduction to be reached in 2020 and 2030 compared to the emission levels into 2005. One of the innovations of NECD is Article 9, that mentions the issue of “monitoring air pollution impacts” on ecosystems. We provide a clear picture of what is available in term of monitoring network for air pollution impacts on Italian ecosystems, summarizing what has been done to control air pollution and its effects on different ecosystems in Italy. We provide an overview of the impacts of air pollution on health of the Italian population and evaluate opportunities and implementation of Article 9 in the Italian context, as a case study beneficial for all Member States. The results showed that SO42− deposition strongly decreased in all monitoring sites in Italy over the period 1999–2017, while NO3− and NH4+ decreased more slightly. As a consequence, most of the acid-sensitive sites which underwent acidification in the 1980s partially recovered. The O3 concentration at forest sites showed a decreasing trend. Consequently, AOT40 (the metric identified to protect vegetation from ozone pollution) showed a decrease, even if values were still above the limit for forest protection (5000 ppb h−1), while PODy (flux-based metric under discussion as new European legislative standard for forest protection) showed an increase. National scale studies pointed out that PM10 and NO2 induced about 58,000 premature deaths (year 2005), due to cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. Hybrid nanostructures with switchable and reversible “blue-red-green” emission were efficiently synthesized. These nanostructures comprise polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) that behave as a nanocage that can be functionalized with terpyridine-based organic ligands, which can be easily complexed with europium (III) ions. The complexes were characterized by UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy and their stoichiometry was also confirmed by H NMR spectroscopy. In the presence of the Eu(III) ions, the octafunctionalized nanocages self-assemble to form 3D architectures that display an intense red-emission, especially in the solid state. The presence of an alkenyl group bridging the inorganic core to the organic moiety was employed to tune the emission properties by trans-cis isomerization of the double bond. In the case of the octafunctionalized nanocages (O-POSS), this isomerization was monitored in the presence of Eu(III) cations and was accompanied by an evident colour change from blue (trans-O-POSS) to red (Eu@trans-O-POSS) and finally to green (cis-O-POSS) as consequence of the release of the metal cations. This behaviour, together with the easy dispersion of the dry powder and the possibility of coating as a film in presence of small amounts of solvent, makes the emissive solid promising for applications in materials science.

The Division Models and Technologies for Risks Reduction of the ENEA Sustainability Department was established in July 2015 with the specific aim of assemble all the resources, both human and instrumental, that could propose reflections, analyzes and assessments about the interactions among energy strategies, emissions of pollutants and greenhouse gases, air quality, climate change and resulting impacts on health and ecosystems. The use of numerical models, at different spatial scales, to describe the physical and chemical processes affecting the atmosphere and the ocean is at the hearth of the history and activities of the research groups involved. Nevertheless, great effort and commitment was also dedicated to the development of integrated models to explore links and feedback between the different aspects of the same system. These unique platforms called IAM (Integrated Assessment Modelling) help and support policy-makers to develop and promote sustainable policies. With this vision we have been developing the national model MINNI (Integrated National Model in support to the International Negotiation on Air Pollution) since 2003. It includes the Integrated Assessment Model GAINS-Italia, which helped our Country: to negotiate revisions of European and International Directives and Protocols with technical data and national scenario simulations; to support technically the actions needed to deal with European infringement procedures; to help the Regional Authorities to fully understand and use the measurements until they have become totally autonomous; to support the early season of the Air Quality Regional Plans together with the assessment of the measures identified in them. A parallel and equally far-sighted vision has been offered by our colleagues of the actual Division who have been dealing for years with the “pollution effects”. he responses to mild root zone salinity stress were investigated in two co-occurring Mediterranean woody evergreens, Quercus ilex L. and Arbutus unedo L., which differ in morpho-anatomical traits and strategies to cope with water deficit. The aim was to explore their strategies to allocate potentially toxic ions at organism level, and the consequential physiological and biochemical adjustments. Water and ionic relations, gas exchange and PSII performance, the concentration of photosynthetic pigments, and the activity of antioxidant defences, were measured. Q. ilex displayed a greater capacity to exclude Na + and Cl-from the leaf than A. unedo, in part as a consequence of greater reductions in transpiration rates. Salt-induced reductions in CO 2 assimilation resulted in Q. ilex suffering from excess of light to a greater extent than A. unedo. Consistently, in Q. ilex effective mechanisms of nonphotochemical quenching, also sustained by the lutein epoxide-lutein cycle, operated in response to salinity stress. Q. ilex also displayed a superior capacity to detoxify reactive oxygen species (ROS) than A. unedo. Our data suggest that the ability to exclude salt from actively growing shoot organs depends on the metabolic cost of sustaining leaf construction, i.e. species-specific leaf life-span, and the relative strategies to cope with salt-induced water stress. We discuss how contrasting abilities to restrict the entry and transport of salt in sensitive organs relates with species-specific salt tolerance.

Aloe contains several active compounds including aloin, a C-glycoside that can be hydrolyzed in the gut to form aloe-emodin anthrone which, in turn, is auto-oxidized to the quinone aloe-emodin. On the basis of the claimed hepatoprotective activity of some antraquinones, we studied aloe-emodin in a rat model of carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) intoxication, since this xenobiotic induces acute liver damage by lipid peroxidation subsequent to free radical production. Twelve rats were treated with CCl4 (3 mg/kg) intraperitoneally and six were protected with two intraperitoneally injections of aloe-emodin (50 mg/kg; CCl4+aloe-emodin); six other rats were only aloe-emodin injected (aloe-emodin) and six were untreated (control). Histological examination of the livers showed less marked lesions in the CCl4+aloe-emodin rats than in tho se treated wi th CCl4 alone, and this was confirmed by the serum levels of L-aspartate-2- oxoglutate-aminotransferase (394+/-38.6 UI/l in CCl4, 280+/-24.47 UI/l in CCl4+aloe-emodin rats; P<0.05). We also quantified changes in hepatic albumin and tumour necrosis factor- mRNAs. Albumin mRNA expression was significantly lower only in the liver of CCl4 rats (P<0.05 versus control) and was only slightly reduced in the CCl4+aloe-emodin rats. In contrast tumour necrosis factor- mRNA was significantly higher (P<0.05) in the CCl4, than the control rats and almost equal in the CCl4+aloe-emodin, aloe-emodin and control groups. In conclusion, aloe-emodin appears to have some protective effect not only against hepatocyte death but also on the inflammatory response subsequent to lipid peroxidation.
