We develop an accretion disc (AD) fitting method, utilising thin and slim disc models and Bayesian inference with the Markov-Chain Monte-Carlo approach, testing it on the most luminous known quasar, SMSS J215728.21-360215.1, at redshift $z=4.692$. With a spectral energy distribution constructed from near-infrared spectra and broadband photometry, the AD models find a black hole mass of $\log(M_{\rm{AD}}/M_{\odot}) = 10.31^{+0.17}_{-0.14}$ with an anisotropy-corrected bolometric luminosity of $\log{(L_{\rm{bol}}/\rm{erg\,s^{-1}})} = 47.87 \pm 0.10$, and derive an Eddington ratio of $0.29^{+0.11}_{-0.10}$ as well as a radiative efficiency of $0.09^{+0.05}_{-0.03}$. Using the near-infrared spectra, we estimate the single-epoch virial black hole mass estimate to be $\log(M_{\rm{SE}}/M_{\odot}) = 10.33 \pm 0.08$, with a monochromatic luminosity at 3000\AA\ of $\log{(L(\rm{3000\text{\AA}})/\rm{erg\,s^{-1}})} = 47.66 \pm 0.01$. As an independent approach, AD fitting has the potential to complement the single-epoch virial mass method in obtaining stronger constraints on properties of massive quasar black holes across a wide range of redshifts., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures, 3 tables

While the slope of the dust attenuation curve ($\delta$) is found to correlate with effective dust attenuation ($A_V$) as obtained through spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting, it remains unknown how the fitting degeneracies shape this relation. We examine the degeneracy effects by fitting SEDs of a sample of local star-forming galaxies (SFGs) selected from the Galaxy And Mass Assembly survey, in conjunction with mock galaxy SEDs of known attenuation parameters. A well-designed declining starburst star formation history is adopted to generate model SED templates with intrinsic UV slope ($\beta_0$) spanning over a reasonably wide range. The best-fitting $\beta_0$ for our sample SFGs shows a wide coverage, dramatically differing from the limited range of $\beta_0, Comment: 21 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in the MNRAS, Comments welcome!

We analyze Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer observations of nine low-redshift (z < 0.1) Palomar-Green quasar host galaxies to investigate the spatial distribution and kinematics of the warm, ionized interstellar medium, with the goal of searching for and constraining the efficiency of active galactic nucleus (AGN) feedback. After separating the bright AGN from the starlight and nebular emission, we use pixel-wise, kpc-scale diagnostics to determine the underlying excitation mechanism of the line emission, and we measure the kinematics of the narrow-line region (NLR) to estimate the physical properties of the ionized outflows. The radial size of the NLR correlates with the AGN luminosity, reaching scales of $\sim 5\,$kpc and beyond. The geometry of the NLR is well-represented by a projected biconical structure, suggesting that the AGN radiation preferably escapes through the ionization cone. We find enhanced velocity dispersions ($\sim 100\,$km$\,$s$^{-1}$) traced by the H$\alpha$ emission line in localized zones within the ionization cones. Interpreting these kinematic features as signatures of interaction between an AGN-driven ionized gas outflow and the host galaxy interstellar medium, we derive mass outflow rates of $\sim 0.008-1.6\, M_\odot \,$yr$^{-1}$ and kinetic injection rates of $\sim 10^{39}-10^{42} \,$erg$\,$s$^{-1}$, which yield extremely low coupling efficiencies of $\lesssim 10^{-3}$. We report the discovery of a bright (g = 14.5 mag (AB), K = 11.9 mag (Vega)) quasar at redshift z = 0.83 -- the optically brightest (unbeamed) quasar at z > 0.4. SMSS J114447.77-430859.3, at a Galactic latitude of b = +18.1deg, was identified by its optical colours from the SkyMapper Southern Survey (SMSS) during a search for symbiotic binary stars. Optical and near-infrared spectroscopy reveals broad MgII, H-beta, H-alpha, and Pa-beta emission lines, from which we measure a black hole mass of log10(M_BH/M_Sun) = 9.4 +/- 0.5. With its high luminosity, L_bol = (4.7 +/- 1.0) * 10^47 erg/s or M_i(z=2) = -29.74 mag (AB), we estimate an Eddington ratio of ~1.4. As the most luminous quasar known over the last ~9 Gyr of cosmic history, having a luminosity 8 times greater than 3C 273, the source offers a range of potential follow-up opportunities., 13 pages. We present a catalog of spectroscopically measured redshifts over $0 < z < 2$ and emission line fluxes for 1440 galaxies. The majority ($\sim$65\%) of the galaxies come from the HALO7D survey, with the remainder from the DEEPwinds program. This catalog includes redshifts for 646 dwarf galaxies with $\log(M_{\star}/M_{\odot}) < 9.5$. 810 catalog galaxies did not have previously published spectroscopic redshifts, including 454 dwarf galaxies. HALO7D used the DEIMOS spectrograph on the Keck II telescope to take very deep (up to 32 hours exposure, with a median of $\sim$7 hours) optical spectroscopy in the COSMOS, EGS, GOODS-North, and GOODS-South CANDELS fields, and in some areas outside CANDELS. We compare our redshift results to existing spectroscopic and photometric redshifts in these fields, finding only a 1\% rate of discrepancy with other spectroscopic redshifts. We measure a small increase in median photometric redshift error (from 1.0\% to 1.3\%) and catastrophic outlier rate (from 3.5\% to 8\%) with decreasing stellar mass. We obtained successful redshift fits for 75\% of massive galaxies, and demonstrate a similar 70-75\% successful redshift measurement rate in $8.5 < \log(M_{\star}/M_{\odot}) < 9.5$ galaxies, suggesting similar survey sensitivity in this low-mass range. We describe the redshift, mass, and color-magnitude distributions of the catalog galaxies, finding HALO7D galaxies representative of CANDELS galaxies up to \textit{i}-band magnitudes of 25. Supernovae and their remnants provide energetic feedback to the ambient interstellar medium (ISM), which is often distributed in multiple gas phases. Among them, warm molecular hydrogen (H$_2$) often dominates the cooling of the shocked molecular ISM, which has been observed with the H$_2$ emission lines at near-infrared wavelengths. Such studies, however, were either limited in narrow filter imaging or sparsely sampled mid-infrared spectroscopic observations with relatively poor angular resolutions. Here we present near-infrared ($H$- and $K$-band) spectroscopic mosaic observations towards the A, B, C, and G regions of the supernova remnant (SNR) IC 443, with the K-band Multi-Object Spectrograph (KMOS) onboard the Very Large Telescope (VLT). We detected 20 ro-vibrational transitions of H$_2$, one H line (Br$\gamma$), and two [Fe II] lines, which dominate broadband images at both $H$- and $K$-band. The spatial distribution of H$_2$ lines at all regions are clumpy on scales from $\sim 0.1$ pc down to $\sim 0.008$ pc. The fitted excitation temperature of H$_2$ is between 1500 K and 2500 K, indicating warm shocked gas in these regions. The multi-gas-phase comparison shows stratified shock structures in all regions, which explains the co-existence of multiple types of shocks in the same regions. Last, we verify the candidates of young stellar objects previously identified in these regions with our spectroscopic data, and find none of them are associated with young stars. This sets challenges to the previously proposed scenario of triggered star formation by SNR shocks in IC~443., Comment: 21 pages, 17 figures. Accepted by MNRAS

We present a new investigation of the intergalactic medium (IGM) near reionization using dark gaps in the Lyman-$\beta$ (Ly$\beta$) forest. With its lower optical depth, Ly$\beta$ offers a potentially more sensitive probe to any remaining neutral gas compared to commonly used Ly$\alpha$ line. We identify dark gaps in the Ly$\beta$ forest using spectra of 42 QSOs at $z_{\rm em}>5.5$, including new data from the XQR-30 VLT Large Programme. Approximately $40\%$ of these QSO spectra exhibit dark gaps longer than $10h^{-1}{\rm Mpc}$ at $z\simeq5.8$. By comparing the results to predictions from simulations, we find that the data are broadly consistent both with models where fluctuations in the Ly$\alpha$ forest are caused solely by ionizing ultraviolet background (UVB) fluctuations and with models that include large neutral hydrogen patches at $z, Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ. The elemental abundances in the broad-line regions of high-redshift quasars trace the chemical evolution in the nuclear regions of massive galaxies in the early universe. In this work, we study metallicity-sensitive broad emission-line flux ratios in rest-frame UV spectra of 25 high-redshift (5.8 < z < 7.5) quasars observed with the VLT/X-shooter and Gemini/GNIRS instruments, ranging over $\log(M_{\rm{BH}}/M_{\odot})= 8.4-9.8$ in black hole mass and $\log(L_{\rm{bol}}/\rm{erg\, s}^{-1})= 46.7-47.7$ in bolometric luminosity. We fit individual spectra and composites generated by binning across quasar properties: bolometric luminosity, black hole mass, and blueshift of the \civ\, line, finding no redshift evolution in the emission-line ratios by comparing our high-redshift quasars to lower-redshift (2.0 < z < 5.0) results presented in the literature. Using Cloudy-based locally optimally-emitting cloud photoionisation model relations between metallicity and emission-line flux ratios, we find the observable properties of the broad emission lines to be consistent with emission from gas clouds with metallicity that are at least 2-4 times solar. Our high-redshift measurements also confirm that the blueshift of the CIV emission line is correlated with its equivalent width, which influences line ratios normalised against CIV. The presence of excess scatter in the Ly-$\alpha$ forest at $z\sim 5.5$, together with the existence of sporadic extended opaque Gunn-Peterson troughs, has started to provide robust evidence for a late end of hydrogen reionisation. However, low data quality and systematic uncertainties complicate the use of Ly-$\alpha$ transmission as a precision probe of reionisation's end stages. In this paper, we assemble a sample of 67 quasar sightlines at $z>5.5$ with high signal-to-noise ratios of $>10$ per $\leq 15$ km s$^{-1}$ spectral pixel, relying largely on the new XQR-30 quasar sample. XQR-30 is a large program on VLT/X-Shooter which obtained deep (SNR $>20$ per pixel) spectra of 30 quasars at $z>5.7$. We carefully account for systematics in continuum reconstruction, instrumentation, and contamination by damped Ly-$\alpha$ systems. We present improved measurements of the mean Ly-$\alpha$ transmission over $4.93.5 \sigma$). Our results indicate that reionisation-related fluctuations, whether in the UVB, residual neutral hydrogen fraction, and/or IGM temperature, persist in the intergalactic medium until at least $z=5.3$ ($t=1.1$ Gyr after the Big Bang). The Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) is an integral field spectrograph on the Very Large Telescope Unit Telescope 4, capable of laser guide star assisted and tomographic adaptive optics using the GALACSI module. Its observing capabilities include a wide field (1 square arcmin), ground layer AO mode (WFM-AO) and a narrow field (7.5"x7.5"), laser tomography AO mode (NFM-AO). The latter has had several upgrades in the 4 years since commissioning, including an optimisation of the control matrices for the AO system and a new sub-electron noise detector for its infra-red low order wavefront sensor. We set out to quantify the NFM-AO system performance by analysing $\sim$230 spectrophotometric standard star observations taken over the last 3 years. To this end we expand upon previous work, designed to facilitate analysis of the WFM-AO system performance. We briefly describe the framework that will provide a user friendly, semi-automated way for system performance monitoring during science operations. We provide the results of our performance analysis, chiefly through the measured Strehl ratio and full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the core of the point spread function (PSF) using two PSF models, and correlations with atmospheric conditions. These results will feed into a range of applications, including providing a more accurate prediction of the system performance as implemented in the exposure time calculator, and the associated optimization of the scientific output for a given set of limiting atmospheric conditions., Comment: SPIE proceedings (2022), Observatory Operations: Strategies, Processes, and Systems IX

From near-infrared spectroscopic measurements of the MgII emission line doublet, we estimate the black hole (BH) mass of the quasar, SMSS J215728.21-360215.1, as being (3.4 +/- 0.6) x 10^10 M_sun and refine the redshift of the quasar to be z=4.692. SMSS J2157 is the most luminous known quasar, with a 3000A luminosity of (4.7 +/- 0.5) x 10^47 erg/s and an estimated bolometric luminosity of 1.6 x 10^48 erg/s, yet its Eddington ratio is only ~0.4. Thus, the high luminosity of this quasar is a consequence of its extremely large BH -- one of the most massive BHs at z > 4., 7 pages, 3 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We measure the Lyman continuum (LyC) escape fraction in 54 faint Lyman-alpha emitters (LAEs) at $z$ ≃ 3.1 in the GOODS-South field. With the average magnitude of R = 26.7 AB (MUV = −18.8 and L ≃ 0.1L*), these galaxies represent a population of compact young dwarf galaxies. Their properties are likely to resemble those in the galaxies responsible for reionizing the Universe at $z$ > 6. We do not detect LyC emission in any individual LAEs in the deep HST F336W images, which covers the rest-frame 820 Å. We do not detect the LyC emission of these LAEs in the stacked F336W images either. The 3σ upper limit of LyC escape fractions is $f_{\rm esc}\lt 14\!-\!32{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$. However, the high Ly α rest-frame equivalent width (EW), low stellar mass, and UV luminosity of these LAEs suggest that they should have $f_{\rm esc}\gt 50{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$. The low LyC escape fraction from this work and other stacking analyses suggests that the LyC-leaking galaxies with $f_{\rm esc}\gt 50{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ at $z$ = 2–3 do not follow the relation between fesc and UV luminosity and Ly α EW derived from typical galaxies at similar redshifts. Therefore, the UV luminosity and Ly α EW are not the best indicators for the LyC escape fraction.

The MAMMOTH-Grism slitless spectroscopic survey is a Hubble Space Telescope (HST) cycle-28 medium program, which is obtaining 45 orbits of WFC3/IR grism spectroscopy in the density peak regions of three massive galaxy protoclusters at $z=2-3$ discovered using the MAMMOTH technique. We introduce this survey by presenting the first measurement of the mass-metallicity relation (MZR) at high redshift in overdense environments via grism spectroscopy. From the completed MAMMOTH-Grism observations in the field of the BOSS1244 protocluster at $z=2.24\pm0.02$, We secure a sample of 36 protocluster member galaxies at $z\sim2.24$, showing strong nebular emission lines ([O III], H$\beta$ and [O II]) in their G141 spectra. Using the multi-wavelength broad-band deep imaging from HST and ground-based telescopes, we measure their stellar masses in the range of $[10^{9},10^{10.4}]M_\odot$, instantaneous star formation rates (SFR) from 10 to 240$M_\odot yr^{-1}$, and global gas-phase metallicities [$\frac{1}{3}$,1] of solar. Compared with similarly selected field galaxy sample at the same redshift, our galaxies show on average increased SFRs by $\sim$0.06dex and $\sim$0.18dex at $\sim$10$^{10.1}M_\odot$ and $\sim$10$^{9.8}M_\odot$, respectively. Using the stacked spectra of our sample galaxies, we derive the MZR in the BOSS1244 protocluster core as $12+\log({\rm O/H})=(0.136\pm0.018)\times\log(M_\ast/M_\odot)+(7.082\pm0.175)$, showing significantly shallower slope than that in the field. This shallow MZR slope is likely caused by the combined effects of efficient recycling of feedback-driven winds and cold-mode gas accretion in protocluster environments. The former effect helps low-mass galaxies residing in overdensities retain their metal production, whereas the latter effect dilutes the metal content of high-mass galaxies, making them more metal poor than their coeval field counterparts., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures, and 4 tables, accepted to ApJ

We search for ultra-luminous Quasi-Stellar Objects (QSOs) at high redshift using photometry from the SkyMapper Southern Survey Data Release 3 (DR3), in combination with 2MASS, VHS DR6, VIKING DR5, AllWISE, and CatWISE2020, as well as parallaxes and proper motions from Gaia DR2 and eDR3. We report 142 newly discovered Southern QSOs at $3.880$ per cent complete for $M_{145}, Comment: 25 pages. Two competing models, gravitational instability-driven transport and stellar feedback, have been proposed to interpret the high velocity dispersions observed in high-redshift galaxies. We study the major mechanisms to drive the turbulence in star-forming galaxies using a sample of galaxies from the xCOLD GASS survey, selected based on their star-formation rate (SFR) and gas fraction to be in the regime that can best distinguish between the proposed models. We perform Wide Field Spectrograph (WiFeS) integral field spectroscopic (IFS) observations to measure the intrinsic gas velocity dispersions, circular velocities and orbital periods in these galaxies. Comparing the relation between the SFR, velocity dispersion, and gas fraction with predictions of these two theoretical models, we find that our results are most consistent with a model that includes both transport and feedback as drivers of turbulence in the interstellar medium. By contrast, a model where stellar feedback alone drives turbulence under-predicts the observed velocity dispersion in our galaxies, and does not reproduce the observed trend with gas fraction. The bubble nebula surrounding NGC 1313 X-2 is believed to be powered by high velocity winds from the central ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) as a result of supercritical accretion. With the Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) observation of the nebula, we find enhanced [O iii] emission at locations spatially coincident with clusters of stars and the central X-ray source, suggesting that photoionization in addition to shock ionization plays an important role in powering the nebula. The X-ray luminosity of the ULX and the number of massive stars in the nebula region can account for the required ionizing luminosity derived with MAPPINGS V, which also confirms that pure shocks cannot explain the observed emission line ratios.

We examine the diagnostic power of rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) nebular emission lines, and compare them to more commonly used rest-frame optical emission lines, using the test case of a single star-forming knot of the bright lensed galaxy RCSGA 032727-132609 at redshift z~1.7. This galaxy has complete coverage of all the major rest-frame UV and optical emission lines from Magellan/MagE and Keck/NIRSPEC. Using the full suite of diagnostic lines, we infer the physical properties: nebular electron temperature (T_e), electron density (n_e), oxygen abundance (log(O/H)), ionisation parameter (log(q)) and interstellar medium (ISM) pressure (log(P/k)). We examine the effectiveness of the different UV, optical and joint UV-optical spectra in constraining the physical conditions. Using UV lines alone we can reliably estimate log(q), but the same is difficult for log(O/H). UV lines yield a higher (~1.5 dex) log(P/k) than the optical lines, as the former probes a further inner nebular region than the latter. For this comparison, we extend the existing Bayesian inference code IZI, adding to it the capability to infer ISM pressure simultaneously with metallicity and ionisation parameter. We study the metallicity calibrations in high-redshift galaxies using a sample of local analogs of high-redshift galaxies selected from the SDSS survey. Located in the same region on the BPT diagram as star-forming galaxies at z ∼ 2, these high-redshift analogs share the same ionized ISM conditions as high-redshift galaxies. We establish empirical metallicity calibrations between the direct gas-phase oxygen abundances and varieties of metallicity indicators in our local analogs using direct Te method. These new metallicity calibrations are the best means to measure the metallicity in high-redshift galaxies. There exist significant offsets between these new high-redshift metallicity calibrations and local calibrations. Such offsets are mainly driven by the evolution of the ionized ISM conditions from high-z to low-z.

X-ray emission from quasars has been detected up to redshift $z=7.5$, although only limited to a few objects at $z>6.5$. In this work, we present new Chandra observations of five $z>6.5$ quasars. By combining with archival Chandra observations of six additional $z>6.5$ quasars, we perform a systematic analysis on the X-ray properties of these earliest accreting supermassive black holes (SMBHs). We measure the black hole masses, bolometric luminosities ($L_{\rm bol}$), Eddington ratios ($\lambda_{\rm Edd}$), emission line properties, and infrared luminosities ($L_{\rm IR}$) of these quasars using infrared and sub-millimeter observations. Correlation analysis indicates that the X-ray bolometric correction (the factor that converts from X-ray luminosity to bolometric luminosity) decreases with increasing $L_{\rm bol}$, and that the UV/optical-to-X-ray ratio, $\alpha_{\rm ox}$, strongly correlates with $L_{\rm 2500}$, and moderately correlates with $\lambda_{\rm Edd}$ and blueshift of CIV emission lines. These correlations are consistent with those found in lower-$z$ quasars, indicating quasar accretion physics does not evolve with redshift. We also find that $L_{\rm IR}$ does not correlate with $L_{\rm 2-10 keV}$ in these luminous distant quasars, suggesting that the ratio of the SMBH growth rate and their host galaxy growth rate in these early luminous quasars are different from those of local galaxies. A joint spectral analysis of the X-ray detected $z>6.5$ quasars yields an average X-ray photon index of $ \Gamma=2.32^{+0.31}_{-0.30}$, steeper than that of low-$z$ quasars. By comparing it with the $\Gamma-\lambda_{\rm Edd}$ relation, we conclude that the steepening of $\Gamma$ for quasars at $z>6.5$ is mainly driven by their higher Eddington ratios., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

The gas supply from the cosmic web is the key to sustain star formation in galaxies. It remains to be explored how the cosmic large-scale structure (LSS) effects on galaxy evolution at given local environments. We examine galaxy specific star formation rate as a function of local density in a LSS at $z=0.735$ in the Extended Chandra Deep Field South. We report the results of near-infrared spectroscopic observations of 37 quasars in the redshift range $6.3< z\le7.64$, including 32 quasars at $z>6.5$, forming the largest quasar near-infrared spectral sample at this redshift. The spectra, taken with Keck, Gemini, VLT, and Magellan, allow investigations of central black hole mass and quasar rest-frame ultraviolet spectral properties. The black hole masses derived from the MgII emission lines are in the range $(0.3-3.6)\times10^{9}\,M_{\odot}$, which requires massive seed black holes with masses $\gtrsim10^{3-4}\,M_{\odot}$, assuming Eddington accretion since $z=30$. The Eddington ratio distribution peaks at $\lambda_{\rm Edd}\sim0.8$ and has a mean of 1.08, suggesting high accretion rates for these quasars. The CIV - MgII emission line velocity differences in our sample show an increase of CIV blueshift towards higher redshift, but the evolutionary trend observed from this sample is weaker than the previous results from smaller samples at similar redshift. The FeII/MgII flux ratios derived for these quasars up to $z=7.6$, compared with previous measurements at different redshifts, do not show any evidence of strong redshift evolution, suggesting metal-enriched environments in these quasars. Using this quasar sample, we create a quasar composite spectrum for $z>6.5$ quasars and find no significant redshift evolution of quasar broad emission lines and continuum slope, except for a blueshift of the CIV line. Our sample yields a strong broad absorption line quasar fraction of $\sim$24%, higher than the fractions in lower redshift quasar samples, although this could be affected by small sample statistics and selection effects., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. 26 pages, 9 figures

Optical turbulence affects significantly the quality of ground-based astronomical observations. An accurate and reliable forecast of optical turbulence can help to optimise the scheduling of the science observations and to improve both the quality of the data and the scientific productivity of the observatory. However, forecasts of the turbulence to a level of accuracy that is useful in the operations of large observatories are notoriously difficult to obtain. Several routes have been investigated, from detailed physical modelling of the atmosphere to empirical data-driven approaches. Here, we present an empirical approach exploiting spatial diversity and based on simultaneous measurements between two nearby sites, Cerro Paranal, host of the Very Large Telescope (VLT), and Cerro Armazones, future host of the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) in Chile. We study the correlation between the high-altitude turbulence as measured between those two sites. We report new measurements of the intergalactic medium (IGM) Ly$\alpha$ and Ly$\beta$ effective optical depth at $5.35.3$, $\tau\propto(1+z)^{8.6\pm1.0}$. We then estimate the observed Ly$\beta$ effective optical depth using Ly$\beta$ forests and convert them to Ly$\alpha$ optical depth for comparison, which provides additional constraints on the evolution of the IGM optical depth. The Ly$\beta$-based measurements are generally in agreement with the best-fit evolution obtained from Ly$\alpha$ forests. Using this new sample, we identify 389 Ly$\alpha$ and 50 Ly$\beta$ transmission spikes at $5.5, Comment: 34 pages, 14 figures. Accepted for publication in ApJ

For the extremely bright lensed galaxy SDSS J1723+3411 at z=1.3293 , we analyze spatially integrated MMT, Keck, and Hubble Space Telescope spectra that fully cover the rest-frame wavelength range of 1400 to 7200 Angstroms. We also analyze near-IR spectra from Gemini that cover H alpha for a portion of the lensed arc. We report fluxes for 42 detected emission lines, and upper limits for an additional 22. This galaxy has extreme emission line ratios and high equivalent widths that are characteristic of extreme emission-line galaxies. We compute strong emission line diagnostics from both the rest-frame optical and rest-frame ultraviolet (UV), to constrain physical conditions and test the spectral diagnostics themselves. We tightly determine the nebular physical conditions using the most reliable diagnostics, and then compare to results from other diagnostics. We find disappointing performance from the UV--only diagnostics: they either are unable to measure the metallicity or dramatically under-estimate it; they over-estimate the pressure; and the UV diagnostic of ionization parameter has a strong metallicity dependence in this regime. Based on these results, we suggest that upcoming James Webb Space Telescope spectroscopic surveys of galaxies in the reionization epoch should invest the additional integration time to capture the optical [O II] and [O III] emission lines, and not rely solely on the rest-frame UV emission lines. We make available the spectra; they represent one of the highest-quality emission line spectral atlases of star-forming galaxy available beyond the local universe, and will aid planning observations with JWST., Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present a spectroscopic survey of Ly$\alpha$ emitters (LAEs) at $z\approx5.7$ using the multi-object spectrograph M2FS on the Magellan Clay telescope. This is part of a high-redshift galaxy survey carried out in several well-studied deep fields. These fields have deep images in multiple UV/optical bands, including a narrow NB816 band that has allowed an efficient selection of LAE candidates at $z\approx5.7$. Our sample consists of 260 LAEs and covers a total effective area of more than two square degrees on the sky. This is so far the largest (spectroscopically confirmed) sample of LAEs at this redshift. We use the secure redshifts and narrowband photometry to measure Ly$\alpha$ luminosities. We find that these LAEs span a Ly$\alpha$ luminosity range of $\sim 2\times10^{42} - 5\times10^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$, and include some of the most luminous galaxies known at $z \ge 5.7$ in terms of Ly$\alpha$ luminosity. Most of them have rest-frame equivalent widths between 20 and 300 \r{A}, and more luminous Ly$\alpha$ emission lines tend to have broader line widths. We detect a clear offset of $\sim20$ \r{A} between the observed Ly$\alpha$ wavelength distribution and the NB816 filter transmission curve, which can be explained by the intergalactic medium absorption of continua blueward of Ly$\alpha$ in the high-redshift spectra. We present a new investigation of the intergalactic medium (IGM) near the end of reionization using “dark gaps” in the Lyα forest. Using spectra of 55 QSOs at z em > 5.5, including new data from the XQR-30 VLT Large Programme, we identify gaps in the Lyα forest where the transmission averaged over 1 comoving h −1 Mpc bins falls below 5%. Nine ultralong (L > 80 h −1 Mpc) dark gaps are identified at z < 6. In addition, we quantify the fraction of QSO spectra exhibiting gaps longer than 30 h −1 Mpc, F 30, as a function of redshift. We measure F 30 ≃ 0.9, 0.6, and 0.15 at z = 6.0, 5.8, and 5.6, respectively, with the last of these long dark gaps persisting down to z ≃5.3. Comparing our results with predictions from hydrodynamical simulations, we find that the data are consistent with models wherein reionization extends significantly below redshift six. Models wherein the IGM is essentially fully reionized that retain large-scale fluctuations in the ionizing UV background at z ≲6 are also potentially consistent with the data. Overall, our results suggest that signatures of reionization in the form of islands of neutral hydrogen and/or large-scale fluctuations in the ionizing background remain present in the IGM until at least z ≃ 5.3.

We report the discovery of a luminous quasar, J1007+2115 at $z=7.515$ ("P\={o}niu\={a}'ena"), from our wide-field reionization-era quasar survey. J1007+2115 is the second quasar now known at $z>7.5$, deep into the reionization epoch. The quasar is powered by a $(1.5\pm0.2)\times10^9$ $M_{\odot}$ supermassive black hole (SMBH), based on its broad MgII emission-line profile from Gemini and Keck near-IR spectroscopy. The SMBH in J1007+2115 is twice as massive as that in quasar J1342+0928 at $z=7.54$, the current quasar redshift record holder. The existence of such a massive SMBH just 700 million years after the Big Bang significantly challenges models of the earliest SMBH growth. Model assumptions of Eddington-limited accretion and a radiative efficiency of 0.1 require a seed black hole of $\gtrsim 10^{4}$ $M_{\odot}$ at $z=30$. This requirement suggests either a massive black hole seed as a result of direct collapse or earlier periods of rapid black hole growth with hyper-Eddington accretion and/or a low radiative efficiency. We measure the damping wing signature imprinted by neutral hydrogen absorption in the intergalactic medium (IGM) on J1007+2115's Ly$\alpha$ line profile, and find that it is weaker than that of J1342+0928 and two other $z\gtrsim7$ quasars. We estimate an IGM volume-averaged neutral fraction $\langle x\rm_{HI}\rangle=0.39^{+0.22}_{-0.13}$. This range of values suggests a patchy reionization history toward different IGM sightlines. We detect the 158 $\mu$m [C II] emission line in J1007+2115 with ALMA; this line centroid yields a systemic redshift of $z=7.5149\pm0.0004$ and indicates a star formation rate of $\sim210$ $M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ in its host galaxy., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, ApJL in press

Luminous $z\ge7$ quasars provide direct probes of the evolution of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) and the intergalactic medium (IGM) during the epoch of reionization (EoR). The Ly$\alpha$ damping wing absorption imprinted by neutral hydrogen in the IGM can be detected in a single EoR quasar spectrum, allowing the measurement of the IGM neutral fraction towards that line of sight. However, damping wing features have only been detected in two $z>7$ quasars in previous studies. In this paper, we present new high quality optical and near-infrared spectroscopy of the $z=7.00$ quasar DES J025216.64--050331.8 obtained with Keck/NIRES and Gemini/GMOS. By using the MgII single-epoch virial method, we find that it hosts a $\rm (1.39\pm0.16) \times10^{9} ~M_\odot$ SMBH accreting at an Eddington ratio of $\lambda_{\rm Edd}=0.7\pm0.1$, consistent with the values seen in other luminous $z\sim 7$ quasars. Furthermore, the Ly$\alpha$ region of the spectrum exhibits a strong damping wing absorption feature. The lack of associated metal absorption in the quasar spectrum indicates that this absorption is imprinted by a neutral IGM. Using a state-of-the-art model developed by Davies et al., we measure a volume-averaged neutral hydrogen fraction at $z=7$ of $\langle x_{\rm HI} \rangle = 0.70^{+0.20}_{-0.23} (^{+0.28}_{-0.48})$ within 68% (95%) confidence intervals when marginalizing over quasar lifetimes of $10^3\le t_{\rm Q}\le10^8$ yr. Using a high luminosity ($L_{\rm bol} \sim 10^{47.5} - 10^{48.3}$ erg s$^{-1}$), high redshift ($3.2 < z < 3.8$) quasar sample of 19 quasars with optical and near-infrared spectroscopy, we investigate the reliability of the CIV-based black hole mass estimates ($M_{\rm BH}$). The median logarithm of the CIV- and H$��$-based $M_{\rm BH}$ ratios is 0.110 dex with the scatter of 0.647 dex. The CIV-to-H$��$ BH mass differences are significantly correlated with the CIV FWHMs, blueshifts and asymmetries. Corrections of the CIV FWHM using the blueshift and asymmetry reduce the scatter of the mass differences by $\sim$ 0.04-0.2 dex. Quasars in our sample accrete at the Eddington ratio $R_{\rm EDD}>0.3$ and cover a considerable range of blueshifts, with 18/19 of the quasars showing CIV blueshifts (with the median value of 1126 km s$^{-1}$) and 14/19 of the quasars showing CIV blueshifts larger than 500 km s$^{-1}$. It suggests that not all quasars with high Eddington ratios show large blueshifts. The Baldwin effect between the CIV rest-frame equivalent width (REW) and the continuum luminosity at 1350 $\overset{\lower.5em\circ}{\mathrm{A}}$ is not seen, likely due to the limited luminosity range of our sample. We find a lack of flux in the red wing of the composite spectrum with larger CIV blueshift, and detect a higher ratio of [OIII] quasars with REW$_{\rm [OIII]}>5$ $\overset{\lower.5em\circ}{\mathrm{A}}$ in the subsample with lower CIV blueshift. It is more likely that they are caused by the combination of the Eddington ratio and the orientation effect., 17 pages, 12 figures with additional 6 pages and 2 figures in the appendix.
