Clays are a class of porous materials; their surfaces are naturally covered by moisture. Weak thermal treatment may be considered practical to remove the water molecules, changing the surface properties and making the micro- and/or mesoporosities accessible to interact with other molecules. Herein, a modulated thermogravimetric analysis (MTGA) study of the moisture behavior on the structures of five, both fibrous and laminar, clay minerals is reported. The effect of the thermal treatment at 150 °C, which provokes the release of weakly adsorbed water molecules, was also investigated. The activation energies for the removal of the adsorbed water (Ea) were calculated, and they were found to be higher, namely, from 160 to 190 kJ mol -1 , for fibrous clay minerals compared to lamellar structures, ranging in this latter case from 80 to 100 kJ mol -1 . The thermal treatment enhances the rehydration in Na-montmorillonite, stevensite, and sepiolite structures with a decrease in the energy required to remove it, while Ea increases significantly in palygorskite (from 164 to 273 kJ mol -1 ). As a proof of concept, the MTGA results are statistically correlated, together with a full characterization of the physico-chemical properties of the five clay minerals, with the adsorption of two molecules, i.e., aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) and β-carotene. Herein, the amount of adsorbed molecules ranges from 12 to 97% for the former and from 22 to 35% for the latter, depending on the particular clay. The Ea was correlated with AFB1 adsorption with a Spearman score of -0.9. When the adsorbed water is forcibly removed, e.g., under vacuum conditions and high temperatures, the structure becomes the most important, decreasing the Spearman score between β-carotene and Ea to -0.6.

The development of food and feed additives involves the design of materials with specific properties that enable the desired function while minimizing the adverse effects related with their interference with the concurrent complex biochemistry of the living organisms. Often, the development process is heavily dependent on costly and time-consuming in vitro and in vivo experiments. Herein, we present an approach to design clay-based composite materials for mycotoxin removal from animal feed. The approach can accommodate various material compositions and different toxin molecules. With application of machine learning trained on in vitro results of mycotoxin adsorption-desorption in the gastrointestinal tract, we have searched the space of possible composite material compositions to identify formulations with high removal capacity and gaining insights into their mode of action. An in vivo toxicokinetic study, based on the detection of biomarkers for mycotoxin-exposure in broilers, validated our findings by observing a significant reduction in systemic exposure to the challenging to be removed mycotoxin, i.e., deoxynivalenol (DON), when the optimal detoxifier is administrated to the animals. Sepiolite and palygorskite fibrous clay minerals are 1D silicates featuring unique textural and structural characteristics useful in diverse applications, and in particular as rheological additives. Here we report on the ability of grinded sepiolite to generate highly viscous and stable hydrogels by sonomechanical irradiation (ultrasounds). Adequate drying of such hydrogels leads to low-density xerogels that show extensive fiber disaggregation compared to the starting sepiolite-whose fibers are agglomerated as bundles. Upon re-dispersion in water under high-speed shear, these xerogels show comparable rheological properties to commercially available defibrillated sepiolite products, resulting in high viscosity hydrogels that minimize syneresis. These colloidal systems are thus very interesting as they can be used to stabilize many diverse compounds as well as nano-/micro-particles, leading to the production of a large variety of composites and nano/micro-architectured solids. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major health and socioeconomic problem affecting the world. This condition results from the application of external physical force to the brain which leads to transient or permanent structural and functional impairments. TBI has been shown to be a risk factor for neurodegeneration which can lead to Parkinson's disease (PD) for example. In this study, we wanted to explore the development of PD-related pathology in the context of an experimental model of TBI and the potential ability of Coriolus versicolor and Hericium erinaceus to prevent neurodegenerative processes. Traumatic brain injury was induced in mice by controlled cortical impact. Behavioral tests were performed at various times: the animals were sacrificed 30 days after the impact and the brain was processed for Western blot and immunohistochemical analyzes. After the head injury, a significant decrease in the expression of tyrosine hydroxylase and the dopamine transporter in the substantia nigra was observed, as well as significant behavioral alterations that were instead restored following daily oral treatment with Hericium erinaceus and Coriolus versicolor . Furthermore, a strong increase in neuroinflammation and oxidative stress emerged in the vehicle groups. Treatment with Hericium erinaceus and Coriolus versicolor was able to prevent both the neuroinflammatory and oxidative processes typical of PD. This study suggests that PD-related molecular events may be triggered on TBI and that nutritional fungi such as Hericium erinaceus and Coriolus versicolor may be important in redox stress response mechanisms and neuroprotection, preventing the progression of neurodegenerative diseases such as PD.

Natural porous materials such as nanoporous clays are used as green and low-cost adsorbents and catalysts. The key factors determining their performance in these applications are the pore morphology and surface activity, which are typically represented by properties such as specific surface area, pore volume, micropore content and pH. The latter may be modified and tuned to specific applications through material processing and/or chemical treatment. Characterization of the material, raw or processed, is typically performed experimentally, which can become costly especially in the context of tuning of the properties towards specific application requirements and needing numerous experiments. In this work, we present an application of tree-based machine learning methods trained on experimental datasets to accelerate the characterization of natural porous materials. The resulting models allow reliable prediction of the outcomes of experimental characterization of processed materials ( R 2 from 0.78 to 0.99) as well as identification of key factors contributing to those properties through feature importance analysis. Furthermore, the high throughput of the models enables exploration of processing parameter-property correlations and multiobjective optimization of prototype materials towards specific applications. We have applied these methodologies to pinpoint and rationalize optimal processing conditions for clays exploitable in acid catalysis. One of such identified materials was synthesized and tested revealing appreciable acid character improvement with respect to the pristine material. Biohybrid materials were prepared by co-assembling the three following components: nanotubular halloysite, microfibrous sepiolite, and cellulose nanofibers dispersed in water, in order to exploit the most salient features of each individual component and to render homogeneous, flexible, yet strong films. Indeed, the incorporation of halloysite improves the mechanical performance of the resulting hybrid nanopapers and the assembly of the three components modifies the surface features concerning wetting properties compared to pristine materials, so that the main characteristics of the resulting materials become tunable with regard to certain properties. Owing to their hierarchical porosity together with their diverse surface characteristics, these hybrids can be used in diverse biomedical/pharmaceutical applications. Herein, for instance, loading with two model drugs, salicylic acid and ibuprofen, allows controlled and sustained release as deduced from antimicrobial assays, opening a versatile path for developing other related organic-inorganic materials of potential interest in diverse application fields.

Based on the unique ability of defibrillated sepiolite (SEP) to form stable and homogeneous colloidal dispersions of diverse types of nanoparticles in aqueous media under ultrasonication, multicomponent conductive nanoarchitectured materials integrating halloysite nanotubes (HNTs), graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) and chitosan (CHI) have been developed. The resulting nanohybrid suspensions could be easily formed into films or foams, where each individual component plays a critical role in the biocomposite: HNTs act as nanocontainers for bioactive species, GNPs provide electrical conductivity (enhanced by doping with MWCNTs) and, the CHI polymer matrix introduces mechanical and membrane properties that are of key significance for the development of electrochemical devices. The resulting characteristics allow for a possible application of these active elements as integrated multicomponent materials for advanced electrochemical devices such as biosensors and enzymatic biofuel cells. This strategy can be regarded as an "a la carte" menu, where the selection of the nanocomponents exhibiting different properties will determine a functional set of predetermined utility with SEP maintaining stable colloidal dispersions of different nanoparticles and polymers in water.

The health benefits of nuts, mainly in relation to the improvement of dysmetabolic conditions such as obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus and the related cardiovascular diseases, have been widely demonstrated. Compared to other nuts, pistachios have a lower fat and caloric content, and contain the highest levels of unsaturated fatty acids, potassium, γ-tocopherol, phytosterols and xanthophyll carotenoids, all substances that are well known for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory actions. This variety of nutrients contributes to the growing body of evidence that the consumption of pistachios improves health, leading to a greater potential of healthy antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity, glycemic control, and endothelial function. The present review examines the nutrients and phytochemicals present in pistachios as well as the potential health benefits of including pistachios in a diet.

A total of 205 bluefin and yellowfin tuna samples were examined for mercury detection in order to verify possible differences and have a detailed risk assessment of the two tuna species. The results showed significant higher mercury concentration in muscle tissue of bluefin tuna respect yellowfin tuna (p < 0.001) with mean concentration of 0.84 mg/kg and maximum value of 1.94 mg/kg. These differences can be due the different biological and ecological aspects of the two tuna species and to different oceanographic aspects between Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean sea. The results obtained in this study suggest an advisable containment of the sources of pollution and further studies on the closed-loop farming of bluefin tuna, in order to ensure the product safety.

Background: In this open prospective study the correlation between bleeding patterns and endometrial histology has been evaluated in 101 postmenopausal women after 2 years of continuous sequential hormone replacement therapy (HRT)., Methods: All patients received continuous transdermal 17-b-estradiol supplementation, 0.05 mg/daily, with cyclic progestogen for 12 days every month. The progestogen was: dydrogesterone 10 mg/daily (56 cases); nomegestrol 5 mg/daily (15 cases); MAP 10 mg/daily (15 cases); norethisterone 0.25 mg/daily (15 cases). The changes in the characteristics of bleeding pattern and endometrial biopsy were performed in 90 of 101 patients, at the 10-12th of progestogen therapy., Results: The endometrial pattern was secretory in 60 cases, proliferative in 5 and atrophic in 22. In 3 cases the endometrial histology showed a simple hyperplasia. The bleeding generally starts 2 days after the end of progestogen therapy (13th +/- 2.9 day), with a mean duration of 4 days (4 +/- 2.8); in 21 patients (~20%) the bleeding is reduced. The endometrial histological characteristics haven't any influence on the bleeding pattern., Conclusions: In this study there was a low incidence of simple hyperplasia (3%), but the characteristics of bleeding don't permit to suspect this hyperplasia.

In order to assess the effects and acceptability of transdermal estradiol on the prevention of the loss of bone mass, the Authors administered transdermal estradiol (ETTS 50 mcgr/day) for 3 weeks and, cyclically, medroxyprogesterone 10/mg/day from day 10 to day 21 of each cycle for 12 months, to 20 operated patients for bilateral ovariectomy. Primary markers of the bone turnover (hydroxyproline urinary, osteocalcin, PTH) were estimated before therapy and after 3, 6, 9, 12 months. The BMD was evaluated before therapy and after 6 and 12 months. Our study clearly shows that the transdermal administration of estradiol prevents the postmenopausal bone loss, also in postmenopausal women at higher risk of developing osteoporosis as those evaluated in our study.

The most important factor responsible for osteoporosis postmenopausal is the loss of the oestrogen. For this reason we have estimated the modifications of the bone turnover in the operated patients for bilateral ovariectomy in fertile age by study of the BMD (bone mineral density) and of the various biohumoral parameters that are involved in the process of bone remodelling urinary hydroxyproline, osteocalcin). Our research consists of two phases. I phase: we have conducted a transverse study on a group of 43 patients subdivided in 3 subgroups on the basis of the years elapsed since they were operated. II phase: it is a longitudinal study. We have observed 6 women. We have estimated the turnover before the operation (T0) at (T1), at 30 (T2), at 90 (T3) and at 180 (T4) days from the operation. The results show that the sudden and rapid decrease of the oestrogenic rate determines a sudden increase of the bone turnover. The activity of the osteoblastic line is faster, the activity of osteoblastic line is slower. The beginning of the loss of the bone mass is about the 7% already at six months (longitudinal study), the loss of bone mass reaches the maximum within the first 2-3 years (about 16%) from the operation (transverse study).

The Authors refer on the validity of echoscopic examination and hCG, progesterone and 17-beta estradiol values in the prognosis of threatened abortion during the first trimester of pregnancy in 62 patients. The echoscopic examination allowed a prognosis to be made in accordance with the clinical evolution of threatened abortion in 90% of the cases; the plasma levels of hCG and progesterone in 87% of the cases; 17-beta estradiol in 83% of the cases. The Authors conclude that the simultaneous assay of hCG, progesterone and 17-beta estradiol plasma levels does not improve the prognostic validity of echoscopy but, in some cases, can provide essential details on the etiology of threatened abortion itself.

The authors submitted 24 patients affected by polycystic ovary syndrome to an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) and determined glucose, insulin and C Peptide levels. Patients were divided in four groups according to the degree of obesity and androgenic blood levels. Eight non hirsute women with normal ovulatory function, matched for height and weight, served as controls. The authors pointed out that insulin levels were greater in the obese and hyperandrogenic PCO women than in only the obese PCO women or only the hyperandrogenic PCO women. Obese patients with PCO had higher insulin levels than obese control group. Patients with PCO nonobese and nonhyperandrogenic had higher insulin levels than nonobese control group. Insulin levels did not differ in obese PCO and hyperandrogenic PCO women. These findings suggest that at least a component of insulin resistance which is found in PCO women is independent from body weight.

The Authors, for testing the opiate receptors role in human PRL secretion, performed the following experiment: they administered: 1) to 24 women during day 2 and 4 of the puerperium, divided into 3 groups of 8 subjects, respectively 5, 10, 20 mg naloxone. 2) to 16 women during day 3 and 4 of the puerperium, divided into 2 groups of 8 subjects, during mechanical breast stimulation with a breast pump (10 min for each breast), respectively 5, 10 mg naloxone. 3) to 12 women in physiological menopause, in basal condition and after administration of oestradiol 17-n-valerate 4 mg/die over ten days, 10 mg naloxone. 4) to 7 women in physiological menopause, in basal condition and after administration of ethinyl-oestradiol 50 micrograms/die over ten days, 5 mg morphine hydrochloride. They observed that naloxone is not able to reduce either basal PRL secretion in menopausal women, or puerperal hyperprolactinemia, or PRL release induced by mechanical breast stimulation. On the contrary, an exogenous opiate administration produced a PRL significant increase (P less than 0.01) and such increase has been affected in a statistically significant way (P less than 0.05) by the oestrogen rate.
