Sorghum is an important food and feed crop in the dry lowland areas of Ethiopia. Farmers grow both early-sown long-duration landraces and late-sown short-duration improved varieties. Because timing and intensity of drought stress can vary in space and time, an understanding of major traits (G), environments (E), management (M), and their interactions (G×E×M) is needed to optimize grain and forage yield given the limited available resources. Crop simulation modeling can provide insights into these complex G×E×M interactions and be used to identify possible avenues for adaptation to prevalent drought patterns in Ethiopia. In a previous study predictive phenology models were developed for a range of Ethiopian germplasm. In this study, the aims were to (1) further parameterize and validate the APSIM-sorghum model for crop growth and yield of Ethiopian germplasm, and (2) quantify by simulation the productivity-risk trade-offs associated with early vs late sowing strategies in the dry lowlands of Ethiopia. Field experiments involving Ethiopian germplasm with contrasting phenology and height were conducted under well-watered (Melkassa) and water-limited (Miesso) conditions and crop development, growth and yield measured. Soil characterization and weather records at the experimental sites, combined with model parameterization, enabled testing of the APSIM-sorghum model, which showed good correspondence between simulated and observed data. The simulated productivity for the Ethiopian dry lowlands environments showed trade-offs between biomass and grain yield for early and late sowing strategies. The late sowing strategy tended to produce less biomass except in poor seasons, whereas it tended to produce greater grain yield except in very good seasons. This study exemplified the systems approach to identifying traits and management options needed to quantify the production-risk trade-offs associated with crop adaptation in the Ethiopian dry lowlands and further exemplifies the general robustness of the sorghum model in APSIM for this task. Background: Biofortification of wheat with zinc (Zn) through breeding and agronomy can reduce Zn deficiencies and improve human health. “High-Zn” wheat varieties have been released in India and Pakistan, where wheat is consumed widely as a dietary staple. The aim of this study was to quantify the potential contribution of a “high-Zn” wheat variety (Triticum aestivum L. var. Zincol-2016) and Zn fertilizers to improving dietary Zn supply under field conditions in Pakistan.Methods: Grain Zn concentration of Zincol-2016 and local reference varieties were determined at three sites of contrasting soil Zn status: Faisalabad (Punjab Province; diethylenetriamine pentaacetate- (DTPA-)extractable Zn, 1.31 mg kg−1 soil; gross plot size 13.3 m2; n = 4; reference var. Faisalabad-2008), Islamabad (Capital Territory; 0.48 mg kg−1; 4.6 m2; n = 5; reference var. NARC-2011), and Pir Sabak (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, KPK, Province; 0.12 mg kg−1 soil; 9.1 m2; n = 4; reference vars. Pirsabak-2015, Wadhan-2017). Eight Zn fertilizer treatment levels were tested using a randomized complete block design: control; soil (5 or 10 kg ha−1 ZnSO4.H2O; 33% Zn applied at sowing); foliar (0.79 or 1.58 kg of ZnSO4.H2O ha−1 applied as a 250 L ha−1 drench at crop booting stage); three soil × foliar combinations.Results: At the Faisalabad site, the grain Zn concentration of Zincol-2016 was greater than Faisalabad-2008, with no yield penalty. Zincol-2016 did not have larger grain Zn concentrations than reference varieties used at Islamabad or Pir Sabak sites, which both had a lower soil Zn status than the Faisalabad site. Foliar Zn fertilization increased grain Zn concentration of all varieties at all sites. There were no significant effects of soil Zn fertilizers, or variety·fertilizer interactions, on grain Zn concentration or yield.Conclusions: Environment and management affect the performance of “high-Zn” wheat varieties, and these factors needs to be evaluated at scale to assess the potential nutritional impact of Zn biofortified crops. Designing studies to detect realistic effect sizes for new varieties and crop management strategies is therefore an important consideration. The current study indicated that nine replicate plots would be needed to achieve 80% power to detect a 25% increase in grain Zn concentration.

In-crop nitrogen (N) application is used widely in rainfed winter wheat production to reduce lodging risk; however, uncertainty exists as to its ability to reduce lodging risk in subtropical irrigated wheat production without simultaneously reducing yield potential. The objective of this study was therefore to determine whether in-crop N application reduces lodging risk without reducing yield of irrigated spring wheat in a subtropical environment. Irrigated small-plot experiments were conducted to compare the effect of alternative N timing on lodging and yield in two cultivars. Variable N regimes were imposed during the vegetative growth phase, after which additional N was applied to ensure that total season N application was uniform across N-timing treatments. Treatments with low N at sowing had significantly less lodging and were the highest yielding, exhibiting yield increases of up to 0.8 t ha–1 compared to treatments with high N at sowing. Increased leaf area index, biomass and tiller count at the end of the vegetative growth phase were correlated with increased lodging in both cultivars, although the strength of the correlation varied with cultivar and season. We conclude that canopy-management techniques can be used to simultaneously increase yield and decrease lodging in irrigated spring wheat in the subtropics, but require different implementation from techniques used in temperate regions of Australia. Increasing the capacity of plants to assimilate carbon (source), or to tap into the internal carbon reservoir (sink), has the potential of realizing high and stable yield under a more variable climate. A three-year field experiment was conducted to explore the source-sink relationships of two maize (Zea mays L.) cultivars in response to various water and fertilizer inputs, and evaluate the yield sustainability in northwest China. There were two fertilization rates (unfertilized, F0; fertilized, F1), two irrigation strategies (rainfed, RF; supplemental drip irrigation, DI) and two maize cultivars (ZD958 and QL14). The results showed that the newly released maize cultivar (QL14) had higher leaf chlorophyll content at the silking and grain-filling stages than the old one (ZD958); meanwhile, QL14 had higher root dry matter at maturity than ZD958 under DIF1. The aboveground and root dry matter increased with the amount of water and fertilizer, while the root-shoot ratio decreased. Cultivar significantly affected the vegetative organ dry matter partitioning, especially under severe drought at the silking stage. QL14 had stronger root system and larger leaf dry matter than ZD958, and was more drought-resistant under serious water-stressed conditions. Dry matter translocation (DMT) was crucial for grain yield formation under limited nutrients conditions, and ~55% of total dry matter at maturity was accumulated at the grain-filling stage under adequate water and fertilizer conditions. DIF1 had higher sustainable yield index (SYI) than RFF1. There was no significant difference in grain yield between the two maize cultivars under DIF1, but the average SYI of QL14 (0.94) was greater than that of ZD958 (0.89). The present study indicates that the newly released maize cultivar (QL14) with stronger root system and stay-green characteristics is beneficial for increasing drought resistance and keeping yield stable in the semi-humid and drought-prone region of northwest China. ● Source-sink relationship and yield stability of two maize cultivars were explored. ● Dry matter increased with water and fertilizer supply, while root-shoot ratio decreased. ● Dry matter translocation of maize was crucial for yield formation. ● Stronger root and stay-green of maize cultivar kept yield stability. • We used long-term wheat variety performance trials to evaluate G, E, and M effects. • Sub-region accounted for 46 % of the yield variability across all environments. • Management practices accounted for 44–77 % of yield variability within sub-regions. • Yield variability of 1–8 % was due to genotype within sub-regions. • Management practices and genotype traits improving yield varied by sub-region. The complex and interactive effects of genotype (G), environment (E), and management (M) can be a barrier to the development of sound agronomic recommendations. We hypothesize that long-term variety performance trials (VPT) can be used to understand these effects and improve regional recommendations. Our objective was to explore long-term VPT data to improve management and variety-selection recommendations using winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) in the U.S. central Great Plains as a case-study. Data of grain yield, variety, and trial management were collected from 748 wheat VPT conducted in the states of Colorado, Kansas, and Oklahoma over nineteen harvest years (2000–2018) and 92 locations, resulting in 97,996 yield observations. Using 30-yr cumulative annual precipitation and growing degrees days, we partitioned the study region into 11 contiguous sub-regions, which we refer to as growing adaptation regions (GAR). We used variance component analysis, gradient boosted trees, and conditional inference trees to explore the management and variety trait effects within each GAR. For the variety trait analysis, the VPT dataset was reduced to account for varieties for which 17 agronomic traits and 11 disease/insect reaction ratings were available (65,264 yield observations). GAR accounted for 46 % of the total variation in grain yield, M for 32 %, residuals (including interactions) for 13 %, year for 7 %, and G for 2 %. Conditional inference trees identified interactions among management practices and their effects on yield within each GAR. For instance, water regime was the most important practice influencing wheat yield in the semi-arid western portion of the study region, followed by sowing date and fungicide. In dryland trials, there was typically an interaction between fungicide, sowing date, and tillage system, depending on GAR. Other management practices (e.g. dual-purpose management, crop rotation, and tillage practice) also significantly affected yield, depending on GAR. The main variety trait associated with increased yields depended on region and management combination. For instance, drought tolerance was the most important trait in dryland trials while stripe rust tolerance was more relevant in irrigated trials in the semi-arid region. In this research, we demonstrated an approach that uses widely available long-term VPT data to improve management and variety selection recommendations and can be used in other regions and crops for which long-term VPT data are available.
