RESUMEN: Se estudió la relación entre el crecimiento de un rodal de Abies pinsapo de 43 años de edad cercano a la ciudad de Valdivia, Chile, y la variabilidad del clima local. Los objetivos fueron identificar los factores y periodos climáticos que regulan su crecimiento radial, comparando paralelamente sus tasas de crecimiento con dos rodales naturales de la especie en España, país que junto a Marruecos alberga sus últimas poblaciones. Las tasas de crecimiento en Valdivia fueron similares o superiores a los sitios de su hábitat natural, favorecidas en Chile por veranos cálidos y poco lluviosos, así como por abundantes precipitaciones invernales. A nivel de madera temprana y tardía, la primera se relacionó con las condiciones de los veranos previos, demostrando su relación con sustancias de reserva, mientras que la madera tardía, presentó una señal climática dominada por características de la estación de crecimiento corriente. Estos resultados indican que el clima templado-lluvioso de la región de Los Ríos, menos extremo que el clima de montaña de su hábitat natural, favorece el crecimiento de la especie constituyendo un hábitat alternativo para su conservación. Aquí la temperatura de verano favorece su crecimiento, a diferencia de su hábitat natural, donde el déficit hídrico es el factor que controla su crecimiento. Esta información puede ser relevante para la conservación ex-situ de una de las coníferas más amenazadas por el cambio climático y la presión humana en el sur de la península ibérica.

The relationship between the growth of 43-year old specimens of an Abies pinsapo Boiss stand located in the city of Valdivia (Chile) and the climatic variability of this site was studied. The objectives were to define the climatic response function and identify the climatic variables and periods that regulate radial growth rates and to compare the annual radial growth with those characterizing two natural stands of the same species growing in Spain provinces, which, together with Morocco, shelters its last populations. Growth rates in Valdivia, Chile, were similar to or even higher than those in their natural habitat, showing a predilection for warm summers with little rain, as well as for abundant winter precipitation. In relation to the early wood (EW) and late wood (LW) series, the first one was related with prevalent dominant climatic conditions of the previous summer. This may be related to stored food. Late wood showed a climatic signal controlled by dominant conditions of the current growing season. These results indicate that the temperate-rainy climate in Los Ríos Region (Chile), milder than the mountain climate in its original habitat, favors the growth of this species and therefore constitutes an alternative habitat for its conservation. Here, summer temperatures favor its growth, differing from its natural habitat, where soil-water availability is the major factor controlling its growth. Dendrochronology is useful to determine plant longevity, to provide insights into the structure and dynamics of plant populations and to study the relationships between growth and environmental determinants. The dendrochronology of endangered shrubs is unexplored, although their use represents an opportunity to produce better conservation guidelines. We collected for this study 63 samples from already dead specimens of Vella pseudocytisus subsp. paui (Brassicaceae), an endangered Spanish endemism from three localities. We analyzed the relationship between ring data and plant size to determine the accuracy of using size as a proxy for plant age. We also explored the relationships between ring data and environmental variables to detect growth determinants. This shrub showed a high longevity as older individuals presented nearly 50 growth rings. The relationship between age and size is weak although it could be established based on the logarithmic function of plant biovolume. Significant relationships were found between rainfall and ring widths, showing that water limited annual growth. Finally, age structure characterized differences among populations, highlighting the effects of disturbance and land use. These results provided new opportunities for management within the ongoing recovery plan for the species.La dendrocronología es útil para determinar la longevidad de la planta, proporcionar información sobre la estructura y dinámica de las poblaciones vegetales y estudiar las relaciones entre el crecimiento y las variables ambientales. Hasta ahora no se había hecho uso de la dendrocronología en arbustos en peligro de extinción, aunque su empleo puede mejorar las directrices de conservación. En este estudio se han recolectado 63 especímenes ya muertos de tres localidades de Vella pseudocytisus subsp. paui (Brassicaceae), un endemismo español en peligro de extinción. Se han analizado las relaciones entre los grosores del anillo de crecimiento y el tamaño de la planta para determinar si es posible utilizar el tamaño como estimador de la edad, y también entre la correlación entre el grosor de los anillos y las variables ambientales para detectar factores determinantes del crecimiento. Este arbusto mostró una elevada longevidad, con un máximo próximo a los 50 años. La relación entre la edad y el tamaño es débil aunque se incrementa si se utiliza la función logarítmica del biovolumen. Se encontraron relaciones significativas entre la precipitación y la anchura de los anillos, mostrando que el déficit hídrico es un factor limitante del crecimiento. Finalmente, se han caracterizado las poblaciones por las diferencias en la estructura de edades, destacando los efectos de las perturbaciones y del uso del suelo. Los resultados proporcionan nuevos datos para la gestión de la especie dentro de su plan de recuperación en marcha.

Reunión Nacional de Geomorfología (14ª. 2016. Málaga), La estación de esquí de Port-Ainé, inaugurada en 1986 y situada en el Pallars Sobirà (Pirineos Centrales, norte de la provincia de Lleida), es una infraestructura clave para esta comarca de montaña. La vertiente en cuya cabecera se sitúa la estación, es drenada hacia el norte por los torrentes de Portainé, Reguerals (afluente del de Portainé) y Ramiosa. Sus cotas máxima y mínima se sitúan, respectivamente, a 2439 m (Torreta de l'Orri) y a 950 m s.n.m. (confluencia con el río Romadriu). La carretera de acceso discurre por dicha vertiente, atravesando los torrentes en diversos puntos. We investigated the variability of the climate-growth relationship of Aleppo pine across its distribution range in the Mediterranean Basin. We constructed a network of tree-ring index chronologies from 63 sites across the region. Correlation function analysis identified the relationships of tree-ring index to climate factors for each site. We also estimated the dominant climatic gradients of the region using principal component analysis of monthly, seasonal, and annual mean temperature and total precipitation from 1,068 climatic gridpoints. Variation in ring width index was primarily related to precipitation and secondarily to temperature. However, we found that the dendroclimatic relationship depended on the position of the site along the climatic gradient. In the southern part of the distribution range, where temperature was generally higher and precipitation lower than the regional average, reduced growth was also associated with warm and dry conditions. In the northern part, where the average temperature was lower and the precipitation more abundant than the regional average, reduced growth was associated with cool conditions. Thus, our study highlights the substantial plasticity of Aleppo pine in response to different climatic conditions. These results do not resolve the source of response variability as being due to either genetic variation in provenance, to phenotypic plasticity, or a combination of factors. However, as current growth responses to inter-annual climate variability vary spatially across existing climate gradients, future climate-growth relationships will also likely be determined by differential adaptation and/or acclimation responses to spatial climatic variation. The contribution of local adaptation and/or phenotypic plasticity across populations to the persistence of species under global warming could be decisive for prediction of climate change impacts across populations. In this sense, a more complex forest dynamics modeling approach that includes the contribution of genetic variation and phenotypic plasticity can improve the reliability of the ecological inferences derived from the climate-growth relationships.

This is the case of relict Mediterranean Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) forests in the Sierra de Gredos mountains (central Spain). We reconstructed the historical fire regime of these forests since 1700 by using paleoecology, historical ecology and dendroecology. We detected an increase in charcoal accumulation rate and coprophilous fungi in peat bogs during the late 19th century when the pine pollen percentage sharply decreased, historical records of fire peaked and many trees showed growth suppressions. We inferred an increased wildfire incidence during the late 19th century, which could have shaped the current distribution of Scots pine forests. This shift in fire-forest interactions can be explained by the uncontrolled use of mountain forests and grasslands due to the dissolution of “Mesta”, one of the major and lasting transhumance livestock associations in Europe.
