17. A Methodology to Determine Undercutting Height in Block/Panel Caving.

Abstract

The undercutting process is a technique employed to initiate the caving of the ore mass in block caving, achieved by creating a basal cut on the block scheduled to be submerged. The effective execution of the undercutting process involves numerous variables, such as the undercut height and the vertical section's undercut geometry, whose influence has often been overlooked. This research presents a methodology for determining the undercut height in a post-undercutting scenario, including variables such as the undercut level design, the extraction level design, and the air gap. Integral to this methodology is a parameterization that estimates the undercut height, from which design abacuses can be created to aid the assessment of present and future operations for any block/panel caving operation that employs the post-undercutting variant. Additionally, two examples demonstrate the application of this methodology, revealing how alterations in the dimensions of the crown pillar and drawbells significantly influence the undercut height. The calculation methodology outlined in this document delivers an undercutting height, providing an evaluation methodology for ongoing operations. Consequently, any height exceeding this suggests a conservative approach, potentially offering an opportunity for design improvement and alignment with the described parameters. 31. A wet muck entry model: a case study for long-term planning at El Teniente mine.

Abstract

Wet muck is a problem in underground mines due to the consequences it brings to the safety of workers, equipment, mining infrastructure, drawpoints, production drifts, and productive sectors, which can generate a loss in reserves. This paper describes a mathematical model to estimate wet muck entry for long-term planning applications at El Teniente. Three basins of El Teniente were included in the study of wet muck control: North, Centre, and South. Each basin includes mines with different characteristics in each exploitation sector. Consequently, models were built for each of the basins to represent its distinct reality. The models have been embedded in machine-learning software that estimates hazards associated with the extraction process for underground mines. To create the models, several variables – each associated with historical extraction – were investigated, including the extraction ratio and the height of draw, amount of water entering the cave, season of the year, presence of mud in neighbouring drawpoints, sectors closed due to wet muck above, and changes in surface or depressions. This study also includes granular flow variables and lithologies. In addition, fragmentation was included and estimated with a granular flow simulator, and the information was validated and calibrated with data from the El Teniente mine. Results indicate that our classification models can reproduce the wet muck phenomenon with an acceptable precision between 69% and 75% and an average tonnage error per drawpoint of 6%−15%. Abstract

In 2000, CATIE began a long-term coffee agroforestry trial aimmg to research complex interactions among climate, soil, shade trees, managements, and coffee varieties, useful for the development of systems that enhance soil ecological restoration, biodiversity, and ecosystem services. The trial consists of combinations of shade and managements: six types of shade from associations of legume and timber trees, and full-sun systems, combined with four managements (high conventional (AC), moderate conventional (MC), intensive organic (MO) and low organic (BO)), resulting in >20 types of systems, in which traditional and improved coffee varieties are also being tested. More than 30 research centers and universities have been involved to produce >30 scientific papers, >40 theses, and >20 technical documents. The revision of the main fmdings indicates that full sun systems (AC, MC) produce high yields but with a trade-off on ecosystem services provision; while agroforestry systems with legume trees, especially MO and MC, reached both good productivity and provisioning ecosystem services (improving soil quality, carbon sequestration, regulation of pests ). Systems with only timber trees and BO collapsed. The economic analysis shows that most agroforestry systems are profitable, including those with MO or BO, with important lessons to reduce production costs. The most successful innovations related to soil improvements, shade and pest regulation, silvicultural mechanization, and carbon storage derived from the trial, were used as inputs to environment-focus policies, design of researchdevelopment projects and programs such as NAMA coffee. The results have been disseminated to more than 40,000 producers and hundreds of students through projects and relevant platforms such as PCP-AGROFORESTA, PROMECAFE, RECIPROCAFE, the Alianza de Mujeres en Café, PROCAGICA-IICA-UE, and coffee courses/diplomas. Thus, it is being demonstrated that diversification and good practices can contribute to adaptation and mitigation strategies in the coffee sector on which millions of families and their food systems depend.

Abstract

In underground mining, conventional loader equipment uses diesel as a power source, implying different drawbacks, such as combustion gases, low visibility, worker's health problems, and high ventilation requirements. Thus, hybrid and electric loaders are being developed by the main industry suppliers who prefer clean technology. In this study, we analyzed the performance of an electro-mechanical powertrain through a dynamic model of underground-loader equipment using field data. This electric LHD model was compared to a diesel loader under the same operational conditions. For the case study, the results showed that the proposed electro-mechanical model, considering 14 tons of capacity, consumed 86.8 kWh, representing 60.5% less energy than the diesel loader with similar speed and torque characteristics. Thus, the proposed methodology is a valuable tool for operators, process engineers, and decision-makers, allowing an energy-efficiency evaluation for electric LHD adoption, based on the current operational data available for conventional equipment.
