The integration of SDI technologies and the reuse of archaeological fieldwork data allow to assess the impact of urbanistic and infrastructure development on open-air Mesolithic site’s preservation and provide precise information needed to develop CRM policies at local, regional, and national action levels. In this paper we present two case studies located in Eastern Spain: The Mesolithic open-air sites of Casa Corona (Villena, Alicante province) and El Collado (Oliva, Valencia Province). Both sites, were excavated in rescue operations in 2008 and 1987-1989 respectively, providing Mesolithic burials and human remains of major cultural and bioanthropological scientific significance. However, unexcavated adjacent archaeological areas of both sites have been partially destroyed afterwards. Here, we show how the combination of accurate imagery and LIDAR elevation data provided by public (free access) data repositories, primary archaeological spatial data acquired during excavations and published information digitized, can be effectively integrated using Geographic Information Systems to monitor the impact of urbanistic and infrastructure development on both sites and perform risk assessment for future planning. We believe this case study exemplifies the benefits of applying the FAIR principles to Mesolithic archaeological data. We hope that this example will encourage similar actions from fellow professional archaeologists and will foster efficient conservation strategies from public and private stakeholders.

En el presente trabajo se publica el resultado de la revisión de los materiales arqueológicos (cerámica y macroutillaje) del Arenal de la Virgen recuperados por José María Soler y depositados en el Museo Arqueológico de Villena. Para la industria lítica tallada se han utilizado los datos publicados por Fortea (1973) que son valorados respecto al nivel de conocimientos actual sobre las industrias líticas del Neolítico en la fachada mediterránea. La información obtenida es interpretada a la luz de los trabajos de campo desarrollados hasta el momento en el marco de un nuevo proyecto de investigación. Los datos provisionales perecen indicar un hiatus ocupacional entre la fase Mesolítica más reciente (correspondiente al Mesolítico de Muescas y Denticulados) y la fase del Neolítico Antiguo. In this paper, we present an updated revision of some archaeological materials (mainly pottery and ground stone tools) recovered by Jose Maria Soler in Arenal de la Virgen in the mid. 60’s of the XX century. This collection was deposited at the Archaeological Museum of Villena and has remained unpublished until now. Additionally, we will draw some comments regarding the lithic assemblage studied by Javier Fortea (1973), taking into account the current state of knowledge of Late Mesolithic and Early Neolithic lithic industries. In the light of recent fieldwork carried out and the revision of Jose Maria Soler materials collection, all data suggest that there is an occupational hiatus between the former Mesolithic phase (corresponding to the Notched and Denticulated Mesolithic), and the latter Early Neolithic phase. Los trabajos de campo llevados a cabo entre 2006 y 2007 fueron financiados mediante varias Ayudas a la Investigación de la Fundación Municipal José María Soler concedidas al proyecto denominado Sobre los Orígenes del Neolítico en Villena y el Alto Vinalopó: el yacimiento prehistórico del Arenal de la Virgen, y al proyecto titulado Cronología absoluta por Carbono 14 del Epipaleolítico y Neolítico Antiguo en Villena. La revisión del presente manuscrito se efectúa en el marco del siguiente proyecto de investigación POSTGLACIAL-MED. Dinámica ambiental y respuestas humanas durante el Postglacial e la fachada Mediterránea de la Península Ibérica (c. 12700-8000 cal BP. (Ref. HAR2013-41197), financiado por el MINECO. In this paper, results from recent archaeological field work carried out in the Neolithic village of Mas d’Is (Penàguila, Alicante) are presented. We focus on an important set of domestic and monumental architectural structures. Integration of data from the site in a regional context allows us to rethink the social relations of the first farmers in the area. At the same time, radiocarbon data from our excavations show a finer chronology of the neolithization in Western Mediterranean, and what is more important to approach its historical process.En este trabajo presentamos los resultados de los recientes trabajos llevados a cabo en la aldea neolítica de Mas d’Is (Penàguila, Alicante), centrándonos en las estructuras documentadas. La integración de los datos obtenidos en un contexto regional nos permiten plantear algunas reflexiones sobre la Arqueología social de los primeros agricultores, al tiempo que las dataciones radiocarbónicas permiten ir ajustando la cronología de la neolitización del Mediterráneo Occidental, así como el desarrollo de dicho proceso histórico.

Fieldwork carried out in the prehistoric site of Arenal de la Virgen (Villena, Alicante) have provided thorough evidences for the first lacustrine occupation belonging to Notches and Denticulates Mesolithic in the Iberian Peninsula. In this paper we present chronostratigraphical and palaeoenvironmental data along with material culture, subsistence and habitat record. The whole information is discussed in the context of cultural processes and environmental dynamics that took place along Early and Middle Holocene transition in the Iberian Mediterranean region. The results point out an advanced chronology in the Notches and Denticulates Mesolithic period and situate the occupation in one of the most humid periods during the Holocene., Los trabajos de excavación desarrollados en el yacimiento prehistórico del Arenal de la Virgen (Villena, Alicante) han permitido documentar la primera ocupación perilacustre del Mesolítico de Muescas y Denticulados en la Península Ibérica. Presentamos los datos cronoestratigráficos, paleoambientales, la cultura material del yacimiento, los datos de subsistencia y hábitat. A continuación se discute la información obtenida en el marco de los procesos culturales y de las dinámicas medioambientales que marcaron la transición del Holoceno inicial al Holoceno medio en la fachada mediterránea. Los resultados sitúan la ocupación del yacimiento en uno de los momentos más húmedos del Holoceno, revelando una posición avanzada en el desarrollo del Mesolítico de Muescas y Denticulados.

La caracterización de los espacios domésticos se presenta como un elemento más en la interpretación de las primeras comunidades agrícolas de la Península Ibérica. En la presente comunicación abordamos el análisis de los espacios domésticos desde una dimensión doble, material y simbólica. Los espacios domésticos como lugares físicos se componen de diversas estructuras, básicamente, estructuras de habitación, almacenamiento y combustión, pero, a su vez, son también el reflejo de una esfera simbólica, un conjunto de percepciones, sentimientos e ideas, resultado de una estructura y unas relaciones sociales determinadas, en el contexto de las propias dinámicas sociales que se desarrollaron durante el proceso de neolitización. El análisis de las evidencias arqueológicas en los yacimientos de Mas d’Is (Penáguila, Alicante) y Peña Oviedo (Camaleño, Cantabria) pretende, por un lado, aportar elementos de discusión en el debate actual sobre espacios domésticos y, por otro, elaborar hipótesis acerca de las transformaciones de las relaciones sociales de cooperación en el seno de las primeras comunidades agrícolas. In this paper domestic space is taken into account as one of the main traits upon which we can interpret the social structure of the first food producers in the Iberian Peninsula. We raise the question from a double perspective, material and symbolic. Domestic spaces are physical places. Often, they have been identified with houses, composed by different structures (storage structures, fire structures...) However, domestic spaces can also include a symbolic significance. We try to understand what were the social and symbolic sphere lives of the people who dwelt in it, within the whole social dynamics of the neolithization process. The archaeological record from two sites, Mas d’Is (Penáguila, Alicante) and Peña Oviedo (Camaleño, Cantabria), on one hand, provides new data that can be discussed in the general framework and, on the other hand, allows to develope some hypothesis concerning with social cooperation relationships in the first food-producer communities.

Les estructures documentades al jaciment de Colata (Montaverner, València) mostren la parcialitat del registre que caracteritza aquest tipus de jaciment a l’aire lliure del IV mil·lenni aC, cosa que obliga a plantejar noves estratègies per a reinterpretar l’evolució en les conductes d’emmagatzematge, consum i producció d’aliments, i en la organització social d’aquestes comunitats. Organització social., The assemblage of several pits recorded at Colata (Montaverner, Valencia), show up the fragmentary preservation of the archaeological record in this kind of site from the 4th millennium cal. BC, thus the development of new strategies becomes basic in the way of draw other interpretations related to storage, consumption and production, and the architecture and social organization of those communities. Recientemente se han abierto nuevas líneas de investigación revisando algunas categorías empleadas en la interpretación funcional de las estructuras, modificando aspectos metodológicos en el análisis de los rellenos y matizando algunas afirmaciones de índole socioeconómico fundamentadas en los cálculos de producción- En este contexto se presentan los resultados del yacimiento de Colata (Valencia, España), con la intención de contribuir a ese panorama de renovación en la interpretación de los yacimientos neolíticos con silos. Recently, new lines of research have been opened by reviewing some categories used in the functional interpretation of structures, modifying methodological aspects in the analysis of landfills and clarifying some socio-economic statements based on production calculations. In this context, the results of the Colata deposit (Valencia, Spain) are presented, with the intention of contributing to this panorama of renewal in the interpretation of the Neolithic deposits with silos.

La aplicación del programa Sidgeipa en la excavación de urgencia realizada en el yacimiento de La Colata (Montaverner, Valencia), ha permitido documentar de forma rápida y fiable, casi un centenar de estructuras negativas, de diversa tipología y atribución cronológica. Una de las características más eficaces de Sidgeipa reside en su capacidad para almacenar, de forma razonable, la gran cantidad de datos generados en la excavación, las coordenadas tridimensionales de todas las estructuras registradas, los materiales hallados en el interior de sus rellenos (incluidos los individuos enterrados) y toda la información correspondiente a las Unidades Estratigráficas que hayan sido distinguidas. La reconstrucción, tanto de cada una de las estructuras como de plantas generales en las que se relacionen dichas estructuras, facilita la comprensión de las distribuciones espaciales y las transformaciones que ha experimentado el yacimiento, desde su formación hasta el momento de su descubrimiento. La documentación arqueológica generada por la aplicación de Sidgeipa en este yacimiento se podría ampliar, fácilmente, en un futuro si se realizaran nuevos obras, que requirieran trabajos arqueológicos en parcelas contiguas a las intervenidas. The application of SIDGEIPA in the excavation carried out at the La Colata site (Montaverner, Valencia), has allowed the rapid and reliable documentation of almost a hundred negative structures, of different typology and chronological attribution. One of the most effective features of Sidgeipa lies in its ability to reasonably store the large amount of data generated in the excavation, the three-dimensional coordinates of all registered structures, the materials found inside its landfills (including buried individuals) and all information corresponding to the Stratigraphical Units that have been distinguished. The reconstruction, both of each of the structures and of general plants in which these structures are related, facilitates the understanding of the spatial distributions and the transformations that the site has undergone, since its formation until the moment of its discovery. The archaeological documentation generated by SIDGEIPA in this site could easily be expanded in the future if new works were carried out, which required archaeological works in plots adjacent to the one dug this time.

En el artículo se presenta un nuevo sistema de información arqueológica: SIDGEIPA -SIstema Distribuido para la GEstión Integral del Patrimonio Arqueológico- SIDGEIPA va más allá de la adaptación de un Sistema de Información Geográfica a la Gestión del Patrimonio arqueológico. Las características más destacables de SIDGEIPA son: el estar desarrollado en código Java lo que implica su capacidad multiplataforma; automatización de la matriz Harris, se trata de una aplicación única con la que se pueden realizar todos los procesos informáticos relacionados con la gestión del patrimonio arqueológico (Dibujo asistido por ordenador, base de datos, procesado de imágenes y otros. Los datos que se presentan se realizaron en la excavación de dos yacimientos arqueológicos del Holoceno Inicial en la Comunidad Valenciana: el Mas D’Is (Penàguila, Àlacant) en realidad la primera aldea neolítica localizada en el Mediterráneo peninsular; y Mangraneres (Andilla, València), pequeño yacimiento al aire libre con niveles mesolíticos y neolíticos. Ambos se encuadrar dentro del proyecto AMAPA (Agricultura y Medio Ambiente de los Primeros Agricultores). In our paper we discuss the different aspects of the process we have followed to develop a completely new software to manage Archaeological Parks. The software named SIDGEIPA (Distributed System for Integral Management of Archaeological Parks) includes different modules allowing user to store archaeological data from different sources (excavation, survey, scientific literature, museum collections...) and to process them automatically in order to simplify archaeological research. The new software has been tested in the AMAPA project (Archaeology and Environment of the first agriculturalist in Mediterranean Spain) including a full implementation of it at the excavation level in the Mas D’Is case (a Neolithic Impressed-Ware site). At the conference we will show examples of how the SIDGEIPA software is able to develop a Harrix Matrix and to model 3D reconstructions. Both Technical aspects and archaeological question will be presented and discussed. Examples of the software functionality will be exposed including Geographical Information Systems, Computes Assisted Design and database management. Development of the software have been possible to financial aid from the FEDER program of the European Union being consequence of the full integration of two research projects the Rural Archaeological Park implemented in the Alcaoia-El Comtat valleys (Alacant, Spain) and the Distributed System for Integral Management of Archaeological.

Our knowledge of the genetic relatedness and structure of ancient hunter-gatherers is however limited, owing to the scarceness and poor molecular preservation of human remains from that period3. Here we analyse 356 ancient hunter-gatherer genomes, including new genomic data for 116 individuals from 14 countries in western and central Eurasia, spanning between 35,000 and 5,000 years ago. We identify a genetic ancestry profile in individuals associated with Upper Palaeolithic Gravettian assemblages from western Europe that is distinct from contemporaneous groups related to this archaeological culture in central and southern Europe4, but resembles that of preceding individuals associated with the Aurignacian culture. This ancestry profile survived during the Last Glacial Maximum (25,000 to 19,000 years ago) in human populations from southwestern Europe associated with the Solutrean culture, and with the following Magdalenian culture that re-expanded northeastward after the Last Glacial Maximum. Conversely, we reveal a genetic turnover in southern Europe suggesting a local replacement of human groups around the time of the Last Glacial Maximum, accompanied by a north-to-south dispersal of populations associated with the Epigravettian culture. From at least 14,000 years ago, an ancestry related to this culture spread from the south across the rest of Europe, largely replacing the Magdalenian-associated gene pool. After a period of limited admixture that spanned the beginning of the Mesolithic, we find genetic interactions between western and eastern European hunter-gatherers, who were also characterized by marked differences in phenotypically relevant variants.
