Limited data are available on pregnant women with COVID-19 and their neonates. We aimed to evaluate the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of newborns born to women infected with COVID-19. A multicenter cohort study was conducted among newborns born to mothers with COVID-19 in 34 neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) in Turkey. Pregnant women (n = 125) who had a positive RT-PCR test and their newborns were enrolled. Cesarean section, prematurity, and low-birthweight infant rates were 71.2%, 26.4%, and 12.8%, respectively. Eight of 125 mothers (6.4%) were admitted to an intensive care unit for mechanical ventilation, among whom six died (4.8%). Majority of the newborns (86.4%) were followed in isolation rooms in the NICU. Four of 120 newborns (3.3%) had a positive RT-PCR test result. Although samples taken on the first day were negative, one neonate became positive on the second day and the other two on the fifth day. Sample from deep tracheal aspirate was positive on the first day in an intubated case. Conclusion: COVID-19 in pregnant women has important impacts on perinatal and neonatal outcomes. Maternal mortality, higher rates of preterm birth and cesarean section, suspected risk of vertical transmission, and low rate of breastfeeding show that family support should be a part of the care in the NICU. OBJECTIVE: Preterm birth is the leading cause of neonatal mortality and a substantial portion of neonatal morbidities. The perinatal mortality and morbidity statistics in developing countries are inadequate. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prematurity problems retrospectively that are the significant causes of morbidity and mortality in tertiary care university hospitals.MATERIAL AND METHODS: The premature infants hospitalized in the tertiary neonatal intensive care unit between January 2015 and December 2017 were included in this study. Maternal and neonatal demographic characteristics and mortality and morbidity were recorded. Respiratory disstres syndrome (RDS), intracranial hemorrhage (İCH), patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), prematurity retinopathy (ROP) and bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) were accepted as morbidity.RESULTS: The morbidity rates of the premeture infants were as follows; RDS 156 (43.9%), ICH 42 (11.8%), PDA 74 (21%), NEC 20 (5.6%), ROP 89 (25%), BPD 74 (20.7%).CONCLUSIONS: Although mortality and morbidity rates were similar to the other data published from our country, this rates were higher than those of developed countries. We believe that our morbidity and mortality rates can reach levels comparable to ratio of developed countries with improved antenatal care, regular follow-up of pregnancy, determine the risks for common causes of mortality such as sepsis and respiratory distress., Amaç: Pretermdoğum yenidoğan ölümlerinin önde gelen nedeni ve yenidoğan morbiditelerininönemli bir kısmını oluşturur. Bu çalışmadaüçüncü düzey yoğun bakım ünitesinde prematüreliğe bağlı morbidite ve mortalitenedenlerini değerlendirmek amaçlandı.Gereç ve Yöntem: Bu çalışmaya 3.düzey bir yenidoğan yoğun bakım servisi’neOcak 2015 ile Aralık 2017 arasında yatan prematüre bebekler dahil edildi.Bulgular: Bebeklerin 156’sında (%43.9) respiratuar distres sendromu (RDS),42’sinde (%11.89) intrakranial kanama (İKK), 78’inde (%21.9) patent duktusarteriosus (PDA), 20’sinde (%5,6) nekrotizan enterokolit (NEK), 89’ında (%25)prematüre retinopatisi (PR), 74’ünde(%21) bronkopulmoner displazi (BPD), tespit edildi.Sonuç: Mortaliteve morbidite oranlarımızın ülkemizden yayınlanan verilerle benzerlikgöstermesine karşın, gelişmiş ülkelerin oranlarının üzerinde olduğu görüldü.Antenatal bakımın iyileştirilmesi, gebelik takiplerinin düzenli yapılması,sepsis ve respiratuvar distres gibi sık görülen mortalite nedenleri içinrisklerin belirlenmesi ve bunlara karşı önlem alınması durumunda morbidite vemortalite oranlarımızın azalacağını düşünmekteyiz.

Already existing in 37 million people worldwide,human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) tends toaffect more people and, thus, it has becomea significant health problem. Turkey is oneof the countries where HIV infection is rarelyseen. Transmission is vertical at %90 of HIV (+)infants and perinatal transmission of HIV hasbeen reduced to less than 1% with the use ofantiretroviral drugs. The risk of complicationsrelated with this prophylactic treatmentmight be accepted when relatively highermorbidity and mortality of HIV infection isconsidered. Meanwhile close follow-up ofpatients is required due to possible toxicity.The transmission of HIV into newborns can beprevented with appropriate management ofthe perinatal period. Türkiye iseHIV’in az görüldüğü ülkeler arasında yeralmaktadır. Çocukluk çağı HIV olgularının%90’ından perinatal yolla geçiş sorumludur veantiretroviral profilaksi ile geçiş riski %1’inaltına düşürülmüştür. HIV enfeksiyonununmortalite ve morbiditesi düşünüldüğü vakitkoruyucu tedavinin komplikasyonları gözealınabilir fakat olası toksisite yönündenhastaların yakın izlemi gerekmektedir. HIVolgularının engellenmesi büyük oranda perinatalsürecin doğru yönetimiyle mümkündür.Burada HIV pozitif annelerden doğmuş olan ikiolgu incelenmiş ve literatür eşliğinde perinatalyönetim süreci gözden geçirilmiştir.
