Abstract

Suruç ilçesi, Şanlıurfa ilinin 45 km.güneybatısında, 400-500 m yükselti değerleri yayılış gösterir. Kent bir ovaüzerine kurulmuştur. Suruç’un önemi, ilkçağlardan günümüze değin hep işlekyollar üzerinde bulunmasından kaynaklanmaktadır. İslam hâkimiyeti dönemindeEl-Cezire bölgesini Akdeniz’e bağlayan yollardan biri buradan geçmekteydi.Şanlıurfa ile Birecik arasındaki yolların ortasında olması ayrıca Harran’laparalel bir hat üzerinde bulunması da geçiş noktalardan birini teşkil etmesineneden olmuştur. Bu güzergâhlardan farklı olarak kuzeyde bulunan, Çarmelik, Yaylak,Samsat, Malatya yerleşmelerine giden konaklama merkezinin menzil noktalarındanbiri olması da ilkçağlardan günümüze değin Suruç ilçesinin önemini artırmıştır.Suruç’un güneyinde bulunan; Menbiç, Rakka, Haleb’e geçişte merkez olması ve herşeyden önce tarihi İpek yolu üzerinde bulunması ilçenin önemini günümüze kadarkorumasını sağlamıştır. Suruç ayrıca özel konumu itibariyle, Ön Asya’yıAvrupa’ya bağlayan ticaret yolları üzerinde kurulmuş, kültür ve ticaretbakımından da çevresiyle bağlantı yeri oluşturmuştur. Suruç’un araştırma sahasıolarak seçilmesindeki amaç, tarihi önemi ve ticari değerinin günümüzdebüyüyerek devam etmesidir. Suruç son yıllarda Güneydoğu Anadolu Projesi’nınetkisiyle açılan Suruç Tüneli ve diğer farklı özellikleri sebebiyle adını sıkçaduyuran bir ilçe haline gelmiştir. Suruç kenti, etki alanının fiziki ve beşerîpotansiyel kaynaklarını henüz yeterince kullanamayan bir yerleşme özelliğinesahiptir. Bu çalışmanın hedeflerinden bir diğeri de var olan kaynakları analizedip ilçe merkezinin sosyal ve ekonomik açıdan gelişmesine engel olanfaktörleri ele almak, var olan kaynakların daha verimli bir biçimdekullanılmasını ve aynı zamanda bu kaynakların Suruç kentini tanıtma adına tektek değerlendirilip ortaya çıkmasını sağlamaktır.
