A general monotony is realized in postwar architecture. But, some architects tried to identify the buildings through various approaches. Emphasizing the façades of the buildings through balcony railings was one of these approaches. So, balcony railings that were considered as aesthetical façade elements came to the fore in Turkish modernism especially through apartment buildings. As a result of the literature review, it is understood that there is a gap on this subject. In this study, selected apartment buildings in Kadıköy were discussed and it was aimed to fill this gap in the literature by an analysis on balcony railings. In this study, the effect of railings is examined through selected examples and a literature analysis is included to understand the formulation of railings. For this study, the period of 1960-1980 was determined and Kadıköy was chosen as the study area because it still contains residential units from this period. In the field research, 173 buildings that attract attention through railings were highlighted and 100 suitable buildings were determined. The balcony railings of these structures were analyzed and a typology was created.
