This work demonstrates that a middle size ring laser gyroscope (RLG) can be a very sensitive and robust instrument for rotational seismology, even if it operates in a quite noisy environment. The RLG has a square cavity, $1.60\times 1.60$ m$^2$, and it lies in a plane orthogonal to the Earth rotational axis. The Fabry-Perot optical cavities along the diagonals of the square were accessed and their lengths were locked to a reference laser. Through a quite simple locking circuit, we were able to keep the sensor fully operative for 14 days. The obtained long term stability is of the order of 3~nanorad/s and the short term sensitivity close is to 2~nanorad/s$\cdot$Hz$^{-1/2}$. The absolute measurement of the Earth angular rotation rate with ground-based instruments becomes challenging if the 1 part in $10^9$ of precision has to be obtained. This threshold is important for fundamental physics and for geodesy, to investigate effects of General Relativity and Lorentz violation in the gravity sector and to provide the fast variation of the Earth rotation rate. High sensitivity Ring Laser Gyroscopes (RLG) are currently the only promising technique to achieve this task in the near future, but their precision has been so far limited by systematics related to the laser operation. In this paper we analyze two different sets of observations, each of them three days long. They were obtained from the G ring laser at the Geodetic Observatory Wettzell. The applied method has been developed for the GINGERINO ring laser in order to identify and extract the laser systematics. For the available data sets the residuals show mostly white noise behavior and the Allan deviation drops below 1 part in $10^9$ after an integration time of about $10^4$~s., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

[Extract] An otherwise well 42-year-old male presented to the emergencydepartment by ambulance with an impalement injury to the rightside of the neck by a 5-cm diameter and 27-cm length tree branchfollowing a motor bike accident. Physical examination on arrivalrevealed a Glasgow Coma Scale of 15, peripheral capillary oxygensaturation 96% on room air, blood pressure 110/70 mmHg andheart rate of 110 sinus rhythm. Besides an evident anhidrosis on theright side of his face, there were no obvious signs of neurovascularcompromise.

Aim. The study was aimed at detailed description of the technique of bariatric surgical interventions with varying metabolic effects in the rat. We also provided comparison between different surgical operations and considered rationale for making several types of surgery simultaneously. Materials and мethods. The study was performed on 120 male Wistar rats (380–510 g) housed in the SPF rodent facility. The animals were anesthetized using isoflurane anesthesia. The following types of surgery were performed and described: sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass, gastrojejunal bypass, ileal transposition, and combination of sleeve gastrectomy and ileal transposition. The technical complexity of surgery was scored according to 10-point scale. Results. The methodological aspects of sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass, gastrojejunal bypass, and ileal transposition in rats are considered in detail. Sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass are the most commonly used types of bariatric surgery, while gastrojejunal bypass and ileal transposition are specifically aimed at modeling of metabolic effects. The article considered preoperative planning as well as major stages of surgery. We focused attention on perioperative complications and technical nuances. Conclusion. Modeling of bariatric surgical interventions on the small laboratory rodents is challenging, requires sophisticated manual skills and microsurgical equipment. The illustrated description of these surgical interventions will provide a useful reference for beginners in this laborious part of experimental surgery.

Gyroscopes IN GEneral Relativity (GINGER) is a proposed experiment with the aim of measuring in a ground laboratory the gravitoelectric and gravitomagnetic effects foreseen by general relativity through an array of ring laser gyroscopes. GINGERINO is a square ring-laser prototype that has been built to investigate the level of noise inside the Gran Sasso underground laboratory. GINGERINO has shown the advantage of the underground location. Now it provides suitable data for geophysics and seismology. Since May 2017, it has continuously acquired data. The analysis of the first 90 days shows that the duty cycle is higher than 95%, and the quantum shot noise limit is of the order of 10−10(rad/s)/Hz. It is located in a seismically active area, and it recorded part of the central Italy earthquakes. Its high sensitivity in the frequency band of fraction of hertz makes it suitable for seismology studies. The main purpose of the present analysis is to investigate the long-term response of the apparatus. Simple and fast routines to suppress the disturbances coming from the laser have been developed. The Allan deviation of the raw data reaches some 10−6 after about 106 s of integration time, while the processed data show an improvement of 1 order of magnitude. Disturbances at the daily time scale are present in the processed data, and the expected signal induced by polar motion and solid Earth tides is covered by those disturbances.

Food Products Containing Inedibles (FPCIs) are believed to represent a source of higher choking risk in children. The aim of this study was to set up a controlled study, conducted on children aged 3-6 in a laboratory setting, in order to understand their behavior when interacting with FPCIs (with reference to mouthing activities, double nature recognition, and toy assembling ability).The experimental phase was divided into two sessions: a FPCI session and a Toy session, to which 247 children were randomly assigned. During these sessions children were observed in order to catch their mouthing activity according to the two types of objects available to them (FPCIs and Toys).This study shows that: (a) children's behavior with respect to toys contained in FPCIs and toys presented alone is not significantly different; (b) children's ability to distinguish between the edible and non-edible part of the FPCI was very high; and (c) mouthing episodes of the inedible parts were negligible and comparable between FPCIs and toys presented alone. This strongly suggests that, with respect to choking risk, FPCIs are not per se distinguishable from toys containing small parts.Restrictions on the sale of FPCIs with small toys exist in the U.S. market. In Europe, FPCIs are allowed to be on sale, under the condition that, in case, they will follow the general regulatory requirements of small toys packaged and sold alone. In this case, they must provide age warnings and labels. Our findings do not justify the different attention that toys in FPCIs are at times afforded by regulators when compared to "stand alone" toys.

Early warning systems are fundamental instruments for the management of critical situations since they are able to signal in advance any anomaly with respect to ordinary situations. The purpose of this paper is to present an early warning system, based on artificial neural networks, for the prevention and control of unauthorized accesses to the air navigation services infrastructure in Italy.

We present the main characteristics of a new kind of laser goniometer being developed by a collaboration between INRIM and INFN. The target is an absolute accuracy of 10 nrad, being the present accuracy of the most precise angular encoders at the level of some 100 nrad. Our key idea is to setup a square laser cavity of 0.5 m in side, making use of the last generation dielectric super-mirrors employed in the larger gyroscopes for seismology and geophysics.

Large frame ring laser gyros performances are ultimately limited by the instabilities of their geometrical parameters. We present the experimental activity on the GP2 ring laser gyro. GP2 is a ring laser gyro devoted to develop advanced stabilization techniques of the ring cavity geometrical scale-factor. A method based on optical interferometry has been developed for canceling the deformations of the resonator. The method is based on the measurement and stabilization of the absolute length of the cavity perimeter and of the resonators formed by the opposite cavity mirrors. The optical frequency reference in the experiment is an iodine-stabilized He-Ne laser, with a relative frequency stability of 10−11. The measurement of the absolute length of the two resonators has been demonstrated up to now on a test bench. We discuss the experimental results on GP2: the present performances as a ring laser gyro and the stabilization scheme to be implemented in the near future.

We present the experimental activity on the development of a Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) strain sensor for volcano monitoring. We produced and tested a prototype of FBG strain sensor, with a high resolution and accuracy in static measurements and with a low-cost readout system. Here we present the results of a field campaign with a preliminary single-axis FBG strain sensor prototype on Mt. Etna, which was carried out in order to check the system performances in out-of-the-lab conditions and in the hostile volcanic environment (lack of mains electricity for power, strong diurnal temperature changes, strong wind, erosive ash, snow and ice during the winter time), and to determine whether measurable changes are induced across a 1989 fracture system during the paroxysmal phases of Etna's volcanic activity. In addition we present the design and laboratory test of a multi-axis strain sensor configuration.

A high-peak-power (several hundreds of watts) pulsed CO/sub 2/ laser, recently developed in our laboratory, has been used for exciting optically pumped far-infrared laser transitions of N/sub 2/H/sub 4/. A systematic search for N/sub 2/H/sub 4/ absorption coincidences with 10P and 10HP CO/sub 2/ laser emissions has led to the observation of 27 new far-infrared laser lines, excited by 18 different absorption transitions. All of these new lines have been characterized in wavelength, offset, relative polarization, optimum operation pressure and intensity. Using the LaseRitz program, ten of these lines were assigned, corresponding to five laser systems. For other two laser systems possible J and K quantum numbers of the energy levels involved in the laser transitions were given.

Metal-semiconductor point contact diodes have proved to be good detectors and mixers for radiation from the far-infrared to visible. Until now GaAs, InSb and InP are the most studied and used semiconductor materials for these devices. In this work we present the performance in the visible and infrared region for metal-semiconductor point-contact diodes with GaSb or InAs as the semiconductor layers. These two new materials have shown good characteristics.

Analyzing the recent high-quality genome sequence of the domestic dog (Canis lupus familiaris), we deduced for the first time in a mammalian species belonging to Carnivora order, the genomic structure and the putative origin of the TRG locus. New variable (TRGV), joining (TRGJ) and constant (TRGC) genes for a total of 40 are organized into eight cassettes aligned in tandem in the same transcriptional orientation, each containing the basic recombinational unit V-J-J-C, except for a J-J-C cassette, that lacks the V gene and occupies the 3' end of the locus. Amphiphysin (AMPH) and related to steroidogenic acute regulatory protein D3-N-terminal like (STARD3NL) genes flank, respectively, the 5' and 3' ends of the canine TRG locus that spans about 460kb. Moreover LINE1 elements, evenly distributed along the entire sequence, significantly (20.59%) contribute to the architecture of the dog TRG locus. Eight of the 16 TRGV genes are functional and belong to 4 different subgroups. Canine TRGJ genes are two for each cassette and only seven out of 16 are functional. The germline configuration and the exon-intron organization of the 8 TRGC genes was determined, six of them resulting functional. The dot plot similarity genomic comparison of human, mouse and dog TRG loci highlighted the occurrence of reiterated duplications of the cassettes during the dog TRG locus evolution. On the other hand the low ratio of functional genes to the total number of canine TRG genes (21/40), suggest that there is no correlation between the extensive duplications of the cassettes and a need for new functional genes. Furthermore the comparison revealed that the TRGC6, C7 and C8 genes are highly related across species suggesting these existed before the primate-rodent-canidae lineages diverged.

Background Several patients, especially women, seek advice because of hair loss. They may be diagnosed clinically as having telogen effluvium (TE) or androgenetic alopecia (AGA), but histopathology may reveal that a proportion of them have in fact alopecia areata incognita (AAI). Objectives To detect dystrophic anagen hairs in such patients. Methods We studied 1932 patients with hair loss and no signs of classical alopecia areata. They were submitted to the modified wash test (which counts the total number of telogen hairs lost and the percentage of vellus hairs) and divided into patients having pure TE (403), patients with AGA + TE (1235) and patients with pure AGA (294). Dystrophic hairs were detected with a low magnification microscope. Results Dystrophic hairs were observed in 13 patients with TE (3.2%), in 54 with AGA + TE (4.4%) and in none with AGA. In addition, 7 patients with TE and 32 with AGA + TE developed small patches of alopecia areata in 6 to 9 weeks. No patches developed in patients with AGA. Conclusions The presence of dystrophic hairs and the development of patches of alopecia areata (and their absence in pure AGA) provide a first evidence of the possibility that within the heterogenous condition named TE some patients have in fact AAI.

The purpose of this study was to estimate the lead intake from crystalware resulting from short-term contacts with beverages, under conditions that are likely to occur to a consumer. The extraction ability of different kinds of beverages was estimated by comparison with 4% acetic acid under conditions of continuous contact for 3 h. It was found that lead release increased in the following order: cola drinkHAcwhiskywhite wine. Under conditions of repeated use under different scenarios, lead release showed a steep decrease with increasing number of contacts, for both wine and cola drink. The maximum lead intake resulted from the cola drink, corresponding to an ingestion of 14.5 micrograms Pb for consumption of 350 ml beverage. Assuming a fixed contribution from the diet of 71 micrograms/day, in the six scenarios taken into consideration, total daily lead intake levels ranged from a minimum of about 76 micrograms up to a maximum of 86 micrograms lead. As these values, converted on a weekly basis, would correspond to 35% and 40% PTWI respectively, significant health risks resulting from the ingestion of beverages in contact with crystalware can be excluded. Finally it was found that the use of a dishwater did not affect significantly the release of lead into wine, while release into cola drink was slightly but significantly increased after the third cycle.

Periodic limb movements during sleep (PLMS) and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) are two common sleep disorders. The similarity in periodicity of periodic limb movements (PLMs) and obstructive sleep apneas (OSAs) led us to hypothesize the existence of a common central generator responsible for the periodicity of both OSAs and PLMs. In order to test this hypothesis, we compared apnea periodicity before continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment with PLMs periodicity during CPAP treatment in 26 OSA patients, consecutively recorded and treated in our sleep laboratory. The investigation on CPAP was performed twice, once during the initial evaluation and once during a follow-up evaluation after 3 months of home treatment with CPAP. Our results showed that, in this sample, 16 patients out of 26 had an association of OSAS and PLMS, defined as the occurrence of at least 5 PLMs per hour of sleep. The mean apnea interval - measured as the time between the beginning of two successive apneas - was 43.1 s (+/-15.2, SD) and the mean PLM interval - calculated in the same way - was 29.6 s (+/-15.2) during the baseline night, 28.5 s (+/-15.7) during the first CPAP night, and 29.8 s (+/-14.8) during the second CPAP night. Thus, the periodicity of the two phenomena (apneas and PLMs) was different, both before and after CPAP treatment (P< 0.05). When considering the interval between the end of an event (apnea or PLM) and the beginning of the next one the mean apnea interval was 19.5 s (+/-11. 6), and the mean PLM interval was 28.1 s (+/-15.3) during the untreated night, 26.6 s (+/-16) during the first CPAP night and 27.9 s (+/-15) during the second CPAP night. The shortening of apnea intervals with this method of measuring intervals reflects the longer duration of apneas as compared to PLMs. Again the intervals between PLMs were not different between each other but the intervals between apneas were different from the intervals between PLMs (P< 0. 05) These results show that the periodicity of PLMs is different from that of OSAs, suggesting that sleep apneas and PLMs are not generated by a common central generator.

We have used our new pulsed CO2 laser, operating both on regular and hot bands, to excite the 13CD3OH methanol isotopomer. This has lead to the observation of 13 new high-threshold far-infrared laser emissions (also identified as terahertz laser lines), with frequencies in the range between 24.11 and 102.56 cm-1 (0.72-3.07 THz). The absorption transitions leading to these new FIR laser emissions have been located by observing the optoacoustic absorption spectra around the CO2 emissions. Here, we present these new far-infrared laser lines, characterized in wavelength, polarization, offset relative to the center of the pumping CO2 laser transition, relative intensity, and optimum operation pressure.

The sensitivity achieved by large laser gyroscopes opens the perspective of observing in a ground laboratories very thin relativistic effect related to the Earth rotating mass (gravitomagnetic effect or Lense-Thirring effect). The required accuracy asks for a strict control of the ring cavity geometry. Here we present a control procedure that can be applied in order to solve this task.

The kinetic behaviour of the aminoglycoside aminosidine, given at 15 mg/kg intravenously, intramuscularly and subcutaneously, was studied in 5 dogs to determine the appropriate dosage schedule. The pharmacokinetic behaviour of aminosidine in dogs was similar to that in other species, except that it was eliminated more slowly (beta = 0.007 +/- 0.0003 min-1). Intramuscular and subcutaneous administration produced peak serum concentrations (Cmax[im] = 32 +/- 6.4 micrograms/ml; Cmax[ac] = 36 +/- 3.4 micrograms/ml) and times to peak concentration (Tmax = 60 min for both) that did not differ significantly; and neither compartmental nor non-compartmental analysis revealed any significant differences between any of the kinetic parameters obtained for these two extravenous routes of administration. Comparison of these results with previously published data suggests that aminosidine given once daily at 15 mg/kg would be as effective all, and safer than, the two or three daily administrations commonly employed in dogs.

GINGER (Gyroscopes IN GEneral Relativity) is a proposal for measuring in a ground-based laboratory the Lense-Thirring effect, known also as inertial frame dragging, that is predicted by General Relativity, and is induced by the rotation of a massive source. GINGER will consist in an array of at least three square ring lasers, mutually orthogonal, with about 6-10 m side, and located in a deep underground site, possibly the INFN - National Laboratories of Gran Sasso. The tri-axial design will provide a complete estimation of the laboratory frame angular velocity, to be compared with the Earths rotation estimate provided by IERS with respect the fixed stars frame. Large-size ring lasers have already reached a very high sensitivity, allowing for relevant geodetic measurements. The accuracy required for Lense-Thirring effect measurement is higher than 10-14 rad/s and therefore Earth angular velocity must be measured within one part in 10-9. A 3.6 m side, square ring laser, called GINGERino, has been recently installed inside the Gran Sasso underground laboratories in order to qualify the site for a future installation of GINGER. We discuss the current status of the experimental work, and in particular of the GINGERino prototype.

We report the observation of the ground rotation induced by the Mw=9.0, 11th of March 2011, Japan earthquake. The rotation measurements have been conducted with a ring laser gyroscope operating in a vertical plane, thus detecting rotations around the horizontal axis. Comparison of ground rotations with vertical accelerations from a co-located force-balance accelerometer shows excellent ring laser coupling at periods longer than 100s. Under the plane wave assumption, we derive a theoretical relationship between horizontal rotation and vertical acceleration for Rayleigh waves. Due to the oblique mounting of the gyroscope with respect to the wave direction-of-arrival, apparent velocities derived from the acceleration / rotation rate ratio are expected to be always larger than, or equal to the true wave propagation velocity. This hypothesis is confirmed through comparison with fundamental-mode, Rayleigh wave phase velocities predicted for a standard Earth model., Comment: Accepted for publication in Journal of Seismology

Ilex paraguariensis A. St. - Hil. (erva-mate) é uma árvore pertencente à família Aquifoleaceae, nativa da região sul da América do Sul e de grande importância cultural e econômica para os três estados da região sul do Brasil. O presente trabalho determinou o potencial antimicrobiano do extrato de erva-mate obtido por fluido supercrítico, frente a alguns microrganismos. As folhas de Ilex paraguariensis foram coletadas na região norte do RS. O extrato bruto da planta desidratada foi obtido pelo método de extração com fluido supercrítico, utilizando dióxido de carbono (CO2) como solvente. Foi obtida a solução mãe desse extrato (100 mg mL-1) que a seguir foi diluído (50; 25; 12,5; 6,25 mg mL-1) para avaliação da atividade antimicrobiana por meio da técnica de difusão do disco em ágar Müeller Hinton, sobre cepas de Acinetobacter baumannii (ATCC 19606), Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 27853), Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923) e Enterococcus faecalis (ATCC 29212). As análises foram efetuadas em triplicata, utilizando como controle negativo disco estéril sem impregnação e como controle positivo discos de antibióticos comerciais variáveis de acordo com a espécie bacteriana. Após 16 a 24h de incubação a 35ºC os halos com significância foram medidos. Observou-se atividade antimicrobiana frente a S. aureus (halos de inibição variaram entre 7 e 18 mm) e para P. aeruginosa (halos entre 6 e 11 mm), ambos nas concentrações de 100 até 25 mg mL-1. O extrato obtido por extração em fluido supercrítico de Ilex paraguariensis apresentou atividade antimicrobiana frente a S. aureus e P. aeruginosa.

G-Pisa is an experiment which is investigating the possibility to operate a laser-gyro with area less than 1 m2 and high sensitivity in order to improve the performances of the mirrors suspension of the gravitational wave antenna Virgo. The experimental set-up consists of a 4 mirrors square cavity, the mechanical drawing allows us to scale the area from 2 down to 0.81 m2. G-Pisa is working since July 2008, in the following the results so far obtained are reported. At low frequency, below 1 Hz, the sensitivity is typically in the range of 10−8 rad/s/√Hz, it has been checked that G-Pisa is working properly in single mode and multimode good stable operation has been observed up to 4 mode

A survey based on clinical, pathological and microbiological investigations was performed on 11 Brown Swiss cattle affected with depression, anorexia, agalaxia, ruminal hypomotility, abdominal pain and melaena. In eight animals, macroscopical lesions consisted in haemorrhagic enteritis in the small intestine. Seven of eight isolates from tissue samples were identified as Clostridum perfringens type A, and four were identified as C. perfringens type A with the beta2 toxin gene. Based on these observations, animals were considered affected with haemorrhagic bowel syndrome.

A high-stability and excellent spectral purity 72-GHz Gunn oscillator was realized to characterize ultra-wide-band Schottky diodes based on intrinsic InP InSb semiconductors. The developed microwave oscillator shows a relative frequency stability of 2x 10-9 for observation times of 1 s and a collapse frequency of 4THz. Preliminary frequency measurements of different emission lines of a far infrared laser demonstrate good detection efficiency with a typical bandwidth of a 1 THz for these novel optical receivers.

A longitudinal study of tick-borne diseases (TBDs) in Southern Italy was carried out by monitoring two dairy farms (A and B) located in the Apulia Region. On each farm ten calves and ten heifers were observed monthly from May 1999 to February 2001 for clinical signs and blood parameters; antibodies against Babesia bigemina and Anaplasma marginale using an ELISA test were also monitored for the first eight months of the study. Totals of 28 and 14 cases of TBDs were observed in the complete herds of Farms A and B, respectively. Timing of disease appearance, categories of animals affected and changes in blood parameters are discussed.

Lead (Pb) is an environmental toxicant that can induce structural and functional abnormalities of multiple organ systems, including the central nervous and the immune systems. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of extracellular Pb supplementation on the cellular content of the metal and on the proliferation and the survival of normal rat fibroblasts. We found that the concentration of Pb in the culture medium was 0.060 microM and the normal Pb concentration in rat fibroblasts was 3.1 +/- 0.1 ng/10(7) cells. Then we exposed the cells to increasing concentration of Pb (as Pb acetate) from 0.078-320 microM. We observed a dose-dependent inhibition of cell proliferation after 48 h, which was already apparent at a concentration of 0.312 microM (p = 0.122) and became statistically significant for concentration higher than 0.625 microM (p = 0.0003 at 5 microM). Cell proliferation was completely compromised at 320 microM Pb total inhibition of cell proliferation. To investigate the mechanisms of Pb-mediated inhibition of cell proliferation, we evaluated the occurrence of apoptosis in the same cells and found that cytosolic DNA fragments, hallmark of apoptotic cell death, increased significantly at Pb concentrations from 2.5-10.0 microM. The occurrence of apoptosis was also confirmed by FACS analysis which showed the appearance of a subdiploid peak at Pb concentrations from 5-20 microM. The distribution of cells in the cell cycle showed a dose-dependent accumulation of cells in the G0/G1 phase mainly compensated by a decrease in the percentage of cells in the S phase. In conclusion, our results demonstrate that induction of apoptosis contributes to the Pb-induced inhibition of cell proliferation in rat fibroblasts.

The effects on normal rat fibroblasts of lead supplementation (as lead acetate) in the medium were examined. The amount of lead acetate ranged from 0.078 microM to 320 microM, at 14 concentrations. The normal level of lead in the medium was 0.060 microM, and the normal concentration of lead in the fibroblasts was 3.1 +/- 0.1 ng/10(7) cells: these represented the control conditions. On studying fibroblast proliferation and survival after incubation for 48 hours, a lead acetate dose-dependent inhibition of cell proliferation was observed, the results being shown to be significant by ANOVA (p0.01), and suggesting a significant dose-response relationship. Apoptosis, evaluated by quantifying cytoplasmic DNA fragments, differs significantly between the lead levels tested. The distribution in the cell cycle, evaluated by using a fluorescence-activated cell sorter, showed a dose-dependent accumulation of cells in the G0/G1 phase, with a compensatory decrease in the percentage of cells in the S phase. Moreover, the occurrence of a subdiploid peak confirmed that apoptosis was more evident when the medium was supplemented with lead acetate at concentrations of 5-20 microM. The inhibition of cell growth is probably due to a direct inhibition of cell proliferation.

Recently several cases of theileriosis due to the haemoprotozoan Theileria buffeli/orientalis have been recorded in the Apulian region, Italy. In this area other tick-borne pathogens were usually identified such as Anaplasma marginale and Babesia bigemina. Outbreaks were recorded showing that these pathogens can be observed separately or in mixed infections. Sub-clinical cases and carrier animals were also previously identified. A lack of specific techniques could not rule out the presence of other haemoparasites such as T. annulata, B. divergens, B. bovis, Ehrlichia phagocytophila and E. bovis. Moreover little is known about the tick species involved in the dissemination of these diseases. Therefore more powerful techniques to specifically identify Theileria or Babesia species have been recently developed. A PCR technique and reverse line blotting (RLB) system to specifically identify six Theileria species and three Babesia species were used. T. buffeli/orientalis and B. bigemina were the only pathogens observed in the targeted animals. The authors also present some changes in blood parameters for the animals followed during this study.

This paper reviews basic information on the knowledge of tick-borne diseases, babesiosis, anaplasmosis and theileriosis, in horses, cattle, sheep and goats in Italy with particular reference to the southern part of the country. It is stressed that there is limited knowledge about the parasite species present, their vectors, distribution, prevalence and impact on livestock production and there is the need to assess their epidemiology. A study carried out in the Apulia region to assess the prevalence of Anaplasma marginale infection in 1,648 cattle showed a seroprevalence of 17% using the Card Agglutination Test. In another study in the same region a microscopic prevalence of 78% for Theileria spp. was found in 60 cows. Afterwards using the IFAT test the Theileria sp. was identified as Theileria buffeli/orientalis.

Protozoa of the genus Leishmania infect reticuloendothelial cells of several mammalian species, including dogs, in which they often give rise to a chronic, not self-healing visceral disease. The parasitocidal mechanism of peripheral blood monocytes towards Leishmania in the dog has not been investigated in detail. Consequently, Leishmania infantum-infected monocyte cultures of healthy dogs were evaluated using the following parameters: (1) phagocytosis and killing capacities; (2) oxidative burst, in terms of superoxide anion (O2-) release, and (3) nitric oxide (NO) activity, in terms of nitrite (NO2-) production in the presence or absence of the NO synthase inhibitor NG-monomethyl-L-arginine (NGMMLA). Parallel experiments were performed on monocytes stimulated with supernatants of concanavalin A-activated PBMC and on unstimulated monocytes. The amount of IFN-gamma in PBMC supernatants used for monocyte activation was determined by a biological assay on a canine Madin Darby cell line. Results demonstrated that phagocytosis, killing capacity and O2- production significantly increased in monocytes stimulated with supernatants, in comparison with unstimulated cells. A positive correlation was observed between the killing capacity, the O2- production and the amount of IFN-gamma in PBMC supernatants employed for monocyte activation. No significant differences were observed in NO production between unstimulated and stimulated cultures, or between the same cultures with and without NGMMLA. Finally, the killing percentage was similar in the presence or absence of NGMMLA, suggesting that in this experimental model peripheral blood dog monocytes lack NO-mediated killing.

This paper combines recent FIR laser line frequency measurement results with assignments for CH318OH. 10 FIR lines have been measured in frequency and the study of the CO stretching band by highA¢â‚¬â€resolution Fourier transform spectroscopy has led to the assignments and confirmations through transition combination loops of these lines.

We examined 444 dogs by visiting farms and peripheral districts on the Gargano promontory (Province of Foggia, Apulia, South Italy). Clinical examination and immunofluorescence antibody test for leishmaniasis were performed. Bone marrow and lymph node samples obtained from 25 dogs with positive serological test were cultured on Tobie-Evans medium. The results obtained show both a higher seropositivity rate for canine leishmaniasis (14.4%) and a higher percentage of asymptomatic dogs with positive serological test (53.1%) compared to previous research in the same area. Seven strains isolated from infected dogs belonged to Leishmania infantum species zymodeme Montpellier 1. None of 82 sera of humans living in close contact with infected dogs were positive for leishmaniasis.
