Abstract

Abstract The multi-staged XENON program at INFN Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso aims to detect dark matter with two-phase liquid xenon time projection chambers of increasing size and sensitivity. The XENONnT experiment is the latest detector in the program, planned to be an upgrade of its predecessor XENON1T. It features an active target of 5.9 tonnes of cryogenic liquid xenon (8.5 tonnes total mass in cryostat). The experiment is expected to extend the sensitivity to WIMP dark matter by more than an order of magnitude compared to XENON1T, thanks to the larger active mass and the significantly reduced background, improved by novel systems such as a radon removal plant and a neutron veto. This article describes the XENONnT experiment and its sub-systems in detail and reports on the detector performance during the first science run.

Abstract

Abstract Xenon dual-phase time projections chambers (TPCs) have proven to be a successful technology in studying physical phenomena that require low-background conditions. With $$40\,\textrm{t}$$ 40 t of liquid xenon (LXe) in the TPC baseline design, DARWIN will have a high sensitivity for the detection of particle dark matter, neutrinoless double beta decay ( $$0\upnu \upbeta \upbeta $$ 0 ν β β ), and axion-like particles (ALPs). Although cosmic muons are a source of background that cannot be entirely eliminated, they may be greatly diminished by placing the detector deep underground. In this study, we used Monte Carlo simulations to model the cosmogenic background expected for the DARWIN observatory at four underground laboratories: Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS), Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF), Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane (LSM) and SNOLAB. We present here the results of simulations performed to determine the production rate of $${}^{137}$$ 137 Xe, the most crucial isotope in the search for $$0\upnu \upbeta \upbeta $$ 0 ν β β of $${}^{136}$$ 136 Xe. Additionally, we explore the contribution that other muon-induced spallation products, such as other unstable xenon isotopes and tritium, may have on the cosmogenic background.

Abstract

Abstract A low-energy electronic recoil calibration of XENON1T, a dual-phase xenon time projection chamber, with an internal $${}^{37}$$ 37 Ar source was performed. This calibration source features a 35-day half-life and provides two mono-energetic lines at 2.82 keV and 0.27 keV. The photon yield and electron yield at 2.82 keV are measured to be ( $$32.3\,\pm \,0.3$$ 32.3 ± 0.3 ) photons/keV and ( $$40.6\,\pm \,0.5$$ 40.6 ± 0.5 ) electrons/keV, respectively, in agreement with other measurements and with NEST predictions. The electron yield at 0.27 keV is also measured and it is ( $$68.0^{+6.3}_{-3.7}$$ 68 . 0 - 3.7 + 6.3 ) electrons/keV. The $${}^{37}$$ 37 Ar calibration confirms that the detector is well-understood in the energy region close to the detection threshold, with the 2.82 keV line reconstructed at ( $$2.83\,\pm \,0.02$$ 2.83 ± 0.02 ) keV, which further validates the model used to interpret the low-energy electronic recoil excess previously reported by XENON1T. The ability to efficiently remove argon with cryogenic distillation after the calibration proves that $${}^{37}$$ 37 Ar can be considered as a regular calibration source for multi-tonne xenon detectors.

Abstract

Abstract The XENON collaboration has published stringent limits on specific dark matter – nucleon recoil spectra from dark matter recoiling on the liquid xenon detector target. In this paper, we present an approximate likelihood for the XENON1T 1 t-year nuclear recoil search applicable to any nuclear recoil spectrum. Alongside this paper, we publish data and code to compute upper limits using the method we present. The approximate likelihood is constructed in bins of reconstructed energy, profiled along the signal expectation in each bin. This approach can be used to compute an approximate likelihood and therefore most statistical results for any nuclear recoil spectrum. Computing approximate results with this method is approximately three orders of magnitude faster than the likelihood used in the original publications of XENON1T, where limits were set for specific families of recoil spectra. Using this same method, we include toy Monte Carlo simulation-derived binwise likelihoods for the upcoming XENONnT experiment that can similarly be used to assess the sensitivity to arbitrary nuclear recoil signatures in its eventual 20 t-year exposure.

Abstract

Abstract The selection of low-radioactive construction materials is of the utmost importance for rare-event searches and thus critical to the XENONnT experiment. Results of an extensive radioassay program are reported, in which material samples have been screened with gamma-ray spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and $$^{222}$$ 222 Rn emanation measurements. Furthermore, the cleanliness procedures applied to remove or mitigate surface contamination of detector materials are described. Screening results, used as inputs for a XENONnT Monte Carlo simulation, predict a reduction of materials background ( $$\sim $$ ∼ 17%) with respect to its predecessor XENON1T. Through radon emanation measurements, the expected $$^{222}$$ 222 Rn activity concentration in XENONnT is determined to be 4.2 ( $$^{+0.5}_{-0.7}$$ - 0.7 + 0.5 ) $$\upmu $$ μ Bq/kg, a factor three lower with respect to XENON1T. This radon concentration will be further suppressed by means of the novel radon distillation system.

Abstract

The data of cosmic ray NEVOD-DECOR experiment on the investigation of inclined muon bundles for a long time period (May 2012 - March 2021) are presented. The analysis showed that the observed intensity of muon bundles at primary cosmic ray energies of about 1 EeV and higher can be compatible with the expectation in frame of widely used hadron interaction models only under the assumption of an extremely heavy mass composition. This conclusion is consistent with data of several experiments on investigations of muon content in air showers, but contradicts the available fluorescence data on $X_{\text{max}}$ which favor a light mass composition at these energies. In order to clarify the nature of the "muon puzzle", investigations of the muon bundle energy deposit in the detector material were carried out. For the first time, experimental estimates of the average energy of muons in the bundles of inclined air showers initiated by primary particles with energies from 10 to 1000 PeV have been obtained.

Abstract

Abstract The selection of low-radioactive construction materials is of utmost importance for the success of low-energy rare event search experiments. Besides radioactive contaminants in the bulk, the emanation of radioactive radon atoms from material surfaces attains increasing relevance in the effort to further reduce the background of such experiments. In this work, we present the $$^{222}$$ 222 Rn emanation measurements performed for the XENON1T dark matter experiment. Together with the bulk impurity screening campaign, the results enabled us to select the radio-purest construction materials, targeting a $$^{222}$$ 222 Rn activity concentration of $$10\,\mathrm{\,}\upmu \mathrm{Bq}/\mathrm{kg}$$ 10 μ Bq / kg in $$3.2\,\mathrm{t}$$ 3.2 t of xenon. The knowledge of the distribution of the $$^{222}$$ 222 Rn sources allowed us to selectively eliminate problematic components in the course of the experiment. The predictions from the emanation measurements were compared to data of the $$^{222}$$ 222 Rn activity concentration in XENON1T. The final $$^{222}$$ 222 Rn activity concentration of $$(4.5\pm 0.1)\,\mathrm{\,}\upmu \mathrm{Bq}/\mathrm{kg}$$ ( 4.5 ± 0.1 ) μ Bq / kg in the target of XENON1T is the lowest ever achieved in a xenon dark matter experiment.

Abstract

Abstract Xenon dual-phase time projection chambers designed to search for weakly interacting massive particles have so far shown a relative energy resolution which degrades with energy above $$\sim $$ ∼ 200 keV due to the saturation effects. This has limited their sensitivity in the search for rare events like the neutrinoless double-beta decay of $$^{136} \hbox {Xe}$$ 136Xe at its Q value, $$Q_{\beta \beta }\simeq 2.46\,\hbox {MeV}$$ Qββ≃2.46MeV . For the XENON1T dual-phase time projection chamber, we demonstrate that the relative energy resolution at $$1\,\sigma /\mu $$ 1σ/μ is as low as ($$0.80 \pm 0.02$$ 0.80±0.02 ) % in its one-ton fiducial mass, and for single-site interactions at $$Q_{\beta \beta }$$ Qββ . We also present a new signal correction method to rectify the saturation effects of the signal readout system, resulting in more accurate position reconstruction and indirectly improving the energy resolution. The very good result achieved in XENON1T opens up new windows for the xenon dual-phase dark matter detectors to simultaneously search for other rare events.

Abstract

In this work, we use muon bundles, which are formed in extensive air showers and detected at the ground level, as a tool for searching for anisotropy in high-energy cosmic rays. Such choice is explained by the penetrating ability of muons that allows them to retain the direction of primary particles with good accuracy. In 2012–2022, we performed long-term muon-bundle detection with the coordinate-tracking detector DECOR, which is a part of the Experimental Complex NEVOD (MEPhI, Moscow). To search for cosmic-ray anisotropy, muon bundles arriving at zenith angles in the range from 15° to 75° in the local coordinate system are used. During the entire period of data taking, about 14 million of such events have been accumulated. In this paper, we describe some methods developed in the Experimental Complex NEVOD and implemented in our research, including: the method for compensating for the influence of meteorological conditions on the intensity of muon bundles at the Earth’s surface, the method for accounting for the design features of the detector and the inhomogeneity of the detection efficiency for different directions, as well as the method for estimating the primary energies of cosmic rays. Here we present the results of the search for the dipole anisotropy of cosmic rays with energies in the PeV region and also compare them with the results obtained at other scientific facilities.

Abstract

Abstract In this paper, we describe the XENON100 data analyses used to assess the target-intrinsic background sources radon ( ), thoron ( ) and krypton ( ). We detail the event selections of high-energy alpha particles and decay-specific delayed coincidences. We derive distributions of the individual radionuclides inside the detector and quantify their abundances during the main three science runs of the experiment over a period of $$\sim 4\,\hbox {years}$$ ∼4years , from January 2010 to January 2014. We compare our results to external measurements of radon emanation and krypton concentrations where we find good agreement. We report an observed reduction in concentrations of radon daughters that we attribute to the plating-out of charged ions on the negatively biased cathode.

Abstract

Abstract The XENON1T experiment at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) is the first WIMP dark matter detector operating with a liquid xenon target mass above the ton-scale. Out of its 3.2 t liquid xenon inventory, 2.0 t constitute the active target of the dual-phase time projection chamber. The scintillation and ionization signals from particle interactions are detected with low-background photomultipliers. This article describes the XENON1T instrument and its subsystems as well as strategies to achieve an unprecedented low background level. First results on the detector response and the performance of the subsystems are also presented.

Abstract

Abstract The XENON1T dark matter experiment aims to detect weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) through low-energy interactions with xenon atoms. To detect such a rare event necessitates the use of radiopure materials to minimize the number of background events within the expected WIMP signal region. In this paper we report the results of an extensive material radioassay campaign for the XENON1T experiment. Using gamma-ray spectroscopy and mass spectrometry techniques, systematic measurements of trace radioactive impurities in over one hundred samples within a wide range of materials were performed. The measured activities allowed for stringent selection and placement of materials during the detector construction phase and provided the input for XENON1T detection sensitivity estimates through Monte Carlo simulations.

Abstract

Abstract We describe the purification of xenon from traces of the radioactive noble gas radon using a cryogenic distillation column. The distillation column was integrated into the gas purification loop of the XENON100 detector for online radon removal. This enabled us to significantly reduce the constant $$^{222}$$ 222 Rn background originating from radon emanation. After inserting an auxiliary $$^{222}$$ 222 Rn emanation source in the gas loop, we determined a radon reduction factor of $$R\,>\,27$$ R > 27 (95% C.L.) for the distillation column by monitoring the $$^{222}$$ 222 Rn activity concentration inside the XENON100 detector.

Abstract The XENON1T experiment aims for the direct detection of dark matter in a detector filled with 3.3 tons of liquid xenon. In order to achieve the desired sensitivity, the background induced by radioactive decays inside the detector has to be sufficiently low. Abstract

We present results on the search for two-neutrino double-electron capture (2νECEC) of 124Xe and neutrinoless double-β decay (0νββ) of 136Xe in XENON1T. We consider captures from the K shell up to the N shell in the 2νECEC signal model and measure a total half-life of T2νECEC1/2=(1.1±0.2stat±0.1sys)×1022yr with a 0.87kgyr isotope exposure. The statistical significance of the signal is 7.0σ. We use XENON1T data with 36.16kgyr of 136Xe exposure to search for 0νββ. We find no evidence of a signal and set a lower limit on the half-life of T0νββ1/2>1.2×1024yrat90%CL. This is the best result from a dark matter detector without an enriched target to date. We also report projections on the sensitivity of XENONnT to 0νββ. Assuming a 275kgyr 136Xe exposure, the expected sensitivity is T0νββ1/2>2.1×1025yrat90%CL, corresponding to an effective Majorana mass range of ⟨mββ⟩

16. Selección de películas poliméricas para su empleo con lechuga en atmósfera modificada

Abstract

El uso combinado de bajas temperaturas y de atmósfera modificada facilita el almacenamiento de frutas y hortalizas mínimamente procesadas permitiendo mantener la calidad comercial por más tiempo. El objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar el comportamiento postcosecha de lechuga mantecosa en atmósfera modificada pasiva utilizando diferentes películas poliméricas como material de envase. Las etapas del procesado fueron: lavado con agua clorinada (200 ppm), separación de las hojas, oreado del material y envasado en tres tipos de bolsas de distinta permeabilidad a los gases (SM250Y, PD-961 y PD-900). La conservación se realizó cámara a 4ºC durante 10 días. Durante el almacenamiento se realizaron mediciones de pérdida de peso, color, consumo de O2, producción de CO2 y etileno y calidad visual. El uso de películas plásticas reduce la actividad metabólica por disminución de O2 y el incremento de CO2, así como se minimiza la pérdida de agua, favoreciendo el mantenimiento de la calidad del producto. Los materiales de envase PD-961 y PD- 900 preservaron la calidad comercial de la lechuga a pesar de la diferente permeabilidad de los gases. No obstante, se recomienda el uso de las películas PD-961 por ser un material más permeable al etileno, hormona que acelera el deterioro del producto, y por su menor opacidad que PD 900 permite una mejor observación del producto por el consumidor

17. Muon excess in ultra-high energy inclined EAS according to the NEVOD-DECOR data

Abstract

Data of the NEVOD-DECOR experiment on investigations of inclined cosmic ray muon bundles for a long time period (May 2012 – March 2021) are presented. Their comparison with the results of calculations based on simulations of EAS muon component allows one to study the behavior of the energy spectrum and mass composition of primary cosmic rays and/or to check the validity of hadron interaction models in a wide energy range from about 10^16 to more than 10^18 eV. The analysis showed that the observed intensity of muon bundles at primary particle energies of about 10^18 eV and higher can be compatible with the expectation only under the assumption of an extremely heavy mass composition of cosmic rays. This conclusion is consistent with data of a number of other experiments investigating the muon component of air showers at ultra-high energies. On the contrary, measurements of the depth of the shower maximum in the atmosphere (Xmax) in the experiments using air fluorescence technique favor a light mass composition of primary cosmic rays at these energies. This contradiction (so-called “muon puzzle”) cannot be resolved without serious changes of the existing hadron interaction models.

Abstract

Muon diagnostics is a technique for remote monitoring of active processes in the heliosphere and the magnetosphere of the Earth based on the analysis of angular variations of muon flux simultaneously detected from all directions of the upper hemisphere. To carry out muon diagnostics, special detectors – muon hodoscopes – which can detect muons from any direction with good angular resolution in real-time mode are required. We discuss approaches to data analysis and the results of studies of various extra-terrestrial processes detected by means of the wide aperture URAGAN muon hodoscope.

Abstract

The XENON1T liquid xenon time projection chamber is the most sensitive detector built to date for the measurement of direct interactions of weakly interacting massive particles with normal matter. The data acquisition system (DAQ) is constructed from commercial, open source, and custom components to digitize signals from the detector and store them for later analysis. The system achieves an extremely low signal threshold below a tenth of a photoelectron using a parallelized readout with the global trigger deferred to a later, software stage. The event identification is based on MongoDB database queries and has over 97% efficiency at recognizing interactions at the analysis energy threshold. A readout bandwidth over 300 MB/s is reached in calibration modes and is further expandable via parallelization. Abstract

The Experimental complex (EC) NEVOD includes a number of unique experimental facilities for studies of main components of cosmic rays on the Earth's surface. The complex is used for basic research of CR flux characteristics and their interactions in the energy range 1015 – 1019 eV. To extend the experimental capabilities nowadays new large-scale detectors are being deployed around the EC NEVOD: an array for the EAS registration (NEVOD-EAS), a detector of atmospheric neutrons (URAN) and a large-area coordinate-tracking detector (TREK). The description of experimental capabilities of the complex is given, and first results of simultaneous detection of various EAS components are discussed.

Abstract

The description of high-energy hadronic interactions plays an important role in the (astrophysical) interpretation of air shower data. The parameter space important for the development of air showers (energy and kinematical range) extends well beyond todays accelerator capabilities. Therefore, accurate measurements of air showers are used to constrain modern models to describe high-energy hadronic interactions. The results obtained are complementary to information gained at accelerators and add to our understanding of high-energy hadronic interactions.

Abstract

KASCADE-Grande is an extensive air-shower experiment located at Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe, Germany. Main parts of the experiment are the Grande array spread over an area of 700 × 700 m 2 , the original KASCADE array covering 200 × 200 m 2 with unshielded and shielded detectors, and additional muon tracking devices. This multi-detector system allows to investigate the energy spectrum, composition, and anisotropies of cosmic rays in the energy range up to 1 EeV. LOPES is co-located at the same site to measure radio pulses from extensive air showers in coincidence with KASCADE-Grande. It consists of 30 digital antennas operated in different geometrical configurations. Read out is performed at high bandwidths and rate data processing with the aim to calibrate the emitted signal in the primary energy range of 10 16 − 10 18 eV by making use of reconstructed air-shower observables of KASCADE-Grande. An overview on the performance of both experiments will be given and recent analysis results be reported.

Abstract

Preliminary results of muon bundle studies in of zenith angle range θ ≥ 60° and multiplicities by means of coordinate detector DECOR are discussed. Estimates of muon bundle characteristics at large zenith angles obtained with CORSIKA code demonstrate the ability of such not large detector as NEVOD-DECOR complex to perform cosmic ray studies in a very wide energy range from 1011 eV to more than 1017 eV.

Experimental data on atmospheric muons obtained with Russian-Italian coordinate detector DECOR have been processed by means of method of wavelet transformation. Results of analysis exhibit time perturbations caused by effects like Forbush decreases and allow to determine not only their periods but also moments of their appearance.

Abstract

Data on near-horizontal muons obtained with experimental complex NEVOD-DECOR are analyzed. More than 1.5 × 103 atmospheric muons scattered into upper hemisphere with energy above 7 GeV were registered. Calculations show that the main process forming albedo muon flux near horizon is multiple Coulomb scattering.

Abstract

Since neutrinos and gamma-rays productions are often associated in many astrophysical processes, the detection of neutrinos in correlation with γ-ray bursts (GRBs) could be a very important step towards the discovery of the sources of these events. A search for low-energy neutrinos of all flavours in correlation with ≈ 200 γ-ray bursts detected by BATSE aboard the Compton Observatory has been performed by the LSD (Liquid-Scintillator Detector) neutrino telescope. This kind of telescope, differently from the water Cerenkov detectors, is also sensitive to νμ, τ and\(\bar \nu _{\mu , \tau } \) fluxes, through the charged-and neutral-current interactions of neutrinos with carbon nuclei. No νe, μ, τ or\(\bar \nu _{e,\mu ,\tau } \) candidate has been detected by LSD during the time interval in which BATSE detected 90% of the photon flux for any of the GRBs analysed. The corresponding upper limits to the neutrino fluxes, summed over 197 GRBs, are:\(F(\bar \nu _e ) \leqslant 1.5 \cdot 10^{11} cm^{ - 2} \), 9≤Eν≤50 MeV,\(F(\bar \nu _e ) \leqslant 2.5 \cdot 10^{10} cm^{ - 2} \), 20≤Eν≤50 MeV,F(νe)≤5.1·1011 cm−2, 25≤Eν ≤50 MeV,F(νμ, τ)≤7.5·1012 cm−2, 20≤Eν≤100 MeV,\(F(\bar \nu _{\mu , \tau } ) \leqslant 7.9 \cdot 10^{12} cm^{ - 2} \), 20≤Eν≤100 MeV.

Abstract

Absolute multiple muon rates have been measured in the NUSEX detector at Mont Blanc during more than 6 years of data taking. We present here a comparison with the expected rates according to different current models of primary cosmeric ray composition in the energy range 1013–1017 eV. The predictions are based on a Monte Carlo simulation of the atmospheric cascade including the most recent accelerator results on the hadronic interactions.

Abstract

EAS-TOP is a detector of the extensive air showers that very high-energy cosmic rays (E 0≥1014eV) produce in the atmosphere. The array is located on top of the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory in central Italy; a subarray (11 modules of the e.m. detector) has been operating since the end of 1987. From such data the stability of the detector, and the accuracies in the determination of the arrival directions and in the reconstruction of the electron lateral distribution and of the shower size are derived. The results obtained on VHE-UHE γ-ray sources in the first months of operation are presented.

Abstract

Laboratory experiments searching for galactic dark matter particles scattering off nuclei have so far not been able to establish a discovery. We use data from the XENON100 experiment to search for dark matter interacting with electrons. With no evidence for a signal above the low background of our experiment, we exclude a variety of representative dark matter models that would induce electronic recoils. For axial-vector couplings to electrons, we exclude cross-sections above 6x10^(-35) cm^2 for particle masses of m_chi = 2 GeV/c^2. Independent of the dark matter halo, we exclude leptophilic models as explanation for the long-standing DAMA/LIBRA signal, such as couplings to electrons through axial-vector interactions at a 4.4 sigma confidence level, mirror dark matter at 3.6 sigma, and luminous dark matter at 4.6 sigma., 4 pages, 4 figures, with supporting online material

Abstract

A search for upward going stopping muon events has been performed using the NUSEX detector. The experimental flux, (1.31 http://grid.ct.infn.it/notes/pdf/LNF-91-028%28P%29.pdf 0.46) 10^13 μ/cm^2 sr, is in good agreement with the theoretical expectations of muon production from atmospheric neutrinos. The experimental limit on the flux of muons produced by high energy neutrinos from the Sun is compared to the expectations based on cold dark matter hypothesis, and mass limits on different candidates are set.

Abstract

In this paper we present the results of a search for GeV Gamma Ray Bursts made by the INCA experiment during the first 9 months of operation. INCA, an air shower array located at Mount Chacaltaya (Bolivia) at 5200 m a.s.l., has been searching for GRBs since December 1996. Up to August, 1997, 34 GRBs detected by BATSE occurred in the field of view of the experiment. For any burst, the counting rate of the array in the 2 hours interval around the burst trigger time has been studied. No significant excess has been observed. Assuming for the bursts a power low energy spectrum extending up to 1 TeV with a slope α=−2 and a duration of 10 s, the obtained 1 GeV-1 TeV energy fluence upper limits range from 7.9 10−5 erg cm−2 to 3.5 10−3 erg cm−2 depending on the event zenith angles.

Abstract

In order to correlate functional and biochemical parameters, frozen bovine sperm samples presenting diverse motility were studied. Specimens collected from four bulls (A, B, C and D) were graded according to motile spermatozoa percentage and vigour, regarding the sample from bull A as highest motility, those from bulls B and C of intermediate motility and that from bull D of low motility. In order to evaluate lipid peroxidation enhanced by the addition of sodium ascorbate and ferrous sulphate, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) were measured. Values were 0.34 +/- 0.18 and 4.95 +/- 0.31 nmol TBARS/10(8) spermatozoa for samples A and D, respectively. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity was 144 +/- 16.48 and 44 +/- 4.0 IU/10(10) spermatozoa for A and D, respectively, while intermediate values were recorded for samples B and C. The capability to undergo acrosome reaction induced by calcium ionophore A23187 was significantly lower for sample D, but differences were negligible for the remaining three samples inter se. Motile spermatozoa percentage correlated closely both with SOD activity (r = 0.92) and with TBARS production (r = -0.80), but not with acrosome reacted percentage (r = 0.65). From correlation data, it would be inferred that motility is not entirely indicative of sperm quality.

Abstract

The Large-Volume Detector (LVD) in the Gran Sasso underground Laboratory is a multipurpose detector consisting of a large volume of liquid scintillator (at present 562 tons are in data taking) interleaved with limited-streamer tubes. Several physical problems are investigated with LVD, the major being the search for neutrino bursts from gravitational stellar collapses in our Galaxy. In this paper we discuss some results on cosmic neutrinos and cosmic-ray muons obtained with the first of the five towers of LVD (operational since June 1992) and part of the second tower (operational since June 1994). The results of the search for supernovae neutrinos show that LVD is a neutrino observatory able to detect neutrinos of different flavours from gravitational stellar collapses in all our Galaxy, over a wide range of burst durations. Indeed, the carbon-based liquid-scintillator target gives a unique possibility to directly detect neutral- and charged-currents neutrino interactions with a very good signature. This characteristic of LVD allows us to make an indirect estimate of the neutrino rest mass and of neutrino oscillations from supernovae in our Galaxy. No evidence for burst candidates has been found in the data recorded from June 1992 to March 1995, for a total live time of 682 days and a total exposure of 613 tons per year. We present the results of a time coincidence analysis between low-energy signals, eventually due to neutrinos of different flavours, and γ-ray bursts (GRBs) detected by the BATSE experiment. This search covers the period from June 1993 to March 1995, during which 41 GRBs have been selected from the BATSE data. Since no excess of events in LVD has been found, upper limits on the neutrino fluxes are reported for (νe, p), and for neutral- and charged-currents neutrino interactions of different flavours with the C-nuclei of the scintillator. The muon intensity as a function of slant depth is presented. These measurements, obtained during a live time period of 11.556 hours, cover a slant depths range from about 3000 to about 20 000 hg/cm2 of standard rock and extend over five decades of intensity. An interesting result is that the muon flux is independent of slant depth beyond a depth of about 14 000 hg/cm2 of standard rock, and corresponds to near horizontal muons. This is direct evidence that this flux is due to atmospheric neutrinos interacting in the rock surrounding LVD.

Abstract

An air shower array on top of the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory (GSL) can give valuable information in the field of high-energy cosmic-ray physics. We discuss the performances of a specific apparatus (EAS-TOP) operating both in coincidence with the underground array (i.e. for measuring the total primary energy of multimuon events) and as an autonomous air shower detector (for studies of ultra-high-energy gamma-ray astronomy, cosmic-ray anisotropies and primary composition).

Abstract

We report here the preliminary results of a search for magnetic monopoles, made with the Liquid Scintillation Detector (LSD) of the Mont Blanc Laboratory, at the depth of 5200 hg/cm2 underground. We discuss the detection method and the sensitivity of the experiment to low-energy losses, as expected theoretically for monopoles with low velocity. Since no monopole has been detected we give the upper limit of their flux at Earth for 0 events at the 90% confidence level. This limitF≤6.6·10−14 poles cm−2s−1 sr−1 has been obtained after ∼5 months of running time given the large acceptance (SΩ=235 m2 sr) of the LSD experiment.

In this work we analyse the sources of background that can imitate a real antineutrino interaction in the Mont Blanc LSD detector. The sources are: fast neutrons from nuclear showers produced by muons in the rock, spontaneous fission of238U and the decay of products of thermal neutron capture by nuclei in the apparatus or in the surrounding rock.

Abstract

A 90 tons Liquid Scintillation Detector (LSD) is fully running since October 1984 in the Mont Blanc Laboratory, at a depth of 5200 hg/cm2 under ground. The detection of cosmic neutrinos of different origin is the main goal of this experiment. The detector is very well shielded against the local radioactivity and is extremely sensitive to detect low energy particles with a threshold of 5 MeV.

Abstract

International audience; Two-neutrino double electron capture (2νECEC) is a second-order weak-interaction process with a predicted half-life that surpasses the age of the Universe by many orders of magnitude1. Until now, indications of 2νECEC decays have only been seen for two isotopes2,3,4,5, 78Kr and 130Ba, and instruments with very low background levels are needed to detect them directly with high statistical significance6,7. The 2νECEC half-life is an important observable for nuclear structure models8,9,10,11,12,13,14 and its measurement represents a meaningful step in the search for neutrinoless double electron capture—the detection of which would establish the Majorana nature of the neutrino and would give access to the absolute neutrino mass15,16,17. Here we report the direct observation of 2νECEC in 124Xe with the XENON1T dark-matter detector. The significance of the signal is 4.4 standard deviations and the corresponding half-life of 1.8 × 1022 years (statistical uncertainty, 0.5 × 1022 years; systematic uncertainty, 0.1 × 1022 years) is the longest measured directly so far. This study demonstrates that the low background and large target mass of xenon-based dark-matter detectors make them well suited for measuring rare processes and highlights the broad physics reach of larger next-generation experiments18,19,20.

Abstract

We show that linearizing Extended Theories of Gravity, further gravitationalmodes emerge. Besides massless spin-2, also spin-0 and spin-2 massive and ghostfields have to be considered as soon as one is considering the full curvaturebudget of generic metric theories of gravity. Such additional modes give rise tofurther polarizations that could be of interest for direct detection by theforthcoming Advanced LIGO-VIRGO and other collaborations.

Abstract

We present the first results of searches for axions and axion-like-particles with the XENON100 experiment. The axion-electron coupling constant, $g_{Ae}$, has been tested by exploiting the axio-electric effect in liquid xenon. A profile likelihood analysis of 224.6 live days $\times$ 34 kg exposure has shown no evidence for a signal. By rejecting $g_{Ae}$, larger than $7.7 \times 10^{-12}$ (90% CL) in the solar axion search, we set the best limit to date on this coupling. In the frame of the DFSZ and KSVZ models, we exclude QCD axions heavier than 0.3 eV/c$^2$ and 80 eV/c$^2$, respectively. For axion-like-particles, under the assumption that they constitute the whole abundance of dark matter in our galaxy, we constrain $g_{Ae}$, to be lower than $1 \times 10^{-12}$ (90% CL) for masses between 5 and 10 keV/c$^2$.
