Abstract: We present a measurement of semi-inclusive spin asymmetries for positively and negatively charged hadrons from deep inelastic scattering of polarised muons on polarised protons and deuterons in the range $0.003$1 GeV$^2$. Compared to our previous publication on this subject, with the new data the statistical errors have been reduced by nearly a factor of two. From these asymmetries and our inclusive spin asymmetries we determine the polarised quark distributions of valence quarks and non-strange sea quarks at $Q^2$=10 GeV$^2$. The polarised $u$ valence quark distribution, $\Delta u_v(x)$, is positive and the polarisation increases with $x$. The polarised $d$ valence quark distribution, $\Delta d_v(x)$, is negative and the non-strange sea distribution, $\Delta \bar q(x)$, is consistent with zero over the measured range of $x$. We find for the first moments $\int_0^1 \Delta u_v(x) dx = 0.77 \pm 0.10 \pm 0.08$, $\int_0^1 \Delta d_v(x) dx = -0.52 \pm 0.14 \pm 0.09$ and $\int_0^1 \Delta \bar q(x) dx= 0.01 \pm 0.04 \pm 0.03$, where we assumed $\Delta \bar u(x) = \Delta \bar d(x)$. We also determine for the first time the second moments of the valence distributions $\int_0^1 x \Delta q_v(x) dx$., Comment: 17 pages

Abstract: We present a new measurement of the virtual photon proton asymmetry $A_1^{\rm p}$ from deep inelastic scattering of polarized muons on polarized protons in the kinematic range $0.0008 < x < 0.7$ and $0.2 < Q^{2} < 100$ GeV$^{2}$. With this, the statistical uncertainty of our measurement has improved by a factor of $2$ compared to our previous measurements. The spin-dependent structure function $g_{1}^{\rm p}$ is determined for the data with $Q^{2} > 1$ GeV$^{2}$. A perturbative QCD evolution in next-to-leading order is used to determine $g_1^{\rm p}(x)$ at a constant $Q^2$. At $Q^{2} = 10$ GeV$^{2}$ we find, in the measured range, $\int_{0.003}^{0.7} g_{1}^{\rm p}(x){\rm d}x = 0.139 \pm 0.006~({\rm stat})\pm 0.008~({\rm syst)} \pm 0.006~({\rm evol})$. The value of the first moment $\Gamma_{1}^{\rm p} = \int_{0}^{1} g_{1}^{\rm p}(x){\rm d}x$ of $g_{1}^{\rm p}$ depends on the approach used to describe the behaviour of $g_{1}^{\rm p}$ at low $x$. We find that the Ellis-Jaffe sum rule is violated. With our published result for $\Gamma_{1}^{\rm d}$ we confirm the Bjorken sum rule with an accuracy of $\approx 15\%$ at the one standard deviation level.

Abstract: We present a new measurement of the spin-dependent structure function $g_{1}^{\rm d}$ of the deuteron from deep inelastic scattering of 190 GeV polarized muons on polarized deuterons. The results are combined with our previous measurements of $g_{1}^{\rm d}$. A perturbative QCD evolution in next-to-leading order is used to compute $g_{1}^{\rm d}(x)$ at a constant $Q^{2}$. At $Q^{2} = 10$ GeV$^{2}$, we obtain a first moment $\Gamma_{1}^{\rm d} = \int_{0}^{1} g_{1}^{\rm d}{\rm d}x = 0.041 \pm 0.008$, a flavour-singlet axial charge of the nucleon $a_{0} = 0.30 \pm 0.08$, and an axial charge of the strange quark $a_{s} = -0.09 \pm 0.03$. Using our earlier determination of $\Gamma_{1}^{\rm p}$, we obtain $\Gamma_1^{\rm p} - \Gamma_1^{\rm n} = 0.183 \pm 0.035$ at $Q^2 = 10\,\mbox{GeV}^2$. This result is in agreement with the Bjorken sum rule which predicts $\Gamma_1^{\rm p} - \Gamma_1^{\rm n} = 0.186 \pm 0.002$ at the same $Q^2$.

Abstract: A muon beam polarimeter has been built for the SMC experiment at the CERN SPS, for muon energies of 100 to 200 GeV. The beam polarisation is determined from the energy spectrum of positrons from the decay μ+ → e+ νcνμ. A polarisation of - 0.82 is measured with a relative systematic accuracy of 3%.

Abstract: The project "Dubna Electron Synchrotron" (DELSY) is aimed to construct a synchrotron radiation source of the 3d generation at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research. The DELSY synchrotron radiation source will be constructed on the base of the accelerator facility of the Institute for Nuclear Physics and High Energy Physics (NIKHEF), Amsterdam, the Netherlands. This accelerator facility consists of a linear electron accelerator MEA (Medium Energy Accelerator) for the electron energy of 700 MeV and the electron storage ring AmPS (Amsterdam Pulse Stretcher) for the maximum electron energy of 900 MeV at the circulating beam current of 200 mA. The DELSY storage ring is supposed to be constructed with the use of the "Amsterdam Pulse Stretcher" (AmPS) [1] storage ring the focusing system of which will be essentially modified: the ring circumference will be approximately 1.5 times smaller, the electron energy will be increased up to 1.2 GeV and the focusing strength will be enhanced. These measures will allow obtaining the beam emittance at least ten times smaller which subsequently increases the synchrotron radiation brilliance by several orders of magnitude. The rigging of the DELSY ring with the insertion devices — the superconducting wiggler with the magnetic field of 10 T and the so-called "vacuum hybrid miniundulator" is the principle feature of the new synchrotron radiation source. Both devices developed by Budker INP, Novosibirsk, will allow to enrich the DELSY characteristics as the synchrotron radiation source expanding its radiation spectrum in the region of the hard X-rays and increasing its brilliance up to 3 ⋅10 18

Abstract: The muon-proton and muon-deuteron inclusive deep inelastic scattering cross sections were measured in the kinematic range 0.002 < x < 0.60 and 0.5 < Q(2) < 75 GeV2 at incident muon energies of 90, 120, 200 and 280 GeV. These results are based on the full data set collected by the New Muon Collaboration, including the data taken with a small angle trigger. The extracted values of the structure functions F-2(p) and F-2(d) are in good agreement with those from other experiments. The data cover a sufficient range of y to allow the determination of the ratio of the longitudinally to transversely polarised virtual photon absorption cross sections, R = sigma(L)/sigma(T), for 0.002 < x < 0.12. The values of R are compatible with a perturbative QCD prediction; they agree with earlier measurements and extend to smaller x.

Abstract: The Q(2) dependence of the structure function ratio F-2(Sn)/F-2(C) for 0.01 < x < 0.75 and 1 < Q(2) < 140 GeV2 is reported. For x < 0.1 the size of shadowing decreases linearly with In Q(2) and the maximum rate is about 0.04 at x = 0.01. The rate decreases with x and is compatible with zero for x greater than or equal to 0.1. The difference R(Sn) - R(C), where R is the ratio of longitudinally to transversely polarised virtual photon absorption cross sections, is also given. No dependence on x is seen and the average value is 0.040 +/- 0.021 (stat.) +/- 0.026 (syst.) at a mean Q(2) of 10 GeV2.

Abstract: We present a re-evaluation of the structure function ratios F2(He)/F2(D), F2(C)/F2(D) and F2(Ca)/F2(D) measured in deep inelastic muon-nucleus scattering at an incident muon momentum of 200 GeV. We also present the ratios F2(C)/F2(Li), F2(Ca)/F2(Li) and F2(Ca)/F2(C) measured at 90 GeV. The results are based on data already published by NMC; the main difference in the analysis is a correction for the masses of the deuterium targets and an improvement in the radiative corrections. The kinematic range covered is 0.0035 < x < 0.65, 0.5 < Q~2

Abstract: Exclusive ϱ 0 and φ muoproduction on deuterium, carbon and calcium has been studied in the kinematic range 2 Q 2 2 and 40 Q 2 dependence of the cross sections, the transverse momentum distributions for the vector mesons, the decay angular distributions and, in the case of the ϱ 0 , nuclear effects. The data for 0 production are compatible with a diffractive mechanism. The distinct features of φ production are a smaller cross section and less steep p t 2 distributions than those for the 0 mesons.

Abstract: Quasielastic production of J / ψ mesons has been measured in muon interactions with hydrogen, deuterium, carbon and tin targets at incident muon energies of 200 and 280 GeV. The hydrogen and deuterium data were used to study the transverse momentum distribution of the J / ψ 's. These data have been analysed together with previously published ϱ 0 data in the framework of the vector meson dominance model. The radii of the Jψ and the ϱ 0 as well as the total J / ψ - N and ϱ 0 - N cross sections were deduced. From the tin and carbon data the ratio of the quasielastic J / ψ production cross sections, R qe (Sn/C), has been extracted and found to be less than unity. In the Glauber approach this suppression can be related to the J / ψ absorption probability in nuclei. The suppression is also compared to those predicted by various colour transparency models.

Abstract: A muon beam polarimeter was built for the SMC experiment at the CERN SPS, for beam energies of 100 and 190 GeV. The beam polarisation is determined from the asymmetry in the elastic scattering off the polarised electrons of a ferromagnetic target whose magnetisation is periodically reversed. At muon energies of 100 and 190 GeV the measured polarisation is P-mu = -0.80 +/- 0.03 (stat.) +/- 0.02 (syst.) and P-mu = - 0.797 +/- 0.011 (stat.) +/- 0.012 (syst.), respectively. These results agree with measurements of the beam polarisation using a shape analysis of the decay positron energy spectrum. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: We report on the first measurement of the spin-dependent structure function g1d of the deuteron in the deep inelastic scattering of polarised muons off polarised deuterons, in the kinematical range 0.006222. The first moment, Γ1d=sh{phonetic}01 g1d dx=0.023±0.020 (stat.) ± 0.015 (syst.), is smaller than the prediction of the Ellis-Jaffe sum rules. Using earlier measurements of g1p, we infer the first moment of the spin-dependent neutron structure function g1n. The difference Γ1p-Γ1n=0.20 ±0.05 (stat.) ± 0.04 (syst.) agrees with the prediction of the Bjorken sum rule, Γ1p-Γ1n=0.191 ±0.002.

Abstract: We present the results of the spin asymmetries $A_1$ of the proton and the deuteron in the kinematic region extending down to $x=6\cdot 10^{-5}$ and $Q^2=0.01$ GeV$^2$. The data were taken with a dedicated low $x$ trigger, which required hadron detection in addition to the scattered muon, so as to reduce the background at low $x$. The results complement our previous measurements and the two sets are consistent in the overlap region. No sig\-ni\-fi\-cant spin effects are found in the newly explored region.

Abstract: We present results on J/psi production in muon interactions with tin and carbon targets at incident muon energies of 200 and 280 GeV. The ratio of cross sections per nucleon for J/psi production on tin and carbon, R(Sn/C), is studied as a function of p(T)2, z and x. We find an enhancement for coherent J/psi production R(coh)(Sn/C) = 1.54 +/- 0.07, a suppression for quasielastic production R(qe)(Sn/C) = 0.79 +/- 0.06 and for inelastic production R(in)(Sn/C) = 1.13 +/- 0.08. The inelastic cross section ratio can be interpreted within the Colour Singlet model as an enhancement ot the gluon distribution in tin with respect to that in carbon. The dependence of the ratio on z and p(T)2 can explain the discrepancy between the results obtained in previous experiments.

Abstract: Arrays of limited streamer tubes of the Iarocci type were deployed in our experiment at CERN as part of a forward muon detector system with provisions for the beam to pass through the center of each panel in the array. A total of 16 4 m x 4 m panels were assembled with inductive readout strips on both sides of each panel. An active feedback system. was deployed to regulate the high voltage to the streamer tubes to insure a constant efficiency for minimum ionizing particles. The arrays were operated in this environment for over five years of data taking. Streamer tube track-reconstruction efficiencies and tube replacement rates are reported. Abstract: The polarized target of the Spin Muon Collaboration at CERN was used for deep inelastic muon scattering experiments during 1993-1996 with a polarized muon beam to investigate the spin structure of the nucleon. Most of the experiments were carried out with longitudinal target polarization and 190 GeV muons, and some were done with transverse polarization and 100 GeV muons. Protons as well as deuterons were polarized by dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) in three kinds of solid materials - butanol, ammonia, and deuterated butanol - with maximum degrees of polarization of 94%, 91% and 60%, respectively. Considerable attention was paid to the accuracies of the NMR polarization measurements and their analyses, the accuracies achieved were between 2.0% and 3.2%. The SMC target system with two cells of opposite polarizations, each cell 65 cm long and 5 cm in diameter, constitutes the largest polarized target system ever built and facilitates accurate spin asymmetry measurements. Abstract: We present a next-to-leading order QCD analysis of the presently available data on the spin structure function [Formula Presented] including the final data from the Spin Muon Collaboration. We present results for the first moments of the proton, deuteron, and neutron structure functions, and determine singlet and nonsinglet parton distributions in two factorization schemes. We also test the Bjorken sum rule and find agreement with the theoretical prediction at the level of 10%. © 1998 The American Physical Society.

Abstract: The 1996 data taking of the SMC experiment used polarized protons to measure the spin-dependent structure function g(1) of the proton. Three liters of solid granular ammonia were irradiated at the Bonn electron linac in order to create the paramagnetic radicals which are needed for polarizing the protons. Proton polarizations of +/- (90 +/- 2.5)% were routinely reached. An analysis based on a theoretical line shape for spin-1. systems with large quadrupolar broadening was developed which allowed the nitrogen polarization in the ammonia to be determined with a 10% relative error. The measured quadrupolar coupling constant of N-14 agrees well with earlier extrapolated values. The polarization of the nitrogen nuclei was measured as a function of the proton polarization in order to provide a test of the equal spin temperature (EST) hypothesis. It was found to be closely valid under the dynamic nuclear polarization conditions with which the protons are polarized. Large deviations from EST could be induced by cross relaxing the proton and nitrogen spin systems at low fields. Nitrogen polarizations up to 40% were reached by these means. Abstract: An analytic model of the deuteron absorption function has been developed and is compared to experimental NMR signals of deuterated butanol obtained at the SMC experiment in order to determine the deuteron polarization. The absorption function model includes dipolar broadening and a frequency-dependent treatment of the intensity factors. The high-precision TE signal data available are used to adjust the model for Q-meter distortions and dispersion effects. Once the Q-meter adjustment is made, the enhanced polarizations determined by the asymmetry and TE-calibration methods compare well within the accuracy of each method. In analyzing the NMR signals, the quadrupolar coupling constants could be determined for both the CD and the OD bonds of deuterated butanol.

Abstract: We present a new measurement of the spin-dependent structure function g 1 d of the deuteron in deep inelastic scattering of 190 GeV polarised muons on polarised deuterons, in the kinematic range 0.003 x 2 Q 2 2 . This structure function is found to be negative at small x . The first moment Γ 1 d =∫ 0 1 g 1 d d x evaluated at Q 0 2 = 10 GeV 2 is 0.034 ± 0.009 (stat.) ± 0.006 (syst.). This value is below the Ellis-Jaffe sum rule prediction by three standard deviations. Using our earlier determination of Γ 1 p , we obtain Γ 1 p − Γ 1 n = 0.199 ± 0.038 which agrees with the Bjorken sum rule.

Abstract: We analyse the proton, deuteron and neutron spin dependent structure functions at fixed $Q^{2}$ = 5 GeV$^{2}$. The experimental asymmetries for the proton, neutron and deuteron are compared and found to be consistent. The first moment of the neutron structure function is evaluated using all available data. We find that the Bjorken sum rule is confirmed within an experimental uncertainty of 17%. The quark spin contribution to the nucleon spin is small, and the strange quark spin content is different from zero.

Abstract: The 10-probe NMR system for measuring the polarization in the deuterated butanol target of the Spin Muon Collaboration is presented. It is calibrated by determining the integrated spectrum in thermal equilibrium at 1 K. Thermal stabilization and control of electromagnetic interference were effective in reducing drift and electronic noise, so that high quality thermal equilibrium signals were obtained. The calibration constant was determined with a reproducibility of 2%. Systematic effects of circuit drift and of the magnetic field shift have been studied. The resulting 4.4% uncertainty of the calibration dominates the 5% overall error on the target polarization value which was typically 0.45.

Abstract: We report a large enhancement of 1.7 in deuteron polarization up to values of 0.6 due to frequency modulation of the polarizing microwaves in a two liters polarized target using the method of dynamic nuclear polarization. This target was used during a deep inelastic polarized muon-deuteron scattering experiment at CERN. Measurements of the electron paramagnetic resonance absorption spectra show that frequency modulation gives rise to additional microwave absorption in the spectral wings. Although these results are not understood theoretically, they may provide a useful testing ground for the deeper understanding of dynamic nuclear polarization., 10 pages, including the figures coming in uuencoded compressed tar files in poltar.uu, which also brings cernart.sty and crna12.sty files needed

Abstract: The Q2 dependence of the structure functions F2p and F2d recently measured by the NMC is compared with the predictions of perturbative QCD at next-to-leading order. Good agreement is observed, leading to accurate determinations of the quark and gluon distributions in the range 0.008 ⩽ × ⩽ 0.5. The strong coupling constant is measured from the low x data; the result agrees with previous determinations.

Abstract: The structure functions F2p and F2d measured by deep inelastic muon scattering at incident energies of 90 and 280 GeV are presented. These measurements cover a large kinematic range, 0.006 less-than-or-equal-to x less-than-or-equal-to 0.6 and 0.5 less-than-or-equal-to Q2 less-than-or-equal-to 55 GeV2, and include the first precise data at small x, where large scaling violations are observed. The data agree with earlier results from SLAC and BCDMS but exhibit differences with respect to those of EMC-NA2. Extrapolations to small x of recent phenomenological parton distributions are shown to disagree with the present results.

Abstract: We have studied transverse momentum distributions for exclusive rho(0) muoproduction on protons and heavier nuclei at 2 < Q2 < 25 GeV2. The Q2 dependence of the slopes of the p(t)2 and t' distributions is discussed. The influence of the non-exclusive background is investigated. The p(t)2-slope for exclusive events is 4.3 +/- 0.6 +/- 0.7 GeV-2 at large Q2. The p(t)2 spectra are much softer than inclusive p(t)2 spectra of leading hadrons produced in deep inelastic scattering.

Abstract: The g-factor and mean life of the 5 2 + 1 state at 3.85 MeV in 13C have been determined by a recoil-into-vacuum plunger measurement. The state was populated by the 2H(12C, p) reaction at E = 15.0 MeV. The analysis of the time-differential deorientation effect on the p-γ angular correlation leads to a g-factor of ¦g¦ = 0.558 ± 0.015 . For the mean lifetime a value of τ = 12.2 ± 0.4ps is obtained.

Abstract: An electron-scattering facility is describes that received low-energy electron beams with E0 ≦ 140 MeV from the 500 MeV medium energy accelerator. It is equipped with a 180° scattering system with a relatively large solid angle (2.9 msr) and a broad momentum acceptance. Electrons scattered between 177° and 183° can be detected with a 19-channel overlapping-scintillator system placed in the focal plane of a magic-angle spectrometer. Various test results are shown to demonstrate the performance of the system.

Abstract: Elastic magnetic electron scattering from 19F was measured at 154° and 180°. The large momentum transfer range covered (q = 0.4–2.8 fm−1) allowed us to perform a model-independent analysis of the magnetic dipole form factor. It indicates the presence of strong configuration mixing. Shell-model calculations in the full 2s1d configuration space are unable to account for the behaviour of the experimental data which exhibit an intermediate form factor maximum. A large-basis shell-model calculation using all orbits up to the 1f 7 2 shell produces such a maximum, as does a core-polarization calculation starting from shell-model wave functions in the full 2s1d space. In both cases excitations from the 1s to the 2s shell are mainly responsible for the appearance of the intermediate maximum. Non-nucleonic degrees of freedom do not disturb this conclusion since they yield only small corrections to the form factor.

Abstract: The pionic 2p→1s transition has been observed in Mg. For the strong interaction monopole shift a value has been measured of ϵ 0 (1s)=−81.6±0.6 keV with respect to the point Coulomb energy, in agreement with standard optical potential predictions. The observed strong interaction absorption width is Γ 0 (1s)=17.2±1.6 keV, which is about a factor of 1.5 smaller than expected from presently available models. This measurement confirms the trend of “anomalously” small strong interaction widths for deeply bound pionic states already observed in heavier elements.

Abstract: Spins, parities and transition probabilities of levels in 32P at Ex > 3.5 MeV have been determined with the 29Si(α, pγ)32P reaction at bombarding energies of Eα = 12.80, 12.93 and 16.30 MeV. Proton-gamma angular correlation experiments and DSA lifetime measurements lead to six unambiguous spin assignments and to many spin limitations. The measured mixing and branching ratios yield many transition strengths for dipole and electric quadrupole transitions. Five, sofar unknown, energy levels are reported. A doublet at 4.03 MeV excitation energy and a high-spin state (Ex = 4.27 MeV; Jπ = 5−) were observed. Shell-model predictions have been compared to the present experimental results.

47. Transient field measurements of g-factors for 24Mg AND 26Mg

Abstract: The g -factors of the first-excited J π = 2 + states of 24 Mg and 26 Mg have been measured with the ion-implantation perturbed angular correlation technique (IMPAC). The precession of the spins of nuclei recoiling into a magnetized iron backing is predominantly caused by the transient magnetic field for these very light and short-lived ( τ m ≈ 1 ps) nuclei. The transient field, which attains a value of 200 T for the Mg isotopes, is present only during the slowing-down of the recoiling nucleus and results in average precession angles of about 1.5 mrad. The experimental results are treated in the framework of the transient field theory of Lindhard and Winther. This yields g -factors of g = +0.42 b ± 0.09 and g = +1.3 ± 0.3 for 24 Mg and 26 Mg, respectively. The results are compared with theoretical predictions and for 24 Mg also with a recent time-differential deorientation experiment.

48. Spectroscopy of 27Si with the 24Mg(α, nγ)27Si reaction

Abstract: Neutron-γ angular correlation and lifetime measurements with the 24 Mg(α, nγ) 27 Si reaction were performed at bombarding energies of 12.60, 12.90, 15.45 and 16.35 MeV. Spins and parities for the E x = 0.96, 2.16, 2.91, 4.45 and 5.28 MeV levels of 27 Si were found as 3 2 + , 7 2 + , 9 2 + , 11 2 + and ( 7 2 , 11 2 ) + , respectively. Mixing ratios of γ-ray transitions, γ-ray decay and excitation energies for some levels below 5.4 MeV have also been determined. For the mirror pair 27 Si- 27 Al there is now a one-to-one correspondence for the lowest sixteen states. The results are compared with shell-model predictions.

49. Transient field g-factor measurements for the 1+ AND 1+ states in 31P

Abstract: Transient field integral precession measurements have been performed on the first two excited states of 31 P with the IMPAC technique on recoil into magnetized iron. The results were analyzed with an empirical parametrization of the transient magnetic field for light nuclei. This yields g -factors of g( 3 2 + ) = +0.20±0.05 and g( 5 2 + ) = +1.13±0.18 for the first and second excited state, respectively. These results are compared with calculations, which reproduce the measured values rather well.

50. Scaling of the transient magnetic field with the polarization density of the host

Abstract: The transient magnetic field strength has been determined accurately for 28Si(2~) at an initial recoil velocity of vi = 1.7 vo (vo = c/137) in magnetized Fe, Co, Ni and Gd. The first-excited state of 28Si was produced with the 28Si(~,~') reaction at E~ = 7.50 MeV. Time-integral rotations of the ~-u angular correlation were measured, which led to transient-field strengths for 2esi in the four ferromagnetic hosts. These strengths were found to scale with the polarization density of the host rather than with the number of polarized electrons per host atom.
