Abstract: International audience; Nuclear deubiquitinase BAP1 (BRCA1-associated protein 1) is a core component of multiprotein complexes that promote transcription by reversing the ubiquitination of histone 2A (H2A). BAP1 is a tumor suppressor whose germline loss-of-function variants predispose to cancer. To our knowledge, there are very rare examples of different germline variants in the same gene causing either a neurodevelopmental disorder (NDD) or a tumor predisposition syndrome. Here, we report a series of 11 de novo germline heterozygous missense BAP1 variants associated with a rare syndromic NDD. Functional analysis showed that most of the variants cannot rescue the consequences of BAP1 inactivation, suggesting a loss-of-function mechanism. In T cells isolated from two affected children, H2A deubiquitination was impaired. In matching peripheral blood mononuclear cells, histone H3 K27 acetylation ChIP-seq indicated that these BAP1 variants induced genome-wide chromatin state alterations, with enrichment for regulatory regions surrounding genes of the ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS). Altogether, these results define a clinical syndrome caused by rare germline missense BAP1 variants that alter chromatin remodeling through abnormal histone ubiquitination and lead to transcriptional dysregulation of developmental genes.

Abstract: Background and Aims: Data on the prevalence and characteristics of so-called rare HCV genotypes (GTs) in larger cohorts is limited. This study investigates the frequency of rare GT and resistance-associated substitutions and the efficacy of retreatment in a European cohort. Methods: A total of 129 patients with rare GT1-6 were included from the European resistance database. NS3, NS5A, and NS5B were sequenced and clinical parameters and retreatment efficacies were collected retrospectively. Results: Overall 1.5% (69/4,656) of direct-acting antiviral (DAA)-naive and 4.4% (60/1,376) of DAA-failure patients were infected with rare GT. Although rare GTs were almost equally distributed throughout GT1-6 in DAA-naive patients, we detected mainly rare GT4 (47%, 28/60 GT4; of these n = 17, subtype 4r) and GT3 (25%, 15/60 GT3, of these n = 8, subtype 3b) among DAA-failures. A total of 62% (37/60) of DAA failures had not responded to first-generation regimes and the majority was infected with rare GT4 (57%, 21/37). In contrast, among patients with failure to pangenotypic DAA regimens (38%, 23/60), infections with rare GT3 were overrepresented (57%, 13/23). Although NS5A RASs were uncommon in rare GT2, GT5a, and GT6, we observed combined RASs in rare GT1, GT3, and GT4 at positions 28, 30, 31, which can be considered as inherent. DAA failures with completed follow-up of retreatment, achieved a high SVR rate (94%, 45/48 modified intention-to-treat analysis; 92%, 45/49 intention-to-treat). Three patients with GT4f, 4r, or 3b, respectively, had virological treatment failure. Conclusions: In this European cohort, rare HCV GT were uncommon. Accumulation of specific rare GT in DAA-failure patients suggests reduced antiviral activities of DAA regimens. The limited global availability of pangenotypic regimens for first line therapy as well as multiple targeted regimens for retreatment could result in HCV elimination targets being delayed. Impact and implications: Data on the prevalence and characteristics of rare HCV genotypes (GT) in larger cohorts are still scarce. This study found low rates of rare HCV GTs among European HCV-infected patients. In direct-acting antiviral (DAA)-failure patients, rare GT3 subtypes accumulated after pangenotypic DAA treatment and rare GT4 after first generation DAA failure and viral resistance was detected at NS5A positions 28, 30, and 31. The limited global availability of pangenotypic DAA regimens for first line therapy as well as multiple targeted regimens for retreatment could result in HCV elimination targets being delayed.

Abstract: Following the path of the powerful evolution in many fields, engineering and medicine are converging to a healthy collaboration. Engineering, as a profession, is a practising one, and it is based on modifying and harnessing the three fundamental resources of the known world: information, energy and materials. Delivering solutions using the latest technologies and also trying to innovate for a better world, the continuous advancement of methods and many other improvements are focusing on helping and developing new ways to have better results. Medicine, with its many fields, is going hand in hand with this exponential growth. One method used in engineering to study and characterize different processes or phenomena is the acquisition and digital processing of data. With the development of computational techniques, it became possible to capture biological data, radiography and tomography being two examples that allow the reconstruction of images that are useful for diagnosis and establishment of treatment. In the following paper, methods known in the industry are presented and related to different procedures used in this collaboration between engineering and medicine.

Abstract: In this paper a new procedure to estimate the Thomsen parameters e and δ in VTI (Vertical Tranversely Isotropic) media is presented. The approach used in this work exploits the angles of the ray segments computed by the anisotropic ray tracing in travel time tomography using direct, reflected and refracted arrivals. The reliability of this technique is demonstrated by two synthetic examples related to transmission tomography (cross-hole) and reflection/refraction tomography.

Abstract: The statistics of the sum of random weights where the number of weights is Poisson distributed has important applications in nuclear physics, particle physics and astrophysics. Events are frequently weighted according to their acceptance or relevance to a certain type of reaction. The sum is described by the compound Poisson distribution (CPD) which is shortly reviewed. It is shown that the CPD can be approximated by a scaled Poisson distribution (SPD). The SPD is applied to parameter estimation in situations where the data are distorted by resolution effects. It performs considerably better than the normal approximation that is usually used. Abstract: The inclusive production cross sections of the charmed mesons D^0, D^+, D_s^+ and D^{*+} have been measured in interactions of 920 GeV protons on C, Ti, and W targets with the HERA-B detector at the HERA storage ring. Differential cross sections as a function of transverse momentum and Feynman's x variable are given for the central rapidity region and for transverse momenta up to $\pT=3.5$ GeV/$c$. Abstract: The inclusive production cross sections of the strange vector mesons K*0, K*0bar, and phi have been measured in interactions of 920 GeV protons with C, Ti, and W targets with the HERA-B detector at the HERA storage ring. Differential cross sections as a function of rapidity and transverse momentum have been measured in the central rapidity region and for transverse momenta up to pT=3.5 GeV/c. The atomic number dependence is parametrised as sigma(pA) = sigma(pN)*A**alpha, where sigma(pN) is the proton-nucleon cross section. Within the phase space accessible, alpha(K*0) = 0.86+/-0.03, alpha(K*0bar) = 0.87+/-0.03, and alpha(phi) = 0.96+/-0.02. The total proton-nucleon cross sections, determined by extrapolating the differential measurements to full phase space, are sigma(pN->K*0) = 5.06+/-0.54 mb, sigma(pN->K*0bar) = 4.02+/-0.45 mb, and sigma(pN->phi) = 1.17+/-0.11 mb. The Cronin effect is observed for the first time for vector mesons containing strange quarks; compared to the measurements of Cronin et al. for K+- mesons, the measured values of alpha for phi mesons coincide with those of K- mesons for all transverse momenta, while the enhancement for K*0 / K*0bar mesons is smaller., Comment: 19 pages, 17 figures, submitted to Eur Phys J C

Abstract: In this paper we describe the operation and performance of the HERA-B Outer Tracker, a 112674 channel system of planar drift tube layers. The performance of the HERA-B Outer Tracker system fullfilled all requirements for stable and efficient operation in a hadronic environment, thus confirming the adequacy of the honeycomb drift tube technology and of the front-end readout system. The detector was stably operated with a gas gain of 30000 in an Ar/CF4/CO2 (65:30:5) gas mixture, yielding a good efficiency for triggering and track reconstruction, larger than 95 % for tracks with momenta above 5 GeV/c. The hit resolution of the drift cells was 300 to 320 micrometers and the relative momentum resolution can be described as: sigma(p)/p (in %) = (1.61 +- 0.02) + (0.0051 +- 0.0006) p. Abstract: The mid-rapidity ( d σ p N / d y at y = 0 ) and total ( σ p N ) production cross sections of Jψ mesons are measured in proton–nucleus interactions. Data collected by the HERA-B experiment in interactions of 920 GeV / c protons with carbon, titanium and tungsten targets are used for this analysis. The Jψ mesons are reconstructed by their decay into lepton pairs. The total production cross section obtained is σ p N J / ψ = 663 ± 74 ± 46 nb / nucleon . In addition, our result is compared with previous measurements.

Abstract: A measurement of the polarization of Λ and Λ ¯ baryons produced in pC and pW collisions at s = 41.6 GeV has been performed with the HERA-B spectrometer. The measurements cover the kinematic range of 0.6 GeV / c p ⊥ 1.2 GeV / c in transverse momentum and − 0.15 x F 0.01 in Feynman-x. The polarization results from the two different targets agree within the statistical error. In the combined data set, the largest deviation from zero, + 0.054 ± 0.029 , is measured for x F ≲ − 0.07 . Zero polarization is expected at x F = 0 in the absence of nuclear effects. The polarization results for the Λ agree with a parametrization of previous measurements which were performed at positive x F values, where the Λ polarization is negative. Results of Λ ¯ polarization measurements are consistent with zero.

Abstract: We report on a search for the flavor-changing neutral current decay D 0 → μ + μ − using 50 × 10 6 events recorded with a dimuon trigger in interactions of 920 GeV protons with nuclei by the HERA-B experiment. We find no evidence for such decays and set a 90% confidence level upper limit on the branching fraction B ( D 0 → μ + μ − ) 2.0 × 10 − 6 .

Abstract: The Outer Tracking (OTR) system for the HERA-B detector at DESY consists of honeycomb drift tubes with cathodes folded from Pokalon-C foil, a soot-containing polycarbonate, operating with CF 4 -containing drift gas. The first prototypes, exposed to radiation in HERA-B, suffered radiation damage ascribed to the Malter effect (ignition of self-sustaining discharges). We present the results of investigations of cathode surface properties and include a semiquantitative discussion of the ion-layer formation process. The achieved understanding was important for the development of a radiation-hard detector.

Abstract: The Outer Tracker of the HERA-B experiment consists of drift tubes folded from gold-coated polycarbonate foils (honeycomb) and is operated with the gas mixture Ar/CF 4 /CO 2 . The choice of the materials and the drift gas was the result of an extended R&D program launched to avoid both anode aging (gain loss) and cathode aging (Malter effect). However, other aging effects were observed at high irradiation doses: rising conductivity of the wire-supporting strips and wire corrosion. In this paper, we show that these two aging effects could also be prevented by keeping water at a proper concentration (about 300 ppm ). In an attempt to interpret the test results, the production and reaction probability of molecular species produced via CF 4 dissociation in the avalanche are semi-quantitatively estimated.

Abstract: Inclusive differential cross sections dsigma(pA)/dx(F) and dsigma(pA)/dp(t)(2) for the production of K-S(0), Lambda, and (U) over bar particles are measured at HERA in proton-induced reactions on C, Al, Ti, and W targets. The incident beam energy is 920 GeV, corresponding to roots = 41.6 GeV in the proton-nucleon system. The ratios of differential cross sections dsigma(pA)(K-S(0))/dsigma(pA)(Lambda) and dsigma(pA)((U) over bar)/dsigma(pA) (Lambda) are measured to be 6.2 +/- 0.5 and 0.66 +/- 0.07, respectively, for x(F) approximate to -0.06. No significant dependence upon the target material is observed. Within errors, the slopes of the transverse momentum distributions da,Ald t also show no significant dependence upon the target material. The dependence of the extrapolated total cross sections sigma(pA) on the atomic mass A of the target material is discussed, and the deduced cross sections per nucleon sigma(pN) are compared with results obtained at other energies.

Abstract: Using data collected by the HERA-B experiment, we have measured the fraction of J\psi's produced via radiative chi_c decays in interactions of 920 GeV protons with carbon and titanium targets. We obtained R_{\chi_c} = 0.32 \pm 0.06_{stat} \pm 0.04_{sys} for the fraction of J\psi from chi_c decays averaged over proton-carbon and proton-titanium collisions. Abstract: Using the HERA-B detector, the b-bbar production cross section has been measured in 920 GeV proton collisions on carbon and titanium targets. The b-bbar production was tagged via inclusive bottom quark decays into J/psi, by exploiting the longitudinal separation of J/psi->ll decay vertices from the primary proton-nucleus interaction. Both $e^+e^-$ and $\mu^+\mu^-$ channels have been reconstructed and the combined analysis yields the cross section $\sigma(b \bar b) = 32 ^{+14}_{-12} (stat) ^{+6}_{-7} (sys) nb/nucleon$., Comment: 22 pages, 10 Postscript figures

Abstract: A high-reflection coating for 5.5 µm strain-compensated InGaAs/InAlAs quantum cascade lasers is described. Using a high-reflection coating on both facets of a laser cavity, a threshold current density of 0.5 kA/cm2 was observed at liquid-nitrogen temperature, whereas for an uncoated structure of comparable length the threshold current density was 1 kA/cm2. Laser action for a 2.1 mm long and 30 µm wide device with coated facets was achieved in pulsed mode up to the record high temperature of 470 K. A 2.5 mm long and 30 µm wide device with uncoated facets shows lasing action up to 440 K.

Abstract: Measurements of the kinematic distributions of $J/\psi$ mesons produced in $p-$C, $p-$Ti and $p-$W collisions at $\sqrt{s}=41.6 \mathrm{GeV}$ in the Feynman-$x$ region $-0.34 < x_{F} < 0.14$ and for transverse momentum up to $p_T = 5.4 \mathrm{GeV}/c$ are presented. The $x_F$ and $p_T$ dependencies of the nuclear suppression parameter, $\alpha$, are also given. The results are based on $2.4 \cdot 10^{5}$ $J/\psi$ mesons in both the $e^+ e^-$ and $\mu^{+}\mu^{-}$ decay channels. The data have been collected by the HERA-B experiment at the HERA proton ring of the DESY laboratory. The measurement explores the negative region of $x_{F}$ for the first time. The average value of $\alpha$ in the measured $x_{F}$ region is $0.981 \pm 0.015$. The data suggest that the strong nuclear suppression of $J/\psi$ production previously observed at high $x_F$ turns into an enhancement at negative $x_F$., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures, 6 tables

Abstract: A measurement of the ratio R_chic = (chic -> Jpsi + gam)/ Jpsi in pC, pTi and pW interactions at 920 GeV/c (sqrt{s}=41.6 GeV) in the Feynman-x range -0.35 < x_F(Jpsi) < 0.15 is presented. Both mu+mu- and e+e- Jpsi decay channels are observed with an overall statistics of about 15000 chic events, which is by far the largest available sample in pA collisions. The result is R_chic = 0.188+-0.013(st)(+0.024)(-0.022)(sys) averaged over the different materials, when no Jpsi and chic polarisations are considered. The chic_1 to chic_2 production ratio R_12 = R_chic1/R_chic2 is measured to be 1.02+-0.40, leading to a cross section ratio sigma(chic_1)/sigma(chic_2)=0.57+-0.23. The dependence of R_chic on the Feynman-x of the Jpsi, x_F(Jpsi), and its transverse momentum, p_T(Jpsi), is studied, as well as its dependence on the atomic number, A, of the target. For the first time, an extensive study of possible biases on R_chic and R_12 due to the dependence of acceptance on the polarization states of Jpsi and chic is performed. By varying the polarisation parameter, lambda(obs), of all produced Jpsi's by two sigma around the value measured by HERA-B, and considering the maximum variation due to the possible chic_1 and chic_2 polarisations, it is shown that R_chic could change by a factor between 1.02 and 1.21 and R_12 by a factor between 0.89 and 1.16., Comment: 19 pages, 7 figures

Abstract: A detailed description of an original method used to measure the luminosity accumulated by the HERA-B experiment for a data sample taken during the 2002-2003 HERA running period is reported. We show that, with this method, a total luminosity measurement can be achieved with a typical precision, including overall systematic uncertainties, at a level of 5% or better. We also report evidence for the detection of delta-rays generated in the target and comment on the possible use of such delta rays to measure luminosity., Comment: 24 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: Ratios of the Psi' over the J/psi production cross sections in the dilepton channel for C, Ti and W targets have been measured in 920 GeV proton-nucleus interactions with the HERA-B detector at the HERA storage ring. The Psi' and J/psi states were reconstructed in both the mu+mu- and the e+e- decay modes. The measurements covered the kinematic range -0.35 < x_F < 0.1 with transverse momentum p_T < 4.5 GeV/c. The Psi' to J/psi production ratio is almost constant in the covered x_F range and shows a slow increase with p_T. The angular dependence of the ratio has been used to measure the difference of the Psi' and J/psi polarization. All results for the muon and electron decay channels are in good agreement: their ratio, averaged over all events, is R_psi'(mu)/R_psi'(e)=1.00+-0.08+-0.04. This result constitutes a new, direct experimental constraint on the double ratio of branching fractions, (B'(mu)*B(e))/(B(mu)*B'(e)), of Psi' and J/psi in the two channels., Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures

Abstract: InP-based buried tunnel junction vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) incorporating a novel short-cavity (SC) design are presented. These highly single-mode devices emitting at 1.55 mum show record-high modulation bandwidths in excess of 15 GHz together with greatly enhanced intrinsic resonance frequencies. For elevated temperatures of 65degC and 80degC, 3-dB-modulation bandwidths beyond 13 and 10 GHz are demonstrated, respectively. Reasons for the improved modulation behavior are the smaller intrinsic damping due to reduced photon-lifetime, and the better heat-management of these SC-VCSELs.

Abstract: The mid-rapidity (dsigma_(pN)/dy at y=0) and total sigma_(pN) production cross sections of J/Psi mesons are measured in proton-nucleus interactions. Data collected by the HERA-B experiment in interactions of 920 GeV/c protons with carbon, titanium and tungsten targets are used for this analysis. The J/Psi mesons are reconstructed by their decay into lepton pairs. The total production cross section obtained is sigma_(pN)(J/Psi) = 663 +- 74 +- 46 nb/nucleon. In addition, our result is compared with previous measurements.

Abstract: A new measurement of the b-bbar production cross section in 920 GeV proton-nucleus collisions is presented by the HERA-B collaboration. The b-bbar production is tagged via inclusive bottom quark decays into J/psi mesons, by exploiting the longitudinal separation of J/psi->ll decay vertices from the primary proton-nucleus interaction point. Both e+e- and mu+mu- channels are reconstructed, for a total of 83 +- 12 inclusive b->J/psi X events found. The combined analysis yields a b-bbar to prompt J/psi cross section ratio of {frac{{Deltasigma(bbbar)}}{{Deltasigma_{jpsi}}}} = 0.032pm 0.005 stat pm 0.004 sys measured in the x_f acceptance (-0.35

Abstract: We report on a search for the flavor-changing neutral current decay $D^0 to mu^+mu^-$ using $50 times 10^6$ events recorded with a dimuon trigger in interactions of 920 GeV protons with nuclei by the HERA-B experiment. We find no evidence for such decays and set a 90% confidence level upper limit on the branching fraction $Br(D^0 to mu^+mu^-)

Abstract: We have searched for Theta^+(1540) and Xi^{--}(1862) pentaquark candidates in proton-induced reactions on C, Ti and W targets at mid-rapidity and sqrt{s} = 41.6 GeV. In 2x10^8 inelastic events we find no evidence for narrow (sigma~5 MeV) signals in the Theta^+ -> pK_s and Xi^{--} -> Xi^-pi^- channels; our 95% CL upper limits (UL) for the inclusive production cross section times branching fraction Bx(dsigma/dy)|_{y~0} are 3.7 and 2.5 microb/N. The UL of the yield ratio of [Theta^+ / Lambda(1520)] < 2.7% is significantly lower than model predictions. Our UL of [BxXi^{--} / Xi(1530)^0] < 4% is at variance with the results that have provided first evidence for the Xi^{--} signal.

Abstract: This paper presents the first report of a new MEMS contact element for microelectronic probing which can work with pitch sizes down to 30 μm, e.g. for memory line-on-center. With outer dimensions of 15 μm × 110 μm × 1.3 mm and 6 lamellae having a width of 10 μm, the system exerts a well defined contact force of 2 cN for an overtravel up to 70 μm, and thus competing with the mechanical limits of materials having extremely good mechanical properties.

Abstract: The Tile Calorimeter, covering the central region of the ATLAS experiment up to pseudorapidities of +/-1.7, is a sampling device built with scintillating tiles that alternate with iron plates. The light is collected in wave-length shifting (WLS) fibers and is read out with photomultipliers. In the characteristic geometry of this calorimeter the tiles lie in planes perpendicular to the beams, resulting in a very simple and modular mechanical and optical layout. This paper focuses on the procedures applied in the optical instrumentation of the calorimeter, which involved the assembly of about 460,000 scintillator tiles and 550,000 WLS fibers. The outcome is a hadronic calorimeter that meets the ATLAS performance requirements, as shown in this paper.

38. Disorder-induced intervalley scattering rates of AlxGa1-xAs by empirical pseudopotential calculations

Abstract: The probability rates for transitions between different states of the virtual crystal induced by a random distribution of the cations in the ternary alloy system AlxGa1-xAs are calculated in the Born approximation using local empirical pseudopotentials, which are consistent with newer Eg(x) data and always yield the same arsenic potential. Attention is paid to scattering between the inequivalent conduction band valleys at the high-symmetry points Gamma , X and L for material near the transition from direct to indirect band structure (cross-over), which is of importance for application to the dynamics of excited carriers in optical switching and memory devices. In order to describe the net rate of electron transfer between two valleys 1 and 2 by integral S12g1g2(f1-f2) dE, where g(E) and f(E) are the corresponding densities of states and distribution functions respectively, the scattering factor S12 and its energy dependence is obtained exactly by averaging individual transition matrix elements over all energetic resonant states belonging in each case to 1 or 2. In this connection we give for the first time theoretical values for the strength of disorder-induced X-L coupling and present energy-dependent time constants tau 12=(S12(g1+g2))-1, concerning the occupation-probability relaxation by disorder-induced intervalley scattering.

Abstract: Relations are derived that can be used to infer parameters in situations where theoretical predictions can be compared to experimental data only indirectly via Monte Carlo simulation. We consider least square and likelihood ratio fits. Parameter changes in the fitting procedures are performed by re-weighting Monte Carlo events. Formulas for goodness-of-fit tests based on the χ 2 and the likelihood ratio statistic are presented.

Abstract: We studied the fixation of a cementless titanium femoral prosthesis partially coated with hydroxyapatite ceramic (HAC) 10.4 months after implantation. Histomorphological investigation showed extensive new bone formation between the HAC coating and the bone bed; morphometry showed bone contact indices of up to 91.60%. There were a number of resorption lacunae on the HAC coat with depths of up to 76.6 microns and widths of up to 453 microns. Our results confirmed that considerable bone remodelling had taken place and that the apatite-coated prosthesis had united with bone despite the lack of appreciable immediate press-fit. Hydroxyapatite particles which had been released did not appear to show any negative effects on the stability of the implant.

Abstract: We present an analysis of the enhancement of CP-violating charge asymmetries in $K \rightarrow 3\pi$ decays. Calculations of decay amplitudes are performed on the basis of bosonized strong and weak Lagrangians derived from QCD-motivated quark Lagrangians. We show that the interplay of fourth-order contributions of chiral Lagrangians for strong interactions and penguin operators in weak interactions significantly enhances the charge asymmetries.

Abstract: The amplitudes of the decays K→2π and K→3π have been calculated within the chiral Lagrangian approach including chiral loops. The phenomenological structure of the effective weak meson interaction has then been fixed by experimental data. We estimate the CP asymmetry for decay probabilities and slope parameters in K±→π±π±π∓ and K±→π0π0π± decays using data on Re(ε′/ε). The modification of the Li-Wolfenstein relation for the direct CP-violation parameter in [Formula: see text] decays is also discussed.

Abstract: As a prototype towards a single photon source we present a quantum-dot-based device, which is tunable and fully electrically pumped. Both the electrical pumping process and the manipulation of the emission wavelength of the quantum dots are independently achieved in this three-terminal device. We realized this approach by electro-optically pumping the quantum dots via a light-emitting diode which is monolithically integrated underneath the quantum dot layer. Independently from the pumping process, electrical tuning of the emission wavelength of the quantum dots is achieved by the quantum confined Stark effect using a third contact. This device structure is fully extensible with high quality resonators based, for instance, on photonic crystal structures targeting high extraction efficiencies via the Purcell effect.

Abstract: We demonstrate an electrically tunable two dimensional photonic crystal nanocavity containing InAs self-assembled quantum dots (QDs). Photoluminescence and electroluminescence measurements are combined to probe the cavity mode structure and demonstrate a local electrical contact to the quantum dots. Measurements performed as a function of the electric field enable us to probe the capture, relaxation, and recombination dynamics of photogenerated carriers inside the quantum dots emitting into a modified photonic environment. Furthermore, the two dimensional photonic crystal is probed by spatially dependent photocurrent spectroscopy indicating a 3.5× enhancement of the local radiative lifetime of the QDs inside the photonic crystal environment.

Abstract: A new measurement of the $b\overline{b}$ production cross section in 920 GeV proton-nucleus collisions is presented by the HERA-B Collaboration. The $b\overline{b}$ production is tagged via inclusive bottom quark decays into $J/\ensuremath{\psi}$ mesons by exploiting the longitudinal separation of $J/\ensuremath{\psi}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{l}^{+}{l}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ decay vertices from the primary proton-nucleus interaction point. Both ${e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ and ${\ensuremath{\mu}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\mu}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ channels are reconstructed for a total of $83\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}12$ inclusive $b\ensuremath{\rightarrow}J/\ensuremath{\psi}X$ events found. The combined analysis yields a $b\overline{b}$ to prompt $J/\ensuremath{\psi}$ cross section ratio of $\frac{\ensuremath{\Delta}\ensuremath{\sigma}(b\overline{b})}{\ensuremath{\Delta}{\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{J/\ensuremath{\psi}}}=0.032\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}{0.005}_{\mathrm{stat}}\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}{0.004}_{\mathrm{sys}}$ measured in the ${x}_{F}$ acceptance ($\ensuremath{-}0.35l{x}_{F}l0.15$), extrapolated to $\ensuremath{\sigma}(b\overline{b})=14.9\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}{2.2}_{\mathrm{stat}}\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}{2.4}_{\mathrm{sys}}\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{\text{nb/nucleon}}$ in the total phase space.

Abstract: The HERA-B Outer Tracker is a large detector with 112,674 drift chamber channels. It is exposed to a particle flux of up to 2 × 10 5 cm - 2 s - 1 thus coping with conditions similar to those expected for the LHC experiments. The front-end readout system, based on the ASD-8 chip and a customized TDC chip, is designed to fulfil the requirements on low noise, high sensitivity, rate tolerance, and high integration density. The TDC system is based on an ASIC which digitizes the time in bins of about 0.5 ns within a total of 256 bins. The chip also comprises a pipeline to store data from 128 events which is required for a deadtime-free trigger and data acquisition system. We report on the development, installation, and commissioning of the front-end electronics, including the grounding and noise suppression schemes, and discuss its performance in the HERA-B experiment.

Abstract: We have searched for ${\ensuremath{\Theta}}^{+}$(1540) and ${\ensuremath{\Xi}}^{--}$(1862) pentaquark candidates in proton-inducedreactions on C, Ti, and W targets at midrapidity and $\sqrt{s}=41.6\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{G}\mathrm{e}\mathrm{V}$. In $2\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{8}$ inelastic eventswe find no evidence for narrow ($\ensuremath{\sigma}\ensuremath{\approx}5\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{M}\mathrm{e}\mathrm{V}$) signals in the ${\ensuremath{\Theta}}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}p{K}_{S}^{0}$ and ${\ensuremath{\Xi}}^{--}$$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}$${\ensuremath{\Xi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ channels; our 95% C.L. upper limits (UL) forthe inclusive production cross section times branching fraction $\mathcal{B}\text{ }d\ensuremath{\sigma}/dy{|}_{y\ensuremath{\approx}0}$ are $(4--16)\ensuremath{\mu}b/N$ for a ${\ensuremath{\Theta}}^{+}$ mass between 1521 and 1555 MeV,and $2.5\ensuremath{\mu}b/N$ for the ${\ensuremath{\Xi}}^{--}$. The UL of the yield ratio of ${\ensuremath{\Theta}}^{+}/\ensuremath{\Lambda}(1520)l(3--12)%$ is significantly lower than model predictions.Our UL of $\mathcal{B}\text{ }{\ensuremath{\Xi}}^{--}/\ensuremath{\Xi}(1530{)}^{0}l4%$ is at variance with the results that have provided the first evidencefor the ${\ensuremath{\Xi}}^{--}$.

Abstract: We have searched for Theta+(1540) and Xi(--)(1862) pentaquark candidates in proton-induced reactions on C, Ti, and W targets at midrapidity and square root of s = 41.6 GeV. In 2 x 10(8) inelastic events we find no evidence for narrow (sigma approximately 5 MeV) signals in the Theta+ --pK0(S) and Xi(--) --Xi- pi- channels; our 95% C.L. upper limits (UL) for the inclusive production cross section times branching fraction B dsigma/dy/(y approximately 0) are (4-16) mub/N for a Theta+ mass between 1521 and 1555 MeV, and 2.5 mub/N for the Xi(--). The UL of the yield ratio of Theta+/Lambda(1520)(3-12)% is significantly lower than model predictions. Our UL of B Xi(--)/Xi(1530)04% is at variance with the results that have provided the first evidence for the Xi(--).
