Abstract

The Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) is a second-generation VLT panoramic integral-field spectrograph currently in manufacturing, assembly and integration phase. MUSE has a field of 1x1 arcmin2 sampled at 0.2x0.2 arcsec2 and is assisted by the VLT ground layer adaptive optics ESO facility using four laser guide stars. The instrument is a large assembly of 24 identical high performance integral field units, each one composed of an advanced image slicer, a spectrograph and a 4kx4k detector. Abstract

This paper presents an overview of SPIRou, the new-generation near-infrared spectropolarimeter / precision velocimeter recently installed on the 3.6-m Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT). Starting from the two main science goals, namely the quest for planetary systems around nearby M dwarfs and the study of magnetized star / planet formation, we outline the instrument concept that was designed to efficiently address these forefront topics, and detail the in-lab and on-sky instrument performances measured throughout the intensive testing phase that SPIRou was submitted to before passing the final acceptance review in early 2019 and initiating science observations. With a central position among the newly started programmes, the SPIRou Legacy Survey (SLS) Large Programme was allocated 300 CFHT nights until at least mid 2022. We also briefly describe a few of the first results obtained in the various science topics that SPIRou started investigating, focusing in particular on planetary systems of nearby M dwarfs, transiting exoplanets and their atmospheres, magnetic fields of young stars, but also on alternate science goals like the atmospheres of M dwarfs and the Earth's atmosphere. We finally conclude on the essential role that SPIRou and the CFHT can play in coordination with forthcoming major facilities like the JWST, the ELTs, PLATO and ARIEL over the decade., Comment: MNRAS, in press (20 pages, 18 figures, 1 table)

Abstract

International audience; Nowadays, due to environmental concerns, fast on-site quantitative analyses of soils are required. Laser induced breakdown spectroscopy is a serious candidate to address this challenge and is especially well suited for multi-elemental analysis of heavy metals. However, saturation and matrix effects prevent from a simple treatment of the LIBS data, namely through a regular calibration curve. This paper details the limits of this approach and consequently emphasizes the advantage of using artificial neural networks well suited for non-linear and multi-variate calibration. This advanced method of data analysis is evaluated in the case of real soil samples and on-site LIBS measurements. The selection of the LIBS data as input data of the network is particularly detailed and finally, resulting errors of prediction lower than 20% for aluminum, calcium, copper and iron demonstrate the good efficiency of the artificial neural networks for on-site quantitative LIBS of soils.

Abstract

International audience; Artificial neural networks were applied to process data from on-site LIBS analysis of soil samples. A first artificial neural network allowed retrieving the relative amounts of silicate, calcareous and ores matrices into soils. As a consequence, each soil sample was correctly located inside the ternary diagram characterized by these three matrices, as verified by ICP-AES. Then a series of artificial neural networks were applied to quantify lead into soil samples. More precisely, two models were designed for classification purpose according to both the type of matrix and the range of lead concentrations. Then, three quantitative models were locally applied to three data subsets. This complete approach allowed reaching a relative error of prediction close to 20%, considered as satisfying in the case of on-site analysis.

Abstract

We present in this paper the technical characteristics of a new polarimetric unit dedicated to the MuSiCoS echelle spectrograph. The first test runs indicate that our instrument is very good at measuring polarisation or depolarisation structures in line profiles. It is therefore one of the very few facilities worldwide for studying magnetic topologies of active and chemically peculiar stars through rotational modulation of linearly and circularly polarised Zeeman signatures in line profiles. It is also a very interesting tool for investigating geometries of non-axisymmetric circumstellar environments through depolarisation of spectral lines formed within the scattering envelope.

Abstract

Three distinct monoclonal gammopathies were identified in the serum of a 79 year-old man. In 1972 he presented with Waldenstrom's macroglobulinemia IgM Kappa. Twenty years later multiple myeloma was diagnoses. Serum protein electrophoresis performed at this time showed three monoclonal bands. Immunofixation identified these bands as monoclonal IgM kappa, IgG kappa and IgA kappa. Twenty-six cases of triclonal gammopathies were previously reported. Sixteen cases were associated with malignant immuno-proliferative diseases (non-hodgkin lymphoma, Waldenstrom's macroglobulinemia, multiple myeloma); five cases with non-hematologic diseases; three cases were of undetermined significance. The origin of three distinct monoclonal proteins may derive from three unrelated clones or alternatively from a single clone in which an isotype switch has occurred.

Abstract

The Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) is a second-generation VLT panoramic integral-field spectrograph under preliminary design study. MUSE has a field of 1x1 arcmin**2 sampled at 0.2x0.2 arcsec**2 and is assisted by the VLT ground layer adaptive optics ESO facility using four laser guide stars. The simultaneous spectral range is 465-930 nm, at a resolution of R~3000. MUSE couples the discovery potential of a large imaging device to the measuring capabilities of a high-quality spectrograph, while taking advantage of the increased spatial resolution provided by adaptive optics. This makes MUSE a unique and tremendously powerful instrument for discovering and characterizing objects that lie beyond the reach of even the deepest imaging surveys. MUSE has also a high spatial resolution mode with 7.5x7.5 arcsec**2 field of view sampled at 25 milli-arcsec. In this mode MUSE should be able to obtain diffraction limited data-cubes in the 600-930 nm wavelength range. Abstract

The Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) is a second-generation instrument in development for the Very Large Telescope (VLT) of the European Southern Observatory (ESO), due to begin operation in 2011/12. MUSE will be an extremely powerful integral-field spectrograph fed by a new multiple-laser adaptive optics system on the VLT. In its usual operating mode, MUSE will, in a single observation, produce a 3-dimensional data cube consisting of 90,000 R 3000 spectra, each covering a full spectral octave (480-930 nm), and fully sampling a contiguous 1×1 arcmin2 field with 0.2×0.2 arcsec2 apertures. A high-resolution mode will increase the spatial sampling to 0.025 arcsec per pixel. MUSE is built around a novel arrangement of 24 identical spectrographs (each comparable to a 1st generation VLT instrument), which are fed by a set of 24 precision image slicers. MUSE is designed for stability, with only 2 modes, and virtually no moving parts, allowing very long exposures to be accumulated. Together with high throughput, this ensures that MUSE will have extreme sensitivity for observing faint objects. We overview the technical and scientific aspects of MUSE, highlighting the key challenges for dealing with the unprecedented quantity and complexity of the data, and the integration with the VLT adaptive optics facility (AOF) - a key development on the path to extremely large telescopes (ELTs). © 2008 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Abstract

Three distinct monoclonal gammopathies were identified in the serum of a 79 year-old man. In 1972 he presented with Waldenström's macroglobulinemia IgM Kappa. Twenty years later multiple myeloma was diagnoses. Serum protein electrophoresis performed at this time showed three monoclonal bands. Immunofixation identified these bands as monoclonal IgM kappa, IgG kappa and IgA kappa. Twenty-six cases of triclonal gammopathies were previously reported. Sixteen cases were associated with malignant immuno-proliferative diseases (non-hodgkin lymphoma, Waldenström's macroglobulinemia, multiple myeloma); five cases with non-hematologic diseases; three cases were of undetermined significance. The origin of three distinct monoclonal proteins may derive from three unrelated clones or alternatively from a single clone in which an isotype switch has occurred.

Abstract

The authors report a case, not described so far in literature, of an association of HbJ-Broussais [alpha (90 (PG2) lys--asn beta 2] with beta + thalassemia in a young girl born of Italian father and Breton mother. This association is clinically silent. Biochemistry revealed, besides HbA, the presence of HbJ-Broussais in the proportion of 19.4% and HbA2 value of 3.9%. These percentages, slightly lower than expected, are explained. A familial study is presented.

Abstract

Blood collected from 62 fetuses aged 20-38 weeks of gestation was studied. The values of ten lipid parameters were determined: cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TGs), apolipoprotein A1 (apo A1), apolipoprotein B (apo B), apolipoprotein E (apo E), total apolipoprotein CIII (apo CIII), apolipoprotein CIII present in particles containing apo B (apo CIII LpB) or not (apo CIII Lp non-B), lipoparticles A1 (LpA1), and lipoprotein a (Lp(a)). The results show that, except for apo E, all the studied parameters were present in lower concentrations than in adults and newborns, and that Lp(a) is not detectable at that stage in life.

Abstract

Low density lipoproteins (LDL) are considered to be the most atherogenic of lipoproteins. These LDL can be modified and oxidative modifications are now well known. In addition, other atherogenic modifications of LDL exist, such as desialylation. In the present study sialic acid content was determined in LDL preparations obtained from patients with coronary artery disease (CAD+) and compared with that of healthy subjects and patients without coronary heart disease (CAD-). The sialic acid concentration was found to be statistically lower (P0.05) in the LDL of CAD+ patients (11.6 +/- 2.7 micrograms/mg of protein) than in the LDL of controls (16.5 +/- 5.6 micrograms/mg of protein) or in the LDL of CAD- patients (15.3 +/- 3.8 micrograms/mg of protein). In subgroups of CAD+ patients divided according to the severity of the disease, no statistically significant difference was observed in LDL sialic acid content. This work confirms the presence of desialylated LDL in the sera of patients with atheroma.

Abstract

MUSE (Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer) is a second generation instrument developed for ESO (European Southern Observatory) to be installed on the VLT (Very Large Telescope) in year 2012. The MUSE project is supported by a European consortium of 7 institutes. After a successful Final Design Review the project is now facing a turning point which consist in shifting from design to manufacturing from calculation to test... from dream to reality. At the start many technical and management challenges were there as well as unknowns. They could all be derived of the same simple question: How to deal with complexity? The complexity of the instrument of the work to de done of the organization of the interfaces of financial and procurement rules etc. This particular moment in the project life cycle is the opportunity to look back and evaluate the management methods implemented during the design phase regarding this original question. What are the lessons learn? What has been successful? What could have been done differently? Abstract

A macrocreatine-kinase type 1 was identified by CK isoenzyme electrophoresis of a serum sample from a patient. Constituents of this enzyme complex were studied. The isoenzyme present in the macrocreatine-kinase was identified using immunoprecipitation with antibodies against the M subunit. Affinity chromatography then determined the type of the immunoglobulin bound to the CK isoenzyme. A protocol for studying macrocreatine-kinase type 1 compounds is proposed.

Serum C-Reactive Protein (CRP) levels in 174 patients with monoclonal gammapathies were evaluated by nephelemetry using latex particles and by turbidimetry. In the IgM monoclonal components group (n = 72) we found discrepancies between the two methods in 12,5 % of cases. So, without any inflammation argument, increased CRP values must be verified by another method in these patients.

Immunofixation showed three different monoclonal dysglobulinemias: IgM Kappa, IgG Kappa and IgA Kappa.

Abstract

Introduction Malaria is a notifiable disease in all European Union and European Economic Area countries except Belgium and France, where only autochthonous malaria is notifiable. Although morbidity caused by malaria has been assessed, little is known about mortality incidence. Objective Our aim was to estimate the number of imported malaria-related deaths in hospital in metropolitan France. Methods We matched individual deaths reported between 1 January 2005 and 31 December 2014 to the French National Reference Centre for malaria (FNRCm) with malaria-related deaths from two other sources: the French National Registry on medical causes of death and the French national hospital discharge database. A capture–recapture method with log-linear modelling was used. Age, sex and place of death stratification were applied to remove heterogeneity. Results The estimated malaria-related deaths in metropolitan France during the study period were 205 (95% confidence interval (CI): 191–219). The annual mean number of malaria-related deaths was estimated at 21 (95% CI: 19–22). The FNRCm malaria-related deaths surveillance had a 38% sensitivity (95% CI: 32–44). Among 161 in-hospital individual malaria-related deaths reported from three data sources, the sex ratio (male to female) was 2.6. Median age of the patients was 57 years, ranging from 1 to 89 years. Conclusion The pertinent finding of this report is that malaria-related death records were significantly less* complete than case records. Therefore, data comparison of imported malaria morbidity and mortality between countries should imperatively be assessed using standard indicators weighted according to the completeness of health surveillance systems.

Abstract

Heavy metals have long been known to be detrimental to human health and the environment. Their emission is mainly considered to occur via the atmospheric route. Most of airborne heavy metals are of anthropogenic origin and produced through combustion processes at industrial sites such as incinerators and foundries. Current regulations impose threshold limits on heavy metal emissions. The reference method currently implemented for quantitative measurements at exhaust stacks consists of on-site sampling of heavy metals on filters for the particulate phase (the most prominent and only fraction considered in this study) prior to subsequent laboratory analysis. Results are therefore known only a few days after sampling. Stiffer regulations require the development of adapted tools allowing automatic, on-site or even in-situ measurements with temporal resolutions. The Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) technique was deemed as a potential candidate to meet these requirements. On site experiments were run by melting copper bars and monitoring emission of this element in an exhaust duct at a pilot-scale furnace in a French research center dedicated to metal casting. Two approaches designated as indirect and direct analysis were broached in these experiments. The former corresponds to filter enrichment prior to subsequent LIBS interrogation whereas the latter entails laser focusing right through the aerosol for detection. On-site calibration curves were built and compared with those obtained at laboratory scale in order to investigate possible matrix and analyte effects. Eventually, the obtained results in terms of detection limits and quantitative temporal monitoring of copper emission clearly emphasize the potentialities of the direct LIBS measurements., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier B.V. Abstract

Three distinct monoclonal gammopathies were identified in the serum of a 79 year-old man. In 1972 he presented with Waldenström's macroglobulinemia IgM Kappa. Twenty years later multiple myeloma was diagnoses. Serum protein electrophoresis performed at this time showed three monoclonal bands. Immunofixation identified these bands as monoclonal IgM kappa, IgG kappa and IgA kappa. Twenty-six cases of triclonal gammopathies were previously reported. Sixteen cases were associated with malignant immuno-proliferative diseases (non-hodgkin lymphoma, Waldenström's macroglobulinemia, multiple myeloma); five cases with non-hematologic diseases; three cases were of undetermined significance. The origin of three distinct monoclonal proteins may derive from three unrelated clones or alternatively from a single clone in which an isotype switch has occurred.

Abstract

The authors report a case, not described so far in literature, of an association of HbJ-Broussais [alpha (90 (PG2) lys-->asn beta 2] with beta + thalassemia in a young girl born of Italian father and Breton mother. This association is clinically silent. Biochemistry revealed, besides HbA, the presence of HbJ-Broussais in the proportion of 19.4% and HbA2 value of 3.9%. These percentages, slightly lower than expected, are explained. A familial study is presented.

Abstract

Blood collected from 62 fetuses aged 20-38 weeks of gestation was studied. The values of ten lipid parameters were determined: cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TGs), apolipoprotein A1 (apo A1), apolipoprotein B (apo B), apolipoprotein E (apo E), total apolipoprotein CIII (apo CIII), apolipoprotein CIII present in particles containing apo B (apo CIII LpB) or not (apo CIII Lp non-B), lipoparticles A1 (LpA1), and lipoprotein a (Lp(a)). The results show that, except for apo E, all the studied parameters were present in lower concentrations than in adults and newborns, and that Lp(a) is not detectable at that stage in life.

Abstract

Lipid peroxidation was assessed by measuring the concentrations of thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances in plasma from 204 Type 2 diabetic patients, relative to 107 controls. The concentrations obtained in diabetic patients (3.08 +/- 0.37 mumol/l) were significantly higher than in controls (2.80 +/- 0.34 mumol/l) (p < 0.0001). Values were also significantly increased in patients with macroangiopathy and/or microangiopathy (3.17 +/- 0.41 mumol/l), relative to patients void of vascular complications (2.92 +/- 0.34 mumol/l) (p < 0.001). Elevated concentrations were independent of the type of vascular complication and their possible associations. In patients without vascular affection, thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances were in significantly higher concentrations in hypertensive (3.07 +/- 0.36 mumol/l) than in normotensive (2.87 +/- 0.29 mumol/l) (p < 0.01) patients. There was a correlation between these values and those of total cholesterol (r = 0.46, p < 0.0001) and triglyceride (r = 0.45, p < 0.0001). Statistical analysis by multivariate logistical regression revealed that among the independent factors (TBARS, APO A1, hypertension, age), thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances constituted the parameter most strongly linked to the existence of vascular complications. This study has evidenced a lipid peroxidation disorder in non insulin- dependent diabetes mellitus, more marked in patients with vascular affection. Thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances appear to be an independent marker of vascular complications in Type 2 diabetes.

Abstract

Since oxidized LDL may play a role in the genesis of atheroma, which is the primary complication of non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM), we investigated whether the LDL of diabetic patients were more prone to oxidation than those of healthy controls. We therefore studied the susceptibility of LDL to oxidation by phenylhydrazine (LDL-PO) in NIDDM patients with or without macroangiopathy, and in controls. Results showed that the LDL of patients with macroangiopathy (n = 50) were more susceptible to oxidation than those of both NIDDM patients without vascular complications (n = 50) and controls (n = 50). In diabetic patients, there was a positive correlation between LDL-PO and the following parameters: total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL cholesterol, apolipoprotein B. In contrast, there was no correlation between LDL-PO and the parameters of glycemic control (fasting glucose, HbAlc). After analyzing the composition of LDL, it appeared that LDL-PO values in diabetic patients were positively correlated with those of all LDL constituents. The increase in LDL-PO observed in the group of NIDDM patients with macroangiopathy could be a consequence of an increase in the LDL triglyceride content in these patients.

Abstract

Low density lipoproteins (LDL) are considered to be the most atherogenic of lipoproteins. These LDL can be modified and oxidative modifications are now well known. In addition, other atherogenic modifications of LDL exist, such as desialylation. In the present study sialic acid content was determined in LDL preparations obtained from patients with coronary artery disease (CAD+) and compared with that of healthy subjects and patients without coronary heart disease (CAD-). The sialic acid concentration was found to be statistically lower (P < 0.05) in the LDL of CAD+ patients (11.6 +/- 2.7 micrograms/mg of protein) than in the LDL of controls (16.5 +/- 5.6 micrograms/mg of protein) or in the LDL of CAD- patients (15.3 +/- 3.8 micrograms/mg of protein). In subgroups of CAD+ patients divided according to the severity of the disease, no statistically significant difference was observed in LDL sialic acid content. This work confirms the presence of desialylated LDL in the sera of patients with atheroma.

Abstract

Malondialdehyde, a marker of lipid peroxidation, was measured as thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) in 117 diabetic patients and 53 controls. Patients were divided into groups and subgroups according to the type of diabetes (type 1 and type 2) and the existence or not of vascular complication (macro- or micro-angiopathy). Results showed that TBARS concentrations were significantly higher in type 1 (P < 0.0001) and type 2 (P < 0.001) diabetic patients than in the control group. The plasma TBARS concentrations in type 1 and type 2 diabetic patients did not differ significantly. Among the patients with vascular disease, type 2 diabetic patients with macroangiopathy had significantly higher TBARS concentrations than patients with no vascular complication (P < 0.05). Whichever the type of diabetes, there was no correlation between TBARS concentrations and glycaemic control: glycosylated haemoglobin, fasting blood glucose. This study confirmed the existence of lipid peroxidation disorders in diabetic patients.

Abstract

A macrocreatine-kinase type 1 was identified by CK isoenzyme electrophoresis of a serum sample from a patient. Constituents of this enzyme complex were studied. The isoenzyme present in the macrocreatine-kinase was identified using immunoprecipitation with antibodies against the M subunit. Affinity chromatography then determined the type of the immunoglobulin bound to the CK isoenzyme. A protocol for studying macrocreatine-kinase type 1 compounds is proposed.
