Abstract

Foot plantar pressure monitoring is an important tool for biomechanical assessment of posture, foot complications due to callus formation and wounds and for sports applications. The pronounced cost associated with commercial plantar pressure monitoring systems and inflexibility of custom analyzing data in such systems prompted the development of a versatile system with minimized cost. This study focuses on the development of such a system with high speed data acquisition providing analysis tools for assessing plantar pressure variations of diabetic patients with calloused feet. The new system is capable of achieving a frame rate of 155 Hz which is ideal for pressure monitoring during both standing and walking. The system was verified using 10 normal subjects and 5 diabetic subjects with calluses on in their feet. 2. Enhanced arc magmatic productivity of the Western Pacific island arcs deduced from gravity-derived arc crustal growth rates

Abstract

Island arcs are postulated as the juvenile components that contribute to the growth of continental crust. Growth rates of arc crusts were previously computed using crustal thicknesses derived from seismic data. Consequently, crustal growth rates of oceanic island arcs are also constrained by the limited seismic data availability. This work presents the first comparison of gravity-derived magmatic growth rates of Western Pacific oceanic island arcs. We used the statistical correlation between Bouguer anomalies and seismic-derived crustal thicknesses to generate an empirical formula. The new empirical formula was utilized to estimate the crustal thicknesses of oceanic island arcs using Bouguer anomalies from the EGM2008 global gravity model. The resulting crustal thicknesses were employed to compute the magmatic growth rates of western Pacific island arcs and the Philippine island arc system. The latest magmatic growth rate estimates show that the magmatic productivity of Western Pacific island arcs, which are directly associated with Pacific Plate subduction, is significantly higher (28–60 km3/km/m.y). The growth rate of the Pacific island arcs is higher compared to the magmatic growth rate computed for the other oceanic island arcs (12–25 km3/km/m.y), which are derived from the subduction of other oceanic lithospheres (i.e., the Philippine Sea Plate; Caribbean Sea Plate; and Eurasia-South China Sea slabs). This is attributed to the variation in the ages of the subducting plates. The Pacific Plate, being older, is associated with higher degrees of serpentinization and sediment cover, which introduce more volatiles inducing more robust partial melting of the mantle wedge.

Despite substantial declines since 2000, lower respiratory infections (LRIs), diarrhoeal diseases, and malaria remain among the leading causes of nonfatal and fatal disease burden for children under 5 years of age (under 5), primarily in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The spatial burden of each of these diseases has been estimated subnationally across SSA, yet no prior analyses have examined the pattern of their combined burden. Here we synthesise subnational estimates of the burden of LRIs, diarrhoea, and malaria in children under-5 from 2000 to 2017 for 43 sub-Saharan countries. Some units faced a relatively equal burden from each of the three diseases, while others had one or two dominant sources of unit-level burden, with no consistent pattern geographically across the entire subcontinent. Using a subnational counterfactual analysis, we show that nearly 300 million DALYs could have been averted since 2000 by raising all units to their national average. Our findings are directly relevant for decision-makers in determining which and targeting where the most appropriate interventions are for increasing child survival.

8. Development of biodegradable tri-blended fabrics with improved moisture management properties using cotton/polylactic-acid/bamboo-viscose fibres.

Abstract

The influence of fibre blend composition on the moisture management properties of tri-blended cotton-rich knit fabrics with biodegradability has been studied. The cotton, polylactic acid and bamboo-viscose fibres are blended to produce yarns of 14.7 tex (40s Ne) with four different blend proportions, namely 60/20/20, 50/30/20, 50/20/30 and 40/30/30. The yarns are then knitted into a single jersey structure of 130-135 gsm, followed by its scouring, bleaching and relaxation treatments. The relaxed fabrics are then evaluated for dynamic moisture transport properties using the SDL Atlas moisture management tester. The moisture management test results indicate that blending polylactic acid fibres with cotton and bamboo-viscose fibres improves the blended fabric's moisture management properties. The overall moisture management capability value is found to be better for cotton/polylactic-acid/bamboo-viscose blended fabric in the proportion of 50/30/20. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

O exemplo mais conhecido é o chamado Último Teorema de Fermat que foi resolvido somente em 1994 por Andrew Wiles e por isso tem sido agraciado por diversos prêmios, sendo o mais recente deles o Prêmio Abel de 2016. Em 1772, a partir dos seus resultados sobre o problema de Fermat para o caso n = 3, Leonard Euler conjecturou que a soma de n-1 parcelas de potências n de números inteiros não é uma pontência n de algum número inteiro. Quase dois séculos depois, por meio de recurso computacional, L. J. Lander e T. R. Parkin encontraram um contraexemplo dessa conjectura para o caso n=5. Entretanto, tais técnicas não foram suficientes para resolver o problema no caso n = 4. No presente projeto de dissertação, seguindo artigo de N. D. Elkies, vamos nos concentrar no caso n = 4 da conjectura de Euler. Para isto consideraremos alguns conceitos da Geometria Algébrica, em especial usaremos a teoria de curvas elípticas, que também foi um importante ingrediente usado por Wiles. Abstract

The aim of the study was to determine the postharvest fruit quality of mango cv. Alphonso treated with the laboratory grade (LG) and commercial grade (CG) Calcium Carbide (CaC2) at the reported highest acceptable dose, and elemental composition analysis (EDX) results to support the statements for traceability of hazardous trace elements in CaC2, which can serve as a basis towards developing sensors for identifying CaC2 treated mangoes through detection of trace elements. Physical, physiological, biochemical and EDX of mango cv. Alphonso harvested from farmers' field of Santur village in Krishnagiri district of Tamil Nadu, India were used for the study. All studied physical characteristics except fruit firmness of CG CaC2 treated fruits did not correlate to desirable fruit characteristics like total soluble solids (TSS), pH, titrable acidity, total sugars and ascorbic acid. Besides, these parameters were desirable only in control fruits, though a number of days taken to reach fruit consumption stage was relatively more compared to CaC2 treatment. In vitro, free radical scavenging potential of DPPH was comparatively higher in control fruits than CaC2 treated fruits of both grades. Lab grade (LG) CaC2 treated fruits were non-significant in modifying physical, physiological and biochemical properties of mango cv. Alphonso except for TSS. However, at the end of the experimental period, CG CaC2 treated fruits recorded higher TSS than LG CaC2 treated fruits. Energy Dispersive X-Ray (EDX) results confirmed traceability of health hazardous chemical substances of arsenic (As) and phosphorous (P) in both LG and CG CaC2 lumps. Calcium carbide when used as an artificial ripening agent was not in contact with the fruit surface, the presence of arsenic and phosphorus were not detected in the EDX spectrum, a novel finding of our study. 12. Low-stress mechanical properties and fabric hand of cotton and polylactic acid fibre blended knitted fabrics.

Abstract

Low-stress mechanical behavior of cotton-rich/polylactic acid blended fabrics has been investigated and the results are compared with cotton and polylactic acid fibre fabrics. The polylactic acid fibres are mixed with cotton fibres in two different proportions, namely 20% and 35% and spun into 14.76 tex (40s Ne) yarn. The yarns are then knit into single jersey structure followed by chemical pretreatments and relaxation. The relaxed fabrics are tested for low-stress mechanical properties using Kawabata evaluation system for fabrics (KES-F) and the hand values are calculated. The results show that the addition of PLA fibres to cotton enhances the smoothness and softness of the blended fabrics. The total hand value of the fabrics ranges between 3.2 and 3.5. Abstract

An 83-year-old lady known to have type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension and primary hypothyroidism presented with the complaints of increased thirst of one month duration, diffuse abdominal pain, constipation and mild nausea of one week duration. She was found to have hypercalcaemia. Review of her treatment records revealed that she had received a high dose of vitamin D (average dose of 63,000 IU/day) over two months. Serum vitamin D was 347 ng/mL. Patient was advised to withhold all calcium and vitamin D preparations and further managed with intravenous 0.9% saline, diuretics and zoledronic acid. She improved clinically; her serum calcium levels became normal and she was subsequently discharged in stable condition. This case illustrates that inappropriate therapy with grossly excessive doses of vitamin D can result in intoxication leading on to hypercalcaemia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of omega-3 fatty acids on lipid peroxidation and antioxidant enzyme activities in non-insulin dependent diabetic patients.Thirty-four non-insulin dependent diabetic patients were selected for this study and they were initially treated with antidiabetic drugs alone for one month. This was followed by supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids (1,080 mg of EPA and 720 mg of DHA per day) along with the antidiabetic drugs for a period of two months.No change in glycaemic control was observed in diabetic patients at the end of two months of omega-3 fatty acids therapy along with antidiabetic drugs. The combined treatment significantly reduced serum triglycerides (2.07 +/- 0.94 mmol/l, before combined therapy vs 1.54 +/- 0.49 mmol/l after combined therapy, P0.05) and increased HDL-cholesterol levels (0.93 +/- 0.099 mmol/l, before combined therapy vs 1.04 +/- 0.098 mmol/l after therapy, P0.01). The raised lipid peroxide levels (5.14 +/- 0.61 micromol MDA/l in controls vs 6.36 +/- 1.56 micromol MDA/l in diabetic patients, P0.001) were significantly decreased in these patients after the combined therapy (6.36 +/- 1.56 micromol MDA/l, before combined therapy vs 5.16 +/- 0.7 micromol MDA/l, after combined therapy, P0.01). Among the erythrocyte antioxidant enzymes, the Glutathione peroxidase activity was increased (32.5 +/- 9.9 U/g Hb/min, before combined therapy vs 42.25 +/- 4.6 U/g Hb/min, after combined therapy, P0.01) while no change was observed in Catalase (99.7 +/- 30.4 KU/g Hb before combined therapy vs 85.35 +/- 23.41 KU/g Hb, after combined therapy) and Superoxide dismutase activities (2.6 +/- 1.04 U/mg Hb/min, before therapy vs 3.01 +/- 1.08 U/mg Hb/min, after combined therapy) after the 2 months of combined treatment with antidiabetic agents and omega-3 fatty acids.Supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids has beneficial effects on serum triglycerides, HDL-cholesterol, lipid peroxidation and antioxidant enzymes, which may lead to decreased rate of occurrence of vascular complications in diabetes.

Abstract

Forecasting possible future relationships between people in a network requires a study of the evolution of their links. To capture network dynamics and temporal variations in link strengths between various types of nodes in a network, a dynamic weighted heterogeneous network is to be considered. Link strength prediction in such networks is still an open problem. Moreover, a study of variations in link strengths with respect to time has not yet been explored. The time granularity at which the weights of various links change remains to be delved into. To tackle these problems, we propose a neural network framework to predict dynamic variations in weighted heterogeneous social networks. Our link strength prediction model predicts future relationships between people, along with a measure of the strength of those relationships. The experimental results highlight the fact that link weights and dynamism greatly impact the performance of link strength prediction., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.

Abstract

The objective of the present study is to elucidate the long-term effects of anti-hyperglycemic active principle, Mcy protein (MCP), isolated from the fruits of Momordica cymbalaria on carbohydrate metabolism and oxidative stress in experimental diabetic rats. We used streptozotocin induced diabetic rats for the current studies. Our studies showed that MCP (2.5mg/kg.b.w) treatment significantly normalized the deranged activities of critical carbohydrate metabolizing enzymes, hexokinase, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, glucose-6-phosphatase and fructose-1,6-bis phosphatase. In addition MCP showed inhibitory activity on α-glucosidase and aldose reductase enzymes in in vitro assays. Further MCP treatment improved the antioxidant defensive mechanism by preventing deleterious oxidative products of cellular metabolism, which initiates the lipid peroxidation and by normalizing the antioxidant enzyme (catalase, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase) activities. Additional structural studies using circular dichroism spectroscopy indicate that MCP contains majorly α-helix. Our findings suggest MCP regulates blood glucose and better manage diabetes mellitus associated complications by regulating carbohydrate metabolism and by protecting from the deleterious effects of oxidative stress., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier B.V.
