Objectives To evaluate the effect of sacculectomy on the immediate postoperative complication rate in dogs affected with brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome. Materials and Methods Retrospective review of clinical records of brachycephalic dogs with everted saccules that underwent surgery for brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome between 2009 and 2014. Dogs were grouped as those having nares resection and staphylectomy only and those having nares resection, staphylectomy and laryngeal sacculectomy. Complications were scored as mild, moderate or severe. Results In total, 37 dogs were included in the sacculectomy group and 44 in the comparator group. Dogs that had undergone sacculectomy were more likely to develop postoperative complications, with 18 of 37 developing complications, nine of which were moderate to severe. In the group without sacculectomy, nine of 44 dogs developed complications, of which one was severe. Different breed distribution between groups might also impact this outcome. Clinical Significance The results suggest that sacculectomy might increase morbidity following brachycephalic airway surgery, but repeat studies are required to confirm this result. Further information is also required to determine whether the short-term risks of sacculectomy are outweighed by superior long-term functional outcome.

A two-year-old, female neutered, cross-breed dog imported from Romania was diagnosed with nasal infestation of Linguatula serrata after she sneezed out an adult female. The dog was presented with mucopurulent/sanguinous nasal discharge, marked left-sided exophthalmia, conjunctival hyperaemia and chemosis. Computed tomography and left frontal sinusotomy revealed no further evidence of adult parasites. In addition, there was no evidence of egg shedding in the nasal secretions or faeces. Clinical signs resolved within 48 hours of sinusotomy, and with systemic broad-spectrum antibiotics and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Recommendations are given in this report regarding the management and follow-up of this important zoonotic disease.

Objectives: To assess the breed-specific prevalence of, and effects of corrective airway surgery on, gastrointestinal signs in French bulldogs, English bulldogs and pugs presenting with brachycephalic airway syndrome to a referral teaching hospital. \ud Materials and Methods: In this retrospective study, ptyalism, regurgitation and vomiting were graded at presentation using a previously established scoring system. Staphylectomy and nares resection were performed on all dogs. Gastrointestinal signs were re-assessed via telephone follow-up at least 6 weeks after surgery. \ud Results: Ninety-eight dogs were included: French bulldogs (n=43), English bulldogs (n=12) and pugs (n=43). Overall population prevalence of all gastrointestinal signs was 56%. Breed-specific prevalence for French bulldogs was 93%, English bulldogs 58% and pugs 16%. There was post-surgical clinical improvement in gastrointestinal signs for the whole study population, especially in French bulldogs. \ud Clinical Significance: The prevalence of gastrointestinal signs in dogs presenting with brachycephalic airway syndrome and improvement in these clinical signs following corrective surgery may vary between breeds.

Three West Highland white terriers were presented for investigation of left-sided para-aural abscessation. CT revealed chronic otitis media with extensive osseous proliferation surrounding the horizontal and vertical ear canals contiguous with the expanded temporal bone, consistent with a unilateral variant of craniomandibular osteopathy. A left total ear canal ablation with lateral bulla osteotomy was performed in all dogs. An ultrasonic bone curette (Sonopet; Stryker) proved useful when removing the osseous proliferation in two dogs. Histopathological examination of the ear canals was consistent with craniomandibular osteopathy and the treatment led to resolution of the presenting clinical signs in all dogs. To our knowledge, this is the first report of craniomandibular osteopathy engulfing the external ear canal, presumably leading to chronic otitis media and para-aural abscess formation. This is also the first reported use of an ultrasonic bone curette in canine otic surgery.

Objective To describe video-otoscopy-guided tympanostomy tube placement in 12 cavalier King Charles spaniels with middle ear effusion and assess the clinical outcome. Methods A retrospective review of medical records of cavalier King Charles spaniels diagnosed with middle ear effusion and treated with tympanostomy tubes placement between 2012 and 2014 was performed. Outcome was assessed based on a telephone questionnaire. Results Twenty-two tympanostomy tubes were successfully placed in the tympanic membrane in 12 cavalier King Charles spaniels under video-otoscopic guidance using a rigid endoscope and grasping forceps. Follow-up based on an owner questionnaire was available for 11/12 dogs. Subjective improvement in hearing was observed in 9/11 dogs with three dogs achieving normal hearing, according to the owners, and six demonstrating partial improvements. Out of 11 dogs, 10 dogs were reported with improved quality of life. Pruritus of the ears resolved in 3/9 dogs. Clinical signs recurred in four dogs because of tube dislodgement. Clinical Significance Video-otoscopic tympanostomy tube placement appeared to be indicated as a treatment for middle ear effusion in cavalier King Charles spaniels. It subjectively improved hearing, pruritus and quality of life in most dogs. The tympanostomy tubes dislodged in some cases, leading to recurrence of clinical signs, which were effectively eliminated by replacement of a fresh tube.

A variance based sensitivity analysis of the parameters used has been performed to give insight on the inlfuence of their uncertainties on the overal uncertainty of the number of cells present. This analysis was performed for single fraction treatments of radiation, heat, or a combination of the two treatments.

Combined radiotherapy and hyperthermia offer great potential for the successful treatment of radio-resistant tumours through thermo-radiosensitization. Tumour response heterogeneity, due to intrinsic, or micro-environmentally induced factors, may greatly influence treatment outcome, but is difficult to account for using traditional treatment planning approaches. Systems oncology simulation, using mathematical models designed to predict tumour growth and treatment response, provides a powerful tool for analysis and optimization of combined treatments. We present a framework that simulates such combination treatments on a cellular level. This multiscale hybrid cellular automaton simulates large cell populations (up to 107 cells) in vitro, while allowing individual cell-cycle progression, and treatment response by modelling radiation-induced mitotic cell death, and immediate cell kill in response to heating. Based on a calibration using a number of experimental growth, cell cycle and survival datasets for HCT116 cells, model predictions agreed well (R2 > 0.95) with experimental data within the range of (thermal and radiation) doses tested (0–40 CEM43, 0–5 Gy). The proposed framework offers flexibility for modelling multimodality treatment combinations in different scenarios. It may therefore provide an important step towards the modelling of personalized therapies using a virtual patient tumour.

The study objective was to compare temporal-spatial and kinetic gait variables in neurologically normal French bulldogs with and without vertebral kyphosis. French bulldogs presented to a dedicated brachycephalic clinic were prospectively enrolled. All dogs underwent general physical, orthopaedic, and neurological examination prior to study inclusion. The presence of vertebral kyphosis was evaluated by computed tomography and kyphosis was defined as a Cobb angle exceeding 10°. Gait variables were collected using a pressure-sensitive GAITRite walkway with GAITFour software and included measurement of total pressure index (TPI) defined as the sum of peak pressure values recorded from each activated sensor by a paw during mat contact. Fifteen French bulldogs with (n=8) and without kyphosis (n=7) were included. Cobb angle in kyphotic dogs ranged from 14.9° to 39.5°. Congenital vertebral malformations are common incidental findings in small breed dogs. This retrospective observational study evaluated the type and prevalence of thoracic vertebral malformations in 171 neurologically normal and 10 neurologically abnormal screw-tailed brachycephalic dogs. Neurologically normal dogs underwent CT for reasons unrelated to spinal disease, while affected dogs underwent MRI. Imaging studies were reviewed and vertebral malformations including hemivertebrae, block vertebrae, transitional vertebrae, and spina bifida were documented. The group of clinically normal dogs consisted of 62 French bulldogs, 68 Pugs and 41 English bulldogs. The group of affected dogs consisted of one French bulldog and nine Pugs. Overall, 80.7% of neurologically normal animals were affected by at least one vertebral malformation. This work extends the quasi-equilibrium relaxation theory of sound absorption in liquids to the case of continuous distribution of relaxation times. Such extension is needed when absorption mechanisms are not confined to the action of viscosity and heat conduction, but are mainly due to the excitation of a large number of internal molecular degrees of freedom. In this case the conventional Navier–Stokes equations are not sufficient to describe the fluid motion, and additional equations are required to model normal relaxation stresses. When relaxation frequencies form a sufficiently dense distribution, as is the case for many biological fluids, it makes sense to consider the limit of continuously distributed relaxation frequencies, in order to obtain the required equation for normal relaxation stresses. In contrast to its discrete counterparts, the proposed method avoids the use of a potentially infinite number of relaxation equations for a given set of distinct relaxation frequencies. Instead, these are replaced by a single evolution equation of Boltzmann type whose right-hand side is a linear combination of the time derivatives of density and entropy. The rheological functions appearing before these derivatives are expressed in terms of the absorption coefficient. Since the dependence of absorption coefficient on sound frequency is measurable experimentally, these rheological coefficients can be recovered from experimental data. The key feature of the present study is that a closed system of equations of motion can be formulated directly from absorption measurement data on the basis of the theory proposed for the very wide range of absorption laws that can occur in practice. As an illustration of the generality of the present method, a number of absorption laws documented in the experimental literature are considered in detail, in order to derive the coefficients of the related systems of equations of motion for these liquids. For example, the methodology based on modelling of acoustic absorption in biologically soft tissue by the employment of fractional derivatives, which has been recently developed in the literature, is shown to be a special case of the proposed theory.

Background: Age-related hearing loss (ARHL), or presbycusis, is the most common form of acquired hearing loss in dogs. Middle ear implants have been used successfully in people with ARHL who cannot benefit from conventional hearing aids. Hypothesis: Audibility improves in dogs with ARHL after implantation of the Vibrant Soundbridge (VSB) middle ear implant. Animals: Three Beagle dogs with ARHL, mean age 11.1 years. Methods: The dogs were assessed pre- and postoperatively by brainstem-evoked response audiometry (BERA), otoscopy, and computed tomography scans of the ears. A VSB middle ear implant was implanted unilaterally. Three months later the functionality of the implants was assessed by auditory steady-state responses (ASSRs), after which the dogs were euthanized for histopathological examination. Results: The VSB was implanted successfully in all dogs. Recovery from surgery was uneventful, except for transient facial nerve paralysis in 2 dogs. ASSRs showed that hearing improved after activation of the implants with a mean of 20.7, 13, and 16.3 dB at 1, 2, and 4 kHz, respectively. The implantation procedure did not affect residual hearing (with inactive implants) as measured by BERA. Conclusions and Clinical Importance: Implantation of the VSB resulted in lower ASSR thresholds, but only at the higher gain settings of the audioprocessor. As in humans, a more powerful audioprocessor is required to treat sensorineural hearing loss exceeding 20 dB in dogs. A substantial improvement in patient-owner communication will have to be demonstrated in future studies before the procedure can be recommended in clinical practice.

Lingual abscessation is a rare condition in dogs. Very little information is available on the diagnosis and treatment of lingual abscesses in the major surgical textbooks and current veterinary literature. The common clinical signs of lingual abscesses are macroglossia, hypersalivation and a reluctance to open the mouth, but these can vary depending on the time course of the disease and the location of the abscess. This article presents three cases of tongue abscess in the dog outlining treatment and outcomes. A thorough diagnostic work up, consisting of anamnesis, clinical and haematological examinations, oral inspection under sedation and the use of diagnostic imaging techniques should be mandatory before surgical exploration of the abscess. Surgery is followed by drainage and systemic antibiotics, complemented by systemic fluid support and pain management. Conservative management of lingual abscesses can be fatal. Sharp trauma from an unknown object is suspected to be the underlying cause for the abscesses in the present cases.

A method was developed to deliver tonebursts ranging in frequency from 1 to 32 kHz for frequency-specific assessment of the canine cochlea. Brainstem auditory-evoked responses (early latency responses, 0-10 ms) to a click (CS) and to 1-, 2-, 4-, 8-, 12-, 16-, 24-, and 32-kHz toneburst stimulations (TS) were compared at 80-dB sound pressure level stimulus (SPL) intensity in 10 adult dogs. All stimulations yielded a 5-7 positive wave pattern, with the exception of the 1-kHz TS, which evoked a frequency-following response (FFR). Thresholds were lowest for the CS and the 12- and 16-kHz TS. All individual peak latencies for TS were significantly (P < or = .05) longer than for CS. Peak I latencies were significantly (P < or = .05) shorter for the 12- and 16-kHz TS than for the other TS. Interpeak latencies I-V were significantly (P < or = .05) longer for the 4- to 32-kHz TS than for CS. Differences in interpeak latencies I-III were not significant. Amplitudes of waves I and V were significantly (P < or = .05) lower for TS than for CS, except for higher wave V amplitude (P < or = .05) at 2- and 32-kHz TS. Peak I-V amplitude ratios were significantly (P < or = .05) higher for the 2-, 4-, 16-, 24-, and 32-kHz TS and lower for the 8- and 12-kHz TS, compared to CS. We conclude that reproducible information on frequency specificity of the canine cochlea can be obtained by TS. This report provides a normative database for parameters needed to evaluate frequency-specific hearing loss in dogs.

This legislation represents a significant move towards liberalisation of abortion in Malawi. Those supporting the legislation have founded their arguments mainly on the premise that it will protect women and reduce maternal mortality. We join with them to express our concern with the high number of maternal deaths in the country and firmly assert our commitment and role to ensure that no woman dies from pregnancy-related complications. Aside from the maternal mortality arguments, many of those supporting this legislation take a “pro-choice” position, insisting that the rights of a woman who is pregnant supersede any rights of her unborn child, sidelining both male (parental) responsibility and the responsibility of society to take charge of the wider societal issues raised by “unwanted” pregnancies.

OTITIS externa is a common disease in dogs, and Proteus and Pseudomonas species are frequently cultured from chronic cases ([Welch Fossum 2002][1], [Krahwinkel 2003][2]). A three-year-old female spayed labrador retriever was presented with progressive abdominal enlargement due to ascites. Clinical examination, clinical pathology, diagnostic imaging and explorative laparotomy findings were suggestive of the contemporary presence of a ruptured perinephric pseudocyst, and an intraparenchymal renal cyst in the right kidney. The dog recovered well after exploratory celiotomy with complete resection of the pseudocyst and nephrectomy, and clinical signs resolved completely. Histopathology revealed the concomitant presence of a renal cyst, lined by epithelium of tubular origin, with a pseudocystic structure adjacent to the kidney. A congenital origin of these lesions was suggested. To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first report describing ascites as the clinical presentation of a ruptured perinephric pseudocyst in a dog. Although rare, it should be considered as a differential diagnosis in dogs presenting with ascites.

Background: Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) is the most common form of hearing loss in humans and is increasingly recognized in dogs. Hypothesis: Cochlear lesions in dogs with ARHL are similar to those in humans and the severity of the histological changes is reflected in tone audiograms. Animals: Ten geriatric dogs (mean age: 12.7 years) and three 9-month-old dogs serving as controls for histological analysis. Methods: Observational study. Auditory thresholds were determined by recording brainstem responses (BERA) to toneburst auditory stimuli (1, 2, 4, 8, 12, 16, 24, and 32 kHz). After euthanasia and perfusion fixation, the temporal bones were harvested and processed for histological examination of the cochleas. The numbers of outer hair cells (OHCs) and inner hair cells (IHCs) were counted and the spiral ganglion cell (SGC) packing density and stria vascularis cross-sectional area (SVCA) were determined. Results: A combination of cochlear lesions was found in all geriatric dogs. There were significant reductions (P .001) in OHC (42%, 95% confidence interval [CI]; 24–64%) and IHC counts (21%, 95% CI; 62–90%) and SGC packing densities (323, 95% CI; 216–290) in the basal turn, SVCA was smaller in all turns. The greatest reduction in auditory sensitivity was at 8–32 kHz. Conclusions and Clinical Importance: ARHL in this specific population of geriatric dogs was comparable histologically to the mixed type of ARHL in humans. The predominance of histological changes in the basal cochlear turn was consistent with the large threshold shifts observed in the middle- to high-frequency region.

Background: It is assumed that the hearing of dogs becomes impaired with advancing age, but little is known about the prevalence and electrophysiologic characteristics of presbycusis in this species. Hypothesis: As in humans, hearing in dogs becomes impaired with aging across the entire frequency range, but primarily in the high-frequency area. This change can be assessed quantitatively by brainstem-evoked response audiometry (BERA). Animals: Three groups of 10 mixed-breed dogs with similar body weights but different mean ages were used. At the start of the study, the mean age was 1.9 years (range, 0.9–3.4) in group I, 5.7 years (3.5–7) in group II, and 12.7 years (11–14) in group III. Methods: In a cross-sectional study, the BERA audiograms obtained with toneburst stimuli were compared among the 3 groups. In a longitudinal study, changes in auditory thresholds of group II dogs were followed for 7 years. Results: Thresholds were significantly higher in group III than in groups I and II at all frequencies tested, and higher in group II than in group I at 4 kHz. The audiograms in group II indicated a progressive increase in thresholds associated with aging starting around 8–10 years of age and most pronounced in the middle- to high-frequency region (8–32 kHz). Conclusions and Clinical Importance: Age-related hearing loss in these dogs started around 8–10 years of age and encompassed the entire frequency range, but started and progressed most rapidly in the middle- to high-frequency area. Its progression can be followed by BERA with frequency-specific stimulation.

A study of the feasibility of detecting broadband high frequency emissions (6-12 MHz) generated by acoustic cavitation activity during clinical high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) exposures are presented. The ability to monitor acoustic emissions, drive power fluctuations and audible (1-20 kHz) emissions is demonstrated in ex vivo tissue, and the utility of active cavitation detection (ACD) is shown. It is shown that power fluctuations, ACD and audible emissions are most sensitive to large boiling bubbles due to acoustic scattering. A significant difference is observed between the amplitude of high frequency broadband emissions detected from cavitation activity in degassed water and those emanating from 2.5 cm below the surface of bovine liver tissue ex vivo due, in part at least, to the greater attenuation of higher frequency signals in tissue. This, and the noise level in the detection system, suggests that it may be impractical to detect acoustic cavitation using these emissions at clinically relevant depths in tissue (up to 15 cm)

The work focuses on the derivation of a lossy wave equation for ultrasound absorption in media with the power law of absorption, which plays an important role in bio-medical applications. Possible forms of nonlinear lossy wave equations are also discussed. The properties of the non-linear pressure fields resulting from the implementation of different non-linearity models are investigated. This part of the study is illustrated with the numerical computations of the related linear and nonlinear equations.

LCT-1, LCT-2 and LCT-5 were assessed in uninjured rats and rats subjected to a cortical freezing injury or middle cerebral artery (MCA) occlusion. Apart from animals receiving no treatment, other uninjured or injured animals received methylprednisolone (2 or 30 mg/kg) or the 21-aminosteroid U-74389F (10 mg/kg) one day and 2 hours before killing. The animals were killed by decapitation 1 hour after the freezing injury or the MCA occlusion and the area containing the lesion was removed and frozen in Freon. Frozen sections were treated with rabbit polyclonal anti-LCT antibody; binding of antibody was visualized by horseradish peroxidase-conjugated swine antirabbit antibody. Without steroid pretreatment, in the uninjured brain LCT immunoreactivity was absent in the greater part of the brain, except in sporadic microglia. In steroid-pretreated animals and in the freezing lesion of both pretreated and untreated animals there was extensive immunostaining; in the freezing lesion it may be due to passage of systemic LCT across the impaired blood-brain barrier in the lesion. The cellular elements showing immunostaining were meningeal cells, neurons, ependyma, choroid plexus, oligodendroglia and capillary endothelium. It implies that also in the brain the steroid effect is consistent with LCT formation.

The thermal enhancement of radiation-induced damage in pig skin has been investigated. Heating at 43 degrees C for 60 min was produced by a scanned 3MHz ultrasound transducer, immediately after single doses of X rays. The ED50 values for the dermal reactions of dusky/mauve erythema and necrosis after irradiation alone were 18.6 +/- 0.5 Gy and 20.5 +/- 0.4 Gy, respectively. The reduction in the ED50 values to 15.3 +/- 0.4 Gy and 17.7 +/- 0.5 Gy after irradiation plus heating was significant and suggested a thermal enhancement ratio (TER) of between 1.15 and 1.22. These TER values were within the range obtained in both pig and rat skin using other 'dry' heating methods. This would suggest that the non-thermal effects of ultrasound do not influence the thermal enhancement of x-irradiation damage.

The temperature distributions that may be achieved in mammalian tissues by ultrasonic heating have been studied. Thigh muscle of Large White pigs has been irradiated with 0.75 and 3.0 MHz ultrasound at spatial average intensities in the range 1.5-3.0 W cm-2 in both pulsed and continuous modes of delivery. Resultant temperature profiles are described and some of the problems arising are discussed.

3 siblings with symmetrical calcifications in the strio-pallido-dentate system are described. Parathyroid function was normal and there were no signs of central or peripheral myelinopathy. This is the 9th family reported with autosomal recessive idiopathic strio-pallido-dentate calcinosis and the first to be investigated by computerized tomography (CT). CT scans appeared to be superior to plain skull radiograms to assess the localization and the extent of the calcifications in vivo. The calcifications were the least extensive in the youngest and the most extensive in the eldest. It is suggested that the calcifying process is a progressive disorder. It seems to start in the dentate nuclei and pons, and subsequently extends to the basal ganglia and to the radiation of the corpus callosum.

No significant differences were found when the obstetric outcome of 515 rural adolescents aged 16 years and younger was compared with that of an equal number of matched young adult rural women aged 20-29 years in respect of booking status, postpartum haemoglobin content, operative/instrumental delivery, mean neonatal birth mass and the incidence of infants weighing under 2,500 g. These results support the conclusions of recent studies in Australia and the USA that adolescence per se confers no increased obstetric risk. On the other hand, unwed motherhood (among all age groups) constitutes a most disturbing social trend in black rural society and this, rather than teenage pregnancy as such, ought to be the focus of concern for social workers and the medical profession.

To guide the discussion, a series of proposals, or statements, (controversial to a varying extent) were presented by the chairman and displayed for panelists and audience to examine. It was explained that these represented or resembled ideas that had been advanced at one time or another by one or more individuals. For each of the proposals, one of the panelists was asked to give a brief initial assessment, after which the topic was opened to discussion by other members of the panel, and the audience.
