Many oxide additives have historically been used to enhance the radiation shielding properties of glasses, yet the potential of high-entropy oxides (HEOs), which have gained popularity in material science for their unique properties, has not been explored in this context. This study is the first to investigate the radiation shielding capabilities of Zinc-Tellurite glass infused with High Entropy Oxide (HEO), specifically utilizing the novel attributes of a synthesized TiZrNbHfTa. In this study, the nuclear shielding properties of newly fabricated Zinc-Tellurite glasses doped with TiZrNbHfTaO x with a composition (25ZnO·75TeO 2)100-x. (TiZrNbHfTaO x)x (x = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 mol%) were studied. Through the synthesis of a TiZrNbHfTa HEA and its integration into glass structure, we have developed a series of novel materials with enhanced protective properties against both gamma-ray and neutron radiation. Experimental results demonstrate that the HEO-infused glass, particularly the HEC1-4 composition, significantly surpasses traditional shielding materials in neutron attenuation, evidenced by its superior effective neutron removal cross-section. Additionally, the HEC1-4 glass demonstrates improved gamma-ray shielding capabilities, with increased mass attenuation coefficients and decreased half-value layers, indicating a higher capacity for photon interaction and absorption. It can be concluded that the incorporation of High Entropy Alloys into glass matrices not only opens a new frontier in radiation shielding materials but also provides a versatile and effective solution with considerable potential for enhancing safety measures in radiation-prone environments. It is known that X‐ray CT of organic polymer materials usually provides low‐contrast images because of the low X‐ray absorption of these materials. In this paper, we describe a new method to enhance the contrast of X‐ray CT images of organic polymer materials. We demonstrate that gamma‐ray irradiation of poly (ethylene terephthalate) (PET) fibers in dichloromethane containing 2‐bromoethyl methacrylate, 2‐chloroethyl methacrylate, or 4‐bromostyrene results in the grafting of halogen‐containing oligomeric chains onto the PET fibers. Focused ion beam scanning electron microscopy (FIB‐SEM) and time‐of‐flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF‐SIMS) analyses revealed a homogeneous distribution of bromine atoms within the 2‐bromoethyl methacrylate‐modified PET fibers, not only on the surface. This uniform incorporation translated to a significant improvement in X‐ray CT image contrast compared with pristine fibers. Similar treatment of polypropylene pellets also enhanced the contrast of their X‐ray CT images. This is a new simple and effective method to enhance the X‐ray CT image contrast and potentially applicable to various polymer materials including polymer composites and porous polymer materials, readily allowing the observation of their 3D microstructures finely. The Tb3+/Dy3+ co-doped Boro-Phosphate Glass (BPANZDyTb) was produced (40 B2O3 + 39P2O5 + 5 Al2O3 + 5 NaF + 10 ZnO + 0.5 Tb2O3 + 0.5 Dy2O3) using melt-quenching technique. X-ray diffraction measurements, Raman, and Fourier Transform Infrared were used to evaluate the structural behavior of the prepared glass. Powder-XRD spectra, in the 10–90° range showed that the prepared glass was amorphous. FTIR analysis reveals that the network contains a variety of structural groups, including B-O-B, BO4, BO, P-O, PO2, P-O-B, and PO4 units. The UV–visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy was used to record and study the optical linear properties of Tb3+/Dy3+ co-doped Boro-Phosphate Glass (BPANZDyTb). The photoluminescence excitation peak was obtained at 348 nm. The emission peaks were located at 484 nm (4F9/2 → 6H15/2 → blue), 576 nm (4F9/2 → 6H13/2 → yellow), and 662 nm (4F9/2 → 6H11/2 → red). Tb3+ ions are located at 412 nm (5D3 → 7F5), 441 nm (5D3 → 7F4), 546 nm (5D4 → 7F5), and 625 nm (5D4 → 7F3). The result of CIE 1931 chromaticity coordinates indicate that the prepared glass is suitable material for cold white light emitting diode applications due to its color coordinates x = 0.3106 and y = 0.3240 and correlated color temperature (CCT) values about 6768 K. The gamma-ray parameters such as half-value layer (HVL), mass attenuation coefficient (μ/ρ), mean free path (MFP), and effective atomic number (Zeff) of the BPANZDyTb glass were studied using Phy-X software. The results of the gamma-ray parameter show that the Dy3+ ions and Tb3+ ions co-doped BoroPhosphate glass is an appropriate material for radiation shielding applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Early Bartonian Reneiche/Siouf member is one of the primary conventional carbonate oil/gas reservoirs to be assessed in Tunisia that demands detailed evaluation. Accurate zonation and modeling of this reservoir require an integrated approach combining surface and subsurface studies. This research focuses on the depositional, diagenetic, and stratigraphic factors affecting reservoir quality and porosity within the Reneiche/Siouf member, utilizing an integrated surface-subsurface analysis. The primary aim is to understand the reservoir zonation of the Reineche Member near Kerkennah archipelago (eastern Tunisian offshore) and its lateral equivalents in central Tunisia the Siouf Member (outcrop analogue). Gamma-ray and sonic logs from the Reineche Member in the southern and southeastern Pelagian Platform (Tunisian offshore) identify three distinct limestone units (A, C, and E). These units transition into a single mud-dominated limestone unit (C) to the east and northeast of the Kerkennah archipelago. In contrast, the western Pelagian Platform (onshore) and Central Tunisia present a different stratigraphy for the Reineche/Siouf Member, comprising two limestone units: the Lower Reneiche Limestone (LRL) and the Upper Reneiche Limestone (URL), corresponding to Units C and E, respectively, separated by the Upper Reneiche Shale (URS) unit. Reservoir porosity and permeability analyses of the outcrop analogs reveal hybrid pore types (depositional and diagenetic), including intragranular, biomouldic, and vuggy pores, resulting from significant dissolution of large bioclasts. In the northern Gulf of Gabes, the Nummulite barrier of the Reineche Member (SW of the Kerkennah archipelago) demonstrates substantial reservoir quality improvement, with porosity reaching up to 30% in Unit C, attributed to intense dissolution, dolomitization (intercrystalline porosity), and fracturing. Diagenetic processes observed in the Siouf Member (Central Tunisia) differ from those in the Reineche Limestone Member (Pelagian Platform). In the Reineche Member, CO2-rich fluids entering through faults and fissures during deep burial diagenesis drive dissolution and dolomitization. Conversely, in the Siouf Member, these processes occur due to short subaerial exposures during meteoric to shallow-burial diagenesis. A key outcome of our study is the comparison between Central Tunisia and the eastern Tunisian offshore, highlighting local tectonic control on reservoir thickness and identifying three upward-thickening sequences in the Siouf Member outcrop. This research is crucial for understanding the Gulf of Gabes and Libyan offshore nummulitic Eocene reservoirs, emphasizing the role of tectonics and sea level changes in shaping reservoir characteristics. In the present investigation, conventional melting techniques were employed to fabricate the fluorophosphate glass composites with a composition of 20NaF–60P 2 O 5 –20Na 2 O–3Fe 2 O 3 (mol.%). An investigation was conducted to analyze the impact of various doses of gamma-ray irradiation on certain optical properties. The alteration in the localized defects caused by gamma irradiation can explain the reduction in the refractive index (n) as the doses of gamma-ray irradiation increase, up to 10 kGy. The results of the solar skin protection factor (SSPF) and solar material protection factor (SMPF) tests demonstrate that the un-irradiated composite offers the highest level of protection against the harmful effects of solar energy on both human skin and materials. Some optical parameters, such as the concentrations of the charge carrier (N opt), the relaxation time (τ), the optical electronegativity (η opt), and the optical mobility (μ opt) showed gamma dose-dependent. The effects of gamma-ray irradiation on the composites were analyzed using Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic studies, both before and after exposure to 10 and 20 kGy. Corundum‐structured Sn‐doped indium oxide (rh‐ITO) is investigated as a novel transparent conductive oxide. Herein, its gamma‐ray tolerance up to a total dose of 77 kGy is examined for potential applications in harsh environments, such as space. The investigations are conducted on rh‐ITO with Sn concentrations of 0 and 5 at%. X‐ray diffraction 2θ‐ω scan analysis reveals that no phase separation occurs due to gamma‐ray irradiation. The carrier concentration in undoped rh‐In2O3 increases after irradiation, indicating that the gamma rays displace the oxygen atoms and form oxygen defects that generate donors. The high visible light transparency of rh‐In2O3 and rh‐ITO is maintained after irradiation. This study demonstrates the high stability of rh‐ITO to gamma‐ray irradiation until 77 kGy dose. The newly proposed materials demonstrated outstanding and effective radiation shielding capabilities and promising mechanical properties. A series of (20-x) SrO-(73)B 2 O 3 -(5)TeO 2 -(1)ZnO-(1)Bi 2 O 3 doped with x-Dy 2 O 3 have been produced employing the traditional melt-quench process, with the concentration of Dy 2 O 3 varying from 0.05 to 1.5 mol%. This research examined glass samples' structural stability, mechanical and thermal characteristics, and radiation shielding capabilities. All of the glasses were amorphous, as confirmed by the X-ray examination, and the glass with the label SBTZBD6 had the maximum density because of the higher Dy 2 O 3 content. The insert of Dy 2 O 3 into the glass composition increased density values from 2.94 to 3.04 g/cm3 for SBTZBD1 and SBTZBD6 and improved mechanical properties such as Poisson ratio and elastic moduli. The hardness Vickers showed the maximum value at 1095.7 HV corresponding to Dy 2 O 3 1 mol%, indicating the influence of Dy 2 O 3 addition on the mechanical properties. The ability of the generated samples to shield against several forms of radiation, such as alpha, proton, neutron, and gamma radiation, was examined using SRIM and Phy-X software. The lowest HVL is 0.009 cm for SBTZBD6 at 0.02 MeV, the highest HVL was observed at 15 MeV with a value equal to 7.066 cm for the same sample. Dy 2 O 3 was used instead of SrO, significantly increasing the μ/ρ values and improving radiation shielding. However, it was discovered that fast neutron shielding experienced a reduction in energy loss per unit mass (mass stopping power) when SrO was replaced with Dy 2 O 3. However, the substitution also reduced energy loss per unit mass for alpha and protons and fast neutron shielding. Chili peppers were treated with gamma irradiation to develop anthracnose disease resistance. Seeds of chili peppers were irradiated with gamma rays at 0, 100, 200, 300, 400 and 500 Gy to determine the optimal dose for mutation breeding. The LD50 value was calculated to be 264.83 Gy. The 300 Gy gammairradiated chili pepper seeds (Capsicum annuum L.) were planted in the experiment field at Nan Agricultural Research and Development Center, Thailand for mutation selection. The results showed that the irradiated chili plants not only survived the anthracnose infection but also produced fruits. These fruits were less affected or unaffected by the anthracnose disease compared to the control group (unirradiated) which showed damages on every part of chili plant. The 28 healthy chili pepper plants in M3 generation that showed anthracnose resistant traits were selected as seeds for M4 generation. Two chili pepper lines in M4 generation exhibited the highest resistance to anthracnose. From the pathogenicity test, those 2 chili pepper lines were found to have resistance to anthracnose disease caused by both Colletotrichum gloeosporioides and Colletotrichum capsici. The study aims to develop a novel, lead-free, flexible and lightweight composite shielding material against ionizing radiation. For this, it was used bismuth oxide (Bi2O3) in RTV-2 silicon matrix. The shielding tests were carried out in both diagnostic X-ray energies and intermediate gamma-ray energy range of up to 662 keV to determine the radiation attenuation properties of this material in terms of attenuation ratio, half value layer, tenth value layer, mean free path and lead equivalency of samples in weight of 30%, 40%, 50% in Bi2O3. In the diagnostic X-ray energy range, half value layer, tenth value layer and lead equivalency (in mm Pb) of the produced samples were measured at 80 and 100 kVp narrow beam conditions according to the requirements of EN IEC 61331-1 standard. The results show that lead equivalent values of the produced novel sheets was measured to be 0.16 mm Pb, corresponding to a 6 mm thickness of the flexible sample when it contains 30% wt. Bi2O3 in RTV matrix. The experimental findings for durability and flexibility also indicated that this new RTV-based flexible, lead -free shielding composite can be used safely for especially for manufacturing aprons, garments and thyroid guards used in mammography, radiology, nuclear medicine and dental applications in practice.

The current work aims to fabricate metal oxide-doped (PbO, Fe2O3, MgO, and Al2O3, each of which boasts a purity of 99%) zinc barium borate glasses through the melt quenching technique at the 1000 °C melting temperature. The results showed that adding 5 mol.% of metal oxides PbO, Fe2O3, Al2O3, and MgO increases the density of the zinc barium borate glasses. Additionally, the fabricated glasses' mechanical properties were determined based on the Makishima-Mackenzie model, which proved that the highest mechanical properties were achieved for glasses doped with Al2O3 compounds. The mechanical moduli for the glasses doped with Al2O3 reach 80.95 GPa (Young), 59.90 GPa (bulk), 31.75 GPa (shear), and 102.23 GPa (longitudinal). Additionally, the Al2O3-doped glasses' microhardness reaches 4.77 GPa. Moreover, estimation of the fabricated glasses' gamma-ray shielding capacity utilized Monte Carlo simulation. The highest linear attenuation coefficients are 29.132, 19.906, 19.243, and 18.923 cm−1 obtained at 0.033 MeV for glasses dopped by PbO, Fe2O3, MgO, and Al2O3, respectively. Therefore, glasses doped with 5 mol.% of PbO have high gamma-ray shielding capacities followed by glasses doped by Fe2O3.

The current study investigated Saudi Arabian oil fly ash impacts on Egyptian clay bricks' structural and radiation shielding properties. To produce the required bricks, crushed clay minerals from the Hafafit area were mixed with 0, 10, 20, 30, and 40 % wt.% Saudi Arabian oil fly ash and pressed at a pressure rate of 68.55 MPa. Identification of the minerals in the chosen clay was achieved via X-ray diffraction. Additionally, the material's morphology and chemical composition were determined through scanning electron microscope and energy-dispersive X-ray. The fabricated bricks' density was reduced by 36.3 % through increasing the concentration of fly ash from 0 to 40 wt%. Then, the fly ash addition's influence on the fabricated clay bricks' γ-ray shielding properties was investigated by Monte Carlo simulation, which found a reduction in the fabricated bricks' linear attenuation coefficient (LAC) by 41.2, 36.0, 33.8, and 33.8 % at the 0.059, 0.103, 0.662, and 1.252 MeV γ-ray energies, respectively. The LAC reduction caused an increase in the fabricated bricks' half-value thickness, transmission factor, and the equivalent thickness of the lead. Moreover, the thicker fabricated sample thicknesses were found to have high γ-ray shielding capacity and can thus be used in radiation shielding applications.

The effect of PbO addition with different concentrations on four synthesized zinc titanium borate glasses with the chemical formula xPbO-(75-x) B2O3-10ZnO-10BaO-5TiO2 (x = 30, 35, 40, and 45 mol%) was explored in this study. The partial PbO substitution for B2O3 increases the fabricated glasses' density by ≈ 20% from 5.31 to 6.37 g/cm3, respectively, with raising the PbO concentrations between 30 and 45 mol.%, respectively. Besides, the substitution mentioned above enhances the gamma-ray attenuation properties where the linear attenuation coefficient increased between 69.911 and 102.245 cm−1 (at 0.033 MeV), 0.341–0.415 cm−1 (at 1 MeV), and 0.200–0.262 cm−1 (at 10 MeV), increasing the PbO concentration between 30 and 45 mol.%, respectively. Simultaneously, increases in the PbO concentration within the fabricated glasses decrease the lead's equivalent thickness between 3.82 and 2.61 cm (at 0.033 MeV), 2.35–1.93 cm (at 1 MeV), and 2.81–2.14 cm (at 10 MeV). In contrast, substituting PbO for B2O3 compounds diminishes the fabricated glasses' mechanical properties, where the microhardness decreased by 13.5 % from 4.24 to 3.67 GPa. The lead equivalent thickness (Deq) values at 0.66 MeV were found equal to 2.410, 2.232, 2.078, and 1.945 cm, and at 1.112 MeV, these values were found equal to 2.222, 2.081, 1.956, and 1.829 cm for G1, G2, G3, and G4, respectively.

Composite materials based on a polymer matrix of linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) and W were produced by thermal pressing. The content of W in the samples varied from 0 to 70 %. The recycling properties of LLDPE are demonstrated in this study, which significantly helped to reduce the defects. The microstructure of the composites consists of well-defined W grains covered by elastic LLDPE fibers. A homogeneous distribution of tungsten in the polymer matrix was observed for sample W70. The EDX analysis showed the presence of tungsten and carbon (from the polymer component). The XRD analysis confirms the increase in W content in the samples. The FTIR spectra of the composites showed an increase in the content of terminal methyl groups, a decrease in the molecular weight, and a decrease in the degree of crystallinity of the polyethylene matrix with an increase in the W content in the composite. The sample with 70 % W content has the highest effective density (2.61 g/cm3). The sample relative density ranges from 93.3 to 97.7 %. The porosity of LLDPE-W composites does not exceed 7 %. Gamma radiation shielding efficiency parameters such as LAC, HVL, and MFP were calculated using Phy-X/PSD. The radiation source was Co60, with an emission range of 0.8–2.5 MeV. As the gamma energy increases, it is observed that the values of all the parameters deteriorate. However, the sample with a maximum W content of 70 % has the best values of LAC, HVL, and MFP among the other samples.

Ceramic concretes, with their exceptional durability and ability to incorporate a high percentage of heavy metal oxides, are of critical importance for nuclear radiation facilities, offering superior radiation attenuation characteristics essential for long-term safety and protection. This study presents a detailed evaluation of the gamma-ray shielding properties of various concrete composites, including Standard Concrete and Heavy Concretes (HC series), with densities ranging from 1.94 g/cm3 to 4.54 g/cm3. Utilizing computational methods, we analyzed several gamma-ray and neutron shielding parameters such as mass attenuation coefficients, linear attenuation coefficients, half and tenth value layers, mean free paths, exposure build-up factors, effective atomic number (Z eff), effective electron density (N eff), fast neutron effective removal cross-section (Σ R), and photon transmission factors (TFs). Our research reveals that the shielding efficacy of concrete is intrinsically linked to its density and elemental composition, with higher densities and the incorporation of heavy elements leading to enhanced attenuation capabilities. Among the concretes studied, Limonite with Steel Punch LS-a, which contains 74.53% Fe in its structure, exhibited the lowest transmission factors (TFs) across all tested thicknesses and energy levels (0.662, 1.1732, and 1.3325 MeV), indicating its superior photon attenuation potential. It can be concluded that the concrete samples with a higher Fe (iron) content in their structure demonstrate clear superiority in gamma-ray attenuation properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Electrons in circular motion emit electromagnetic radiation and lose their energy and angular momentum, both of which are carried away by the radiation field. Electromagnetic radiation from such electrons is not only circularly polarized but also, in general, possessing helical phase structure, the former of which corresponds to spin angular momentum and the latter orbital angular momentum. Based on the classical electrodynamics, we show that the chiral topological property related to the orbital angular momentum arises from deformation of the electromagnetic field due to the relativistic effect. Abstract The newest method for recycling waste linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) is the thermo-catalytic degradation technique known as catalytic pyrolysis. Typically, it is limited by 500–800 °C high temperatures. Catalytic pyrolysis releases toxins and forms harmful carbonized char. The current study is based on exposing wasted LLDPE to different gamma irradiation doses and then pyrolysis in castor oil (150–300 °C). The output product of Ir-(rLLDPE) is turned into another compound with a new structural architecture (sponge-like). SEM analysis confirms conversion, showing sponge-like spicules and layers. Ir-(rLLDPE) is sponge-like with a soft, malleable, absorbent texture. The DSC demonstrates altered thermal properties, with a melting point at 121 °C splitting into two peaks (endothermic at 117 °C and exothermic at 160 °C). The exothermic peaks signify the curing process of the sponge-like material. Ir-(rLLDPE) is assessed as an adsorbent for aqueous oils and solvents. The study examines irradiation doses, pyrolysis temperature, and time on adsorbent capacity. The oil removal obeys the Langmuir isotherm with monolayer adsorption, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 24.75 g/g of waste oil and 43 g/g of 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane. Squashing maintains adsorption after 20 reuses. Data shows sponges effectively clean marine oil spills and solvents.

Introduction: The use of radiation has become a way of life in most countries around the globe. The utilization of nuclear techniques in the area of agriculture, defense, and power generation has increased over the last few decades. Radiation technology is widely used to produce changes in product characteristics leading to the development of new products. Radiation-mediated morphological, structural and/or functional changes in a plant are governed by the intensity and duration of the gamma irradiation. Gamma irradiation was found to increase plant productivity. Gamma rays represent one of the important physical agents used to improve the characters and productivity of many plants (e.g. rice, maize, bean, cowpea, and potato). Gamma irradiation also has been found to be very useful for both sterilization and for the preservation of food and cereal grain in nutrition and agriculture. Gamma rays were also found to cause modulation in protein patterns by inducing the appearance and/or disappearance of some protein bands. It has been shown that large DNA strands were broken into small strands at low irradiation doses but small and large DNA strands were broken at higher irradiation doses. Also it has reported that germination of seeds can be influenced in both positive and negative directions by gamma radiation exposure as a result of mutation inductions depending on cellular abnormalities or stimulatory modifications triggered by radiation doses. In several studies, lethal and stimulatory effects of gamma irradiation on germination percentage, emergence, and survival of seedlings of different plant species have been reported. The present work has been intended to investigate the response of corn seeds exposed to gamma irradiation (25 Gys) in terms of the nutritional performance of its forage and silage compared with control non-exposed seeds.Materials and Methods: Corn seeds were obtained from the Vegetable Crop Seed Production and Technology section, Ghezlagh Farm, College of Abouraihan, university of Tehran, Iran. Four kg corn seeds (single cross 704) were divided into 2 groups. The first group did not have any treatment to serve as a control, while the second group was irradiated with Gamma rays (25 Gray) using Gamma cell – cobalt- 60 instruction and with the rate of 0.55 Gr/ min at the Nuclear Agricultural Research School, Nuclear Science and Technology Research Institute, Karaj, Iran. Field experiments were conducted during the summer seasons at Ghezlal farm Research Station located at the southwest of Tehran province, Varamin, to study the effect of gamma irradiation (25 Gray) on the performance of corn forage and silage. After irradiation, control and irradiated seeds were cultivated in 2000 m2. Agricultural practices such as: irrigation, weeding, fertilization, and pest control were carried out as recommended. Samples of corn plants were obtained at the late stage of growth and amounts of proline, soluble carbohydrate, and protein were determined. Performance chrematistics of experimental groups were also recorded. After harvesting, the corn forage was chopped and transferred to an experimental silo made of polyethylene pipe. DM, ash, CP, NDF, and ADF of experimental silages were determined according to standards procedures. The pH of silage also was determined using pH meters. For the determination of gas production parameters, 200 mg of dry samples were incubated at gas production environment and the amount and rate of gas production were recorded at a different time of incubation (0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 12, 24, 48, 72 and 96 h). Using gas production parameters, the amount of OM digestibility, ME, NEL, and SCFA were also determined. Data were analyzed using the t-student test of SAS software (ver. 9.1). The 'Improved White Ponni' (IWP) rice variety, which is susceptible to lodging, leading to yield losses. Our primary goal is to develop new rice lines with non-lodging traits, enhancing stem strength and resistance to adverse conditions. Additionally, we aim to improve yield-contributing agronomic traits, benefiting farmers, food security, and the environment. Our work contributes to scientific knowledge and addresses a significant issue in Southern Indian rice cultivation. In the present study, early and semi-dwarf early mutants of IWP were developed without altering the native grain quality traits using gamma ray-mediated mutagenesis. The seeds (500) were irradiated with γ-rays after fixing the Lethal Dose 50 (LD50), and selection for semi-dwarfism and earliness was imposed on a large M2 population. The selected traits were confirmed by evaluating the M3 lines at morpho-physiological, biochemical, and molecular levels. The response of mutants to gibberellic acid has been studied, which identified responsive mutants as well as slow-responding mutant lines including IWP-11-2, IWP-48-2, IWP-50-11, and IWP-33-2. Agar plate assay indicated low α- amylase content in IWP-50-11, IWP-33-2, IWP-43-1, IWP-47-2, and IWP-18-1. The scanning electron microscopy demonstrated that the mutants displayed an increased cellular dimension in comparison to the wild type. In dwarf mutants, null alleles were observed for the SD1 gene-specific primers which depicts gene undergone mutation. TID effects occur in MOS-gated transistors in radiation environments where proton and gamma-rays irradiate the devices. TID effects seriously affect the electrical characteristics of Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistor (MOSFET). They can eventually result in the malfunction of power systems when exposed to long-term radiation conditions. We irradiated gamma-rays and protons into 1.2 kV SiC MOSFETs and evaluated the change in electrical properties to analyze the TID's effects. As a result of the experiment, the threshold voltage (VT) and on-resistance (Ron) of 1.2 kV SiC MOSFETs decreased because positive fixed charges inside the oxide increased depending on the radiation dose of the gamma-ray and fluence of the proton irradiations. The degradation of breakdown voltage (BV) occurred owing to a change in the depletion curvature at the edge of termination regions owing to the trapping of the charge in the field's oxide. The influence of vibrations on the position of the target in the interaction chamber of the ELI-NP facility represents an important element in any experiment with gamma beam rays. Also, several detection systems are provided around the interaction chamber for tracking the nuclear reactions that occur inside the interaction chamber. They are fixed with very high precision in relation to the interaction chamber. In addition to tracking the gamma ray beam, it must to know with great precision the position of the sample holder and of these detectors placed in laboratory. The precision required for a gamma-ray experiment is determined by the size of the studied material. If there is enough target material, then the precision is not important, but if we have a very small amount of material, then precision becomes significant. For a common experiment, accuracy is considered satisfactory for a value of 2µm. We investigated the effects of gate bias regarding the degradation of electrical characteristics during gamma irradiation. Moreover, we observed the punch through failure of 1.2 kV rated commercial Silicon Carbide (SiC) Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistors (MOSFETs) due to the influence of gate bias. In addition, the threshold voltage (VT) and on-resistance (Ron) of the SiC MOSFETs decreased significantly by the influence of gate bias during gamma irradiation. We extracted the concentration of carriers and fixed charge (QF) in oxide using N-type SiC MOS capacitors and Transmission Line Measurement (TLM) patterns to analyze the effects of gamma irradiation. The Total Ionizing Dose (TID) effect caused by high-energy gamma-ray irradiation resulted in an increase in the concentration of holes and QF in both SiC and oxide. To analyze the phenomenon for increment of hole concentration in the device under gate bias, we extracted the subthreshold swing of SiC MOSFETs and verified the origin of TID effects accelerated by the gate bias. The QF and doping concentration of p-well values extracted from the experiments were used in TCAD simulations (version 2022.03) of the planar SiC MOSFET. As a result of analyzing the energy band diagram at the channel region of 1.2 kV SiC MOSFETs, it was verified that punch-through can occur in 1.2 kV SiC MOSFETs when the gate bias is applied, as the TID effect is accelerated by the gate bias. AbstractThe specific activity concentrations of naturally occurring radionuclides in soil samples collected from suburban areas of Assosa City was measured using a High purity Germanium (HPGe) detector. The average specific activity concentrations of 238U and 232Th exceed the recommended safe value of 35.0 and 30.0 Bq kg−1, respectively. For 40K, the average activity concentration is below the recommended safe value of 400.0 Bq kg−1. The calculated mean value of the absorbed dose rate is 72.8 ± 3.72 nGy h−1 which exceed the recommended safe value of 59 nGy h−1. The calculated mean annual effective dose equivalent values for indoor and outdoor are 2.11 ± 0.1 mSv y−1 and 0.52 ± 0.02 mSv y−1, respectively. The calculated mean values of the internal hazard index, external hazard index, and gamma index are 0.43 ± 0.013, 0.56 ± 0.01, and 0.5 ± 0.01, respectively, and those values are below the recommended safe value of one. The mean value of excessive lifetime cancer risk is above the threshold value of 0.29 × 10−3. From this study, it is recommended that Assosa soil needs further investigations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The current work deals with studying the influence of cheap, widespread CaO on improving the γ ray-protection capacity of the lightweight, sealing polyester. Therefore, polyester composites were filled with different concentrations of CaO fillers. The fabricated CaO-reinforced polyester composites' density ranged between 1.177 g/cm3 and 1.377 g/cm3, when CaO filler concentrations increased between 0 wt% and 60 wt%, respectively. Fabricated composites' morphology and chemical composition, as well as CaO fillers' grain size and distribution, were proved using SEM and EDX spectroscopy. Additionally, the influence of CaO fillers on the gamma-ray shielding properties of the fabricated composites was evaluated using the Monte Carlo simulation and confirmed using the experimental measurements. The recorded results show an enhancement in the synthesized composites' linear attenuation coefficient from 0.091 cm−1 to 0.106 cm−1 at a gamma ray energy of 0.662 MeV. Moreover, the excess in CaO concentration from 0 wt% and 60 wt% reduces the fabricated composites' half-value thickness values from 7.64 cm to 6.51 cm, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The newest method for recycling waste linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) is the thermo-catalytic degradation technique known as catalytic pyrolysis. Typically, it is limited by 500–800 °C high temperatures. Catalytic pyrolysis releases toxins and forms harmful carbonized char. The current study is based on exposing wasted LLDPE to different gamma irradiation doses and then pyrolysis in castor oil (150–300 °C). The output product of Ir-(rLLDPE) is turned into another compound with a new structural architecture (sponge-like). SEM analysis confirms conversion, showing sponge-like spicules and layers. Ir-(rLLDPE) is sponge-like with a soft, malleable, absorbent texture. The DSC demonstrates altered thermal properties, with a melting point at 121 °C splitting into two peaks (endothermic at 117 °C and exothermic at 160 °C). The exothermic peaks signify the curing process of the sponge-like material. Ir-(rLLDPE) is assessed as an adsorbent for aqueous oils and solvents. The study examines irradiation doses, pyrolysis temperature, and time on adsorbent capacity. The oil removal obeys the Langmuir isotherm with monolayer adsorption, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 24.75 g/g of waste oil and 43 g/g of 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane. We report a comprehensive investigation on customization process of Oxide Dispersion-Strengthened alloys through Sm 2 O 3 , Pr 2 O 3 , and Er 2 O 3 incorporation into 316L stainless steel matrix in terms of a desired enhancement in structural, physical, and nuclear radiation shielding properties. Oxide powders are incorporated into 316L stainless steel powder all with the same purity of 99.5%. These were Erbium oxide (Er 2 O 3), Praseodymium oxide (Pr 2 O 3), and Samarium oxide (Sm 2 O 3). First, X-Ray diffraction and Scanning Electron Microscope/Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analyses are conducted in order to investigate their physical and structural properties. Next, two different experimental setups are employed using a133Ba and 241Am/Be sources for the measurements of gamma-ray and neutron transmission properties of Oxide Dispersion-Strengthened alloys. The maximum density increment is achieved through Er 2 O 3 compared to other reinforced oxides. The detector counting value reached its minimum level when a 5% Er 2 O 3 oxide dispersion was introduced into the 316L SS matrix. Similarly, the most significant degree of photon absorption, the highest values of mass attenuation coefficient, lowest half value layer, and most effective atomic number, were all attained by the same sample. Based on the findings derived from the investigation, it can be concluded that incorporating Er 2 O 3 oxide into 316L steel can be considered as a viable option in terms of enhancing the critical properties of Oxide Dispersion-Strengthened alloys for extreme conditions such as nuclear reactors and other similar fields, where the behavioral attributes of the utilized materials are at utmost importance. We propose a future mission concept, the MeV Astrophysical Spectroscopic Surveyor (MASS), which is a large area Compton telescope using 3D position sensitive cadmium zinc telluride (CZT) detectors optimized for emission line detection. The payload consists of two layers of CZT detectors in a misaligned chessboard layout, with a total geometric area of 4096 cm 2 for on-axis observations. The detectors can be operated at room-temperature with an energy resolution of 0.6% at 0.662 MeV. The in-orbit background is estimated with a mass model. At energies around 1 MeV, a line sensitivity of about 10 - 5 photons cm - 2 s - 1 can be obtained with a 1 Ms observation. The main science objectives of MASS include nucleosynthesis in astrophysics and high energy astrophysics related to compact objects and transient sources. The payload CZT detectors weigh roughly 40 kg, suggesting that it can be integrated into a micro- or mini-satellite. In this study, using the MCNP Monte Carlo code, the gamma-ray protection properties of the glass system with the composition of (55-x)Bi2O3-15Pb3O4-20Al2O3-10ZnO-xTiO2 with certain concentrations (35, 30, 25, 20, 15, 10, 5 = mol percent) were examined by calculating the several parameters related to photon attenuation such as half-value layer (HVL), mean free path (MFP), mass attenuation coefficient (𝜇m), effective atomic number (Zeff) and buildup factor (BF) for different energies in the range of 1500-100 keV. To verify the simulation results, a comparison was made with the XCOM database. It was observed that the data extracted from the NIST-XCOM database and the MCNP simulation results are in reasonable agreement with each other. The percentage deviation (PD) between the data extracted from the NIST-XCOM database and the results obtained from the MCNP simulations was less than 0.59% in most cases. The results show that compared to conventional protective materials such as concrete and lead, the new composition shows more effective attenuation parameters in addition to physical properties. The glass with the highest concentration of TiO2 has the most favorable properties in terms of density compared to the investigated protective materials. In this study, one of the variance reduction methods was used in order to reduce the error in MCNP calculations. The agreement between the data extracted from the NIST-XCOM database and the results of the simulations of this study shows that Monte Carlo modeling is an effective method to investigate gamma-ray shielding characteristics.

In the event of unanticipated events or emergency situations, such as equipment malfunctions or accidents, it is crucial for radiation shielding materials to preserve their structural integrity. Enhancing the fracture resistance of glasses has a wide range of benefits that extend to safety, durability, cost savings, energy efficiency, environmental considerations, technological innovation, consumer confidence, manufacturing efficiency, and reduced downtime. This research examines the characteristics of sodium-borate glasses with a nominal composition of 25Na2O-xGa2O3-(75-x)B2O3, (where x: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 27.5, and 30 mol%). The aim is to enhance fracture resistant qualities and radiation absorption with the addition of Ga2O3 into the glass composition. In addition to elastic moduli and mechanical properties, gamma-ray and fast neutron removal cross section values are determined for each glass sample. In addition to enhancing mechanical characteristics and elastic moduli, the use of Ga2O3 reinforcement has shown notable improvements in the gamma-ray and fast neutron absorption properties of sodium-borate glass samples. The NGB31.4 sample demonstrated the highest level of improvement in gamma-ray and neutron absorption characteristics. For example, the mass attenuation coefficients were calculated as 1.86645 cm2/g, 1.92189 cm2/g, 1.98875 cm2/g, 2.04052 cm2/g, 2.10506 cm2/g, 2.16271 cm2/g, and 2.17266 cm2/g for NGB5, NGB10, NGB15, NGB20, NGB25, NGB30.5, and NGB31.4 at 15 MeV photon energy, respectively. This enhancement was accomplished by incorporating Ga2O3 into the baseline sample at a mole percentage of 31.4 %. Hence, it can be concluded that the incorporation of Ga2O3 into sodium-borate glasses has the potential to serve as a systematic mechanism, leading to enhancements in mechanical strength and radiation absorption characteristics, thereby making these glasses more suitable for their intended applications. Among these samples, the greatest level of integration observed was 31.4 % mole Ga2O3. The lack of ability to examine the behavioral alterations resulting from higher Ga2O3 content in sodium-borate glasses may be regarded as a limitation of the present study. However, it is very advisable to do more research among the scientific community to thoroughly explore the potential impact of Ga2O3 on sodium-borate glasses.

This study presents a new approach towards the production of sol-gel silica-coated Bi2O3/Gd2O3 cement additives towards the improvement of early mechanical performance and radiation attenuation. Two types of silica coatings, which varied in synthesis method and morphology, were used to coat Bi2O3/Gd2O3 structures and evaluated as a cement filler in Portland cement pastes. Isothermal calorimetry studies and early strength evaluations confirmed that both proposed coating types can overcome retarded cement hydration process, attributed to Bi2O3 presence, resulting in improved one day compressive strength by 300% and 251% (depending on coating method) when compared to paste containing pristine Bi2O3 and Gd2O3 particles. Moreover, depending on the type of chosen coating type, various rheological performances of cement pastes can be achieved. Thanks to the proposed combination of materials, both gamma-rays and slow neutron attenuation in cement pastes can be simultaneously improved. The introduction of silica coating resulted in an increment of the gamma-ray and neutron shielding thanks to the increased probability of radiation interaction. Along with the positive early age effects of the synthesized structures, the 28 day mechanical performance of cement pastes was not suppressed, and was found to be comparable to that of the control specimen. In this study, radiation-induced admicellar polymerization of methacrylic acid (MAA) onto the surface of cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) was conducted. The aim of the study was to use radiation-induced admicellar polymerization of MAA to obtain pH-responsive CNFs. The chemical, physical, and morphological changes of CNF-grafted poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA) were studied at various absorbed radiation doses (10–50 kGy) and MAA concentrations (0.5–1.5 M). In addition, the change in absolute zeta value of CNF-grafted-PMAA with different concentrations of PMAA grafted was measured at pH values varied from 3 to 11. The results show that 20 kGy is a sufficient gamma irradiation dose in the inert condition as proved by the highest carboxyl concentration obtained. Grafting was demonstrated by an FTIR band, specifically at 1689 cm−1, corresponding to the carbonyl stretching vibration of the carboxyl group. The cross-section of a single CNF showed an increment in diameter, with the increased amount of PMAA concentration. TGA analysis of dipole–dipole interactions and hydrogen bonding showed that admicellar polymerization was successful. Meanwhile, PMAA amorphous reduced the crystallinity index of CNFs. The absolute zeta value decreased from pH 3 to pH 9, then increased proportionally until reaching pH 11. This research shows that radiation-induced admicellar polymerization is a viable method for grafting nanosurfaces, and it can be applied to a wide variety of nanoparticles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A multiphase flowmeter (MPFM) is used in the upstream oil and gas industry for continuous, in-line, real-time, oil-gas-water flow measurement without fluid separation. An MPFM typically consists of phase-fraction and velocity measurements. It is desirable to have homogeneous flow at the measurement location so that the phase-fraction measurement is representative. A horizontal blind-tee pipe-section is often installed to homogenize flow in the downstream vertical Venturi-based flowmeters; however, little information is available on the effect of horizontal blind-tee depth (HBD) on flow homogeneity. In addition, the Venturi vertical entrance length (VEL) leading to the Venturi inlet from the horizontal blind-tee outlet is another design parameter that may potentially affect the downstream phase distribution. The phase-fraction measurement principle requires liquid properties. The local liquid richness makes the horizontal blind-tee an ideal location for measuring liquid properties; however, an excessive HBD may affect the reliability of the measurements of liquid properties, because local vortices may degrade liquid measurement representativeness if the local liquid velocity is too low. This study uses a computational fluid dynamics approach to evaluate the effect of HBD and VEL on multiphase flow measurement. [Display omitted] Colored wastewater discharge from several industries, including paper, cosmetics, leather, dying, and textile industries, is a significant environmental management issue, especially in developing countries. Copolymerization of acrylic acid (AAc) as well as gelatin (Gltn) was performed in different compositions and crosslinked utilizing gamma irradiation to form Gltn/AAc hydrogel. EDTA has modified the hydrogel to improve adsorption properties. The effect of irradiation dose, the composition of Gltn-AAc, EDTA content, and AAc content on gel percentage was studied. The swelling behavior were studied as a time function. The prepared hydrogels' surface morphologies and structure were confirmed with FTIR, SEM, as well as XRD. Modified hydrogel used in batch adsorption was studied to remove anionic and cationic dyes, namely methyl orange (MO) and methylene blue (MB), from simulated wastewater. The parameters of adsorption, like pH, time, and initial metals concentration, were studied. The removal of MB dye by modified Gltn/AAc/EDTA hydrogel was found to be greater than that of MO dye. The induction of mutants using a variety of mutagens provides new genetic resources for crop breeding. In the current study, we generated mutants in sorghum using gamma-ray treatment and conducted transcriptome analyses between a mutant line and its origin. Based on the data generated by the analysis, we predicted genes that were differentially expressed in the mutant compared to its origin and identified their functions. Gene Ontology and KEGG pathway were performed to annotate DEGs functions. Furthermore, we constructed gene co-expression networks to demonstrate the association of the identified transcription factors. We also searched for single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and insertions/deletions (InDel) which can possibly cause the alteration of gene functions. The SNP data discovered in this transcript analysis found 11 genes that appeared in common with co-expression networks and examined the associations for salt-responsiveness. Salah satu upaya yang dapat dilakukan untuk meningkatkan produktivitas dan kualitas tanaman cabai mentah varietas lokal adalah dengan mutasi genetik menggunakan sinar gamma. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui pengaruh iradiasi sinar gamma terhadap pertumbuhan dan hasil cabai merah varietas Tanjung-2. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan terdapat pengaruh iradiasi sinar gamma terhadap pertumbuhan dan hasil tanaman cabai merah varietas Tanjung-2. Berdasarkan pengamatan, tumbuhan kode 50.12 merupakan tumbuhan mutan tertinggi dengan tinggi 56,5 cm. Selain itu dari segi hasil, kode 150.2 mempunyai jumlah buah dan berat buah terbanyak dibandingkan seluruh tanaman sampel. Selain itu tanaman dengan perlakuan 350 Gy dapat menghasilkan cabai merah yang memiliki kadar capsaicin lebih tinggi dibandingkan tanaman tanpa perlakuan sinar gamma (0 Gy).

The β+-emitting radionuclide 86gY (t1/2 = 14.7 h) forms a matched-pair with the β--emitting therapeutic radionuclide 90Y (t1/2 = 2.7 d) for theranostic application in medicine. This approach demands a precise knowledge of the positron emission probability of the PET nuclide which was until recently rather uncertain for 86gY. In this work, an 86gY source of high radionuclidic purity was prepared and a direct measurement of the positron emission intensity per 100 decay of the parent (hereafter "positron emission intensity") was performed using high-resolution HPGe detector γ-ray spectroscopy. The electron capture intensity was also determined as an additional check by measuring the Kα and Kβ X-rays of energies 14.1 and 15.8 keV, respectively, using a low energy HPGe detector. From those measurements, normalized values of 27.2 ± 2.0% for β+-emission and 72.8 ± 2.0% for EC were obtained. These results are in excellent agreement with values recently reported in the literature based on a detailed decay scheme study.

Germanium crystals have a dead layer that causes a decrease in efficiency since the layer is not useful for detection but strongly attenuates photons. The thickness of this inactive layer is not well known due to the existence of a transition zone where photons are increasingly absorbed. Therefore, using data provided by manufacturers in the detector simulation model, some strong discrepancies appear by changing the dead layer. Investigations into the Ge detector response functions for gamma rays have been conducted using straightforward physical mechanisms implemented by Monte Carlo simulations. The detector response function feature's most probable interaction mechanisms are described. The Monte Carlo method is applied to simulate the calibration of a HPGe detector in order to determine the total inactive germanium layer thickness and the active volume that is needed in order to study the response function for both types of detectors. Oxyhalide glasses are utilized in the process of immobilizing nuclear waste and function as scintillating agents for the purpose of radiation detection. The objective of this study is to examine the enhanced mechanical and radiation attenuation characteristics of newly developed oxyhalide glasses by incorporating zinc-iodide. This study investigates the synthesis process, mechanical properties, and experimental gamma-neutron radiation transmission properties. A halogen-free base glass, consisting of an oxide mixture of P 2 O 5 , TeO 2 , and ZnO, was synthesized. Following that, the initial glass composition was further strengthened by the addition of zinc bromide (ZnBr 2), zinc chloride (ZnCl 2), zinc fluoride (ZnF 2), and zinc iodide (ZnI 2) in a successive manner. The experimental configuration entailed positioning circular glass samples between a 133Ba radioisotope and a Canberra High Purity Germanium (HPGe) detector. The determination of attenuation coefficients is achieved through the measurement of individual attenuation properties. Afterwards, theoretical approaches are utilized to determine the mechanical characteristics of halogenated glasses, including Young's modulus (Y), Bulk modulus (K), Shear modulus (G), Longitudinal modulus (L), and Poisson's modulus (v). The results of the study suggest that the implementation of the halogenation process on the P 2 O 5 –TeO 2 –ZnO base composition led to a significant enhancement in the examined properties. The incorporation of zinc-iodide in the halogenation process resulted in a significant improvement in the gamma absorption properties. The utilization of zinc in the halogenation process demonstrates multifunctional capabilities, which involve the potential to enhance various glass properties, including durability and gamma-ray absorption properties. It can be concluded that zinc-iodide demonstrates enhanced halogenation capabilities in comparison to zinc bromide, zinc chloride, and zinc fluoride. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ultra-high-energy (UHE, >0.1 PeV) γ-ray astronomy is rapidly evolving into an expanding branch of γ-ray astronomy with the surprising discovery of 12 PeVatrons and the detection of a handful of photons above 1 PeV. Nearly all known celestial object types that have emissions in the TeV band are found also to emit UHE photons. UHE γ-rays have a well-defined horizon inside our Galaxy due to the absorption of infrared and cosmic microwave backgrounds in the Universe. In the last 30 years, traditional cosmic ray (CR) measurement techniques have enabled the detection of UHE γ-rays and opened the last observation window. For leptonic sources, UHE radiation is in the deep Klein–Nishina regime, which is largely suppressed. Therefore, UHE γ-ray detection will be helpful in locating and identifying hadronic radiation sources, tracing the historic pursuit for the origin of CRs around the knee of the spectrum. The Crab Nebula is the focus of attention with measured photon emissions up to 1 PeV. In the absence of hadronic processes, these emissions may indicate the existence of an extreme accelerator of e+e−. Use of CR extensive air shower detection techniques broadens the field of view of the source observations, enabling measurement of UHE radiation surrounding the sources. These observations can probe the particle propagation inside and outside the accelerators and the subsequent injection/escape into the interstellar medium. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study investigates the effect of substituting tungsten(vi) oxide/gadolinium(iii) fluoride in tellurite glasses whose densities varies from 5.0879 to 5.3246 g/cm3 on gamma-ray absorption properties. A range of fundamental absorption parameters, including attenuation coefficients, half-value layer thicknesses, effective atom and electron numbers, effective conductivity, exposure, and energy absorption buildup factors, were studied for five different glass samples with varying substitution ratios. The ratio of tungsten(vi) oxide to gadolinium(iii) fluoride varied between 0 and 20 mol%, as well as the TeO2 ratio in the composition was maintained between 90 and 80 mol%. The sample with the composition of 80–20 mol% TeO2/WO3, which attained the maximum density value with 20 mol% WO3 addition, showed the highest gamma-absorption capabilities based on the obtained findings in the range of 0.015–15 MeV. In consideration of the mechanical and physical properties of WO3 in tellurite glasses, it can be concluded that WO3 incorporation is a crucial monotonic process that may be utilized to further improve the properties of glass shields.

Abstract Knowledge about the initial tectonic and depositional dynamics, as well as the influence of early rifting on climate and environmental evolution remains speculative to a large extent, because sediments are usually deeply buried. Within the East African Rift System, inversion tectonics uplifted a few of these successions to the surface hence presenting rare windows into the pre‐rift depositional history. One such example, an exceptional 700 m long and up to 60 m high fresh road cut provided the opportunity to study in detail initial rift successions of the southern Albertine Rift (Western Uganda). This focusses on the basal and poorly known Middle to Late Miocene in order to unravel the climatic, environmental, hydrological and tectonic evolution of the initial Albertine Rift. A large and robust multi‐proxy dataset was gathered comprising 169 m of stratigraphic thickness, which spans from 14.5 to 4.9 Ma according to a revised lithostratigraphic model. Fieldwork comprised logging of the sedimentary record, spectral gamma ray, magnetic susceptibility and 2D wall mapping with photomosaics. Additionally, the sections were sampled for bulk mineral and clay mineral analysis. The succession exposes a suite of lithofacies and architectural elements detailing the evolution of a fluvio‐lacustrine system. Five depositional environments were identified which show an overall back‐stepping trend from an alluvial plain to a delta plain and finally palustrine/shallow lacustrine conditions. Mesoscale base‐level cycles, preservation potential of architectural elements, and stacking pattern exhibit limited accommodation space. However, it increases over time. This overall trend indicates increasing tectonic subsidence, which can be explained by flexural downwarp within the pre‐rift phase and in the upper part grading into fault‐controlled crustal extension of the syn‐rift phase, which more and more disrupted a large‐scale river system. From the Middle Miocene up to the early Pliocene, this study revealed that palaeoclimate trends become marked by increasing and more fluctuating Th concentrations, loss of feldspar, intercalated lenses of hydroxosulphate minerals, and a shift from smectite‐dominated to kaolinite‐dominated clays. These signals are all interpreted as detrital except for the hydroxosulphates, and they mirror the increasing intensity of chemical weathering and stripping of soils in the catchment. A trend towards increasing humidity is supported by an increase in lacustrine sediment facies and a lake‐level rise. Nevertheless, intercalation of hydroxosulphate, ferricretes and pedogenised horizons prove ongoing seasonality and dry intervals. Finally, based on a revised stratigraphic model a sequence stratigraphic correlation of the outcrop's depositional cycles with basin‐scale cycles is presented. According to these cycles, transition from the pre‐rift to the syn‐rift stage is marked by an unconformity and a tectonic pulse in the latest Miocene. However, the response of fluvial supply, the depositional system as well as climate conditions are less punctuated and characterised by gradual trends and temporal delays. The long pre‐rift phase (ca 10 Myr) and the gradual transition to the syn‐rift phase is in accordance with the active rifting model, which is based on thermal thinning of the lithosphere by asthenospheric upwelling.
