Objective: Many people at risk of suicide do not actively seek help. Suicide prevention efforts need to involve the general public to provide appropriate support to those in need. It is important to investigate the intention to help those at risk of suicide and the factors associated with helping intentions in the general population. We aimed to assess the intention to help people at risk and associated factors using a national representative sample. Method: We conducted a national telephone survey of 1,087 Taiwanese adults and collected data regarding participants' socio-demographic characteristics, mental health status, helping intentions, misconceptions about suicide, and attitudes toward suicide and suicide prevention. Results: The prevalence of high intentions to help people at risk of suicide was 56.5%. Helping intentions did not differ by sex, educational level, employment status, marital status, or mental health status. Those with high helping intentions were younger, less likely to have misconceptions about suicide or agree that suicide is a personal choice, and more likely to believe that suicide is preventable and support suicide prevention measures. Conclusions: Suicide prevention education programs aimed to enhance helping intentions may usefully target debunking misconceptions about suicide and cultivating positive attitudes toward suicide prevention. This study focuses on digital platforms, such as Google or Meta, that function as "gatekeepers" that dominate their respective markets. They face serious moral legitimacy issues, due to their power to act as private rule-makers in underregulated digital spheres. Such legitimacy issues have remained underexplored thus far, as have gatekeepers' options for addressing them. Yet moral legitimacy represents a vital resource for organizations, as a justification of their essential right to exist. Drawing on recent advances in political corporate social responsibility theory, this study offers a systematic conceptualization of how gatekeepers can exhibit ethical responsibility in their efforts to gain, maintain, and sustain their moral legitimacy. This systematic conceptualization encompasses different agreement-seeking procedures, online deliberation, a hybrid governance approach that combines regulation and self-regulation, and the provision of public goods. Abstract Organizational design is composed of structure, the artifact, and coordination, the action. Existing organizational design literature lacks coherence, resulting in models that overlook the importance of coordination as an organizational design issue, which intensifies in megaprojects. We explore the roles of clients when designing megaproject organizations, identifying four coordination roles: (1) meta-organizer, (2) gatekeeper, (3) interface manager, and (4) mediator. These roles align with management levels (strategic, tactical, operational), corresponding to megaproject phases and organizational design development. The conceptual framework contributes to the organizational design literature by providing a systems-wide view and enriching the understanding of the multilevel coordination roles of clients. Functional amyloids, beneficial to the organism producing them, are found throughout life, from bacteria to humans. While disease‐related amyloids form by uncontrolled aggregation, the fibrillation of functional amyloid is regulated by complex cellular machinery and optimized sequences, including so‐called gatekeeper residues such as Asp. However, the molecular basis for this regulation remains unclear. Here we investigate how the introduction of additional gatekeeper residues affects fibril formation and stability in the functional amyloid CsgA from E. coli. Step‐wise introduction of additional Asp gatekeepers gradually eliminated fibrillation unless preformed fibrils were added, illustrating that gatekeepers mainly affect nucleus formation. Once formed, the mutant CsgA fibrils were just as stable as wild‐type CsgA. HSQC NMR spectra confirmed that CsgA is intrinsically disordered, and that the introduction of gatekeeper residues does not alter this ensemble. NMR‐based Dark‐state Exchange Saturation Transfer (DEST) experiments on the different CsgA variants, however, show a decrease in transient interactions between monomeric states and the fibrils, highlighting a critical role for these interactions in the fibrillation process. We conclude that gatekeeper residues affect fibrillation kinetics without compromising structural integrity, making them useful and selective modulators of fibril properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

AbstractCAPTCHAs are commonly used as gatekeepers to protect online services from automated bots. Previous CAPTCHA evaluations have solely focussed on whether CAPTCHA challenges are unbreakable by bots but solvable by humans and have ignored a fundamental question: what effect do these gatekeepers have on their human users? Our study proposes a more realistic approach that complements existing CAPTCHA evaluations by measuring CAPTCHA’s effect on the main task that the user wants to complete. Through our experimental setup, we show that failing to correctly answer CAPTCHAs can turn away a significant percentage of legitimate, human users. We also show that these failures have temporary knock-on effects on the quality of tasks that users later perform. Methodologically, our study also reveals limitations of current approaches to batch evaluations of CAPTCHAs that do not accurately capture the effects that ordering and variance in difficulty have on users’ CAPTCHA-solving performance. In this paper, 18 scientists from China and other countries were selected for consideration as case studies of 'strategic scientists'. They were chosen according to their involvement in science and technology policy decision-making, development of key and advantageous fields, creation of new disciplines, construction of academic traditions, and intersections between science and industry. On this basis, we found that the growth paths of strategic scientists can be divided into three phases: as talented young scientists, as gatekeepers in related disciplines or research fields, and as consultants for national science and technology decision-making. Based on this trichotomy, we explored the characteristics of strategic scientists and the conditions required for their growth in each phase. This review starts off with the first germline homozygous variants of the Nucleoporin 98 gene (NUP98) in siblings whose clinical presentation recalls Rothmund–Thomson (RTS) and Werner (WS) syndromes. The progeroid phenotype caused by a gene associated with haematological malignancies and neurodegenerative disorders primed the search for interplay between caretakers involved in genome instability syndromes and Nuclear Pore Complex (NPC) components. In the context of basic information on NPC architecture and functions, we discuss the studies on the interdependence of caretakers and gatekeepers in WS and Hereditary Fibrosing Poikiloderma (POIKTMP), both entering in differential diagnosis with RTS. In WS, the WRN/WRNIP complex interacts with nucleoporins of the Y-complex and NDC1 altering NPC architecture. In POIKTMP, the mutated FAM111B, recruited by the Y-complex's SEC13 and NUP96, interacts with several Nups safeguarding NPC structure. The linkage of both defective caretakers to the NPC highlights the attempt to activate a repair hub at the nuclear periphery to restore the DNA damage. The two separate WS and POIKTMP syndromes are drawn close by the interaction of their damage sensors with the NPC and by the shared hallmark of short fragile telomeres disclosing a major role of both caretakers in telomere maintenance. We examine the targeting effects of stricter screening in the Dutch disability insurance (DI) program induced by a nationwide reform. The drastic "gatekeeper protocol" increased application costs and revealed more information about individuals' ability to work. Discontinuity-in-time regressions on administrative data show substantial declines in DI application rates (40 percent in one year) following the reform, particularly among those with difficult-to-verify impairments and less severe health disorders. Individuals who were deterred from applying had worse health and worked less than never-applicants. This article investigates the role of missionaries in translation activities during the last six decades of the Ming dynasty in China and explores the motivations from a sociological perspective. The study identifies three ways in which missionaries carried out the act of gatekeeping, including the alteration of book subjects, the selection of collaborators, and the addition of religious texts. Drawing on Bourdieu's theory of social practice, the analysis reveals that these gatekeeping behaviours were motivated by the intricate interplay among habitus, field, and capital. The study suggests that missionaries adjusted their habitus to influence the choice of book subjects, carefully selected collaborators to navigate the translation field securely, and incorporated religious texts to enhance their standing in the religious field. Consequently, missionaries functioned as gatekeepers in translation, guided by their habitus and leveraging diverse capitals to advance their position in the social field of the late Ming dynasty, with the ultimate goal of spreading religious culture China. Reporting entities have been made jointly responsible for protecting the financial system against money laundering. However, because of privacy rules, law enforcement is not allowed to share details about underlying criminal evidence with private parties. Gatekeepers thus do not have background information on predicate offenses or other criminal acts associated with a transaction, nor do they know whether their clients are individuals who the investigative authorities designate as professional money launderers (PLMs). At the same time, gatekeepers unknowingly come across such clients who, because of their financial behaviour or other reasons, are subsequently reported to the authorities. This article examines what we can learn from these reported transactions. It combines police registrations of 264 PMLs connected to drug trafficking with Suspicious Activity Reports filed by reporting entities. It turns out that over 5,000 reported transactions are connected to 68% of the PMLs. The study also shows several differences between categories of PMLs although recurring money laundering themes are cash money flow, loans and real estate. In this paper, we critically reflect on the methodological challenges encountered during a qualitative research project that examined the effectiveness of the Australian National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). We draw on Lewis and Mehmet's (2021) approach that combines aspects of autoethnography and reflexivity to focus on three key areas, inclusive research, informed consent, and recruitment, which we have considered in terms of mistrust and the roles of the gatekeeper. This paper contributes to our understanding of researching vulnerable and marginalised populations and highlights learnings for marketers as they seek to identify how to adequately capture the voices of the often voiceless. Key implications include acknowledging vulnerability as a multi-dimensional concept, adopting a continual reflective approach, selecting appropriate channels of communication, and considering team dynamics before and during research implementation. Although an increasing amount of aggressive and polarized tweets about climate change are being observed, little is known about how they spread on Twitter. This study focuses on how different types of network gatekeepers use aggressive styles and how the styles affect their propagation. The current study employed a computational method and identified 951 influential accounts from 7.25 million tweets about climate change in 2019 and 2020. We analyzed their use of aggression and politicized cues, and the relationship with the volume of retweets. Results showed that even though aggressive tweets were a small portion of the overall tweets about climate change, aggressive tweets were more likely to be politicized and retweeted. Specifically, aggressive tweets from politicians received the most retweets and news media amplified the aggression. The findings of this study build upon the current knowledge of the use of aggression online and provide practical implications for environmental communicators. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This piece is a short essay on the first steps of the implementation of the Digital Markets Act. Our paper is divided in three sections. In the first section "Why does the DMA exist?", we come back on the genesis of the DMA and the complementing role it plays with competition law. In the second section "Challenges of Gatekeeper Designations", we look back at this first important step in the implementation of the DMA, and highlight that a key topic in the context of these designation proceedings has been the determination of the appropriate delineation of the core platform services to be designated. Finally, in the third section "Challenges of DMA compliance", we set out our high-level vision and approach for the concrete implementation of the DMA by the gatekeepers and their endeavour to comply with the various obligations and prohibitions contained in the DMA. Aquaporins (AQPs), particularly AQP4, play a crucial role in regulating fluid dynamics in the brain, impacting the development and resolution of edema following traumatic brain injury (TBI). This review examines the alterations in AQP expression and localization post-injury, exploring their effects on brain edema and overall injury outcomes. We discuss the underlying molecular mechanisms regulating AQP expression, highlighting potential therapeutic strategies to modulate AQP function. Danish schools offering "preparatory basic education and training" (FGU schools) have students that are characterized by having different academic, social, or personal problems. In addition, many FGU students are at high risk of suicidal behavior. Many young people with suicide behavior do not seek help and early identification is important for suicide prevention. Teachers are in a position where it could be relevant to implement a gatekeeper intervention. To ensure successful implementation of an intervention, it is important to establish organizational readiness for change, including its innovation‐specific capacity, which are the facilitating requirements in the organization specific to the intervention. We aimed to explore the innovation‐specific capacity to implement a gatekeeper intervention at FGU schools in Denmark. This study is based on an online survey completed by teaching staff (n = 251) at FGU schools to explore their overall knowledge about and experience with students' suicidal behavior. Limited knowledge of suicide prevention was found among teaching staff. Most knowledge was from personal experience. There is a need for teaching staff to be educated about suicidal behavior. There is a lack of innovation‐specific capacity to implement a gatekeeper intervention. Research involving young people is a challenging process that requires managing relationships with diverse individuals and groups, including the young participants and their various gatekeepers. While it is normally assumed that the researcher is in overall control of their research, by using a Foucauldian conception of 'power as effects' that operate in the form of relations and through discourse as the articulation of norms, this paper discusses how, in practice, the researcher can lose control over their research and so be forced into making substantial compromises concerning the nature and extent of the data they can collect. I do this by reflecting on my experience of conducting research involving UK secondary school students using online data collection methods during the Covid-19 pandemic. I identify several factors that generated power effects which influenced the conduct of the research, including: an ethics review that relied on a simplistic discourse concerning young participants' (in)competence; my own self-regulation of my conduct in respect of 'ethical' research; my 'positionality' in the field; and a researcher's general dependence on participants and gatekeepers to complete their research. Recent research on entrepreneurial failure has started to investigate the impact of failure on entrepreneurs and how this influences their motivation and willingness to engage in subsequent entrepreneurial ventures. We approach this topic from an alternative perspective, focusing on former entrepreneurs seeking to return to paid work and exploring how their experience of venture failure is perceived and appraised by employers in the recruitment process. Such perceptions matter because employers are gatekeepers to the employment market and thus their appraisals influence how easily former entrepreneurs can re-integrate themselves in the paid workforce. We conducted 30 interviews with employers in growing human-capital intensive companies in Sweden, asking these recruiters about their perceptions of former entrepreneurs and how their evaluations affected their hiring decisions. Conceptually, we frame our study using a process model of stigmatization by nuancing this model with fine-grained analyses of employers' perceptions and appraisals of applicants' entrepreneurial failure experiences in the recruitment process. This analysis identifies some of the key conditions that lead employers either to value or devalue an applicant's experience of entrepreneurial failure, further indicating the implications of this finding for entrepreneurs' careers and prospects of gaining paid employment. Purpose: Adolescents are particularly vulnerable to suicide attempts, which is a major risk factor for completed suicide in this age group. However, most research on suicide prevention interventions comes from high-income countries with predominantly white participants and English protocols. This study examines interventions that have been tested in Latin America and Spain. Methods: A systematic review was conducted to include interventions aimed at reducing suicide ideation, attempts, and increasing knowledge about it in these regions. Results: Sixteen articles were selected, and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, Problem Solving Therapy, and Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy were found to be more effective than standard treatments or wait-list conditions in reducing the outcomes. Discussion: This review highlights the need for more research on preventive interventions in Latin America and Spain. While all interventions evaluated were effective, further research and replication studies are necessary to strengthen the evidence base for these interventions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The resistance of multidrug-resistant bacteria to existing antibiotics forces the continued development of new antibiotics and antibacterial agents, but the high costs and long timeframe involved in the development of new agents renders the hope that existing antibiotics may again play a part. The "antibiotic adjuvant" is an indirect antibacterial strategy, but its vague concept has, in the past, limited the development speed of related drugs. In this review article, we put forward an accurate concept of a "non-self-antimicrobial sensitisers (NSAS)", to distinguish it from an "antibiotic adjuvant", and then discuss several scientific methods to restore bacterial sensitivity to antibiotics, and the sources and action mechanism of existing NSAS, in order to guide the development and further research of NSAS. The Digital Markets Act (DMA) seeks to oversee major digital platforms – “gatekeepers,” and their core platform services, aiming to break down barriers to competition enforcement within digital realm. Despite the DMA's absence of explicit mention of private enforcement, its spirit is clearly embedded within the framework. Several EU Member States have actively encouraged private enforcement of the DMA within their legislative processes. Considering the individual initiatives by the EU Member States, this paper addresses a concern: how to secure uniformity and consistency in the private enforcement of the DMA across the EU? This challenge is exacerbated by the looming threat of forum shopping, wherein plaintiffs strategically select jurisdictions to gain perceived advantages. As a solution, this paper advocates for the adoption of harmonization measures that strike a delicate balance between legal diversity and ensuring diligent oversight within the framework of private enforcement under the DMA. The proportion of outpatient visits in community health centers among the contracted significantly rose (hypertension patients coef. = 0.02, diabetes patients coef. = 0.04, both p < 0.001) due to significantly more outpatient visits in community health centers and fewer in secondary and tertiary hospitals. It also significantly mitigates the increase in inpatient admissions among hypertension patients but not among diabetes patients. Conclusions: The examined family doctor system strengthens primary care, both by increasing follow-up visits and outpatient visits and promoting a rationalized structure of outpatient utilization in China. Gatekeeper interventions are universal programs designed for use by the general public that provide brief training sessions in responding to suicidal risk. To date, the evidence base for the efficacy of gatekeeper intervention training programs has been mixed. However, little attention has been paid to potential psychological moderators of the efficacy of suicide gatekeeper interventions. We explore the potential moderating effects of suicide-related stigma and social responsibility on the efficacy of a suicide prevention gatekeeper training program. Participants were 179 college students with a mean age of 19.05 years (SD = 1.82, range 18–31). Participants were 71.5% women, 48.6% Hispanic, and 19.6% non-Hispanic White. Results indicated that higher scores on suicide-related stigma were associated with smaller intervention effects on gatekeeper self-efficacy. In contrast, higher scores on social responsibility were associated with greater intervention effects with regard to gatekeeper preparedness and gatekeeper likelihood. An improved understanding of the factors associated with efficacy of gatekeeper intervention programs may lead to the development of improved gatekeeper interventions. These findings may also contribute to the development of targeted gatekeeper interventions for specific cultural or occupational groups. Gatekeeper self-efficacy was moderated by levels of suicide-related stigma. Gatekeeper preparedness and likelihood were moderated by personal responsibility. There are no clearly defined criteria for identifying duties that are nondelegable. Indeed, whether a particular duty is properly categorized as "nondelegable" necessarily entails a sui generis inquiry, since the conclusion ultimately rests on policy considerations. Kleeman v. Rheingold, 614 N.E.2d 712, 715 (N.Y. 1993). Inevitably it becomes a matter of judgment, case by case, where to draw the line between so-called "delegable" tasks and "nondelegable" tasks and duties. NME3 is a member of the nucleoside diphosphate kinase (NDPK) family localized on the mitochondrial outer membrane (MOM). Here, we report a role of NME3 in hypoxia-induced mitophagy dependent on its active site phosphohistidine but not the NDPK function. Mice carrying a knock-in mutation in the Nme3 gene disrupting NME3 active site histidine phosphorylation are vulnerable to ischemia/reperfusion-induced infarction and develop abnormalities in cerebellar function. Our mechanistic analysis reveals that hypoxia-induced phosphatidic acid (PA) on mitochondria is essential for mitophagy and the interaction of DRP1 with NME3. The PA binding function of MOM-localized NME3 is required for hypoxia-induced mitophagy. Further investigation demonstrates that the interaction with active NME3 prevents DRP1 susceptibility to MUL1-mediated ubiquitination, thereby allowing a sufficient amount of active DRP1 to mediate mitophagy. Furthermore, MUL1 overexpression suppresses hypoxia-induced mitophagy, which is reversed by co-expression of ubiquitin-resistant DRP1 mutant or histidine phosphorylatable NME3. Thus, the site-specific interaction with active NME3 provides DRP1 a microenvironment for stabilization to proceed the segregation process in mitophagy. NME3 is a member of NDPK family. Here, Chen et. al., discover that histidine phosphorylatable NME3 is required for hypoxia-induced mitophagy via PA-dependent interaction with Drp1, which is protected from MUL1-mediated ubiquitination for mitophagy. For almost two decades, the debate on net neutrality influences the governance of the Internet infrastructure operated by Internet service providers (ISPs) and has spurred an enormous body of academic literature. However, new business models such as zero-rating, rapid technological progress, changing consumer behavior and political transformations constantly challenge our understanding of net neutrality. Despite the breadth and depth of knowledge on this topic, a conceptualization and synthesis of almost two decades of interdisciplinary literature is missing. This paper provides a comprehensive state of knowledge review based on a framework of net neutrality that captures the chronology of the debate as well as individual, organizational, and societal level concepts, which allows us to disentangle the nature, effects, and implications of different business practices of ISPs in order to extract new insights. The Digital Markets Act (DMA) aims at promoting contestable and fair markets for core platform services by setting out obligations for designated gatekeepers. As the DMA does not clearly define these objectives, it comes into conflict with national legislation with overlapping objectives. This may include unfair competition laws and sector-specific regulation. Article 1(5) DMA addresses this conflict by stipulating that Member States may not impose further obligations on gatekeepers for the purpose of ensuring contestable and fair markets. The effect this has is that national provisions vis-à-vis gatekeepers may not be applicable anymore, and competences are centralized on the European level more broadly than potentially envisaged by the European legislature. This centralization of competences runs the risk of inadvertently privileging gatekeepers by blocking national laws that are, however, still applicable to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and other firms competing with gatekeepers. The adoption of the Digital Services Act (DSA) and Digital Markets Act (DMA) has been a great step towards regulating digital space and industry. The two regulations set out a comprehensive and long-awaited set of requirements for companies providing intermediary and gatekeeping services. According to some commentators, the new laws will largely redefine the operating conditions for businesses in the digital sector. This article highlights key provisions of the DSA and DMA that may influence the evolution of the digital sector in Europe and shows that the DSA relies heavily on its predecessor, the e-Commerce Directive, and both regulations draw inspiration from other new-age EU secondary legislation, such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and industry best practices. The main conclusions of the article are the following: the changes can be considered a significant step forward from a regulatory perspective, but ‘there is nothing new under the sun’. In other words, the regulations do not fundamentally change the liability regime of intermediary service providers, but rather take a necessary step forward to further regulate these businesses. Albeit the DSA and the DMA should be praised for their layered approach on allocating different responsibilities on different size undertakings – unlike the GDPR – as the main ‘targets’ of the regulations are primarily US-based big tech companies. It is still worrying that the DSA could also increase operational costs for European startups, potentially turning them away from the continent, which in turn could produce an innovation-cooling effect in the Union.

Background: A fundamental ethical issue in African genomics research is how socio-cultural factors impact perspectives, acceptance, and utility of genomic information, especially in stigmatizing conditions like orofacial clefts (OFCs). Previous research has shown that gatekeepers (e.g., religious, political, family or community leaders) wield considerable influence on the decision-making capabilities of their members, including health issues. Thus, their perspectives can inform the design of engagement strategies and increase exposure to the benefits of genomics testing/research. This is especially important for Africans underrepresented in genomic research. Our study aims to investigate the perspectives of gatekeepers concerning genomic risk information (GRI) in the presence of OFCs in a sub-Saharan African cohort. Methods: Twenty-five focus group discussions (FGDs) consisting of 214 gatekeepers (religious, community, ethnic leaders, and traditional birth attendants) in Lagos, Nigeria, explored the opinions of participants on genomic risk information (GRI), OFC experience, and the possibility of involvement in collaborative decision-making in Lagos, Nigeria. Transcripts generated from audio recordings were coded and analyzed in NVivo using thematic analysis. Results: Three main themes—knowledge, beliefs, and willingness to act—emerged from exploring the perspective of gatekeepers about GRI in this group. We observed mixed opinions regarding the acceptance of GRI. Many participants believed their role is to guide and support members when they receive results; this is based on the level of trust their members have in them. However, participants felt they would need to be trained by medical experts to do this. Also, religious and cultural beliefs were crucial to determining participants' understanding of OFCs and the acceptance and utilization of GRI. Conclusions: Incorporating cultural sensitivity into public engagement could help develop appropriate strategies to manage conflicting ideologies surrounding genomic information in African communities. This will allow for more widespread access to the advances in genomics research in underrepresented populations. We also recommend a synergistic relationship between community health specialists/scientists, and community leaders, including spiritual providers to better understand and utilize GRI. Introduction: Gatekeeper (GK) training is a suicide prevention strategy in which community members learn to identify individuals at risk of suicide and refer them for appropriate help. Despite its widespread use, few studies have investigated its effects, including changes in helping behaviors. Aims: To assess the impact of GK training on participants' knowledge, recognition of the influence of attitudes, perceived self‐efficacy, intention to help and helping behaviors, and to identify variables associated with GK behaviors. Methods: Mixed linear effects and forward stepwise logistic regressions were used to analyze data from 159 participants receiving the Quebec Provincial GK Training program offered by five different suicide prevention centers using pretest, posttest and 6‐month follow‐up questionnaires. Results: Participants' knowledge of the GK role and suicide prevention, intention to help, self‐efficacy, knowledge of services, and recognition of the influence of attitudes significantly increased following training. Most changes decreased at follow‐up but remained higher than at pretest. Lower levels of education and higher intention to help were significant predictors of engaging in helping behaviors in the first 6 months after receiving training. Conclusions: The Quebec GK training appears to be effective in preparing participants for their role but does not appear to significantly increase helping behaviors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Designed and implemented by public servants and NGO workers, local inclusion programmes in Barcelona result in the exclusion of illegalized migrants. Access to city provisions is gained by means of a 'work plan' applied by the local authorities. Bureaucratic processes divide potential clients between those who 'deserve' to access rights and those who do not. Much of the legal framework provides leeway to practitioners to decide the fate of those left 'here, but nowhere' (Fieldwork 2019). Bureaucrats, acting as 'gatekeepers', often become 'annoyed' with their 'users'. This annoyance has the potential to illustrate how banal but resourceful emotions end up playing a key part in the exclusion of migrants from the city, strengthening institutional cohesion and a moral order. Focusing on bureaucratic processes and street-level interventions, this article tries to shed light on how borders inside the city are created not only by municipal regulations, but also by bureaucrats´ emotions. One primary concern in researching journalistic practice and media production is the difficulty of gaining research access to media organizations and their media professionals. This paper theorizes Small World Sampling method for identifying and recruiting participants for qualitative research. Based on an ethnographic interview study involving 32 journalists at six different international news organizations, our Small World Sampling method created a direct research path into journalists' professional occupational networks without having to negotiate indirect access through their non-journalist organizational gatekeepers (e.g. PR executives, HR department, managers). Small World Sampling allows the participant selection process to be guided by media practitioners' expert and in-group knowledge of their professional network of media colleagues and acquaintances. More methodologically important, our Small World Sampling protocol offers a novel technique for demonstrating the qualitative reliability of the sampling process and for establishing the qualitative validity of the sample under study. Additionally, the paper introduces the concept of 'contextual case studies' offering additional nuance and insights enriching the conclusions drawn from the project's main case studies. Beyond media and journalism research, we propose that Small World Sampling may also prove useful for other fields to facilitate research access into closed organizations, elite networks, and hidden communities. Economic interactions often involve sequential actions, observational learning, and contingent project implementation. We incorporate all‐or‐nothing thresholds in a canonical model of information cascades. Early supporters effectively delegate their decisions to a "gatekeeper," resulting in unidirectional cascades without herding on rejections. Project proposers can consequently charge higher prices. Proposal feasibility, project selection, and information aggregation all improve, even when agents can wait. Equilibrium outcomes depend on crowd size, and project implementation and information aggregation achieve efficiency in the large‐crowd limit.
