Background: Excessive alcohol consumption and consequent medical disorders are considerable problems in many countries. Aminotransferases (alanine aminotransferase ALT and aspartate aminotransferase AST) are the liver enzymes commonly used for detecting excessive drinking. Gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) is a membrane-bound glycoprotein enzyme widely used as an index of excessive ethanol intake. The aim of this study is to determine the changes in levels of ALT,AST and GGT in chronic alcoholic liver diseases. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was done and included 100 individuals (50 chronic alcoholic liver diseases cases and 50 normal controls). Serum ALT, AST, GGT were estimated by colorimetric method on fully automated chemistry analyzer. Result: Data were fed under Microsoft Excel 2007 and statistically analyzed by Graphpad software; Version 6.0, which evaluated the differences of various parameters in both groups on the basis of p value. Serum ALT, AST & GGT levels were significantly elevated in chronic alcoholic liver diseases patients as compared to normal healthy controls Conclusion: Chronic consumption of alcohol results in the secretion of pro-inflamatory cytokines (TNF alpha, Interleukin 6 [IL6] and Interleukin 8 [IL8]),oxidative stress, lipid peroxidation, and acetaldehyde toxicity. These factors cause inflammation, apoptosis and eventually fibrosis of liver parenchyma which leads to elevations in liver enzymes like AST & ALT.GGT is an enzyme produced in the bile duct. Measurement of GGT is an extremely sensitive test. It is induced by alcohol and its serum activity may be increased in heavy drinkers even in the absence of liver damage or inflammation. Background & aimsWe conducted an individual patient data meta-analysis to establish stiffness cut-off values for magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) in staging liver fibrosis and to assess potential confounding factors.MethodsA systematic review of the literature identified studies reporting MRE data in patients with NAFLD. Data were obtained from the corresponding authors. The pooled diagnostic cut-off value for the various fibrosis stages was determined in a two-stage meta-analysis. Multilevel modelling methods were used to analyse potential confounding factors influencing the diagnostic accuracy of MRE in staging liver fibrosis.ResultsEight independent cohorts comprising 798 patients were included in the meta-analysis. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) for MRE in detecting significant fibrosis was 0.92 (sensitivity, 79%; specificity, 89%). For advanced fibrosis, the AUROC was 0.92 (sensitivity, 87%; specificity, 88%). For cirrhosis, the AUROC was 0.94 (sensitivity, 88%, specificity, 89%). Cut-offs were defined to explore concordance between MRE and histopathology: ≥F2, 3.14 kPa (pretest probability, 39.4%); ≥F3, 3.53 kPa (pretest probability, 24.1%); and F4, 4.45 kPa (pretest probability, 8.7%). A fluorescent probe (probe 1) was developed for detection the activity of γ‐glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT). Probe 1 could recognize GGT by the enzymatic hydrolysis of peptide bond by GGT. There has a linear relationship between the fluorescence intensity of probe 1 at 416 nm and the activity of GGT, and the detection limit of GGT activity was 0.0796 U/mL. And the color of the probe solution gradually changed from light blue to bright yellow with the increase of GGT activity under 365 nm ultraviolet light. Importantly, the activity of GGT was linearly related to the photo of the probe solution with B/(R+G) value. Probe 1 could detect GGT activity by smartphone without professional equipment. Objective: To investigate the effect of capecitabine on the sensitivity of oxaliplatin and on the level of transcription factor forkhead box P1 (FOXP1) and gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT) in patients with intermediate and advanced gastric cancer. Methods: A total of 152 patients with intermediate and advanced gastric cancer diagnosed and treated in our hospital from April 2018 to May 2019 was selected as the research objects, and their clinical data were retrospectively analyzed. According to the different treatment methods, they were divided into the study group and the control group, with 76 cases in each group. The patients in the control group received with oxaliplatin, while the patients in the study group received with capecitabine on the basis of the control group. The therapeutic effect was evaluated according to the therapeutic effect evaluation criteria of solid tumors. The FOXP1 expression level in gastric cancer tissues was detected using immunohistochemistry. Serum levels of GGT were measured by chemiluminescence. The prognostic factors were analyzed by COX regression model, and the Kaplan-Meier survival curve was used to analyze the relationship between the influencing factors and the survival of gastric cancer. Results: The effective rate of capecitabine combined with oxaliplatin and oxaliplatin alone in the treatment of patients with intermediate and advanced gastric cancer were 94.74 % and 76.32 % respectively. Capecitabine enhanced the sensitivity of intermediate and advanced gastric cancer to oxaliplatin (P 0.05). After treatment, the low expression rate of FOXP1 and serum GGT level were both significantly decreased, and those in the study group were lower than those in the control group (P 0.05). The 1-year survival rates of the study group and the control group were 90.79 % and 78.95 %, while the 3-year survival rates of the study group and the control group were 75.00 % and 51.32 %, respectively. Background & Aims: Porto-sinusoidal vascular disorder (PSVD) is a group of vascular disorders characterized by lesions involving portal venules and sinusoids, irrespective of the presence of portal hypertension. Liver biopsy is essential for diagnosis. In a single-center study, we demonstrated high rates of PSVD in patients with persistently elevated gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT). This multicenter study aims to establish PSVD prevalence in a larger dataset of individuals with persistent and unexplained GGT elevation, and to identify associated risk factors. Methods: The study included all patients who underwent liver biopsy for persistent and unexplained GGT elevation in five Italian hepatology units between March 2015 and December 2021. Results: A total of 144 patients met the inclusion criteria. The majority were males (76/144, 52.8%) and mean age was 51.9 years (range 19-74). Only 12 (8.3%) had liver stiffness measurements (LSM) >10 kPa, while 7 (4.8%) had ultrasound evidence of portal hypertension. Histological findings were consistent with PSVD in 96 patients (67%). Alternative diagnoses were steatohepatitis in 13 (9%), sarcoidosis in 3 (2%) and congenital hepatic fibrosis in 3 (2%) patients. Histological findings were non-specific in 29 (20%) patients. Nevertheless, the connection between sdLDL-C and metabolic syndrome (MetS) remains unclear.Methods: This study retrospectively analyzed 23,187 individuals who underwent health checkups at Taizhou Hospital’s health management center. Here, we investigated the relationship between sdLDL-C and MetS, along with its components, utilizing Spearman correlation analysis, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis, logistic regression, and mediation analysis.Results: The MetS group exhibited significantly higher level of sdLDL-C compared to the non-MetS group (P< 0.001). We observed a strong correlation between sdLDL-C and several key factors: TG (r = 0.711), TC (r = 0.672), LDL-C (r = 0.781), GGT (r = 0.420), and HDL-C (r = − 0.417). After adjusting for age and gender, the odds ratio (OR) (95% confidence interval [CI]) for MetS incidence in the second, third, and fourth quartiles versus the first quartile of sdLDL-C concentration were 2.264 (95% CI: 1.851, 2.770), 4.053 (95% CI: 3.350, 4.903), and 9.034 (95% CI: 7.531, 10.837). The optimal cut-off value for diagnosing MetS using sdLDL-C was determined to be 0.98 mmol/L, with an area under the ROC curve (AUC) of 0.716 (95% CI: 0.705, 0.726). Additionally, mediation analysis revealed that sdLDL-C mediated a 12.8% correlation between GGT and TG concentration.Conclusion: The sdLDL-C is correlated with MetS and it can successfully mediate the relationship between GGT and TG. Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD) is estimated to affect upto 70–80% of people with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Although several anti-hyperglycemic drugs have been shown to be effective in such patients, there remains an unmet need for newer drugs. The objective of this meta-analysis was to analyze the effect of ipragliflozin on aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine transaminase (ALT), and gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT) levels in patients with T2DM. A literature search on electronic databases was conducted to identify potential randomized clinical trials (RCT) as per predetermined study selection criteria. Mean difference (MD) was calculated using Cochrane review manager. Twelve studies were included in the meta-analysis, including 1349 subjects. Compared to the control group, ipragliflozin as a monotherapy showed a significant reduction in levels of ALT at week 12 (p = 0.02) and at week 24 (p = 0.007), GGT at week 12 (p < 0.00001). Ipragliflozin as an add-on therapy showed significant reduction in levels of AST at week 24 (p < 0.00001), ALT at week 12 (p = 0.002), ALT at week 24 (p < 0.00001), and GGT at week 24 (p < 0.00001). Findings suggest the beneficial effects of ipragliflozin on liver enzymes. Further large-scale RCTs are required to confirm ipragliflozin's role for liver-related conditions in T2DM. Observational studies have shown an association between liver dysfunction and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), but the causality relationship between them is unclear. We aimed to determine whether there is a bidirectional causal relationship between liver function indicators (alanine aminotransferase, ALT; aspartate aminotransferase, AST; alkaline phosphatase, ALP; γ-glutamyltransferase, GGT) and HCC. Our two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) study acquired single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with liver function indicators (ALT, n = 134,182; AST, n = 134,154; GGT, n = 118,309; ALP, n = 105,030) and with HCC (n = 197,611) from publicly available genome-wide association studies (GWAS) of East Asian ancestry in Japan (BioBank Japan, BBJ). Univariable MR analyses were performed to identify whether the genetic evidence of exposure was significantly associated with outcome. Multivariable MR analysis was conducted to estimate the independent effects of exposures on outcome. Univariable MR analysis indicated that the level of ALT, AST, and GGT was the risk factor for HCC incidence. Meanwhile, multivariable MR analysis revealed that AST was an independent risk factor for HCC. The hazard ratio (HR) of the probability of HCC was 3.045 [95% confidence interval (95%CI), 1.697-5.463, p = 0.003] for AST. The results of reverse MR analyses showed that gene-predictive HCC incidence could increase the levels of AST (HR = 1.031, 95%CI: 1.009-1.054, p = 2.52 × 10-4) and ALT (HR = 1.040, 95%CI: 1.019-1.063, p = 0.005). Meanwhile, HCC may be negatively correlated with ALP levels (HR = 0.971, 95%CI: 0.947-0.995, p = 0.018). This study provides evidence to support that genetically predicted higher levels of AST are related to increased risk of HCC, with no strong evidence of a causal effect of genetically predicted ALP, ALP, and GGT on HCC. Regarding liver‐related mortality, the independent factors included cirrhosis (HR/CI: 4.36/2.79–6.89, p < 0.001), pretreatment GGT levels (HR/CI: 1.006/1.004–1.008, p < 0.001), alanine aminotransferase level (HR/CI: 0.993/0.990–0.997, p = 0.001), age (HR/CI: 1.03/1.01–1.05, p < 0.001), and fatty liver disease (HR/CI: 0.30/0.15–0.59, p = 0.001). Pretreatment GGT levels were also independently predictive of non‐liver‐related mortality (HR/CI: 1.003/1.000–1.005, p = 0.03). The results remained consistent after excluding the patients with a history of alcohol use. A dose‐dependent manner of <25, 25–75, and >75 percentile of pretreatment GGT levels was observed with respect to the all‐cause mortality (trend p < 0.001). Background: Chronic alcohol consumption is known to cause liver damage, often reflected in altered liver enzyme levels. This study aims to evaluate the extent and pattern of liver enzyme abnormalities in individuals with a history of chronic alcohol consumption. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 200 chronic alcohol consumers were selected through convenience sampling from an urban population. Participants were categorized based on their duration and frequency of alcohol consumption. Blood samples were collected and analyzed for liver enzyme levels, including Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST), Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT), and Gamma Glutamyl Transferase (GGT). Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics, with a focus on correlations between liver enzyme levels and alcohol consumption patterns. Results: Preliminary findings indicate a significant elevation in AST, ALT, and GGT levels in participants with a longer duration and higher frequency of alcohol consumption. Notably, GGT levels showed the most pronounced increase. The study also found a correlation between elevated enzyme levels and certain demographic factors, including age and gender. Conclusion: This study provides critical insights into the biochemical impact of chronic alcohol consumption on liver health. Background Diabetes is a chronic condition caused by either an absolute lack of insulin or a relative lack of insulin due to impaired insulin secretion and action. Insulin resistance and glucose intolerance results in chronic hyperglycemia and alterations in lipid and protein metabolism. Serum GGT is cell surfаce protein which has аntioxidаnt property аnd cаtаbolises extrаcellulаr glutathione. Recent prospective studies hаve suggested thаt аn elevated level of GGT enzyme is аssociаted with subsequent development complications of Diabetes. Material and Methods This is a Prospective and observational study. Patients with clinical features of diabetes mellitus admitted in medicine department, KIMS will be taken for study. Total 210 patients presenting with history,characterstic clinical signs and symptoms of diabetes mellitus are taken into study and the following investigation will be done in selected patients. Group I – Control group (n=70) This group consists of age and sex matched healthy subjects. They are taken from general population. Group II – Type 2 DM patients with good glycemic control (n=70) This group consists of patients with type 2 DM with duration less than 8 years, HbA1c level less than 7%. They are on life style modifications and oral hypoglycemic drugs and free from clinical evidence of any complication of diabetes mellitus. Group III – Type 2 DM patients with poor glycaemic control (n=70). This group consists of patients with type 2 DM with duration more than 8 years, HbA1c level more than 7.1%. They are on life style modifications, oral hypoglycemic drugs, insulin or combination of all three and associated with one or more microvascular or macrovascular complication of diabetes mellitus. Result There were 41 males and 29 females in Group I, 39 males and 31 females in Group II, and 36 males and 34 females in Group III. There were 2 patients in age group of 21-30 years, 14 patients in age group of 31-40 years, 37 patients in age group of 41-50 years, 86 patients in age group of 51-60, 62 patients in age group of 61-70 years and 9 patients in age group of 71-80 years. There was no statistically significant difference between the Groups and hence they were comparable in demographic parameters. Mean GGT in Group 1 was 20.93 4.39 U/L, in Group 2 was 36.05 6.53 U/L, in Group 3 was 47.06 6.09 U/L. Conclusion There was positive correlation between FBS, PPBS, HbA1c and GGT,FBS, PPBS, HbA1c, indicating increasing oxidative stress and inflammation in patients poor glycemic control in Diabetes Mellitus. Clinical enzymology studies the enzyme activity in serum or other body fluids for the diagnosis, prognosis or monitoring of a variety of diseases. Clinical enzymology has greatly benefited from advances in technology and is now an integral part of laboratory analysis. However, to maximise the clinical benefits of serum enzyme measurement, clinicians and clinical pathologists must have a good understanding of the pathophysiology behind serum enzyme alterations. They must also be aware of the preanalytical and analytical factors that can affect the accuracy of serum enzyme activity measurement. This review article first covers the basic concepts of clinical enzymology and the general mechanisms related to serum enzyme alterations. Then, the review discusses the potential effects of various preanalytical and analytical factors on enzyme activity measurement. Lastly, it explores the pathophysiology and clinical use of various serum enzymes in canine and feline medicine. Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), widely used throughout industry and daily life, are currently one of the environmental pollutants garnering the most attention worldwide. Recently, environmental pollutants have had a high profile as one of the main causes of chronic liver disease, such as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Research on PFAS is actively underway. Although Korea has a remarkably high prevalence of chronic liver disease, and it continues to increase, only a few studies have revealed the relationship between PFAS and liver disease. In addition, regulations on PFAS in Korea are delayed compared to developed countries, such as Europe and the United States, and public interest is insufficient compared to others. Therefore, we would like to investigate the exposure of Koreans to PFAS in the blood and examine the relationship between these substances and markers of liver function (AST, ALT, and GGT). This study was based on the results of the Korean National Environmental Health Survey (KoNEHS) 2015–2017 (Cycle 3), and a total of 2961 subjects were selected. The concentration of PFAS in the blood of Korean adults was measured to be significantly higher based on the geometric mean compared to the results of recently investigated American adults based on the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES, 2017–2018). A multivariable linear regression analysis adjusted for age, sex, body mass index (BMI), smoking status, alcohol intake, and regular exercise was performed to examine changes in three liver function markers as the serum PFAS concentration increased. We found that some of the five PFAS (PFOA, PFOS, PFHxS, PFNA, and PFDeA) were significantly associated with increased liver enzymes. It is necessary to recognize the threat of PFAS to the human body and to discuss regulations and alternatives in earnest. Continuous follow-up studies are required through a well-designed cohort. Mercuric chloride (HgCl2) pollution and poisoning has been a worldwide health ‎concern for decades, especially after the industrial revolutions. The aim of this study ‎was to investigate the role of resveratrol in reversing the deleterious effects of ‎HgCl2 exposure to resume the normal functions of hepatocyte. To achieve the study, ‎mature Sprague Dawley rats were assigned to five groups. Negative control group ‎‎(C) kept without any treatment; vehicle-treated group (D) received dimethyl ‎sulfoxide (DMSO); resveratrol-treated group (R), received 100 mg/kg of resveratrol; ‎HgCl2-intoxicated group (HD), received i.p. injection of HgCl2 at a dose of 1 mg/kg ‎for 30 consecutive days along to oral gavage of DMSO; and finally HgCl2-‎intoxicated group treated with resveratrol (HR) as same treatment strategy of R-‎group. Objective: The clinical characteristics of patients with different types of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and the correlation between serum soluble oncogenic inhibitor 2 (s ST2), γ-glutamyl transferase (GGT) expression and cardiac function were analyzed. Methods: A total of 96 patients with HCM admitted to our hospital from January 2020 to January 2023 were selected as the study objects. The HCM patients were divided into OHCM group (44 cases) and NOHCM group (52 cases) according to the measurement results of LVOTG between left ventricular outflow tract and aorta in exercise load test. The heart function of the two groups was graded according to the New York Heart Association (NYHA) . The clinical characteristics of the two groups of patients were investigated by using a self-made questionnaire, and serum s ST2 and GGT levels were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results: Compared with NYHA I + II, the levels of s ST2, GGT, LVD, LAV, LAVI, E/E ’, NT-porBNP in OHCM and NOHCM groups with NYHA ≥ III were higher, the levels of LVEF and E/A were lower, and the 6MWD was shorter (P＜0.05) . Purpose: Studies have demonstrated a high prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients. The aim was to review the effect of tofogliflozin on hepatic outcomes in T2DM patients. Methods: A literature search in PubMed, Science Direct and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials was conducted for randomised clinical trials of tofogliflozin by applying predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results: A total number of four randomised clinical trials, including 226 subjects, were included in the review. There was a significant decrease in aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine transaminase (ALT) levels in the tofogliflozin group as compared to the control or active comparator groups. Additionally, gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and magnetic resonance imaging proton density fat fraction (MRI-PDFF) levels were also significantly decreased in the tofogliflozin group. However, no significant difference was observed in levels of adiponectin. Conclusion: Overall, an improvement in levels of hepatic parameters was observed in T2DM patients with concurrent liver disorders. Background and Aim: Pemafibrate, a selective peroxisome proliferator activated receptor α modulator, has been shown to improve liver function among nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) patients with dyslipidemia. The aim of this retrospective study is to identify predictors of pemafibrate efficacy in NAFLD patients. Methods: A total of 75 NAFLD patients with dyslipidemia who received pemafibrate twice per day for 48 weeks were enrolled in this study. We used the FibroScan‐aspartate aminotransferase (FAST) score as a benchmark for treatment efficacy. Results: Median FAST score significantly decreased from 0.96 at baseline to 0.93 at week 48 (P < 0.001). Significant improvements in levels of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), gamma‐glutamyl transferase (GGT), and triglycerides were also noted. The serum level of GGT at baseline was correlated with change in FAST score (r = −0.22, P = 0.049). Changes in AST, ALT, and GGT were positively correlated with change in FAST score (r = 0.71, r = 0.61, and r = 0.38). Multivariate analyses identified age and GGT level at baseline as significantly associated with improvement of FAST score by pemafibrate therapy (odds ratio 1.11, 1.02, respectively). Patients over 50 years of age and with a GGT of 90 IU/L or higher showed significantly greater improvement in the FAST score than other groups. Conclusions: Pemafibrate improves the FAST score of NAFLD patients with complicating dyslipidemia, especially in older patients with high GGT level. Surgical resection is a curative therapy for early-stage hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC); however, HCC recurrence is not uncommon. Identifying outcome predictors helps to manage the disease. Gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) may predict the development of HCC, but its role to predict the outcomes after surgical resection of HCC was unclear. This study aimed to investigate pre-operative GGT levels for outcome prediction in patients with hepatitis B virus (HBV)-related HCC. We conducted a retrospective cohort study to include patients with HBV-related HCC receiving surgical resection. Clinical information, HCC characteristics and usage of antiviral therapy were collected. A time-dependent Cox proportional hazard regression analysis were used to predict HCC recurrence and survival. A total of 699 consecutive patients with HBV-related HCC who received surgical resection with curative intent between 2004 and 2013 were included. After a median of 4.4 years, 266 (38%) patients had HCC recurrence. Pre-operative GGT positively correlated with cirrhosis, tumor burden and significantly increased in patients to develop HCC recurrence. Multivariable analysis demonstrated that pre-operative GGT ≥38 U/L increased 57% risk (hazard ratio [HR]: 1.57, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.20–2.06) of recurrent HCC after adjustment for confounding factors. Specifically, pre-operative GGT ≥38 U/L predicted early (<2 years) HCC recurrence (HR: 1.94, 95% CI: 1.30–2.89). Moreover, pre-operative GGT ≥38 U/L predicted all-cause mortality (HR: 1.73, 95% CI: 1.06–2.84) after surgery. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA), an autoimmune disease, is characterized by inflammation that affects not only the liver but also other organs and the musculoskeletal system. The standard therapy for RA is methotrexate (MTX), which has safety limitations. The extract from Crocus sativus L. (saffron—SF) is also known for its anti-inflammatory effects. Therefore, we decided to investigate the potential benefit of SF in monotherapy via two doses (SF1—25 mg/kg of b.w.; SF2—50 mg/kg of b.w.) and in combination with MTX (0.3 mg/kg of b.w., twice a week) using adjuvant arthritis in rats. To evaluate these therapeutic settings, we used biometric, immunological, and biochemical parameters, as well as the relative gene expression of the mRNA in the liver. Our results showed a statistically significant increase in the experimental animals' body weight and the arthritic score (AS) on day 14 for monotherapy with SF1 and SF2. The change of hind paw volume (CHPV) was significant only for SF2 monotherapy on the 14th day of the experiment. A combination of SF1 and SF2 with MTX significantly modulated all the biometric parameters during the experimental period. Additionally, AS and CHPV improved considerably compared to MTX monotherapy on day 21. Furthermore, all monotherapies and combination therapies were significant for the biochemical parameter γ-glutamyl transferase (GGT) in the joint. GGT activity in the spleen was less pronounced; only MTX in combination with SF1 significantly modified this parameter. The higher dose of SF monotherapy (SF2) was similarly significant with respect to immunological parameters, such as plasmatic IL-17A, IL-1β, and MMP-9 on day 21. The combination of both doses of SF with MTX significantly improved these immunological parameters, except for C-reactive protein (CRP), which was influenced only by the higher dose of SF2 in combination with MTX in plasma at the end of the experiment. A different effect was found for the relative expression of CD36 mRNA, where only SF1 significantly decreased gene expression in the liver. However, the relative gene mRNA expression of IL-1β in the liver was significantly reduced by the SF monotherapies and the combination of both SF doses with MTX. Context The use of non-nutritive sweeteners (NNSs) is dramatically increasing in food commodities, and their effects on biochemical parameters have been the subject of great controversy. Liver enzymes as markers of liver injury may be helpful measures of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), but the outcomes of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) suggest their associations with NNSs are contentious. Objective The current study was designed to provide a GRADE-assessed systematic review and meta-analysis of RCTs studying the consequences of NNS consumption on ALT, AST, and GGT concentrations (ie, the 3 main liver enzymes in adults). Data Sources Scopus, PubMed, and EMBASE were searched for relevant studies up to April 2021, with no time and language limitations. Data Extraction Two independent researchers extracted information from qualified studies, and a third researcher rechecked it. Data Analysis Of 3212 studies, 10 studies that enrolled a total of 854 volunteers were included. A random-effects or fixed-effects model was utilized to calculate weighted mean differences (WMDs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Heterogeneity between studies was evaluated using Cochran's Q test and quantified using the I2 statistic. The pooled results demonstrated that, compared with control groups, NNS intake led to nonsignificant reductions in ALT (WMD: −.78, 95% CI: –2.14,.57, P = .25) and GGT (WMD: –.21, 95% CI: –1.46, 1.04, P = .74). Also, a small nonsignificant increasing effect on AST level was found (WMD:.02, 95% CI: –1.26, 1.30, P = .97). NNS significantly reduced AST levels in type 2 diabetes patients when subgroup analyses were performed. Also, in trials with ≥24-week intervention or studies that utilized stevioside for intervention, a significant reducing effect on ALT level was observed. Background & aimsThe accumulation of neutral lipids within hepatocytes underlies non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), which affects a quarter of the world's population and is associated with hepatitis, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. Despite insights gained from both human and animal studies, our understanding of NAFLD pathogenesis remains limited. To better study the molecular changes driving the condition we aimed to generate a humanised NAFLD mouse model.MethodsWe generated TIRF (transgene-free Il2rg -/-/Rag2 -/-/Fah -/-) mice, populated their livers with human hepatocytes, and fed them a Western-type diet for 12 weeks.ResultsWithin the same chimeric liver, human hepatocytes developed pronounced steatosis whereas murine hepatocytes remained normal. Unbiased metabolomics and lipidomics revealed signatures of clinical NAFLD. Transcriptomic analyses showed that molecular responses diverged sharply between murine and human hepatocytes, demonstrating stark species differences in liver function. Regulatory network analysis indicated close agreement between our model and clinical NAFLD with respect to transcriptional control of cholesterol biosynthesis.ConclusionsThese NAFLD xenograft mice reveal an unexpected degree of evolutionary divergence in food metabolism and offer a physiologically relevant, experimentally tractable model for studying the pathogenic changes invoked by steatosis.Lay summaryFatty liver disease is an emerging health problem, and as there are no good experimental animal models, our understanding of the condition is poor. We here describe a novel humanised mouse system and compare it with clinical data. The results reveal that the human cells in the mouse liver develop fatty liver disease upon a Western-style fatty diet, whereas the mouse cells appear normal. The molecular signature (expression profiles) of the human cells are distinct from the mouse cells and metabolic analysis of the humanised livers mimic the ones observed in humans with fatty liver. A relationship between periodontitis and liver function has been suggested. Indeed, patients with severe periodontal disease have been found to be more prone to liver dysfunction. The periodontal inflammatory surface area (PISA) has been shown to be a useful indicator of periodontal and systemic diseases. However, little information is available regarding whether the PISA is associated with liver function markers, such as gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and alanine aminotransferase (ALT). This study aimed to clarify relationship between liver function markers, AST, ALT, and GGT, and PISA level in a cross-sectional study. The subjects were recruited between 2018 and 2021 at the Medical and Dental Collaboration Center of Kanagawa Dental College Hospital. A periodontal clinical examination was performed, and the PISA was calculated. Peripheral blood samples were collected, and serum levels of liver function markers were measured. The levels of liver function markers were examined in different values of PISA. Participants with high PISA scores were more likely to have increased GGT levels while AST and ALT were not changed with PISA. Increased GGT was found in 10.8% and 29.4% (p = 0.0056), increased AST in 48.2% and 52.9% (p = 0.62), and increased ALT in 35.2% and 47.0% (p = 0.20) among <300 mm2 and ≧300 mm2 PISA groups, respectively. It was found that males with a PISA of 300 mm2 or higher had an elevated level of serum GGT. The prevalence of NAFLD and NASH is increasing worldwide, and there is no approved medical treatment until now. Evidence has emerged that interfering with bile acid metabolism may lead to improvement in NASH. In this study, 28 patients with elevated cholestatic liver function tests (especially GGT) were screened for bile acid gene polymorphisms and treated with UDCA. All patients had a bile acid gene polymorphism in ABCB4 or ABCB11. Treatment with UDCA for 12 months significantly reduced GGT in all patients and ALT in homozygous patients. No difference in fibrosis was observed using FIb-4, NFS, and transient elastography (TE). PNPLA3 and TM6SF2 were the most common NASH-associated polymorphisms, and patients with TM6SF2 showed a significant reduction in GGT and ALT with the administration of UDCA. In conclusion, NASH patients with elevated GGT should be screened for bile acid gene polymorphisms, as UDCA therapy may improve liver function tests. Objective: To investigate the relationship between serum lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)], uric acid (UA) and γ-glutamyl transferase (GGT) with coronary artery lesions and major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in patients with acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). Methods: 100 patients with acute STEMI undergoing PCI admitted to the Department of Internal Medicine-Cardiovascular of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Anhui Medical University from January 2019 to July 2022 were selected as the acute STEMI group. 56 patients were divided into the non-severe lesion group and 44 patients in the severe lesion group according to the Gensini score. The patients were followed up for 3 months after PCI and were divided into MACE subgroup and non-MACE subgroup according to whether MACE occurred. 50 patients with coronary angiography excluding coronary artery disease in the same period were also selected as the control group. Clinical data of patients with acute STEMI were collected, and serum Lp(a), UA, and GGT levels were detected. The correlation between serum Lp(a), UA, GGT levels and Gensini score in patients with acute STEMI and the influencing factors of MACE after PCI were analyzed. Results: Compared with control group, serum Lp(a), UA and GGT levels in the STEMI group were increased (P＜0.05). The Lp(a), UA and GGT levels in the severe lesion group were higher than those in the non-severe lesion group (P＜0.05). Spearman correlation coefficient analysis showed that serum Lp(a), UA, GGT levels were positively correlated with Gensini score in patients with acute STEMI (P＜0.05). 3 months after follow-up, the incidence of MACE in 100 patients with acute STEMI after PCI was 21.00%(21/100). Multivariate Logistic regression analysis showed that the increased age, KILLIP cardiac function grade≥Ⅲ, elevated Lp (a), UA and GGT were independent risk factors for MACE after PCI, and the elevated left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) was independent protective factor (P＜0.05). Conclusion: Elevated serum Lp(a), UA and GGT levels in patients with acute STEMI are closely correlated with the severity of coronary artery lesions and MACE after PCI, and may be the auxiliary predictors of MACE after PCI in acute STEMI patients. Background & Aims:A DNA methylation (DNAm) signature derived from 353 CpG sites (the Horvath clock) has been proposed as an epigenetic measure of chronological and biological age. This epigenetic signature is accelerated in diverse tissue types in various disorders, including non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, and is associated with mortality. Here, we assayed whole blood DNAm to explore age acceleration in patients with primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC). Methods:Using the MethylationEPIC BeadChip (850K) array, DNAm signatures in whole blood were analyzed in 36 patients with PSC enrolled in a 96-week trial of simtuzumab (Ishak F0-1, n = 13; F5-6, n = 23). Age acceleration was calculated as the difference between DNAm age and chronological age. Comparisons between patients with high and low age acceleration (≥ vs. < the median) were made and Cox regression evaluated the association between age acceleration and PSC-related clinical events (e.g. decompensation, cholangitis, transplantation). Introduction: Many single and combination blood tests that reflect local or systemic inflammation have been shown to be useful prognosticators in patients with a variety of tumor types. To try to clarify, this issue in patients with nonsurgically treatable hepatocellular carcinoma, multiple serum parameters were evaluated for their relationship to survival. Methods: A prospectively collected database was interrogated of 487 patients with known hepatocellular carcinoma and documented survival and having all the inflammation parameters of interest in this study, together with baseline tumor characteristics from CT scans. Serum parameters included NLR, PLR, CRP, ESR, albumin, and GGT. Results: All the parameters had significant hazard ratios on Cox regression model. Combination double parameters with hazard ratios >2.0 were: ESR plus GGT, albumin plus GGT, albumin plus ESR. The triplet combination of albumin plus GGT plus ESR had a hazard ratio of 6.33. Using Harrell's concordance index (C-index), the highest inflammation-based 2-parameter prognostic score was for albumin plus GGT. When clinical characteristics of patients with high values for albumin plus low values for GGT were compared to low values for albumin plus high values for GGT (worse prognosis), statistically significant differences were found for tumor size, tumor focality, macroscopic portal vein invasion, and serum alpha-fetoprotein levels. Addition of ESR did not provide additional tumor information. Conclusion: The combination of serum albumin plus GGT levels was the most prognostically useful among the inflammation parameters that were tested, and reflected significant differences in tumor aggressiveness characteristics. Abstract The national burden of HCV has significantly mounted over the period of last few decades placing Pakistan at the worst placement of second largest burden of HCV globally. Herein for the first time from Pakistan, we examined clinical correlation of potential biomarkers with HCV. Nation-wide study was conducted on 13,348 suspected HCV patients during 2018-2022. During pre-COVID-19 era of 2018-2019, prevalence of HCV remained 30%. During 2018, among HCV positive patients, 91% of ALT, 63% of AST, 67% of GGT, 28% of Bili T, 62% of HB, 15% of HBA1C, 25% of CREAT, 15% of PT, 15% of aPTT and 64% of AFP were abnormal. During 2019, among HCV infected 74.47% of ALT, 63.54% of AST, 70.24% of GGT, 24.71% of Bili T, 8.77% of HB and 75% of AFP were raised. CT/CAT scan revealed 4.65% liver complications (mild 13.04%, moderate 30.43% and severe 56.52%). During 2020, HCV prevalence remained 25%. 65.17% of ALT, 64.20% of AST, 68.75% of GGT, 31.25% of Bili T, 20.97% of HB, 4.65% of CREAT and 73.68% of AFP levels were raised. CAT analysis revealed liver complications among 4.41% (14.81% mild, 40.74% moderate, and 44.44% sever). 85.71% of participants diabetes was out of control. During 2021, HCV prevalence remained 27.1%. ALT (73.86%), AST (50.6%), GGT (67.95%), Bili T (28.21%), HB (20%), CREAT (5.8%) and AFP (82.14%) levels were abnormal. During 2022, the levels of ALT (56.06%), AST (56.36%), GGT (56.6%), Bili T (19.23%), HB (43.48%), HBA1C (14.81), CREAT (18.92%), AFP (93.75%) were abnormal. CAT analysis revealed 7.46% liver complications (25% mild, 30.36% moderate, and 42.86% sever). During 2021-2022, 83.33% of subject’s diabetes was not controlled.

Abstract Background The aim of this study was to evaluate the serum level of matrix metalloproteinase 7 (MMP7) in infants with cholestasis and the diagnostic values of this biomarker to differentiate biliary atresia (BA) from other causes of cholestasis. Methods This multi-center study is conducted during 2 years in Mofid children’s hospital and Children’s Medical Center, Pediatrics Center of Excellence Tehran, Iran. 54 infants with cholestasis were enrolled in this study with a control group consists of 41 healthy infants with the same age. Serum samples were taken from all these patients to assess serum levels of MMP7, Gamma-glutamyl Transferase (GGT). For each biomarker, we calculated the sensitivity and specificity and other statistical characteristics. Results There were 89 subjects, 22 patients with BA, 32 patients with non-BA cholestasis and 41 subjects as control group. The mean serum MMP7 levels in BA, non-BA cholestasis and control group was 15.91 ng/ml ± 6.64, 4.73 ng/ml ± 2.59 and 0.49 ng/ml ± 0.33, respectively. The best cut-off point is calculated 7.8 ng/ml for MMP7 and 434.5 U/L for GGT. The area under curve (AUC) for these two markers are 0.988 ± 0.008 and 0.854 ± 0.052, respectively. The sensitivity and specificity of MMP7 to differentiate biliary atresia from nonbiliary atresia cholestasis in our study was 95.5% and 94.5%, respectively. The sensitivity and specificity of GGT was 77.3% and 77.8%, respectively. These results show that the MMP7 has more sensitivity and specificity in differentiation. Conclusion MMP7 demonstrated good accuracy to differentiate biliary atresia from other causes of cholestasis.

Background Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) is a major source of alcohol-related morbidity and mortality. Heavy drinkers and alcoholics may progress from fatty liver to alcoholic hepatitis to cirrhosis. The enzyme γ-glutamyltranspeptidase (GGT) is a membrane-bound glycoprotein which catalyzes the transfer of the γ-glutamyl group from γ-glutamyl peptides to other peptides, amino acids, and water. Serum GGT activity mainly attributed to hepatobiliary system and thus is an important marker of ALD. Hence the present study is conducted to estimate and correlate the levels of GGT and osteopontin (OPN) in ALD. Aims and Objectives The objective of this study is to estimate and correlate the levels of GGT and OPN in ALD. Materials and Methods Sixty clinically diagnosed cases of ALD and sixty age- and gender-matched healthy controls were recruited for the study. Blood samples were collected from them and serum aspartate aminotransferase, serum alanine transaminases (ALTs), serum ALP levels, and plasma OPN levels were measured. This study aimed to investigate the effect of using menbutone in addition to ammonium molybdate on liver enzymes in sheep naturally poisoned with copper. Merino lambs (n = 30), naturally poisoned with copper and which also had high liver enzyme levels, were divided into two groups, each with 15 lambs. The AM + MEN group received ammonium molybdate and menbutone and the AM group received only ammonium molybdate solution. Both groups received 1.7% ammonium molybdate solution (1 mL per 10 kg body weight [BW]) subcutaneously on 0, 2nd and 4th days of the study. Menbutone (Genabil®, Boehringer Ingelheim, Germany) was administered intramuscularly at a dose of 10 mg/kg BW on days 0 and 2, in addition to ammonium molybdate in the AM + MEN group. Blood samples were collected on days 0 and 7, and aspartate aminotransferase (AST), gamma‐glutamyltranspeptidase (GGT) and creatinine levels were evaluated. Over 7 days, AST levels decreased from 351.04 ± 63.50 IU/L to 286.40 ± 55.68 IU/L in the AM group (P > 0.05) and from 425.00 ± 119.25 IU/L to 240.83 ± 29.62 IU/L in the AM + MEN group (P ≤ 0.05). GGT levels decreased from 121.16 ± 15.88 IU/L to 110.39 ± 10.13 IU/L in the AM group (P > 0.05) and 124.52 ± 15.50 to 98.60 ± 9.08 IU/L in the AM + MEN group (P ≤ 0.05). A novel ratiometric fluorescent probe for the detection of γ-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT) activity was developed. The recognition of GGT by this probe is achieved by its enzymatic hydrolysis of peptide bonds in the probe. Under optimized conditions, the probe exhibited obvious ratiometric fluorescence responsiveness after interaction with GGT, avoiding potential background interference. The linear concentration range was 0.0350–2 U / mL, with good selectivity and stability. Under a 365 nm UV lamp, as the concentration of GGT increased, the probe aqueous solution gradually changed from dark blue to light blue. In addition, the B/G value of the probe's solution and the GGT activity were linearly correlated. More significantly, the probe was able to effectively identify the GGT activity of garlic. Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), widely used throughout industry and daily life, are currently one of the environmental pollutants garnering the most attention worldwide. Recently, environmental pollutants have had a high profile as one of the main causes of chronic liver disease, such as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Research on PFAS is actively underway. Although Korea has a remarkably high prevalence of chronic liver disease, and it continues to increase, only a few studies have revealed the relationship between PFAS and liver disease. In addition, regulations on PFAS in Korea are delayed compared to developed countries, such as Europe and the United States, and public interest is insufficient compared to others. Therefore, we would like to investigate the exposure of Koreans to PFAS in the blood and examine the relationship between these substances and markers of liver function (AST, ALT, and GGT). This study was based on the results of the Korean National Environmental Health Survey (KoNEHS) 2015–2017 (Cycle 3), and a total of 2961 subjects were selected. The concentration of PFAS in the blood of Korean adults was measured to be significantly higher based on the geometric mean compared to the results of recently investigated American adults based on the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES, 2017–2018). A multivariable linear regression analysis adjusted for age, sex, body mass index (BMI), smoking status, alcohol intake, and regular exercise was performed to examine changes in three liver function markers as the serum PFAS concentration increased. We found that some of the five PFAS (PFOA, PFOS, PFHxS, PFNA, and PFDeA) were significantly associated with increased liver enzymes. It is necessary to recognize the threat of PFAS to the human body and to discuss regulations and alternatives in earnest. Continuous follow-up studies are required through a well-designed cohort.

The aim of our study was to evaluate the changes of blood plasma Gamma-glutamiltranferase (GGT) and total protein concentrations during the growth of Holstein calves. Blood samples were collected from 20 calves divided in two groups (group 1 from 1 to 3 month of age and group 2 from over 3 months to 5 months of age). Mean value of GGT in group 1 was 32.2 IU/L and 27.2 IU/L in group 2. Mean value of total protein was 7.14 g/dl in group 1 and 6.92 g/dl in group 2. The slight changes in concentrations of GGT and total protein may be related to maturity of organs initiation of specific enzymatic activities or simply physiological adaptation of calves to the new environment.

Background: Numerous observational studies have shown that liver enzymes correlated with diabetes mellitus (DM) risk significantly, but limited studies showed whether different obesity subgroups present the same correlation. Our objective was to evaluate the association of liver enzymes with DM risk in different obesity subgroups based on a middle-aged Chinese population. Methods: We conducted a population-based cross-sectional study and surveyed 9,916 people aged 40 years and above. A two-slope linear regression model was used to analyze the cutoff points of obesity in DM risk. Restricted cubic splines were used to analyze the correlation between liver enzymes and DM risk in different obesity categories. The odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using the logistic regression model. Results: The cutoff points of body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference were 30.55 kg/m² and 98.99 cm for DM risk, respectively. The serum gammaglutamyl transferase (GGT) concentration was positively correlated with DM risk in the subgroups with waist circumference <98.99 cm [OR = 1.04, 95% CI (1.03-1.05)], BMI <30.55 kg/m² [OR = 1.04, 95% CI (1.03-1.05)], and BMI ≥30.55 kg/m² [OR = 1.18, 95% CI (1.04-1.39)], but not in the subgroup with waist circumference ≥98.99 cm. Alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) concentrations have no significant correlation with the risk of diabetes in all groups. Conclusion: The results showed that serum GGT concentration was correlated with DM risk but not with AST or ALT in the middle-aged population. However, the correlation disappeared when waist circumference was over 98.99 cm, and serum GGT concentration had a limited value for DM risk in waist circumference over 98.99 cm. Globular Glial Tauopathy (GGT) is a rare form of Frontotemporal Lobar Degeneration (FTLD) consisting of 4-repeat tau globular inclusions in astrocytes and oligodendrocytes. We present the pathological findings of GGT in a previously published case of a 73-year-old woman with behavioral symptoms concerning for right temporal variant frontotemporal dementia with initial and salient features of Geschwind syndrome. Clinically, she lacked motor abnormalities otherwise common in previously published GGT cases. Brain MRI showed focal right anterior temporal atrophy (indistinguishable from five FTLD-TDP cases) and subtle ipsilateral white matter signal abnormalities. (1) Background: From the recent variants of concern of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, in which the delta variant generated more negative outcomes than the alpha, we hypothesized that lung involvement, clinical condition deterioration and blood alterations were also more severe in autumn infection, when the delta variant dominated (compared with spring infections, when the alpha variant dominated), in severely infected pregnant patients. (2) Methods: In a prospective study, all pregnant patients admitted to the ICU of the Elena Doamna Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital with a critical form of COVID-19 infection—spring group (n = 11) and autumn group (n = 7)—between 1 January 2021 and 1 December 2021 were included. Brixia scores were calculated for every patient: A score, upon admittance; H score, the highest score throughout hospitalization; and E score, at the end of hospitalization. For each day of Brixia A, H or E score, the qSOFA (quick sepsis-related organ failure assessment) score was calculated, and the blood values were also considered. (3) Results: Brixia E score, C-reactive protein, GGT and LDH were much higher, while neutrophil count was much lower in autumn compared with spring critical-form pregnant patients. (4) Conclusions: the autumn infection generated more dramatic alterations than the spring infection in pregnant patients with critical forms of COVID-19. γ-Glutamyltransferase (GGT) has been extensively studied because it mediates the intracellular uptake of extracellular glutathione, a key component of the antioxidant mechanism. The most common modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular disease is hypertension, and has been found to be associated with serum GGT levels, especially in middle-aged and older adults. Serum GGT is involved in the pathogenesis of hypertension. A case-control study was conducted for 24 months with patients with pre-diagnosed hypertension in the ophthalmology department. Patients were classified into two groups, group 1 with 50 patients previously diagnosed hypertensive patients aged 40 years without hypertensive retinopathy and group 2 (100 patients) with had hypertensive retinopathy. Serum gamma-glutamyl-transferase was measured using the CORAL Colorimetric Assay Kit. Majority of patients were aged between 40 to 59 years and were females. SBP, DBP and MAP significantly increased in group 2 when compared with group 1. Majority of group 2 patients had GGT levels >40 U/l (89.0%), while the majority of group 1 had her GGT levels less than <40 U/L (62.0%). Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the serum level of matrix metalloproteinase 7 (MMP7) in infants with cholestasis and the diagnostic values of this biomarker to differentiate biliary atresia (BA) from other causes of cholestasis.Methods: This multi-center study is conducted during 2 years in Mofid children's hospital and Children's Medical Center, Pediatrics Center of Excellence Tehran, Iran. 54 infants with cholestasis were enrolled in this study with a control group consists of 41 healthy infants with the same age. Serum samples were taken from all these patients to assess serum levels of MMP7, Gamma-glutamyl Transferase (GGT). For each biomarker, we calculated the sensitivity and specificity and other statistical characteristics.Results: There were 89 subjects, 22 patients with BA, 32 patients with non-BA cholestasis and 41 subjects as control group. The mean serum MMP7 levels in BA, non-BA cholestasis and control group was 15.91 ng/ml ± 6.64, 4.73 ng/ml ± 2.59 and 0.49 ng/ml ± 0.33, respectively. The best cut-off point is calculated 7.8 ng/ml for MMP7 and 434.5 U/L for GGT. The area under curve (AUC) for these two markers are 0.988 ± 0.008 and 0.854 ± 0.052, respectively. The sensitivity and specificity of MMP7 to differentiate biliary atresia from nonbiliary atresia cholestasis in our study was 95.5% and 94.5%, respectively. The sensitivity and specificity of GGT was 77.3% and 77.8%, respectively. These results show that the MMP7 has more sensitivity and specificity in differentiation.Conclusion: MMP7 demonstrated good accuracy to differentiate biliary atresia from other causes of cholestasis. Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a non-communicable metabolic disease resulting from either insulin deficiency or insulin resistance. Liver enzymes (ALT and AST) are the well-known markers of hepatocellular health while GGT also shows biliary tract function. Increased activities of liver enzymes are indicators of hepatocellular injury, are associated with insulin resistance and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. Aims and Objective: To study the status of Liver Enzymes in type 2 diabetes patients residing in the eastern part of Nepal. Materials and Methods: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study conducted at the Department of Clinical Biochemistry, Nobel Medical College Teaching Hospital, Biratnagar, Nepal dated from 27th Dec 2019 to 27th Dec 2020. The blood sample was taken from the patients coming to the outpatient department at Diabetic and Endocrinology Clinic for a regular check-up and follow-up and those willing to participate in research. All the data collected was entered in Microsoft Excel and Statistical Package for Social Service (SPSS) version 16. p < 0.05 was considered to be statistically significant. Results: A total of 375 subjects (255 DM and 120 healthy) were included. The age of the diabetic subjects ranges from 27-87 years with a mean of 56.91 ± 11.00 years while age of healthy subjects’ ranged from 31-86 years with the mean of 53.38 ± 13.28. Among the T2DM subjects, 11.76% (30/255) had raised AST, 17.25% (44/255) had raised ALT, 12.94% (33/255) had raised ALP, and 19.60% (50/255) had raised GGT. The level of liver enzymes (AST, p = 0.005, ALT, p = 0.007, ALP, p = 0.000 and GGT, p = 0.000) were showed statistically significant. Conclusion: This study concludes that liver enzyme activity was higher in T2DM subjects than individuals who do not have T2DM. In addition, Liver parameters were significantly correlated with diabetes mellitus in our study population; hence, timely diagnosis and management of the abnormal liver parameters may help to minimize liver-related morbidity and mortality in the diabetic population.

Medicinal plants are widely used in management of diseases all over the world. The use of natural remedies for the treatment of liver diseases has a long history and medicinal plants and their derivatives are still used all over the world in one or the other for this purpose. The present study investigated that the hepatoprotective activity of Vernonia cinerea and Camellia sinensis were studied in albino rats by using methanolic extracts of these plants. Methanolic leaves extract of V. cinerea, and C. sinensis showed hepatoprotective activity in CCl4 induced rats. The CCl4 induced rats were significantly reduced (p<0.05) the body and liver weight when compared with control rats. The hepatic enzymes such as AST, ALT, ALP and GGT were significantly (p<0.01) increased CCl4 treated group when compared with control. From this result, methanolic leaves extract of C. sinensis showed increasing level of total protein, albumin, globulin and decreased level of bilirubin. The signalment, clinicopathological findings, the presence of SIRS, final diagnosis, hospitalization time and outcome were recorded. A Cox proportional hazard ratio (HzR) were calculated to assess the association between clinicopathological variables and survival to discharge. Results: Serum Hp concentrations were similar between SIRS (0.29 g/L; range, 0.05‐3.6) and non‐SIRS calves (0.22 g/L; range, 0‐4.2; P =.62). GLDH activity was similar between SIRS (12 U/L; range, 1‐1025) and non‐SIRS calves (9 U/L; range, 2‐137; P =.2). Absent suckle reflex (HzR: 6.44, 95% CI: 1.44‐28.86), heart rate (HR) < 100 beats per minute (bpm; HzR: 12.2; 95% CI: 2.54‐58.62), HR > 140 bpm (HzR: 3.59, 95% CI: 1.05‐12.33), neutrophil count <1.7 × 109/L (HzR: 7.36; 95% CI: 2.03‐26.66) and increased gamma‐glutamyl transferase activity (every 50‐unit, HzR: 1.12; 95% CI: 1.03‐1.21) were predictive of nonsurvival. The main goal of this study was to find a link between colostrum and the 1-day-old lamb serum γ-glutamyltransferase (GGT) activity and immunoglobulin G (IgG) concentration and their relation with neonatal diseases and beyond. Further, to set a linear relationship between the serum GGT activity (SGGTA) and the IgG concentration (SIgGC) in different days of the neonatal period, thereby determining the feasibility of the GGT activity in the prediction of the colostrum quality and passive immunity and to define a cut-off point for the SGGTA associated with an increased risk of illness or death in lambs. For this purpose, blood samples were obtained from the lambs before the colostrum intake (day 0) and on different days (1, 2, 4, 7, 14 and 28) in the neonatal period. The colostrum was collected from the respective ewes (n = 254) related to the lambs. The most accurate (R2 = 0.652) model for predicting the SIgGC or passive immune status was the multiple regression model developed to calculate ln[IgG] from ln[GGT] in healthy neonatal lambs using the serum GGT and IgG values of day 0, 1, 2, 4, 7, 14 and 28. The In[GGT] activity at 24 h after birth in lambs that died or became ill during the neonatal period accounted for approximately 77% and 88% of the variation in the ln[IgG] concentration at 24 h after birth, respectively. The study revealed that SGGTA-24 > 500 IU may be considered as a critical cut-off point for the adequate colostral passive transfer. This study also disclosed that the colostral GGT activity might be used as an indicator to determine the colostrum quality.
