Among the fundamental questions in computer science is that of the impact of synchronism/asynchronism on computations, which has been addressed in various fields of the discipline: in programming, in networking, in concurrence theory, in artificial learning, etc. In this paper, we tackle this question from a standpoint which mixes discrete dynamical system theory and computational complexity, by highlighting that the chosen way of making local computations can have a drastic influence on the performed global computation itself. To do so, we study how distinct update schedules may fundamentally change the asymptotic behaviors of finite dynamical systems, by analyzing in particular their limit cycle maximal period. For the message itself to be general and impacting enough, we choose to focus on a ``simple'' computational model which prevents underlying systems from having too many intrinsic degrees of freedom, namely elementary cellular automata. More precisely, for elementary cellular automata rules which are neither too simple nor too complex (the problem should be meaningless for both), we show that update schedule changes can lead to significant computational complexity jumps (from constant to superpolynomial ones) in terms of their temporal asymptotes.

This paper, we explore the dynamics of threshold networks on undirected signed graphs. Much attention has been dedicated to understanding the convergence and long-term behavior of this model. Yet, an open question persists: How does the underlying graph structure impact network dynamics? Similar studies have been carried out for threshold networks and other types of Boolean networks, but the latter primarily focus on unsigned networks. Here, we address this question in the context of signed threshold networks. We introduce the stability index of a signed graph, related to the concepts of antibalance in signed graphs. Our index establishes a connection between the structure and the dynamics of signed threshold networks. We show that signed graphs having a negative stability index on every induced subgraph exhibit stable dynamics, i.e., the dynamics converge to fixed points regardless of their threshold parameters. Conversely, if at least one induced subgraph has a non-negative stability index, oscillations in long-term behavior may appear. Furthermore, we generalize the analysis to network dynamics under periodic update schemes.

Cells in a fungal hyphae are separated by internal walls (septa). The septa have tiny pores that allow cytoplasm flowing between cells. Cells can close their septa blocking the flow if they are injured, preventing fluid loss from the rest of filament. This action is achieved by special organelles called Woronin bodies. Using the controllable pores as an inspiration we advance one and two-dimensional cellular automata into Elementary fungal cellular automata (EFCA) and Majority fungal automata (MFA) by adding a concept of Woronin bodies to the cell state transition rules. EFCA is a cellular automaton where the communications between neighboring cells can be blocked by the activation of the Woronin bodies (Wb), allowing or blocking the flow of information (represented by a cytoplasm and chemical elements it carries) between them. We explore a novel version of the fungal automata where the evolution of the system is only affected by the activation of the Wb. We explore two case studies: the Elementary Fungal Cellular Automata (EFCA), which is a direct application of this variant for elementary cellular automata rules, and the Majority Fungal Automata (MFA), which correspond to an application of the Wb to two dimensional automaton with majority rule with Von Neumann neighborhood. By studying the EFCA model, we analyze how the 256 elementary cellular automata rules are affected by the activation of Wb in different modes, increasing the complexity on applied rule in some cases. In this paper we study the dynamical behavior of Boolean networks with firing memory, namely Boolean networks whose vertices are updated synchronously depending on their proper Boolean local transition functions so that each vertex remains at its firing state a finite number of steps. We prove in particular that these networks have the same computational power than the classical ones, ie any Boolean network with firing memory composed of $m$ vertices can be simulated by a Boolean network by adding vertices. We also prove general results on specific classes of networks. For instance, we show that the existence of at least one delay greater than 1 in disjunctive networks makes such networks have only fixed points as attractors. Moreover, for arbitrary networks composed of two vertices, we characterize the delay phase space, \ie the delay values such that networks admits limit cycles or fixed points. Finally, we analyze two classical biological models by introducing delays: the model of the immune control of the $\lambda$-phage and that of the genetic control of the floral morphogenesis of the plant \emph{Arabidopsis thaliana}.

We study the dynamic and complexity of the generalized Q2R automaton. We show the existence of non-polynomial cycles as well as its capability to simulate with the synchronous update the classical version of the automaton updated under a block sequential update scheme. Furthermore, we show that the decision problem consisting in determine if a given node in the network changes its state is \textbf{P}-Hard.

We consider the problem of studying the simulation capabilities of the dynamics of arbitrary networks of finite states machines. In these models, each node of the network takes two states 0 (passive) and 1 (active). The states of the nodes are updated in parallel following a local totalistic rule, i.e., depending only on the sum of active states. Four families of totalistic rules are considered: linear or matrix defined rules (a node takes state 1 if each of its neighbours is in state 1), threshold rules (a node takes state 1 if the sum of its neighbours exceed a threshold), isolated rules (a node takes state 1 if the sum of its neighbours equals to some single number) and interval rule (a node takes state 1 if the sum of its neighbours belong to some discrete interval). We focus in studying the simulation capabilities of the dynamics of each of the latter classes. In particular, we show that totalistic automata networks governed by matrix defined rules can only implement constant functions and other matrix defined functions. In addition, we show that t by threshold rules can generate any monotone Boolean functions. Finally, we show that networks driven by isolated and the interval rules exhibit a very rich spectrum of boolean functions as they can, in fact, implement any arbitrary Boolean functions. We complement this results by studying experimentally the set of different Boolean functions generated by totalistic rules on random graphs.

We investigate the dynamics of a conservative version of Conway's Game of Life, in which a pair consisting of a dead and a living cell can switch their states following Conway's rules but only by swapping their positions, irrespective of their mutual distance. Our study is based on square-lattice simulations as well as a mean-field calculation. As the density of dead cells is increased, we identify a discontinuous phase transition between an inactive phase, in which the dynamics freezes after a finite time, and an active phase, in which the dynamics persists indefinitely in the thermodynamic limit. Further increasing the density of dead cells leads the system back to an inactive phase via a second transition, which is continuous on the square lattice but discontinuous in the mean-field limit., Comment: To appear in Physical Review E

The NC versus P-hard classification of the prediction problem for sandpiles on the two dimensional grid with von Neumann neighborhood is a famous open problem. In this paper we make two kinds of progresses, by studying its freezing variant. First, it enables to establish strong connections with other well known prediction problems on networks of threshold Boolean functions such as majority. Second, we can highlight some necessary and sufficient elements to the dynamical complexity of sandpiles, with a surprisingly crucial role of cells with two grains.

Real-world examples of periods of periodical organisms range from cicadas whose life-cycles are larger prime numbers, like 13 or 17, to bamboos whose periods are large multiples of small primes, like 40 or even 120. The periodicity is caused by interaction of species, be it a predator-prey relationship, symbiosis, commensialism, or competition exclusion principle. We propose a simple mathematical model which explains and models all those principles, including listed extremel cases. This, rather universal, qualitative model is based on the concept of a local fitness function, where a randomly chosen new period is selected if the value of the global fitness function of the species increases. Arithmetically speaking, the different observed interactions are related to only four principles: given a couple of integer periods either (1) their greatest common divisor is one, (2) one of the periods is prime, (3) both periods are equal, or (4) one period is an integer multiple of the other., Comment: 22 pages, 9 figures

An automata network is a network of entities, each holding a state from a finite set and evolving according to a local update rule which depends only on its neighbors in the network's graph. It is freezing if there is an order on states such that the state evolution of any node is non-decreasing in any orbit. They are commonly used to model epidemic propagation, diffusion phenomena like bootstrap percolation or cristal growth. In this paper we establish how treewidth and maximum degree of the underlying graph are key parameters which influence the overall computational complexity of finite freezing automata networks. First, we define a general model checking formalism that captures many classical decision problems: prediction, nilpotency, predecessor, asynchronous reachability. Then, on one hand, we present an efficient parallel algorithm that solves the general model checking problem in NC for any graph with bounded degree and bounded treewidth. On the other hand, we show that these problems are hard in their respective classes when restricted to families of graph with polynomially growing treewidth. For prediction, predecessor and asynchronous reachability, we establish the hardness result with a fixed set-defiend update rule that is universally hard on any input graph of such families.

Hyphae within the mycelia of the ascomycetous fungi are compartmentalised by septa. Each septum has a pore that allows for inter-compartmental and inter-hyphal streaming of cytosol and even organelles. The compartments, however, have special organelles, Woronin bodies, that can plug the pores. When the pores are blocked, no flow of cytoplasm takes place. Inspired by the controllable compartmentalisation within the mycelium of the ascomycetous fungi we designed two-dimensional fungal automata. A fungal automaton is a cellular automaton where communication between neighbouring cells can be blocked on demand. We demonstrate computational universality of the fungal automata by implementing sandpile cellular automata circuits there. We reduce the Monotone Circuit Value Problem to the Fungal Automaton Prediction Problem. We construct families of wires, cross-overs and gates to prove that the fungal automata are P-complete.

We study a cellular automaton (CA) model of information dynamics on a single hypha of a fungal mycelium. Such a filament is divided in compartments (here also called cells) by septa. These septa are invaginations of the cell wall and their pores allow for flow of cytoplasm between compartments and hyphae. The septal pores of the fungal phylum of the Ascomycota can be closed by organelles called Woronin bodies. Septal closure is increased when the septa become older and when exposed to stress conditions. Thus, Woronin bodies act as informational flow valves. The one dimensional fungal automata is a binary state ternary neighbourhood CA, where every compartment follows one of the elementary cellular automata (ECA) rules if its pores are open and either remains in state `0' (first species of fungal automata) or its previous state (second species of fungal automata) if its pores are closed. The Woronin bodies closing the pores are also governed by ECA rules. We analyse a structure of the composition space of cell-state transition and pore-state transitions rules, complexity of fungal automata with just few Woronin bodies, and exemplify several important local events in the automaton dynamics.

In this paper we study the family of two-state Totalistic Freezing Cellular Automata (TFCA) defined over the triangular and square grids with von Neumann neighborhoods. We say that a Cellular Automaton is Freezing and Totalistic if the active cells remain unchanged, and the new value of an inactive cell depends only on the sum of its active neighbors. We classify all the Cellular Automata in the class of TFCA, grouping them in five different classes: the Trivial rules, Turing Universal rules,Algebraic rules, Topological rules and Fractal Growing rules. At the same time, we study in this family the Stability problem, consisting in deciding whether an inactive cell becomes active, given an initial configuration.We exploit the properties of the automata in each group to show that: - For Algebraic and Topological Rules the Stability problem is in $\text{NC}$. - For Turing Universal rules the Stability problem is $\text{P}$-Complete.

Recent empirical findings suggest that societies have become more polarized in various countries. That is, the median voter of today represents a smaller fraction of society compared to two decades ago and yet, the mechanisms underlying this phenomenon are not fully understood. Since interactions between influential actors ("activists") and voters play a major role in opinion formation, e.g. through social media, we develop a macroscopic opinion model in which competing activists spread their political ideas in specific groups of society. These ideas spread further to other groups in declining strength. While unilateral spreading shifts the opinion distribution, competition of activists leads to additional phenomena: Small heterogeneities among competing activists cause them to target different groups in society, which amplifies polarization. For moderate heterogeneities, we obtain target cycles and further amplification of polarization. In such cycles, the stronger activist differentiates himself from the weaker one, while the latter aims to imitate the stronger activist., Comment: 21 pages, 11 figures

In this paper we study the family of freezing cellular automata (FCA) in the context of asynchronous updating schemes. A cellular automaton is called freezing if there exists an order of its states, and the transitions are only allowed to go from a lower to a higher state. A cellular automaton is asynchronous if at each time-step only one cell is updated. Given configuration, we say that a cell is unstable if there exists a sequential updating scheme that changes its state. In this context, we define the problem AsyncUnstability, which consists in deciding if a cell is unstable or not. In general AsyncUnstability is in NP, and we study in which cases we can solve the problem by a more efficient algorithm. We begin showing that AsyncUnstability is in NL for any one-dimensional FCA. Then we focus on the family of life-like freezing CA (LFCA), which is a family of two-dimensional two-state FCA that generalize the freezing version of the game of life, known as life without death. We study the complexity of AsyncUnstability for all LFCA in the triangular and square grids, showing that almost all of them can be solved in NC, except for one rule for which the problem is NP-complete.

Diffusion-Limited Aggregation (DLA) is a cluster-growth model that consists in a set of particles that are sequentially aggregated over a two-dimensional grid. In this paper, we introduce a biased version of the DLA model, in which particles are limited to move in a subset of possible directions. We denote by $k$-DLA the model where the particles move only in $k$ possible directions. We study the biased DLA model from the perspective of Computational Complexity, defining two decision problems The first problem is Prediction, whose input is a site of the grid $c$ and a sequence $S$ of walks, representing the trajectories of a set of particles. The question is whether a particle stops at site $c$ when sequence $S$ is realized. The second problem is Realization, where the input is a set of positions of the grid, $P$. The question is whether there exists a sequence $S$ that realizes $P$, i.e. all particles of $S$ exactly occupy the positions in $P$. Our aim is to classify the Prediciton and Realization problems for the different versions of DLA. We first show that Prediction is P-Complete for 2-DLA (thus for 3-DLA). Later, we show that Prediction can be solved much more efficiently for 1-DLA. In fact, we show that in that case the problem is NL-Complete. With respect to Realization, we show that restricted to 2-DLA the problem is in P, while in the 1-DLA case, the problem is in L.

Boolean networks are one of the most studied discrete models in the context of the study of gene expression. In order to define the dynamics associated to a Boolean network, there are several \emph{update schemes} that range from parallel or \emph{synchronous} to \emph{asynchronous.} However, studying each possible dynamics defined by different update schemes might not be efficient. In this context, considering some type of temporal delay in the dynamics of Boolean networks emerges as an alternative approach. In this paper, we focus in studying the effect of a particular type of delay called \emph{firing memory} in the dynamics of Boolean networks. Particularly, we focus in symmetric (non-directed) conjunctive networks and we show that there exist examples that exhibit attractors of non-polynomial period. In addition, we study the prediction problem consisting in determinate if some vertex will eventually change its state, given an initial condition. We prove that this problem is {\bf PSPACE}-complete.

The Naming Game has been studied to explore the role of self-organization in the development and negotiation of linguistic conventions. In this paper, we define an automata networks approach to the Naming Game. Two problems are faced: (1) the definition of an automata networks for multi-party communicative interactions; and (2) the proof of convergence for three different orders in which the individuals are updated (updating schemes). This work attempts to give new theoretical insights to the absence of intermediate stages in the evolution of language. In particular, it is developed an automata networks approach to a crucial question: how a population of language users can reach agreement on a linguistic convention? To describe the appearance of sharp transitions in the self-organization of language, it is adopted an extremely simple model of (working) memory. At each time step, language users simply loss part of their word-memories. Through computer simulations of low-dimensional lattices, it appear sharp transitions at critical values that depend on the size of the vicinities of the individuals., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Can artificial communities of agents develop language with scaling relations close to the Zipf law? As a preliminary answer to this question, we propose an Automata Networks model of the formation of a vocabulary on a population of individuals, under two in principle opposite strategies: the alignment and the least effort principle. Within the previous account to the emergence of linguistic conventions (specially, the Naming Game), we focus on modeling speaker and hearer efforts as actions over their vocabularies and we study the impact of these actions on the formation of a shared language. The numerical simulations are essentially based on an energy function, that measures the amount of local agreement between the vocabularies. The results suggests that on one dimensional lattices the best strategy to the formation of shared languages is the one that minimizes the efforts of speakers on communicative tasks., Comment: This paper has been withdrawn due one author has declined its participation

We study cellular automata with respect to a new communication complexity problem: each of two players know half of some finite word, and must be able to tell whether the state of the central cell will follow a given evolution, by communicating as little as possible between each other. We present some links with classical dynamical concepts, especially equicontinuity, expansiveness, entropy and give the asymptotic communication complexity of most elementary cellular automata., Comment: submitted to TCS

The goal of this paper is to show why the framework of communication complexity seems suitable for the study of cellular automata. Researchers have tackled different algorithmic problems ranging from the complexity of predicting to the decidability of different dynamical properties of cellular automata. But the difference here is that we look for communication protocols arising in the dynamics itself. Our work is guided by the following idea: if we are able to give a protocol describing a cellular automaton, then we can understand its behavior.

Number-conserving (or {\em conservative}) cellular automata have been used in several contexts, in particular traffic models, where it is natural to think about them as systems of interacting particles. In this article we consider several issues concerning one-dimensional cellular automata which are conservative, monotone (specially ``non-increasing''), or that allow a weaker kind of conservative dynamics. We introduce a formalism of ``particle automata'', and discuss several properties that they may exhibit, some of which, like anticipation and momentum preservation, happen to be intrinsic to the conservative CA they represent. For monotone CA we give a characterization, and then show that they too are equivalent to the corresponding class of particle automata. Finally, we show how to determine, for a given CA and a given integer $b$, whether its states admit a $b$-neighborhood-dependent relabelling whose sum is conserved by the CA iteration; this can be used to uncover conservative principles and particle-like behavior underlying the dynamics of some CA. The virtual ant introduced by C. Langton has an interesting behavior, which has been studied in several contexts. Here we give a construction to calculate any boolean circuit with the trajectory of a single ant. This proves the P-hardness of the system and implies, through the simulation of one dimensional cellular automata and Turing machines, the universality of the ant and the undecidability of some problems associated to it., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures.
