2. Length and decomposition of the cohomology of the complement to a hyperplane arrangement

Abstract

Let $\mathcal A$ be a hyperplane arrangement in $\mathbb C^n$. We show that the number of decomposition factors as a perverse sheaf of the direct image $Rj_*\mathbb C_U $ of the constant sheaf on the complement $U$ to the arrangement is given by the Poincar\'e polynomial of the arrangement. Furthermore we describe the composition factors of $Rj_*\mathbb C_U $ as certain local cohomology sheaves and give their multiplicity., Comment: Final corrected version, with more references added, to appear in Proc. Abstract

On the complement $X= {\mathbb C}^2 - \bigcup_{i=1}^n L_i$ to a central plane line arrangement $\bigcup_{i=1}^n L_i \subset {\mathbb C}^2$, a locally constant sheaf of complex vector spaces $\mathcal L_a$ is associated to any multi-index $a \in {\mathbb C}^n$. Using the description of MacPherson and Vilonen of the category of perverse sheaves (\cite{MV2} and \cite {MV3}) we obtain a criterion for the irreducibility and number of decomposition factors of the direct image $Rj_* \mathcal L_a$ as a perverse sheaf, where $j: X \rightarrow {\mathbb C}^2$ is the canonical inclusion.

Abstract

Resumo: Os girinos são componentes importantes de muitas teias alimentares aquáticas, pois influenciam as populações em outros níveis tróficos e, consequentemente, a transferência de energia entre os ecossistemas aquáticos e terrestres. O que os girinos consomem é um fator chave para suas funções ecológicas. As assembleias de anuros neotropicais incluem muitas espécies com estágio larval, porém as dietas dos girinos neotropicais são relativamente pouco conhecidas. Realizamos uma revisão sistemática da literatura disponível sobre estudos in situ de dietas de girinos neotropicais e descobrimos que a maioria dos estudos são descritivos e temporalmente restritos, não considerando variações sazonais. Frequentemente, os estudos também não consideram possíveis variações ontogenéticas da dieta ou a capacidade dos girinos de selecionar alimentos com base no que está disponível em seus habitats. Contribuímos para este tópico investigando variações sazonais e comparando as dietas de dois estágios de desenvolvimento dos girinos de Scinax curicica. A dieta dos girinos variou entre as estações seca e chuvosa, mas não entre as etapas de desenvolvimento estudadas. Estes resultados, juntamente com estudos publicados, sugerem que múltiplos fatores ecológicos/fisiológicos podem influenciar a alimentação do girino e não devem ser desconsiderados. Estudos sobre a ecologia da alimentação do girino neotropical, capacidade de digestão, efeitos fisiológicos de diferentes dietas e interações entre microbioma e dieta são altamente desejáveis, mas em grande parte inexplorados. Tais estudos poderão acrescentar informações valiosas para compreender o papel dos girinos nas teias alimentares aquáticas, seu crescimento e eficiência no desenvolvimento resultantes da obtenção e assimilação de alimentos e, consequentemente, seus efeitos sobre outras espécies nos ecossistemas aquáticos e terrestres. Abstract

Tadpoles are important components of many aquatic food webs as they influence populations at other trophic levels and, ultimately, energy transfer between aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. What tadpoles consume is a key factor to their ecological functions. Neotropical anuran assemblages include many species with a larval stage, however, the diets of neotropical tadpoles are relatively poorly known. We performed a systematic review on the available literature on in situ studies of neotropical tadpole diets and found out that most studies are descriptive and temporally restricted, failing to consider seasonal variations. Studies frequently also fail to consider possible ontogenetic dietary variations or tadpoles' capacity to select food based on what is available to them in their habitats. We contributed to this topic by investigating seasonal variations and comparing the diets of two developmental stages of Scinax curicica tadpoles. Tadpole diet varied between dry and rainy seasons, but not between the studied developmental stages. These results, together with published studies, suggest that multiple ecological/physiological factors are likely to influence tadpole food intake and should not be overlooked. Studies on neotropical tadpole feeding ecology, digestion capacity, physiological effects of different diets and microbiome versus diet interactions are highly desirable but largely unexplored. Such studies are likely to add valuable information to understand tadpole roles in aquatic food webs, their growth and development performance resulting from food acquisition and assimilation, and consequently their effects on other species in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Abstract

This PhD thesis consists in three papers in which we describe irreducibility conditions and the number of factors in a composition series of certain perverse sheaves. We study some particular cases, providing examples and showing how to explicitly use perverse sheaves to obtain precise results. The aim is to add to the class of concrete applications of perverse sheaves and exploit their role in the cohomology of hyperplane arrangements. In the three papers the perverse sheaves considered are given by the derived direct image of locally constant sheaves defined in the complement U of a hyperplane arrangement. In Paper I, we start with a locally constant rank 1 sheaf on U and use a category equivalence, developed by MacPherson and Vilonen, to obtain a criterion for the irreducibility in terms of a multi-index that determines the locally constant sheaf. We then determine the number of decomposition factors when the irreducibility conditions are not satisfied. In Paper II we consider the constant sheaf on U, show that the number of decomposition factors of the direct image is given by the Poincaré polynomial of the hyperplane arrangement, and furthermore describe them as certain local cohomology sheaves and give their multiplicity. In Paper III, we use the Riemann-Hilbert correspondence and D-module calculations to determine a condition describing when the direct image of a locally constant sheaf contains a decomposition factor as a perverse sheaf that has support on a certain flat of the hyperplane arrangement., At the time of the doctoral defense, the following papers were unpublished and had a status as follows: Paper 2: Manuscript. Abstract

The emergence of infections associated to new antimicrobial resistance in Acinetobacter baumannii (Ab) genotypes represents a major challenge. In this context, this study aimed to determine the diversity of resistance mechanisms and investigate clonal dissemination and predominant sequence types (STs) in multidrug-resistant Ab strains of clinical (tracheal aspirate, n = 17) and environmental (surface, n = 6) origins. Additionally, the major clones found in clinical (A) and environmental (H) strains had their complete genomes sequenced. All strains were submitted to polymerase chain reactions (PCR) for the detection of the ISAba1/blaOXA-51-like and ISAba1/blaOXA-23-like genes, while the expression of genes encoding the carO porin, AdeABC (adeB), AdeFGH (adeG), and AdeIJK (adeJ) efflux pumps was determined by real time PCR (qPCR). Most of the strains were characterized as extensively drug-resistant (XDR) with high minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) detected for tigecycline and carbapenems. Associations between ISAba1/OXA-51 and ISAba1/OXA-23 were observed in 91.3% and 52.2% of the strains, respectively. Only the adeB gene was considered hyper-expressed. Furthermore, most of the strains analyzed by the MuLtilocus Sequence-Typing (MLST) were found to belong to the clonal complex 113 (CC113). In addition, a new ST, ST1399, belonging to CC229, was also discovered herein. Strains analyzed by whole genome sequencing presented resistance genes linked to multidrug-resistance phenotypes and confirmed the presence of Tn2008, which provides high levels carbapenem-resistance. Abstract

OBJETIVO: Apresentar um caso de ascaridíase hepatobiliar complicado por pneumonia lipoídica e discutir as implicações anestésicas envolvidas. DESCRIÇÃO DO CASO: Menina de dois anos de idade com ascaridíase hepatobiliar complicada por pneumonia lipoídica por aspiração e desnutrição grave, advinda de família em condições sociais precárias em zona rural, com quatro irmãos. Foi tratada com sucesso por uma combinação de lavados broncopulmonares sucessivos e cirurgia. COMENTÁRIOS: Ascaridíase biliar corresponde a cerca de 10% dos casos de complicações de ascaridíase. Apenas uma minoria precisa de tratamento cirúrgico. O uso de óleo mineral por via oral é um tratamento tradicional para a suboclusão intestinal pelo Ascaris lumbricoides, mas a broncoaspiração do óleo e a conseqüente pneumonia lipoídica representam um risco alto para o seu uso. Anestesia geral para laparotomia exploradora em pré-escolar desnutrido com pneumonia lipóide e ascaridíase biliar é uma situação pouco contemplada na literatura médica, o que exigiu um planejamento terapêutico específico. OBJECTIVE: To present a case of hepatobiliary ascariasis complicated by exogenous lipoid aspirative pneumonia and the anesthetic implications involved. CASE DESCRIPTION: We present a case of hepatobiliary ascariasis complicated by exogenous lipoid aspirative pneumonia and severe undernourishment in a two-year-old female from a five-children poor family from the Brazilian rural area. She was successfully treated by the association of repeated bronchopulmonary lavage and surgery. COMMENTS: Biliary ascariasis corresponds roughly to 10% of complicated ascariasis cases. Only a minority requires surgery. Mineral oil is a traditional treatment for intestinal Ascaris lumbricoides subocclusion, but oil aspiration and lipoid pneumonia remain a highly morbid risk of this practice. General anesthesia and laparotomy in an undernourished small child with lipoid pneumonia and biliary ascariasis were rarely addressed in the medical literature. Abstract

We described a comprehensive analysis of the molecular epidemiology of multidrug-resistant (MDR) P. aeruginosa. Molecular analysis included typing by Pulsed Field Gel Electrophoresis, identification of genes of interest through PCR-based assays and sequencing of target genes. Case-control study was conducted to better understand the prognostic of patients and the impact of inappropriate therapy in patients with bacteremia, as well as the risk factors of MDR infections. We observed a high rate of MDR isolates (40.7%), and 51.0% of them was independently associated with inappropriate antibiotic therapy. Bacteremia was detected in 66.9% of patients, and prolonged hospital stay was expressive in those resistant to fluoroquinolone. Plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance genes (PMQR), qnrS1 and aac(6’)Ib-cr, were detected in two different nosocomial isolates (5.3%), and the aac(6’)-Ib7 variant was detected at a high frequency (87.5%) in those negative to PMQR. The presence of mutations in gyrA and parC genes was observed in 100% and 85% of selected isolates, respectively. Isolates harboring PMQR genes or mutations in gyrA and parC were not closely related, except in those containing SPM (São Paulo metallo-β-lactamase) clone. In addition, there is no study published in Brazil to date reporting the presence of Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates harboring both qnrS1 and aac(6’)Ib-cr genes, with alarming frequency of patients with inappropriate therapy.
