- Abstract
This paper describes the results of a three-way evaluation of traditional, televised, and individually-paced instruction in beginning graphics courses. The purpose of the study was to determine mean gain scores for students in each of the three groups. In order to disguise the experiment, no attempt was made to randomly assign subjects to groups, nor were subjects told they were participating in an experiment. Two forms of a standardized test were used in a pretest-posttest format. The mean, standard deviation, scatter diagram, and regression line were calculated for each instructional group and appear in attached appendices. Histograms are used to show pretest and posttest scores for subjects in each of the groups and scatter diagrams are constructed in which lines of regression are drawn. With the use of the stardard errors of measurement for each of the instructional groups, it was found that significant achievement resulted for 73 percent of the traditional group, 78 percent of the televised group, and 59 percent of those subjected to individual instruction. Some possible explanations for these phenomena are provided. (Author/CP)

Flow-field interactions are studied in a high-through-flow, axial-flow transonic compressor using Digital Particle Image Velocimetry (DPIV). Measurement of instantaneous velocities in two-dimensional (2D) planes in the main flow direction allows characterization of the unsteadiness of spatial structures from an upstream blade row and their interaction with the downstream rotor. The measurement system is specially designed for a large transonic environment, which introduces conditions that differ from those generally encountered by traditional DPIV systems. Viewing windows on the compressor housing are used to allow optical access, and the design of a special optical probe permits laser-sheet delivery through one of the wake generators (WG). The system is synchronized with the blade passage and is remotely monitored and controlled. Through flow visualization and instantaneous and ensemble-averaged quantities, it clearly captures the interactions of the wake with the potential field of the rotor leading edge (LE) and its bow shock, vortex shedding, vortex-blade synchronization, wake chopping, and boundary-layer flow at the housing for several configurations. We report on a search for the trilepton decay signature from the associated production of supersymmetric gaugino pairs, {tilde {chi}}{sup {plus_minus}}{sub 1}{tilde {chi}}{sub 2}{sup 0}, within the context of minimal supersymmetric models that conserve R parity. This search uses 95 pb{sup {minus}1} of p{bar p} data taken at {radical}(s)=1.8 TeV with the D0 detector. No evidence of a trilepton signature has been found, and a limit on the product of cross section times branching fraction to trileptons is given as a function of {tilde {chi}}{sup {plus_minus}}{sub 1} mass. {copyright} {ital 1998} {ital The American Physical Society}

We present the first measurement of the electron angular distribution parameter alpha_2 in W to e nu events produced in proton-antiproton collisions as a function of the W boson transverse momentum. Our analysis is based on data collected using the D0 detector during the 1994--1995 Fermilab Tevatron run. We compare our results with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD, which predicts an angular distribution of (1 +/- alpha_1 cos theta* + alpha_2 cos^2 theta*), where theta* is the polar angle of the electron in the Collins-Soper frame. In the presence of QCD corrections, the parameters alpha_1 and alpha_2 become functions of p_T^W, the W boson transverse momentum. This measurement provides a test of next-to-leading order QCD corrections which are a non-negligible contribution to the W boson mass measurement.

Results are presented from analyses of jet data produced in pbarp collisions at sqrt{s} = 630 and 1800 GeV collected with the DO detector during the 1994-95 Fermilab Tevatron Collider run. We discuss details of detector calibration, and jet selection criteria in measurements of various jet production cross sections at sqrt{s} = 630 and 1800 GeV. The inclusive jet cross sections, the dijet mass spectrum, the dijet angular distributions, and the ratio of inclusive jet cross sections at sqrt{s} = 630 and 1800 GeV are compared to next-to-leading-order QCD predictions. The order alpha_s^3 calculations are in good agreement with the data. We also use the data at sqrt{s} = 1800 GeV to rule out models of quark compositeness with a contact interaction scale less than 2.2 TeV at the 95% confidence level., 158 pages, 105 figures, submitted to Phys. We report a new measurement of the pseudorapidity (eta) and transverse-energy (Et) dependence of the inclusive jet production cross section in pbar b collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV using 95 pb**-1 of data collected with the DZero detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. The differential cross section d^2sigma/dEt deta is presented up to |eta| = 3, significantly extending previous measurements. The results are in good overall agreement with next-to-leading order predictions from QCD and indicate a preference for certain parton distribution functions.

Bottom-quark production in p̄p collisions at √s = 1.8 TeV is studied with 5 pb-1 of data collected in 1995 by the DO detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The differential production cross section for b jets in the central rapidity region (|yb| < 1) as a function of jet transverse energy is extracted from a muon-tagged jet sample. Within experimental and theoretical uncertainties, DO results are found to be higher than, but compatible with, next-to-leading-order QCD predictions.

Events in p̄p collisions at √s= 1.8 TeV with total transverse energy exceeding 500 GeV are used to set limits on quark substructure. The data are consistent with next-to-leading order QCD calculations. We set a lower limit of 2.0 TeV at 95% confidence on the energy scale ΛLL for compositeness in quarks, assuming a model with a left-left isoscalar contact interaction term. The limits on ΛLL are found to be insensitive to the sign of the interference term in the Lagrangian. ©2000 The American Physical Society.
