Objective Methods Results Conclusion We examine the political identity and its determinants of China's young generation who are increasingly emerging from new industries and platforms.Using survey data collected in China in 2020 from a representative sample, we employ Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) and quantile regression models to analyze the effects of multiple factors on the political identity of emerging youth. Additionally, we employ the Shapley value decomposition method to compare the explanatory contributions of different factors. The instrumental variable method (2SLS) is also used to address the possible endogeneity between public participation and political identity.We find that the overall political identity of emerging youth scores high, and “authority resilience” rather than “identity decline” is a more suitable term to describe the political identity of this group. Educational enlightenment does not dissolve political identity; the higher the economic benefits and the stronger the sense of external political efficacy, the greater the political identity of China's emerging youth. Young people who are willing to participate in public affairs but lack access to the channels to do so have a lower degree of political identity.Governance performance theory and institutional environment theory have more explanatory power than culturalism for understanding the political identity of emerging youth. This research aims to examine environmental performance disclosure, social performance disclosure, governance performance disclosure, and political linkages in increasing firm value in Singapore. The research method uses a quantitative descriptive approach using secondary data. The population is all companies listed on the Singapore Stock Exchange with a sample size of 87 companies and the research period is between 2018 and 2021. The hypothesis testing analysis technique uses panel data regression. The findings of this study indicate that disclosure of political ties, disclosure of governance performance, and disclosure of environmental performance all increase firm value. However, firm value is not influenced by social performance disclosure. This research looks at how political connections and firm value are influenced by disclosure of environmental performance, social performance, governance performance and other factors. To increase business value, it is important to disclose environmental performance, social performance, governance performance and political relationships, as this research shows. The implications of this research show that sustainability report disclosure provides a good signal that can increase firm value.

Responding to the calls in both earnings management and sustainability literature to examine corporate governance patterns, this study fills the sustainability literature gap by shedding light on the moderating role of corporate governance on earnings management and environmental, social and governance performance. Using a sample of UK firms listed on the London Stock Exchange for the period 2016–2020, we find considerable evidence that earnings management reduces environmental, social and governance performance. Importantly, we find that board gender diversity among other corporate governance mechanisms is stronger and more effective in attenuating the negative effects of earnings management on environmental, social and governance performance significantly. We find support for the agency theory that corporate governance mechanisms reduce the managerial exploitation of resources required for sustainable investments and sustainability performance. In the realm of sustainable development, Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) performance has become a crucial metric for evaluating the long-term viability and ethical conduct of businesses. However, there remains a gap in understanding how these factors operate within the context of developing nations such as Bangladesh. Given the unique socio-economic and environmental challenges faced by such countries, it is imperative to explore the relationship between green tax, energy efficiency, and ESG performance within their manufacturing sectors. Thus, this study investigates direct and mediated effects of green tax and energy efficiency on ESG performance. The study uses 457 responses from manufacturing companies and employs PLS-SEM and ANN model to analyze the data. The results reveal a positive association between green tax policies and ESG performance, indicating that such fiscal measures can contribute to sustainable business practices. Furthermore, energy efficiency initiatives exhibit a positive impact on all dimensions of ESG performance, highlighting their role in fostering environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and effective governance within manufacturing operations. Notably, green tax serves as a mediator between energy efficiency measures and ESG outcomes, emphasizing its intermediary role in driving sustainable practices. This research offers practical insights for policymakers, business leaders, and sustainability practitioners integrating energy efficiency initiatives into green tax policies to enhance ESG performance.

This article examines the influence of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance disclosure on stock performance in companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (BEI) from 2018 to 2022. The study finds that environmental performance has a positive and significant influence on stock performance, while social and governance performance do not have a significant influence. However, when all three aspects are considered together, they have a positive influence on overall stock performance. The research suggests that companies can improve their stock performance by paying attention to environmental performance. These findings provide insight for practitioners, regulators, and investors in the Indonesian capital market. Another study mentioned in the article found that social factors positively influenced company value, while social controversy had a positive impact on company value. Good corporate governance was also found to increase a company's success in achieving its goals. However, the research showed that governance performance had a negative or insignificant effect on stock performance. Historically, governing, and thus planning, the Murray-Darling Basin (MDB) has been framed in a plethora of ways. Seemingly, 'the plan' and planning has to be all things to all people, but the reforms, instituted in the Water Act 2007 (Cwlth), have resulted in greater complexity, uncertainty and controversy. Effective governing of the Basin along an unfolding, viable trajectory within an Anthropocene-world seems more elusive than ever. In this context, we propose a research and praxis agenda for dramaturgy as an initiative that seeks 'effective' water governance in the MDB. A dramaturge is someone,group, body or process who writes/adapts a play, brings forth a particular type of performance set in an ever-changing audience/context. Dramaturges engage in praxis. Two exemplar dramaturgies , developed through ex poste and ex ante analyses, are outlined. Each can be refined or consolidated in an on-going deliberative inquiry-process that generates social learning and effects concerted action for future MDB governance. Our research inquiry is exploratory but is based on a choice to frame governance from a cyber-systemic perspective, a praxis continually enacted through the interactions of actors, their symbols and frames and feedback dynamics between the social and biophysical world. In recent years, China’s central government has focused strategically on motivating local governments to allocate more administrative resources to enhance performance in non-economic areas, such as environmental and cultural services. As a governance practice, the central government has initiated “evaluation and commendation” campaigns among local governments. The main governance objective of these local government campaigns is to solicit public engagement, including public participation, support, and actions. Based on a case study of the campaign to establish a National Civilised City, this paper presents the local government’s governance logic, operating mechanism, and governance performance in soliciting public engagement in “evaluation and commendation” activities. We find that in “evaluation and commendation” campaigns, characterised by short-term authority commendation incentives and shortage of governance resources, the local governments adopted the unusual governance mechanism of “administrative authority-driven public engagement”, using both flexible and mandatory strategies. The flexibility strategy leads to the active participation of citizens, but the mandatory strategy makes public engagement stay at the superficial level, characterised by surface-level cooperation and inner rejection, causing partial exclusion and separation between the government and the public, in turn exhibiting a “ratchet effect” in governance performance. In China, achieving sustainable development goals for PPP projects is an urgent issue. Project governance mechanisms are important to PPP project sustainability, but there are many risk factors in traditional project governance mechanisms. This research focuses on embedding risk governance mechanisms into the traditional project governance system with contract governance mechanisms and relationship governance mechanisms. The main purpose is to reveal the integration of PPP project governance mechanisms and its impact on governance performance and project sustainability, and to propose governance optimization strategies. First, by enriching the understanding of the governance mechanism, governance performance and project sustainability, and improving the measurement scale. Then, by constructing a structural equation model, collecting data through questionnaires, and exploring the effect of the project governance mechanism on project sustainability. (1) The results of direct effect testing show that contractual governance mechanisms, relational governance mechanisms and risk governance mechanisms are positively associated with governance performance, and governance performance is positively associated with project sustainability; (2) the results of mediating effect testing show that interaction of the three governance mechanisms has a positive effect on governance performance. This study examines the effects of gender and cultural diversity of boards on the corporate governance and social performance of 373 companies listed in 24 emerging country markets over the period of 2010–2019 using panel data analysis. A two-step system GMM model is also applied to test the endogeneity problem. The results indicate that gender and cultural diversity positively affect corporate governance performance. While we note that social performance is positively associated with both gender and cultural diversity, this relationship is insignificant. The findings offer multidimensional insights for companies, policy makers, and stakeholders to promote the association between gender and cultural diversity initiatives and corporate sustainability dimensions in emerging markets. Quality education is a key determinant for ASEAN's aspiration to be a single market and production base and to attract foreign investment. However, the region is characterized by an education divide in terms of quality and output, and this is likely to increase in the post-COVID-19 period. A simulation, modelling a productivity increase in the education sector through an increase in the Human Development-Education Index for lagging ASEAN countries to the level of Singapore (benchmark country), shows that GDP, exports and consumption are poised to go up much more for the countries that lag farther behind Singapore in their education quality. This increases ASEAN countries' potential to achieve outcomes from regional integration and hence provides an incentive to pay more attention to education cooperation, particularly by setting regional targets for improved education quality and output at the national level while linking education more intrinsically to ASEAN economic cooperation. This study explores the relationship between a company's Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) performance, and corporate risk. Moreover, the study emphasizes how CEO power moderates this relationship. Using a sample of Chinese A-share listed enterprises from 2011 to 2018, it is found that better ESG performance can reduce firms' risk. The negative relationship between ESG performance and corporate is stronger for the company with greater CEO power. This link is weaker for state-owned firms and stronger for firms with lower institutional investor holdings. Furthermore, ESG performance mainly affects enterprise risk through three channels: firm reputation, information transparency, and internal control. Generally, firms with better ESG performance are more likely to have sound risk management frameworks. Corporations are now expected to self-regulate in order to uphold their social obligations to society. This is known as the social responsibility of corporations or corporate social responsibility. CSR helps a business to be mindful of the impacts it has on the economy, society, and environment. The most important CSR component for the automotive industry is unquestionably environmental responsibility. Despite the fact that many businesses still place a strong emphasis on economic responsibility, it is widely acknowledged that all three CSR elements are essential for the success of a firm. This study's objective is to look into the effects of corporate social responsibility (CSR) on business performance in the automobile sector, with an emphasis on Asian nations. Sample companies were selected from the Thomson Reuters database according to the data availability on corporate social performance and firm performance for more than 10 years. Data analysis was performed using the software STATA. Fixed and random effects panel regression models were used to analyse the relationships. The findings of this study are consistent with the idea that corporate social responsibility considerably improves the performance of automobile companies. The study concludes that companies need to focus more on CSR spending, as it improves the financial performance of the company. The study contributes to the existing literature as it validates the strong relationship between CSR components and firm performance in the automobile sector, which has not been much explored in the extant literature. The results of the panel data regression demonstrated that not only the environmental score is significant in determining the firm performance; other components such as social and governance scores are also equally important in achieving the desired firm performance, which is totally against the common notion that since automobile firms cause much damage to the environment, they need to focus only on environmental aspects through their CSR initiatives. This paper takes the air pollution governance performance as the research object, establishes the evaluation index system of air pollution governance performance using the pressure-state-response (PSR) model, and uses the data of 11 prefecture-level cities in Jiangxi Province from 2014–2017 to carry out empirical tests. The results show that, in terms of indicator weights, the state and pressure categories have higher weights than the response category, further highlighting the importance of reducing pollution emissions rather than post-pollution treatment. Regarding regional comparisons, only a few regions show a good balance between "stress-state-response", while most regions show a "loss of balance". In terms of annual changes, the performance of most regions in several categories rose and showed a wave-like upward trend, reflecting the intermittent improvement characteristics of air pollution governance performance in most regions of Jiangxi. Finally, combined with the evaluation results, this paper proposes policy suggestions, such as improving the performance evaluation index system of air pollution governance, promoting the comprehensive governance of air pollution, focusing on regions with weaker air pollution governance, and strengthening the regional collaborative governance of air pollution. Air pollution governance is of great benefit to future generations, and its steady performance improvement is inextricably linked to the fiscal relationships between the central and local governments in China's decentralization context. Based on the provincial panel data from 2011 to 2019, this paper constructs a comprehensive index of air pollution governance performance using the entropy method. Then, the relationship between fiscal decentralization and governance performance of air pollution is measured using a two-way fixed effects model. The results show that the increase in fiscal decentralization is not conducive to the improvement in governance performance of air pollution. Moreover, fiscal decentralization weakens the positive impact of pollution control investment on enhancing governance performance of air pollution while easing the negative impact of local government capital attraction competition on enhancing governance performance of air pollution. In terms of regional level, fiscal decentralization in northern and inland regions significantly negatively impacts air pollution governance performance. However, the above effects are not significant in the southern and coastal regions. The policy implications of the above findings are as follows: first, the central government ought to optimize the financial decentralization system and promote multiple performance assessments. Second, it is essential to adjust the structure of fiscal spending and promote competitive partnerships among local governments. Social governance is an important aspect of national governance. Strengthening and innovating social governance is an important task to promote social construction, and the necessary policy support is an important means to achieve governance innovation. Based on the policy texts of 31 urban districts (including 22 provincial capitals, 4 municipalities directly under the Central Government and 5 capitals of autonomous regions), the innovation policy of social governance is divided into five dimensions: organizational mobilization policy, public service policy, social regulatory policy, community constructive policy and data informative policy. Using the fs-QCA method, the path of social governance innovation policy on governance performance is discussed. Based on the date of the main pollutant discharge and the change of pollutant concentration in Z city, this study performed the statistical analysis of the concentration data in excel. The data covers 3 years from 1 January 2015 to 31 December 2017. An exposure-response relationship model was used established to evaluate the health hazards caused by air pollution and the corresponding economic losses, further analyzing the relationship between air pollution, health hazards, and economic benefits. The results of the study showed that the changes in SO2 and NO2 concentrations in Z City from 2015 to 2017 have a great influence on the mortality rate of the local population, respiratory mortality, the rate of internal medicine of outpatients, and the rate of chronic bronchitis disease. The economic losses between 2015 and 2017 caused by PM10, the primary pollutant in the air, were 3.9 billion, 3.5 billion, and 2.9 billion respectively, accounting for 3.60%, 2.88%, and 2.09% of Z City's GDP, which were enormous. Finally, countermeasures of feasible treatment and in government performance were put forward.

Governance behavior and the proper allocation of governance rights, responsibilities, and benefits are critical for the coordinated and sustainable evolution of the marine eco-economic system. This study comprehensively evaluates the process and result performance of China’s marine eco-economic system governance, based on panel data on 11 Chinese coastal provinces and cities from 2000 to 2016. Although the overall governance result has been improved by the marine economic and social subsystems, the marine ecological subsystem has declined and its development has stagnated the whole system. The process performance of the governance of China’s marine eco-economic system has declined significantly because of gradually increasing endogenous transaction costs, general transaction costs, and social investment. The government of China controls the governance of the marine eco-economic system in the country. Enterprises, NGOs, the public, and others have limited participation because of a lack of incentives. Therefore, it is necessary to establish a more transparent governance game mechanism and a more reasonable distribution system of rights, responsibilities and interests, so as to form a new multi-subjects collaborative governance mechanism.

This study aims to answer the following research question: how do collaborative networks affect the performance of individual policy actors embedded in the network? We examine this question with a unique dataset on water governance in Dongguan city, China. We hypothesize that collaborative network affects the environmental performance of policy actors through a social influence mechanism, and that the performance of an ego actor will emulate that of alters in the network. This paper investigates the effect of the economic policy uncertainty (EPU) on corporate environmental, social, and governance practices (ESG), using 6,562 firm‐year observations from 15 developed European countries covering the period from 2004 to 2017. The results show that during periods of high uncertainty, firms increase their overall ESG performance, corporate environmental performance, and performance in governance. The relationship is valid for emission, resource use, workforce, management, and corporate social responsibility (CSR) strategy subdimensions of ESG. Furthermore, during periods of high uncertainty, firms operating in concentrated industries increase their overall ESG activities and corporate environmental performance. These results suggest that firms use ESG practices as risk‐reducing activities like insurance, during high periods of uncertainty. Overall, consistent with the stakeholder theory, the results indicate that firms increase their ESG practices not only to reduce corporate risk‐taking but also to follow value‐increasing activities during periods of high uncertainty, implying an improved stakeholder engagement. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the influence of environmental, social and governance performance on the economic performance of the Standard & Poor’s 500 companies. Structural equation modeling and linear regression have been utilized to measure the overall and individual influence of environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance on economic performance using longitudinal data comprising the years from 2010 to 2015. The overall ESG model had a significant relationship on economic performance. Furthermore, the findings of this study show that social and governance performance significantly affects economic performance in all regression models. However, environmental performance failed to show a significant relationship. The research contributes to the literature by providing insights for investors, managers and employees about the influence of ESG performance on company performance.

COP26 highlighted near-term emissions reductions in addition to longer-term net-zero. At the same time, shifts in political landscapes around the world have furthered the salience of climate action led by non-state actors such as business interests, civil society and nonprofits, and local and regional communities. Despite the promise, performance of non-state climate action remains unclear and requires further empirical validation. The current study focuses on corporate entities and explores the potential effect of corporate leadership on climate governance (CG) performance. Our aim is to advance the literature on non-state CG by offering empirical evidence of the less-studied effectiveness of non-state CG leadership. Echoing previous research, our study identifies a contingent perspective on the effect of corporate leadership on CG performance. Specifically, through the context of utilities’ energy efficiency programming in the U.S. and a multilevel research design, we find suggestive evidence that when the moderating effect of citizens’ support is considered, corporate leadership could potentially positively affect CG performance. Additionally, we demonstrate that a CG system’s operational uncertainty can complicate the effect of corporate leadership on performance whereas a pro-environmental citizenry can enhance such effect.

The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the influence of environmental, social and governance performance on the economic performance of the Standard & Poor's 500 companies. Structural equation modeling and linear regression have been utilized to measure the overall and individual influence of environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance on economic performance using longitudinal data comprising the years from 2010 to 2015. The overall ESG model had a significant relationship on economic performance. Furthermore, the findings of this study show that social and governance performance significantly affects economic performance in all regression models. However, environmental performance failed to show a significant relationship. Since Đi Mi in 1986, Vietnam has implemented a comprehensive economic renovation programme, including governance reform. As a result, the country has experienced impressive growth, mainly fuelled by rapid export expansion. This paper aims to examine the correlation between Vietnam's export efficiency and bilateral-specific governance performance indicator during the 1996-2014 period. The results show that Vietnam's export efficiency is positively correlated with the bilateral governance indicator and regional trade agreements, but negatively correlated with tariffs in the importing countries. The performance of Vietnam's export efficiency also displays an overall increasing trend, with some fluctuation before 2005 and gradual rise afterwards. The country achieved high efficiency in terms of exports to all major trading partners--with the exception of China. At the disaggregated level, export efficiency in electronic equipment is very low, suggesting that there remains large unrealized export potential in this product category. Overall, these results indicate that there is plenty of room for Vietnam's exports to grow in the future if the country can improve its efficiency in particular export products and/or markets. The spotlight of this study is to examine whether environmental, social, and governance performance affects the financial performance of microfinance institutions (MFIs). The topic has been of much interest to researchers and policymakers due to increased awareness among stakeholders on the adverse social and environmental impacts of business actions. Using a dataset covering 5 years for 62 MFIs across 34 countries, we find that environmental and governance performance has no impact on the financial performance of MFIs. As for the social–financial performance nexus, our results reveal a positive relationship using the depth of outreach as proxy of social performance. However, when women empowerment is used as a proxy for social performance, evidence suggest presence of negative relationship. The study contributes to the literature by providing new evidence on the relationship between environmental, social, and governance and financial performance from microfinance industry. Our results are robust to a variety of econometric specifications and have significant policy implications for donors, investors, MFIs, and regulators. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study investigates the impact of public participation on governance performance in a risk society. A trust-based participatory paradigm is proposed as a viable framework. Using data from a 2018 survey of family planning services in Hubei, China, this study develops hypotheses drawn from causal mechanisms of participatory governance. A structural equation modeling (SEM) approach is employed to disentangle the direct effect of public participation on governance performance from its indirect effect through trust. Moderated multiple regressions (MMR) are conducted to identify the moderating effect of risk perception. The results indicate that public participation is associated with higher perceived quality of family planning services and decreases son preference through the serial mediation effects of trust and perceived quality. Risk perception of gender imbalance magnifies the positive effect of civic autonomy on perceived quality. This paper extends previous research on the governance of gender imbalance and contributes to the literature on the relationship between public participation, trust, risk perception, and governance performance in authoritarian countries.

The need for greater diversity among organizational leaders and directors remains a challenge for organizations within the third sector, and beyond. This study examines diversity through a critical mass lens; that is, we examine an alternative approach to understanding the relationship between the ethno-racial composition of boards of directors and their perceived ability to engage stakeholders, improve organizational responsiveness, and effectively manage fiduciary responsibilities. Our study, drawing on a survey of 247 boards, clarifies the need for a critical mass approach to leadership diversity by highlighting the uneven impact of diversity on performance demonstrated by periods of accelerating and decelerating effect. We find that boards achieving a critical mass of ethno-racial diversity improved board performance among three governance activities—fiduciary performance, stakeholder engagement, and organizational responsiveness—with our critical mass approach illustrating the uneven impact of diversity on performance for each governance activity. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of high-performance work systems on the performance of government administration, which mediated by the strategic readiness of human capital and government innovation capabilities. This research conducted in Aceh province, which covers 23 regencies/cities. The sample size in this study was 320 government employees. The sampling technique based on the Stratified Random Sampling technique. The data obtained analyzed qualitatively by quantitative grooming with Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) methods. The results showed that there was a significant effect between the high-performance work system on the performance of governance and the strategic readiness of human capital. The study also found the role of strategic human capital readiness in mediating the effect of high-performance work systems on the performance of government administration partially. Public servants are important actors in the system of public goods delivery. Performance measuring governance in terms of the modern state is centres on establishing the contentment of the customers purchasing these goods. This means the public servants need special professional skills for this aim: a personal performance management based on professional growth and focused on the main mission of the government—social support in mind of fulfilling civil clients’ needs. We would like to identify the degree of personal support for this conception. The research was carried out in December 2014 in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), Russia. In regard to sampling procedure, we utilised a quota sampling with a representative age and gender distribution. We selected 303 participants, all of whom in the position of public servants of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). The research method adopted was a questionnaire; data processing was carried out using SPSS. The results of the research show that public servants are still guided by old skills and requirements. Moreover, they are dedicated to the classical and old-fashioned conception of rational bureaucracy, based on M. Weber’s principles, namely administrative efficiency, power hierarchy, formally established and clearly documented system of rules, and impersonal activity and emotional neutrality relations. Thus, most public servants consider their main goal as governance (28.2%). They describe their job as the performance of the state (42%), administration (17%) and execution of orders (17%). However, staff at the age of 30 years (35%) more frequently chooses the satisfaction of client needs and the delivery of public goods as the main goals of authorities. This gives us hope that, in the next five years, the professional skills of public servants will change in line with new requirements if the educational policy remains the same.

This paper discusses the performance of forest devolution, the major reform in forestry in developing countries over the last two decades. Although this change in forest governance has been studied by many scholars, the impacts of forest devolution and the various ways to measure them are still under discussion. This paper contributes to this discussion by evaluating the performance of a specific forest devolution policy, namely, forest land allocation (FLA) in Vietnam. The study is based on the policy arrangement approach to operationalize the concept of ‘governance performance,’ and particularly focuses on the local people’s involvement in the policy. Overall, our findings from three regions of Vietnam reveal a medium governance performance for FLA. The main explanation for this performance is the tradeoffs between the two key policy goals: forest rehabilitation and to increase local income. These tradeoffs are shaped by various factors, namely, the strategic use of forest rights by target groups, social learning by state and nonstate actors, and unanticipated effects on the ground.
